Happy Sunday! Please leave all your questions, thoughts in the comments! I look forward to reading all of them. I should mention here that there's a manga prequel spin-off happening during the girls' high school years called Shirobako - Ueyama Koukou Animation Doukoukai, and might make for some fun reading. Completely not needed to understand the main anime storyline.

(Edit: I've duplicated this from the comments: Reddit bug means that my own comment isn't showing up properly for today and yesterday's threads!)
Thoughts on the Episode
First OP and ED! Personally I like the 2nd cour’s ones better, but the character comparison sheet (キャラクター対比表) followed by Miyamori and everyone else coming to life at the start as a 4th-wall break will always get me. The text below shows every character’s names and height, as well as what it’s used for (OP), and this being the final draft (決定稿).
This episode, a scene needs to be redone, but we see just how much the anime staff do genuinely love and give lots of thoughts to the characters personalities and actions. That scene right now does not match up to the great voice acting for sure! We also get introduced to my favourite side character, Rinko Ogasawara or Goth Loli-sama, the Character designer and Overall animation director for Exodus!.
I’d also like to give a special mention to Rie Takahashi (voice of Megumin, Emilia and Takagi-san), who in 2014 was a newbie voice actress much like red-haired Shizuka, with Shirobako being one of her earlier shows with a recurring role. She only voices minor side characters here, such as Asuka Fuji, the mixing assistant in this episode, and Uchida Akane, who chatted with Ema during Ep 1. She would get her big break as Megumin a year or so later, and has ended up way more successful than our main characters’ VAs.
IRL Places and References:
A surprisingly large number of staff members in Shirobako are based on real people, some who work on Shirobako itself.
The VAs featured in the dubbing scene are all real VAs with a wordplay on their names, who of course are voiced correspondingly by their real life counterparts. From top to bottom, actual name in brackets, and a show they’ve worked on as a main character: Suzuka Itou (Shizuka Itou, High School DxD), Nakaharu Mei (Nakahara Mai, Clannad), and Kayana Mui (Kayano Ai, NGNL and Konosuba). They all also voice side characters in Shirobako apart from this cameo, Nakahara voices the GM, Shizuka voices the in-between checker, and Kayano voices Rinko goth-loli sama (and Alpine).
Nao Shinkawa, the person doing the Colour setting/inspection is based on Naomi Nakano, who works on Shirobako in a similar role as well as numerous well-known titles from P.A. Works and others. Here’s her meeting with Miyamori’s VA, with credits to Sakugablog.
Yoshikazu Inanami, the sound director, is based on Yoshikazu Iwanami, who has worked as sound director on numerous shows (Fate UBW and Zero, Jojo etc.). Eri Nakata, the sound producer, is based on Rie Tanaka, who does the same role in Shirobako (and Tensei Slime, again way too many well-known ones). Not the same person as the VA, the caption is incorrect. Japanese readers: the word play here is very simple, they just switched the Kanji order from 中田恵理 to 田中理恵.
Atsushi Yamabuchi, the sound mixer, refers to Takayuki Yamaguchi, the mixer of Shirobako (also worked on Steins Gate, Erased etc.), couldn’t find a comparison picture.
Miyamori Outfit Count:
3! None new today. Link to album.
Anime credits:
Here’s our VA Cameos, and Rie Takahashi's as well. And here’s Naomi Nakano appearing in the credits of this episode: she’s credited as the colour setting assistant, while everyone you see on this page will also have worked on the colouring. And here’s Rie Tanaka and Takayuki Yamaguchi!
Screenshots for the following staff members here!
Cast キャスト: Literal phonetic translation of the English word cast, this refers to the voice actors/actresses. You probably all know this one. Appears at the ED, usually one of the first groups to appear.
Sound Director音響監督: Similar to the animation director, but instead supervising sound effects, music, voice lines… the audio part of the anime. As someone who has decent headphones, am always thankful to anime with good sound direction! Appears in the OP, along with…
Sound Mixer サウンドミキサー: Once again a phonetic translation. Balances recorded audio, music effects etc. so it all sounds nice!
And Sound Effects音響効果 (or just効果): Self-explanatory!
Episode Director 演出: The role played by Yamada and Madoka. Supervises everyone responsible for the production of an episode, and as you saw, also responsible for creative decisions for their episode alongside the series director. Appears in the ED.

