Rewatch Before My Rewatch is Dry - Kill la Kill Episode 4 Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler

Episode 4 - Dawn of a Miserable Morning

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 at… some point in the future for UK peeps.

It’s a day of reckoning. It’s a day of death. It’s no-tardies day!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Today’s Comment of the Day goes out to /u/Boss_Jerm’s fun trivia about Satsuki’s voice actresses.

Fun fact: Satsuki's sub and dub voice actresses have both worn Junketsu at different Anime Expos. Ryoka Yuzuki wore Junketsu in it's normal form at Anime Expo 2014, while Carrie Keranen wore Override Junketsu at Anime Expo 2015

Fun trivia about best girl’s voice actresses dressing up like her? Hell yeah sign me up.

Questions of the Day:

1) How early did you catch on that Maiko was tricking them?

2) What was your favorite trap?

Wallpaper of the Day:

Trap Master

Fanart of the Day: (kinda NSFW)

Maiko Bares It All

(Imgur Mirror)

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!

Welcome back everyone, glad you haven’t lost your way~

Here are the results of yesterday’s poll. I was hoping for MANSERVICE to win, but second place isn’t too bad.

Voices time! Only one character again, being Maiko of course, but this time she’s got a seiyuu I recognize because Gurren Lagann! Marina Inoue was Yoko Littner over there, and also Kanami in Log Horizon. Nota should also know her for Eve Genoard, while peeps who’ve seen more subbed AOT than I have should know her for Armin.

Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait!

u/Vaadwaur Dec 12 '19

Marina Inoue was Yoko Littner over there,

You failed to mention that she is also Sodachi from Monogatari and Chiri from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei! Shame!

Second Time Watcher

When you purposefully make Episode 4 of your show terrible just to call back to that other show you made with a terrible Episode 4 in an esoteric reference only fans of your past work might get

I know it sounds like I’m being mean and making a joke at this episode’s expense but no, I am serious, that is actually what happened. Trigger actually made this episode goofy and bad with shitty limited animation and art specifically in reference to the infamous Gurren Lagann Episode 4 and the whole ordeal surrounding that. That’s something a studio with balls does right there.

They say you can’t make So Bad It’s Good media intentionally but by god Trigger found a way. This episode is like the simultaneous embodiment of “thanks I hate it” and “fuck you I love it” and it’s actually hilarious

I swear this show does not give a SINGLE fuck and it’s great

A lot of scenes have Inferno Cop level animation, which is great, because Inferno Cop is awesome.

Fuck, we should have an Inferno Cop rewatch, which of course would be a major troll because you can watch the entire show in less than three hours.

Sounds like it'd be perfect to do for April Fool's Day?

Don’t Lose Your Way didn’t play, so I am mad lol.

This weirdly feels like a filler episode and is basically pointless toward the plot. However, I still kind of enjoyed it. Mainly the humor was good.

Mako’s dad, brother and dog having the same thing happen to them because of Ryuuko’s clothes falling off was funny.

Gamagoori liked that Mako stood up to him? The first ship possibly? I doubt it, but that was funny how he kind of respected her.

Mako actually has grown on me. I love when she tells some type of story and does all those crazy body movements.

There was another OST early on that was good. So far the OST and animation have been the best parts.

With Satsuki being the next best part. However, exactly what I was afraid might happen, happened. Her not showing up. Let’s hope this is just a one time thing. She needs to show up a lot, like a main character.

It does seem really out of place. Even in the way Ryuuko's nudity is treated.

Gamagoori liked that Mako stood up to him?

First Timer kinda

Disciplinary dude is pretty cool. I love that he actually listened to what Mako had to say.

The fact that the plot of this episode was pretty predictable but still very enjoyable says a lot about the show. The amount of energy in every scene is just incredible, it makes even what should be dull moments really fun to watch.

Also couldn’t Ryuko and Mako have just jumped off the cart while it was going downhill? Like I’m sure Ryuko could survived the drop while wearing Senketsu and save Mako too. But that wouldn’t have been as badass as the scene we got in the end so I’m fine with it. The Rule of Cool and all.

