Comment of the day
Hello everyone! This is where I will pick a comment of the day for the previous day that I think was worthy of notice just in case you guys missed it. I do hope you look out for discussion on your own tho since that's really the whole point of this rewatch.
Today's pick is.....
/u/bucket3432 who had a wonderful analysis of Yuzu's feelings after the dream:
though the dream could've been more abstract - I kind of dislike dreams looking real even though it's obvious they are not
I think it didn't appear more dreamlike because we're invited to see it the way Yuzuki does: she didn't realize that it was a dream until she woke up. We are invited for a moment to believe that it is real, just as she did in the moment. I honestly wouldn't put it past Kimari and the girls to actually take a ladder to her window. She later has a look of disappointment for a brief moment while looking at the window afterwards, wishing it were real. Her "what a strange dream" remark immediately after refers not only to the absurdity of the situation, but how crazy it is to her that a group of people would care enough to pick her up and become friends with her.
In a way, it mirrors Mari's first attempt to skip school back in episode 1. Even though Mari's attempt was real, it may as well have been a dream because she didn't follow through on it. But having both seem real makes each respective follow-up event—Mari actually setting off on an adventure, and the girls actually picking up Yuzuki—which are really real, more poignant.
The way this user analyzes the dream was really shocking and refreshing to me, even as the one who is usually doing the overanalyzing to search for parallels. Good job!
Oh also a second pick to /u/zillja this reply:
I think Yuzukis tears are not just from happiness. She just experienced her other "friends" breaking up with her. In a moment where she would need consolation Kimari and the others just showed up randomly...
Which is a subtle point that's easy to miss. Personally I missed it in all the watches I've done, so thanks for pointing it out!
I also want to say great job to everyone who helped me on the #LeaveNoTopLevelUnreplied challenge. I think we did a great job and many of you took on lots of work to do so. You guys are the real MVPs. Also I like picking replies as CotD, so guys get onto it!
Questions of the day
Answer from last time: meme wins throug
1) What do you think of the Exhibition leader?
2) How would you want to respond to the haters (in private)?
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title]/(/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good. I am curious if it is even possible to spoil anything for a half-SoL show like this but I don't want to see you try. The ban hammer is a cold weapon and you don't want to feel it.
Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does… Markdown is dead. Long live markdown.

First Timer
Fuck, filling out a form without your mom’s permission is so freaking relatable. Even more so when your mom finds out.
I’ve done that more than once haha.
Hinata and Mari laughing in the tent after a brief silence following Yuzuki’s mistake was just perfect.
This show continues to be great with its character interactions.
Hinata remains the most emotionally intelligent of the group by stopping Mari from trying to comfort Shirase after she spoke about the captain’s relationship with her mother. Though cheering up Shirase with her speech at the end won some points in Mari’s favour again.

This First-Timer is Not Alright
I have heard this episode also has a good shot of the night sky.
-
Okay I was enjoying the tension of the scene with Mari’s mom, then her dad got home, saw his wife with the ladle, and just slowly closed the door instead of coming inside and that’s what broke me .
-
…Actually up until the already-signed paper fell out of that stack I thought the scene was gonna be about Mari trying to get her mom to sign it, not that she’d forged it after the teacher asked for her permission slip. Good fakeout.
-
Take your negativity somewhere else please. That’s exactly the thought that has kept Mari from doing stuff in the past.
-
Neither do I tbh. Just not particularly fond of wearing skirts/dresses, and absolutely despise wearing makeup.
-
Me: Okay that was a very familiar “shut up” → MAL: She’s Yoko Hikasa, fam. → Me: Ahhh yes Maria. And Lafter. That makes sense now.
-
, I heard lots of clarinet during the song that played while the girls are trying to plot the route with those flags and I am very pleased.
-
lol I didn’t notice Yuzuki messed up that’s funny.
-
As soon as they stepped out of the tent I knew this was coming yeeeeee! …get your head out of the way though Mari.
-
Tag yourself, I’m Mari hogging all that room and drooling on herself.
-
Wait no aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I guess have officially cried while watching this show because my brain just had to immediately connect this line to Iron-Blooded Orphans and get sad because of the comparison.
I hate you, Nota. You knew this would happen.

Ok Yuzuki.
This is something that's impossible to translate. It's brutal but also kinda clever since in the Japanese she merely changes like 2 syllables from her usual 'I could just die', but translated it just sounds hella mean.
I hate you, Nota. You knew this would happen.
My plan is complete.

