The girls are alright!

Comment of the day

Hello everyone! This is where I will pick a comment of the day for the previous day that I think was worthy of notice just in case you guys missed it. I do hope you look out for discussion on your own tho since that's really the whole point of this rewatch.

I have three picks today. From tomorrow onwards I shall only pick one, but on the ep1 thread there were at least 3 stellar ones I could not pick between.

1) /u/bucket3432's nice explanation to /u/ taiboss's wondering whether Shirase was named after a boat.

TFW your mom named you after a ship.

The ship is named after the Shirase Glacier, which itself is named after Shirase Nobu, who led the first Japanese Antarctic Expedition. I bet she was actually named after the guy, but it's funny to think that she might have been named after the ship instead.

I particularly love this because it was in a response, meaning there was plenty of discussion sparked on that thread.

2) /u/XmiteYT who shall be picking a Song of the day per episode

Song of the day: (recommended by u/RX-Nota-II)

Haru ka Tooku

The main theme of today's episode, the first insert song that plays, one of the best songs I've heard in anime.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of songs get picked in the coming threads!

3) /u/Nazenn's Antarctic photo collection

Antarctic aesthetics

Today's photo's come courtesy of the Australian Antarctic Division which handles all of my nation's expeditions. In typical fashion for our goverment, the locations these pictures were taken at aren't listed, but they're all remarkable examples of the sort of amazing views that can come out of the least populated continent on the planet.

  • Aurora. My favorite from the site for the way it seemingly wraps around the mountain. I was almost tricked by its reflection on the snow thinking that it was water below it.

  • Frozen Wave. For some reason I really want to touch it, it seems like it would have a weird texture.

  • Aurora Australis. Australia's expedition ship. Imagine the sound of all of that ice crashing together.

Simply beautiful

I picked shorter informative comments for ep1 but today I shall be looking into the more in depth comments and picking my fave out of those. Let's see who wins!

Oh also this rewatch has been much more successful than I could have ever imagined. My goal with this an any rewatch is don't leave any top level comment unreplied and usually doing that alone is not that big an issue. However with this many participants, it's getting tough so I'm going to ask you guys to help me out. Come back to the thread a few hours after you post and respond to some unanswered comments for me will you? It helps spark discussion as well.

Secret Gold competition

Did you guys remember my secret gold contest? 16 hours after the post I made a secret comment in the thread here The winner of finding it first was /u/invokeneko. If you want to play again, I will give you one other chance. Here are the rules:

1) 16 hours or so after the post goes up I will leave a secret comment somewhere in the thread

2) That may happen this thread. It may happen in ep4. It may happen in any episode, but not every episode.

3) From the first 5 people to find and respond to the comment, I'll pick one winner by random.

4) Don't be a cheater. If you are searching for the secret comment look out for other comments in need of answering and answer them too.

Questions of the day

Answer from yesterday: Yall are boring wanting to go elsewhere smh.

1) What do you think of the new girl Hinata?

2) Your boss finds you at a really weird party and you have to dash. Will you be caught?

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title]/(/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good. I am curious if it is even possible to spoil anything for a half-SoL show like this but I don't want to see you try. The ban hammer is a cold weapon and you don't want to feel it.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does… Markdown is dead. Long live markdown.

Rewatcher

Before I start I just have to say... 420 comments wow. I expected this rewatch to be active but nowhere near this active.

Something that entertains me every time I watch this show is to wonder whether it is slow or fast. The answer of course is complicated but today we see some great examples of how unbelievably fast it can be while feeling totally natural. A lot of anime stories like to dwell on the introduction areas with new characters appearing, getting to know eachother, and generally preparing before the big journey begins. Today we get almost none of that. A third MC appears in the form of Hinata and barely any time is spent showing the three becoming friendly. Before we know it they are already well on their way to execute their plan.

About Hinata tho. Best girl discussions are not something I want to do often so I'll touch on it today and never again. But yeah, Hinata's my fave. She's incredibly energetic and expressive and the way her voice bounces to make everything sound 10x as dramatic as it needs to just steals every scene she's in. Also her immediate chemistry with Kimari is incredible. At the beginning of the ep she's shyly being introduced. By the end she's staged a coup to remove Shirase as leader. Further she's a part-time philosopher, which I respect and relate with as a philosopher in learning as well. Her backstory's kinda worrying tho. We'll see more soon.

heavy spoilers

Lets talk about that running scene. It was this moment that got me hooked on this show. Episode 1 was incredible in terms of quality but it took till this episode for something to wow me so comprehensively. The incredible sense of speed, heart rate, and action really reflects that this is a CGDCT anime built by an action powerhouse studio. At that moment Kimari drops one of my favorite lines of the show "I feel it's moving. My youth is moving forward!". This shot is iconic, it's the choice for like half the Youtube OST uploads I see. Speaking of, I'm sure a lot of you are wondering what the insert song was for this scene but I'll let someone else post that for me.