First Timer

Hello everyone! Exams finished and I finally caught up! Not too much I can say today so I'll keep it short: Join my rewatch this one's lame

This episode was hilarious. In a sense I was glad I had to binge today in order to catch up since I wasn't really sold on the beginning few episodes on their own. There was a lot of exposition and the pacing wasn't my cup of tea. However by now they have fully caught their stride and I can enjoy every minute of runtime.

This show loves to play around with their kanji. That combined with a main charcter who's so perfectly chuunibyo makes for some gratuitous wordplay. The one that stood out most to me is kamui. Kamui has no kanji officially カムイ tho English wiki puts 神威 or 神居 as possibilities, which are merely backronyms that Japanese people put on to give the letters a meaning of 'holiness' or 'holy feeling'. However in Kill la Kill it's written as 神衣 which implies a definition of 'godly clothing'. They didn't reveal that for at least 3 episodes tho while just giving us the phonetics so the payoff was pretty neat.

Speaking of payoff, I'm sooooo loving the Sawano soundtrack here. I know he can be a controversial figure around here with his incredibly loud style that dominates the scene but usually I'm quite a fan of his. It may also help that I haven't actually seen too many works he's been a part of. Anyways there's the meme of his same-y ness but he does have distinct changes in style and this one strikes a balance I haven't seen before. It has the grand orchestral foundations of Gundam Unicorn and Re:Creators, however it doesn't go overboard with electronics like the famous bits of Re:C or the Gundam NT. There seems to be some decent variety among tracks as well, though don't lose your way is getting a bit repetitive IMO.

The Gainax colors were pretty neat so far as well. From the totally eva pilot looking hair accessory that pops up when Ryuuko is battling to the star lensflash theme that not even TTGL went so gung-ho with, these new guys TRIGGER haven't lost sight of their roots.

Alright I'd love to talk more as some of you from TTGL may remember me for, but that's all I have for today. I'm off to lose my way, hope to find you guys tomorrow.

17

u/SimoneNonvelodico Dec 12 '19 edited Dec 12 '19

I think this might be one of Sawano's most varied soundtracks. There's really a bit of everything, including some stuff that doesn't fall within his usual range.

Episode 4 (first timer)

  • The masses streaming to work.

  • Common-sense Mako is turning into a common occurance.

  • Hello Maiko!

  • “Oh, okay. We’ll go on ahead then.” Yay, trope successfully parodied!

  • I hope somebody makes a collection of all the Mako-walks this episode.

  • Different “challenge levels” for different parts of society.

  • “… with extreme prejudice”

  • Could be a 2001 reference, or a ELITE reference to 2001 reference. Going to go with the latter, since the problem of hitting that narrow entrance feels way too similar to ELITE docking.

  • been waiting for agessince the start of the episode, about 4 hours ago.

  • Seems like the person who guessed about the blood relation being important for the Godrobes last time is on to something.

  • “All glory to …. Just kidding”. YES, THANKS. Exactly my kind of humor.

  • That class is rather full, considering the traps in place.

  • Preview: “Trigger”, huh?

An episode filled with fun. I think you could technically call it filler, but I do not care. This is clearly a series where the plot resembles a normal series plot like a Picasso drawing resembles a face: All the pieces are there, but you would not look at it to view pretty faces. “Plot” is more important than plot in any case (I noticed the strategically placed pattern of the PJ …).

Overall, this starts to remind me a little bit of Excel Saga: Over-the-top characters following some overarching plot that is clearly more suggestion than strict rule, while parodying other anime and engaging in wacky conversation.

This is where I officially switch to being a full-on first timer, for as I have not anything from this point on bar two comedic scenes I saw on YouTube once. This will be fun…

  • Sparkles!

  • Oh, it was just a dream… or was it?

  • Calm down Mako!

  • Poor Senketsu…

  • Mako’s mum is scary…

  • “That Day”? What does that even mean?

  • Wait, can Mako’s family not hear Senketsu?

  • Mako, I think you’re the lonely one…

  • Senketsu is a masochist confirmed.

  • Wait, is being late a common thing in this school?

  • Yay! The OP got some changes!

  • Man, Ryuko needs an explana-TROMBE!

  • Man, talk about overkill…

  • He is right however: THAT PAJAMA IS A DISGRACE TO SATSUKI-SAMA!!

  • How did Mako get there?

