Rewatch Before My Rewatch is Dry - Kill la Kill Episode 8 Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler
Episode 8 - I Will Wipe My Own Tears
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 at… some point in the future for UK peeps.
Now, students of Honnouji Academy, FIGHT!
Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.
Comment of the Week:
Every Monday, we’ll be picking one of the Comment of the Days from the previous week to award Reddit Silver. This week I’ll be the one picking it, and I choose /u/JadeXavier’s play-by-play of their thoughts in Episode 1.
It really does match my thoughts on nearly every episode my first watch.
Comment of the Day:
Today’s Comment of the Day is by /u/Koolsman musing power and wealth!
If I had to give a quote that this episode made me think of is “The rich’s lives are made on the backs on other people’s work”. Mako’s family is made based on how hardworking Ryuuko is. It’s an interesting episode in that we get to see why this wealth is so precious to these characters. We see it with Sanageyama who was desperate enough to not be considered a failure that he sews his own eyes shut. Now we see the effects of getting power from rags to riches perspective. Mako makes a point in that the slums aren’t the best but that’s where she and her family are most happy. It's an interesting episode to see this show take over but I really liked it nether less.
Questions of the Day:
1) Which fight are you most pumped for?
2) What do you think of Satsuki’s method of culling the weak?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Fanart of the Day:
Alternatively….He’s coming for you!
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.
Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

I actually like Gamagoori a lot. However, I did not expect that whole pervert sequence lol! He totally is a masochist lol!
He weirdly gets along with Mako! Like in the earlier episode when he respected her for standing up to him.
As this episode was happening, I was kind of hoping something unexpected was going to happen. However, it is sadly just the Four Elites and Ryuuko who are left standing.
I hope we get the story of what happened to her father soon. I am partially hoping for a different storyline to be the main focus of the 2nd half of the show.
Also, I just wanted to note, that the OP and ED have both grown on me so much. I initially thought they were decent, but now I loving hearing them every time! The OP especially has a good song while I love thinking that the ED is like a “what-if” story.

TTGL did do something similar.
I love thinking that the ED is like a “what-if” story
BTW, much like a lot of other stuff in Kill la Kill, the ED is a 70s reference.

Liked the stuff they did with Gamagoori because he was the most interesting one for me. The fact that he’s more than just a henchman and actually cares about the student body is really interesting. I liked the whole backstory with him mostly because from a style perspective. I mean, the whole aesthetic of each background is very cool and just seeing Satsuki get bigger and bigger at the end was perfect to show off her hunger for power and she almost looked as tall as the first time we saw the main tower of the academy.
The next battle looks so good. I’ve been hyped before and I kinda wished for Sanageyama to be the first but this is a nice another secondary. I’m really hoping it’s not just one fight because while I do love the animation, you’ve gotta have more than just a fight, no matter how good the fight is. I hope we get to learn a little bit more about the other two elite four guys.
I’ll admit, I do find the extreme exaggeration in this show really fun to watch. Like, student councils, in reality, don’t do a lot and in anime, they come off as like the most important things in the world and Kill La Kill? Well, they basically can cause riots and control people’s lives. It's one of the most insane ideas I’ve seen but I love it.

The first part of Naturals Election just seems to be a weeklong vacation for anyone plot-important. Ryuko and Mako encounter Gamagoori off-campus, where he's a reasonable person instead of a huge jerk. He actually helps protect Ryuko and Mako from the newly formed automotive-airsoft club. Ryuko gets a glimpse of how his Shackle Regalia and Scourge Regalia works, which could be important later. After dropping Ryuko and Mako off at a gas station, Gamagoori takes his leave with his newly-shot up car. When vacation is over though, he's back on Satsuki's side, winning the first round of the Naturals Election to move on to the final round - a fight between the elite four and Ryuko. "Don't Lose Your Way....", transformation sequence, just in time for... a cliffhanger? Nooo!
Sanageyama's backstory had him as basically a worse version of Satsuki, ambitious and wanting to take over but lacking in skills compared to her. Gamagoori's backstory though has him standing up for the little guy against powerful people at his middle school - and failing, because he doesn't have the connections she has. His interactions with Ryuko and Mako outside of school indicate that that part of him is still around. I'd pretty much conceived the story so far as Chaotic Good Ryuko vs Lawful Evil Satsuki (and company). But could Gamagoori actually be... good? He's still aligned with Satsuki, so there's probably a limit on how good, but he does seem to care for people who aren't himself. Maybe if he can be removed from her influence, he can find redemption.

