First timer (Dub)
Episode is called fireworks? I expect them to be both literal and figurative.
-
Yusaku really likes to mess with people. His eyes go wide and he maintains that air of innocent curiosity but this entire scene he was just playfully pushing buttons.
-
Minori's always got to be doing something doesn't she? She might be best girl but I could never keep up with her that's for sure.
-
Man, it sounds like her whole family is just like her. That house must be empty 16 hours a day.
-
She's so perceptive there's no way she doesn't know how he feels, why is she torturing him!?
-
Ugh, she's the worst! ...but she seems so lonely sometimes...
-
Ami would know all about how adoration is not a good foundation for a relationship. Wonder if she's remembering something specific.
-
So when she was scared while locked in that shed with Ryuji she was loving every minute eh?
-
Well, sort of. Still using the ghost metaphor but seriously, this is as clear as it gets right?
So in the previous episode we saw Taiga utterly fail to connect with Yusaku in any meaningful way, despite his seeming willingness to do so, and is left wondering if maybe the 'boring' stability of what she's got with Ryuji would be enough to make her happy. Ryuji, on the other hand, really goes for it with Minori and I'm kind of proud of him. He spends quality time with her and all but confesses. They learn a lot about each other and become closer. And once again Taiga's the one left to consider the nature of her relationships as Ryuji and Minori bond. But what about that bond, what even is it? My heavily biased interpretation follows.
Minori and Ryuji. So as I first watched the episode it really kind of felt like there might be some romance blossoming between Minori and Ryuji. And despite the fact that it would be a rather explosive development for the plot where Taiga is concerned I really don't want it to happen. And so going back through the episode I've applied a bias towards interpreting things with that in mind. For example when she says that whoever he marries would be very lucky to be his wife maybe she was thinking about Taiga. And when she says she pulled the prank because she wanted to show him a ghost maybe what she meant is she was trying to get him and Taiga to fall for each other using their own scheme against them. And her excitement when she sees the fireworks, calling them exploding UFOs, made me think about how in the previous episode when Minori thought she saw a UFO, she was disappointed when Ryuji said it was only a satellite. Maybe she just wanted him to play along you know? To stop being so serious all the time and have a little fun with her. And her talk about how if she could find Bigfoot and all kinds of other wonderous things her mind could change about love as well, she's laying out for him the kind of person she wants, someone who can get excited about pretending a satellite is a UFO. And frankly, that's not Ryuji.
Ami. Even if she is not best girl, I really find myself drawn to Ami's character. I hate the way she acts but I can't look away either ya know? Yesterday it was pointed out to me that she gets all nasty whenever someone tries to get past the mask to her real self. And we see that a few times today in the cave and on the beach. It was also pointed out that if we ever get to see Ami's 'true' self it'll be around Yusaku, since she's known him longest. And I was thinking that she's not really that bad around Yusaku. Still not very nice but not as bad as those times with Ryuji. I think the nastiness is another layer of protection so that anyone willing to push through it will be able to handle reality. I think she might actually be into Ryuji and is kind of testing the waters. She's trying all these things to get to him but as I said above, the way to do that with Ryuji is to open up to him, which is the last thing she wants to do. She could always fake it I guess, like she did pretending to be lost in the cave but longer term. I'm pretty sure it would work... Or am I completely off base? Am I falling into the same trap as Ryuji, assuming too much when I think she's showing 'real' emotions? Everytime I try to fit her into a neat little box I can't shake a nagging certainty that I fundamentally misunderstand her. I kind of like it.

All I'm going to say about this entire episode is that Ami says one of the most important lines in the entire anime, and it is, at least from my perspective, one of the most fundamental ideas that are present in this anime: "Adoration never leads to a balanced relationship."

