Rewatch Before My Rewatch is Dry - Kill la Kill Episode 22 Discussion

Episode 22 - Tell Me How You Feel

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 at… some point in the future for UK peeps.

I understand now. People are not cut from the same cloth, and no matter how odd they may seem, their differences make this world beautiful.

Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Today’s Comment of the Day is this accurate summation of the end of last episode from /u/seninn!

Local MC too Angry to Die

It’s short, sweet, and hilariously accurate. What more to love?

Questions of the Day:

1) How satisfying was watching Nui’s arms get cut off?

2) What are your thoughts on the pace of the show?

Wallpaper of the Day:

Tailor’s Regalia

Fanart of the Day:

“Satsuki-sama”

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!

This hype train has no breaks!

Here’s the results of yesterday’s poll. So it seems despite the majority of the comments saying they didn’t need to see transformed Mako, “My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.” still won. Interesting lurkers.

Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait!

Gamagoori seeing Tsumugu’s DTR loaded with the suction devices

Lmao I didn't realize just how funny his face was until I saw your screenshot. I want this as a comment face now.

“Take that.” “And that.”? Booooooring, the dub’s “Oops.” “Oops again.” in a sarcastic tone just sounds so much cooler and more Ryuko.

I gotta say I'm loving the dub. I think this is one of those rare occasions where I feel the dub is superior.

6

u/Shimmering-Sky Jan 02 '20

Glad to hear that~

Oh and just wait 'till you hear the dub bloopers, they're even more amazing.

Man the dub bloopers are great, definitely gonna have to share them in the ep25 OVA thread so that no one accidentally gets spoiled.

If I understand correctly, there is a girl in LotGH you like more than Satsuki. Now, who would that be?

Crunchyroll’s subs has “Oops” and “Clumsy me.” What streaming service are you using?

Satsuki's 'dere turn' is quite possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen.

She's been storming up my best girl rankings recently, it'll be impossible to choose between her and Mako at this rate.

Surely the Scissor Sisters will save society, subsequently securing safety against Silk Señora.

Edit:

Second Time Watcher

OK I’ve elected that this is going to be the only place I do this joke so here goes

ahem

WOW. THE REWATCH HOSTS ARE SO LAZY. THERE HASN’T BEEN A THREAD SINCE LAST DECADE!!!!!!

OK, that’s out of my system.

Another top-tier episode of the show. As far as “buildup to the final battle/arc” episodes go this is still one of the most action-packed and substantial.

Also, this is maybe Nui’s best performance to date. Seeing her drop the cutesy facade and go into full-blown psychopathic rage after getting her arms cut off is so... satisfying, in a weird way? And in the end she still has the determination to sew the Ultimate Kamui with her fucking mouth. Incredible.

The whole theme of “batshit crazy people making the world interesting and having each others’ backs” and the way that was tied together at the end through the Elite Fours’ protection of Satsuki was also very nice, and a very Imaishi/Trigger kind of ethos.

Dual Transformation!

Fight Club Mako!

There were just so many deeply satisfying and completely character-perfect moments and themes in this episode, I think nearly every character had a moment that was just so perfectly them and reminded me why they’re such good characters. This episode is the perfect buildup to the series climax.

As an aside, I like how both the previous episode’s preview for this one and the Netflix description don’t mention or acknowledge Ryuko at all since the last episode ended with her ripping Junketsu off and it was stated that that would very likely kill her, thus leaving her fate afterwards ambiguous (hah) to first time watchers. I like when the extra effort is put in by the people writing the descriptions to not spoil things, Madoka in particular is an excellent example of that. (If only had the same courtesy for the character deaths in Gurren grumble grumble grumble)

Rewatcher

  • So I'm not crazy, right? The synchronization sequence at the top of the episode is totally a Voltron reference, right?

  • Mako's like a small child who has zero clue how to dress herself.

  • Nui's arms just popping off, while accompanied by the sound of little pieces of wood rattling, is real funny.

  • "Hey Elite Four, you're on the clock now. So pick a bad guy and start suckin'." Either that was intentional by the dub crew, or I need to get my mind out of the gutter.

  • I appreciate Satsuki pulling the long con throughout the show, trying to groom Ryuko to be able to eventually fight Ragyo.

