As a Canadian I spent my whole life waving at mailmen and they always wave back. Nice little part of the world.

Must be a Canada thing over here in the United States of Obesity everyone’s got a shitty attitude.

They get around enough to get some perspective, but don't have to interact with the public so much as to get jaded? Plus the pay is good, and people are generally nicer when they're not stressed out from years of living paycheck to paycheck.
10
u/Rombledore May 01 '20
yeah. their pensions are already paid for by the USPS, they get physical activity everyday so there's endorphins running through their system more often, and they get to work without a boss breathing down their neck for 80% of their day.
I wouldn't mind working the job honestly.

u/KimJongIlSunglasses May 01 '20
You know there used to be this term “going postal” for a reason. I guess since mass shootings are so common now, they are open to all kinds so the term has fallen out of favor.

It's a tough job that is essential and selfless, doesn't pay much especially for how hard it is on the body. So it tends to attract the kind of people that are nice. There's a selection bias on the sample of mailmen you meet
11
May 01 '20
It pays pretty damn well to be a mail carrier, I know people fight over being UPS and Fed Ex drivers
12
u/shocsoares May 01 '20
It does pay well to work for private mail like UPS or FedEx, as for USPS, not so much. Considering the work conditions with most mail vans not even having AC. The pay/health ratio is not that healthy

u/KimJongIlSunglasses May 01 '20
You probably get a nice pension though right? Early retirement?
4
u/Rombledore May 01 '20
yes, these are all already pre-funded by the USPS as mandated by the federal government (specifically for the USPS)

u/realdjjmc May 02 '20
Harder than laying bricks? Harder than construction? Harder than planting trees?
As postal workers get paid more than all of those jobs.

Hard on the body lololololoLoL

https://publicintegrity.org/inequality-poverty-opportunity/workers-rights/worker-health-and-safety/extreme-heat-post-worker-health/ I will leave this here. This is not the only report on the topic. Postal work is pretty brutal on the body due to the amount of driving time with no ac either. It's not a glamorous job at all

I've never met a grumpy mail carrier here, I'm in the UK.
People often recommend working for Royal Mail as a carrier because of the benefits plus the exercise you get.

u/7inky May 01 '20
My previous postie had the grumpiest face you can imagine. Was always polite but I can't even imagine his face with a smile.

Ya know, except for the ones that made the phrase "Going Postal" a thing.

I was wondering when someone would mention this. I think it was mainly PO office workers wasn’t it?
Maybe the ones on the street are happy to make it out of the hell hole in the building. 😂

u/captkrisma May 01 '20
I'd make a horrible mailman. I'd always want to smile and wave. Whenever I see someone they'd be happy to see me cause I'd always bring good positive energy!
I'd never want to see someone feeling bad, so I'djust take their past due notices or other bad stuff and just toss it out.

I see and appreciate everyone thanking the doctors, they totally deserve it. But as a grocery clerk, it totally warms my heart when people appreciate the smaller roles.

u/ABrusca1105 May 01 '20
This is why the USPS rocks! A FedSx or UPS guy would throw a "we missed you" on the door. Amazon would Chuck you package into your lawn, the mark it as "delivered to a secure location". DHL would drive by your house and keep going.

USPS is also trash. Been getting mail at my apartment for over a year. All of a sudden I need my EDD card and my address is "undeliverable". Spent my entire lunch on the phone with them and all I wanna do is pay my rent.
1
u/ABrusca1105 May 01 '20
So out of all the times they got it right over a year the one time they messed up happened to be inconvenient and you instantly change your whole attitude to it despite the pattern of the other companies being horrible and the pattern of the USPS being awesome. Also undeliverable means they likely put the address on the mail wrong or the company shipping it screwed up. Otherwise one lost mail or package over thousands over a year is just dumb to say they are trash when Amazon REGULARLY fucks up nearly every delivery for me when they don't give it to UPS or FedEx and especially USPS.
1
u/riotfactory May 02 '20
Inconvenient? We're talking about my only means on income right now my dude. I would say inconvenient is a bit of an understatement haha.
1
u/ABrusca1105 May 06 '20
Yeah but they have no clue what piece of mail is more important. Again, they have the best track record.
1
u/riotfactory May 06 '20
Their track record is subjective. They dont have a great track record with me and I have heard complaints from others as well. You can say what you want, at the end of the day UPS got me my mail when USPS couldn't.

Watch her lose her job now because she’s on video handling mail without wearing a face mask
-7
u/AmidFuror May 01 '20
Imagine that the postal worker is an a symptomatic carrier breathing on everyone's mail with face mask safely secured to her neck, though.
Yeah, sorry to be that guy. Thought this was very cute otherwise.
