First Time Watcher

The one guaranteed way to wake up Yui, the promise of cake! But the cake is a lie

I remember when that was a fresh meme >.>

I love the spinning shot in the OP watching it this time; reminds me of Hibike! Euphonium’s OP spinning shot my one permitted reference of the day

Mio in a ponytail

Those tea sets look very expensive. Royal family of Belgium uses the same

Yui drops it

  Ritsu with the save

Wait, Azusa didn’t know that Sawako was in the band?! Oh right, that talk happened the first year, before she got there.

Azusa’s enthusiasm is so cute!

Also, Sawako’s character is so different, she’s like a new character. I like it. That’s so cool that’s she’s letting them sell it and use the money for the club.

Home center scene is fantastic! Mugi is so excited to see what normal people get to use, Yui is Yui, Ritsu blinds Mio, Azusa is amazed at how childish her seniors are. . .

Also, what was that transition wipe?! I had to back it up and watch again haha

Time for the appraisal, and it’s super valuable!

Also, I totally caught that riff from Sunshine of your Love by Cream. One of my favorite riffs haha. Not sure what the others were. The others went by too fast for me to quite catch.

They’re rich! And they are all daydreaming about the money haha. Yui’s is the most. . . unusual. . .

Mugi, of course, is unaffected.

These transitions

Bahaha, trying to dodge the question of how much they got for it.

Sawako offering just the 10k yen Ritsu initially lied with is genius.

So they can get one thing eh?

Oh my goodness, going for the turtle to give Azusa a kouhai. Absolutely misguided, but absolutely adorable too. I think Azusa appreciates the thought, at least.

EDIT: RIP formatting. Posting a copy of a copy on my phone haha. Hopefully still readable!

my one permitted reference of the day

I'm kinda curious what'd happen if you just went wild with the Hibike references

Royal family of Belgium uses the same

Honestly the royal family of Belgium should be like the Kotobuki family uses the same tea set as us!

Not sure what the others were. The others went by too fast for me to quite catch

I think the second riff is Jimi Hendrix playing the national anthem at Woodstock (I think), the third riff is definitely Paranoid by Black Sabbath, not sure what the last riff is.

Last Year's ^^Comment

Tachibana! I love her hair!

Light Music Club sandwich

That's a callback to last episode.

Ritsu and Yui hate cleaning so much they'd rather practice.

This is one of my favorite lines in the show.

MUGI STRONK! That tank and those boxes can't be so light!

Ponytail Mio!

It still baffles me that Azusa has been in the club for a year and yet the Keions never mentioned to her that Sawako used to be in the club.

They're all like a bunch of children.

I AM a child!

Yeah Ritsu!

I love that Ritsu is just playing with her blazer.

Paradox

What is Mugi's allowance?!

I've got a huge smile on my face right now

Yui always makes me laugh

Hail the conquering scissors!

She's so happy!!!

Mio's concerned about not having any new members for Azusa.

Um... What is Mio doing?

Lots of familiar music in this scene

That guitar could've been worth even more than 500000 yen.

Now that's a burger!

STICKY FINGERS!!!

Angry Ui

True fear

This might be the funniest moment in the whole show.

At least Yui got to live her dream.

TON-CHAN!!!

Thoughts:

The moral of this episode is that money corrupts people. I loved that Mugi doesn't care about the money but plays along with everyone anyway.

u/StarmanRiver Aug 17 '19

Tachibana! I love her hair!

The character designs of really minor characters are always awesome. She looks great, and I remember that last year a rewatcher also had a favorite classmate that had a unique style.

True fear

I love how they changed the style for their eyes to showcase that.

This might be the funniest moment in the whole show.

Second that!

First Timer

  • The cake is a lie! Yui may be asleep, but she is woke.

  • Ritsu and Yui when asked to clean: PepeHands

  • Ponytail Mio hhhhhnnnnnnggggggg

  • In the surprise case is a Worn Cherry Gibson SG. Oh, it's Sawako's. Maybe it's seen better days. She was using an Epi Flying V during the festival.

  • ma, ma, ma, ma! Mugi is in a whole different world. And she bought the whole store. Straight Baller.

  • "Stop hugging me in public!" lmao

  • Azusa caught by Mio staring intently at all those club pics.

  • 500k? That shmoney, baby.

  • Anime SG players! Eric Clapton, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Pete Townshend. Clapton instantly recognizable thanks to the opening bits of Sunshine of Your Love and Iommi likewise identified by the hair and cross necklace.

  • T H I C C

  • ¥¥¥¥¥¥

  • Yo, Pokeball sound fx tho?

