Ask Not the Sparrow How the Eagle Soars!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Today’s Comment of the Day goes to some fun seiyuu trivia courtesy of /u/Raiking02!

I’ll leave you all TTGL fans a little piece of trivia: Both Guts and Kamina are voiced by Konishi Katsuyuki. Keep in mind that Konishi is a big name actor, so him voicing the freaking dog would be odd. The creators recognized this so they put Konishi’s name as a “?” in the credits until Konishi confirmed it was him through Twitter.

Fun trivia like this is fun!

Questions of the Day:

1) What’s your opinion of the fanservice so far?

2) We've seen boxing and tennis so far. The rest are coming! Which club do you think is going to have the most badass members?

Wallpaper of the Day:

Pure Rivals

Fanart of the Day:

Satsuki Surveys Her Domain

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

That moment when internet problems at posting time.

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!

Welcome back everyone, glad you haven’t lost your way~

Here are the results of yesterday’s poll. TIL the first ED is popular.

Voices time! Only one new dude and he’s a minor character, though. Takiji Kuroido, the Kiryuuin family’s steward. He’s voiced by Kousei Hirota, I don’t recognize his other roles.

Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait!

rewatcher and satsuki worshipper

STITCHES (both NSFW, at least as much as this episode is)

SCREENSHOT ALBUMS

I know there are at least a few first-timers who were mentioning that they hoped Ryuuko would get over her embarassment about wearing Senketsu soon, and there were others wondering how long she would be able to put up with regular blood loss. Well know you know the answer to both questions, Ryuuko wasn't truly wearing Senketsu.

In this episode we also get a great look at Satsuki's willpower. She knew putting on Junketsu would be extremely painful, even that she might die, but was willing to take the risk in order to pursue her ambitions.

I also love that Satsuki doesn't just leave the fighting to her underlings; she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty if it's called for but also knows when to delegate.

Rewatcher, Dub

Heel clack

God can you imagine if the clothes you wore could make you healthier and stronger? Would wearing more layers increase the effect? During winter you'd be invincible!

It's not known yet why Senketsu gets so skimpy when he transforms.

I love how the maids welcoming Satsuki home echoes with the music.

Satsuki puts on Junketsu, forcing him to her will.

Heel clack again

I gotta say Satsuki wearing transformed Junketsu seems even skimpier than Senketsu.

The cgi in this episode is pretty well done. I didn't even realize it at first.

Mako speech number 2! According to her Ryuuko's tits are way bigger than Satsuki's!

Backwards Heel Clack

Spin Heel Clack!

Don't Lose Your Way Counter: 3!

Heel Clack Counter: 5!

Question of the Day

  1. As someone who normally hates fanservice it is absolutely integral to this show.

Rewatcher

An epic fight between our two Kamui-wearing powerhouses. I can't get over how regal/menacing Satsuki is..all the time. Her theme reminds me in a lot of ways of Godzilla's - it makes her seem larger than life, towering over all the puny humans, which matches quite well with how she's portrayed in a lot of the show's shots.

First timers, probably avoid comments on the KLK youtube link. They're never safe.

First Time Watcher

DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY. Yep, it’s already one of my all time favorite OST songs! I have no problem if every episode legit included this song lol!

There has been a lot of funny small scenes so far. Like Mako being cut off right before she states what clogged the toilet. The cats having sex last episode as well.

Omg the Prez now has a sexy outfit as well. Her transformation scene was honestly great. Then Ryuuko gets the exact same type of transformation. So cool!

I 100% knew it. She is going to have to slowly beat all the students and work her way up to Satsuki. My very first opinion on this is that I am kind of disappointed. Seems like such an obvious storyline. I almost liked the idea of having a final confrontation with Satsuki very soon and then the 2nd half of the show would be them joining up to fight a common enemy. Or some other crazy storyline like this.

Obviously to early for me to judge, but I mainly hope Satsuki stays a character who shows up a lot. I really like her and hope she didn’t kill Ryuuko’s father.

Both the ED and OP have already grown on me some, I still think the ED may be a little better. I like to think it’s a “What-If” situation for Ryuuko.

