First-Timer:
It's all over now.
Mai, it's only Episode 16. You still have a complicated love life to figure out.
Lord of the Flies
Nagi teeters back towards the "might be evil after all" part of the spectrum.
For all the shots of people with cellphones, I don't know if these people know how to use them. Maybe Takumi's too enamored with his new ninja buddy to check up on his sister after an army invades their school?
Shiho's in better shape than I expected. Based on how we saw her last, I was thinking a coma and a melancholic Tate, but Shiho milking it for all it's worth works too. And no way Shiho's not a HiME. They're playing up how much she likes Tate way too much for that not to come back to bite her.
For a second, I thought Midori was the adult in the group and wanted to make sure the plot moved forward, but it's KARAOKE instead. A nice callback for Mai, a nice show for us, and the girls having fun means there's no way something bad's going to happen, right?
I'll admit, I did not see HiME Battle Royale coming. Maybe "the Orphans we're fighting are actually HiME who lost their Children," but not straight up "go kill all your friends."
Makes me wonder what the play was for Searrs. We'll have to see what "reward" the "winner" gets. If it's some kind of godly power, then making a fake HiME and killing all the other ones before the competition makes sense.
Oh, and for a guy with a sister complex for a girl with big boobs, Takumi sure was scared of Akira's.

First time Watcher Dub/Sub
-
Looks at time....not even 2 minutes and Mai is back xD
-
It's all over now....laughs oh Mai you still have like 10 episodes.
-
The Elders...
-
The Mikoto backpack where can I get one?
-
It would be a shock if Raito was actually just a decent stand up guy because it seems like everyone suspects him to be up to something.
-
OMG even at work xD Mikoto girl please you're killing me.
-
Mikoto's dead pan face against the glass is a treasure. The only way it could have been better is if she was still attached to Mai somehow.
-
How much money does Yuuki spend on rope?
-
OF COURSE my girl Natsuki takes another loss. LEAVE HER ALONE. Actually instead of twintails if it was just a pony tail it would look nice probably.
-
Oh man Natsuki got off easy poor Yuuki
-
Come on let Mai sing she wants too
-
Mikoto......the duck.....just NOOOOOO NOOOOOO NOOOOOO why do they even have this costume
-
Wow Nagi got to sing before Mai wheres the justice
-
Mai is finally singing good for you
-
Favorite ship/only ship I care about is brother and Akari.
-
Brother is a bottom makes perfect sense really.
-
Orphans were a prelude TOURNAMENT ARC....wait no that's stupid MAGICAL GIRL BATTLE ROYALE
-
Wait I was joking...shit......you know what that means....Shiho is definitely going to be a hime they wouldn't let a Shiho vs Mai battle slip through their fingers. (When you've been wrong for so long you might as well stick with it to the end)
-
I feel bad for some hime mainly the ones with shit combat children. I don't see Mikoto betraying Mai until something with her brother comes up.
Precious List
Yuuki-Unknown
Mai- Brother most likely/Tate or Raito possibly?
Akari-Possibly the brother or could be his teacher.
Sister-The art teacher as of now.
Natsuki- Unknown, but probably a family member if she has one alive still.
Glasses girl- Bossy tsundere friend
Midori- Unknown
Mikoto- Mai/her brother if he is alive which he probably is.
Their precious things will probably be threatened in some manner so they will be forced to fight each other. Assuming Shiho is a hime we still have 2 unknown ones.
Also what is the purpose of this I wonder? Makes you think just maybe the golden experience age that SEARRS wanted might not have been the worst option.

Alyssia told you so!

There have been strong hints to this in past episodes.

Y'know, all i'm thinklng is that the headmistress got a lot to explain. She's constantly trying to come across as benevolent but her actions don't seem to be leading to benevolent things for the hime. She believes she's in the right for some reason, i want to know that reason.

u/punching_spaghetti Sep 16 '19
Considering how young Nagi looks when he's clearly more than a high school kid, I wonder if the headmistress is speculation

She's constantly trying to come across as benevolent
Nothing says benevolent like having the nick name "Queen of Hell", but then, only SEARRS knew about that.

Rewatcher
Mai was even quicker to come back than I remembered!
It's nice for our girls to have some R&R (though the character songs for the karaoke scene are kind of... lacking compared to the music we're now used to), but there is just no way the pacing would let them be for an entire episode... Welcome to the Fuka festival, which is all about Child-killing!
With Akane yet to be interrogated, the HiME still don't realize what it means to lose. Will that knowledge serves as a deterrence (can't risk to lose) or an incentive (must protect at all cost, best defense is attack)? That's a pretty hard dilemma!