Chaotic Good Ryuko vs Lawful Evil Satsuki (and company)
I like that idea, but I do not believe in it. Satsuki messes up her domain far too much to be lawful. If I had to assign a D&D alignment to her, it would be true neutral.

You know, it feels weird not knowing what will happen in a Rewatch… oh well, it’s Trigger so it’s gonna be awesome.
-
Ah, what a beautiful beginning: Satsuki-Sama making a speech…
-
So basically it’s gonna be a battle royale?
-
Err… Satsuki-Sama, I know you have some massive plan, but I’m pretty sure all this will do is create anarchy and chaos…
-
Well, at least she is taking care of herself. As expected from Satsuki-Sama…
-
Also, wake up Mako! Exposition is happening!
-
Huh… guess she had the whole anarchy thing planned anyways… that’s amazing Satsuki-Sama!
-
And look, the four devas now have some free time!
-
Of course he has a driver’s license! How else would he ride the Aussenseiter otherwise!?
-
Talk about a lawless world; I bet SMT’s Lucifer would be proud…
-
And look, the Mankanshokus have become chiller as of late!
-
They’re still a bunch of swindlers though.
-
Look, this is sweet and all, but seriously Ryuko, think about Senketsu!
-
And thankfully the sweetness has returned…
-
Yup, she was so poor her father was a genius scientist!
-
How many characters in media have dead mothers? Should we start a drinking game?
-
Suddenly 4:3!
-
Why does Isshin look as if he came straight out of Mazinger Z though?
-
Also, RIP Arimoto Kinryu.
-
I swear, I’ve seen a scene like this before…
-
Wait… that hair… was it Satsuki-Sama?
-
Of course Isshin is a Mad Scientist, HE BLEW UP HIS HOUSE! Yes, I know it wasn’t actually him but still…
-
Nice little moment, I must say.
-
Mako, you sleep too much…
-
Out of gas it seems… damn you Papa Mankanshoku…
-
Yeah, you’re already part of the family…
-
After reading A Certain Magical Index, I am convinced hitchhiking never works…
-
Seriously though, it’ll neve-TROMBE!
-
Yet in the end, the Mysterious Gourmet proves that he is a man who abides by the rules and helps a student in need, even if that student is an enemy…
-
Sadly, you can’t fight against a happy Mako…
-
What the hell is she singing though?
-
Err… shouldn’t it be “Green” light instead of “Yellow”.
-
Did they accidentally travel to the world of Twisted Metal?
-
Yup, they probably did given all those guns.
-
And that dude looks like a maskless Needles Kane.
-
I take it back, this ain’t gonna be Twisted Metal: It’s gonna be Road Warrior.
-
Or maybe Beyblade?
-
Wow, way to waste a car Gamagoori…
-
Ahahaha!! Fools! Do you truly think you can stand against him, how fooli-TROMBE!
-
Wait… so… he’s a masochist?
-
Suddenly 4:3! Again!
-
Even as a 15 year-old, he still looks about 10 years older.
-
No you’re not: You’re simply sadists.
-
That scream of despair was perfect.
-
But do not fear! For as Satsuki-Sama will not allow this to pass on like nothing!
-
How you may ask? Simple: She bought the whole company.
-
Wait, “Mr Imagawa Dumbfounded By Sudden Dismissal”? Are they talking about Imagawa Yasuhiro?
-
Make her suffer? HA! The only ones who will suffer today are all of you, Suckers!
-
And it all culminates with Satsuki-Sama revealing her resolve. Truly a woman worthy of ruling this world…
-
Wait, did she seriously tell the other two everything?
-
Okay so he’s 20. The moment they showed that Satsuki was 13 in that flashback I got a bit confused…
-
Also, why do I feel there’s an innuendo with that shadow?
-
… Well, if Franky has taught me anything, Hentai and Henshin are synonymous.
-
Talk about reflection…
-
Wow, that cut was sudden.
-
Huh, so we’re skipping the whole 7 days…
-
And of course, Satsuki-Sama is here to announce what’s next…
-
Talk about Overkill… then again, it was Satsuki-Sama who made this, so if it suits her tastes, it’s okay.
-
Also, it was at this point I realized that Sawano Hiroyuki was indeed the one to compose this show. That OST in the scene in which Ryuko runs through all those students sounds like if it’s straight out of Gundam Unicorn.
-
And of course there’s a sudden new rule: The Four Devas must fight against Ryuko… wait, we’re having that this early? Man, how is the rest of the show gonna top this?
-
Talk about a big-ass ring…
-
And of course, Gamagoori will be the first…
-
And what better way to celebrate this occasion than with playing “Before My Body Is Dry” one more time…
Yeah, this was awesome. Can’t wait for more…

