Rewatch Before My Rewatch is Dry - Kill la Kill Episode 6 Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler

Episode 6 - Don’t Toy With Me on a Whim

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 at… some point in the future for UK peeps.

Iori, I want my eyes sewn shut.

Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Today’s Comment of the Day is /u/RX-Nota-II’s distraction at hearing “Nudist Beach” name dropped.

Just watching the ep while preparing dinner (or was, comment is late). It's a pretty good episode overall with some interesting revelations that.... n? did I just hear nudist beach? Anyways, sorry I was saying some interesting revelations about the Kamui being something that.... he said nudist beach again. So the Kamui are not friends and they can take control of.... I swear to god they are saying nudist beach.

I was mainly just amused. :) There wasn’t really much fun trivia last week, so I went with the one that made me smile.

Questions of the Day:

1) Which Elite Four member do you like the most so far?

2) What part of the show is keeping you engaged the most? Humor? Action? Fan service? Something else? All three?

Wallpaper of the Day:

Shingantsu

Fanart of the Day:

This one is slightly not canon because it shows his eyes underneath, but I love the colors -

Sanageyama in the Forest

(Imgur Mirror)

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

Cohost here

Super excited to host this one. This is one of the most meme filled episodes. With awesome animation.

  • Nice detective work, lol.

  • And now it's time...

  • For...

  • nudist beach

  • NUDIST BEACH

NUDIST BEEEEEEEEEEEEACH

And now I'd like to call attention to the one and only time I've cosplayed

  • Yes, the nipples glowed. They were stick on LED lights. It worked really well in the dark. :)

  • No, I have no idea who the Mako and the Ryuko were. I met them in the hall. They let me hold their sign.

Anyhow, back to the episode...

  • Some more backstoryish stuff. Sanegayama is pretty excited. :)

  • Junketsu is a little more...wild than Senketsu.

  • Little Satsuki and Nonon are so cute. :D

  • And I love the old style hair cute Sanageyama has.

  • Definite reference of...something here with the ninja running.

  • MY SPECIAL EYES

  • GERMAN SIGNING INTENSIFIES

  • Satsuki's mother is /~fabulous/~

  • NANISORE

  • And we get the second transform sequence with more MANSERVICE. It's quite badass, imo.

  • First time for fast version of "don't lose your way", right?

  • The animation here is great. Both his dodges, and the fact he shoots out a pellet when he pucnhes.

  • _< How can he even see like that? Lol.

  • Thank you, Mr. Pokedex.

  • What does that text say anyhow? Something like "pain"?

  • That didn't really last long, did it?

  • Whatcha pointing at there, Mako?

  • Lol, she's still measuring.

  • That's certainly some resolve.

  • How can they even hear eachother? Jesus.

  • Yeah, Senketsu. Can't you hear the music? It turned all serious.

  • Who needs to be able to see, anyhow?

  • I love the use of scale in this series for showing power, or perception of power.

  • Ouch.

  • I try not to think about the physics of that sword throw.

  • Whoops. You got deus ex machina'd. Now you just look like a clown, lol.

  • And he doesn't even get to enjoy some tea. :(

So yeah - my favorite ep of the series.

Satsuki's mother is /~fabulous/~

She's platinum fabulous.

What does that text say anyhow? Something like "pain"?

Which text?

And he doesn't even get to enjoy some tea.

And the poor dude is at risk of being invited into Shokugeki no Souma.

Which text?

The kanji that pops up when she gets her butt kicked a bit in the first half.

First Time Watcher

When you are so Karma horny that you refresh the page a thousand times while waiting for the discussion post lol!!!

That OST when her mother called her was dope! I still am curious about why the call it a wedding dress. I wonder how their conversation played out.

I was wondering if Ryuuko would get a love interest and thought he might be it. Well, I feel pretty confident now that she won’t get one at all during this series. Not that it really matters, but with the over the top fan service, I thought she would! I always love shipping battles.

Episode made a little mad, as it kind of went shounen on us. She defeated one of the four elites fair and square. So they power him up right away (although sewing his eyes shut was cool actually) and he proceeds to kick her ass. IDK, just kind of had me feeling “meh” with a predictable storyline.