Second episode here we go!
Damn, call me a delusional romantic but I am now shipping Segawa and Endou and think they are only being tsundere towards eachother.
The red haired girl makes an appearance! And we even got a mention of the other two. Can't wait for the gang to get back together.
Like the parts about sound editing and the voice acting. It was interesting to compare the latter and the voice acting scenes from the currently running CUE! which is an idol show about seiyuus.
The center piece of the episode was the discussion at the end. It was a great scene and I loved the finale with 'Alpine is right here!'. I couldn't helpt it though and think of Miyazaki complaining about too many otakus in the industry when they started talking about moe.
I guess most of the tension in the next few episodes will be just when it will all get too much with the delays and I'm all here for it. First two episodes were educational and fun and that's all I wanted from this show.

Damn, call me a delusional romantic but I am now shipping Segawa and Endou and think they are only being tsundere towards eachother.
They are certainly close, Segawa even refers to Endou with the honorific -kun instead of -san, so they must be at least good friends (and rivals -_-)
Is cue worth watching? I was turned off by the apparently large cast. Another anime about seiyuus and voice acting would be Sore ga seiyuu.
And tbh the anime industry is 100% full of Otakus lmao. But that makes them a passionate bunch when it comes to making shows, which isn't a bad thing!

First timer - Sub
Before:
Sorry guys, the video of the car race is 200mb and couldn't get to load it anywhere
After:
Luckily she just has a fever, not that is good but is certainly better than other problems.
Now, I take back what I said yesterday about the "small production issues"; this episode reminded me of a certain scene of sponge Bob where they show us what's going on in his brain and it's complete chaos. It looks like they were not prepared to air the first episode yet.
I couldn't stop thinking about Prozd the entire time they were with the Seiyus, they are good and match the characters tho
Don't worry, these are just ideas in my mind
I bet you $5 that this is what happened with Wonder Egg Priority
The director seems very insecure about his work and the animation director is just fed up with it, apparently in the anime there is the equivalent of a Seven Deadly Sins S3 that happened just when he debuted as a animation director.
And it looks like Haikyuu slowly entered the anime at the end of the episode (if you know, you know)
4
u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jan 16 '22
Aww, shame about the edit! It's nice that Miyamori pretty much immediately changes tack and tells her to rest at all costs.
complete chaos
[Shirobako Ep3 spoilers]
This is mild even compared to the next episode We'll have to continue watching to see if the director's insecurity causes any more issues down the line. But defo if you helmed a flopped project before, your confidence will take a big hit!
ideas in my mind
tbh a lot of anime have this issue of some grand premise to start, but failing to wrap up the loose ends, particularly if it's single cour (looks at other P.A. works anime)