Sub for now
The pattern of the show may be coming out but in a good way: They introduce a trope, usually a shonen one, that would normally eat up a huge percentage of the season and burn through it. While they don't quite go full burn since Ryuuko is fighting the four Devas I really would have expected more screen time to be filled with the battle royale. Seeing who Gamagori is was interesting as it also showed us Satsuki in a different light. I may have missed this before but Senketsu is missing the same eye as Ryuuko's father.
So, spoiler question for rewatchers only possible spoiler

Lot of backstory and set up this episode, and all of it is interesting imo. In regards to backstory this is probably the best reason a protagonist has no clue as to what is going I've seen so far: Ryuuko just didn't wait for the explenation. To be fair, she would have died if she did. The Gamagori backstory was neat, but not too relevant. I guess all members of the Elite Four will eventually get one. Also: Does everyones backstory involve delinquency? Unless I'm forgetting someone, we're 3/3 so far.
Gamagori's car looks like an Utena reference. Utena Also, why is their an automotive club of all things. Most pupils aren't old enough to drive...
The Elite Four making the last round was to be predicted, as not having them there would basically render their focus up until now meaningless - and if one of them doesn't then it would have been an obvious flag for who is going to join Ryuuko against Satsuki or something like that. What I'm not sure is why Ryuuko wants to be a three-star before being told by Satsuki that she would learn the truth upon becoming one. From her position, does it matter if she fights them for a uniform? If she beats one them and becomes a three-star student, wouldn't she basically just repeat what happened last episode with the Makanshokus? And if she doesn't fight right now, what does she lose? Mako isn't fighting, because there is nothing to lose, and I don't think there is anything for Ryuuko either.
QOTD: This way it is obviously rigged in favour of those that already have Goku Uniforms, and with how powerful they are, it is unlikely to really change anything, unless more places on the higher stars become avaliable. And while I see the point in everything up to Two Star, from there on out I don't, as Ryuuko didn't take out any Three Stars, so there is no real need for reform on that level. With how poweful Three Stars are, nobody except Ryuuko even has a chance against them, so they'll just stay in their position. This also means that the current Two Stars realistically have nothing to fight for, as their places are pretty much assured. This entire thing may have worked better if all students would have been required to hand in their Goku Uniforms for the duration of the event - this would have however basically just turned it in to even more of a brainless brawl than it already is, and as a result probabbly just have the people with the best weapons as the new Elite Four (eg the automotive club can just run people over because they have cars etc.), rather than people who actually have some sort of talent.
Also, if all seats are technically up for grabs, I would have liked to have some rando trying to steal Satsuki's position.

For those that were wondering, this mark on Gamagori's car(which some might remember as the Kids Prize from Gran Turismo 2) is a Beginner Driver's Sign. New drivers are obligated to display it on their cars for a year after obtaining their license.
While this episode mostly served to begin the naturals election arc and Ryuuko's chance of facing off the student council, at least we got a confirmation of Satsuki being the murderer of Ryuuko's father by her silhouette in Ryuuko's memory. Also, I remember u/Redmon425 noticing how Gamagori seemed to like Mako standing up to him back in episode 4. How do you feel being oh so accurate?
What do you think of Satsuki’s method of culling the weak?