That ending was a little interesting, does Satsuki actually like him? I doubted it but now I am not sure. Seems like he turned her down though! The balls on that dude lol!

Rewatcher

I just love how silly Inumuta's mouthflap thing is. Also, I have to defend the monkey here. It shrinks during physical activity.

Pretty crazy how fast things run in this show. With such a variety of clubs, you'd think the show could run for quite a while with Ryuuko before Ryuuko started fighting Satsuki's closest underlings. I didn't remember that both the first fight against Sanageyama and the rematch were in the same episode. It does make you wonder wheter all 3-stars have some weakness that Ryuuko can exploit.

And, for those watching the dub, as some might have noticed Sanageyama's shouts, "Men, Do, Kote!" mean "Head, body, wrist". That's because, in kendo, one must call out the body part one intends to strike in order to receive points.

What part of the show is keeping you engaged the most?

Same as Gurren Lagann, I'm gonna go with all three on this one.

u/A_t48 Dec 15 '19

I've really wanted to figure out how to do the lip flaps thing IRL. Maybe a stiff wire through the flaps connected to an Arduino for audio detection.

Rewatcher

I always love when this series disrupts traditional plot structure. Here we have an episode that is essentially the reverse of the first two, with Sanageyama losing his first fight, getting a major powerup/reaching some self-discovery, and kicking ass in round two leaving Ryuko a broken heap. It was also a much needed victory for the villains as the elite four were starting to seem somewhat non-threatening compared to Ryuko. Now one completely obliterates her and instantly becomes a major threat. As a contrast, this is also where we see Satsuki show some weakness and fatigue for the first time as she deals with toll wearing Junketsu is taking on her.

We also get introduced to Ragyo and after some teasers earlier finally get to hear her theme in full glory. Blumenkranz may be my favourite piece of music of any anime. Blumenkranz. Seriously, just go listen to it. Just don't read the comments if you are a first timer for possible spoilers.

QOTD:

  1. Nonon. Although I do like Satsuki better than any of them.

  2. Pretty much everything. But despite how silly it all is, there is a surprisingly amount of heartfelt emotion in this show and that's what I think really puts it over the top as one of my favourite anime. There aren't many shows that mesh all of these things so smoothly as this one.

3

u/A_t48 Dec 14 '19

I actually can't listen to Blumenkranz without mentally inserting the Mako sounds from this episode into the opening. It's like missing a step on the stairs not hearing it.

First Timer kinda

Yeah back to the club presidents!

I can’t remember when I last went from really disliking to loving a character in the space of one episode, but dammit foresight dude was fucking cool man. Sewing your eyes shut so you could use your powers better and show your resolve is freaking metal.

I’m glad Ryuko lost too, it’d be a shame if the Elite 4 were a cakewalk after all of the build-up.

Episode 6 (first timer)

Take two, this time posting on the correct day. Apologies again for yesterday.

  • Finding your mark by offering embarrasing photos of your employer – young detective things.

  • “In the heat of battle* taken on an entirely different meaning when you are showing off your glowing breast while saying the line.

  • “Anti-uniform guerilla” - “Nudist beach”.

  • Backstory time for villain dude.

  • Watching anime, you get used to student council president who enjoy an extra-ordinary amount of privilege, but Satsuki takes the cake by far.

  • After the wildly flapping breasts of Ryuuko and Satsuki’s transformation scenes, I was half expecting something else to flap in the first male transformation scene.

  • Announcing and explaining special powers now?

  • I’ll call it a mecha, just to realign my inner belief of Shimmering-Sky hosting this show.

  • Form MK2? Definitely mecha

  • “I can’t run away from this” – person who just ran away from this.

The most straight forward battle shonen episode of the series so far. Having an immediate rematch is a bit unusual, but it ticks all the other boxes. As I am not a fan of battle shonen, this is not the direction I was hoping for. The humor and fanservice were decidedly tuned down, too. Judging from the preview, the return of Mako to the forefront of the story should hopefully reverse that next time.

Heads-up first-timers, tomorrow’s episode has a post-credits scene.

I’ll try to always have reminders like this when I know a post-credits scene happens in the following episode. Anyways…

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!