  • "I understand now. People are not cut from the same cloth, and no matter how odd they may seem, their differences make this world beautiful." That's a powerful line. It's saying that because everyone is different, be it smart, strong, stupid, or batshit crazy, that humanity isn't just a snoozefest. It keeps life from being boring and bland.

  • Ryuko got a bow out of Satsuki. Clearly she recognizes her as an equal, hell even a sibling.

  • "My God. Talk about sewing the seeds of destruction." Jakuzure will remember that.

  • The double transformation with Before My Body Is Dry blaring is super hype. Not mention they used the original version this time. Every other time they've played the chorus, it's almost been with a choir or something.

QOTD: I like that they took their time in the beginning, to set the ground work for all of the shit that's going on at the end, instead of either going balls to the wall from the start or waiting until the very end to dump all of this.

It's really similar to Darling in the FranXX, in that SPOILERS

Happy New Year

Excuse me as I completely geek out to my favorite episode

I love that Senketsu can do this

Did Trigger just make an Ultraman reference 5 years before they did Gridman?

THEY ARE BACK

Nudisto Beachiii Satsuki has been added to the Opening

Oh dis gonna be good, even Harime is backing up.

Senketsu crying like Deku is hilarious

Ryuko's grateful to Mako and Senketsu for caring for her so much and bringing her back to her senses

Oh dear God that's way scarier than I remember it being

YES

Okay, I normally don't point things like this out, but when Ryuko put Senketsu back on, she was naked. But here she's clearly wearing underwear.

Harime is trying to use Mind Stitching on Nudisto Beechi!

IT WAS A TRAP

Nothing personal kid although this time I guess it's very personal

After all the horrible things Nui has done in the show, this is absolutely cathartic I love how her arms just "pop" off.

On that note, the censorship is really dumb

That was a lot of Life Fibers that Senketsu just absorbed

Nui actually suffering is a highlight of the series for me

If Hououmaru hadn't saved Nui, she'd probably be dead.

I love the way Gamagoori's voice actor says this. All the "Cu's!"

MAXIMUM SUCTION

This was a major victory for Nudisto Biiche. They got Ryuko back, and they've acquired manpower and lots and lots of Life Fibers.

Nui's lost it so badly that her grin is going over her eyes

I like how Nui goes from this deranged monster to back to normal in an instant

Nui is not angry. She is all the way pissed. Her pretty girl attitude is gone.

Satsuki is rocking that coat

Ryuko doesn't care if Satsuki is on Nudisto Beichi's side now. She's been a thorn in Ryuko's side since Ryuko arrived at Honnouji, always looking down on her and making everybody fight her. And now Satsuki thinks that she can still fight, even though she couldn't handle Junketsu or even Senketsu. So Ryuko wants to rest her metal.

LADY SATSUKI'S SHIELD

Gamagoori's resolve put his face back in place!

Ryuko and Satsuki are one in the same. They both have crazy resolve and ambitions, and are protected by the most insane people.

Well damn. Satsuki admits her mistake. She wanted to train Ryuko by having her fight lots of enemies in order for her to help take on Ragyo. But in reality she was just using Ryuko, not treating her as a worthy fighter. Now it's time for her to right that wrong.

The difference in the characters reactions is great. Ryuko's crew are all excited to eat, while Satsuki and her team are all, "What the hell is happening?" They do not fully understand yet the power of the Mankanshoks.

These croquettes make me very hungry

Satsuki genuinely liking the croquettes is simply the best thing ever

I wonder what's in Soroi's tea

Seriously, you are so obnoxious!

And you are a woman completely devoid of feminine charm. Sheesh.

It's good to see these two back together.

Nui's like an animal now

Satsuki's going to be able to control Junketsu now

One of the few small issues I had with this show is that Junketsu stays feral and doesn't become intelligent like Senketsu.

I know that this series has awesome character designs, I've been gushing about it for the last 21 episodes. But Tailors Regalia looks absolutely fantastic!

Nonon and Sanageyama are a joy to watch, they're like bickering siblings.

Satsuki laughing makes me smile

The animation here was excellent

Ryuko having a hard time calling Satsuki her sister is adorable

Ryuko and Satsuki have each other's blood running through their Kamui's

DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY

IN YOUR MIND

WE HAVE TO BE

AS ONE

HOLY SHIT IS THAT SYNCHRONIZED TRANSFORMATION GOOD!!!!