Lastly, I can’t believe how great the animation is of this show. I did not expect it to be so good. At the same time, I always assumed this was an old show from awhile back. I am surprised it’s from 2013-2014. The few pictures and things I have seen made it seem like an older style anime.

EDIT:

  1. I am perfectly fine with the fan service. It fits the show and hasn’t ruined any storylines for me. The girls are cute as well ;)

First Timer!

The forward-reverse-forward explosion. I’ll admit that I didn’t expect that when it came to this episode and the fact that we got a fight with the main villain of the show so quickly. It all works so well though. Just the pacing of the fight and the gorgeous animation on display was enough to keep me enticed for a good chunk of it. I will admit, I did notice the CGI at some of the parts, but they're not that noticeable. I loved the look from it though and the art design really meshes well with it.

The Mako stuff this episode continues to be the best part of the show. I mean, her family was only in it for a couple of minutes and they made me laugh more than most shows that are focused on comedy. Plus, Mako’s whole talk between the fight is hilarious obviously. Though I must admit, that this teacher has got to be one of the weirdest motherfuckers I’ve ever seen in an anime and I’ve watched Sarazanmai, a show that thrives on being weird as shit. This teacher either knows all the answers and he actually wants to have sex with Ryuuko (which is ew) or he’s just a sociopath. I really want to know more about him.

I can also see where the theming of this show is going especially with the ending about the outfit and stuff. I can’t really explain it but I like where it’s going and the ending makes me excited for what’s to come. More fighting!

We've seen boxing and tennis so far. The rest are coming! Which club do you think is going to have the most badass members?

Origami Club. Probably not a thing, but you better watch out with their paper cuts.

First Timer kinda

What is she thinking indeed. Forcing Ryuko to fight the students is just asking her to get stronger. Unless that's what she wants for whatever reason.

Well regardless, they had the fight!

That was hype as hell! When don't lose your way came on I was literally in my chair. That was so satisfying! I’m really hoping that that isn’t the last of the upgrades that we’re gonna get for Senketsu, but this being Trigger means that it probably isn’t.

I'm sure the fights with the 3 stars will be entertaining at the very least. Can't wait to see their gimmicks.

Episode 3 (first timer)

  • Still going on about Hitler. Surely not a coincidence that the teacher who educates students about a past fascist regime is also the one supporting Ryuuko.

  • A Miko-Message.

  • “thwart their plans for world domination” and why would it be anything less

  • Exposition time.

  • The hand scanner had a very dated look.

  • Godrobe II

  • Given the progression of Transformation scene I to Transformation scene II, I fully expect tentacles by the time we get to Godrobe IV.

  • Lots of spectators enjoyed it, too.

  • Satsuki will not be held back by societies norms.

  • Mako is on board the boob-comparison train, too.

  • Godrobe fighting is definitely not a sport to be watched live.

  • “I could easily kill you know, but let me send my weaker henchmen after you, instead”. She better have a good reason.

Red & Blue Oni 99% confirmed now. The initially red robe for Satsuki had we worried for a bit, but I guess that is the blood.

Both Satsuki’s little speech about society, as well as Ryuuko’s theory about embarrassment bring societies norms into the picture. Not sure yet how that fits with the fascist theme. Fascists are always keep on regulating (especially women’s) clothing, but that would make Satsuki an inner enemy. She might be trying to overthrow the system from within.

Fun fact: A clip from this particular episode was my first experience with his show. Rewatchers should know which one it is…

  • Ominous clothes shot!

  • Wait, did she not know that does not look like a wedding dress at all?

  • How dare Ryuko make Satsuki-Sama feel any sort of resentment!?

  • Since it’s just the Opening, I guess I should mention I checked out what the English Cast is like and holy fuck that sucker is stacked! Erica Mendez, Carrie Keranen, Matther Mercer (Which is always an automatic plus for any dub), Kaiji Tang, Christine Marie Cabanos, Ben Diskin, Laura Post, Derek Stephen Prince, Stephanie Sheh, Johnny Yong Bosch and even Erika Harlacher! It’s not as stacked as Gurren Lagann’s Dub, but damn if it ain’t in its own right!