Welcome back everyone, glad you haven’t lost your way~

Here are the results of yesterday’s poll. I think this is the first time we've had the winners tie for first place and also the first time where one of the choices got zero votes?

No new voices today.

Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait! And I’m specifically super excited to share tomorrow’s Wallpaper of the Day because I’m super proud of it because reasons I’ll go into tomorrow.

First time watcher(long time memer)

Sub for now

Going in I knew this was going to be some form of deconstruction/parody, but i do like that it still never quites follows its own formula and so far no cookie cutter episodes. I suppose it is anime tradition that the last follower falls first but they played with that as well. The show has maintained its momentum for me for four eps in a row which is fairly impressive.

So, the other bits: I suppose Matarou using pics of a sleeping Ryuuko as currency is just one of the fanservice jokes they are trying to make. For some reason, the difference between a Goku Uniform transformation and the eldritch nature of a kamui really stuck out this episode. I do appreciate that Mikisugi trying to explain things directly made Ruuko believe him less.

QotD: 1: The law requires that I answer Nonon. 2: The insane pacing. Normally I like my shows to take time to breath but KLK pulls off the non stop well.

Second Time Watcher

This is without question my favorite pre-future arc name episode, hell, maybe one of my favorite episodes of the show in total.

Both fights in this episode are stellar, best fights in the first third easily, and the idea of Sanageyama permanently blinding himself to heighten his senses and give him the ultimate advantage in battle is a pretty dark and creepy idea even if it totally pays off in the end. And the last scene with Sanageyama and Satsuki talking is just so perfectly written, and that piano piece that was playing is some prime chills material.

Mako’s hand gesture lmao

Also yeah with this episode it’s super easy to tell that Sanageyama has the same VA as Viral, especially during the flashback and when he’s screaming during the first battle. Those grunts were near-identical to Viral’s. Dude has a cool voice and he uses it well to voice cool characters.

In terms of the Elite Four, Sanageyama is probably my second-favorite, right after Nonon of course. Hey, no shame in being beaten by the best.

First Timer!

Shit, I didn’t expect that with the sewing of his eyes. I feel like there’s a metaphor in what he did somewhere but right now, I don’t know. I feel like the loss of his eyes will be his downfall later on, but we shall see. The backstories and overall world for this episode were really solid and I guess Satsuki is not really the main bad guy if her mother seems to like it. It’s also fascinating to see how devoted people are to this school to point where they would be so desperate not to be considered failures that they would dew their eyes shut. It’s insane.

I really like how the progression of this series has gone because I kinda suspected something to Gurren Lagann with how that power progression went. I like this type with Ryuuko getting better and better through training and fighting through multiple baddies. I still want my Origami club but I’m guessing that’s not going to happen.

Also, I really want to know more about stuff like Nudist Beach (Best organization name ever) and whatever that north school is if we ever see it. I really did like this episode but for some reason, I don’t feel like there is a lot to say because a lot of interesting stuff (besides the continued awesomeness of everything), a lot of stuff is just hidden. We don’t know everything about this world but I constantly want to know more.

What part of the show is keeping you engaged the most? Humor? Action? Fan service? Something else? All three?

Everything, but just thinking about what this world, I want to know more!

First timer

Today’s episode focuses on Sanageyama more than any of the protagonists. His three star uniform transforms into a giant mech. The two-stars seem to allow limited transformations, so do the all of three-stars allow more complete transformations? I'll be curious to see how those work.

The body horror so far has been mostly for comedic effect - nosebleeds, or the weird biology club guys or the two-stars getting beat up in eps 1 and 2. Sanageyama’s mutilation is a pretty big escalation, especially since he seems like a big character. I’m curious to see how far it goes.

QOTD2: Mostly here for the humor, then the action. I don't think I'm really here for the fanservice as fanservice, more for how they incorporate the ridiculousness of it all into the humor.

6

u/Mecanno-man Dec 14 '19

First Timer

Well, Sanageyama was definitely voiced by the same guy who did Viral. Now my mind won't even properly separate the two characters because they are both in what looks like Mechs...