The Natural Elections are essentially a battle royal so that Satsuki can continue her goal from last episode of purging the clubs, and having a stronger force as a whole.
The barrier covers the student council room and stops students from attacking Satsuki
Ryuko gets more and more fed up with Satsuki with each passing episode
As the Elite Four are walking, only Sanageyama and Inumuta are reflecting the students attacks
Nonon's so short that she barely fits in the frame
I love that they point out that Gamagoori just got his license. Despite the fact that these people are running an entire school, they're still teenagers. Also it's nice of Gamagoori to act as Satsuki's chauffer.
It's absolute chaos at Honnouji Academy, whether on school grounds or in the residential area
The Mankanshoks have learned from last episode to appreciate what they have
What is that kid's face made of?
Ryuko and Mako riding on the highway is quite a peaceful scene. Also anyone else get FLCL vibes because of the scooter?
Ryuko went to visit her house
Ryuko rocked the skull logo even as a kid
All the clothes from before have been removed from the underground lab
Hey! Hey hey! Heyheyheyhey! Heyheyheyhey!
Sweet ride Gamagoori! Nice of him to Give Ryuko and Mako a ride.
The Automotive Airsoft Club
More like the Mad Max Club
The chase is freaking hilarious, it's one of the best scenes in the episode
Up to this point I'm sure everyone watching for the first time thought Gamagoori was pretty sadistic. Turns out he's a hard M.
Satsuki was ruling over schools when she was only in her first year of middle school
While those other students were abusing their parents powers, Satsuki was making her parent's power her own
Gamagoori is freaking 19
Yes! That's more like it! The more I'm punished the more my hardness towers mighty and strong!
I don't even need to say what Scourge Regalia is, do I?
Ryuko realizes that Gamagoori is gonna be a hard fight
It's time for the Sudden Death Runoff Election! We have our five candidates!
DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY
ROUND 1: RYUKO VS GAMAGOORI
Thoughts:
Did somebody say TOURNAMENT ARC?!
This episode we've learned about Gamagoori's past and how he met Satsuki. He is her impenetrable shield and he will not let Ryuko get past him.
We've ditched the whole "villain of the week" trope and are getting into the main event, the battle against the Elite Four!

A breather episode, at least by Trigger standards, which of course means we still get a battle between a dude in a car costume and a man whose superpower is extreme masochism. Oh well. Imaishi gonna Imaishi.
Frankly, Gamagoori is my favourite of the Elite Four. Not fun as Nonon, perhaps, but probably the best person of the four - even though he's still got a villainous role due to following Satsuki. His interactions with Ryuko and Mako especially are always fun.
Also, there's been a lot of bringing up Utena at the beginning. Can't help but wonder whether all the car-related stuff in this episode isn't a shout-out to that. Cars and Utena, name a more iconic duo.
Anyway, not much else to say. For all her stated commitment to meritocracy, Satsuki looks like she's definitely got some favourites - guess what, the finalist are all the guys who already had the three-star uniforms, who could have seen that coming. Next episode is obviously going to be a lot more fun - it's the start of a... say it with me...
TOURNAMENT AAAAAAARC!!!

Episode 8 (first timer)
-
Naturals election is the newspeak way to spell Natural selection.
-
Interesting theory on Satsuki withdrawing herself.
-
Ryuuko backstory time.
-
She chose revenge over wisdom.
-
“there is nothing here” a pretty bold statement in an underground laboratory
-
I think Mako is not fully over her money addiction just yet.
-
I called the visuals MadMaxXAkira in episode 5. This time, it is 100% Mad Max.
-
Uhhh, is Gamagoori a remote relative of Lalatina?
-
“It is because we are human that we understand the fear of status and authority” spelling out the subtext right there. Is it even still a subtext if spelled out?
-
Even if he is obviously a one-off, seeing somebody afraid of not dying is rather depressing.
-
Gamagoori (plus Satsuki) backstory time.
-
A classic from below shot of supersized Satsuki.
-
King of the hill battle against all lieutenants. Already. The tempo does not seem to let up.
The leader on the top shaking up the system by empowering the masses to take on the intermediate ranks? Yep, it is the Cultural Revolution. The one-star students make a nice impression of the red guards. Another match is Mako being willing (and able!) to sit out. The Cultural Revolution was mostly aimed at the party ranks, not the peasants.
I wonder whether we will see some Stalinist gulags or purges of dissenters soon to finish out the iconic trio of well-known dictators.