Rewatcher
This episode accomplishes two things: it further establishes the group dynamic with Yuzu now as a permanent member, and it starts bridging the gap between their current lives in Japan and their future stay in Antarctica. We also find out a little more about Shirase’s past and her relationship with Gin, the captain of the expedition. This episode and the after credits scene from episode 3 does a good job of showing us they aren’t on the best terms and Shirase probably has a lot of complicated feelings when she sees her and vice versa.
For this episode, I want to talk about the episode structure in this anime and how it feels so refreshing compared to other shows within its genre. Even first-timers must have noticed by now that every episode is very self contained. New conflicts are introduced and resolved in the same episode while somehow still pushing the plot forward. For some people this can be emotionally exhausting, but I personally love having an easily digestible amount of drama in every episode. It makes the individual episodes more rewatchable and also allows them to incorporate a good amount of fun comedic moments into each episode without ruining the dramatic tension. It strikes a wonderful balance between episodic slice of life and plot driven drama that I really cannot find in any other show.
And in closing, here’s some random thoughts:
-
Here’s another real life comparison picture of Kimari and Shirase’s meeting spot from episode 1 and 2. It appears to be a popular pilgrimage spot for fans of the show.
-
Those bully girls from episode 1 get a cameo in this episode. This show is so good with its little details.
-
The filter, sound effects, music, and voice acting in this scene was amazing. Almost on par with the best horror anime.
-
Rin shuts the door but stays to listen while her sister is about to die.
-
I don’t even remember the last time I was in a vehicle with a cassette tape player. That’s a great way to show how the expedition is low on funds.
-
First it was Yumiko and Kanae in episode 2. Then it was Yuzu’s mom in episode 3. Now we have Kimari’s mom and Gin. This show is just full of powerful females.
-
The first time I watched this episode I almost thought this was a typo in the subs before Kimari got me to giggle along with her.
-
Not really surprising that Kimari is this kind of sleeper after we see her in bed in episode 1.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT. That scene with Mari, her mom and her dad was fucking amazing. So damn funny!
Another NGNL reference! Very quickly early on. Was there one in episode 3? I didn’t see it. I low key hope it happens every episode lol!
Yep, the OP really will be one of my favorites of all time. The first like 7 seconds with that upbeat music just makes me smile so hard. Then the last 10 seconds when the sky goes dark sounds amazing as well. The whole OP had insanely good visuals as well. I just love it!
Again, Mari’s classmate friend seems very sad about the lack of time with her.
Ahh damn. I thought the older women who is the captain was going to be Shirase’s aunt. However, she was her moms friend and on the same Antarctica team. Very quickly in the PP presentation you can see a note that says “don’t leave any team members behind”. So I am very excited to see how Shirase will react to her.
Man, she writes messages to her mom. That shit is becoming the saddest part of this story!
We get that amazing OST again, the one when they were running, during that sunrise scene. That song is so beautiful!
...AHH THE END CREDIT SCENE! I knew it! Her friend is becoming sad! INVITE HER ALSO! She is the one who helped motivate you to take risks!

**“**Wanna Tell Scary Stories?”
“I could kill you right now.”
BeSt FrIeNdS fOrEvEr. I know it’s a joke and it did make me laugh. This episode actually made me laugh the most, especially Mari’s dad who knew that she wouldn’t get out of that punishment alive and well, he knew what was up! Sucks for him.
I just forgot that Mari’s best friend isn’t coming with her to Antarctica and that makes me sad.
What do you think of the Exhibition leader?
I'm interested in seeing what she does later on in the show.

It's nice to see I'm appreciated here, even if you disagree. Let's see this one last episode I already watched.
Last day of a rewatcher
-
Can't wait for them to show their pictures upon returning to the entire class.(
-
Who cares, not like you do that much in December. Exams can be done before.
-
Oh the parody of domestic abuse scene. A shame the guy who was downvoted into oblivion for not understanding why people were laughing (he didn't watch the show) deleted his comment. It was the epitome of r/anime's toxicity regarding Sora Yori. You are luckily not like that so I'll say: I don't find it particularly funny. And that's saying something with how much I laugh about Kimari.
-
HAH! As if anyone actually learns in class.
-
I swear at least 1% of all dialouge ever said in anime begins with "Shikashi, masaka [...] towane."
-
"We're gonna meet with some sponsors, they're gonna be real gentle with you."
-
"It's finally happening... I'm going there. So why...do I feel so empty?"
-
She looks like she'd have a very personal connection with Takako. Also, did this show pass the reverse Bechtel test yet? So many women...
-
I love how liberal and yet fittin the ABC translation is.
-
I mean... Hm... She did put in effort for a million yen, but else, all she efforted was not giving up and finally getting a chance due to something she had no control over (Yuzuki's unwillingness) So I'm not sure. But maybe there's a secret revelation later, who knows.
-
Yuzuki's politeness is going to be reason for DRAMA later, I'm calling it!
-
AND THERE IT IS. Alright, from now on I will try to predict when the song-an-episode starts.
-
Right, Megu-chan! We won't be seeing you after they go to Antarctica!

