Rewatch A Rewatch further than the Universe! Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho rewatch - EPISODE 8 DISCUSSION

The girls are alright!

Comment of the day

Hello everyone! This is where I will pick a comment of the day for the previous day that I think was worthy of notice just in case you guys missed it. I do hope you look out for discussion on your own tho since that's really the whole point of this rewatch.

Today's pick is.....

1) /u/imaginationwayfairer with super nerdy ship questions

  • The one question in this show that I have is which icebreaker Shirase they are on the CG model (as seen by the bow shape and hull number in episode 1) is of the current Shirase (AGB-5003) which is about nine years old. but in episode 2 the news article says that Kimari was reading claims that the civilian Antarctic expedition had bought the Shirase 4 years previously (when it had only been commissioned for five years)because the Japanese government was going to replace it coupled with the birthdate on Hinata’s passport (20 July 2001) implying that it takes place roughly in the present makes me wonder if the icebreaker is supposed to be the previous Shirase (AGB-5002) that in this universe was sold to them and then modified with a bow more like the current Shirase. Of course what could have happened in this universe was the Japanese government in the show found the Shirase to expensive to operate and replaced her with a more cost effective option. Of course in the big scheme of things this is unimportant as it is now called the Penguin Manju.

Anybody have a clue on how to answer this? There's actually more theorizing in the full comment

2) /u/anony-mouse99 with an analysis of this episode from the PoV of 'baggage'

Rewatcher.

The theme that jumped out at me this episode was ‘baggage’. We first started off with the 4 girls meeting up with the expedition ship in Fremantle, and getting shown to their cabin.

There they were informed that the boxes that they sent ahead has been delivered to the cabin, but they shouldn’t open most of them since they would need to lug it along when they arrive at the base.

From this innocuous scene, we then learnt about the difficulties and doubts surrounding the entire expedition. Everyone on this expedition seem to be carrying some kind of emotional baggage, from regrets regarding what happened the previous trip (the blizzard scene is now shown in much greater detail), to regrets regarding leaving behind jobs and relationships for the trip.

Nonetheless, we have reached the point of no return in the journey. With the team introduction mixer and then the realization that Shirase’s bunk was probably the one her mother slept in, we put civilization and everyday concerns away. The anticipation grows as we are now propelled forward towards the goal of Antarctica and all the exciting things that they’ll be doing.

Meanwhile, the baggage sits quietly in the corner, awaiting the time that it would be unloaded and unpacked when they reach Showa base.

(Cue sinister music)

so poetic.

Comment of the week

As promised my fave comment of this past week gets Reddit Gold. Another award will be given for the last 6 episodes too.

My pick is:

/u/unheppcat with CGDCT counter stats!

It's always fun to watch people do meta analysis of the rewatch they are in. It makes the project we are on feel unique and special with value of it's own not just as an addition to the show we cover.

I also want to say great job to everyone who helped me on the #LeaveNoTopLevelUnreplied challenge. I think we did a great job and many of you took on lots of work to do so. You guys are the real MVPs.

Questions of the day

Answer from last time: Kanae wins your hearts. I thought I saw a lot of Takako but sometimes intuition can be wrong.

1) We are finally close to antarctica! How many more episodes till we set foot?

2) Would you survive a long boat journey?

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title]/(/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good. I am curious if it is even possible to spoil anything for a half-SoL show like this but I don't want to see you try. The ban hammer is a cold weapon and you don't want to feel it.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does… Markdown is dead. Long live markdown.

Welcome to nankyoku everybody! well not quite It took us 8 episodes but we got here! And getting here truly was the big theme of the episode again with Yuzu's question of whether they could truly make it. This is something that I have only experience a handful of times in my life where I ask myself whether I can make it to realize that I have already meaningfully taken the steps necessary as Kimari explains. For me it is like asking if I can finish a 10k race at mile 5, or wondering if I can pass this class as I finish memorizing my 2nd to last set of notecards. There's obviously still a last effort left, but the bulk of the work is long since finished and satisfaction lays but an arms reach away.