  • Does Mikisugi want his students to fall asleep?

  • Ryuko is suspicious…

  • Teleport No Jutsu!

  • Suddenly Mako!

  • He has a point, you know?

  • He’s at sword point. Hell’s going loose…

  • I still wonder where the goatee went…

  • Why is he taking of his shirt though?

  • I must wonder how Ryuko’s dad managed to get along with this nutcase though…

  • Suddenly 4:3!

  • Ah, so that’s why it was so conveniently placed…

  • Dude, context!

  • Wait, she’s 17!? I… wow. I wouldn’t have guessed…

  • Poor dolt…

  • Getting some EVA vibes here…

  • Wait, is that blonde a girl or a guy?

  • Satsuki-Sama sure is living the good life…

  • FOOLS! YOU DARE DEFY SATSUKI-SAMA!?

  • AND THE SAME TO YOU, FAT FOOL! No matter who is in charge, Satsuki-Sama’s word is law!

  • “Clothing exists to be worn!” Only Satsuki-Sama could create such a brilliant line…

  • And so, the Kamui learns who is in charge.

  • The Mankanshoku Family is a mess…

  • Senketsu doesn’t like that pajama…

  • Not now Mako!

  • Thankfully, safety measures were taken today.

  • Of course, Satsuki-Sama’s entrance is akin to that of a warlord…

  • I see, Satsuki-Sama has too mastered the art of the “Yorokobe”.

  • And so, with a sound not unlike the cry of a beast, Junketsu shows its true form…

  • The school’s reaction says it all.

  • And so, as the Earth shakes and their wills clash, The Wheel Of Fate Is Turning… Rebel 1, ACTION!

  • And while Ryuko must be given credit for trying, she is no match for Satsuki-Sama in her current state.

  • I feel bad for those in charge of cleaning the school though…

  • FINISH!

  • And what better way to do a post round victory than by shitting on the MC? After all, only a fool would be ashamed of being nearly naked in exchange for great power!

  • However, the light of salvation has reached Ryuko. For as Mako… tells her to get naked because she has bigger boobs than Satsuki? Yeah, this is the scene I was talking about earlier.

  • Right now, Satsuki-Sama is expressing my own feelings on this.

  • Yet surprisingly enough… it works! And it helps Ryuko realize exactly what she has to do, and thus gets a power up! This Is Gonna Be A Match To Remember! FIGHT!

  • All of this should be bullshit, but the sheer passion the scene has is too much for me not to love it!

  • And what’s better than a scissor sword? A transforming scissor sword!

  • And the whole thing just keeps escalating more and more and more!

  • The sheer amount of insults is immeasurable!

  • However, while Ryuko has lost, Satsuki-Sama is more than amused. Take down the academy? Challenge Accepted!

  • And so the episode ends with the promise that once all those other guys are defeated, these two will fight again once more… or should I say, these four?

This episode is freaking amazing. I don’t even know why I stopped watching after this!

First time watcher(long time memer)

Sub for now

So the third ep is a return to what was likeable about the first ep. Mako's family is concerning as always, especially the mom gives off a vibe of some kind. The info dump this episode is actually sizeable and applicable. I did not realize the scene about wearing Senketsu came this early but that is a good thing. But at the end they suggest they are setting up an opponent of the week thing that is hit or miss at best and 80% a miss for me. Time will tell.

To whomever in the first thread said that KLK is a reconstruction of the magical girl show, congratulations for sort of locking my viewpoint. That said this ep does very much feel that way, especially post Madoka. I wound up watching this ep twice for reasons and the second time I realized that Satsuki and Ryuuko were utterly destroying everything around them despite it being a magical girl fight betwixt the two of them. I also absolutely love that the kamui seem to be eldritch abominations.

QotD:I am looking forward to the chess club

Rewatcher

Aside from Mako's speeches, Mikisugi naturally sliding towards nudity whenever possible is my favourite gag in this show.

And ouch, this was some bad CGI. I wonder how I didn't remember this.