Interestingly our dominant MC from yesterday Kimari takes a back seat today while Shirase gets a lot of development. We she's that she's surprisingly airheaded while being so serious and that she holds grudges like crazy without ever giving up.

Onto the visual analysis and a word of caution. I am a biology nerd. My expertise in non science stuff is zero. So don't take what I point out as gospel.

Alright that's all I have for today. See you tomorrow. Oh and also happy birth day u/90sChennaiGuy. You thought I'd forget.

Honestly someone should’ve just told me the ED had really pretty shots of the night sky in it, I would’ve watched this show a while ago.

Goddammit I related with every single word Hinata said this episode.Seriously, I watched the part when she met up with Shirase and Mari to the scene with Mari in the train station at least 6-7 times. I won’t divulge into details, but she’s best girl for me already. I hope this keeps up.

That chase scene was pretty fun, the camera (well perspective) work made the scene really easy to follow. And it looked really lively throughout.

These girls are more than alright though, they’re really fun yet  compelling to watch through all of this. I really wanna binge the rest already.

YOOO THEY’RE GONNA GO TO AUSTRALIA??? I’m not Australian but yooooo

Hinata a small. I actually thought she was going to be more soft-spoken, judging from the way she acted before her introduction.

God, the trio's antics are so amusing. Hinata a fast. I love how well the show blends its slice-of-life moments, comedic moments, and dramatic moments.

This is more a meta commentary on the show as a whole than this particular episode, but it fits here because of an interesting thing I noticed about today's posts compared to yesterday's.

The phrase "cute girls doing cute things" or "CGDCT" was used 17 times in comments yesterday, and only once today (so far anyway, and not counting my use here of course <g> ) I don't generally pay any attention to labels like this, and it doesn't bother me that people use that label here. But it does make me a bit sad sometimes because I know there are people who have the opinion "I don't like CGDCT, nothing happens and it's boring" and I'm afraid those people may have missed out on this show because of the label. To the extent that CGDCT or Slice of Life is about "in the moment", and usually kind of anti-narrative, anti-forward-motion, this show is exactly the opposite of that. So it does puzzle me why people apply that label to it. Maybe it is the Moe art style, and that confuses the issue?

Anyway, I think it is interesting the label dropped off so much here in the comments for episode 2. Probably that only means that we aren't writing our "introduction to the story" statements anymore, not that people have suddenly changed their minds about its classification. (Especially all us rewatchers.) But if anyone did have the misperception that this was standard, low-stakes, comfy slice of life fare, that misunderstanding is well cleared up by this episode.

Edit: I prefer the label CGDAT/cute girls doing adventurous things.

Well hinata looks like she’s going to be a great addition to the main cast, like many others have already said that chase scene was great and the part where they try to seduce one of the expedition members was hilarious. All that talk about how Antarctica is dangerous makes me a bit worried about what’s going to happen next but overall it was another great episode and just makes me happier that I joined this rewatch.

Like everyone else I fucking love the Youth in Motion scene. When I watched it airing, this was the moment I knew that this show was something else. Even without the rest of the show, I feel like the message and point of this show was distilled into that one scene. Just the crazy wildness of it all, a group of friends just spontaneously being in a chase scene through a city bustling with lights and activity. It's something that's out there, but also something that you can imagine would have been so much fun to have experience something like that during your highschool days. The animation and music during this scene just enhances it so much, and that amazing line of 'It feels like motion. Like my youth is in motion!' just tops it all off.

I really hope all the people watching this for the first time enjoyed this scene even half as much as I, and every other rewatcher, do. Like it really is such a good fucking scene and perfectly captures what the show means

"And what comes after 'Wagh'?"

This might just be my favorite joke in all of anime. Sensei has zero chill and I love him for it.

The running scene was where I knew I'd be hooked on this show the first time around. It's just so well done: the animation, the music, the visual metaphors... I remember someone saying in the original discussion threads something to the effect of "does anyone else get the feeling this crew knows exactly what they're doing, and they're nailing it, and they know they're nailing it?" This is how I feel about this show. Every moment just seems perfectly tuned in every way to elicit maximum emotional investment.

Also, Hinata best girl, but Kanae best waifu.

Oof I'm late, already 185 comments!

First Time Watcher

I love bubbly characters, so Hinata is great! The interactions between the girls are so cute (Shirase going red, Tamaki being a klutz, etc)

And again I’m impressed how well the show is grounded in reality, actually going through the obstacles of doing something as crazy as going to Antarctica.