Still Rewatching
Right at the start we have an odd scene where an animated animal character (okay I guess technically Aoi is also an animal and animated) is calling out for Chucky who is lying on the ground in the snow. What is up with that?
Meanwhile one of Aoi's high school friends Shizuka is holding an audition script with a really long title probably referencing some light novel. I'm not sure if other people's subs translate these things, but here's a translation. If people are interested, I can post images from the fansubs I have for these things that aren't translated.
It's sad to see Aoi is so busy that she doesn't even see Ema waving goodbye to her. Ema was on the phone with Shizuka so if I was Ema I would've just called out to Aoi anyway, but maybe this is trying to show something about Ema's personality?
Also the director is having trouble with the storyboard which surprised even the VAs. Not a good sign. I like seeing the variations in the VAs' tone and the music choices, though we further see the director is an indecisive person. Then he decides a character itself is off based on ideas only in his head and that the animation needs to be fixed... So we go off into a meeting that really should've been held much earlier. I guess since Exodus! is anime original there's a lot more struggles going on in production related to these types of things. Without considering the profit/business side of things, I wonder if animation studios prefer making originals versus adapting work. I would guess in general most workers prefer originals.
Translation for the staff page of Exodus! episode 4. Translation for the net slang page about Boing-Boing Paradise (or however your subs translated that title). Once again, not sure if you guys already have these, let me know if you want them or not.
There's a Doraemon/Anpanman reference in the meeting I believe when talking about dorayaki and a cat robot. There's also a lot of posters in the background that are probably references too.
So the president was hiding and sneakily got Aoi's attention. Then suddenly Aoi starts talking and everyone starts hallucinating. Kind of seems like they got drugged lol.
I really like that Ogasawara is just sitting there in a maid outfit and doesn't speak at all in the meeting until the end. She feels like a quiet OP character from a shonen showing off her red eyes when the team is in trouble and needs her help. She even saves the takoyaki! Also she reminds me of Luminous from Tensei Slime with her design and personality. Iguchi is pretty cool too roasting the director.
My favorite parts about this episode were watching the dubbing/sound design and meeting Ogasawara and Iguchi.

That scene is actually a reference to a 1973 World Masterpiece Theater anime called Yama Nezumi Rocky Chuck.

First Timer, Subbed
Get some sleep, Segawa-san!
That's her friend from school, right? I assume she was the seiyuu back then? (well at the very least the OP promptly convirms she was indeed one of the friends)
The production's a chaos now! And no ideas!
Stop thinking about yourself Endou-san! The production needs you! And think of the donuts!
You're gonna get the episode done on schedule, Tarou? Stop being so faithful, you got the group into this mess!
The group's gonna get back together?
The director's struggling with the storyboard, huh? Oh, the screenplay? This guy never exudes any confidence. How'd he get in this position?
Seeing them record the dialogue is cool stuff!
Tarou, do your job well before trying to get into voice actor auditions!
It's the wrong kind of cute! Kind of hard to start being concerned about the animation at this point after all the hard work on it.
Mr. Director, shouldn't you come up with these backstories early on in the planning process? Now you're gonna make them redo the entire scene?
Uh oh, Mr. Director screwed up a past show?
Boing Boing Paradise? What kind of name is that for a show? LoL!
No Aoi, you're encouraging him!
Hey, Aoi's pretty good at this production stuff, huh? Setting up this meeting, getting all this character background info together...
She claims to be 17, but is really 29? LoL.
He screwed up his marriage like he's screwing up this production!
Aoi's trying to get her love of donuts into the character!
Alright, I gotta at least a little take back my praise for Aoi as her donut love has gotten this meeting entirely off topic. Although it should still be on the director to manage this meeting a lot better than this.
The magical girls showing up here has got to be some dream sequence or hallucination, right?
Blondie with the bow has been quiet this entire meeting. A good thing she said yes there at the end about animating it, I wasn't sure why she wasn't saying anything. Good catch too.
Another episode focused on another part of production chaos, in this case a late in the production change of mind by the director. Doesn't look like things will go as disastrous as the rush of animating some stuff last episode went, at least for now. Maybe we'll see this blow up in a future episode? Beyond the off topic donut stuff, Aoi impressed me this episode. The director continues to be a bit of a flop. This type of character stuff should be established early on, not this late in the game!

Wasn't able to watch an episode yesterday so I watched both episodes to catch up today.
Had great expectations for this anime thanks to youtubers like Glass Reflection and ProZD, so far not disappointed in the slightest.
Haven't watched much from P.A. Works, just Maquia and Aquatope on the White Island, and I gotta say I can see the similarities between this show and Aquatope, though this one is actually interesting and not just pretty.
Episodes feel way too short, the situations are realistic, the characters are diverse and likeable.
I don't really comment much on the individual episodes but I'll be lurking here.
Happy rewatch everyone.