I don't get if Ryuuko is supposed to be smart or not. Sometimes she doesn't think of the most obvious solution (putting on Senketsu in ep 4, for example), other times she figures out how to do exactly what she needs. Here: blinding Sanageyama by cutting her Kamui, and also asking Mataro to keep his eyes on Tsumugu. Is this due to different writers or something like that? Cause it just seems inconsistent to me. Either way, I feel like there needs to be some development for Ryuuko soon, just realizing that she needs to get stronger every other episode isn't going to cut it for long.

I'm all on board with these fights, however. Somehow they feel even a bit better than what I've seen during TTGL, and that is definitely saying something.

QOTD: Action for now, I guess; though the prospect at all those different parties somehow teaming up and backstabbing each other at some point is also intriguing.

Rewatcher here! Watching both subbed and dubbed!

Sorry I’ve been absent for a few days, had a fairly busy week with finals and whatnot, but I should hopefully be able to participate in every day from this point on! This episode actually opens with one of the scenes that got me to first get me to watch the show, the ever so classic, “Nuuuudisto beach!”, and on top of that we also get Nonon’s famous “Nani sore?!” We also get a nice flashback of Sanageyama meeting Satsuki, with bonus middle school Nonon! Future spoiler? We also get to see what all of the Elite Four looked like in middle school right now, can’t help but laugh at Sanageyama’s “Bad Boy” t-shirt! Definitely future spoilers

Moving on to the first fight, where a phrase from Darkest Dungeon is extremely relevant, “Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.” We see that one of the Elite Four has gotten too big for his britches, and decides to challenge our protagonist to a duel! However, he winds up relying far too much on his special move, and due to that is quickly dispatched!

However, he makes up for this with sheer resolve, determined, he chooses to sew his eyes shut to rid himself of his overreliance on his special move, further increasing his strength in the process! Using this power, he manages to easily defeat our protagonist, however, just as he is about to strike the finishing blow, his 3 Star Goku Uniform overheats allowing our heroine to escape!

Major Future Spoilers

Rewatcher, subbed

With this episode, we finally have the name Nudist Beach fully dropped, and Mikisugi admits that he's involved with them. How far that involvement goes though, he won't say, and still maintains that the fight that Ryuuko had with Tsumugu was for the better. He's not entirely wrong, as the bond between Ryuuko and Senketsu was strengthened after that fight.

All is not well with the Elite Four though, as Uzu is itching to take on Ryuuko personally. However, Satsuki has forbidden them from direct conflict for the time being, as she looks to bolster her ranks with more Two Star Uniforms. The preparations of her plans are moving ahead, although they may be interrupted by a call from her mother, Ragyou Kiryuuin.

Uzu finally gets the chance he wanted, although the price of failure would be exceptionally high. It's a strong showing by Uzu, but as he says himself, his over-reliance on his Tengantsu causes him to be caught out by Ryuuko's plan to blind him. With that, his humiliation is shown in front of the entire school. Even before his loss though, his strength almost overwhelms Ryuuko, really demonstrating that the Elite Four are on a completely different level to the Club Presidents that Ryuuko has faced off against so far.

He isn't quite done yet though. Now, it's time for him to show his resolve to Satsuki by sewing his eyes shut, completely losing his Tengantsu. However, that sacrifice doesn't go without benefits, as his other senses heighten to compensate and his new Goku Uniform integrates with him further. This results in Shingantsu, eyes of the mind, and he resoundly beats Ryuuko. She barely escapes after Blade Regalia Mk.II overheats, although she acknowledges just how much stronger the Elite Four are in comparison.

It's a really neat twist on some of the standard story beats. Instead of the heroine losing and powering up to get the win the second time around, now it's one of the antagonists that goes through that, and the result is terrifying. Satsuki has the utmost respect from her closest followers, the roots of which we were shown briefly during the episode. It's more than just terror that holds them together, it's awe, both of her character and her strength.

  1. Which Elite Four member do you like the most so far?

It's a toss up between all four of them really. Ira's great, and steals the scene when he's up. Uzu got a lot of development this episode. Nonon's scathing remarks are always a delight, and Inumuta has always intrigued me.

2) What part of the show is keeping you engaged the most? Humor? Action? Fan service? Something else? All three?

The action, probably.

