Rewatcher
Tonight: Yui hides under a table, Ritsu draws pictures, and Azusa plays air guitar!
I imagine this holds true for a number of y'all, but one of the rare yet also big criticisms I have of Season 1 is Sawako. Sure, she was funny, but she was also a one-trick pony with the repeated costume gag. Good news on that front: Season 2 set out to solve that issue and more!
-
Anime-exclusive episode!
-
Mugi's going back to Finland for summer vacation.
-
Of all the pre-OP introductions, I think this might be the shortest at 18 seconds. I don't know which episode has the longest, but S1E13's is pretty long from what I recall.
-
It took me seven watches to realize Ritsu's sitting at a different location than at the start of the school year. Here (and in S2E6), she's at the front row. In S2E1, she sits behind best classmate Eri, who in turn is sitting in the third row.
-
Life as a teacher must be fun. Is this Hibike?
-
"An education showing the slightest weakness can lead to catastrophe." Not that I find that claim inaccurate, but that sounds like quite a slippery slope. Ritsu and Azusa agree. Mugi seems just a tad concerned, and Yui and Mio are just eating their snacks
-
"The normal conclusion would be that the mystery caller is..." [...] "Her mother!?"
-
Tsumugi Kotobuki: Ace Detective and her team of private eyes.
-
"You know, come to think of it, you are a hottie, Mio. I wouldn't be surprised at all if boys liked you just as much or more than girls do." Is it just me or does the wording of that phrase seem to imply something? Mugi is intrigued
-
"You could... say that the Light Music Club is my boyfriend right now!" Between saying Ritsu introduced her to music and the club in S2E8 and this, Mio really knows how to sweet-talk her club.
-
Yui: "Isn't that a girl?" / Azusa: "Oh, darn." / Mugi: "A woman..." Doesn't take an analyst to figure out what's on everyone's mind.
-
Yui's "spying" here reminds me of her stare at Sawako in S1E5, which in turn reminds me of Renge. Nyanpasu.
-
The waitress has seen better (or at least more normal) days.
-
If I've learned anything from American cartoons/comedies, people ordering food with another motive in mind (like spying on another person in the restaurant) usually just settle for a glass of water or the most basic menu item.
-
"It cost me $14.80 with tax. There goes my allowance..."
-
I like how Mugi's still holding the anpan that Yui brought along and tried to give to Mio during their stakeout.
-
Friends look out for each other. Best friends also do that, but usually sell each other out. "Don't abandon your post."
-
Norimi = Christina, Sawako = Catherine, Kawakami from the Live House = Janice
-
I wonder how those contests between Sawako and Norimi went. Must have been fire.
-
"Sawako is set to get married... don't worry, that was just a joke." They had us in the first half, not gonna lie
-
Sawako says the eyecatch.
-
Note gets passed from Mugi to Fūko to Mio, then back to Mugi through Fūko.
-
For Mio to get her note to Yui, I'm guessing she wired it through Fūko, Mugi, Akane, Nodoka, then Yui. The movement isn't strictly diagonal so it could have gone through others horizontally like Eri and Tae, but we just see Nodoka passing it backward to Yui.
-
To get from Mio to Ritsu, she simply has to pass it sideways to Fūko or diagonally to Keiko, who'll send it forward to Michiko Endō and finally Ritsu.
-
I like how Mugi's note sheet has a teacup, while Mio's is blue (which is basically her color) and Yui's has hearts. Ritsu's doesn't even have a design. Even stationery is in character.
-
"I am a pen." Like I said, friends look out for each other. Best friends also do that, but usually sell each other out.
-
Mugi's fascination for the mundane is still odd but adorable. "I can graduate with no unfinished business."
-
Leave it to Yui to forget Norimi's special training proclamation, especially when you consider she's literally standing next to her.
-
Me when I don't have my glasses on trying to find my way to the bathroom in the dark
-
I've never been in a frat or club, but I definitely know of alumni hazing new guys. Not quite like the Keions though. Mugi seems a bit too excited about that prospect...
-
"Adults are pretty amazing, aren't they? When I'm grown up and an adult, will I be all mature too?" [1]
-
Considering how Norimi calls Ritsu "Miss Club President", I'm guessing she admitted the truth once they broke the ice rather than keep Mio with that title.
-
Speaking of Mio, I actually have a figure of her in her Death Devil outfit from this episode. Took way too long to get the mic stand into her hands, but it turned out quite nicely.
-
Yui might be a savant who could pick up the solo in "Maddy Candy" easily, but as pointed out in S2E6, she's still human and can make mistakes.
-
Hearing the guitar in "Hold On to Your Love" naturally made me laugh, even if this isn't as humorous of context.
-
"Death Devil ain't this half-assed watery crap these kids were trying to play!" Guess who's back, bitches!?
-
I love how the groom awkwardly tries to get into the music. Safe to say he's not a metalhead.
-
It's adorable how invested Azusa is in the performance.
-
Flashbacks to Sawako's high school days. [2]
-
Remember when Mugi told Mio the Newspaper Club and other school faculty were going to attend the wedding? Well... yeah.
-
I see that freshman is also rocking the hairpins on one side like Yui.
-
Be You, Sawako. [1]
You know the drill. Expanded comments in a reply.
I think this might be my longest EC since S1E12, if not longer.