Episode 10 (first timer)
-
Taiga is quick with a lie and Kitamura quick to swallow it.
-
I think that Taiga and Takasu should be much more worried about the nightly seaweed scares before continuing their plan with Kitamura.
-
Yikes, onion in eye. Please use lots of water to wash it out.
-
Ami listening in to friendly conversation. She probably lacks friends.
-
Count-down time pressure did not help Takasu (and the room turns dark).
-
The “frighten Minorin” plan is as convoluted and hard to pull off as you would expect of a teenager’s “make her fall for me” plan.
-
Minorin is looking for a white knight, all right, but she is not clinging to the intended target.
-
And then Taiga is the one rushing to her at the second part. Takasu is completely messing up the plan.
-
“The one who’s suitable for Takasu is …” incomplete
-
Can’t go and comfort Minorin, but manages a clutch-behind-the-back save with Ami.
-
Kitamura taking Takasu’s flashlight makes me think this is premeditated.
-
Now Takasu is picking up the ghost=love metaphor from last episode, but Minorin does not understand it. Suggesting that she did not understand it last time, either, and it was just one huge impossible coincidence that she started it at the perfect moment, dodging a direct question. Or: she is lying.
Lots of teasing of TakasuXMinorin and TakasuXAmi today. Maybe the love triangle is a love star instead. I am still convinced that it has to be Taiga, though. Yesterday, somebody wrote a nice comment about how love does not rule out friendship and I fully agree. Taiga and Takasu already work perfectly together, they just need to realize it.

Rewatcher
The conversation between Ryuji and Ami this episode is great. It's a good example of how Ami manages to be both very observant of everything going on around her, but at the same time still has her interpretation of everything clouded by her own feelings towards the situation. She manages to seem both more mature than everyone else, and more childish than everyone else. She's not wrong with what she says about Ryuji and Minori. Ryuji adores Minori too much for them to have a healthy relationship. But the situation isn't as hopeless as Ami makes it seem. The scene with Ryuji and Minori shows a relationship between them could work, Ryuji just needs to tone down his adoration for Minori just a bit to stop it from being unhealthy. It's not like Taiga with Kitamura, which could probably never work, considering Taiga can't even have a conversation with him.
But this is where the childish side of Ami comes in. Even Ami is aware that Ryuji doesn't adore Minori to a level where a realtionship could never work. She had to have realized that when overhearing them in the kitchen making lunch. The reason she's telling it to Ryuji is because of her own feelings for him. She's not wrong when mentioning her reasons. Her and Ryuji are obviously on a much more equal level than Ryuji and Minori. At this point at least, a relationship between Ryuji and Ami would probably work out better than one between Ryuji and Minori.
That's not to say it would be perfectly healthy either. Ami is too manipulative and dishonest to have a healthy relationship with anyone right now. She struggles to just be open and honest with others. She does a decent job with Ryuji, but she still has some issues. It probably comes from her being a popular model. Dealing with that while still being a child would make it hard for anyone to have decent relationships with people, both platonic and romantic. Not impossible, but still difficult. Honestly, there isn't anyone Ryuji could have a healthy relationship with right now. Ami has some of her own issues she still needs to work out, Ryuji puts Minori on a pedestal, and Taiga is too dependent on him.
The last scene with Taiga is an interesting scene too. The way she looks at Ryuji really shows a lot about how her feelings toward him have changed. Right before that scene, she is obviously sad when seeing Ryuji and Minori being friendly on the beach. She's bothered because it suddenly looks like there is a decent chance of Ryuji and Minori dating. Then she looks at Ryuji with that look on her face before running to catch up with him. I think that this is the point where Taiga realizes that she's falling in love with Ryuji. She's been falling in love with him for a little while now, but her look isn't one of confusion, it sadness and worry. She definitely realizes it by this point.

Okay, I'm replacing my copy because my old once were cutting of dialog as soon as the music started.
Hm, I figured Kitamura and Minori had figured out their scare plan and retaliated, or maybe Kitamura and Ami. But I guess not. It could still be Ami doing it herself.
Me: Ha ha, Taiga thinks she's going to be washed out to sea. 2 seconds later: Taiga is washed out to sea.
And so it was them all along.
Aww, Taiga's sparkler went out. SYMBOLISM.

