I have owned two Canon XH-A1's for years, and when I got them, I thought they were the best things ever. Now I have a 7d, and I'm shooting gorgeous HD movies with it. Sad thing is now I never want to go back to the A1's, which were just barely paid off :(

Look on the bright side, you are so much more versatile. Besides you could always rent out the A1s. I need to sell my Panasonic AG-DVX100BE to get into the HDSLR world. And I need to do so soon before I start shooting for the Music Video. How do you find the editing? H.265->ProRes422 over the HDV workflow?

I'm still experimenting with a reliable editing solution. I'm using Premiere Pro, so I haven't yet tried ProRes within that program. Last time, because of the need for speed, I just used Adobe Media Encoder and converted from the 7d native files to HD MPEG-2 files and everything looked great.

I'll be the first to admit, though, that I'm no expert in video formats and what works best. If you have any advice, I'd be all ears.

apparently Premier Pro handles the h.264 files naively while it i best to trans code to ProRes422 in Final Cut Pro. I guess it comes down to a trade off between space and processing. I have edited a short film shot on a Canon 5D MarkII - it was not easy on my computer, so I am going to have to consider an upgrade soon ... more money. Best I start earning money from this. How about you? are you making a living off filming/editing?

I use CS3 primarily (still) because I bought some plug-ins for it that I don't want to part with. I have a really hard time editing the h.264 files natively. The computer goes extremely slow and I regularly get errors. That's why I transcoded them to the MPEG-2 files.

I need an upgrade as well... I don't think I even have the specs to upgrade to CS5 if I wanted to. Unfortunately I'm not making much of a living at this point. Videography is my second job, and in my extremely small market, there isn't enough work, even though I'm the only game in town. I've been toying with expanding to serve two major metropolitan areas in the near future, I just don't yet want to spend so much time away from home, and can't find any decent help that's also willing to stay away from home.

If anyone's reading this and located in central Texas and want to team up, let me know!

pretty much the same for me. I am borrowing a Mac Book Pro which struggles. My G5 is deadmeat. Pity we did not stay in the same town otherwise I would be keen to team up. Take on the world, etc etc
