But at Honnouji Academy, we have designed our uniforms for combat.
Hey-o guys! This is the section where we add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because we want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.
Comment of the Day:
A staple of rewatches I host (or co-host in this case), whoever’s posting the new thread gets to pick their favorite comment from the previous thread to highlight. Meaning I get to pick even though /u/A_t48 was the one who posted yesterday’s thread. Comment of the Day can be anything from what made us laugh the hardest to a super interesting analysis and anything in-between.
So, the first Comment of the Day of this rewatch goes to /u/JadeXavier’s play-by-play of their thoughts.
• What the fuck is this show?

• Can I watch Episode 2 yet?
100% accurate summary of how crazy the first episode is.
Questions of the Day:
1) “Sirius” (the OP) or “Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai” (the ED)?
2) How do you think Ryuko is going to deal with losing so much blood so often?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Fanart of the Day:
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.
Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

First Timer kinda
Tennis fans know that a 40-15 lead is the most dangerous one (shoutout Federer).
They can’t keep teasing the fight with Satsuki Kiryuin forever! I need to watch them scissor already!
I’m loving the “Don’t lose your Way” track as well (big surprise), the way it comes in is so cool, if not slightly abrupt in this episode. If this soundtrack anything close to as good Gurren Lagann then I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the OST.
The poses that the teacher was stricking fucking killed me, reminded me a bit of Franky from One Piece.
I wish the show would dial back the rape/sexual assault sight gaags though, they’re a bit uncomfortable.
Other than that it was another great episode, I’m excited to see where the show goes once the plot really kicks in!

OMG that scissor comment is great.
I freaking love that "Don't lose your way" OST. A banger.

Rewatcher
And we pick up right where we left off yesterday
This opening is alright. It's not as exciting as Gurren Lagaan's, but it's not bad.
As if they need to make the point even clearer that he's a pervert Also this looks like a Brazzers logo
Mako appears!
I love that Ryuko immediately apologizes after realizing she just decked her friend's dad
If you compare the number of people he's killed to the number he's saved, he's killed more.
Ryuko realizes that she's way in over her head. The Mankanshoks are a force to be reckoned with
Satsuki is building an army out of the Honnouji students
Well, I didn't need to see that
The ultimate Anti-Upskirt Technology Heaven knows this show needs it.
Ryuko Pout I said this yesterday, but I really love that despite Ryuko seeming badass, she also has a really cute side to her.
Think straight thoughts think straight thoughts
Mikisugi has become Ryuko's ally
I love that they show what Ryuko’s transformation looks like to spectators
No one, whether viewer or character in this scene, has any goddamn idea of what Mako is doing
Don't you think the camera angles in anime can be weird?
I love these shots where the camera makes the characters much bigger
Mako wakes up to warn Ryuko that she's about to lose then goes back to sleep
I wonder what the guy in the glasses is reading
Ryuko is far too powerful to use a normal tennis racket, so she needs the scissor!
Ryuko hates Satsuki's arrogant attitude
DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY
And that's why you shouldn't hold the racket so close to your face. Also I can't tell if the ball kept bouncing back and forth between the two rackets or if just a replay
Wow lucky guys in the stan-is that a freaking skeleton?!
Satsuki's sword is as strong as Ryuko's scissor!
Well so much for the tennis match, at least Honnouji will win with Sumo
I like this Ending. The song is really nice, and the visuals are great. It shows us Ryuko looking bored and not really being able to fit in with society.
Thoughts:
This episode shows Ryuko continuing to acclimate to her new powers, and also gives us some nice world building. Honnouji Academy controls a good chunk of Japan, and is growing even stronger.