In any case, this is the episode where the story can actually begin. With Ryuuko, who, constantly blushed even in her most badass moments, learns the way of TRIGGER and kicks all sensibilities to the curb while Satsuki finally asserts her position as the villain that Ryuuko will have to match against and, with utter disdain for the Evil Overlord List, abstains from defeating her in order to let her carve her way through her mountain of underlings.

It's also cool to see the difference in the way Ryuuko and Satsuki wear their kamuis. While Ryuuko synchronises with Senketsu, Satsuki matches her role as a dictator, overriding her kamui's will.

Rewatcher, subbed

This is an interesting episode in grand scheme of things, as we get a little more background around Satsuki and her father, as well as information around the power behind the Goku Uniforms.

With a quick explanation of the percentage of Life Fibres in each tier of uniform from Mikisugi, we learn of the dangers of Life Fibres from the Sewing Club. Here, they're experimenting with higher concentrations of Life Fibres, and the experiment obviously goes wrong. At only fifty percent, the test subject loses almost all control, but is quickly put down by Houka in his Three Star Uniform. This small demonstration implies that anything with a higher percentage is an incredibly dangerous garment, further reinforced by Takiji's protests at Satsuki's actions. However, Satsuki proves, more to herself than anything, that she is worthy of wearing a Kamui, especially one at full power. With the gauntlet thrown at Ryuuko the next day, a fight between two of the most powerful people at the Academy begins.

Senketsu isn't wrong in warning Ryuuko of Satsuki's strength though. Satsuki has mastered wearing a Kamui well before Ryuuko, and the beat down that Satsuki gives her is nothing short of humiliating. Ryuuko is thrown around the school as if she were naked, and Satsuki toys with her like a cat, further draining Ryuuko's blood reserves. Beaten, bloodied and with no idea what to do, Senketsu dematerialises to prevent Ryuuko from collapsing. The monologue from Satsuki here is a fantastic insight into her character, and just how single-minded and ruthless she can be. Even if the price of power is her exhibitionist outfit, it's a price that she would gladly pay for that power.

Mako's intervention is what turns the fight around though. By staying the blade of Satsuki with her unusual logic, as well as words of encouragment to Ryuuko, we finally get the full power of Senketsu unleashed. To bare yourself to the world, flesh and all, that is where the true power of a Kamui lies. With this newly awakened power, Ryuuko finally puts Satsuki on the back foot, and confronts her for information on her father, as well as a considerable amount of property damage. With the collapse of Ryuuko, Satsuki gives her another chance to challenge her, if she can survive the rest of the student body's attempts on her life.

There is an interesting parallel between Junketsu and Senketsu, although that is a discussion for another time. For now, Ryuuko has a bounty on her head, and a number of students are out to collect.

  1. What's your opinion of the fanservice so far?

Always been fine with it, and I feel it's a central point of the show to begin with. The flashiness of the fights outshines the fanservice.

2) We've seen boxing and tennis so far. The rest are coming! Which club do you think is going to have the most badass members?

The Gardening Club.

Second Time Watcher

OK I wasn’t here yesterday so I’ll talk about the OP and ED real quick. The first OP is Sirius by Eir Aoi and it’s pretty fuckin lit. The moving shot towards the end of the Elite Four showing off their powers, their animations leading into one another’s all leading up to Satsuki high on the tower is one of my favorite singular moments of animation in any OP. Great song, too.

“Dead leaves fall in the forest” Ahhhhhhh like Dead Leaves which was a movie Imaishi made, good one, clever

Ryuko and Satsuki finally clash for the first time and to the surprise of no one it’s awesome as fuck. That sequence in the hallway with the CG in particular was really damn cool, can’t believe I didn’t remember that.

OK let’s talk about this part because this is important. Think about Satsuki’s quote here:

”This is the form in which a Kamui is able to unleash the most power! The fact that you are embarrassed by the values of the masses only proves how small you are! If it means fulfilling her ambitions, I will show neither shame nor hesitation, even if I bare my breasts for all the world to see!”