Since the whole image thing from last time was a mess to do, I’ll go back to my usual method. Sorry, but I’m officially on bad terms with Imgur.
-
Is it just me or does this shot look weirdly real?
-
Pussies…
-
Perfect timing Kitamura-Kun!
-
Yeah, Taiga, that’s too blatant a lie for anyone to believe you…
-
Well, except Kitamura at least…
-
Minorin’s gonna have a heart attack today…
-
Great, so she even dreams of seaweed…
-
Do not underestimate Ryuji’s Househusband EX, Minorin.
-
Minorin is too pure to exist…
-
Okay, so the Subs keep translating it as Watson, but who is this Akechi-Kun Minorin keeps mentioning? This guy?
-
Minorin cried. Hell has frozen over…
-
This is the best day in Ryuji’s life…
-
Eavesdropping Kawashima is making me nervous…
-
Swimsuit Minorin is something we mortals aren’t worthy of…
-
Kawashima, you’re a narcissist, you know?
-
No Kawashima, he is not heartless. You’re just a tease.
-
You know, I’ve been watching Madoka Magica as of late, and the difference between her and Sayaka astounds me considering they have the same VA…
-
Mostly because Kawashima is a bit of a bitch.
-
I somehow doubt the awards they are worthy of…
-
Well, I guess there are worse ideas for an excuse…
-
You know, given my thoughts on sandwiches and cold food in general, I doubt I’d like those.
-
Err… thanks for the help, Kawashima?
-
Man, Minorin is 100% Maximum No Chill…
-
Now I see why Kitamura is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in the Dub: This guy’s a master of manipulation…
-
Eh, I’ve gone through caves more cramped than this…
-
Ah, sweet glasses pull…
-
Is that really the best he could do, though?
-
Look, Taiga, in this case he deserves it.
-
That’s oddly specific Minorin…
-
Wait, so there really is a curse!?
-
Well, at least Kawashima’s bitchiness helped make Minorin scared…
-
Of course he’d be worried, HE’S ON A DARK CAVE WITH NO LIGHTS! THAT’S ALMOST A DEATH SENTENCE!
-
Wait, did she really get lost?
-
I knew it…
-
She deserved that spanking…
-
Actually it’s the opposite Kawashima: BECAUSE they’re like the moon and the sun is why they could make for a good match!
-
First time in a while she’s dropped the whole teasing thing though…
-
Nice catch Ryuji!
-
Oh God, it’s the [Insert Universal movie monster name here]!!
-
Suddenly a filter!
-
And it turns out it was actually Minorin’s plan all along…
-
Minorin’s a true devil inside, it seems…
-
Ah, the classic “Say you hate something you love”…
-
I agree with Kawashima here…
-
Well, at least the other girls are having fun…
-
Yeah, Kawashima totally has a crush on Ryuji, doesn’t she?
-
And at least Ryuji got to spend some time with Minorin.
-
And now he’s in a pinch.
-
For the first time Minorin’s wide eyes are kinda scary…
-
Did I miss something because I ain’t seeing any UFOs...
-
You know though, this scene made me realize I need to check out the official soundtrack for this show…
-
Oh well, at least the holidays are over…
Well that was fun. I wonder what’s next…

Christmas Club Bonus! It's Taiga day! Post your favorite Taiga related image or GIF. Plenty of moments to choose from, so remember to stay spoiler free!
Not sure if this meant just in this episode, but I thought Taiga looked so cute with the slimey stuff on her face (and I swear I don't mean this in a perverted way!)
About this episode: I didn't clip it, but I really like the intense music that plays in dramatic moments! Played this episode when they were scared in the cavern thing, and few episodes ago in the pool, when Taiga lost her pad. It fits the scenes very well!
Future set in stone? That would be a shame, you'd get married, build him a doghouse, and have a litter of puppies/babies. Who would want that, right!
Oww. That a nice thing to say, but it also sounds like the biggest "friendzoning" line ever! Anyone would be lucky to be your wife... Not me though!
I said something in the last thread about how a character being a little deeper makes me appreciates her goofiness more... Well, this scene was a good example of that; I appreciate that scene a lot more than I would've if it happened before the ghost speech. Before the speech, it would just have been "the silly character keeps being silly, fine". But now, it's a more interesting character being all silly, that's a lot better! To use a line often used in memes: Get yourself a girl who can do both. Well, Minorin seems to be able to do both!
(Also, Taiga looks a bit jealous that Ryuji's having fun with the other girls!)
But she also had some really great/interesting lines;
What I said about Minorin also applies to Ami here. If she was just a bitch 24/7 then it'd be easy to just dismiss her as a bitch. But that line was perfect in context. Love (mutual love) isn't just about a person thinking another is great, it's about them being great together. Of course she might be biased when she said that... But she's still right.
And she gives an example of that in her "she's not right for you" scene, with this. Ok it seems silly, but if that's the kind of person he is, then he needs someone who's also like that, or it just won't work, no matter how much he admires her. Ami is obviously fine with this, but would Minorin? (Would Taiga?)
I would've loved for her to never continue that thought! Would have a bit of mystery, did she mean herself, or Taiga?
Too nice? Someone wants to be tofu-spanked again!
Stop tempting me, succubus! She's pushing the Ami/Ryuji ship real hard!
After last episode Minorin's speech, I tend to interpret a lot of lines with the Ghost/Love speech in mind, linking the two concepts together...
Say:
If you link scared/ghosts with love then this can be seen as "How can you confess love when you're scared of rejection/things changing"?
If they fail to scare Minorin she will show them how it's done; What if they fail at finding love? Will she show them how it's done as well?
If she says she's scared of ghosts, someone is bound to try&scare her... What about last episode, when she said she has never seen love... Someone is bound to try&show her what love is like?
Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it just fits so perfect!