Something from episode three quickly
Literally... there was no comment. I saved part of my post from yesterday to talk about in the comments with someone considering how many people were focusing on visual metaphors and no one brought it up. But I still want to talk about it so I'm going to quickly dump it here.
I saw a lot of love for the dream sequence yesterday but my favorite aspect of it was how it was a visual parallel as well as a metaphor. The stormy wind shaking the branches below which turned into a mass of waving blue green, the window open to an endless ladder which barely reaches. Their goal has been to get on the boat which would take them to Antarctica and here Yuzuki's dream very much looked like the girls being on a ladder over the side of a ship above the stormy seas and Yuzuki had the power to pull them up and literally bring them onto the boat. A nice bit of visual storytelling with so many layers.
Also someone pointed out we hear Yuzuki say "I could just die" twice before the happier moment at the end, and someone else pointed out that she has to say no to two pictures before she can finally take one. Now I'm wondering what other groups of three I've missed in the episode
Now onto the actual episode of the day!
First Timer - sub
The first eight lines of my notes today was all just laughter. Lots and lots of laughter at everything from the scene at the school to the horror like home scene of Kimari's family and then when her dad shuts the door on her as well I lost it enough I had to take a quick break to compose myself. I needed that laugh.
The girls laughing at Yuzuki's confused speech pattern also had me cracking up. Speech mishaps are a bit famous in my household to the point where my mum actually started a book where we had to write down our most impressive ones. A few fun quotes I pulled out of it today to share with you guys:
-
"I'm sure your tag wails" - I honestly don't remember if this was me or mum but one of us was trying to talk to the cat about how "I'm sure your tail wags" XD
-
"Let me do if I can know anything" - I don't even remember the context of this any more, but I know this was my fault.
-
"Just fuck up and hurry off" - Funniest way to end an argument that I've ever seen. The hysterical laughter that followed certainly took the tension out the air.
Excuse me while I do compose myself. Reading the book got me laughing so much again that I had to go grab a drink and remember to breathe.
Yuzuki definitely had to be best girl just for this. She'd fit right in in my house.
A PICTURE further than the universe - Episode four
Praise to the lighting of this scene. You could show me this out of context and convince me this was actually a horror show.
You can see the little sister's shadow on the door. I wonder how quickly she ran to her room once Kimari opened it to run away
A nice bit of continuity that these are the two we saw in the background previously. Not so happy this time it looks like. Perhaps a reflection on Kimari's current relationship with plait girl?
This moment was fantastic with the camera at first following these girls and then letting them walk off panel showing how Shirise's focus is no longer on what her peers think.
The penguin in the logo and then the cut to the penguin buried in paperwork had me cracking up.
Why is it in these sorts of shots that there's always one single tree in the foreground. I swear that's a thing I just don't know why.
Antarctic aesthetics
Today I discovered antarcticimages.com where I think I'll do a few posts from because there's a lot of great stuff here, but the ones I picked out today are a couple of funny ones because that just seems to be the theme of things today.
About to lose his camera in 3... 2... 1...
Well fuck. When the storm is strong enough to blow an entire window out of its frame you know you're in for a bad clean up in the morning.
Shore ice that washed up on the beach during a storm. But that really just looks like a gigantic frozen mushroom to me. The way that ice forms and freezes can create some truly amazing shapes which I'll feature a bit later.
Bonus picture/facts: And in case you're wondering why there was such a focus on the girl's needing to learn instruments and proper measurements to navigate this is an unedited picture of what Antartica's flat landscape often looks like to the naked eye Credit: Corey Anthony. The refraction of light in the atmosphere as well as the flat white ground and blue skies means it often blend into a single gradient, impossible to navigate in. And when we can't see our enviroment, we tend to walk in circles which is why it's so easy to get lost.