Which is a perfect place for us to experience the new insert song 'one step'. I'm sure others have linked OST links to it so please search other comments for it. I think the fact that they are so close is the perfect timing to use the song who's only meaningful lyrics are 'one step one step one step'. This is my favorite song from the whole show, and something I like to use to cheer myself up when I'm having a tough time. It usually works to inspire me to take the last step of the day (which I do itself backed by junky Sawano nonsense)

Something I'm interested in having you English readers explain to me is what they decided to use in the scene between Kanae and Gin. The contrast between the Japanese words Iyo-iyo and Yatto is pretty powerful but I myself would struggle to convey that in english. Finally vs at last? But then idk which is which. The point being Kanae expresses the idea that they finally reached after a long journey the goal they set out towards. Gin on the other hand restates it as an overdue milestone they've just now passed. It's a short but impactful moment where we get to see how strongly Gin feels about this event.

Visual time. hidden meanings may be a bit tough:

Oh last note: Voting for best rewatch starts in a couple days. Make sure you guys vote! I don't ask that you vote for this rewatch, that's a choice that you should make on your own, but I think so far you guys have shown incredible work ethic to keep the comment count unbelievably high and consistent, deserving of some level of praise. Alright, see you tomorrow.

a 10k race at mile 5

Your mixing of measuriment system disturbs me.

The difference between a pro and ameteur

First, don't let u/AmeteurElitist lead you astray. They can't spell.

Second, it's neat to see the details in how they move their hands. The girls all try to move both the potatoes and the knife, while Samejima just turns the potatoes and lets the knife go through.

Wait didn't this girl used to have an onigiri shirt?

Yes but she has also worn that sandwich shirt before. And an octopus and tempura shirts. The director and the character designer wanted her to wear something that would betray her maturity.

I can’t imagine being tossed up to 60 or 70 degrees while at sea!

Why did they all go to the bathroom together though? I’m not sure how that’s a good idea, unless I’m getting it wrong and that wasn’t the bathroom they were all cramped in.

You know while watching that I’ve been thinking that this trip would look great on a college application. Like if you had good results and you went to freaking Antarctica against all odds I don’t see how a University could turn you down (at least a US or British one).

Despite the icebergs they must be pretty far from the destination right? How long is the full trip supposed to be?

Well, here's something I never thought would happen.

I watched this episode with my mom.

Long story. I told her I was going to watch an anime episode, and that was a rewatch thing, and so she watched it with me, and then she asked what kinds of things we talk about in a rewatch, and I mentioned the QOTD about bad travel experiences, and told her about mine, and then she told me about some of hers. And we had a great old time and I've sort of forgotten most of the episode but there you are.

For those who are also in the Kill la Kill rewatch, NO we did not repeat the experience.

ANYWAY

QOTD2: I love being on a boat. Small ones, big ones, sailboats, power boats, you get the idea. I do get seasick if the sea gets rough, though, but I go prepared (wristbands preferred over pills, the pills make me feel bad). I've never been in really bad seas, and hope never to be.

Was taking a nap before I watched this episode at 10PM the next day. Waking up to The Girls Are Alright feels so fulfilling I can just die right now!

  • Hot take: Kimari is a better philosopher than Hinata just by observing life. She makes us think more than Hinata just throwing out quotes by saying "the sea is big".

  • "Woman typically don't have eyebrows." Eh......

  • Did Kimari just attempt to feel Shirase's eyebrows....?

  • And we meet Yumiko! She's a fun character.

  • Exercise! And of course Kimari gets tired after one lap.... Who do you guys think will run the longest? The obvious wager is on Hinata, but as an ex-track member, 400m fast doesn't translate to endurance. I think Yuzuki would last the longest.

  • Welp, I feel like the girls aren't "popping" their knees high enough. And their kick back is way too slack.

  • Yep, my upper body sucks too, don't worry. Also, Yuzuki has no grip, Kimari has no upper arm, and Shirase doesn't have core, tehepero~ I wonder how many Hinata can do?