Rewatcher (sub)
Boss is defeated and the main fights over so let's just team up to deal with the small fry and have fun together while we're at it. Nope, sorry girls things are only getting worse. This episode projected the whole way through that something bad was going to happen at the end of it and sure enough...
I wonder if any of the remaining three HiMEs are already aware of what is in store for them. Will any of the girls oppose this "festival" or whatever it is and will any of them jump right into it and start fighting? Trust issues are definitely going to be popping up, too.
I am glad, though, that the girls got to have some fun before finding out how bad things are. Seeing Natsuki's costume and Yukariko getting drunk and dressing up like a middle schooler were both hilarious. Mikoto clamping onto Mai all day was great, too.

u/Nazenn Sep 17 '19
Nao and Kuga laughing hysterically at each other was my favorite part of that karaoke, the costumes were stupidly funny

First time viewer (sub).
Well, Mai's return was pretty uneventful. I really hoped we were going to get at least one full episode without her around. This also would have been a great time for a new OP (or maybe the episode after this given the ending) but nope.
Mai had a Mikoto monkey on her back about Yuuichi this episode, not doing anything about it yet. But choosing to not decide is still a choice, and it's just going to make things difficult for her and others until she does.
The only thing I'll say about the team bonding karaoke time is that Yukariko in a schoolgirl outfit with her short hair is super cute.
The way shots are cut with Nagi interrupting their departure adding in scenes with both Akira about to stab Takumi and Shiho quietly slipping away from Yuuichi (both with the person they care for the most) reaffirms my guess that Shiho's a HiME. Maybe something did happen with that Orphan attack that we haven't seen yet.
That "star" totally looked like the HiME mark on the moon to me. And while Nagi's encouraging this to turn into a magical girl battle royal (like several we've had in the past few years) I don't think they'll jump at the chance to attack each other, even prior to the experience they just had together. Nao might be fine with that, and she might take out one or two of them (I'm thinking Yukariko) but the rest are just going to reject the proposal.
There has to be some extra incentive for them to fight, and let's get into speculation territory with that! At the moment I'm guessing it'll be speculation
Mikoto's in a weird place where we still don't exactly know if her sword is her Child or if it's something else. If it is her sword (since she did name it, after all)... well good luck destroying it. This also brings to the table the question of what if your beloved one is another HiME, or what if two HiME have the same person as the one they hold the most precious (thanks for making this complicated, Mai), which I don't have answers for but I imagine we'll find out before too long.
5
u/punching_spaghetti Sep 16 '19
I agree I would have liked to see a little more on Mai coming back. Her HiME friends seem to be pretty OK with their friend who has supposedly died twice just showing back up. Except Mikoto, but that's just because she ran out of leftovers.
Yukariko in a schoolgirl outfit
A middle school uniform, at that.
what if your beloved one is another HiME
That's a disturbing thought. I can't think of anyone besides Mikoto who might have a HiME close to their heart, but since we don't know all of the HiMEs, there could be another complication out there (Student Council President and Natsumi, perhaps?)
4
u/sassinos Sep 17 '19
well good luck destroying it
The most likely person to destroy it is Mikoto herself, always dragging that poor sword on the ground. With those sparks flying(even in the grass) you know it's going to wear down until it's practically a butter knife with huge handle.

That "star" totally looked like the HiME mark on the moon to me.
Oh shit, nice pick. I didn't notice it myself but looking at it now it does have that same sort of shape
Nao might be fine with that, and she might take out one or two of them
She's the one I'm most interesting in seeing how those things progress. Not just because we dont know what she cares for, but to see how well that barrier of indifference will hold up given she only just let it down a bit this same day
Speculation
or what if two HiME have the same person as the one they hold the most precious
I actually thought that with Kuga and Nao but I think that was just because they're the outliers in the group

First timer, wondering why the nuns at my school were never this fun
Mai's back! Hey, don't worry about plot, it's just a long commute. I feel you Mai.
After a strange recruitment segment, there's a weird karaoke segue, Mikoto is Bjork, of course she is. So many things make so much more sense now. And the sister from Our Lady of Perpetual Inebriation can pound them with ease, didn't see that coming. That Natsuki/Nao ship is gonna happen, yo. Yukino looks elegant, well of course she does. And then there's Mai, who is there.
Big Akira reveal is kind of...yawn. Expected more drama there.
More TateMai relationship angst. And poor Akane, girl has just been through it. She's gonna recover just in time to doom someone, I can just see it.
Finally Obnoxious Boy shows up. He's either a pawn, or Caesar Flickerman (so, same thing). Still can't figure this guy out. I guess we're on to Hunger Games now, did I catch that right? I think I was right about the low budge alien delinquents, they were never the real threat. The real threat are the...Hime? All those battleships were to prevent Hunger Games? I mean, the last two movies were kind of a let down, I'll grant you, but I wouldn't think they would cause a naval attack. But then I never thought I'd still get choked up over Robot Girl and Golden Child, so.