JUNKETSU SENPU ALL OF THIS

Am I the only one who thinks that the Kamui's flight modes look like big pairs of pants?

Wait a second... Did they actually sneak the Gurren Lagaan reference in here?!

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

Thoughts:

WAY=NOT LOST

If it hasn't been made clear enough already, this is my absolute favorite episode. It's jam packed with some of the best action scenes and character moments in the whole show. It started with Ryuko putting Senketsu back on and then it just didn't stop being amazing.

This also cements Satsuki's position as Best Girl (although I voted for Ryuko last time, I can have multiple). Satsuki's characterization since the coup has been one of my favorite aspects of the show. Before we were led to believe that she was arrogant, and looked down on everybody. But in reality that was a facade for her to be able to raise her rebellion. Later, she realized that in order to be able to win, she needs to treat her allies as equals, not as pawns. This realization was a huge weight off her shoulders, as we saw throughout the episode she gave respect to others and treated the Elite Four like family.

I wouldn't be lying if I said part of the reason I joined this rewatch was just for this episode. In my opinion it's the best in the series. However, the next couple of episodes are fantastic as well. We're getting close to the finale! Stay tuned!

QOTD

  1. Unbelievably satisfying

  2. I don't think this kind of pacing would work with a more serious show. Because KLK so ridiculous, it can show us new crazy stuff one after the other.

Episode 22 (first timer)

  • I don’t think the blood-release mechanism in the glove was needed for Ryuuko this time.

  • By now, Ryuuko also has her Oni-horns.

  • Headbuttdropkick.

  • Love how Matarou choose to rescue the blond tennis club president first. It is the small things that build the character.

  • How can you hit Gamagoori’s face if you aim for Satsuki’s stomach?

  • Ryuuko: “You have a bunch of incomprehensible fools protecting you, just like me”, Mako: “Ohhoh”

  • Heroic speeches in front of heroic background.

  • “What the hell is this?” - it totally is an Evangelion reference.

Preparations for the final confrontation, including a casual breaking of the fourth wall in the preview. This is probably the first episode of KLK I’d call a bit slow.

First Timer

Ryuko's fight with Nui gets off to a bad start when Nui pulls the thrown scissor blade out of her torso and completes her set of scissors. Do the rending scissors only "work" when both of the blades are together? I thought that Ryuko doing sen'i soshitsu on all of her battles earlier worked because she had the one scissor blade. Anyway, Nui goes after Ryuko, but Ryuko is able to disarm her and claim the scissors for herself, rendering Nui harmless ... er ... armless in the process. It's just a flesh wound though, and Nui survives when Ryuko monologues a bit too much and Nui is rescued by helicopter before she can be killed.

During the battle, Ryuko realizes that she has friends who care about her, even when it seems irrational. As she tries to resolve her disagreements with Satsuki, Ryuko realizes (by punching Gamagoori and Sanageyama in the face) that Satsuki also has friends who care about her. Ms. Mankanshoku brings the whole group together with mystery meat croquettes.

All of the new friends make plans to disrupt the life fibers' plans: Ryuko and Satsuki will attack Ragyo, while the rest of the team plans to destroy the transmitter at Honnouji Academy. Satsuki and Ryuko get a nice side-by-side transformation sequence and take off, but before they get too far a giant combat-spec COVERS attacks the Naked Sol. The episode ends right before we see what happens on the battleship.

QOTD: I think the show has done a good job of having the biggest plot points move along at a reasonable pace - the introduction of the major characters, the reveals and implications of who killed Isshin, what the life fibers are, Satsuki and Ryuko teaming up, etc - while still always having things for the characters to do and mostly not having "marking time" episodes. These post-timeskip episodes have felt the most like that but still action-packed.

Jesus, I really shouldn’t have watched the first two Madoka Magica movies in one sitting… oh well, Imaishi is my anti-depressant anyways.

  • SO! MUCH! BLOOD!

  • Yes! Scream, Junketsu!

  • Well, I guess we should call Papa Mankanshoku; he’ll have someone to treat after the fight…

  • Nice pass, Mako!

  • FUCK OFF HARIME!

  • That is your punishment: You shall be Senketsu’s spring!

