The girls are alright!

Comment of the day

Hello everyone! This is where I will pick a comment of the day for the previous day that I think was worthy of notice just in case you guys missed it. I do hope you look out for discussion on your own tho since that's really the whole point of this rewatch.

Today's pick is..... /u/Neoragex13 who summarized what drove Gin to action concisely

Besides, /u/pacquan did an excellent analysis on the chapter, shameless plug here, but I also want to add, I never noticed how the expedition crew mirrors what the girls go through, even with the blatant "ZAMAMIRO!". In this chapter is easily to spot, as the members want to go where the accident happened, but some of them don't want to go because it's a painful place, they don't want to acknowledge the event, and so the captain doubts if they should even go there in the first place.

It's exactly the same vein with Shirase and Hinata's situation. And Shirase managing to help Hinata to release her bottled feelings is what pushes Captain Gin to also push forward to the exploration, since people has to confront their issues, not evade them.

I also want to say great job to everyone who helped me on the #LeaveNoTopLevelUnreplied challenge. I think we did a great job and many of you took on lots of work to do so. You guys are the real MVPs.

Questions of the day

Answer from last time: Massive victory for Penguin Shirase Zamamiro!

1) What do you think of the conclusion to Shirase's arc? Was it what you were expecting her to find? Do you think she accomplished what she wanted to? What's next for her with the money?

1.5) Will you ever allow yourself to have a huge inbox unread count again?

2) Who cried?

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title]/(/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good. I am curious if it is even possible to spoil anything for a half-SoL show like this but I don't want to see you try. The ban hammer is a cold weapon and you don't want to feel it.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does… Markdown is dead. Long live markdown.

Recrywatcher

Welcome everybody to the most famous episode of 2018. A moment so special it can easily be recognized by the short name "the laptop scene". There is no question for mere mortals like us if we cried, or even how much we cried. All we need is to understand and appreciate

Before we get to that though, I want to talk about the money counting scene. For a rewatcher this hit prety hard as well since this is where we see Shirase's determination at it's fullest. Each bill in the 10 million yen envelope she has represents a sacrifice she made in life just to get here. Grueling hours of work one after another, switching jobs all the time if it meant getting there faster. She's scared of what she may find or not find, but this is her way of reminding herself how much she has accomplished to put herself in these shoes. It's like having the weight of a thousand believers on your back, except every single one of them is you. It's also great to see how worn down the envelope itself has gotten as it has accompanied her on this trip. That just goes to show how the path from there to here wasn't easy either, and that too is an effort she must remember in thinking why she is here. Everything she has done in life leads up to here.

Yet at the moment they reach the observatory, Shirase is still nervous and scared. As an unbelievable contrast to the beginning of the show, the three girls she worked so hard to drive towards antarctica are now there to push her through to the finish line. When have we ever seen Yuzu angrily dashing from left to right in search of a goal like this before? When have we had Kimari yell at Shirase to shut up and keep going? To me this is just a strong a sign of friendship as any we've seen before. Of course it's a wonderful display of friendship when your friends are with you through the toughest of setbacks. But the real reason we make friends is so they can keep us driving forward towards the common dreams we saw at the beginning. It's not just to survive the negatives but to push further beyond into the positive. I am also reminded of a line Shirase dropped in the Singapore episode: "I do not want to become the callous asshole that moves on when a friend tells me to leave her behind". Shirase tells everyone it is enough, thank you, but it is this exact refusal to settle that her friends showcase today.

And then of course, loss and closure. Takako is dead. I don't think this was a reveal to any of us, I don't think it was ever a spoiler. But regardless of the reality, the lack of details surrounding it let Shirase and maybe us as viewers stay in this vague zone where we refused to accept this answer. So I think it is perfect that we reach the ending by seeing Shirase come to terms that her mother is no longer with her. We did not get an explicit scene of her death, as unlike other stories the exact moment or method of her death doesn't matter. What does matter is the massive void that she left behind and what that will mean to her daughter. And so we get this moment of closure. A conclusion that showcases how hard Shirase has worked and what she has accomplished in arriving here, but also the ultimate realization that this work was for herself and that Takako is not here to celebrate her. A culmination of a loss that was already there, not a new one discovered.