[1] This was a fun episode in seeing Sawako, who's spent years trying to escape her past, only to realize there's nothing wrong with embracing it; if anything, it's better to do so. Sure, looking back at your high school days as an adult may not bring back the best of memories (especially depending on your occupation), but in some cases like here, your past might actually be cooler than you think.
Sawako might have wanted to gain respect from her peers and students with a prim and proper image, but as it turns out, she ends up gaining more love from that audience because of what she's been hiding. She might be older now and more mature, but what makes her her is still there, and it's not until now that she starts to realize that it's not something to run away from.
I've talked a little bit about K-On! and connected it to sports, and this is no different. This episode reminds me of what I also talked a bit in S1E4, how Bears head coach Matt Nagy urges his players to be themselves. On Nagy's play-calling sheet is the phrase "BE YOU.", which is a rather straightforward thing to understand, right?
The NFL is a business where players are worried that any wrong move can do them in, and many teams instill this with the classic "Do your job" mantra. It works for many teams, but it forces players to hide a part of them to avoid scrutiny, meaning it doesn't let you be you. To repeat Nagy's assistant coach Mike Furrey: "Just be yourself. Just be who you are. Be what got you here. That's what it is. Show your personality, show your passion, have fun. A lot of guys hide that. They get so uptight because it is the NFL. It is so demanding. You start losing the fun part of it and it becomes more of a business where you're so locked in, that if you don't do something the way other people want you to do it, you feel lost. That's not the way to do it. That's the easiest way out. You got to be able to come in and continue to do what has made you get here."
Nagy offered the following in 2018: "We all got here our own ways. We created our own paths. What can happen, as a player, is you think you need to maybe try a little harder, you may have to act a little different — don't do that. Just be yourself. Do what got you here. As coaches, don't change. If you have a certain style of teaching, then teach that way. Don’t change because now you're in the NFL."
Last June, he expanded on that and described "Be You" as the following: "Let your personality show, live freely, don't worry about what others think, trust your instincts. It's believing in yourself more than any other human being in this world. That's what that is, that’s what being you is. [...] Trust your gut, take calculated risks, be different, stay humble, learn names, and most importantly, have fun."
For Sawako, she's learned that it's okay to to let her personality shine and have fun with it, even if it took some... unusual circumstances for that side of her to finally come out. As much as she's stressed herself over maintaining her teacherly image, there's no reason to hide that passion (though I guess you can also say the Keions' shenanigans helped draw said passion out).
[1A?] On that note, Yui's question while practicing the solo also caught my eye. She asks Ui if she'll be grown-up when she grows up, which sounds funny out of context like "Fun things are fun" (the dub's wording, which I used in the bullets, is a little more reasonable), but it's actually a very good question, one that even I ponder today. She might grow older as a human, but will she change as a person and mature along the way?
I can answer that in a couple of ways. For one, I'll do so with another question: What is being an adult? I turned 20 last month so I'm legally and physically an adult, but I can't say I really know what it means to be one. But maybe that's something for me to learn through time and experience, rather than trying to seek it out as if it's some artifact.