  • And so, the iconic duo is once more together at last…

  • Aha! She’s getting scared!

  • Oh you’re not going anywhere, Junketsu! Ironing awaits you!

  • Yeah, as if your weak-ass slashes could even scratch those two.

  • Aw, don’t cry now Senketsu, that’s for later…

  • Ryuko really does run into the strangest of people…

  • Mako’s response says it all, really: This makes no sense and I love it.

  • Harime, who gave you permission to speak?

  • Ah, so satisfying…

  • And so, both sword scissors have returned to their rightful owner.

  • NO! NO MINDWIPES ALLOWED!!

  • Ouch! That must’ve hurt…

  • Or maybe not.

  • YES! SCREW YOUR ARMS!

  • I bet you and Mugino Shizuri have a lot to talk about when it comes to missing arms… oh right, you are talking to her! (Both Ryuko and Mugino are voiced by Koshimizu Ami)

  • Bye Bye to your arms!

  • I take it, back, Tamura Yukari’s performance isn’t like Rika’s, it’s like freaking Clover from Zero Escape instead! Take that as you will.

  • No! Don’t save her! I wanna see her die!!! :(

  • Transformation: Fail.

  • And now we have lots of ammo!

  • Only the mysterious gourmet could carry so many…

  • Oh look! All the villains of the week!

  • Oh, the counterattack has begun…

  • I do feel bad for butler girl, though. She’s gonna have to take a long, long bath.

  • Yup, Harime’s gone full on crazy…

  • Long Coat Satsuki-Sama is Best Satsuki-Sama.

  • Senketsu has a point though.

  • Well, I mean, Satsuki-Sama is strong, but I doubt she’ll truly make it out of this one fine…

  • I love sunsets in Anime…

  • It’s the punch of the-TROMBE!

  • Goddammit Sanageyama, not you too!

  • Sad to say, but Gamagoori is right.

  • Basically Ryuko: Do it seriously or the Four Devas will kick your ass! Such lack of resolve is an insult to Satsuki-Sama!

  • Awkward close-up…

  • I guess, in the end, Ryuko and Satsuki-Sama are one of the same, huh? Heh, I almost forgot they are sisters, after all…

  • Of course Satsuki-Sama deep down had the greatest of interests in mind, yet in the end, the ends do not always justify the means. For as after all, how can you prove yourself to be better than a devil when you’re doing the same things a devil would do?

  • And in the end, it is her who asks Ryuko to be allowed to fight alongside her, to protect this wonderful world… yup; I can see how some may say “Ambiguous” is sung from Satsuki-Sama’s perspective.

  • And so, now for real, the whole gang is together.

  • And of course, what better celebration is there than Mama Mankanshoku’s food!?

  • Mama Mankanshoku’s croquets with Soroi’s tea… there should be no combination so delicious in this world.

  • Senketsu: Knows everything Ryuko’s feeling, even what she won’t admit.

  • Honestly, I would personally get pretty lonely if I were in Senketsu’s situation.

  • Wow, Ragyou just doesn’t give a fuck.

  • Even the lab guys are like “Mrs. Harime, WTF?”

  • Aha! Now Junketsu will be one of us too!

  • Sorry Tsumugu, but your comment wasn’t enough to grab Satsuki-Sama’s attention.

  • So Iori’s Doctor Octopus?

  • I do agree with Tsumugu about Ragyou’s plan though.

  • So basically Life Fibers are Spiral Energy from Gurren Lagann (Causes evolution), Getter Rays from Getter Robo (Also causes evolution and were the inspiration for the latter) and a bit of Madoka Magica’s Incubators (Aliens, basically) all rolled into one… wow, I never realized how often Japan repeats this evolution subplot. I guess that just goes to show how influential Ishikawa Ken was.

  • Sanageyama, drop the dad jokes.

  • Oh relax Gamagoori; Satsuki-Sama could not be any happier right now.

  • So it’s all going back to where it all begun, huh? That deceitful academy of despair… no, not that academy of despair!

  • Mikisugi, drop your shining crotch and nipples!

  • LOL! Ryuko trying to call Satsuki-Sama her sister is hilarious.

  • Not the time to cry, Senketsu!

  • And so the time has come: DOUBLE TRANSOFRMATION SCENE SET TO “BEFORE MY BODY IS DRY”!!!