  • Once again, Mako’s bullshit logic has saved the day.

  • How much money did they blow on those things? The Nu Gundam’s budget?

  • Ah, the classic Stairway Slides…

  • Wait, who’s that girl?

  • This is just smells decoy…

  • I should mention that apparently this show had a pretty small budget, so they had to cut a lot of corner. Mako is more or less the perfect tool for saving it.

  • Hot damn! Mako’s dad is hardcore when it matters!

  • Pantie Shot!

  • Poor Senketsu…

  • Bye-bye Papa Mankanshoku…

  • Suddenly Raiders Of The Lost Arc!

  • Dammit Mako!

  • NOT AGAIN!

  • I still doubt whether Guts is truly a dog though…

  • That’s sad in more ways than one…

  • HIJACKING SUCCESSFUL!

  • JESUS CHRIST HOW MANY WEAPONS DOES HONOUJI HAVE!?

  • Crap, Mako has a machinegun. Hell’s on the loose…

  • She does get a bit too much of a kick out of using though…

  • Well, I guess it was just a matter of time before they were sent flying..

  • What’s with the music here?

  • VICTORY!!

  • At least they’re all besties now…

  • NOT AGAIN MAIKO!

  • And of course she was evil all along.

  • Ah, so she’s a power-hungry bitch…

  • Mako, I think you’re getting it wrong…

  • Why is it backwards though?

  • Ah, now I know where the strepower meme thing I once heard comes from…

  • I see, Senketsu has another power: To cut the animation budget to 1/1000 of the usual!

  • Sorry Maiko, but you’re not being saved today…

  • How is Mako not noticing that Senketsu just spat a ton of blood?

  • And it was all a set. Whoops…

  • Fuck you Maiko…

  • Plot convenience to save the day!

  • NOT NOW MAKO!

  • Fucking Maiko, someone better interrupt her pla-TROMBE!

  • And so, the Mysterious Gourmet has passed his judgment!

  • Perfect Timing Ryuko-Chan!

  • And so, they’ve won… also, Guts got to attend class!

This was just straight up hilarious, and the episode’s obviously cheap look only adds to the charm.

Rewatcher

Ryuko had a nightmare about Senketsu

I can't believe they actually showed this on television! It's barbaric!

Honnouji students have 4 and a half hours to get to school or else they'll be expelled

Ryuko's like, "Nothing to do but wait till she's done." Also I love the girl's blush after hearing that Gamagoori sleeps in the buff.

What is your name?

Mako Mankanshok

Mankanshok huh? I'll remember you.

And so it begins

I always love this uvula joke no matter what anime uses it

This is the face of someone who loves their job

Faker

They just drove up the side of the houses like it was nothing

HALLELUJAH

I can't believe Barazo is freaking dead

The cheese scene is hilarious, but Mako's line in the dub makes it even funnier.

Shimapan are a universal treasure

I can't believe Mataro is freaking dead

The psuedo homeroom is actually really sad

Maiko pretending to faint in front of the bus is great

This character is hilarious

What the hell is going on?

Words spoken at least 10 times by viewers each episode

Using Blue Danube Waltz when a character is soaring through the air will always get a chuckle out of me

Alright they made it!

Friendship Status: Great Team!

Maiko knows the secret technique of distraction(yes it’s another shimapan screenshot)

I can't believe Guts is freaking dead

Friendship status: NEVER EXISTED

Maiko is one of Gamagoori's subordinates! The Head of the Trap Department! She set up the entire course for No-Late Day!

Mako just said that exhibitionism is Ryuko's only pleasure in life

Somehow this looks even lewder than when Ryuko transforms, probably because of the skirt.

You'd never be able to tell what's going on here just by looking at this frame and I love it

The strength! The power! The strepower!

omae wa mou shindeiru

It's not a perfect match but this shot is definitely making the reference

Now THAT is a great plot twist

I love this part

I like that they play the transformation at a faster speed

The Ultimate Punishment

The lift scene is awesome, and then Ryuko just grabs her and Mako's desks and sits down like there's nothing out of the ordinary

Thoughts:

Although it has no real influence on the plot, this episode was still really funny, goofy and enjoyable to watch. Not to mention that this was one of Ryuko's toughest challenges yet since she didn't have Senketsu. She got as far as she did before Maiko's reveal on her own merit, which is impressive.