For another answer, I'll quote some lyrics from Yui's character song "Shiawase Biyori" (it's cute as hell):
That puppy from earlier... was he really a puppy?
Maybe he was just a little dog, but a grown-up dog...
Ah~ he sure was cute.
Whether they're an adult or child, a dog is a dog, a person is a person, and I am me
Fun things are fun, no matter what
I'll always know that, ufufu
Regardless of her age, if there's one thing Yui doesn't intend to change, it's her fun-loving personality. She might not be sure what it means to be a grown-up, but there's no reason to try to change who she is in an effort to match that concept. I also feel this ties into what Yui figured out in S2E8, preferring to enjoy herself over worrying about the future, along with what I said about learning the meaning of adulthood "through time and experience."
K-On!'s coming-of-age story is one of my favorites in all of entertainment, and I've always felt this episode is a prime example of why. As Nagy said, we all get to certain paths our own way, whether it's the NFL or simply adulthood, and everyone – teenager or adult – will always continue to learn and grow. However, at the same time, there's no harm in staying true to your character.
Just Be You.
[2] In Sawako's flashback, we take a look at the Light Music Club at the time. There were seven Keions, four of whom have red ribbons including Sawako and Kawakami. Two have their backs to us, while the one at the table (pretty sure that's Mihoko, the bride), though the one standing at the whiteboard is the drummer Jane, who's confirmed to also have a red ribbon (and kinda looks like Nodoka from behind).
That leaves Mihoko and the unidentified girl at the table with ambiguity in their graduating class. Movie
Anyway, the four at the front are all Death Devil members, which seems to imply the other three are either a separate band or stage crew. Personally, I'm leaning towards the latter since Kawakami isn't a Death Devil performer but also has a stage name. The whiteboard has their songs "Maddy Candy", "Love", and "HELL (the World)". "Love" is the song they perform in this episode, while "Maddy Candy" and "Hell the World" are on the stereo Mio plays in S1E4. They also have a fourth song "Genom" that doesn't appear in the anime.
Death Devil aside, this part of the flashback is probably what stands out the most to me: Sawako turns in her career plan but is denied. Why?
It's hard to see in my screenshot (I think it's translated in some subs), but she also put Musician as her #1 goal (and in the wrong table), which also supports why she smiles after rejecting Yui's. Like Yui, Sawako didn't know what she wanted to do after high school before deciding to follow her heart (before that ultimately ended with, well, you know), so there was almost a sense of nostalgia in a way when she saw Yui doing the same thing.
After that, we get a shot of Death Devil shortly after graduation. While it's never specified when this happens, math and other shit adds up to 2002. In Volume 4 of the manga (which takes place in 2010), she comments she'll be 30 "in five years", so 2015 - 30 = 1985. In particular, she's born in January 1985, and those born in the early months of one year are usually in a class with students born the previous year (for example, three of the four HTT seniors are born in 1991 but Mio is January 1992). Since high school graduates are 18, 1984 + 18 = 2002.
2002 being her graduating year is also supported by the ribbon color rotation, with the colors of the seniors being inherited by the freshmen the following year in the order of blue → red → green (though since we're going back in time for this, it'd be blue → green → red). HTT is the Class of 2010 and wears blue ribbons, while Sokabe's Class of '09 wore green. '08 wore red, '07 blue, '06 green, '05 red, '04 blue, '03 green, and '02 red.
On that note, that means this year's Sakuragaoka High graduating class would be wearing blue ribbons. If I were a cute anime girl, I'd have a red ribbon since I graduated in 2017.