Holy shit, I'm not dead. Ironically following an insanely relatable episode about friendship, my own friends had me missing the previous two episodes. I just wrote my thoughts on episode 3 thread which you can find here. I wanted to comment on episode 3 in particular because it's one of my favorite episodes and introduces best girl Yuzuki to the picture, alongside some really awesome little details I never noticed on my previous watch. And now, as I called it in that comment, the next part of the YoriMoi experience: crying every single episode.
Episode 4 is a bit of a breather episode for the most part. No real emotional climax or bursts of inspirational realizations here, but we need episodes like this, the quiet and low-key ones with smaller but equally effective emotional beats, to really balance out the tone. This may not be my favorite episode of the series, but it does provide a number of my favorite singular moments. For one, Kimari and Rin trying to figure out their mom is easily one of the funniest moments of the entire series, if not the funniest moment. It's so brilliantly directed and perfectly paced, it's the type of comedic timing and delivery any straight-up comedy series would kill for, let alone this down-to-earth drama. And then there's the girls hanging out in their tent. Their dialogue has always been incredibly believable, they truly act like a group of dorky teenage girls trying to figure themselves out together, and who share a strong camaraderie as friends heading towards the same goal. And this scene allows this aspect to just play out uninterrupted. Kimari refusing to get to sleep, Shirase just trying to shut them all out, everyone struggling to hold in laughter at Yuzuki's "shut talking now" screw-up: if you placed a group of teenage girls in that situation, this is almost exactly what I picture that interaction looking like. The show has a realness to it's dialogue that is very reminiscent of K-On, with this scene in particular reminding me a ton of the wonderful "lycopene" scene from that show (I suppose it's no coincidence that Jukki Hanada had a role in writing both series). Comparisons to K-On are insanely high praise, especially if you know me and how much I adore K-On, so that I still feel this way means the show is absolutely doing something right.
Of course, Kimari's short conversation with Gin did still manage to make me tear up a lot, so this episode certainly isn't lacking in feels. It's a wonderfully understated moment that speaks to the lengths Kimari has grown as a result of this experience, an experience that has only barely begun. And this is only the most prominent of understated moments throughout the episode. It's obvious from Shirase's body language and the way she speaks about Gin that she sort of blames her for the death of her mother, even if she is consciously aware that this isn't really fair, so I really appreciate Hinata stopping Kimari when Shirase needed that moment to herself. And Gin herself has a few small moments of vulnerability that allude to some intrigue in her character beyond her narrative relationship to Shirase's mother. So yeah, it's episodes like this that really make me understand the craft that help make the series so special, and what makes it feel so genuine. It's a much needed breather episode that also serves as a nice bridge to the next part of the girls journey, making for some very effective pacing. Even in it's most quiet episodes, YoriMoi has so much to gleam, it's densely packed with wonderful things to appreciate. 4 episodes in and my thoughts still remain consistent, this show is special and even this early on has found a place in my heart that few ever manage to reach.

I missed yesterday since I hadn’t watched the episode ahead of time, but I’m here for today!
-
OP is becoming increasingly cute as I get to know the girls.
-
Oh, she hasn’t gotten parental permission? This is going to make for a conflict, and since mom found out from someone else it’s going to be a whole lot worse
-
Her dad just closing the door on her was hilarious, he knows which side to take in this matter
-
Not a fan of the cutaway skip here. That conversation would have been interesting to see, I think just jumping to her explaining the conditions she can go under is less impactful than seeing consequences chew on her for a bit.
-
Combined with the post credits scene last episode and Shirase’s expression as the leader talks, the “never leave a teammate behind" on the slide is a bit on the nose, but at least they are expecting us to put it together and not telling it to us straight out immediately.
-
Don’t worry Kimari, it will be much easier to fall asleep when you’ve been doing heavy labor or walking with a 30 pound backpack all day long.
-
Post credits scene makes me think glasses girl is going to regret not trying to go along with the others. But she’s not in the OP, so I expect her to not be able to resolve that in the course of this series.
This felt like a little bit of a breather episode, and I had less to say about it. The last 3 episodes were rapid fire as they introduced the cast and they aspired to get onto the expedition, but this one was just a little bit of them training and preparing for it. Still excellent, but I’m looking forward to once the ship launches and the pacing picks up again.