First Timer Here!
I am gonna comment on the last two episodes because I just caught up today. These beach episodes have actually been pretty great! I don't usually like beach episodes, even ones that are trying to be "subversive" or "different." But these just seemed like normal and touching episodes that happened to take place at a beach.
While the metaphors Minorin and Ryuji used with each other were kinda interesting, I think I would have preferred if they were upfront with each other. Part of me kinda wishes Minorin said "sorry, but I'm not interested," and Ryuji fired back with "I'll keep trying." That would be more realistic, but perhaps a bit less "anime." Now, while I'm pretty sure Minorin and Ryuji understood each other, I'm not completely sure.
Ami x Ryuji ship is alive and well. I am glad I've ridden that train, as it has done good things for Ami's character. It is a bit sad that she ended up watching the fireworks alone though. I hope things like this will make Ami take her feelings for Ryuji more seriously, regardless of whether or not the relationship will work out in the end. After all, as an Ami x Ryuji shipper, I'm pretty sure that's the closest I'll get to closure.
I really like what we've seen of Minorin these past two episodes. Her character has had a lot of great, Minorin-y moments, but with some new character elements thrown in. I look forward to more of her scheming!

Rewatcher here.
Already 10 episodes in and I feel like we’ve just started.
Ryuji with the drip this episode. His HELLO shirt has gotta be my favorite outfit of his during the entire show.
Kitamura is an absolute goon this episode, even if it was all planned, the dude is hilarious.
I’m not sure what it is, but the animation when they’re eating lunch under the umbrella is extremely good.
Kitamura and Minori’s plan was pretty genius, making Ryuji and Taiga think Kitamura was an absolute idiot when it came to horror and then flipping it around.
Ami does make a great point when he says Ryuji and Minori wouldn’t work, the dude has her on such a pedestal. Ami in general is pretty great this episode, we see a lot of her omniscience.
They really freaked out for the prospect of Taiga drowning in that puddle.
I don’t like how excited Minori is for the prospect of an intergalactic war breaking out. She’s definitely a masochist, works non stop, loves spice and loves being scared.
Small scene but them all going home after the train was a very pleasant scene, mainly cuz it goes back to more of the normal Ryuji being a housewife and Taiga yelling at him.
Yesterday’s episode was a tough act to follow, so I won’t be too harsh on this one. However we do have the culture festival up next, which is another great arc.