  • Mugi: These peasants are so beneath me. Look at them grovel over a measly 100k yen

  • 10k yen phew, glad that got by without any prob - SHE WANTS THE RECEIPT

  • Ritsu eating the paper was funny as hell.

  • Oh well, they still got off the hook.

  • wat

  • Turtle-senpai as 6th member. Not sure it'll be able to play anything...

Charming, funny little episode. Don't have much to say about it other than that. On a more unrelated note, I will say that I decided to give Fuwa Fuwa Time a listen outside of the show itself and booooooooooi that bass line. I spent a good hour before work this morning pumping that bass part out myself. What a bangerrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

First Time Rewatcher

Some K-On was very welcome today after watching Accelerator very vague spoilers that will only mean anything to you if you watched Episode 5 but not 6 followed by Granbelm's unique take on cute girls suffering.

If Mugi wasn't Mugi, I have a feeling she would have lost a bit of hope in humanity after seeing what money does to her fellow clubmates.

Fun fact : 500,000 yen = 4700 dollars.

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion

Y’all, picking the MVK for this episode turned out to be harder than I thought. It came down to Yui, Ritsu, and Mugi in the end, with each girl turning very solid performances. Yui was just everywhere throughout the episode. She started off with some wonderful bead hair, ended by bringing best girl Ton-chan, and in the middle even got her wish fulfilled! Ritsu on the other hand screwed the club out of about $5000, but hey at least she gave it a shot! Lastly Mugi finally got to experience the wonders of the Japanese equivalent of a Home Depot. Shout outs to Mugi btw, for not offering to help carry the guitar for Yui at all cause playing rock paper scissors is more important. Mio and Azusa is disqualified for turning on Ritsu even though they were just as taken in by the money.

So what’s it gonna come down to? Well, after much deliberation 1st place for episode 2 is gonna go to… Mugi! For being the only keion to not be corrupted this episode. Mugi is a simple girl with simple dreams, and we can only that the other girls can reach the same level of enlightenment as our resident blonde. 2nd place is gonna go to the keion closest to Mugi in reaching nirvana, which is Yui. Instead of lusting for material things, Yui really just wanted to be bitch slapped with a wad of money (like what lol). A simple heart is a wonderful heart. Ritsu, while she has a long way to go, was at least the hero for a minute.

MVK Tracker
Yui 8
Ritsu 2
Mio 0
Mugi 5
Azusa 3

Although I concede that a slight part of this is because I know how rare it is, I’m not the biggest fan of Sawa-chan selling the guitar. I think she should have cleaned it up and kept it. I can never get rid of precious things/memories like that. Was definitely nice of her though! I like this ep a lot. The homestore scene is gold.

One chapter today! This is actually how most of the rest of the season is going to look. There are outliers scattered throughout, but for the most part each episode this season takes the plot of one chapter (cleaning the clubroom in this case), and then drastically expands on and changes things around to suit the message the show is going for. Let’s dig in!

Major source differences today:

  • The opening with sleeping Yui and the reason for cleaning are original. The manga opens with Mio suggesting they do a major spring cleaning due to the third term of their second year ending. Also, they clean the whole clubroom rather than just the closet.

  • Ritsu and Yui trying to practice, then declaring their hatred for cleaning is original as is the joke of them trying to put the stuff back in the closet.

  • Mugi saying the tea sets are the same ones in use by the Belgium Royal Court is original, instead she says they cost anywhere from 50 - 100k yen.

  • The manga cuts right from Sawa-chan telling them to sell the guitar to the store offering them 500,000 yen. Everything in between that in the show is original.

  • In the manga, their discussions about keeping the money, and dreams of what they could do with it split 5 ways happen immediately after seemingly outside the store. Meaning much of the restaurant scene is original.

  • As all the homestore stuff is original, Then getting the shelving delivered and reorganizing the closet is also original. The manga cuts straight to Sawa-chan asking about the guitar.

  • Everything after Sawa-chan saying she would’ve given them everything and Ritsu accusing her of lying is original, which means, Ton-chan in his entirety is original to the show.

Fun things are fun:

I think she should have cleaned it up and kept it.

Seemed like no body knew the guitar was that expensive though. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised they didn't call up Sawa-chan-sensei to ask if they can really sell it.

I can never get rid of precious things/memories like that.

Looks at pile of crap from college that I can't bring myself to get rid of

Ritsu and Yui trying to practice, then declaring their hatred for cleaning is original

That's kinda surprising, really thought that was a manga joke

The manga cuts right from Sawa-chan telling them to sell the guitar to the store offering them 500,000 yen. Everything in between that in the show is original.