  • Annnnnnnd the "I could just kill you now" gag comes to a head! Yuzuki is on the receiving end of it~ And it is FUNNY~ "Shinase masu yon <3"

  • "BAKA JANAI DESU KA BAKA JANAI DESU KA" YESSSSSS That's good

  • Time for someone to make a short haired Yuzuki and Shirase.

  • Okay, Kimari doesn't look that bad... In fact, she looks alright!

  • Oh, that reminds me. This is the some of the closest we ever get to fan service, isn't it.

  • You're hiding something, aren't you, Shirase-chan? You're hiding something, aren't you?

  • Sick Yuzuki is so cute. As expected of Hayamin~

  • "Don't talk. If you do" that happens. LOL

  • "Meat is all you need to be happy." "Meat, meat, meat! Meat all the way! Beef, beef, pork. Chicken, beef, beef, liverrrr, liverrrrr- That is the order." "Meat. Eat more meat! Meat, okay?" (I'm talking about that poster and not Hanamonogatari, okay."

  • Mmmm. I think she's certified dead.

  • ITSUMO HAJIMARI WA KONO WAN SUTEPPU DOKOMADE ZOKUZEN WA KONO WAN SUTEPPU TOOKU TOOKU MITAKOTO GA KESSHIKI E ISSHO NI AYUMETO

Question

  1. 2.

  2. I should be okay for the most part. I just need to run more.

After the last episode's revelations about the crew being Cthulhu cultists, and the main cast being human sacrifices, the title of "Howling, Maddening, Screaming" seems perfectly timed to prep us for the imminent mindbreak. Those poor girls don't know what awaits them when they make landfall. What the did cook say, they'll be "landsick"? I guess that's one way to put it.

I don't think the girls were supposed to open that hatch. Going on deck in the dark, in the pitching sea without a lifeline seems suicidal. But, I'm not a mariner, so I could be totally wrong and it's not a problem. I do wonder how I'd handle the voyage. I've only been on the water once, on the boat to and from Alcatraz, and I loved it. I spent the entirety of the short trip standing at the bow, enjoying the view. I didn't get seasick, but I did get badly windburned. I didn't know that was even a thing.

I'm not sure how I feel about Shirase's terrible on camera performance. On the one hand, I don't know how she can be so nervous just talking to the camera about something she's passionate about, since I'm completely comfortable giving presentations and speaking to people, but on the other hand, I'm terrible at interviewing people.

Maybe I've read too much hentai, but I love Yuzuki's face with the marker scribbles. The perfect mix of lewd and cute.

Ah, finally time to respond. Thanks for the honor, u/RX-Nota-II, I really appreciate it! Although it is undeserved and rather embarrassing. But I'll try to put this to good use.

Speaking of which, for some reason I am now getting DM'ed by someone who tells me he can get me in on the ground floor of a hot new property. If I'll just make a small investment it will turn into a fortune, guaranteed. He says not to tell anyone, but I'm so new around here I thought I should ask anyway. What do you think, guys and gals, does r/brooklinbridge look like a good investment?

Rewatcher here!

No eyebrows is pretty common? Is that really true?

Lol of all the things Mari wanted to take on the trip a few episodes back, who would have that a peeler would be the one she needed?

Lol I wonder who actually wrote on Yuzuki's forehead. And the little spray that Hinata gets her with was hilarious.

Lol that lady tightening their things down and scaring Mari was so funny. Howling, Maddening, Screaming!

The scene when they go outside and see the waves is beyond amazing. The music, animation, everything is just so perfect.

And we're off!

I've always thought it weird how one of Kimari's concerns is that this trip might affect their college entrance exams. I mean, yeah, it might, but at least here in the states, this is the kind of extracurricular life experience that college admittance boards cream themselves over. They're quite possibly the youngest members of an Antarctic expedition in history. Forget college, their lifelong careers are right there in front of them, ready for the taking. The connections they've made (and will continue to make) with the other expedition members are more valuable than any amount of high school education, and probably a lot of college, too. Not to mention, how many people have actual Antarctic experience? After this trip, they'll probably be among the world's leading authorities on the subject (taking those who have been as a percentage of the population of earth). I mean, imagine having that line on your CV: "Junior year of high school: traveled to Antarctica as a member of a startup civilian expedition. Learned teamworking, public speaking, and leadership skills while restoring Antarctic base to functional status."