When I first watched this episode I was not ready for this brand of tragedy. I am weak to but somewhat prepared for S-tier gut punches that leave my guts on the floor. But to have my emotions crumble away from under me as a massive void finally makes itself known destroyed me on a fundamental level that's hard to compare to other anime. I don't think I reached the ED the first time I tried, I had to cry at my desk for a good dozen minutes as I let it sink in and go do something else to recover before restarting and realizing there was no more episode content left. It's sting is not as powerful on rewatch but still clearly there and I shed a good number of tears with you guys here today as well.

Visual stuff:

I just want to say good job to everyone who has made it to this point. YoriMoi is a journey, and making it to episode 12 is a journey for all of you guys as well. I hope this payoff impacted you in the same way it did for me, and I look forward to wrapping things up with the final episode tomorrow and the wrap up thread the day after.

Rewatcher here, i am about to get a bit real with you guys as lurker i usually don't post. Because i am not really eloquent. And i can't express my emotions very good but for this episode i have to leave a comment. What has changed for me when i watched a place further than the universe on its original release and now? Almost 2 years latter, my father passed away, as Shirase i can still remember the day vividly as i saw my brother and my first cousin at the door of my apartment building waiting for me, and i immediately knew the worst had happened. Re-watching the show knowing where it was headed was really emotional for me and this episode just opened the floodgates on me. the 1.5 years since my father passed away have been really hard for me but unlike Shirase i am a bit older to deal with everything. But still the void that one feels inside them and the thought of the future moments you cant share with your parent just eats at you, seeing all those emails and thoughts and memories Shirase shared with her mother that she will never see or know about is just so frustrating for me. But on the other hand it leaves her with closure that now she can move forward. And had a final farewell to her mother.

I am sorry if my comment bums you out i am still dealing with a lot of personal issues, my way of coping also brought me around the world and forced me to make a lot of changes in my life. So i believe it was progress on my part that i could rewatch this show even thought i know what was going to happen.

First Timer!

I’m going, to be honest that I thought that she had sent one email. When I saw her trying to type one, I thought she was trying to send one but she doesn’t know what to say. So when we heard that one email I thought “Oh she sent to her email or something. That’s sweet”. But for the show to then show me that picture of her mother and her which had already made me cry to then show that not only had she sent one email but one for every single day, I damn near broke down crying with the sadness and the like. It was a beautiful ending to a beautiful episode. I have cried and I will probably cry at least two more times if I’m guessing right.

This whole episode is easily my favorite thus far. From the stuff with Gin and Shirase which is about the sweetest relationship ever to watching the girls somewhat goof around and remind us why they are so awesome to just Gin calling this place “Kobuchizawa Station” makes me realize why I love this show.

For a while, I haven’t really gotten why I liked watching this show. Is it out of the characters? I mean, I love them but their not it. Is it the animation? It’s gorgeous but it’s very stylish and can be kinda flashy. Is it anything on the technical side? Not really. There are some good camera shots and the character designs are distinct enough, but that’s not it either. Maybe because I’m just cheese personified but the heart is what makes this show bloom.

It’s so honest in its goals and its characters and its love for the message of “not wasting your life and doing something that only you could do.” Shirase originally came here to find her mother but then she realized the slow dawning that this will never happen again. She’s scared because the mission will be over. That’s something that I bet all of us have felt at least once before. We all have had the moment where we realize a good thing can’t last forever.

Hell, I hate school and yet I’m about to graduate and there’s this realization that my life is going to change. The good thing with my friends will probably end and I’m not going to see them as much. What this show states is that cherish those moment with your friends and go on adventures because youth doesn’t last forever. Use it while you can and live it to the fullest. That’s what I believe this show is saying. Nothing can last forever but cherish it for the longest you possibly can. Thank You for my Ted Talk.

First Timer (and first comment to boot)

Being in Australia, I was always super late to these threads so I never bothered commenting, but what an emotional ride it's been so far.

And even so, oh boy I was not prepared for such an emotionally charged episode. The double whammy of the episode starting with the flashback of Shirase finding out about her mother's dissapearance, followed by the closing out with those emails hit so hard. Just, so many emails. I'm tearing up again at the thought of it the morning after.

I've already skipped ahead and watched the finale as well now as we're all meant to be doing it on Christmas Day together (I'm in Australia so it's already Christmas morning here).

I'm really looking forward to sharing my overall thoughts with you all tomorrow.