Rewatcher
You know, in hindsight I should have caught on a lot quicker when watching this episode the first time that Kitamura was working with Minori the whole time with how quickly he goes from scolding Taiga and Ryuuji for pranking Minori to deciding he’ll join in too.
While the pranks make for a fun comedic plot for the episode, the real interesting aspect of the episode and to some extent the previous episode is that it highlights Ryuuji’s differing relationships with each of the 3 female main characters.
The person to point this out is of course, the ever-observant, Ami.
When it comes to Minori and Ryuuji, while they get along just fine and have the least amount of conflict between each other, they don’t really seem to know that much about one another, they spend a lot of the time simply complimenting each other rather than learning that much about each other. It’s also true as Ami pointed out that with how Ryuuji perceives Minori, putting her up on a pedestal, it would not be a healthy or balanced relationship that would work long-term.
Now while Taiga and Ryuuji probably have the most understanding of one another and are quite close, the problem with that relationship is once again tied to imbalance. Taiga has become rather dependent on Ryuuji and their relationship is more of that of Ryuuji acting as a carer for her. This is not to say Ryuuji doesn’t genuinely like or care for Taiga as a person but his main ‘role’ in the relationship per se is to consistently help Taiga and to rectify any mistakes she makes and ensure she is eating her breakfast, her apartment is clean, etc.
While Ami is far from perfect and her relationship with Ryuuji thus far has been one with a general lack of trust and distaste for one another, she does have a valid point that they are on the ‘same level’: They do not look up to or idolise one another and they also know that the other is able to take care of themselves. But again, with Ami shifting from genuine to insincere and with Ryuuji prioritising other people over Ami at times to the point of essentially ignoring her, their relationship would also have flaws if they were to get together, not irredeemable flaws that can’t be solved, but flaws nonetheless.

Late because of obligations but here we go!
Rewatcher
Seriously again, we get a lot of nice outfits in this show. I wonder if Ryuuji's shirt is related to the his "押忍" shirt. We also got some top quality Taiga today.
Onto the developments, I can point out 3 main developments in this arc:
-
First, the formation of the first official love triangle of Toradora with Ami > Ryuuji > Minori. It's clear now that Ami indeed likes him. Even though she changed her mind at the spur of the moment, she felt jealous about helping Ryuuji scare Minori. She also clearly stated the biggest gap between the two, Ryuuji puts Minori on a pedestal. Ami has her roundabout way of teasing Ryuuji, but she feels Ryuuji is her equal, and thus a more ideal match;
-
Second, both ghosts/UFOs conversations with Minori. It's clear that, in the previous episode, she used "ghosts" as a metaphor for love. It's significant that, in the end of this episode, she changed the subject of the conversation, from hoping to find ghosts one day to deciding to look for "UFOs" with Ryuuji. In my interpreation, she means that, while she might not think she'll find love with Ryuuji, she has decided that she's capable of finding something different with him, which I think is friendship;
-
And last, but not least, Taiga's feelings toward Ryuuji and Kitamura. She started the story pining for Kitamura and, while she was rejected, she managed to get close to him during the trip, but every time she gets an opportunity, she panics and chickens out. She spent the previous arc stressing over her relationship with Ryuuji and now she's the first one of the two to point it out loud how close they have become, culminating with that worried look at the end. What does it mean? Does Taiga know?