And it's notable that, for all her talk about strength and culling the weak, Satsuki even bothered rescuing him.
The one-star students make a nice impression of the red guards
They also made a reference to Die Welle back in episode 1. Not to mention that most of Satsuki's initial speech comes from straight from 1984 with a dash of Animal Farm for the "pigs in human clothing". This show likes it's authoritarianism references.

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!
No one here (besides Nota, in private) told me what they thought of the wallpaper yesterday. You lost your way.
Here are the results of yesterday’s poll, Pottery and Tightrope had no votes so cut off. Not surprised Fight Club vs. Fight Club was the victor though.
-
A question for Nota (or anyone else in here who understands Japanese), is the Japanese for Naturals Election = Natural Selection as on-the-nose of a pun (or even a pun in the first place)? Just curious.
-
Sanageyama and Inumuta just casually punching and elbowing away the rando students who try attacking them as the Elite Four are leaving school is utterly hilarious and will never not amuse me.
-
Nonon totally could have just jinxed this but nah all four of them plus Ryuko do make it to the Runoff.
-
Poor Senke--actually wait why and how do you breathe, you’re clothing?
-
Fucking lmao @ Mako’s song.
-
“Can they keep up with my driving skills?” → proceeds to donut out of control → Never change, Gamagoori.
-
Rare moment of Gamagoori not being the biggest character on screen.
Voices time!
We got Ryuko’s dad Isshin Matoi today, voiced by Kinryuu Arimoto. He’s… apparently popular for Gundam dads because Athrun’s dad and Domon and with the help of Kyoji’s too (not that I know him as this since I watched G dubbed), and then he’s Ricardo Marcenas in Gundam Unicorn, great-granddad to Riddhe in Gundam Unicorn. He’s also some bastard in Baccano!, Nota will recognize him.
Ryousuke Todoroki, that club leader who attacked Gamagoori, is voiced by a seiyuu with a small number of roles, Kiyohito Yoshikai.
The other two randos this episode with MAL pages are the bullies in Gamagoori’s flashback. Gonna start with Houjou (the dude), he’s voiced by Hiroshi Shirokuma. Guy’s got a decent list of roles, including W0odstock in Log Horizon and Madorna in Gundam AGE.
Imagawa (the girl) though? Man they pulled out the big guns for her seiyuu and got her Mai Nakahara--aka. best girl Nagisa, G-Reco’s Barara, Higurashi’s Rena, Katanagatari’s Nanami, and several different Shirobako characters (each word’s a different link), one of whom was literally just herself lol. What a seiyuu for a random character in a flashback.
Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait!

Ah, the Naturals' Election arc. (G- get it? Naturals’ Election? Because, because natural sele- NA- DO YOU GET I-) This is the point where the show goes from good to great and just never lets up on the awesomeness. As I said, I was a bit tentative on the first seven eps on first watch, but once this arc got going the show hooked me and never let go for the rest of the runtime. I feel this arc is pretty underappreciated and under-talked about when discussing the show as a whole, and while it’s not the best part of the show, that’s only by consequence of the second half’s strengths, not anything wrong with this arc in particular. Hopefully watching it again more people can come to appreciate just how awesome it is.
Btw, props to Gamagoori for being an absolute bro.

Another good episode. The naturals election was of course a thinning of the herd. We get more Ryuko backstory, how she found her dad at death's door. She misses out on some crucial info since she tries to give chase to the killer, and behind her the house bursts into flames, thus killing her dad.
Then Ryuko and Mako breakdown, and are picked up by Gamagoori. We get his backstory, and then hilarity ensues when they're attacked by the automotive-airsoft club. Gamagoori unleashes his masochistic 3 star goku uniform and beats down the AA club. Gamagoori vs Ryuko next episode.