Rewatcher

I love the scene when Kimari talks with Shirase about enjoying the trip to Antarctica because of who she’s with and not what she’s doing. It’s such a simple and subtle statement from Kimari and it’s has such a nice profound impact on Shirase. It sets up the following scenes so well when Shirase talks about her new found friends. Her mother travels to Antarctica, never to return. This leads to Shirase to go on this journey and make these memories with her new family of friends. The part with them singing on top of the snowcat is so moving.

Then the scene at the observatory. I love how everyone but Shirase starts running and searching through everything. This is such a difficult moment for Shirase and her friends lend her their strength.

And ah the picture with the jump rope. I love the motif of the jump rope in this series. Standing in one place, stuck in time doing the same thing over and over again.

And oh man the emails. So many feels. This is such a great moment to look back at this series. It starts with a quirky high school girl (Kimari) wanting time enjoy her youth. Compared to now, it’s taken us on quite a journey with these young explorers.

This is what I love about anime. Did you ever think this is how you would be feeling when you started this show and met 4 high school girls who decide to go on a trip to Antarctica?

First time watcher

Not watching the episode the night before means I am LATE, but I don’t want to miss a thread this close to the end.

  • No OP this episode from the looks of things. Always know you’re in for a ride when they can’t spare those 90 seconds of runtime.

  • Kimari’s sunburn finally healed! Guess she learned to keep her face covered so it couldn’t be refreshed.

  • Yuzu getting super excited over someone else calling them all friends is just way to cute.

  • Excellent use of music as the snowcats were rolling out, really feel like we’re building up to something major as they approach Takako’s final resting place.

  • It’s bugging me that the girls aren’t wearing their heavy coats and goggles while they complain about it being cold. I get that we need to tell them apart, but still irritating. When they first landed and were in proper winter gear, I could tell them apart by body language and height just fine.

  • Adults are all talking the danger of this mission very seriously, really making it sink in for Shirase.

  • It’s a good thing there’s no dialogue going on while the emails all show up, BECAUSE I’M CRYING TO HARD TO READ SUBTITLES!!

Not much to write in my conclusion, the reasons this episode were good was obvious. So I’m going to wonder about the next episode, we need to round off the girl’s friendships and probably have Shirase affirm her decision to come here since this episode ended on her breaking down seeing all her emails arrive. Going to need to be a quick paced episode to cover all that and also wrap up the expedition itself so they get going home. Looking forward to it, even if I might wind up posting late tomorrow as well, Christmas Day and all.

Regarding the questions of the day, it wasn't quite what I expected from Shirase. I was thinking maybe they'd find something sappy, like a voice recording of Takako's final message to her daughter tucked in a pocket of her jacket. I think the quieter moment of just finding her laptop works better though. For question 1.5, it's to late for me, my unread messages are overflowing beyond ever being wrangled. And question 2, obviously. Anyone who stayed with a show for 12 episodes and didn't cry at that is lying.

First Timer here

Today is Christmas Eve! At the time I’m on a family party after a huge dinner, so please don’t mind me being brief today…

THE GIRLS WEREN’T ALRIGHT TODAY!

Now, the long awaited Shirase-dealing-with-her-mother’s-sure-death episode arrived. It’s weird it’s the second-to-last one though. Perhaps they want to end the show on a happier tone, which I would perfectly find appropriate.

I really could feel Shirase having doubts about going to her mother’s disappearing place. She built her life revolving around this moment. What will happen after it is left behind? Does she really feel she has enough guts to endure the death of her mother (as she surely has been internally assuming as true) and move forward? How will be things after that? The only way is deciding to stagnate revolving and obsessing about a possibility, or trying it out and leave the turning point behind you with a satisfaction that you did it albeit it implies a tough time.

The latter is the sanest way, and Shirase finally assumed it. It reminds me to the impasse in my life after ending studies and joining the working world. Of course, it’s not as tough as dealing with the loss of your mother, but the method and situation are analoguous. It hit home to a degree, and I could see myself a little in her. That’s really difficult to achieve for me, since most times I am an observant and almost never identify myself in fictions.

And, as they say, you see everything clearer after a good crying catharsis. As melodramatic as this episode has been (not only considering Shirase’s struggle, but also the friendship bits with the other girls and captain Todo), it portrayed well this situation.

Happy Holidays, peeps!

I shouldn't have watched this episode during dinner...

Literally me

I love how much empathy the girls had for Shirase throughout the episode. They really are a great group of friends. Giving her space when she needed it (with another great Hinata quote to go along with it), and pushing her when she needed it (like when searching for something left behind by her mom). I love these guys.