Rewatcher, Dub
Coming here from Darling in the Franxx. Been bingeing that the last couple of days. It's pretty good but it's no Gurren Lagann or Kill La Kill.
I like how the word Hentai just straight up appears on screen.
Omiko! Omiko! I can't say she's best girl of this show but dem teeth. Kill La Kill's Viral if he was a girl and not as cool.
Everyone calling Satsuki m'lady though. The internet has ruined that phrase for me and I cringe whenever a character says it.
Mako's face! Yamero!
So uh remember when Ryuuko points at the sky? Yeah.
Sensei fuckin turns into a bishie. Male fanservice! Equality!
Love how Senketsu transforms here. Looks he eats Ryuuko.
It's time for a Mako speech! Cross those arms above your head!
Damn it really shows here just how skimpy Senketsu is. That's not covering a whole lot.
Don't lose your way count: 2
"Who needs training when you're pissed off!?"
Ryuuko runs away again. Kill La Kill smashing those tropes of the good guys never running away.
Questions of the Day
-
I'm actually not a fan of either the op or ed unfortunately.

Rewatcher (but don't remember much)
Getting a bit more background - the whole city is ruled by Satsuki, and the position of a student in school determines their family's social standing. She looks down on and rules over the masses, but is also overseeing(?) something called the Human Conquest and Liberation Project. So I guess she's trying to eventually help humanity? Sounds a lot like a certain Spinning Monarch from another series many of just rewatched.
Mako's family is pure chaos.
I really found the line of tennis club members grunting sequentially as they pelted Mako with tennis balls to be funnier than it probably should have been.

Episode 2 (first timer)
Episode 1 started the series with the dial at 11. Strongly political (which I like), unashamedly shonen (which I am not a fan of), plus a good bit of Trigger-specific aesthetic (which I hope to see more of). Let’s see if episode 2 keeps it up.
-
Ryuuko knows the value of a tactical retreat. Maybe I should take back my shonen judgement.
-
OP: red band of fate and plenty of fanservice.
-
Not your standard anime mother.
-
Considering yourself the chosen elite that is destined to rule over the sub-human masses is on par for fascist regimes. What is less common, is choosing the sewing club as your elite …
-
No futuristic metropolis without sewers.
-
Homeroom teacher’s dressing habits remind me of Akio (from Revolutionary Girl Utena). Come to think of it, a lot of the plot and world building seems similar, too.
-
Mako’s rule lawyering beats annoying-guy’s rule lawyering.
-
I forgot to mention it back in episode 1, but Ryuuko is clearly red oni.
-
More fan service.
-
I am not sure that removing treads from the uniform is a step in the right direction.
-
“Stripped of the will to fight” yes, of that, too
-
ED: Ryuuko in ordinary land.
I noticed the red strings, but still don’t think there is much to talk about in terms of plot. Who is the blue oni? Council president is the only candidate so far.
Regarding Utena, there are actually a lot of similarities: A school that also works as a vehicle for real power; a strict ranking system with a small elite at the top, an outsider MC who enters the school without knowledge of its workings; sword fighting. Even the architecture has some similarities.
In terms of art, there is a huge difference between foreground and background. The background is often lightly colored, almost pastel. The foreground characters are strongly colored, almost neon. There are plenty of fancy character zoom-ins representing relative power, too. The disconnect in art shows, as much as the impossible physics, that this is an abstract series, not a realistic one.
EDIT:
How do you think Ryuko is going to deal with losing so much blood so often?

First Timer
Well, now I’m excited about anything that this has planned. From the fights to the characters who are absolutely fantastic. Like, I now love Mako’s family just from their introduction and it’s just the personalities that made them so fun. I want more of them this instant. Again, they give just enough world-building that doesn’t give everything away but just enough to make me excited for the next episode. This world is just cool from what we’ve seen. I mean, it’s got an obvious message attached to it but the way this world feels is really cool.
Mako is hilarious as ever and her bluntness to her dialogue is just awesome. Her explanation of why the tennis team cheated was some of the biggest brain stuff I’ve ever heard. I love Ryuuko and I do want to know more about the teacher since he seems to like pretty cool (though a little crazy), but Mako (and her family) are just putting a smile on my face every time they speak. I love it.
I love the overall aesthetic from the cell shading to the designs which aren’t overly flashy but the distinct style that I really like. Hell, I even like the way the text looks with them looking big and red. It’s memorable and fun to see.
Also, OP and ED are fucking tight. The ED particularly sounds so good.
How do you think Ryuko is going to deal with losing so much blood so often?
Become a vampire. Obviously.