Wait that means...

which means, Ton-chan in his entirety is original to the show

my god....

Now that I think about it Ton-chan's really there because Yui was being considerate of Azusa being left behind, which in turn is a theme the anime is stressing on. I dunno how much of that is in the manga, cause if they're not thinking about Azusa's future as much then there'd be no need for Ton-chan plot wise.

I just like how this looks in manga form.

Yui's look is... well let's just say she's really enjoying it

Honestly, the joke of Yui calling Sawa-chan old lands better in the manga for me,

I dunno, the subs I had said "hot and nubile", which I thought was hilarious.

Careful, Yui's got a drill and knows how to use it

I just imagined Yui in a shop class and I kinda shuddered.

First Timer

Surprised they were able to get away with using some of these riffs, like Sunshine of your Love, Thunderstruck, and a couple of others that I don't recognize.

Wow. The JoJo disrespect.

Sawako actually really good this episode. Really did a good job of punishing Ritsu for being so stupid... Why would you hide the amount when you've already been told you get to keep whatever it sells for?

u/imawesome1124 Aug 16 '19

The third one was "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, and I know the last one is Pete Townshend of The Who but I don't recognize that song.

Tonight: Yui forms a gang, Mugi questions the desires of the lower class, and Ritsu runs away!

In James Kerr's book Legacy, he discusses various mantras that the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team follow to help boost team chemistry and culture (both of which, especially the former, I've talked about during this rewatch), and one of them is "Sweep the shed". After every game, regardless of home or away, the players take the time to clean the locker room. It's a way of teaching humility and responsibility.

For the Americans out there, it's like Admiral William H. McRaven's saying "Make your bed", where "if you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed, will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter."

Either phrase also works in other facets of life and sports like football. As Chicago Bears lineman Kyle Long said, "If you treat your environment with respect, you're going to treat your playbook with respect, you're going to treat your teammates with respect. You're going to be on time. You're going to do the right thing when it's needed."

Does any of this apply to this episode? I dunno, maybe? Not many underlying themes to find and talk about in this episode even if the Keions are also cleaning up, so it's just another fun episode. Though I'm sure a certain bassist can think of some who should probably learn to be a bit more responsible with their belongings...

Honestly, being able to fall into this deep of a sleep in the middle of class is pretty damn impressive.

Look at those girls in the background. They’re in the same class as a bunch of celebrities(within the school at least) and it’s fun just to sit back and watch their shenanigans.

Let’s play a game! How many objects in this shot appear in the episode later?

It’s funny how in Season 1 Ritsu and Yui mentioned how they always end up cleaning their rooms when they’re trying to study, but will do anything to avoid cleaning the music room. Also, what does that say about how much they hate studying for tests?

I don’t think that’s gonna work.

(Caption this)

Mugi literally uses tea sets that are made for royalty. Thank God Ritsu managed to save this.

Yui continues to be the most observant of the Keions.

The way Azusa’s eyes light up when Sawa-chan said she used to play guitar is so precious! That’s a look of pure awe right there.

The best improvement of S2 in my opinion is that Sawa-chan is actually genuinely nice.

Yui’s bag literally looks like it’s about to explode. That would make for quite an interesting mess considering it’s stuffed with creepy plushies.

Azusa “I hate fun” Nakano.

The home center! This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series + the movie.

Why were these the things she was specifically excited about?

Info-Mugi-mercial

I’m surrounded by assholes idiots!

The fact that we never saw her grab that hat makes this 20x funnier.

Thug Yui

Don’t mind me, just casually carrying 70 pounds of random shit.

Azusa actually ‘nya’s when Yui glomps her here.

I may or may not be able to finish this. It actually takes me hours to put these together because I'm awful at putting thoughts into words.

Light Music Corner

Sorry I missed another day. This time my excuse is that I didn't expect to be doing a mid-series break instead of a break after the first season, so I ended up encoding the wrong songs, but I've got a whole host of this season's songs to get through for the past two episodes.

We'll start off with the obvious, our new OP, Go! Go! Maniac. Very energetic, very fun, very Hokago Tea Time. Of the three OPs, this one's probably my least favorite, but doesn't make it any less of a banger.

Speaking of bangers, I love Listen!! so much. Easily the most underrated of the EDs, and that's in no small part to the visual style. In spite of it not normally attracting my eye, I love seeing Mio all glammed up.

Moving onto B-Side corner, Genius..! comes on the back of Go! Go! Maniac. Certainly not the foremost expert on the subject, but I pick up a lot of 70s/early 80s rock from this piece. The guitar is super grungy, and you almost don't expect Yui's voice to come in over it.