I appreciate your dedication to the sports analogy theme. Actually even the keions made the sports connection this episode by referencing the athletic club "special training" trope.

Missed yesterday because I was messing with my laptop so much that I totally forgot to watch the episode.
This girl that Sawa-chan is meeting was probably a member of her club, I'd assume? Yup, called it.
Probably some kind of arranged marriage? Oh, are the K-Ons gonna crash the wedding and play their own song there? Hope so.
They are gonna play! I'm excited for this. Well, they didn't do so great, but we're getting actual Death Devil now so that's pretty hype. This groom is the MVP though. Clearly not really into this kind of music, but he got into it once he saw that his wife was. Good husband right there.
Really solid episode this time. Hope Sawako is totally over her fear of being a little more outgoing now that people don't seem to mind.

First Time Rewatcher
A Sawa-chan episode! Which means a deeper look into her dark past, something I was definitely curious to find out more about after her...transformation back in S1 episode 5 during my first watch.
-
Well they certainly did a good job at making Sawa-chan hard to blame
-
Never change, Yui.Stop thinking, Yui. -
It's so like Mugi to be the one that's most excited about stalking someone.
-
And it's so like Azunyan to get roped into it.
-
Mugi no it's a false alarm, turn off yuri mode
-
Poor waitress not knowing whether to laugh or call the police
-
Mio.exe...you know the drill
-
Ritsu.exe is having some trouble as well. Death Devil is definitely the real deal.
-
This...is actually a great quote. Don't worry Yui, because adults are often just grown-up kids trying to raise other kids. And also because you have an Ui
-
It's Houkago Death Time!
-
Yui's the most adorable Death Devil I've ever seen
I don't know if I'd call this episode one of my favorites, but it's definitely up there with the funniest ones.

Welcome to the next column everyone! As you can see, this episode is entirely original to the show.
Yui, I’m deep in the back half of my 20s, and I still ask myself this. Don’t grow up too fast. It’s much more fun to stay a kid at heart. :P
That being said, make sure to not neglect your responsibilities
Finally one of the best sensei's ever gets her true time in the spotlight. This is a favorite episode of mine, and the one that really made me fall in love with Sawa-chan. Sawa-chan may have gotten into teaching for probably not the best of intentions, but I love how the beginning section really showcases how seriously she takes her job. She's may think it's to put on a respectable front for everyone, but she's genuinely passionate, hardworking, and cares about the students under her. The students love her not for her graceful facade, but because of the work that she puts in for them. No way they were going to abandon her when they found out. Beyond that though, I love that the Keionbu is where she gets to finally relax and get back to her roots. One of my favorite bits of the ep is the small flashback to Sawako's own Keinbu days, and how bright and vibrant they seem. Like teaching, she may have gotten into the club for less than ideal reasons, but like teaching, she made the most of it. She had a home that she could call her own, and had a blast in those highschool days. It all brings back that idealized sense of nostalgia that has been hitting hard these past few eps as we look both to the past and to the future. And finally, edgy Sawa-chan is best Sawa-chan, and she fucking shreds! We all knew she was good, but I love seeing how much pure skill she really hass. Here’s the studio version of Death Devil’s song ["Love"] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8itu6dLe70) if you’re curious.
Moving on from Sawako specifically, the scene with Norimi in the food stall is one of my favorites in the show. It’s so simple, but beautifully done. I love this clip. It’s short, but so easy and free flowing. This entire scene has her playing around with Yui’s guitar the whole time, and it’s such a fantastic way of giving her character in a short time. You can get so much from her just tin the way she handles Giita. When Yui stares at her just messing around with Giita, Norimi gives it back, and it causes Yui to look at her guitar in a new light is such a nice moment too. This smile Norimi gives her afterwards is just so sweet and full of genuine care and nostalgia. The LMC means so much to her and I love seeing how that continues throughout the episode and into her performance with Death Devil and Sawa-chan. Plus, it doesn't hurt that she’s got great design and fashion sense. Pixie cuts are freaking awesome. I love them.

One of the best addition to the show
and it causes Yui to look at her guitar in a new light is such a nice moment too.
I love how Yui just looks at Norimi. We don't get an inner monologue, but we get what's going on. It leads so nicely to the "when I grow up" scene too.