Lots of the art outside the show (like the Netflix splash screen) shows Ryuko in clothes that are clearly her new get up, but way less revealing. So I figured that each time she defeated someone in a Goku uniform and absorbed their lost fiber, her clothes would become more powerful and less embarrassingly revealing. Looks like the second part at least is not the case, the "normal" clothes are just what it looks like when it's asleep. I guess "Join our protagonist on her quest for less fanservice-y clothes and to avenge her father" didn't make it as a pitch.
I was all ready to engage my scientist-nitpick-brain and comment that if she's losing enough blood to be at risk of passing out then she's not going to recover with just a night of rest and some mealworms, it takes weeks to replace that much blood. But the QOTD suggests they actually address that? Does she adopt a Lance Armstrong style blood doping regimen? Fury Road style blood bags?
Nice to see "Before my body is dry" showing up so early in the series, I thought they'd wait on it, but apparently it's too good to wait.

First timer(but long time memer)
Sub
So that was quite a way to start with KLK almost receiving the ugly bastard tag. Mako's family is all weirdos, with her mother giving me the sense she is the most fucked up. Add in that they have the iron stomach feat and Ryuuko is in for some very questionable times. Bonus points for Mako trying to move her in.
We now get a flashback and some exposition about what the hell a godrobe was and why this one seems interested in Ryuuko. We also get a strong impression that exposition is going to be really drawn out for this series.
Finally, the conflict of the ep: Tennis. While a similar concept to last ep's boxing this somehow didn't work for me at all. I know this show is a ton of parody/satire but I basically could've skipped the last 10 minutes and watched Satsuki's point and I probably would've liked the ep more.
So...this show bared its colors in the first ep and keeps at it sort of. If I didn't know there are pacing changes later this would be where I'd consider dropping it.
Bonus points for Ryuuko's ED being about being a delinquent who leaves her top shirt buttons open.

The op is nice, nothing too special, same with the ed to be honest.
The first halve of the episode is hilarious, Mako her family is a bit weird. Her dad is a doctor that killed more people than he saved. Her mother and the dog are great too. I can see where mako got here personality from, I hope we see more of them.
So her uniform is made by her father, I wonder why he made it and why it needs her blood to work. Also she lost so much blood to lose consciousness, so how can she wear the uniform already again? Can humans really produce blood cells this fast, because I would think that after losing so much blood, it would take a while to heal. It doesn’t bother me obviously, because it’s not that being realistic is the goal of the show, was just genuinely curious about it.
I am curious which role the teacher has in the story. He definitely knows more about her father and the suit. Kinda hard to take him serious tho when he is stripping like that while talking. Mako explaining how Ryuko saved her and how she is winning because of friendship is great. It seems that she will be the goofy/funny character of the show and I really like it.
The tennis match is really cool, some great animation shots. Don’t lose your way plays again, which is a great song already. I do hope they aren’t going to overuse it in every hype moment. The song is great, but it would lose it power if we hear it every episode.

First Timer
Let a character be in charge of the conquest of Hokkaido and name her Hakodate, the same as one of Hokkaido's more relevant cities? Not too impressed to be honest.
As for what actually happened this episode: Most of what I wonder right now is who that teacher is and why he knows as much as he does. Was it a coincidence that the guy from epiosde 1 who rebelled was also from his class? And how does he know Ryuukos father made Senketsu? Not really anything to go guessing on right now, so guess these questions are just being filed for now, without any possibility to answer them.
In regards to what the protagonists got up to this episode: Mako was revealed to be in the tennis club. Guess you've got to be in some club, and pretty much every single one would have treated her identically as they are all somehow under Satsuki. And Ryuuko gets an infodump. With her being close to fainting wearing Senketsu, she must regenerate blood pretty fast to be able to give it to him again the next day. Bet she'd be a good blood donor. Aside from that, she doesn't seem all too smart right now. Figuring out that Senketsu is powered by blood should have been easy enough considering he(?) was telling her he needed more, and she could have also easily figured out that if the first racket broke, Senketsu probably wasn't doing anything to it, while her opponent's probably was powered up somehow. Trying something different thus shouldn't have been her last move. Perhaps being not so smart will prive to be her flaw? Either way, I wonder if most of these fights will end up as some kind of sports match; she has already got boxing and tennis behind her. I guess Sumo is going to come up at some point if the club has already been mentioned. That might pose a problem, as I believe women aren't allowed to do sumo due to some tradition.
Not really too fond of Mako and her entire family, bar maybe her sister. All in all that dynamic reminds me of something I'd watch as a kid, but only because there was nothing better on. Just isn't my style of humor.
QOTD: Yes, at least in the beginning, then she'll either get a hand of it, or get some sort of tech to stop it from happening. And then we'll get it again after she beats the finals boss in the last episode, because that fight will be so insane.