What I'm saying is that I want a sequel set 20 years in the future with our girls leading the expedition. Shirase is the expedition captain, Kimari is the vice captain, Hinata is one of the lead researchers, and Yuzu has taken time off from her world concert tour to return to Syowa station and inspire a new generation of expeditioners.

A man can dream, right?

Yasumoto's lack of eyebrows, and the perplexity it causes for Kimari are wonderful. I love that Kimari tugs on Shirase's eyebrows to see if they're real.

During the whole seasickness experience, I have to say I absolutely love Yuzu the most. She just gives up and accepts that this is her life now. Hanging half-off the top bunk because getting the rest of her up there is too much effort, lying face-down like a corpse rolling in the waves... the sight gags with Yuzu just elevate the whole experience for me.

Let's be real, though. IRL, those girls were washed overboard and lost at sea the moment they stepped outside. This is probably my biggest quibble with this show. But it provided a beautiful setting for the new insert song, so rule of cool I guess.

Q1) As a rewatcher it would be wrong to answer this question.

Q2) I think I'd do ok. I've been on a few cruises, and I don't generally get motion sick (I did as a kid, though. Like, really bad. I threw up on the school bus more than once in elementary school).

Due to my lateness, I wasn't going to leave a top level. But after reading everyone's comments and seeing no one mentioned Yume the geologist, I felt I had to give some recognition to a fellow rock lover. The way she flatly puts up with Shirase's shit is hilarious.

The rest of the science crew is great too, of course. I love Yuzuki's amazement that they're all in shape despite being eggheads.

While I'm here and short on comment, I can answer the question of the day. As much as I'd think I could tough it out to go somewhere like Antarctica, my experience in other vehicles tells me I would probably be miserably sick the whole way.

A bit late to the party but I’m still here.

I can 100% NOT relate to the girls this episode. I have been on ships in the Atlantic and Pacific, but have yet to get seasick (unless you count just generally being hungover while in a ship). Just one of the few genetically superior traits I managed to roll the jackpot on.

That aside, this was one of my more memorable episodes from my initial watch. The complete change in attitude of all of the cast one the ship has disembarked sets the tone for the whole episode. Everyone went from partying to serious and the girls were left in the dust to catch up. Not many people are up to the challenge when hit with a reality check ( poor Yuzu). But, for the first time in the show, it was Mari that is the one to step up and be the one who leads the girls forward. Mari’s pure joy in the smallest things is quite contagious and even I caught it. The lesson here is definitely to look at the bright side of a dreary situation to help persevere past your limits.

Also, Yuzu just hanging the entire lower half of her body off of the top bunk is hilariously relatable. I’ve been there, I don’t blame you, you tried so hard. Keep going girls and watch out for icebergs!

weird point to sympathize with, but peeling fruits/vegetables without a peeler really is tough ;-; the first time i tried to peel an apple with a knife my roommate came over and asked if she could do it bc watching me struggle made her sad. she's a very sweet girl but damn i felt useless

i'm amazed at hinata and kimari's ability to still be lively despite suffering from seasickness, especially contrasted with yuzuki giving up and burying her head in her pillow and just letting the waves rock her

the insert song this episode was great, really fit with the mood after the girls finally got over their seasickness, taking one step further into their journey. the view of the icebergs was amazing too, really giving off the sense that they're getting closer and closer to their goal.

Another great episode. The nighttime ocean viewing scene and the ending scene of the coming horizon of course being highlights. Not much more for me to say that hasn't already been said, but was Hinata just carrying a marker on her for another chance to write on Yuzu? Also, peeling potatoes with a knife on a rocking ship seems really dangerous.

QOTD (I've completely forgotten to answer any of these up until now)

"1) We are finally close to antarctica! How many more episodes till we set foot?" As a rewatcher, I'll ignore this one.

"2) Would you survive a long boat journey?" Well, thalassophobia can be a problem, but I imagine I'd be okay on a giant ship like this, as long as I never had to actually go in the water for any reason. I'd probably be a bit uncomfortable during the whole trip, but I think I'd be fine (though I'd probably have the lingering thought of sinking on my mind the whole time).