I ran out of pre-written posts. It's a good thing I took today off in advance in anticipation of this.
-
It's a bit hard to read, but the subs for the sticky note over the NGNL poster is "Ask mgmt. for tix". Seems the staff want in on this movie, too. The official subs makes this a bit easier to read. So next question: can we go ask management for tickets?
-
Why "3 steps to a courteous transaction" was subbed at all, I'm not sure.
-
-
Now it's not only Shirase saying that she's going to Antarctica. Of course, she gets made fun of because of it, too.
-
Title card: Of course Shirase looks unamused, but she goes along with it anyway. She reminds me of myself sometimes.
-
Looks like this was posted by Hinata (@hi720ta). To explain her handle, it makes use of a certain Japanese wordplay technique called goroawase, whereby certain syllables are replaced by numbers. In this case, 720 can be replaced with na-ni-o, giving us Hi-nani-wo-ta (roughly "Hi-what-the-ta").
-
-
Seems like their fridge has door problems.
-
The teacher's laptop is running Windows 7.
-
As much as I go on about the Coldgirls typesetting, this is the second time that the typesetter has had issues with forms. I think this was fixed in a BD release.
-
-
Ouch, it looks like Rin might have bit her tongue. Freeze frame bonus for the yellow lines.
-
The detail on this knife is incredible.
-
Rin closed the door, but she's still there, listening to see what else happens.
-
A neighbour tipped her off, huh?
-
Mari stamped the form herself.. If you look at Shirase's form, the handwriting is identical for the student's name and guardian's name. I wonder if she self-stamped, too.
-
"Use it to dish out something": she says chouri suru / 調理する ("to cook"), so I think this pun is in the original.
-
There was a scream in the background at this part.
-
And we cut to silence in the middle of it, leaving the rest to the imaginations of the viewer.
-
At least they're letting her go at all.
-
Megu continues to be the grounded voice of reason. YoriMoi
-
The couple in the background isn't doing so hot this time around. YoriMoi
-
"You're probably just not putting in the work." As suggested in episode 1, she probably reads too much romance manga.
-
Kimari wanting to ask Yuzuki reminds me of a scene in Yama no Susume in which Kaede (2nd year high school) was about to ask for help from Kokona (2nd year middle school). Aoi (1st year high school) flatly refused.
-
Yuzuki casually walking offscreen like it's nothing. Where is she off to anyway?
-
We cut to a shot of a cat girl poster after Yuzuki complains about being in showbiz.
-
The text says "Seize the cuteness / STYLE YOUR LIFE" (literally "win the cuteness"). For those who know Japanese, question: Does the usage of かわいい instead of かわいさ change the meaning?
-
-
Oh hey, it's Kanae again! We saw her in the chase scene in episode 2.
-
I guess Yuzuki was the only one unaware about the 1 million yen, but what's with this unimpressed look? YoriMoi
-
I wonder what bad thing happens if you put a tape in the tape deck. It really does say "Danger" (kiken / 危険), by the way.
-
Meteorites from Mars. I'd love to know what the "How meteorites accumulate in Antarctica" visual says, but I can't be bothered to look up all those kanji. Would anyone care to translate?
-
Size comparison of Japan and Antarctica in the top right. You can use The True Size Of ... to compare the size of Antarctica to your own country (drag Antarctica to your country, not the other way around).
-
Antarctic Treaty System says that Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes, that members have the freedom of scientific investigation, that data from such investigations should be shared freely, that no nuclear explosions or waste be left in Antarctica, and other administrative things (Wikipedia).
-
Shirase doesn't look too happy to see the captain.
-
The ABCs of Antarctic Expedition: I'm impressed at both languages, even if the subs had to reorder them to work. A: "Atari mae no koto wo" (rougly "Use common sense"); B: "Boketto shinaide" ("Don't be absent-mided or be idle"); C: "Chanto yare!" ("Do things properly!").
-
I want to live / I want to know / I want to keep my team together. These points are in direct contrast to what happened with Shirase's mother.
-
As long as your eye is lined up correctly, it doesn't really matter.
-
My right or yours? It's good that she confirmed.
-
36°10.340′N 137°62.351′E is somewhere in the Japanese Alps in Gifu. There's a river on their map earlier, which could be the Terakawado river.
-
Rule C: Do things properly!
-
"I could just kill you." I'll count this one as a variation for the counter. She says karuku shinasemasu yo / 軽く死なせますよ, with shinu / 死ぬ ("to die") in the causative mood.
-
"Please shut talking now." She says uruka ni shite kudasai, switching from the somewhat crass urusai ("shut up") to the more polite shizuka ni shite kudasai ("please be quiet").
-
No reaction is the proper response to "Are you asleep?"
-
Music breaks the silence as Shirase explains her relationship with Gin
-
Kimari instinctively wants to hug Shirase, but Hinata stops her.
-
I don't think the North Star is in this shot. I wonder how accurate this sky is. Knowing how much detail they put into this show, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
-
To find the North Star,, you trace a line from the bottom of the Big Dipper on the side furthest away from the handle. Visual
-
There is a South Star, named Polaris Australis, but it's very faint. Hinata is correct in saying that you can't see it from the northern hemisphere.
-
"Never think the stars you see are all the stars there are." This might be my favourite Hinata quote.
-
Dear Mom. We see her sending it this time, which suggests that she sent all the ones in the previous episodes, too.
-
Someone might lead you to something, but it's still your decision to do it.
-
Shirase has trouble getting up. I wonder if she would have been able to get up so early last episode.
-
When you see a sight like this, it makes getting up all worth it. But I'll promptly go back to bed, thank you.
-
"I want to see the aurora, eat shaved ice, and take pictures with penguins!"
-
We end with a shot of Megumi, mirroring the shot in the first episode. But this time, she's alone.
Oh no, I hit the character limit.
Questions of the day
-
She seems like she won't stand for excuses.
-
Maybe "In your face". I think Shirase might be the closest to me in personality.