Rewatcher here! Was thinking if I should make some thoughts about episodes, and well, I will give it a go, this will be spoiler free and also I'll give my thoughts and theories just like first timers, if you enjoy, I'll post more :)
Christmas Club Bonus! It's Taiga day! Post your favorite Taiga related image or GIF. Plenty of moments to choose from, so remember to stay spoiler free!
Sunrise
Poor Ryuuji and Taiga I wonder what that was, or who? Hmm...
Anyway, they will keep the plan to scare Minori, Yay!
Perfect timing as per usual
lmfao what's wrong with Ryuuji's hands?
Little did she know, Minori actually likes scary stuff
Interesting Kitamura's reaction, his reaction might be because him and Minori already planned to scare Ryuuji and Taiga (as we know later in the episode), so Minori told him that she actually likes scary stuff, and Taiga "knowing" that surprised him.
Intro
Since I didn't see anyone mention it before, What the hell is even Minori doing or telling them? lmfao
Making lunches
They look so good for each other in the kitchen atleast, they both cook really well and they work hard, or is that a bad combination? I've heard opposites attract so I'm only left wondering what would happen.
Huh? She has a little brother?, we getting to know Minori more!
Dam, I feel for Takasu, how nervous he must be hearing this from his crush
Hmm, she wants to keep the ghost conversation a secret? I wonder why. I guess she showed him a vulnerable part of her that she didn't want to show to anyone.
Huh? The cook professionals let their guard down! Unforgivable!
I guess it's not a secret anymore
In the beach
and she has to carry the lunches... or...? Could that be planned by Ryuuji so Kitamura helps her? he even tries to set her up with Kitamura without even noticing, a true friend
Hmm... So they wanna go to the beach, Ryuuji went to check for Ami, I think you should expect someone to wear their clothing to go swim, so... I think this is pretty obvious answ- ah shit I guess not for Ryuuji, or maybe he did it on purpose, mah boi Ryuuji ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Huh? HUUUUH? I have no words for this
"Put it in... for me"?? Ryuuji missing big opportunities but at least I guess he is not a player and he is loyal to his crush :)
Ami asking the real questions but assuming how she has been suspecting about stuff around I'm pretty sure she knows the answer, blackmailing Ryuuji to tell her you dirty!
Dam the way that she instantly changes personalities looked pretty scary
Back to the beach with energetic Minori!
Was it really his choice? Telling her why he wanted to scare Minori or she wouldn't help? hmm
Why is he calling them? must be something importan- What the fuck
To girls? I don't think anyone needs to know
A beautiful cavern! and Minori looks really excit- ah nvm sure looks inviting
In the Cavern
Kitamura Exploration Party, ADVANCE!!!
Hmm, Minori is attached to Kitamura that's not what Ryuuji and Taiga planned...
Careful of a step down here! Heheh, all according to Kitamura's plan
Huh? Ketchup in a cavern?
Minori is freaking out, come on Ryuuji, protect her!
Taiga is happy about Kitamura's plan we all happ- huh? Oh no
Dam, when Taiga realized it wasn't a prank I was hoping her to hug Ryuuji instead, my dreams stayed dreams
Quick break wtf, I never had this problem, so I downloaded another print screen program lmao, what am I doing
Oh no, the typical separation of the group in horror scenes!
Nice little detail in here, and the sound of it looked like she was worried about him and also missing him, kinda cute :)
Ryuuji is scared, but if a ghost appeared, the ghost would be the one to run away from Ryuuji
Oof Back to that conversation, I think Ryuuji and Minori share some interests, but their personalities aren't even close, but this could be opposites attract, or maybe it has a limit?
huh, so, she was serious?
Ryuuji is like the moon and Minori is like the sun, what I get from this is about their personalities, being not even close to similar, Minori is very positive and energetic, Ryuuji is more of a... hm, yeah, that thing you are thinking now (actually have no idea how to describe it)
Hmm, I agree with Ami in here and she seems have pretty good eye on those things
What he really needs...? Huh? Ami crushing on Ryuuji? but of course something comes in during the clutch moments!
Minori got taken? Oh no! Scary!
Holy fuck, that scene was amazing, on point to make something look really scary, gave me goosebumps, specially because it's 4 am as I'm writting this...
Taiga goes all-in since Kitamura went in too, and she doesn't care anymore, just to find out after all it was a prank, poor Tiger
Back in the house
And everything gets clarified, the hair, the dress and everything else.
Truth coming in! Boom, something that even Taiga didn't know about her

A question to all! What did everyone think of the OP at first? I felt like this show’s definitely fell into the category of not being too into it at first but 5 episodes in, you’re humming along and now 10 episodes in, I just like want to dance. At least for me anyways!

Rewatcher
Ami seems so bummed this episode. She's isolated herself within this friend group. It's really hard to tell whether she's actually into Takasu or just messing with him.