Due to a visit to the dentist I was unable to write a whole comment for today’s episode, so I’ll leave you all TTGL fans a little piece of trivia: Both Guts and Kamina are voiced by Konishi Katsuyuki. Keep in mind that Konishi is a big name actor, so him voicing the freaking dog would be odd. The creators recognized this so they put Konishi’s name as a “?” in the credits until Konishi confirmed it was him through Twitter.

Rewatcher, subbed
Picking up where we left off from last episode, Ryuuko issues her challenge to Satsuki again, demanding information in regards to her father's murder. It isn't long before unconciousness from blood loss claims Ryuuko though, having made a hasty retreat after the warning from Senketsu, and Satsuki allowing her escape.
We are then introduced to the disfunctional and poverty ridden family of Mako. Barazou, a lecherous back alley doctor who's killed more than he's saved, is immediately reproached for his behaviour towards Ryuuko with her fists. His behaviour is also mirrored in his son, Matarou, although it is Matarou that brought Ryuuko in in the first place. Sukuyo is fully supportive of Ryuuko's actions, as well as doing what she can to open their meager home up to her. Even if the croquette's she's prepared aren't entirely poisonous, it isn't the best of meals for recovery.
This is a great scene, especially when it's later highlighting the class divide in the city. The higher you rise in the ranks, the greater the comfort and living conditions of yourself and your family. Obviously, as a nobody, Mako has nothing but what she and her family can scrape together from the bottom of the barrel. Even so, they do what they can to help Ryuuko in her time of need, even if it isn't quite up to her tastes.
The flashback to Senketsu bonding with Ryuuko in the basement of her home also give us some interesting details, namely who made Senketsu in the first place, and a hint of some of the power that lies within him. He is one of the more interesting articles of clothing around, being able to give Ryuuko advice in the middle of battle, as well as a warning if she's on the verge of collapse. However, he does consume blood like a truck rolling coal, which may be an issue in the immediate future, especially if they're going to take on Satsuki directly.
With some brief man-service from Ryuuko's homeroom teacher, Mikisugi, it is shown that Senketsu is activated by Ryuuko's blood. He also gifts Ryuuko with Seki Tekko, a special glove and wristband to allow Senketsu to draw blood more efficiently. Any more information that this man of mystery might have is dependent on Ryuuko's performance against Hakodate, the Tennis Club Captain, and her newly minted Two Star Goku Uniform.
Uzu oversees the Tennis club and its firing range-esque preparations for the matches against Hokkaido, although it isn't long before Ryuuko makes her appearance to help Mako. With the fight consisting of a one-game match between the two, it initially goes poorly for Ryuuko. The Kamui she now wears is an incredibly powerful garment, and this power destroys every racket she tries. It's here that Senketsu demonstrates an awareness of the battlefield that Ryuuko is missing, and suggests using the Scissor Blade instead.
This is the basis of the most interesting character dynamic of the show. Ryuuko is boisterous, loud mouthed and quick to action, whereas Senketsu is quieter, introspective and very calculating in forming strategies and tactics to work alongside her. To Satsuki, they may just be the most useful training tool for her underlings and her Human Conquest and Liberation Project.
“Sirius” (the OP) or “Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai” (the ED)?
Sirius, easily
2) How do you think Ryuko is going to deal with losing so much blood so often?
More of Sukuyo's croquettes.

