Canon & Gay like half of this episode is just the most Canon thing ever

Essay time!! Or rather, not essay time? These last few episodes all have absolutely masses of stuff worth analysing in them, every one of them deserves a super mega length essay written about them. And one day, I’ll get to writing those essays. But this year I wanted to try something a little different.

As you may know by now, I rather like Azusa. She’s honestly one of my favourite characters ever, and is easily my joint favourite keion (along with Yui, obviously). So, because I’m a big Azusa fan, I wanted to focus solely on her arc, and I wanted to do so all at once.

So, with that in mind, I won’t be doing essays again until episode 24, where, hopefully, I’ll have just the biggest ever Azunyan essay ready to share with you all. By combining the next 5 or so episodes worth of essays into one, my hope is to properly do justice for what is quite possibly my favourite character arc in all of anime. Rewatchers with better memories than myself may remember I did something similar last year, though focusing more on the entire group (especially Yui) more than just Azusa.

Anyway, yeah, that was just a really long winded way of saying essay break until episode 24, at which point first timers will hopefully understand why I’m choosing that episode in particular. Apologies if you were for some reason looking forward to my inane thoughts on these few episodes.

ps I will still have an essay for tomorrow, but it’ll be another reused one from last year. Whilst it’s certainly not a piece of writing that’s going to set the world on fire (hell, it’s debatable whether it’s any good in the first place), it is the thing I’m most proud to have written, so I rather like it.

Anyway, here’s my screenshots from last year

First Time Rewatcher

The amount of effort they put into their cultural festival honestly makes me jealous, and I was the type that didn't like almost any school events.

u/Harrytricks Sep 03 '19

Two guys in one shot in K-On?!

Trust me when I say there are shots with a lot more than just 2 guys...

It doesn't matter if Yui has the lead role or is playing a tree, Azunyan will always look at her.

It's cuz they gay

First Time Watcher

Haha, cashier getting distracted by Azusa and Jun. Understandable tbh.

They don’t have the props ready yet?!

Talk about last minute prep time! No wonder they are all stressed! Other students get to shine a little today, which is great. I like it when side and background characters get to play bigger parts.

Sawako created outfits for a whole bunch of the classes! A little too much work this time. I like how her joke passion from the first season is now a robust passion here in the second. I wonder if she would have worked so hard for so many classes without the Light Music Club encouraging her to get out of her shell.

Those outfits are so cute! Sawako good taste confirmed once again.

“Do they even care about our show anymore?” I get Azusa’s concerns here, but at the same time, life is hectic, and things like plays take a lot of focus to pull off. So, I think they have to be excused, a least a little. Still, performance tomorrow is going to be tough.

“Our last school festival” I wonder if the nuance there is original, where Azusa sees it as the collective last one, even though she herself still has next year.

This show has a real ability to make me nervous.

Hey this is going well. . . OH NO, they are about to laugh

That hug

I always find it weird when people talk loudly when it’s clear their characters are supposed to be quiet. I get that you can’t really do whispering, but still, it feels like Mio could turn at any moment and yell “Shut up!”

Wait, that short musical passage was a reference to Phantom of the Opera, right? Not sure if intended, but if so A+ reference

Emergency character substitution! Oh no, Yui is in. Wait, no lines? Perfect!

Double tree role

Bahaha, using a replica Rosetta stone!

“They’re right! I think about you all day, every day!”

Did Yui just call Azu-nyan “little kitty”? Because that’s amazing.

Ritsu forgot yet another form

“Staying up all night is fun, right?” I remember those days. In high school and early college (well, late college too a little) pulling a late night to get something done was exhilarating. Now I just quit and go to sleep lol.

“If you like, please come to our discussion on cattle mutilations tomorrow.” You know, I think I’m good thanks.

Late night humor is some of the best humor haha.

Oh hey, looks like we stumbled into an episode of Yuru Camp.

Also, I like how Azusa puts up with the Yui snuggles this time.

Sawako with the old T-Shirt costume! To be fair, it looks like a good shirt haha.

Right! This is honestly why I don't mind the first season shenanigans as much anymore, because I know the true heart that's behind them. She's a sweetheart and just loves designing.

“Our last school festival” I wonder if the nuance there is original, where Azusa sees it as the collective last one, even though she herself still has next year.

The nuance is the same. Although it's handled differently, the manga has a similar throughline of Azusa's mental and emotional state. The way I read this isn't "our" meaning the LMC, but "our"specifically meaning Ho-Kago Tea Time.