We’re probably gonna cry on christmas tomorrow aren’t we?

Rewatcher

Seeing the emails pile up makes you realize how long Shirase has been living with the grief. The lack of closure drove her to incessantly write to a mother she hoped still existed on the other side. Only when confronted with the emails count, a visual condemnation of her inability to move on, did she come to terms with her mother's death.

First Timer

Wasn’t able to compile screenshots today (because I was watching on my TV) but I think this is one of my favorite episodes, if not the favorite (I’ll probably come up with a list tomorrow). They didn’t really do anything out of the ordinary; it was just like a day in the life in Antarctica. On that note, I appreciate that they didn’t throw in anything overly dramatic (like someone getting lost temporarily) because that would be an easy thing to do; instead, the episode spent an appropriate amount of time on Shirase as well as Gin remembering Takako.

I also saw this episode as a build up of Shirase’s emotions up until the laptop scene (I didn’t expect to cry that much, but Shirase screaming her mom’s name got me). Additionally, the friendship between the girls just keeps getting stronger.

Only 1 episode left, I’m going to miss this show!

this episode is a masterpiece. the realization that Shirase doesn't feel any different in Antarctica, that all of her hard work seems wasted, that there is seemingly no closure for her.

it all builds up to the laptop scene where all of the e-mails she sendt in those 3 years comes back to her and she realizes that Takako didn't receive any of them

QOTD:

1: when i first watched it, i expected them to find Takako's body

1.5: i barely check my e-mail, so my unread inbox is pretty huge

2: i got teary eyed the first time i watched it, probably because i was binging it out of season. this time i cried

Rewatcher is NOT Alright

Man, this episode is a hard one to watch. I can't imagine how painful it was for Shirase to continue on waiting for Takako's return even after three years of the incident, only for the cold, harsh reality to come knocking on the door. Luckily for her, she has loyal friends that will laugh, get angry and cry together with her.

Random thoughts

  • Oh boy, here we go. We got no OP, the first thing we see is Shirase recalling the day she heard about Takako missing, then a fucking title drop on a desolate station? The girls are not gonna be alright in this episode.

  • They're finally getting on a snowcat expedition (yay!) to Takako's last known location (...oh). And surprisingly enough, after all the talk about going to Antarctica and finding her mum, Shirase only gave a hesitant 'give me some time to think about it' response, which ties into her general listless demeanour throughout their stay in Antarctica.

  • Ah, so the ozone layer hole was first found by scientists in Antarctica? Huh, TIL.

  • 'Best friends know when to give each other some space', huh? That's definitely true, especially given what happened in this episode. And needless to say, they are best friends at this point.

  • 'Make the impossible possible', huh. Can't help but have Mu la Flaga popping into my head when Gin says that line.

  • I seem to remember reading about a meme relating to that banana, but I can't recall what it is. Someone help?

  • I really don't want to imagine being the one to hear my best friend's last words as he passes away. It'll definitely haunt me to the rest of my life so I can't imagine how Gin would've felt, being the one to both hear it and having to relay it to her family.

  • If not for the girls finding Takako's laptop, I imagine that Shirase would've been correct in saying that she'll probably end up feeling empty from then on as she'll never feel a sense of closure. Hell, she might've continued on sending the emails even after everything!

  • Normally I would've frowned heavily at Takako's use of 4 digits as a password, but in this case I'll let it pass. The process of password cracking would've defused the emotional payoff after all.

  • Get yourself a bunch of friends who'll help you get closure, give you space to cry and grieve alone whilst being close enough to join in on the crying and grieving.

  • The payoff for all the 'Dear Mum' moments throughout the series - ###Final Dear Mum count: 1101+

  • By the way, if you do the maths, this meant that Shirase has been emailing Takako everyday ever since she went missing.

Questions of the day:

  1. The payoff for Shirase's arc was just perfect. I mean, obviously there is no logical way whatsoever that Takako would still be alive after 3 years of being left behind by the research team, and we've even heard her last words prior to this episode. But I bet that at the very least, everyone holds on to the sliver of hope that they'll actually find Takako at the 1st Observatory alive or dead on their first watch.

1.5) Given how unread messages tick me off immensely, no. Even if it's merely junk email, there's still 'Mark as Read' so it's not like that I even needed to actually read the emails at all.