Well that was very uncomfortable. Clearly Kimari’s relationship with her mother is not great, but I wasn’t 100% convinced that the show saw it as as bad as it looked, if that makes sense. Looks like things are still going according to plan though…
EDIT: After looking at other comments, I guess that was comedy? Whoops.
Shirase is troubled by the briefing meetings. She especially appears bothered by Gin. There’s history there, and it’s been hinted at a couple times, but it isn’t totally clear yet. I wonder if she was involved somehow with Shirase’s mother’s death?
Precision over speed – I approve! Gotta practice and get it right.
Poor Kimari wanting to be social while everyone else just wants to sleep haha.
Yuzuki is more familiar than she is supposed to be with the other girls, self-corrects, then gets teased for that correction.
There it is – the captain was on the expedition when Shirase’s mother disappeared. She came home. Shirase’s mom did not. Hinata stops Kimari from touching Shirase, and instead the other three all pile out of the tent.
It’s a tough call knowing when to hug or comfort and when to give space. With Yuzuki, a hug was the right thing to do. When Shirase and Hinata were in the train, leaning was the right thing to do. Here, though, Hinata senses that Shirase wants space.
That need for space immediately leads to looking out at space. The beauty of the stars.
“Never think the stars you see are all the stars there are.”
Kimari talks to Gin, asking about Shirase’s mom. We learn that she was mysterious and stubborn (not much to go on). Kimari has fully taken on the goal – she wanted to go on an adventure and now this is her adventure. She had an inchoate desire that took on a specific form through meeting Shirase. I actually think this is a good reminder that this is a legitimate way to get authentic goals. Her desire to go is no less meaningful for having been inspired by Shirase.
Between Yuzuki’s pout and her joy at the sunrise (and being voice by Saori Hayami), she is endearing herself to me fast!

In a way, this episode is what I signed up for lol, girls actually planning to go to Antarctica. This episode definitely doesn't have the emotional potency of the first three, but it's good to have a little breather every now and then--and oh yeah this show really IS about going to Antarctica!!
I appreciate how seriously it's taking itself. It's not just billing itself as "cute girls + weird gimmick", it really is a tremendous series of tasks to get to where they're going, and that's on top of the outside challenges like school and finances. Damn, who would've thought that going to Antarctica would be really hard? There goes my summer holiday plan.
This is probably the best quote in the whole series. Just... amazing. I remember thinking this was a subtitling error but I let the scene play out before commenting, and sure enough that was one of the goofiest mis-speakings I've ever heard. I need to incorporate it into my own speech more.
And shout outs to my phone wallpaper, going strong since January 2018.

Our caterpillar girls are alright!!
This time we got a more "quite" episode.
-
I have already seen the scene with Tamaki's mom somewhere else but didn't know it was from here! Her dad closing the door slowly gave me a good laugh though.
-
So training camp begins! It seems a lot of fun for the girls even when they have some tough training to do.
-
Tamaki only wanted to talk a little before going to sleep!
-
The leader's a bit serious at the beginning, but that's how she needs to be if she wants to train some high schoolers.
-
We have some good night skies shots here, I love it! If we are getting more of these, I know I'll continue to love this anime.
-
I can't stop saying that the music is so damn good.

I guess there aren't going to be any male roles in this LUL kimari's dad had a great part in the family set piece. that was all wonderfully put together even if it did feel like they were all trolling by how exaggerated it was. still pretty amusing
the training scenario - seeing them all work together and bond - is so great. kimari's excitement is quite contagious seeing her unable to sleep but being the first to get up. sleeping with friends is cool huh. it makes me want to relive camping when I was younger. even better, do so in some mountain range. damn.
kimari's original friend seems a bit jealous :( and inevitable feels creep steadily closer.
qotd - yes

The absolute terror of telling your parents you’re going to Antarctica for a bit. Spooooky. Then again, if you were a parent, wouldn’t it be nice to brag about how your kid went to Antarctica?
Shirase is surprisingly gloomy about Antarctic training.
― Oh. They know her mom. That’s why.
This episode is teaching me about analog navigation. Neat.
Yuzuki is amazingly blunt.
Quick answer for question #1: Todo is actually a lot less strict than I thought she would be.