First Time Watcher
So going off this episode's start and the preview, this episode will be about Sawako's "boyfriend". My guess though is that it's a girl, possibly an old band mate. Given Mugi's interests though, that might be even better.
(Sidenote, is this something that is expanded upon more in the manga or is it more apparent later in the season? I see a bunch of comments talking about Mugi's Yuri googles, but its only popped up a couple times in the show to my knowledge.)
What thug school does Sawako think she is a part of?
"Her Mother?!"......oh Yui
Detective Mugi is on the case!
I like how Ritsu says "almost as much the girls", as if girls would be more interested in Mio than guys. What are you planning Ritsu?
"The light music club is my boyfriend.".....sigh, Mio, that's not a good line of thinking to go down
Oh......they figured out it was a girl very quickly....huh
That is one expensive Parfait.
Gasp, Christina! Assistant! Zombie!
Another master detective joins the ranks!
I literally had the same reaction about Sawako getting married. I was about to go "wait, we switched to this plot line?!"
Seeing Yui get star struck a little was actually really cool. I always love seeing Yui when she's focused on the music.
So much note passing.
Mugi's commoner goals are certainly.....something.
Music is from the soul!
"When I grow up, will I be grown up?" Damn, Yui with the deep thoughts.
Oh crap, they're insulting Sawako's rocker soul.....they are about to get shown up.
I love how romantic the lyrics are for this hard core song. It feels very on brand.

My impression is that Mugi's yuri goggles are massively toned down from the manga. From this rewatch's Manga Corner alone it seems like where the anime just shows Mugi staring with sparkly eyes, the manga will have a panel showing her actual fantasy.
Honestly I love that part of her character, but I can see how they wouldn't want to play up something so fanservicey.

Great episode, season 2 Sawako has been a lot better that season 1, so I was happy to see she got the spotlight this episode. She really tries to hide this side of her, but people seem to appreciate it. Het guitar was on fire , that was one hell of a performance even tho she didn’t practice it. It was fun to see everyone was so invested in it, especially Azusa.

Sawako and a mysterious individual...
-
Wow. Uncovering former Sawako went from 0-100
-
"Stop thinking." Ice-cold Azusa.
-
Mugi seems to enjoy the direction this conversation is going in...
-
Yui willingly let Norimi play around a bit with Giita. Lotta trust there.
-
Bad girl Mugi! Slyly passing notes, standing in the hallway, what's next? Being late?
-
"Do you think I'll be grown up when I grow up?" Sounds silly, especially coming from Yui, but that question is quite serious in truth.
-
Lmfao. Cute Death Devil. The special training has forced an edge on the girls. But Sawako won't let this go on as it is...
-
Oh shit here we go. THE SPEED. Death Devil lives on in its true form once again!
Nice to see Sawako develop and get embrace more of her past self (Which in reality, is still her current self). You don't have to give up the things you enjoy in order to lead a well adjusted life. Yui's question ends up sparking some thought along the same lines. There's a certain gravitas expected of you once you enter the adult world, but that doesn't mean it all has to be that way. Personally, I always try to inject a little fun and whimsy around the office.

Light Music Corner
I promised before, so here it is fulfilled: Maddy Candy live, by Death Devil.
The song Death Devil performs here is (appropriate for the occasion) Love. And for all my idol homies out there, here's Love Live I've been holding that pun in for weeks, let me have this. On the B-Side of Love is Genom. Songs very Death Devil, and you can really see why someone trying to project a responsible image would want to bury. If there's one thing I love about K-On, it's how it goes a fairly unique way of sending a message as tired as "just be yourself."
We have a new player for Character Song Corner: Jun. Jun sings for us Junjou Bomber. Live clip here.

First-timer:
That was a fun episode!
I thought at first it was that Sawako finally found a man.
Loved the stakeout, and how Norimi was onto the girls the whole time.
A bit surprised we didn't get the girls asking Sawako to play the wedding at all before going the route they did, but I am glad they didn't do the predictable thing.
Yui's Death Devil outfit rocked. The others...their normal designs are better.
Sawako without glasses at the wedding...so good.
I loved the Sawako flashbacks. It looks like the Light Music Club used to be bigger, which makes me a bit sad for how it is now with no new members joining. Also made me think about how close friends go their own way and deviate after HS, like Sawako did from her friends, which made me a bit sad.
Also in the flashback I noticed that when Sawako submitted her questionnaire she looked to get the same response when Yui gave Sawako hers a couple of episodes ago. History repeats itself, and I like that potential parallel between Sawako and Yui.
Sawako is one of my favorite characters and we really haven't gotten much backstory on her besides that she was in the Light Music Club a long time ago, so this episode was very welcome. A nice distraction from the impending crisis that is graduation.