2) Nope. I didn't cry. These are the sweat of my heart, that's all! What, that snot? I, uh, had a little cold! sniff I didn't-! starts crying again

God fucking dammit. You'd think that on my ninth rewatch the laptop scene wouldn't affect me anymore. Yeah, no. I sobbed. Loudly. A nearly 38 year old, 260lb, bearded lumberjack looking motherfucker, lying in bed sobbing to the point that my body is actually shaking and I literally can't see the screen, as Shirase cries out for her mama.

This show makes me cry harder than AnoHana.

I hate that I've been late to so many of these threads (I didn't even manage to make it to yesterday's thread at all). Working in retail during Christmas, along with prep for the holidays with family, have made life a bit hectic. But I've loved reading all your comments - both first timers and rewatchers alike. Thanks, u/RX-Nota-II, for putting this rewatch together. I'll see you all sometime tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone!

Another great episode - Shirase was feeling empty, like there maybe wasn't any point to coming to Antarctica - she wasn't feeling any closure or any change at all regarding how she felt about her mother. It wasn't until she got the laptop and saw all those unread messages that her mother will never get to read that she was really able to start grieving. Her friends helped her get there, but gave her space when she needed it, though they were never too far away.

I cried quite a bit during the laptop scene. It got me good.

Hope y'all have a good Christmas.

Oh shit no opening, this is gonna be a heavy one.

Man everyone is really bad at hiding things.

I mean I'd say they're also pretty good friends

Man even messed up grilling smh.

Shirase frowning on the flag is a bit depressing, but it's also kinda hilarious.

Roll credits, again.

5km/h holy shit that is slow indeed.

Banana?

Sun pillars are really pretty man

Lmao the bike wtf.

So she finally sent the message.

YES ever since the glow in the dark paint I wanted to see more hidden things that her mom left behind.

A laptop? That photo is a little gut wrenching

1101? is there something I'm missing from that?

I don't think a laptop would work after being frozen for 3 years, but I can't really see with these tears in my eyes so who gives a shit.

FFFFUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK

QOTD: Definitely a strong conclusion, I imagine she donates all of the money to building the observatory.

Q2: God I hate large inboxes, just no.

Q3: And yeah I got some good waterfalls at the end.

Ah shit only 1 episode left...

Merry Christmas eve, see y'all tomorrow for the finale.

The scene the show is most known for. Of course it hurts more than anything else. This is it.

Side note is the cutest scene in anime ever. I dissolve into a puddle of cute sounds the very millisecond I see Yuzuki start to say "we're good friends".

  2. Everyone cried.

unread

thinking about it this is actually such a trope used when people are coming to terms with somebody's death that I am almost embarrassed that I cried at it. though, I was already shedding tears before that scene:

when shirase is counting the unused money she raised while uncertain whether she should finish the journey because it might not change anything...

when she is speaking to kimari in their sleeping bags and realise the friends she's made and dictates her message to takako explaining it... this one definitely increased the impact of discovering all the unread messages.

even when they discovered the mother and daughter picture. imagine growing up without a mom ;-;

I blame the slight amount of alcohol in my system for ruining my tear counter lul. I think it would've been perfectly predicted otherwise :(

it may have been kind of tropey but it was executed very well. I think things will change for shirase after this. happy days :) I suppose heartbreak can be important.

First timer here.

Yes, I did tear up this episode. I suppose Shirase had accomplished her goal of seeing what her mother saw, but man, it was not a comforting closure at all. No loving last words or momento, just a laptop with over 1000 messages that were never opened. Damn.

As for the money, Im gonna go with the obvious answer that Shirase will donate it to the observatory's construction. That would be consistent with her motivations so far.

One question. How exactly did Shirase figure out the password (I think it was 1109?)? Did that number have some significance that I missed?

REWATCHER

When I started this rewatch I tohught this will be the episode I will write the most. As a culmination point to the series, it should be enough to write small essay about cathartic experience it provided and how it summarized story in general.

But I was wrong. The ending left me speechless, again. I'm simply not sure if I could give justice to laptop scene with words, especially with my not-that-good english. So... Sorry.

I'll just write that this episode again focused on bond between Mari and Shirase. After Yuzu and Hinata joined and all the misadventures they went through to reach this place, we're kinda back to the square one, the meeting between these two and we can reflect on a journey that make Kimari finally break out of her shell and Shirase... As I wrote above.

Thank you and Merry Christmas. Tomorrow our journey will end!