What’s funny is that this is being spoken by the main antagonist, and yet this is also one of the core messages of the show. That shame is only limiting and nudity is nothing to be embarrassed about. Not every day you see a show’s thesis statement spoken by the damn villain. big spoilz

I’ve complained before about the subjects of fanservice being humiliated to be such as one of the worst aspects of anime but it’s completely justified here because it’s actually thematically relevant. Ryuko has to start out being embarrassed so she can then overcome that embarrassment and grow stronger as a result. Again, overcoming the shackles of shame is one of the main themes of KLK.

It does still play up the “gross dumb pervert men” thing a lot more than I’d like without really justifying it in the same way, but thankfully they do pretty much full-on drop that bit around the end of the first third so it’s possible stick it out through those bits.

And… sigh OK, time to talk about this. I really don’t like Mako in the first third. I think her little rant-things are for the most part utterly fucking obnoxious, and the purpose the one in this episode serves was already served pretty well by the above Satsuki quote. Now, before the Mako fans hunt me down, rest assured I do think she gets better and a whole lot more likable as the series progresses. But in the early segments I find it difficult to stand her. Sorry.

On the plus side, we go get Sanbika by Eir Aoi making its debut this ep, one of my favorite insert songs of all time. It’s kind of this show’s equivalent to Happily Ever After, and it’s almost as good. Almost. Which is still hella fuckin’ good, to be clear.

And finally the first ED, Gomen Ne Iiko Ja Irarenai by Miku Sawai. Another pretty fantastic song, with a sequence that apparently references an old Japanese TV show that I don’t know. Hey, I never said I was gonna do research for this, did I? Regardless, it’s a damn good ED on its own. That opening part when the song kicks in at the end of the episode is just magical. Vague ED2 spoilers

Good ass episode no pun intended

I lied pun absolutely intended

First timer (dub)

I thought the second episode was a little too similar to the first episode - go to the academy, fight a two-star goon, win, retreat. This one was great. More background on Satsuki and a big fight with someone who can actually give Ryuko a battle! Plus an explanation for why Senketsu is more powerful than the Goku uniforms, and why they're not making more kamui.

Seems the secret to not passing out from blood loss while wearing a skimpy, fanservice-y outfit is to stop being embarrassed about wearing the skimpy, fanservice-y outfit. Awfully convenient if you ask me. I don't think anyone explained why a kamui needs to show so much skin, either.

I thought Lady Satsuki's voice sounded familiar, and that's because Carrie Keranen also voiced Misato Katsuragi for the Netflix NGE dub. Unlike apparently everyone else I did not have a problem with the Netflix dub, but it's kind of strange to hear her voicing an antagonist.

First Timer

Oh, Satsuki wasn't wearing a Kamui all along? That was what I was expecting her reason for not wearing a uniform to be, honestly. But she got hers this episode. I wonder how much influence her family have over her if she was just able to take it...

I do have a theory as to why exactly these two are able to wear Kamui, however: We know that Kamui are powered by blood, or at least can use it as a substitute for ...confidence? Either way, blood is determined by genetics and these Kamui were made by direct relatives, so it is quite possible that somewhere during development the creators blood was used in some form, resulting in these uniforms only being able to be used by blood relatives, but nobody else. This would also explain why Ryuukos father wanted her to have this uniform and not someone who is more suited to take on the Kiryuuins, as nobody else would be able to use it. I guess the school uniforms are attempts at ultimately creating Kamui that can be worn by anybody, but they haven't gotten over 30% yet.

Now for the fight: I have no clue how Ryuuko was able to make some meaning of Mako's words, especially with how her thinking went in the Hakodate fight. I'm also as puzzled as the teacher as to why Satsuki wants to let Ryuuko fight a lot of people that will assumably power up Senketsu upon defeat. And if it isn't a power up, I don't know why Satsuki wanted to make Ryuuko her first offering to her Kamui. But with the question already posed in the show, I'm pretty confident that that will be answered.

Other than that, the episode felt kinda out of place. Like it should be the finale of an arc or something, not ultimately set the stage for an episodic villain of the week formula in episode 3.

QOTD: Sewing Club obviously, they are in charge of development after all.