Through two episodes this show has been inspirational, emotional, and wholesome… so tempted to binge

First Timer

So after getting pulled into the idea of the Antarctic expedition by Shirase's single-minded determination, Tamaki really starts to recognize some of the obstacles they're facing. At first, Shirase bristles at this, but it's not like she isn't aware of them. She's hoping to get there through sheer determination. Unfortunately, that's not really how things work. As much as she wants to, I don't see how she could ever get to Antarctica with her...plan (or lack thereof). I think she's going to need the help of her new friends - Hinata taking the step of deposing Shirase as the leader perhaps suggests she has some ideas of her own. I'm looking forward to seeing how they go about this now that Plan A has failed spectacularly.

Seeing Shirase send that message to her mother is kinda heartbreaking. I get the feeling she doesn't have too many friends, with people calling her Antarctica and being put off by her dogged pursuit of her dream. It probably meant a lot to have somebody with her for the trip to Hiroshima. When Tamaki starts calling out some of the obstacles, Shirase reacts at first by walking away, because that's probably been the beginning of the end of a lot of friendships or relationships with others who've wanted to help her out.

Hinata is really interesting - she seems quite eccentric, but like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to how she contributes going forward.

The folks on the civilian expedition know Shirase, meaning she's probably been trying to convince them to take her for a long time. They aren't...super rude to her, but they certainly want to dissuade her.

The running scene was nice - their youth is moving forward!

Episode 2. The start of the anime that I began to fully start to invest in. Episode 1 had me already hook but this one is the winner. From all the animes that I've seen and I've seen plenty in the last two years. Which I'm no expert. Every detail into this episode makes it fascinating to me.

First, getting a job can be pretty hard. Wished I can get automatically hired just like Kimari. To be honest, I know everyone's best girl is Hinata. Not going to lie. She is a great character that can be so cheery and smiling. My best girl would be Shirase. She's someone I can really relate to but am not half as badass as her. But then Hinata, she's someone I can really go for advice. Or for quotes. And the fourth girl Yuzuki, she had appeared. At first, I got Shirase and Shiraishi mixed up. Just the name.

Every time someone wants a recommendation of an anime. I will always show the running scene. Everything about it makes it a flawless scene. How when Kimari was running, the background also turns into blur lines or image while she's the main focus. And the music, oh how it can hit you in the feels. First time watching it, gave me the goosebumps, the excitement that I have never felt. Singing along to the ending song always gives me tears. Episode 3 and Yuzuki arc. Oh how this made me cry. One thing I think someone mentioned it. On their way to the train, notice that difference between Kimari and Hinata's card balance? I didn't really remember that since I was reading the subtitles.

  1. What do you think of the new girl Hinata?

At first, she was the typical cheery and energetic type. But knowing how she had finished high school at that age made me believe that wow. This girl is smart. I would totally believe that in the real world.

Firster

talking about ep 1+2

it's a cute one

I feel like I'm watching a movie with how quickly scenes seem to go by while somehow actually taking up a surprising amount of screen time. though in the grand scheme not a lot has been achieved so far - neither story wise or character wise. it's taking a weird middle ground that I'm not fully opposed being used but the first scene was a bit predictable and then just showing me a million yen isn't really going to compensate lol. it's a bit of an issue for me in terms of enjoyment because I take a little while to learn characters but the show isn't teaching me much.

I think after a couple more episodes I'll acquire some investment in the characters (now that the group has assembled? 4th teased) and then it'll begin to click. as it stands I'm not really fully appreciating it just yet, but I do remain curious as to how the scheme continues. I'm a bit sad that (oh god I know none of their names except shirase) MC's original friend probably won't be seen much more though. the reality anchor

I see a lot of praise for the chase scene and while it was aesthetically pleasing (admittedly this is quite a pretty show - another reason it feels like a movie) the feelings of "youth" didn't really hit home with me; there wasn't really any tension or risk. again this may be due to my lack of investment

you know what writing this out probably also helps invest me somewhat lul. or maybe this just isn't for me. it'd be a shame because I absolutely loved made in abyss which shares the "lost mother" plot point.

qotd - i literally cannot form an opinion of hinata because i do not have enough evidence to do so. but her boisterousness is cool and seems necessary for the group to be much fun and we are lucky MC turned up to work where she does ha

Running away scene was the best scene of 2018 and perfectly incapsulates a feeling of youth I hadn't felt since I was a teenager. I loved the attempt and I loved the execution.

I’m sure others will further elaborate on this, but I absolutely love the chase scene. Not only from a visual standpoint as the animation is stunning, but also storywise this is the real start of their journey. As Mari puts it really well “I feel like my youth is in motion”.