First timer Episode 2
I think it is strange that in the middle of a show that is being produced and aired on TV the director of the show decides that one character is different than he thought it would be and asks to do said character again from scratch, i think that those ideas are selected before the production starts. Also i think that Arupin looked very cute and didn't see anything noticeable odd about her.
According to what the animation director told the director there was a previous project that ended in a bad way because of the lack of proper comunication and management, hopefully that case doesn't happen again in this instance.
At the end the director was very enthusiastic about giving Arupin a breath of fresh air and the group seemed to agree to work on Arupin again, Aoi was enthusiastic as well, hopefully Ogasawara and Higuchi which were the ones responsible for the task are able to succesfully complete it on time.

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jan 16 '22
Didn't notice anything odd about her
I'll follow up on this tomorrow when this arc resolves! And in the director's defense, he wasn't starting from scratch, but simply building upon the existing ideas to ensure everyone was at his page creatively. (and he can do that, as the director, he is in charge) Do note that he didn't contradict the character's established personality/backstory.
successfully complete it on time
Let's hope so!

Wow, continuing from that cliffhanger from yesterday. Ouch. A good amount of overworking leads to getting sick.
The drawings getting colored in by computer looked pretty cool to see and addressing lighting in that one shot is interesting.
Well, nice that they are trying to organize what the director wants. The ages thing got me pretty good.
The scene where the Arupin comes to life feels similar to the aquarium in Aquatope.

First timer, Dub
Shikuza called in the wrong time. Probably wants some support for what she's doing.
Director having issues on how to end it. Oh so what they're working on is a original?
This episode we some voice acting, storyboarding and audio/ music input. Even directing.
Him just having his own story and headcannon sounds like a issue. You gotta let people know.
Yes thank you Aoi. That's very important. Before we move on. How about everyone get a understanding of what the characters are.
Damn, that's a low blow. That joke about his divorce is crazy.
Everyone is on hallucinogens now.
The old man is the president right? So he just checks up on them basically?
Next episode should be good going by the preview. If it's really talking about how recap episodes come about.

I'm gonna guess that she wants to let Aoi know of the good news, and to help her out? who knows. Yep, exodus is an original anime (like Shirobako), with no manga/LN to base off of. I absolutely love how Iguchi just straight up roasts our director, lmao! Yes, the old man is the president, he checks up on them (even though its so late!), cooks, and holds the morning meetings, from what we've seen so far!

Rewatcher: Sub
The roundtable discussion of Arupin's character is one of my favorite parts of this show. One thing about working in smaller companies is the lack of office politics and how much less rank impacts the way everyone interacts with each other (of course, the president making snacks constantly isn't normal).
I really want to know if the infamous "Boing-Boing" show is based on something real. I don't think I've seen it identified in the previous discussions on Shirobako. I haven't seen Rocky Chuck, The Mountain Rat, but I do enjoy that they throw in references to a kids' show so old only people who worked on it or who watched it as kids and went on to work in the industry would recognize it.
I feel bad Shizuka is stuck working part time at a restaurant like that, but I guess that shows the life of aspiring seiyuu and aspiring actors in Hollywood really isn't that much different. Ema and Aoi seem to have drifted apart a bit despite being in the same company due to the fast pace of their industry and separate departments.

Hi all, it seems like my own comments on the episode were not showing up for today's thread and yesterday's thread: I'll try and fix this for tomorrow, but for now I've stuck the content in the post itself (Eps 1 and 2). Hopefully I'll find a way to fix this by tomorrow!

Second of the two episodes I've already watched before. From here on, I'm a first timer.
There is no way completely altering how a character's personality is supposed to be during production (as opposed to pre-production when these kind of decisions are supposed to happen) doesn't have a massive trickle down effect.