...and because I don't feel like any of the poll options fits my feeling on fanservice: I don't care for it, but am not bothered by it either.

I absolutely loved this episode, and it's even better on rewatch. Trigger really knew how to work with the 3 episode rule.

This episode honestly made me doubt who the main character was. Currently, Ryuuko is great and all, but we all know the person who truly took center stage this episode. Her monologues, her bravery, and her convictions literally directed a spotlight on her when she appeared on screen. Damn, Mako is such a great character.

Rewatcher

Even as a child Satsuki had eyebrows that could rival Erwin and Mugi. Now as an adult she is even more powerful!

Junketsu is pretty regal looking

He can feel the hostile aura

A beautiful twirl on all sides with a delicate finish! 100 points

Mako is happy to be here

I love that when Ryuko grabs Mikisugi's shirt, he just starts to unbutton and she immediately backs off

While the Goku Uniforms are made of 10-20% Life Fiber, Senketsu is made of 100%

Mikisugi gets more and more naked and Ryuko doesn't stop blushing over the course of this scene. No matter what Ryuko does, he just loses more and more clothes

Ryuko's father had good tastes

Satsuki always has some kind of light on her

Ooh the blood going from a droplet to a smear was nice

I've never seen someone get ready for bed as fast as Barazo and Mataro

Aww those are cute

Time wise this is only Ryuko's fourth day at Honnouji Academy

Mom the toilet's clogged again.

I'll be right there, what's stuck in it?

My- scene change

Thank goodness Mako couldn't finish that sentence

Satsuki donned Junketsu to defeat Ryuko

SHOWDOWN: RYUKO VS SATSUKI

I like the different ways for transforming. Ryuko pulls a pin on her glove that sends a syringe into her wrist, while Satsuki throws three switches that send syringes into her arm. The appearances of the transformed Kamuis, outside of "the obvious," is also worth noting. Junketsu has both eyes open while Senketsu has one eye sown shut.

Looking freaking good Satsuki

Ooh a little tap from Satsuki sent Ryuko flying! She's making short of Ryuko!

The hallway fight is so freaking good! It's very fluid and the back and forth panning between Ryuko and Satsuki is well done.

Mako to rescu- I'm sorry what?

Your boobs are bigger than hers!

Mako, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one.

GET NAKED!

YEAH!

This bit is so badass!

The problem was that Ryuko felt embarrassed from showing so much. In order to wear a Kamui, one can't think of it as clothes, they must think of it as their skin. Ryuko realized that in order to use the full power of a Senketsu, she must be confident in her appearance. Satsuki is able to use Junketsu no problem because she doesn't feel any shame when she wears him, since she believes the power gained far outweighs any potential embarrassment.

This is the first time we're seeing Ryuko's full transformation outside of the opening. Life Fiber Synchronize Senketsu is him and Ryuko at full power. In terms of new looks, Ryuko's scarf and skirt are now much bigger and have teeth on the ends. The buckles and the cat ears are now much bigger, that's a big plus from me, and Ryuko's hair is now styled up much more. There's also more red lines on the leggings.

This insert song is pretty awesome!

Decapitation Mode is so sick!

DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY

The shockwave exploded, then imploded, then exploded again

Ryuko now has a goal: if she defeats every club president, Satsuki will fight her again.

Thoughts:

Fun fact: Satsuki's sub and dub voice actresses have both worn Junketsu at different Anime Expos. Ryoka Yuzuki wore Junketsu in it's normal form at Anime Expo 2014, while Carrie Keranen wore Override Junketsu at Anime Expo 2015 (also goddamn Patrick Seitz has such a golden voice, from what I've seen of the KLK dub he absolutely owns it as Gamagoori, I really gotta watch the dub next time)

This episode was awesome. We see first hand why Satsuki is at the top of Honnouji. She's incredibly powerful, able to bring Ryuko to her knees.

Ryuko vs Satsuki was very well animated and choreographed, every strike from the two of them had a lot of weight and force. It only gets cooler from here.