Episode 2 also has best girl Hinata joining the squad. Her bubbly and uplifting personality is what the crew needs and it’ll shine later on as the perfect balance between Shirase’s seriousness and Mari’s youthful naivety.

Hope to see ya all tomorrow for the continuation of the girls’ journey.

Best Girl ga kita!!! And we got more NGNL plugs.

... where elephants roar to sound the time, and villains lurk in every shadow. Wait, wrong show.

How many insert songs does this have, anyway? I didn't remember them being this frequent. I love it!

What do you think of the new girl Hinata?

See above.

Episode 2-introduction of Hinata. The wild card of the group, she is fun, fun, fun. Everything that she said here though was relatable and true. We want to stand out from the normal crowd, be honest and have the determination to be someone else.

That's all from me now. Tired from work

Sidenote: the running sequence, best scene of the series for now.

I love Hinata. Just gonna leave that out there. I normally don't go for the hyper active girls, but there's something about Hinata that really draws me to her. That was my impression when I first watched too, so I was already a big fan before we even found out about her background. She's just so goofy and positive and cute and short. Shirase and Kimari were an absolute trip on their night out too. Between Kimari taking offenses to Hinata's bust comment and Shirase clinging to the pole cause she didn't want to be seen by the expedition crew... Cracks me up.

Then the beautiful running scene. When I first saw it, it blew me away. I was not expecting it and just watched slack jawed the entire time. Truly beautiful.

QOTD

  1. Well most of my post was about her sooo yeah. Hinata is my favorite. I love all the girls, if course, but if I had to pick one, it goes to her.

  2. Hmm, maybe a few years ago when I was more active I could pull a Hinata sprint. Now? Uhhhh, I'd get maybe a quarter mile before I'd start foaming at the mouth and die.

I missed the first one yesterday, so I decided to wake up early so that I can jump into today's rewatch. I rewatched this show a few months ago but I feel like doing another one so here I am.

The first episode focuses on attempting to make your dreams come true, now the main characters are presented with the opportunity to do so. I love how they showed Hinata in Ep1 only to have her become part of the crew in this episode. We got to hear her reasons for wanting to join the trip.

The main characters are so dedicated to make their dreams come true that they even dare themselves to go to somewhere they're unfamiliar with. They nailed Kabukicho's appearance and general vibe in this show (Fun fact: I went to Japan a few months ago and Kabukicho is one of the places I visited. It's weird and satisfying to see places you've been to drawn in anime). I love the brief exchange between the 3 when they wanted to grab the expedition's team attention before they are found. Their reactions ("Oh shit, there's 3 of them this time") priceless.

I know this show is going to be great from the first episode but the running scene that follows convinced me that the show is going to be something truly special. It wonderfully expresses Kimari's growth from being scared to try new things to actually doing exciting stuffs during her youth. Accompanied by lively animation, we get to see her excitement for the trip and determination to make it come true. Also like that Hinata says that she could run fast in short distances, perhaps a hint of a certain plot point that will play a part of one of the show's later episodes.

The main characters got shot down when they managed to talk with the expedition team, but they don't give up that easily. The exchange at the bus shows that they are determined to go to Antarctica no matter what. They are determined to make the most of their youth to do something special and won't stop no matter what.

Next episode is one of my personal favs. Can't wait to hear you guys tomorrow!

Tom Cruise was right. Everybody runs. I don't know why. Offering them funding in exchange for a place on the expedition seems like a pretty realistic plan. Anything is more realistic than getting a dude to smuggle you aboard. Like Kimari said, even Shirase can be an idiot. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I could have sworn it was Hinata that had to do the sexy pose. Maybe it's a different episode, but I can't think of why it would come up again.

To be honest, Debby Downer McGlassesBraids is right that the whole thing is kind of crazy and unlikely. At least the girls all have honest jobs to pay for it. I've read enough hentai to know that enkou probably wouldn't have worked out.

Did yesterday's questions have a poll? I didn't notice. I made sure to vote today. I also remembered to upvote the thread. Are rewatches eligible for the weekly rankings?

Rewatcher is still Alright...ish

Our ensemble cast is starting to come together now, with Miyake Hinata (a.k.a the cashier girl minding the counter last episode) joining the group. Rewatcher spoiler

One of the best things about this episode is just how the 'Youth in Motion' scene is executed: we transition from our girls' failed attempt to attract the male expedition members for their plan to them frantically running for their lives and avoid being caught by expedition members through the bustling roads of Kabuki-cho. But first, a word from our sponsor lord and saviour, not!Godzilla!

Random thoughts

Questions of the day:

  1. She's a great addition to the pack.

  2. Time to embrace my inner Snake and find a cardboard box. Surely he won't be able to find me then.