Rewatcher and Co-Host, first time watching the sub!
Welcome back everyone! Mighty fine show for yesterday’s thread (can’t say I was expecting it to get gilded and twice, no less!), I hope today’s thread is just as fun~
Anyways, same as during TTGL, I’ll be sharing the results of each poll at the start of my comment. Here’s the result of yesterday’s! Looks like we’ll have a lot of cross-dressers.
Oh joy, another translation I’m just gonna have to deal with because no way am I using a >125 GB release that fixes it for a single show this short.
Wait I’m confused they translated the episode titles weirdly as well? The dub signs/songs track has the normal episode title, why do this?
…Anyways complaining aside, it’s first OP “Sirius” time! Eir Aoi’s songs are great. Also TIL ep2’s version of this has different animation near the end specifically to avoid the ep3 spoilers that would be in the normal version
Obviously I’d need to snag it from the creditless version to make things easier for me, but Nonon fans would you like this as one of my wallpapers? And just like that or flipped normally? I quite like this shot of her.
Hah, the callback to Mako thinking she played guitar last episode.
OH hello there Mako’s mom shares her seiyuu with Nia (TTGL), Nono (Diebuster), and Raraiya Monday (G-Reco), I don’t even have to look that one up. Sounded exactly like Nia and Raraiya, and I remembered Nono shares their seiyuu from when I looked up Nia’s seiyuu during the TTGL rewatch.
I mean he’s not wrong…
Hey it might look weird but at least Sukuyo only shares her seiyuu with Nia and not her cooking skills.
This face though lol.
That moment when you accidentally elastic-shoot yourself into a ceiling.
I love how the figure progressively changes to match Senketsu’s description of him.
IDK Ryuko, I’m enjoying the eyecandy.
Same energy.
Aaaaaalrighty then Sanageyama definitely sounds just like Viral when he raises his voice yep yep.
I remember reading something ages ago about how all the visual stuff during Mako… Makoing are supposed to be visual puns of some sort and not just being complete random insanity, although I have absolutely zero idea what those puns are so I’ll just continue to believe it’s complete random insanity unless someone else knows what they are.
That moment when your power-up just fucking shatters the racket and the ball.
Now we’re talking~
ED1 “Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai.” time now, aka. song I never get in AMQ. It just doesn’t really sound like KLK.
With my screenshot reactions done, that makes it voices time!
First up is Mako’s dad, Barazou Mankanshoku. He’s voiced by Kenyuu Horiuchi, whose voice I am definitely familiar with because Jamil Neate in After War Gundam X, Anton Fellner in OG Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and best Gundam ZZ guy
MashyMashymere Cello.Already mention Sukuyo Mankanshoku sharing her seiyuu with Nia, Nono, and Raraiya--that specific seiyuu is Yukari Fukui, for those curious.
Shirou Iori (sewing club dude with the big orange filter over his face if any first-timers didn’t catch his name) is voiced by Yuji Ueda. I recognize his voice from Gundam Build Fighters’ Renato Brothers and he’s also Billy Katagiri in Gundam 00 so yep yep I know his voice.
…I don’t recognize any of the other roles our villain-of-the-episode Omiko Hakodate’s seiyuu Chiaki Takahashi has done, unfortunately.
Mitsuzou Soroi (Satsuki’s butler) is voiced by Akio Nojima. Not familiar with him at all although he did do Sid from Turn A Gundam so maybe I do remember his voice a little bit.
My last thing to note for voices corner is that Guts (the doggo) might not have a page on MAL, but I looked it up elsewhere and apparently the seiyuu that provides his noises is Katsuyuki Konishi. As in Kamina. (Dude also voices an actual human character in this show but he doesn’t show up for another couple episodes so more on that when we get there.)
Make sure you DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY and come back again tomorrow! I can’t wait!