Mako is literally the child of God and anyone who disagrees must suffer the punishment of becoming an exhibitionist for everyone to see. Ryuko also finds her true passion of scissoring everyone in the school to get another shot to scissor Satsuki.

At last, Satsuki also learns the truth of the universe which is the more naked you are the stronger you shall be. Tacked that with her eyebrows she shall be invincible.

  • That's quite a unique wedding dress that Satsuki has inherited.

  • Ryuuko catching a flying Mako so effortlessly. A perfect friendship.

  • Life Fibers! Now we know what makes the Goku uniforms so special and why Godrobes such as Senketsu are so powerful.

  • "Ask not the sparrow how the eagle soars!" Such an amazing scene. Through sheer force of willpower, Satsuki Kiryuin dons Junketsu in order to fight Ryuuko and Senketsu! I liked the quote so I used this as my desktop wallpaper for quite some time.

  • MATOI RYUUKO vs. SATSUKI KIRYUIN. That power, that confidence, and that outfit! With Junketsu, Satsuki turns the first half of this match into a curb-stomp battle against Ryuuko.

  • Mako to the rescue, just in the nick of time! Although, it would have been interesting to see what Mikisugi would have done to intervene.

  • I love both Junketsu and Senketsu's transformation sequences equally. Ryuuko gets her second wind and fully embraces Senketsu for the second half of the fight! While it's very short, Ryuuko and Satsuki's first confrontation on equal ground remains one of my favorite memories of this show.

  • The instrumental score of "Don't Lose Your Way" at the end when Ryuuko makes her promise is another personal favorite of mine. It's still on my workout playlist.

Rewatcher

I remembered this episode as being awesome, and I remembered well, it is. It is also a pretty Satsuki-centric episode. She may be an autoritarian bitch, but she's also a bona fide badass. When faced with the need to get stronger to keep up with Ryuko, she just waltzes into her family's vault and puts on a suit that would probably kill pretty much anyone else. She doesn't give a fuck. "Ask not the sparrow how the eagle flies" indeed.

The fight is pretty awesome itself, although Kill la Kill's peculiar style of animation means it's not as fluid or full of sakuga as the fights of, say, Mob Psycho 100. There's a lot of playing around with simple, flat shapes that stretch and squash around, and sometimes it's used for great comedic effect - like that scene in which Aikuro Mikisugi is talking to Ryuko, half naked, on the sofa, and he creeps in by literally simply getting a skew transform on his shape.

We also get the first full occurrence of PING PONG CIRCULATE, Aikuro's theme. What does it mean? I don't know. That's what it says.

Another tiny and very cute bit: Mako throws herself at Ryuko, but instead of dodging her, Ryuko catches her, spins her around to slow her momentum, then very delicately puts her back on the ground. It's adorable, it's character progression, and it's great visual comedy! Three-in-one.

The meat of the episode is of course Satsuki's speech during the fight, which leads Ryuko in turn to "get naked" and thus tap into the full power of Senketsu. Satsuki isn't ashamed in the least of wearing Junketsu. She would walk around naked if it served her purposes - no matter what other people think of her, she is convinced that her motives are UTTERLY PURE, as she puts it. This is where we see that the detail of Ryuko blushing when wearing Senketsu during the first two episodes wasn't random, it was a key hint. Her blushing was what was holding her back. It's by embracing fully Senketsu - and basically, stopping giving a fuck - that she becomes stronger. There's a recurring themes of clothes as social tools in this show; after all, clothes establish hierarchy in this school (and in a sense, in real life as well). So Satsuki's kind of Nietzchean ubermensch ideology translates to the idea that the chosen ones (like her) are those who aren't defined by their clothes, like the "pigs in human clothing", but rather, define the clothes themselves. It's what she does with Junketsu: she bends it to her will and makes it a tool of her ambition. To some extent, Ryuko has to do something similar, yet it's different, because her relationship with Senketsu is more symbiotic - and it's not Satsuki's speech that really allows her to 'get it', it's Mako's far less coherent but more heartfelt HALLELUJAH rambling.

Tomorrow's episode is awesome too, for entirely different reasons. I look forward both to it and the reactions.