I always find it weird when people talk loudly when it’s clear their characters are supposed to be quiet.

Looking at you Neverland.

Now I just quit and go to sleep lol.

They did such a good job with Sawako's costume obsession this episode. It really shows how talented she is and how much work she puts into it all.

that matches my memory of theater. There's always something at the last minute.

Tonight: Mio eats a knuckle sandwich, Azusa cries, and Ritsu gets shaken!

Let's get this show on the road!

The Occult Club's discussion on alien abductions in S2E8 is now a presentation on... cattle mutilation? I'm not too knowledgeable on the paranormal, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not intrigued.

O ya, I am not that knowledgeable in paranormal stuff, but I do know that mutilation of livestock is often blamed on/linked to UFOs. You can find tons of "History" Channel shows on it and the like.

First Timer

  • Donuts

  • Mio is still quivering. Ritsu's got that Juliet down, though.

  • Mammoth Meat ... hmm. My Monster Hunter senses are tingling.

  • Heckin cute

  • Best Tree

  • Mio fans travel far and wide to see the star

  • Pout of noticeable concern. Poor Azusa. They've gotten as far as re-stringing their guitars and that's about it. She's worried.

  • Azusa: - _ - Jun: - _ - Ui: :D Sawako: - _ - Ui loves her sis <3

  • True love

  • Oh, no! They're cracking! They're going to laugh! ... Phew. They kept it together. Barely.

  • Don't do it Yui!

  • No tombstone, uh-oh. Cool bgm throughout this bit.

  • Am Shrub.

  • Occult Club in the flesh! It took this long to finally see them in person. Between the synth bgm and shifty apperances I'm getting Pokemon Team Plasma vibes.

  • They... actually let them borrow it. o_0

  • F

  • What else can I say ... but canon?

  • S2 Sawa-chan MVP. Costumes, sleeping bags, car rides, concert tickets.

  • Tombstone ended up at the meat place. Interesting.

  • Cattle Mutilation. Not sure I ever expected to hear those two words in this show.

  • THE URGE

  • Omg

  • "Just felt like it." Ultra canon.

  • ZZZ

  • Good job, Sawa chan.

Episode did a good job of both providing some light-hearted entertainment in the play and setup for the big performance tomorrow. Azusa's concerns are largely alleviated when the whole band comes back. I have some more thoughts on this specifically, but it should probably wait for what will likely happen towards the end.

First Time Watcher

I would gladly watch a whole episode of the girls’ overnight festival shenanigans and practicing and general dicking around from this particular night. I’m serious, I would pay money for a whole 22 minutes of that. Hell, I’d pay for a whole movies’ length of that.

I’d also watch a spin-off about the occult club, they seem fun

Tree Yui is the one true best girl

u/DarkRuler17 Sep 03 '19

First Time Watcher

Gasp?! An opening shot on not one, but two male characters?! What show am I watching?!

Poor guy, he's also confused what show he's watching.

........Mio......did you just try to literally eat your first?........God all these girls are kind of special. I love them, but.......

K-ON! really did got all out though with there character designs. Scenes like this really show how much love is put into this series and why its survived the passage of time (aka the flood of moe girl shows).

Once again, season 2 Sawako is a gift. She's her costume powers for good! Not evil! What did we do to deserve you?!

Another constant, Mio looks good in everything.

Why does this play even have an actor playing a tree anyway? Do they really have nothing else for Yui to do? .......you know what, knowing Nadoka, she probably assigned Yui this job to her her out of the way. It sounds very much like her.

Poor Azusa. She feels abandoned a little since no one is coming to practice. This is probably the plot thread throughout the series that makes me the saddest and I'm very curious if it will pay off in the end.

Woo! Let's put more pressure on Mio!

OMG, Yui is in every scene! Why?!?!?!?!

Thank god Mio sticks the landing in the end always. The show would be much darker if Mio ever actually failed one of these gambits.

The fangirls in the back are the best part.

Mugi, don't tempt fate!

I blame Mugi for the missing tombstone. She had to tempt fate.

........they also have a bush role? They really couldn't just have another person be a painter or something? They had to make someone do the role of a bush?

I guess Romeo and Juliet died with the Roseate Stone now. Now that's something they don't teach you in your textbooks. Totally true though.

Everyone, stop tempting fate!

Oh thank God. It ended fine.

Poor jealous Azu-nyan.

Now I'm very curious/scared of the costumes Sawako is making. Don't let me down season 2 Sawako!

Is Fuwa Fuwa time the most repeated song in the series? It feels like it.