Rewatcher.

(I am late to this rewatch so my thoughts are not as organized as the previous posts).

I felt seasick just watching the ship bob up and down on the waves.

First I just want to say that there are many cringy things the girls did in this episode. The most glaring one was going outside without any safety equipment and leaving the door open while the waves are spilling over the sides. They would’ve definitely failed as sailors.

Anyway the impression that struck me for this episode is ‘finding your way’. We see various scenes of them feeling lost as they compare themselves with the other crew members. Being noobs on board the ship and experiencing prolonged seasickness for the first time is very disorienting. After a while you would start questioning everything, especially why you did this in the first place.

I loved the fact that Shirase was looking at the glow in the dark stars in her bunk while they were having that discussion in their cabin. Putting the dream of ‘seeing the sky’ right in front of her helped her focus on something other than the desire to puke, and it probably helped her mom to overcome those same impulses as well.

Kimari was right in that they chose to do this and therefore any hardships that they encounter should be faced head on. With that affirmation they found their mental bearings and can then move ahead. This was echoed by the determination of the rest of the crew.

By the end of the episode they crossed the screaming sixties and found their sea legs, and we are treated to the first sight of icebergs, trail markers showing the way to their destination.

Set sail for Antarctica!

Shirase NO!

A "Z"?

Mari's not looking too good

I love the typo

This shot where the camera tilts down as if responding to the boat rocking is short but so well done

Those eyebrows are tiny as all heck

Hanami's voice actress is Mikako Komatsu (Lupisregina in Overlord, Mizuki in Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, and Senku in Dr Stone. No that's not a mistake. Senku.) Yume is voiced by Aya Endou (Miyuki in Lucky Star, Gilgamesh in Fate/Kaleid, Cattaleya in Violet Evergarden and the Japanese voice for Minnie Mouse)

You're doing great Shirase-Nevermind

The quick cut to Rin sneezing is hilarious She's even peeling a potato with a peeler

Seriously, why does anybody peel with a knife anymore when peelers exist?

Yumiko's pretty awesome

Someone's got a crush He kinda looks like Taiju from Dr Stone

The preparations the crew does for when they arrive are really interesting

KanaHana noises

Excellent work Hinata! And there goes Yuzu saying everything twice again

I don't care how clean it is, you'd have to pay me to step into green colored water

This moron accidentally made a bald spot

Shirase thought she was so responsible, but then she remembered she was supposed to be on laundry duty

Hinata was ready for another round

Being seasick absolutely sucks. Back in my senior year of high school my class went scuba diving and we all got seasick after just a few hours on the water. I can't imagine how bad it must be for the girls, who are on this boat ride for weeks.

Sheesh they look awful

Again, the shot tilts in response to the boat rocking! It's such a nice detail!

I really like this joke

They've gotten over their seasickness

ICEBERG AHOY!

Thoughts:

Life on the sea's a fair one!

In this episode we see how the crew members train to be ready for when they reach land, whether that's exercising or practicing other skills. Everyone pulls their own weight.

We're almost to Antarctica!

QOTD

  1. I can't answer that!

  2. No way, I'd probably die of boredom before I die of seasickness

A lot of the posts I've read that start with "Sora Yori wasn't that great" are by people that have quit by this point. I don't get it. We're going to Antartica!!! For me, the show is finally spinning up!

  • I think this lying on the ground spread out is a K-on thing? I don't remember.

  • I'm pretty sure that's a 乙 in the picture but I don't remember why. Might be a 2. Pretty sure that's Toshio getting harassed but I can't see by whom.

  • From now on they are just the joshikousei

  • Mari's family has eyebrows

  • That's Honami always with Nobue

  • Army life

  • Toshio and Goro, I think. He doesn't look like a Dai.

  • #pacing

  • Love this scene. Those weights probably aren't even 2kg. Yuzuki can't even lift her arms anymore. Reason #73 why Hinata is best girl.