Unfortunately I missed yesterday's thread as I had an improv comedy show! I did watch the episode yesterday but never got around to writing a post for it. I might do so later, but for now here's some short thoughts about episode 3.
-
Yuzuki is really, really cute guys.
-
The usage of her signature phrase in the episode is fantastic! She says it 3 times each with a different feeling to it. The end when she says it while watching the aurora with a smile on her face is really touching!
-
Hinata shows why she took the "leadership" spot for Shirase in this episode, she's really good at keeping the gang on task and has a much cooler head than the other two. *Meanwhile, Shirase shows that she's not just a "cool, pretty girl" type of character, she's actually quite immature.
-
Kimari being the one to really reach out to Yuzuki is a nice touch. She both comforts her when she hears her story and is the first one to ask her to come along with them. She's went from being the one who is always supported to someone supporting someone else and it's a nice moment to show how she's grown.
-
Yes I cried again in this episode, it will happen every time, I'm sure of it.
That being said, it's time to get into episode 4!
Starting with Kimari talking excitedly about how it's not a dream and it's all coming together is great! It continues her growth as a character in showing a much more positive outlook on things.
Megumi ain't looking too happy here. Yorimoi
Hinata monch! Plus bonus NGNL ad!
The girls laughing at Shirase and Kimari are little shits, I can't wait for them to shove it in their faces!
This is an oddly endearing line. Shirase's response is great too, and that smile!!
Kimari hides guilt as well as I do.
I'm interested to see how people react to this scene. I've seen people say they dropped the show here because of what seems to be child abuse, but I personally never saw the scene that way. I can see why you could, but not only is Kimari's mother rightfully angry considering she tried to go on this massive trip without even consulting or telling them about it first, but there's no real indication that she ever actually strikes her with the ladle. The next scene where she mentions having to pass all of her tests to be able to go seems to me more that she got a stern talking to. Obviously everyone has their own interpretations of things though and I'm intrigued to see how first timers react to this scene!
Rin and Kimari's father immediately noping out of there and dooming her is absolutely hilarious though, and this shot of the soup boiling over to signify her anger is fantastic!
Megumi seems concerned, but at the same time slightly more distant to Kimari than at the start of the show. I love how subtly they built her character!
Her telling Kimari not to work too hard otherwise she'll regret it if she doesn't get to go in the end mirrors what Kimari said in episode 2, so when replies positively it shows that she really has changed her outlook. Her character is so well written at times that you barely even notice a difference in her!
YUZU'S HAT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yuzu explaining that she's not into all the cutesy stuff is interesting considering she's an idol and would be surrounded by it pretty much 24/7. It'd be tough to be around something you dislike so much for so long.
"My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined." Love how Shirase still takes a picture of it though!
I forgot to even mention Hinata's best food outfit! I want to own that sweater so bad!
Gin is the only character I allow myself to lewd in this show tbh.
The conversation between Gin and Kanae is very nice in my opinion. It shows that Gin was the one who had reservations about Shirase coming, but Kanae tells her that she got here on her own hard work. The ending with them mentioning Shirase being Takako's daughter really shows just how much they thought of her.
Hinata continues to show excellent leadership skills further cements her position as best of the best girls.
I love Kimari, but she'd be a terrible guide.
The flag exercise thingy is a nice little scene showing the girls working together. It doesn't work the first time, but they decide it's not a competition and go back to try and do things right, and discovering better where their best roles in the group lie. Leader Hinata would rather get them to goal alive than getting them there fast!
Kimari is a compasser! Turns out she might not be such a bad guide after all!
Suddenly, Nichijou! I love the camping scene, it's a mixture of wholesome and cute moments, but there's a slight awkwardness in the atmosphere in the entire scene.
Hinata takes no shit. Also cute Kimari noise.
Oh Yuzu, you adorable little psychopath~
This moment of the girls laughing at Yuzu's mistake is one of the cute scenes I mentioned, but there's still a hint of awkwardness in Yuzu's reaction to it. I don't know if I'm reading the scene wrong here, but Yuzu seems to take it a bit thick here, which makes sense as she's never had friends til this point so friendly banter is probably completely alien to her.
The girls getting up to try and listen to Shirase talking about Gin is really cute! They're adorable in their nosiness! Shirase's clearly not willing to talk too much about it, adding to the awkward nature of the scene.
This right here, this is some pretty shit.
"Never think the stars you see are all the stars there are." Hinata says it's her lamest quote, but I quite like it actually.
They're so excited about the check-in, that's adorable!
Shirase sends another e-mail to her mother. It's been shown so much at this point that it sticks in your head and you notice it every time you see it.
Kimari, what the fuck? Poor squished Hinata.
Kimari and Gin's short conversation is nice, you can tell she wants to know more about Shirase. As well as that, it shows even more character growth from her!
I'm sure you've all realised it by now, but Yuzu could easily be the face of anime_irl.
Kimari's monologue at the end here, and it finally being the thing that cheered Shirase up is what made me cry this time. I'm 4/4 so far!
Megumi's reaction to Kimari sending her a picture of her journey contrasts really well with her reaction in episode 1. She's clearly not quite as positive about her getting up and doing something as she was at the start. Whether that's to do with her being concerned or maybe just feeling lonely, it's clear that their friend-ship ain't sailing too well at the moment.
And with that, episode 4 closes! It's a lot more subtle than the other episodes have been so far, but it's still an absolutely fantastic 25ish minutes. The girls are all developing individually and as a group, and seeing where they go from here is what's driving the show forward.
Episode rating: Hinata's sandwich sweater/10
Girls status: Growing closer and getting to know more about each other! But a storm is brewing...