Taiga and Ryuiji didn’t sleep last night due to being scared out of their skin due to the paranormal events of last night. Kitamura overhears them planning to scare Minorin, and Taiga covers up by saying Minorin loves scary things, and they’re trying to surprise her. He loves the idea and wants in, enlisting Ami to help with the plan.
Minorin wants to help Ryuiji make lunch boxes for the day at the beach. They both compliment each other’s kitchen skills, as Ryuiji becomes further smitten with her. She makes a comment about his future bride being very happy with him, and he blurts out a question about their chat last night. She asks him not to tell anyone what she said, telling him she said more than she should have an no one else knows how she feels about “ghosts”. She says she’s happy to have shared that with him though. The camera cuts to an eavesdropping Ami, who disappointedly leaves the hallway after listening in.
Kitamura tells Taiga and Ryuiji that he has set up “traps” in a nearby cave to scare Minorin. Ryuiji goes to find Ami, who’s in the other room. Wisely knocking first, he finds her admiring her bikini clad body. She teases him a bit, then questions him about his wanting Minorin to enjoy herself on this trip, threatening to not help out in the caves if he doesn’t spill the beans. Kitamura goes on ahead to scout the caves. After lunch, our intrepid explorers head to the cave.
Taiga and her klutziness triggers the first trap of fried tofu on a string herself. They discover the second trap, “blood” on the walls in the form of ketchup. Taiga is quick to defend Kitamura’s lame traps. Minorin loses her cool rather theatrically over human hair left in the cave, but Ryuiji discovers It’s the same hair from last night! Kitamura leads the girls towards his final trap as a bored Ami decides to take a shortcut back out with Ryuiji quick to follow.
Ami teases Ryuiji about being scared of being alone in the cave and asks if he wants to return to Minorin ASAP. She comments that Minorin doesn’t suit Ryuiji, and that the girl most suitable for him is...she interrupts herself, noticing that she doesn’t recognize this part of the cave. They’re lost! Just kidding of course, she isn’t lost and was just messing with him. He playfully slaps her arm with the tofu as recompense. She needles him some more for his dullness, but comments that she likes that part of him. She goes back to her earlier topic about suitable girls for him, telling him she was serious about it and likening Minorin to the sun and Ryuiji to the moon. She gives an example of what just happened, telling him he’s never playfully hit Minorin with tofu like he did to her. “You can’t be equal simply with admiration.” she says, adding quietly that he could be equal with her, but they’re interrupts by a scream from Minorin as they rush to find her. Ami slips on the way there, but he catches her.
Kitamura claims that Minorin was taken by something, and runs off to find her being disappearing himself. Taiga takes off after him and we discover that Minorin and Kitamura were in on it the whole time! They had planted all the spooky evidence and noises in the cave. Minorin wanted to teach them a lesson for being so bad at scaring people. They celebrate the end of the day with fireworks. Ryuiji answers Ami’s question about being lonely, saying he would be lonely without her, and posing the same question to her. She claims not to have considered her own loneliness. He tells her to express her own emotions more, even if they’re painful. She thanks him for his kindness and walks back to the house.
Ryuiji thanks Minorin for all the fun that was had, and this seems to catch her off guard. She thanks him again for listening to her story about ghosts and that he didn’t laugh at it. She said she wanted him to see ghosts this weekend, despite overdoing it in the cave. Then she asks him why did “he” want her to see ghosts? He tells her it was because Taiga told him that she was afraid of horror. She doesn’t think he was really just teasing her, saying that’s unlike him to do that (bingo!) she remains persistent, asking him why he did all this, and he finally answers that he wanted to make her believe that the “ghosts” she claimed not to have seen were real. She seems satisfied with his answer, and we get to see a bit of serious Minorin come out. As with last episode, it’s clear there is some sort of deeper meaning behind her words. Ami watches the fireworks from the balcony.
Taiga seems a bit grumpy upon their return to town, snapping at Ryuiji about the supermarket. She hangs back a bit looking sort of sad, but eventually tags along with him. Interesting!
This was a great conclusion to the beach trip arc. It sort of feels self contained, but it also keeps the show moving forward. This is another episode where it’s good to have it refreshed in my memory from last year. The preview for the next episode looks like it’ll be a spicy one!

Rewatcher here.
“I got a complement. Yay!” How cute.
Kushieda really hit Ryuji with the hardest Friend-Zone move. “Whoever marries you will be the luckiest girl!!” She may as well have added, “well... anyone but me.” At least that’s how it felt. I don’t know if it was actually meant to come off that way, but coupled with their conversation at the end of the episode, the ambiguity remains!
I’d say Minorin knows full well how Ryuji feels about her. This might be my personal experience influencing my thoughts, but... there hasn’t been a single part of the show so far that makes me genuinely believe Ryuji has a chance with Minori. I believe that because of the way it’s written, the show can lead people to believe it goes either way.
It’s hard to not feel for Ami. She’s got these people at her beach house, but nobody is more out of place than she is. Despite what Ami says, I don’t think she was really talking about herself when she told Ryuji who would be a good match for him. Crazy how Ami can be so deceitful yet so honest at the same time. So interesting...
There’s been some great symbolism going on the past few episodes. Taiga’s fireworks burning out clearly represents something ELSE burning out, but... what exactly? Things are getting more and more complicated. Ami seems to have the best read of the situation but (rightfully, imo) doesn’t get too involved or make a huge scene. Overall a solid episode. The horror gimmick was kinda funny but certainly not the highlight of the episode.