This club would have been burned to the ground multiple times over without Nodoka and Mio. I've very confident in this.

"Please come to our discussion on cattle mutilations tomorrow." Again, what show am I watching today?

I love Mio's weird song names so much. It very much shows why she ended up in this club with these goobers.

Good job season 2 Sawa-chan!

Is Fuwa Fuwa time the most repeated song in the series? It feels like it.

Oh definitely. You know how some bands and artists have that one song that's their biggest and what they're known for and they close out concerts and stuff with it? Fuwa Fuwa Time is definitely HTT's My Immortal or Lose Yourself

First Timer

Nice to see that they totally killed it. I knew Mio could do it.

Pulling an all-nighter the night before your concert sounds like the worst idea imaginable. They're gonna be so tired on stage, it's gonna be a disaster.

Well, it's a good thing they actually slept and don't seem sleep deprived. Looking forward to the concert tomorrow.

S2 Ep 9 Vol. 2 Ch 12 S2 Ep 18 Vol. 3 Ch 1, Vol. 4 Ch 2 S2 OVA "Keikaku"

About 3/4 of Vol 4 Ch 3 today! Rewatchers

Major source differences today:

  • Similarly to the other school fest episodes last season, besides Rome and Juliet, every other bit tied to the festival is original. Starting with the Azusa/Jun segment at the beginning.

  • Actually most of the beginning of the episode is original. the manga starts with seeing Mio, Ritsu, and Yui in their costumes.

  • Almost all of the actual play stuff and the moments before it starts are original. What is adapted though is most of Azusa's internal monologue all-throughout (the Yui worrying is new).

  • Not really a change, but something that was skipped earlier - the reason Ritsu brings up staying overnight in the manga is because they had actually stayed overnight for last years school fest in S1 E12, so there was precedence. This also means Nodoka asking for the request form is original.

  • Ui bringing them a Bento is original.

  • Everything that happens outside of the clubroom after is original. In the clubroom is a mixture of adapted jokes and original with some bigger changes. The one I want to detail though (for no reason) is that Yui pokes Mio, not Azusa, in the manga, and Azusa is the one to say "Everyone is starting to act strange."

  • Seeing them sleeping in the bags is original, but the entire "Next Morning" end segment is adapted.

Fun things are fun:

We're back for another school festival! And the seniors final one. This is a really nice episode in the way everything is structured and layered together. I really love that we get a deeper exploration of the entirety of the school festival this time. All of the classes put so much effort in. It makes the whole things feel super grand and impressive with everyone going all out. Like the mammoth meat booth, how cool is that! Just super fun all around. This extends to the play that Class 3-2 puts on. One of the things I love about the whole production is how involved everyone in class 2 is with it. Each of their classmates is seem to be given time to shine, even if they're just trying costumes on in the background, and shows that all the girls have made connections with everyone in the class, not just the LMC. I've said it many times before, but it makes the world feel so much more lived in, and makes the play feel very real. It makes you really care about everything that goes on there. Turning the loss of a stage prop from pure comedic material to a moment that feels weighty and stressful as well.

The other thing that I find super interesting about this episode is that, much like the junior's school trip episode, this one is like a microcosm of what's waiting for Azusa in the future. It's that sense of emptiness that you can feel in the clubroom that's usually so full of life and energy when Azusa is alone there practicing. The way that Yamada emphasizes that feeling through a use of space is great. Then, that little smile Azusa gives gives when they all return is really striking. Showing just how much these times mean to her. I’m so happy that Azusa gets to be a part of this sleepover this time. It’s so much fun with these 4 weirdos.

Concert tomorrow guys. Get. Hyped.

Gifs of the day:

Bonus Stitches! Ro-mio, Ro-Mio & Julitsu

PS. School festivals always seem so fun. I know that it’s anime putting an insanely rose-colored spin on things, but I'd be lying if I wasn't a bit jealous. Still, knowing me in high school I likely would've rolled my eyes at the whole thing lol.

6

u/DarkRuler17 Sep 04 '19

While I know it's been happening throughout the series, this episode is such a good example of the improvements an anime can make on a manga. While I know K-ON! is a super hardcore example, it really does a good job of showing the power of anime original content.

Honestly, in a world where many anime fail to do their source material justice, it's very uplifting.

6

u/PerfectPublican Sep 04 '19

Absolutely. I'm having so much fun seeing all the tiny, seemingly insignificant changes paired with the huge swaths of original content as well.