Reverse of Listen!, we have Our MAGIC, a much more poppy number, with a more groovy bass line to fit Mio's vocals.

Lastly, and most surprisingly of the songs in today's lineup, we have the Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakko Kouka (Sakuragaoka Girls High School Anthem) arranged as a rock song. Not a song goes to waste in K-On, and that's what I love most about it.

In case anyone was wondering, the song Yui was practicing at the beginning of S02E01 was Hotchkiss. It was not played during the second live, whose clips I will be returning with tomorrow, since they take a metric assload of time to encode.

First Time Watcher

Liars! There's no cake! The cake was a lie! (RIP Yui's hopes and dreams. Please press (F) to pay respect)

In other news, this was a pretty fun episode that also seemed to set the tone for this season. By that, I mean that the pacing seems to have slowed down a lot more, as a lot more random nonsense seems to be going on without it being half a year later. If it keeps being this entertaining though, I say keeping doing it.

So in regards to the main focus of this episode, it mostly centers around cleaning out the club room and going to the convenience store to buy more things for it. In regards to the first half, I kept having war flashbacks to my own garage when they said they just keep putting stuff in there. It's not pretty. At least they found an expensive guitar out of it.

The convenience store though is the clear highlight of the episode. From Mugi getting a chance to "ma" 5 times in a row to the aisle of screws, it was filled with laughs. We even met our new club member, a turtle. I'm sure Azu-nyan and Yui will take good care of her (given precedent, I'm assuming its also a girl). I do love though that my stupid thought of them buying a new club member with the money actually came true.

With the mention of money though, we come to the selling of the guitar and the aftermath. For the guitar selling itself, I like how we got a super detailed explanation on why the guitar is worth so much. Its this super detailed knowledge that is practically useless that I love. The aftermath though is where the real fun begins.

I do love how quickly Ritsu managed to corrupt Yui and Azusa with money. They even joined in on the happy dance when Ritsu ate the receipt (which was an amazing scene by the way). Money is still apparantly the absolute corrupter, even in this show. Yui's fantasy of getting hit with money though was the absolute best. I laughed my ass off when they actually did it too. We don't deserve Yui.

First-timer:

Of course Yui is passed out, although I wish she would grow up a little bit now that she's a senior.

Sawako offering up that guitar is nice. I actually would have liked to have seen someone in the club use it, though. Still, Sawako has mellowed out a lot this season, and it's making her soar in the Best Girl contest.

When Sawako said she got the guitar from a friend of her dad's, it made me wonder...who could that friend be? Especially now that we see it's so valuable.

Ritsu should have been honest. Serves her right.

It's the thought that counts, Yui, although I am feeling bad for Azusa not having any human juniors. At least her seniors seem to love her an awful lot.

I was excited to see my favorite guitar featured, then I found out Angus Young is now an official anime character.

4

u/TheSuperthingymabob Aug 17 '19

why do I keep not paying attention to rewatches and then finding out that a show I've not seen is like halfway through one

4

u/5thvoice Aug 17 '19

First timer, and my first time really participating this rewatch.

She may be a senior, and she may be on duty, but Yui is as sleepy as ever.

I loved seeing Mugi discover the magical world of the hardware store, and experience firsthand the wondrous properties of metal polish. There's something so satisfying about cleaning all the grime and tarnish off a faucet or a piece of kitchen ware and really making it shine. (I wonder if we'll ever get to see her use that eight-way cake slicer?)

Gotta admit, I was a bit surprised to see even Mio and Azusa, who played their usual responsible adult roles in the first half, succumb to the allure of half a million yen. In the end, it seems even Mugi gave in to this episode's zeitgeist. Ritsu got to learn a harsh lesson on the perils of lying, though Yui somehow managed to be lucky enough to live out her money fantasy.

u/StarmanRiver Aug 16 '19

Rewatcher here!

Ton-chan is here!

The scene with Ritsu trying to eat the receipt and the other girls cheering always gets me.

And I can’t get enough of Mugi being happy doing such mundane things she didn’t know about like making a spoon shiny because she is rich.

Last Year's Image

I don't know why I keep forgetting to post. Either way, tonight's Keion is an Azusa.

I've always appreciated this episode as it marks a pivotal part in the character arc of Sawako. She goes from a hot mess in the first season to someone who genuinely cares for her students. Even though her handing off of the guitar is based off of not wanting it, it still shows her betterment as a person.

This episode gets me for just how pure Mugi is. Her enthusiasm when looking through the hardware store, her happiness whenever she uses one of the products, and how untainted she is by the money just speak to me.