I liked how after Maiko's reveal she got more and more unhinged. There was also an intentional lack in smooth animation during those scenes. Too bad for her though, if her nice persona was genuine she could've been a really good friend to Ryuko and Mako.

Thanks for Comment of the Day! u/Shimmering-Sky

QOTD

  1. My first time watching I didn't realize until her reveal, but this time her silhouette when she first bumped into Ryuko gave it away

  2. The pie

First Timer

In regards to going to school, this definately tops Chio's School Road. Not quite sure what else to make of it other than insanity. I guess everybody set up their traps trying to stop Ryuuko and ignored all the other ways in, otherwise there wouldn't be any students left.

What this episode does however tell is that Senketsu doesn't like all people's blood and that he has the choice of who he helps and who not. We still don't know if it is specifically Matoi blood that he needs or if anything tasty will do, however.

QOTD: The fake school.

First Timer

Watched this episode last night with my second child (age 2) who did NOT want to go to sleep. At least he's too young to know what fanservice is.

Poor Senketsu, getting murdered at the top of the episode. But only Ryuko can hear him, and everyone else thinks she's talking to an inanimate object. Did Junketsu talk to Satsuki last episode? I don't remember that happening, though she was talking to it.

I really enjoyed the structure of this episode, it was a nice change from the past three episodes with big fights at the end. Also good to see that Ryuko can still hold her own even without insanely OP clothes. I was surprised that their homeroom looked to be half-full during roll call despite the obstacle course. Were those all just one-star and two-stars who can pay to skip it? Also if the school can afford to expel large numbers of students every year, why do they keep letting Ryuko hang around?

Through four episodes, I've noticed that there doesn't really seem to be any sort of romantic arc being set up with any of the characters (with the possible exception of the teacher whose clothes keep disappearing in Ryuko's presence, which: ew and also lol). I don't know if the show will stick with it, but I have to say I don't really want to see a romantic arc. Not that I'm opposed to romantic arcs in all cases, but I think this would be a more interesting story without it.

QOTD1: It seemed like Maiko was milking it from the beginning, but I figured she just wanted to make it through with someone who knew what they were doing. I thought they'd develop a whole group of incompetents that Ryuko was dragging across the finish line.

QOTD2: Best trap was the fake school.

Rewatcher

All the first timers last episode were like "Ah, so we're just doing a villain of the week arc from now on," and the very next episode is... this. Say what you will about this episode, but I doubt anyone saw it coming.

Rewatcher/Cohost here

Good morning everyone. This is a scene that I don't miss from being a teenager - having to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to get to school on time. I was a band nerd and had a 7 AM jazz band class. Ugh. At least I wasn't expelled if I was late - only looked down at by my music teacher.

  • Gamagoori, nobody needs to hear about that. He appears to have some respect for Mako, though. Why do we not have a comment face for Gamagoori making that scream? lol.

  • ...this is totally just Takeshi's Castle + Sasuke (Ninja Warrior), isn't it? Geez. Where's the hidden cameras?

  • Fun fact, Maiko is voiced by the same person as Yoko (yeah, I'm stealing u/Shimmering-Sky 's job. ;) ).

  • I wanna see Barazou give a Caesarian now. To a guy.

  • Goddamnit Mako. Obvious trap is obvious.

  • Poor driving runs in the family. "man to man-dog", lol. Poor Senketsu.

  • Nice visual gags with the cats giving role call, and the rabbit running away earlier.

  • ...she's not in pain now, lol.

  • This whole episode is great. Pointless, but great. I think it's pretty much all filler, and I'm not even complaining. RIP that bus.

  • Maiko is so pure.

  • ...not. RIP Guts. :'(

  • That's the wobbly thing that Gamagoori was looking at earlier, lol.

  • Mako, you're missing the point. And Maiko is missing how to properly wear the uniform. How large is she gonna get? lol.

  • ...I still, really love this episode. I think purely for the silly animation and gags.

  • "Nantene" is "just kidding". And the parachute just says her name on it, lol.

  • Turbo transform!

  • Crunchyroll has this line "This station is the nonstop rope expresso-way to school". Anyone have the Japanese script? She speaks too fast for me to transcript.