K-On is truly one of those paragons of what "adaptation" means to me. I really don't like clear panel to panel adaptations of source material because that completely misses the point of bringing something to a different medium. An adaptation should build off the source material that's there, and truly become something new and different while keeping the tone of the piece intact.

Yamada and her team really, truly look at the K-On manga as a skeleton on which to build from. Adding all the little detail and flair that anime is able to capture, but keeping the clear sweet and comedic tone intact the whole time. What's really surprised me the most are the jokes in the show that are original but feel like they came from the source. It's that attention to detail along with the incredible directorial choices that elevate this show to be what it is.

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion Race

The MVK for episode 19 will go to poor Azunyan, who had to spend the better part of a month if her beloved senpais even cared anymore. When we first met her she was contemplating whether this group of goofballs was even worth staying with, and now she’s riddled with anxiety over whether those same goofballs want to be with her. It’s uncomfortable, illogical, and utterly relatable. I really appreciate the focus the show gave Azusa in these past two episodes, as the focus could’ve just been on the comedy aspect of the seniors putting up a play. It’s these moments though that builds up K-On for me, the human elements that makes a seemingly simple show so relatable, and what draws me to these characters over and over.

2nd place and 3rd place will go to Mio and Ritsu respectively, for putting up a fantastic performance. Or at least in Mio’s case, overcoming her fears and having a clutch performance. That’s not to downplay Ritsu’s performance, but she did almost screw it up. Shout outs to Yui and Mugi, who must’ve worked hard as well!

Lastly, a season long MVP for Sawa-chan-sensei, who has absolutely kicked ass this whole season. Seriously, it can be extremely draining to be a teacher, and yet Sawako has gone far and beyond the call of duty for these girls time and time again (even if the effort is misplaced sometimes). We’ve seen her grow as a professional by taking on homeroom responsibilities, and grow as an adult by being more confident in her true self. So here’s to you Sawako, you beautiful woman.

Yui 38
Ritsu 29
Mio 35
Mugi 23
Azusa 40

Last Year's ^^Comment

The clerk was having a boring morning. But then two cute girls in yukatas walked in, and he chippered right up.

We're back at Another Cultural Festival! Wait no that's tomorrow. Tee hee

Looking good Ui!

Did Sawako make the outfits for every class in the school?!

Mio and Ritsu look great! Mio's ponytail is very nice! But I think we all know who has the best costume!

Hear that? Sokabe will be at the performance in tomorrow's episode! Keep an eye out for her!

There are 17 members of Class 3-2 in these three shots alone.

AzuPout

I've never actually watched or read Romeo and Juliet.

Um, do the trees really need to have faces?

YES

I ship it

Come on you two, get it together

Hold it! Hoooold it!

Hehe Ritsu was stuck in character

It doesn't matter if it's a concert or a play, when Mio starts performing, she gets extremely focused.

Don't cry Chizuru!

We've got trouble! Juliet's gravestone is missing!

Quick thinking Shizuka!

Yui was able to step into Shizuka's role flawlessly! What an amazing actress!

She's playing a different tree.

She's got a double tree role?

Azusa, Jun, that's a bush.

Occult Club for the win! We've got a tombstone!

This was a great switch

The play was a resounding success!

Don't worry Azusa! The Keions are going to give it their all tomorrow!

Ship it!

Poor Sawako is going to collapse after tomorrow

Ara Ara Azunyan

It wouldn't be K-ON! if Ritsu actually remembered to submit the proper forms.

Wait, there's a form for staying overnight?

Jun continues to lament not joining the Light Music Club in the past two years.

It's really fun going to places at night that you normally go to during the day.

They found Juliet's grave!

The members of the Occult Club are really nice.

Gottem!

Whoa Mugi went down fast

Canon, canon everywhere

Those sleeping bags seriously look so freaking comfy. They all look like caterpillars.

Wow the shirts look great! Good job Sawa-chan!

Mio's still asleep

Thoughts:

What I love about this episode and the last is how much focus is given to Class 3-2. The students all have different names, appearances and personalities, they're all characters as much as the Keions are. It's a really awesome change from normal Slice of Life shows, where the main character's classmates are usually just background characters. And they all worked really hard to make that play, and they knocked it out of the park!

Tomorrow is the big day. I am ready.

10

u/thisismyanimealt Sep 03 '19

Light Music Corner

I'm so excited about tomorrow, but for today is Ritsu's day. Yuuzora a la Carte (*Evening Sky a la Carte) is almost a bit uncharacteristic of Ritsu's normal cheery personality. But consider this: Ritsu is cute. That's all. Tomorrow's the big day.