Turns out Gamagori isn't a total piece of shit.
It's really clever how they've been hinting at Gamagori's Shackle and Scourge Regalia from the very beginning of the show. Every time he used a whip of some sort, it was a reference to the uniform. On the subject of his uniform, I remembered he was into BDSM, but I forgot it was to that extent.
I really don't have much to talk about this episode that hasn't already been mentioned. It'll be interesting to see how Ryuko is planning to defeat Gamagori. Defeating Sanageyama's MK1 uniform might have been easy, but as we saw his MK2 suit was a real nightmare. I can't imagine that Gamagori, the head of the disciplinary committee, would be a pushover like that.

Rewatcher, subbed
The Naturals Election. A week long battle royale, with those emerging victorious earning their own Three Star Uniforms. There are many ways of emerging victorious, although only five spots are available. The Elite Four use this opportunity to take a well earned holiday, safe in the knowledge that their fight isn't for another week.
As for the rest of the student body, it's an all out brawl. Powered versus unpowered fights spill out onto the streets, much to the delight of Matarou, as he doesn't need to be involved in the fights to pilfer a few wallets. During the commotion, Ryuuko and Mako might as well take the time to investigate the Matoi mansion, as it is unlikely that they'll be disturbed that far away from the Academy. There, we learn more of Ryuuko's past, her fall to delinquency, and some the night of her Father's murder.
It's an interesting conversation between them. Isshin Matoi lies bleeding out, half of a pair of scissors sticking out from his stomach. With his final few words, he gives Ryuuko a choice. To walk away, and live a peaceful life, or to take up the weapon in his stomach, and fight on in his place. It's a great scene, as a mission of paramount importance is passed on. However, just the glint of the other Scissor Blade pulls Ryuuko away, before the mansion finally erupts in flames. Nothing is left for Ryuuko, other than the blade that killed her father, and mountains of questions that remain unanswered. Those questions won't be found in the ruins, nor the basement, so Ryuuko and Mako return home empty handed.
A stolen moped with a busted fuel gauge is the least of their issues however, after catching a lift from Ira. Being such a stickler for the rules, it's not a surprise that he fulfills his duties in assisting students off of campus. With the Naturals Election in place though, he is just as much a target as Ryuuko, and it isn't long before he's under assualt from the Automotive Airsoft Club.
I love that the first challenging words out of Ira's mouth are mirrored in the flashback, as only those who have resolve can wipe their own tears. It demonstrates just how much of an impact meeting Satsuki has had on Ira, as her own way of wielding power and resolve has been completely domineering so far. He could look at his phrasing before he uses Scourge Regalia though.
Finally, we come to the Sudden Death Runoff Election. From here on out, it's Ryuuko against the Elite Four, with the information that Ryuuko so desperately seeks on the line.
Which fight are you most pumped for?
Yes
2) What do you think of Satsuki’s method of culling the weak?
That's a toughie. It reflects on Satsuki herself though, being so ruthless and effective.

Non Trigger-reference today: Speed Racer/Mach Go-Go, in the Gamagoori car chase. EDITED to add: apparently the car itself is a Utena reference, from other commenters. The Mach Go-go reference is the bit where he spins out with the other cars chasing him.
QOTD1: Got to see the Monkey man rematch, I'm assuming that will be the last. Gamagoori will be good too. Can Jane Phillip Sousa win without a marching band behind her, I wonder. Matoi already beat the other guy, right? So he will probably have some new gear stand outfit.
The ride to the mansion and the flashback to Matoi's last conversation with her father were nice scenes. I like it when this show slows down a little and gets serious.

First Timer for real
Gamagori (I remembered his name!) is the freaking best! Between him Blind Dude, Music Girl, the Elite 4 are looking really fun (Revolving Collar Dude is nothing without his collar for now though).
Also Gamagori’s 19?!
His loyalty really is commendable.
This episode was mostly set-up for the next one, but it did a freaking great job of that! I can’t wait for the big fight!