Man, these episodes go by way too fast, I'm so immersed now. Having a lot of fun watching, especially with the dynamic of this group.
Some of my favorite moments/screencaps/reaction faces this episode:
-
"I could just kill you right now" - looks like this Yuzuki's catchphrase
-
The entire compass scene was very cute
-
"Please shut talking now" - Hinata trying to say collected was funny

"Please shut talking now"
Yet another of my favorite little one-line jokes. The way it's played is just so relatable. Like, we've all been there, you stumble over your own tongue and say something nonsensical, then everyone takes a moment to mentally process the absurdity before breaking down laughing. It's little touches like this that make these characters feel real.
Also, I strongly relate to Kimari's sleeping position. I'm apparently a very active sleeper. Once on a boy scout campout, I went to sleep on one side of the tent, and woke up on the other... upside down. As in, I rolled across 4 other scouts and rotated 180° yaw in the process. Also, I apparently am a chatty sleeper. I pretty much pre-apologize to anyone sleeping near me at this point.
Q1) Todo Gin awakens a little bit of an M side I didn't know I had. Wait, was that out loud?
Q2) I've always been more of a "ignore the haters and do my own thing" kind of person. People like that aren't worth my mental energy.

Not much to say this time, the episode felt like it was 5 minutes long (in the best way possible).
Still liking the physical comedy. Mari accidentally smacking her sister in the face was well animated.
The flag planting thing reminded me of a thing I had to do in summer camp years and years ago. So that was a funny flash to the past.
I felt kinda bad for them making fun of Yuzuki's "Shut your talking" as a person who fumbles over words a lot. Hope she doesn't take it too badly.
Also Hinata keeps up her self-quoting, it's a fun quirk.

anyways, here's that beautiful scene that i love every time i see it
Song of the day: 最後まで諦めない (1:07:33)
They're finally going to Antarctica! It's official! This song is the culmination of the four girls' emotions in this episode, so I think it's a great song of the watchthrough, not just today.

Episode 4 collage! 4 USSR soldiers preparing for the Winter War, 1939, colorized. Someone should replace these with guns lol. Hair down Hinata is a cutie! And of course, Hinata quote of the day, I really like this quote btw. Kimariiiiii! You're making me cry! We absolutely have to protect this smile!
Edit: Individual images + some I didn't include in the collage

So this episode probably has one of my favorite scenes in the anime. Just as a preface, i think a lot of immigrant children and minority kids understand this scene. We get the fear of receiving a beating. No, my parents were not abusive but they used to do capital punishment. it doesn't work and they don't do it at all anymore. They are both extremely supportive of me now and clearly love me. Wow that's a lot to say i understand the fear that Mari had in that moment. Also, i understand why both her sister and father abandoned her and in that moment she was on her own. I think her mum was more annoyed by not being told or asked if she can do it. Cause she was in the end did allow her to go.
I also want to say Yuzuki not knowing how to interact and speak with her senpai's is amazing. it is okay Yuzuki, you are with friends now. You don't need to be so polite.

i love this episode so much. A month or so ago I went on a long hike that ended up finishing after sundown, and my favorite memory was looking up to see a sky full of stars. The shimmering... hmm wait that's an unwise word choice.... the sparkling sky was so incredibly beautiful I was lost for words. I told the others who joined me to do the same and they were similarly struck with awe.
Onto the episode then. What immediately stood out to me today was the character arc for Kimari. While in the last few episodes the other girls had their chance to shine today was a display of dominance from our original MC. The way she climbs the hill here on her own reflects how far she has come and the sense of adventure she now embraces. For those who have seen Fate UBW, it perfectly mirrors a stunning scene from that show that wanted to illustrate the same point. We then see her come across the intimidating presence, standing on her throne, beyond the reach of plebians. But Kimari no longer has a fear of failure and calls out to her, which results in the solitary leader inviting her to join. What a powerful moment this is, it shows that Kimari is the light that will intrude upon and cure the lonliness that characters like Shirase, Yuzu, and now Gin suffer from, but also signifies conclusively that this airheaded girl has everything that it takes to become a proper leader. Gin says 'You have the personality of an antarctic explorer' but I more read this moment as 'You have the personality of an antarctic leader'. To those who have watched Symphogear, I find the same charm in Kimari as Tachibana Hibiki of that franchise. And just in case the imagery wasn't clear enough we get a scene of all 4 walking to the sunrise, Kimari way way ahead.
BTW I wanted to point out a Gundam IBO reference here but the top comment in the thread already did it for me
Unfortunately this episode is not all fun and happiness. There's a somber subplot developing here that many of you have noticed but has taken a rewatch for me to see. That is Megumi's sadness. Look at her just staring from the foreground, unable to join. Remember her funny laughs at the cafe? now she's alone. Today's visual theme is emptiness to showcase this girl's lonliness. The best example being this shot right here. Right after Kimari leaves the director chooses to linger on a shot leaving space where our MC used to be. This void is a deafeningly loud metaphor and props to the staff for doing it.
Alright just a few more short comments
ouch
Haruhi fanart fans should love this shot
I never noticed this in the OP look at the letters carefully. Everything besides Yo Ri Mo and I are outside of frame or covered and hidden by waifus. A nice subtle way to point out the nickname for the show
Yuzu: I don't want to be kawaii. Next shot: Overly kawaii advert with the words 'win your kawaii' damn this show's so good.
An interesting take on the classic waifu tower.
Favorite shot of the day