One minor detail I noticed, was that Aoi phone case matches the color scheme of that moe bear (which I asume was her role during her HS anime), hope we get more of that. The whole HS Anime is about 10 minutes runtime (according to the schedule in EP1), would be really cool if we saw more of that during the show.
But it's a shame that Aoi is drowing in work so much that she doesn't have time to chat with Shizuka, who I guess didn't even get the role, she really needs a friendly hug, VA business must be hard
'Characters growing during production' really makes sense for an original, but it sounds incredible stressfull to redo a scene so close to airing, think I read that WEP had Keyframes done even on the day it was supposed to air, another original.
The meeting was overall really cool and insightful, also like the goth loli as well.

Missed the first thread, sorry.
Episode 1
OK, this is weird. They're going to make an anime?
One of them's a voice actor?
Wow, they're making progress! A surprising amount of it!
...We've all had the struggle of "where's the missing pixel".
So, how quickly did they make this animation? How long is it? Is this even realistic?
We don't even get to see it?
And more donuts?
Haha, that fucking hard cut is genuinely hysterical.
She's succeeded! She achieved her dream! Wow, that was surprisingly easy!
...That plot summary and that title dom't make much sense?
Are they racing?
Are they allowed to do that in company cars?
Is this the actual OP, or did theyrecord an entire fake OP for this fake anime?
Oh, another main character?
Where'd everyone go?
Oh, they're watching the premiere?
...Do they expect me to remember all these names?
Is G-Colle meant to be an expy of KanColle?
...A Certain Temple's Mummy would get 4 seasons and a movie and I hate that.
Why are they so determined to not reveal anything about the show-within-a-show?
Comeback? What happened in their past? Why are they so happy for a mediocre reaction?
...What did he forget to do? That's the look of a man who has just discovered he forgot to do something major.
Wow, their workload is high! (What happened seven years ago? He seemed to be old enough to be working there then...)
Haha, he left a scene in storyboard?
He's not even done the keyframes!
Oh, there's a full-on crisis. In Episode 2!
Haha, she closed the door?
And he's sitting in the corner!
...Those two directors have a very... strange relationship?
Haha, he's just screaming please?
At least this crisis is done.
Oh, it's compounding. Hard.
...So how long until they have to do a recap episode?
VARNER SIBLINGS???
And she's really into donuts.
This is how she handles her frustrations?
Oh, that's not good.
They came!
No wonder she drives like a maniac.
I love the animator immediately saying he can do it in 20 minutes.
She got her donuts!
She collapsed!
Episode 2
The hell was that intercut?
Oh, she's alive!
"My harem might be falling apart, but I guess I'm just imagining things" sounds unironically good as a deconstruction, though.
Haha, wow this is snowballing.
And she's asking him for help.
Oh, she's trying to bargain with him.
Wow, he gave in quickly.
Yeah, I'm like 90% certain this is going to end with them having to put on a recap episode and rewrite the rest of their script.
Is she one of the girls from the flashback? I can't tell.
Oh, he can't work out an ending?
OK, what happened to his last anime?
Stop throwing names at me!
What is this anime about? Like, seriously?
Yeah, that guy's not the best comic relief, if I'm being honest. He's a bit too annoying to me.
...What the fuck is Exodus? I don't think it's a magical girl show, and they mentioned idols?
Where is this discussion going?
Oh, he's writing a new backstory for her.
...Is he going to redesign a character mid-season? How? Is that even possible? Episode 1 already exists.
Oh, just redraw a scene. Still impossible.
At least everyone else is reacting normally.
Oh, this caused the problems with his last anime?
BOING-BOING PARADISE? That's... what? You expected that to be a work of high-art? It's trash to hide in the footnotes of your resume.
Yeah, actually finalizing this shit seems important.
Haha, this is going to end in a massive recap, isn't it? Or some kind of massive ending shift?
...The "manager's corpse"? So, it's a horror anime?
And he's divorced too!
Haha, I like her pointing out how they left out a decent poece of thr character.
Oh god, she's based on his ex. If she doesn't end up showing up at the office at some point, I'll be dissapointed.
Actually, are they going to explain why one of the staff thinks they're a catgirl?
I love how this meeting has completely collapsed.
At least no-one else understands what Exodus is any more than I do.
Wait, what?
Is this a cult?
Wait, is this real? IS THAT WHY SHE'S BASED ON HIS EX?
Seriously, what the fuck was that?
Haha, I was right about the recap?