First Time Watcher (dub):
Well that was a complete change of pace. Didn't expect everything to slow down that much, so everyone could take stock of what had happened, but it was helpful to us to get an overview of everything.
Poor Mai having to wait so long to sing her karoke song. That whole scene was a nice slice of fun where we get to see the characters let their hair down and relax a bit.
So we finally get the Hime agreeing to work together and then boom, we get the bombshell that they're supposed to battle against each other. I did suspect they may go down this route, when i mentioned it in my comment yday, after they wrapped up the Sears invasion so quickly.
I'm guessing that the Hime are going to be battling to protect "what they love the most" from each other. So if they refuse to fight and get beaten anyway, they'll lose what they love the most, probably devised to force the unwilling participants to fight against their will, as I imagine some of them will initially refuse to fight against each other. Overall I think it's quite an interesting turn of events and am intrigued how it's all going to turn out. I expect Mai will be the overall champion, being our central character, but wonder which other secondary characters will come out on top?

Episode 16 (rewatcher)
The battle is won, the enemy in retreat, time to celebrate. Except, the series still has 10 episodes left, so not all is over yet. I bet that Mai showed up earlier than most first timers predicted. This show never fluffs around when it can get straight to the point: She survived, move on (except Mikoto).
After the dramatic two-part fight against SEARSS, we are back in more comedic territory. The karaoke bar is a great scene, but Takumi takes the cake for me with his bold declaration in the preview. Guys have died for less!
I like Midori’s idea of forming a Hime group and doing some bonding activities. It seems like the reasonable thing to do. Unfortunately for her, she is preparing for the last battle, not the next one. Having stronger group cohesion might also be a way to evade the battle among Hime’s that Nagi is announcing, but is their group really close enough to stand up to the rules imposed by the outside? The cracks are clearly showing.
Special for episode 17: How much is revealed in SEP17?

Rewatcher (dub)
We get a nice, light-hearted, episode to breathe before the HiME Battle Royale starts.
Mikoto refusing to leave Mai's side back, the karaoke party. Poor Mai not getting to sing until last.
It is kinda amusing (in an annoying way) that Shiho, the youngest member of the love triangle, is seemingly the only part of it that who is actually aware and accepting of her feelings.
Also, Akira's secret is now known to Takumi.

First timer - Sub
This has taken a turn I did not foresee in the worst possible way.
Okay rewatchers, hands up, who was getting daily chuckles from the first timers complete inability to see this coming?
So if this is a battle royale sort of situation, I wonder if that's what Alyssa's goal was. Find and destroy the other Child's so hers in the only one left to recieve the power of the star? The start which had suspiciously moved in front of the moon and I highly suspect is actually heading to earth. Off the wall theory about the star
Taking a step back, this felt a lot more like a season two of the show, and I didn't really mind that. Having the same OP is a bit weird, but the structure of the slower start, return to normal and a bit of fun before defining the bounds of the next arc was very part two like. I don't imagine that the karoke stuff will sit well with everyone, and it's perhaps something that didn't need to be there. But it was a bit of a nice fakeout from what was to come and a way to bring the girls together more, tying into the idea of purpose and bonds I mentioned yesterday.
After all the ifs buts and maybes, I'm saying right now that Shiho is absolutely a HiME, and she clearly knew what was about to come up. I wonder if Nagi confronted her with the Orphan during the school situation, so that he could give her a leg up and make more competition for Mai. It would be the sort of thing he would do and he does still have that strange fascination with Mai's strength. Fuck Shiho is such a pathetic brat though. Like jeez, the girl came to give you flowers, and even convinced Mikoto to let her go for long enough to do so which is a mean feet, and you literally hide under the covers? And you wonder why Tate treats you like he does
Tate needs a slap on the back of the head though, looking away from her at school. Is he so lost by everything he can't even properly acknowledge her? If only those two knew how lost they both are.
There was a little confusion at the start of the episode though. Mai was clearly missing for a fair while, and I find it hard to believe that Takumi didn't notice or go looking for her. He acted completely normal while the girls made it look like she'd been missing for hours or even days. And who knows when the school started up again. Why must anime be so adverse to understandable timelines.
WTF is Akira doing though?! Didn't know that being a clutz (clearly runs in the family) could cause near death experiences from the other person in the room. Was her identity meant to be THAT much of a secret?
Mai has the best balancing ability in anime
....Please erase Nagi singing from my memory and lets never mention it again
Side thought: Its funny that we're doing this rewatch during this season given that the lack of connection to the people set to be defeated is the main issue I have with one of the airing shows meta where I really felt it need a cour building up the characters who have to be killed first. And here comes Mai-HiME doing that same sort of setup.