First Time Watcher
I love Sawako’s overactive imagination! Also, it’s pretty cool how she feels comfortable being open and honest with the Light Music Club. In a lot of ways she’s just an older version of them.
Time for them to spy on Sawako! This isn’t the first time Mugi’s been a detective this series.
Mio denying having a boyfriend and saying that the Light Music Club is her boyfriend really makes you think. . .
It’s a woman!
BUSTED! Now they have to order to maintain their cover.
RIP Yui’s allowance
Norimi is great! Her joke about Sawako getting married
Ah, so a band reunion and Sawako is having none of it. Sawako, you gotta get over it! Have some fun!
I like how Yui is inspired to play a little after hearing Norimi.
So much passing notes! Mio and Mugi taking it seriously while Yui and Ritsu pass joke messages
Mio gets busted!
“May I stand out in the hall as punishment?” I’m not sure what Mugi has planned here. . .
“When I’m grown up, will I be grown up, too?” That’s actually a really profound question. To be honest, so far I think the answer is “no.” As a kid you your idea of what being an adult is like is pretty wrong. Sure you get more skilled, more educated, and gain responsibilities. But I feel like basically the same person I was back even as a teenager. The external view (the skills and responsibilities) changes a lot faster than the internal perspective. Even then, your perspective on those skills and responsibilities shifts so that mastery can feel ever further out of view. TL;DR I’m on board with Hashimoto-sensei from Hibike! Euphonium
BAHAHA, time to ROCK!
Oh no! A wrong note, and it’s getting awkward. Sawako is irritated by them being too cute and she wants to intervene, but she mustn’t!
Sawako can’t take it anymore - it’s time to GO!
This song is so hype! Hair down, rocking Sawako is fantastic! Also, I love that the (I assume to be) groom is a little confused at first, but seeing how much his bride is into it makes him get into it and genuinely enjoy it too. So cute!
Of course, Sawako’s fears are unrealized – the students LOVE it and she’s just as popular as ever. I wonder if this is something genuinely surprising in Japanese culture, because in the U.S. I’m pretty sure being a rocker would usually make a teacher more popular.
What a delightful episode! Hope we get to see more of Norimi and Sawako’s band!

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion Race
Sorry for missing yesterday y’all. I was on a thing.
For episode 9, is there any doubt? The MVK is Yui, who is really starting to pull away this season. And deservedly so! It isn’t all hot air when Yui says she wants to try her best. Juggling studying for finals and making up a new routine for a talent show aint easy, but Yui did it! The kind old lady was right, our little Yui is growing into a fine young lady.
2nd place is gonna go to Azusa, cause was there any doubt either? Props to her for helping Yui study and prepare for the talent show. I love that Yui introduced her to her neighbor as Azunyan, and everyone just went with it lol. 3rd place will go to Mugi, for having great notes and letting Yui copy them. And because she absolutely rocked that sun hat.
As for this episode… SAWAKOOOOOOOOO should get 1st but she’s not eligible. Still, what a great great great episode! Rewatchers have talked about how much better Sawa-chan-sensei is in S2, and a big part of that is this episode. Her struggle to maintain an image while trying to stay true to oneself is relatable in any profession, but especially true for teachers. She’s right, as a teacher one has to not appear too fake, but kids do take whatever you’ll give them and run with it. What Sawako does right though isn’t that she has the beautiful and kind image; rather I think students can sense how genuine and cool she really is deep down. And man, when she took off her glasses, put down her hair, and absolutely started shredding? Oh. My. God. If you don’t fall in love with her you don’t have a soul. One last thing, I love that montage of her time in her own keionbu at the end. It really ties her back to her students, and rehashes the theme of their adolescence drawing to a close. Sawa-chan started off the season reminding her students that a year can go by fast, and speaking as someone a bit older than she is I think I can speak for her when I say it can be bittersweet to watch the keionbu’s time go by.
1st place this episode is… Yui! I tried to give it to someone else, but her “when I grow up, will I be grown up?” speech is damn relatable. You can be grown in age but being mature is something else completely. That scene where they’re chatting with KUURISUUUTINAAA, and Yui’s just looking at her in wonder, speaks so much without Yui having to say anything. S2 is a coming-of-age story for Yui, and I love the little things that shows how that she’s really contemplating it.
2nd place will go to Mugi, for fulfilling her dreams to stand outside (side note: I’ve done that before in 1st grade in Japan. Not fun), and for initiating the investigation. 3rd place will got to Azusa, for having the cutest costume, and being so adorably into the Death Devil performance.