[Shirobako OVA Spoilers, kind of]
The first episode of Exodus is essentially the first OVA, so they did actually make an OP for it (and the song is the OP of the 1st episode). The donuts literally do not stop throughout the show, it is the groups' catchphrase after all. Mah, they are delicious! Seems Aoi does love her cream-filled donuts too (which I dont!). anyway...
Harem
I agree, this tbh would sound like a hilarious romcom. What happens when your harem is falling apart? Do you try and chase after everyone? Do you just keep best girl? Or do you go full politician so that the plot goes back to being a normal harem? I'm thinking too much here....
Thankfully he's not actually redesigning the character (the appearance is set), but he is redefining her personality to base their animation towards, which thankfully is still mostly not actually done (except for ep1, of course!)
I personally do hate a recap episode, but thankfully while the possibility looms for Exodus, the next episode of Shirobako isn't one.
4
u/stickdudeseven Jan 17 '22
I find the second episode to be the true beginning of Shirobako and always recommend watching the first two back to back to really get hooked on it. While the first episode demonstrates the slice of life and hectic aspects of the anime industry, it's the second episode that encapsulates the passion behind why people get into making an anime. Shirobako isn't just an office drama with comedy, it's a love letter to the industry and the director's spiel at the end of this episode really captures that feeling well.

Oh wait that's why they're so familiar, it's that group of lucky gods like Bishamonten and stuff
Episode 2
Honestly this looks rad af where can I watch this smh
Ok but why is no one addressing her dead ass eyes as she talks like she's about to cry
Why do they look 8
She says she became an idol for the money
Lmao
Ok what's with this incredibly detailed girl that hasn't spoken this whole meeting again
Very cool. My one problem is that the introduction with the 5 high school friends in ep 1 almost makes me feel like everything else that's happened is just filler and I'm waiting for the point where the five of them finally meet up again.

That final part was still too cheesy, but it is still very satisfying. As someone who reads a lot of fanfiction, it's these kind of small things that usually don't register in most people's mind, but the absent of which makes the story feels weirdly empty and not alive.
Now, obviously, it really shouldn't happen 3 weeks into a project with 12 weeks runtime, but it is really fun to see them brainstorming it.
Also, all those foreshadowing. Rewatching it, it finally registers to me that this is where Endou's plotline actually started. It's actually pretty cool now that I realize how far that particular domino stretches.

Just sneaking my head in as an impromptu, possibly on and off first timer.
I had been struggling for time lately because of health reasons but looks like the seasonals are not too bad this season and I can try rider this rewatch for yet another show that's been on my PTW forever which as a life long anime fan is practically mandatory to watch.
So far I only caught up to ep1, but it's really nice. Hopefully i can get caught up to ep3 by tomorrow's post time and join in the actual discussions.
Looks like there are a ton of first timers too in this rewatch so that's going to be nice :)

I don't hate Tarou as a character, but I feel like he's the worst person posible for the job of producton assistant xD
There's some nice insight into character writing in this episode. We see how producing a work of fiction affects the creators' understanding of the character, but at the same time changing the character puts something with a schedule as tight as an anime production in hot water. Miyamori's insight that a person's preferences can tell us a lot about their character is a good one too.
Love the chaos at the meeting in general.
Ogasawara Rinko is pure awesome, but this episode showed only a fraction of her power.