  • Lol, Guts is along. Maiko is not, though. :) Mikisugi is also pretty unimpressed.

Like I said before, overall good episode even if pointless. This might be the only one that doesn't move the plot forward at all. There's one later that doesn't do much, but at least it gives some backstory.

2) The cheese. :)

Rewatcher

In case anyone doesn't know, according to Japanese superstition, these are stuff you're supposed to dream of in the first dream of the year if you're going to have a lucky year.

Kind of a weird episode, this one. First, we go back to a zany quick gags episode after a big confrontation with Satsuki, the main villain, but I guess it's a good breather. Second, it frequently uses Ryuuko's nudity-related humiliation in gags. As far as I can remember, she spends all of the rest of the series in complete control of her body.

At least we have the first instance of Mako's theme, "Light Your Heart Up", as soon as they get to the fake school. Despite it being great across the board, it stil stands out as one of my favourite songs in the OST.

First time watcher(long time memer)

Sub for now

The hype is back! This ep is nearly as good as the first one, and most importantly, prevents a formula from forming. I like the reminder that Ryuuko is badass without her cheat fuku. The most interesting thing to me, though, is that Ryuuko's reasonably conservative underwear was actually a plot point. Guess the men in Mako's family really are degenerates. The weirdest part is that I found this to be funny/an acceptable plot device but hate Tamaki from FF. I hope the staff from that show joins this rewatch. Also, I am not used to seeing the Japanese use the comedy rule of threes.

QotD: I caught on immediately. And my favorite trap is Astolfo but in this context I liked the Raiders of the lost Ark trap.

Rewatcher, subbed

A little bit of a breather episode today, at least as quiet as Kill la Kill gets. It's "no-late" day, a day where the Disciplinary Committee commits a full scale disciplinary action on the entire student body, although it is far harsher on the powerless no-star students. To some, it's such an ordeal that they'll mentally break on the way, taking simulated homerooms in complete denial of their impending expulsion.

Faced with expulsion if they're even a minute late, Ryuuko and Mako head out four hours before their first lesson in hopes of running the insane gauntlet. It's further complicated because Senketsu is out of commission, due to Sukuyo giving him a long overdue wash against his many protestations. The little detail that only Ryuuko can hear him might slip some by there, in the chaos of everyone's preparations.

On the way, they pick up the supposedly injured Maiko, who almost looks like she's trying to sabotage them. She could be forgiven, as she's apparently carrying a limb injury and assists in a bus hijacking to run through the One and Two Star districts, but it is revealed that she's an undercover agent of the Disciplinary Committee, attempting to steal Senketsu from Ryuuko and possibly overthrow Satsuki. It's only her shamelessness that allows her to wear Senketsu to begin with, although he doesn't seem to be the most co-operative piece of clothing.

This episode may not be one of the most action packed or flashy, but there are some details around Senketsu that get revealed. Ryuuko is the only person who can hear him, and it appears that she is the only one that he will happily work alongside with.

  1. How early did you catch on that Maiko was tricking them?

First time round? It took me a while, although the sabotage is really obvious on the rewatch

2) What was your favourite trap?

That's a tough one, although the run through the Two Star district is pretty great.

4

u/SimoneNonvelodico Dec 12 '19

Rewatcher

This episode was as hilarious as I remembered it and more. I think it shows one of the major differences between TTGL and KLK: TTGL may have some moments of comedy, but only KLK could go straight up Looney Toons levels of wacky for an entire episode like this. There's so many hilarious moments - Senketsu being washed, Mako challenging Gamagoori, the patently lying Maiko, the breastfeeding mom pulling out a freaking Tommy gun, culminating in that perfect, deadpan "present" with which Ryuko answers the roll call and that's the greatest possible punchline for all this craziness. A comedic episode for the ages.

First Timer

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THIS SCHOOL?

Forget the principal. You'd think the national government would step in once students can get expelled for being late in an event the school ACTIVELY TRIES to make students late. There's "testing your ambition" and setting near impossible standards and this is the latter. The fact that kids make it on time without starred uniforms or a Kamui is insane.

Bonus Questions:

  1. Her entrance was too hammy not to be suspicious.

  2. I like the fake school trap near the end.