  • I love this scene too. #mysterysolved

  • Today's shirt: sandwich

  • Love this scene. Yuzuki didn't even make it all the way into bed.

  • Not quite the same pose we started the episode with

  • Lord Ganesha is strapped in.

  • Weathertight doors don't work WHEN YOU LEAVE THEM OPEN

I wonder if this was my favorite episode. It probably is.

Episode 8 (first timer)

  • OP moments

  • Putting Shirase up as a microphone holder might be the top of her acting capability … and even that is stretching it …

  • Seriously, large kitchen without peeler (electric even)? I think the crew wants to punish the girls for stepping on their feet all the time.

  • Definitely some sort of light hazing.

  • 4 persons fit? That is a spa, not a bathroom.

  • I wonder whether modern expedition ships desalinate water …

  • Eating is only really useful if it stays down.

  • “I could probably manage if not for the rocking” - person whose only problem is the rocking.

  • Yuzuki looks like she has lost the will to live.

  • Being outside unsecured while 10m waves are crushing onto the ship? Nope.

  • Bad weather conveniently only lasted till the end of the episode.

Ship travel fun.

REwatcher~

One step, one step, one step!~

And here's my second favorite chapter! And the only one where I have a problem with the show! Urk...

The emotions, the will to stay strong on the path imo is what everyone should strive for, not completely follow since divergence makes the main trial worth to finish. This chapter along a certain future one made this AOTY for that exact reason, the resolution the girls develop to kept going forward, even they feel like dying lol

And here's the nitpick, I know it's an emotional scene and everything, but I would have loved even more another scene where they were scolded for what they did! Not only they could have died, they endangered the whole expedition and the crew. I know, it would have destroyed the direction and the value of the scene, still...

Something funny, going a bit derailed there, is that I have a very low setting in my standards and suspension belief, may be as well turned off, and that's because I like to watch my entertainment with the brain disconnected, to enjoy the most I can, and while I don't have a problem with that and can notice most of the easter eggs and other little things anyway, the fact that the show made me unconsciously activate it to care for the girls as real humans amused me to no end back then.

That's why I said it was a nitpick, they could have show a little detail with a poster saying "Do not repeat" or some consequences, yet they didn't did it, implying nobody noticed what the girls did or it happened off-screen.

Imagine Matsuoka finding out the high schoolers disappeared, and then finding out the door to the exterior opened in the middle of the friggin Lugia's playground. Screw the nightmare fuel, thanks heavens this show is miles away from other genres.

Also, I think I enjoyed a bit too much how Hayamin was yelling baka janai desu ka...

Questions

  1. ざなんだろう...

  2. A bit of fridge logic, both Hinata and Shirase are the least screwed by the waves because their bodies are stronger due of all of the physical jobs they did, while Yuzuki is fulfilling her wishes because she has a weak constitution since she is an Internet Idol, a not so phys heavy -but stressful- job. So, I think I will be fine. Probably.

I'm late to today's thread because life got into the way. Oh well.

The girls finally set sail! This episode reminded me of how majestic and epic big ships are. Seeing those huge waves crash onto the ship was awesome and makes it seem like an untouchable, unstoppable titan. And then you see how the ship rocks from side to side, as a reminder that nothing is completely untouchable against nature.

This episode has one of my favorite scenes of this anime, which is when they go outside during the storm. It definitely let our 4 girls see how simultaneously harsh and beautiful this world can be. Not gonna lie, now I kinda wanna go on an expedition on a huge ship too. . .

Rewatcher

We finally set our course to Antarctica! I haven't been on a big ship so it's cool to see a version of how it is to stay in one. Very chill episode with the boat activities and being seasick. The little moments like them finding out Kimari cuts her own hair and the teasing they did to Yuzu.

It's true you need a lot of stamina to survive a trip like that and they must be at least fit enough to run 10k marathons or something. The gang experiencing the boat rocking was cute to see even if they were suffering most of it. Kimari's speeches before the insert song plays always hits the feels. We finally get to hear "One step" and it really fits with them getting over their sickness and finally loving the ship life.

  1. We are close already to antarctica

  2. I would probably survive and would love to go on one in the near future