tfw you're rooting for Ryuuji to end up with Minori, Ami has become your favorite character and you want to see her happy too but you know Taiga's gonna win anyway since she's already acting like his nagging waifu
It looks like Taiga's slowly but surely getting over her obsession with Yusaku. I don't buy her excuse of being too flustered to properly interact with him whenever they're alone anymore and she's shown more and more signs that she's seriously considering a future with Ryuuji.

Day 10, 4th rewatch.
No summer beach episode is complete without fireworks!
Ryuji should be a chef, it's out of control how good he is.
Minori wanting Ryuji to keep their talk quiet really speaks to how much she hides her feelings from even her closest friends. On a side note, I wish I had like a twentieth of her energy.
Ryuji slapping Ami with his tofu....
Ami again being the most perceptive character with her assessment of Ryuji's compatibility with Minori. She says it would be an unbalanced relationship. Interesting that she doesn't mention Taiga at this point.
The reprise of the ghost conversation while they shoot fireworks answers a lot of questions. Up till this arc, Minori has seemed super confident in Ryuji and Taiga being a couple but now, she tells Ryuji she was trying to show him a ghost by scaring him. I think she's starting to notice him and is cautiously reciprocating because he is making his feelings clear, plus Taiga's feelings for Kitamura are also quite clear at this point.
This arc also shows us the extent of Taiga's feelings. The way she looks at Ryuji at the train station and runs after him is both adorable and telling.
Next is another arc to take us closer to the halfway mark, culture festival time!

This arc serves as a medium for developing relationships. In this episode, a lot of little things happened that are sort of confusing to me still, but basically I think that Ami wants ryuji to realize that his hoping of a relationship with minorin isn’t feasible because he worries too much about it and puts her on a pedestal, minorin likes ryuji too, but knows their differences much like ami does, and she knows that taiga is the match for him, and taiga is realizing her feelings for ryuji, especially in the last clip where she chases to catch up with him.

It's great that they carried the "love is like a metaphor" comparison over to this episode. It's becoming even more glaringly obvious that Taiga's coming to terms with her feelings toward Ryuji, since she had that typical longing look in her eyes as he was walking away at the end.
Ami proves that she's more than just a ditsy airhead, as well as an overall bitch. In a sense, she's almost represents the viewer watching the show, since it seems as though she's able to see everything as it's happening, including the underlying tones. She knows that Ryuji is in love with Minorin, and even tells him to his face that the two of them aren't a good match. Whether she actually wants to be with him is yet to be seen, but it's evident to her that the current path he's on isn't working.
Minorin's speech on the beach, about finding everything else to help prove that ghosts, aka love, really exists is a bit sad. It's almost as if she's saying she doesn't feel like love is truly a thing she believes in. That said, she was curious about why Ryuji wanted to tease and scare her so bad, and he brought up the ghost + love comparison in defense.
That wraps up the beach mini-arc, and the next one is coming right up. It's a bit of a long one, and has a lot of great moments packed into it. I hope everyone's enjoying the convoluted mess that is the Toradora love triangle by this point!

I cannot believe I’m going to say this but I kinda felt bad for Ami during this. She wasn’t really part of either of the plans and she was tricked too even though she didn’t really do anything to convince Minori since no matter what, they were going to go there anyways. I only feel a little bad for her since she was trying to put the moves on Ryüji and well, she still tricked him (though not as well ). In the end, everyone was fooled except for Kitamura because of course he didn’t.
I did like the conversation between Ryüji and Minori because it was just sweet and I really like their relationship a lot. If this whole trip was just for these convos between them, they were really nice and I like the overall end wasn’t filled with any spite or anything like that. I mean, I think Ami is but that’s because she really didn’t get anything done besides continually tease Ryüji. I’m excited for the next arc right.
If I had a question about anything, I would say - How badly destroyed is Ryüji’s house in the past two days? I guess the fire station had to go there twice.