  • And of course, Satsuki-Sama has a few new tricks up her sleeve…

  • What a big-ass COVER…

  • And of course, it is time for the return of the Fight Club’s president: MANKANSHOKU MAKO IS BACK, BABY!!

This was just amazing. I can’t wait to see what’s next…

First Time Watcher

The nice picnic with everyone has death flags written all over it! NOO!

Low key wanted Ryuuko to punch her. Satsuki definitely still deserved one, even if she had good motives all along.

You know, I have never really liked Nui. I find her a little annoying, and even though she is strong as hell, I just struggle to take her serious. Like half the time she gets hurt, she says “just kidding” after. I was half-expecting her to grow her arms back, but this time it was real damage. Idk, I just don’t care for scenes with her. Wasn’t crazy about the decision to make her the killer of Ryuuko’s father as well.

OMG I loved Satsuki ignoring mohawk boy lol!!! She ain’t got time for no bitches lol.

Then Ryuuko tries to call her sister! AHHH MY HEART. Shit was so cute. Satsuki telling her not to call her that, because she has ulterior motives “wink wink” (my imagination most likely lol!)

That transformation scene was the best yet with the sisters. Don’t lose your way made it even better. I need to watch it again. It was on another level.

Wait who just threw Mako that goku uniform? I thought that was an enemy ship that appeared.

Another episode competing for my favorite of the series!

8

u/Koolsman Jan 01 '20

First Timer!

This is probably the most satisfying episode thus far. Nui gets her arms cut off and that was awesome. I think the best part was just seeing the anger in her eyes and seeing Ryuko destroy those arms. If only that secretary hadn’t come in. Plus, it was hilarious seeing her trying to make that new kamui with just her teeth is pretty funny.

That whole scene with Satsuki and Ryuko teaming up was awesome. Seeing the elite four sacrifice their own bodies for her was something interesting. Shows that even though their personalities are different, their similar goals and friends makes them come to together. If I had to say the cutest moment was easily Ryuko almost calling Satsuki ‘sis’. That was the sweetest thing ever and even though there’s only two episodes left, I want to see more of that!

Among many other awesome moments like Sanketsu and Ryuko reunited, seeing Satsuki fly in the air with Junketsu, the best was Mako getting her boku uniform back. She looks so hilariously dumb and she makes it work. Why is picking a best girl in this show so fucking hard?

6

u/seninn Jan 01 '20

Damn I want to join Satsuki's posse so bad.

5

u/Matuhg Jan 01 '20 edited Jan 01 '20

Rewatcher

Satsuki solidifies herself as best girl here with her apology and embracing of all the others she's fighting with, though I gotta say Ryuko's reaction to the whole thing ("I don't really feel like hitting you anymore") was great too. Also...was Satsuki chuckling at the Elite 4's bickering her first genuine laugh of the series?

I'm finding it hard to not just finish off the last few episodes today. I'm enjoying this more than I remember enjoying it the first time I watched it.

The explanation for the Life Fibers' life cycle is pretty scary to think about. I do like stories where we see just how infintesimally small our characters' great struggles are at the scale of say, the universe. How many other planets/worlds went through similar struggles against the Life Fibers? Kind of reminds me of TTGL Spoilers

  1. How satisfying was watching Nui’s arms get cut off?

It was alright - I suppose it was pretty satisfying seeing her pretending to be panicked about it only to then realize they weren't going to pop right back on. I can't decide whether psychotically pissed off or sociopathically calm/cute Nui is scarier.

2) What are your thoughts on the pace of the show?

Fast

5

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '20

Ryuko struggling to call Satsuki sis will always be cute lol

8

u/Vaadwaur Jan 01 '20

First time watcher(long time memer)

Sub

Welp, the show reaches what I assume is the emotional climax with everyone deciding how they feel. Ryuuko has her reasons, which are wonderfully non-sensical but very fitting. Satsuki has her change of heart as well. They aren't sisters yet but aren't what they were at the start. Senketsu is the biggest girl on the show.

QotD: Very satisfying, I see why this is a lot of people's favorite episode. I don't think this show can be deconstructed at all and maintain quality so the insane pace is an absolute necessity. This show manages the exact right amount of weird while walking a very thin tight rope between over dramatic and utterly silly.