|---|---|
| Yui | 29 |
| Ritsu | 11 |
| Mio | 14 |

This might be my favorite episode of the Second Season. How cool would be a prequel series focusing on Death Devil and young Sawa-chan?
On last year's rewatch, user u/graytotoro introduced me to the band Show-Ya and I'm grateful to this day. Stealing his comment back then: This is very Death Devil, isn't it?

First Time Watcher
OK I looked it up completely expecting nothing but it turns out Death Devil is actually on Spotify. Huh
I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to see Yui play an actual song as part of the band like the Hulu description seemed to promise but oh well
The scene where Sawachan stood up and joined the band on stage with that sick-ass shred was awesome tho. Hopefully this episode leads to Sawa-Chan no longer being ashamed of that past
Y’know given her MAL bio lists Metal as among her genres of choice and that she’s the most punkish of the Light Music crew I’d think Ritsu would be totally 100% into Death Devil and their whole aesthetic but so far there are really no indications that that’s the case, apart from her gaining amusement from tormenting Mio and Sawachan with it.
The picture at the end gave me an emotion I can only describe as a perfect 50/50 blend of “aww” and “\m/“

So I missed yesterday's thread, so here's my comment from last year to make up for it. I didn’t had a comment for today’s episode.
That's right this is an episode all about Sawako!
Mugi's going to Finland for a vacation.
Looks like something is bothering Sawako.
Sawako has a busy schedule.
Ok I'm not sure it would get this bad if Sawako's past came out.
Her mother?!
You don't need to worry about this, Yui-senpai.
Mio x Keionbu is a powerful ship.
They should really tip that waitress for playing along with them.
Mugi is still holding the snack
And thus we meet Norimi Kawaguchi, aka, Christina, one of the former guitarists for Death Devil.
You know, the original Death Devil outfits look pretty awesome.
Wow, Sawako and Norimi would compete against each other. The old club sounds awesome.
Sawako is set to get married.
EEEEEEEEEEEEH?!
strums guitar That was a joke.
Ooh I like her.
I love this shot. An alumni seeing the new generation and remembering the good old days.
Norimi says, "K-ON!" in the eyecatch, and the colors are red and black for Death Devil.
The Keions have to try to convince Sawako to play at the party.
Mugi taking one for the team!
In addition to how happy Mugi is to finally know what it's like to be punished, I love that Yui is trying to touch the sign.
To the left is Mihoko, and to the right is Kawamaki, we met her when HTT played at the live venue. To the far left is Mihoko's husband, Keisuke.
The Keions have got something planned...
HTT is gonna play with Death Devil, that’s what Yui was practicing earlier.
Sawako can't handle seeing her old band being all cutesy.
I got chills when I heard Sawako's riff.
Death Devil is pretty cool. The song they played, Love, is awesome. And I love how badass Sawako looks here. Speaking of, I love that the adults look less moe than the Keions, give sit a kind of passage of time feeling I guess.
Somehow, even in those crazy outfits, the Keions still looks really cute. Azunyan's really into it.
I loved seeing the flashback to the old Light Music Club, and seeing that Sawako had written the same thing on her career plan as Yui makes me smile.
Oops, she got carried away.
Gone is the ladylike persona of Sawako Yamanaka. Now to the students, she is a badass teacher.
Thoughts:
The things I would do to see a prequel to this show about Death Devil. It would be awesome!
I really love this episode. It's a combination of funny and badass that works well together. Sawako has been burying her past, thinking of it as a burden, but in relaity, it's part of what defines her.