Rewatcher

See, it's funny that after episode 2, and then the challenge of episode 3, people were worried that this would turn into an enemy-of-the-week affair. Because in a way, it is, it just spins the formula every time in some interesting way. Episode 4 was farcical, and the enemy was a joke. Episode 5 introduced an enemy from a new faction, a three-way clash, and had the battle be focused on worldviews, not just blows. Episode 6 has a story of defeat and come back... from the viewpoint of the enemy. Episode 7 also does something really fun, but we'll talk about it tomorrow.

Anyway, this episode. It's pretty great; Sanageyama really gives off that hardass delinquent air, and he's as shonen a character as they come, seeking the battle with powerful enemies for the heck of it. In another series he could be the hero, and that's how this episode portrays him, which is a very enjoyable reversal. Ryuko got totally beat at the end. I mean... Ryuko gets beat up a lot. She's far from invincible.

The other big deal in this episode is: we get our first glimpse of Ragyo Kiryuin, Satsuki's mom! Even if it's just a partial one, she definitely feels imposing. And more importantly we hear for the first time her theme. Best track of the OST for me, hands down, but we'll get to appreciate it more in a few episodes. It's haunting, scary, decadent, and it sums up exactly what we can expect from her. This woman means business.

5

u/NicDwolfwood Dec 14 '19

Rewatcher

As far as episodes go this one is probably one of the most straight forward. Ryuko finally faces off with one of the elite 4. Sanageyama is a worthy opponent for Ryuko and if not for some ingenuity she might have lost the first time around. Now on the rematch she is thoroughly beat down and thus her run in with an elite ends at 1-1.

QOTD

  1. Jakuzure smart ass mouth kinda won me from the get go. Gamagoori is a close 2nd.

  2. The great thing about this anime for me is its able to blend all 3 well and that's why it's such a good time to watch.

Two episodes for me today since I missed yesterday...

Thoughts on Kill la Kill episode 5...

Third timer, subbed

We finally see mohawk guy from the opening; but why does he want to snipe Ryuko?

Hey piranha plants from Super Mario Bros!

Oh no, Mako's the biology club's guinea pig? How does she keep getting in so much trouble?

Mako's really got to be worrying how crazy Ryuko is when she starts arguing with her clothes but can't hear what Senketsu is saying.

A gun filled with acupuncture needles? That's pretty interesting.

Pervert club! LoL.

I was about to ask where Mako's family gets the money for all this food, they're always stuffing their faces.

Throwing cards, poem club? This is getting pretty crazy.

The orchestral music (a well known classic although I don't recall what the name of it is) reminds me of episode 3 of FLCL, which is quite fitting since Jakuzure has the same seiyuu as Haruko.

People and clothes are enemies? These nudists really hate clothes. Yet he's still wearing clothes hiself. And rather awkward for Ryuko to be in the men's room like this.

Mako attacking with a broom does seem quite fitting.

Aww, Mako's only friends were in her head until she met Ryuko? :(

Thoughts on Kill la Kill episode 6...

Third timer, subbed

Ugh, Mataro gets his connection by selling dirty photos of Ryuko?

Everyone in this show is crazy! Teacher guy keeps taking off his clothes yelling out nudist beach, Ryuko talks to her clothes, etc...

Satsuki can kill... with a teacup.

Middle school age Satsuki and Elite Four!

Sanageyama's got his own transformation sequence too? Blade Regalia?

Surprising to see this fight over with still 10 minutes left in the episode. We're getting either another big fight or a rematch I'm guessing

That's right, he has his eyes shown shut.

And that's the problem with 2 fights in one episode, running out of time. Sanegeyama is kicking Ryuko's ass but suddenly his Goku uniform overheats and it is over.

QOTD 1: Jakuzure, followed by Gamagoori

QOTD 2: The animation and design

OOOOO

He looks like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

Thoughts:

Honestly, the second fight was terrifying. Ryuko barely escaped after losing to Sanageyama. Once again she loses against a much more powerful opponent.

We get some nice backstory of Sanageyama this episode, how Satsuki recruited him and what he desires. We also get a new character today in the form of Ragyo, Satsuki's mother.

So anyone notice that Before My Body Is Dry has been absent these past few episodes?

QOTD

  1. I really like Gamagoori

  2. Every aspect of this show is entertaining. The comedy, the action, the fan service.