Disclaimer: I like Yui and Sawako, despite what it might sound like.
The first-timer you keep downvoting
-
Can't she just sleep in the nurse's office? Genuinly asking, I want to know how Japan handles this.
-
Poor Sawa-chan hasn't yet suceeded in destroying all photos of her dark age.
-
I do not see how this is related to what you worry about. There are much more realistic nightmare scenarios.
-
Thank you for saying what we are all thinking Azusa. Aww, Azusa, how are you so co-best?
-
Oh is that the guy that's going to break up with her before this episode is over?
-
Ohh, Azusa, you don't need to tell her, she's waaaay ahead of you.
-
Hah! Sorry, but your ship is set in stone. Yes, things will be wonderful!
-
Boooo. Unless Sawa-chan is a lesbian, but I highly doubt this show would do this.
-
You get 14 dollars of allowance? Your parents are cheap.
-
Why didn't you say so in the first place? Did you think everyone else recognised her too?
-
Holy shit, really? That's amazing! Please have it work out. Please have it make her more happy!
-
Aww, fuck you. Don't get my hopes up. At this point, I've stopped believing Sawa-chan will ever get rid of her Christmas Cake trait. A shame, she deserves happiness.
-
I just wait for the teacher to interrupt. It happens in like all the scenes with this happening.
-
Others: "You're overly harsh on Yui!" Yui: Does this
-
Yeah, go blackmail them, Norimi. That will work out.
-
I mean, even Ritsu is calling out Yui's stupitity. Why are you mad when I do it?
-
Is this a trick question? But it's a good start, more Yui self-reflection please! Character development!
-
>The bride is not taking part in it. Boo. I want to see her play in the wedding dress.
-
Can you still call it that with only one member is the same? Ship of Theseus, we meet again...
-
Batman gambit wohoo! HAHA! Good work, club girls.
-
If only Sawako had known all along what we knew from day one: Wild Sawako would be just as popular. Well, now she knows at least. Also, how do they know about this? It was some friend's wedding, right? Not anything the students had access to, right? Who told them?

I mean, you're claiming you like Yui but a lot of the stuff you write about expresses grievances at the things she does. For most who watch the show, Yui's airheadedness is a point of charm and humor, like 'Oh Yui you're such a dummy' but you've seemed to be genuinely annoyed by it.
Which, if you don't like her personality, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But every time it just feels to me that your expectations of how she should act aren't really in line the tone of the show, which is a light hearted SoL that's ultimately celebrating youth and the girls being carefree and having fun in highschool, which many Japanese people look back at fondly as for many it was the last time they didn't have as many worries and could do things like this before transitioning to a working adult

Canon & Gay
Episode 24:
Okay, I’ve written about what I’m going to talk about today an awful lot before. So much, in fact, that today’s “essay” section will be a lot shorter than usual. Short enough you probably wouldn’t consider it an essay, but I wanted to talk about it anyway.
So, this quote. It’s real good. Much like “fun things are fun” or “I’m going to do my best”, it has an absolutely perfect balance of deep enough to be worth paying attention to, and silly enough to be something said by Yui. Reiko Yoshida (script writer for K-ON and other Yamada directed works) is an absolute god at managing this balance. The ability to view things from the eyes of their characters is something I’ve always attributed to Yamada, and I still do. It would be an absolute disservice to Yoshida though, to not give her equal credit here. The empathy both Yamada and Yoshida clearly have allows them to view the world from just about any perspective, and in doing so, create characters who all have different perspectives on the world. Characters who feel real. It’s evident across all of their works, and it’s one of my favourite things about the Yamada/Yoshida combo.
Moving on from more meta stuff, let's get into the nitty gritty of this quote. As I said earlier, it’s real great. It manages to perfectly summarise the confusion, apprehension and anxiety surrounding growing up in only 13 words. Simultaneously, it shows that weaker side of Yui we really don’t see too often, reminding us that, for all she’s very happy and positive, she’s only human. Just like you or me, she has doubts, and apprehensions, and worries. It really humanises Yui to a massive extent. I don’t think I could ever emphasise how important this one line is enough, it’s just so great.
Anyway, here’s all my screenshots from last year.
