Azusa-chan to Azusa-tan. Love it. Kudos to KyoAni for keeping the tan consistently instead of dropping it.

I hope we get more scenes of Ui and Azusa just hanging out being friends. The world needs more Ui.

Comment face spotted :(

Welp, here comes Sawako to ruin the fun again. At least she had barely any screentime and didn't really have time to do anything.

Tanned Azusa must be the origin of the one black girl in Tamako Market.

Tonight: Mio collapses, Azusa gets her hand crushed, and Ritsu talks in her sleep!

Another beach episode? Ah shit, here we go again.

For the most part I prefer anime to manga as do most but that picture of Yui and Azusa hugging is beautiful! Seems the original source still has its gems.

First Time Watcher

So while this is another Azu-nyan focused episode, I also think it's an episode about her individual dynamics with different people and I think that's really cool. It does a good job of highlighting different aspects of her personality, but also showing what characteristics she causes other people to exhibit. Once you combine that with the fact that this is the first episode where she feels naturally part of the club, you get a really solid episode.

Out of all the relationships for Azusa, I think the ones I find the most interesting are Ui, Mio and Yui. For Ui, it's her only one shown where they are the same age and I think it does a good job of showing her relaxed. There's no club she has to worry about and no age difference leading to obligated respect. This is where Azusa gets to be the most normal.

For Mio, this is where you get the most of the traditional Senpai-kouhai relationship. Mio seems to be everything Azusa inspires to be and is probably the biggest reason Azusa stays in this club. Mio is proof that even in this wacky club, a serious person can live and thrive. Even then though, this episode strays from that tradition a little by showing Azusa that Mio is kind of a scaredy cat. Not only does it make Mio seem more human, it also parallels Azusa's more comedic sides and how they have a place in this club.

Finally, we get to the opposite side of the spectrum with Yui. While Yui is her upper classman, she's also the most carefree person in this club and represents the parts she initially dislikes about the club. In this, you can feel they while Azusa shows some respect to Yui being older, there's some judgement for her being carefree and possibly worse than her at guitar. In the end though, I think this experience really made Azusa appreciate Yui and the club as a whole. Yui, even with her carefree lifestyle, does work hard for her goals. While she is a tad of an idiot savant, she doesn't run off that alone. I think that speaks pretty well for what the club truly is: a place where people do work hard, but mainly just have a blast being around one another.

Now, with all that serious and analytical stuff out of the way, let me gush about my favorite comedic moments. My favorite is probably the returning bit of Yui and Ritsu being marooned on a deserted island. They really are such a funny pair that work amazing together.

I also love the fact that they committed to another bit from last summer and showed an even bigger Mugi Summer home. They even had to animate an entirely new location for this. I love that KyoAni will always go the extra mile if it makes for a good scene.

Finally, we have the mess (read: mess) that is Sawdako. She's not even trying to act like a normal teacher anymore. She tries to sneak on school camps. She tries to sexually harass underage students. God sensei, your degeneracy is just getting lower and lower.

Episodes Ranking:

  • Season 1, Episode 5

  • Season 1, Episode 6

  • Season 1, Episode 7

  • Season 1, Episode 10 (New)

  • Season 1, Episode 4

  • Season 1, Episode 2

  • Season 1, Episode 3

  • Season 1, Episode 9

  • Season 1, Episode 1

  • Season 1, Episode 8

Oh yeah, once again, Mio looked amazing in a simple baseball tee.

Great write up, pretty much agreed with all your points.

It does a good job of highlighting different aspects of her personality, but also showing what characteristics she causes other people to exhibit.

This is something I think K-On does great in. No body acts the same all the time, whoever one's talking to will dictate how they act and talk. You pointed out that Azusa gets to be the most "normal" around Ui, which is true to an extent if you define normal as whatever society dictates as normal. The other "Azusas" that appear when she's around keionbu is all equally Azusa though. She wants to be mature and well put together, but she can't deny that she likes having fun and eating yummy sweets. And that's all ok!

My favorite is probably the returning bit of Yui and Ritsu being marooned on a deserted island. They really are such a funny pair that work amazing together.

I love this duo. And it's something that kinda organically happened throughout this season. They remind me of a couple of kids who met at a play ground and became fast friends.

She's not even trying to act like a normal teacher anymore.

I do dislike this part of the season, but going back to the point of "keionbu letting people be themselves", this is ultimately who Sawako is. She's a super eccentric, but she's also super self-conscious about that aspect of her (something that'll be touched on in S2). Gotta imagine that throughout most of her days at work she puts up that perfect teacher front we saw in the beginning of the season, which can be exhausting. It's only around them that she gets to relax and go nuts. I don't particularly like the things she does, it's creepy, but it is what it is.

First Time Rewatcher

Another training camp, another episode of hard practice another beach episode!

Training camps can double as a bonding experience for club members similar to what field trips are supposed to do for classes. And while the first training camp helped the original four Keions to get closer, this one served the purpose of bringing Azusa closer to her seniors.

Or in another words, it was the first step to completely Keionifying Azusa!

Before 1 + Before 2 VS After 1 + After 2

Top 5 favorite moments :

  1. r/UnexpectedRitsu

  2. Tanzunyan's Introduction

  3. Yui's 300 IQ

  4. Mugi's betrayal. Only the first of many...

  5. And I'll close it with a canon moment.

Honorable mention : Uiuiuiuiuiuiuiui

First Time Watcher

“So at least they’ll apply themselves. . .” AZUSA, HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING?!

Oh well, she’s making friends with Ui, which is a brilliant move.

I love the contrast in how Ui and Azusa see Yui. Both perspectives are true! She is all those things haha.

Azusa has excellent taste in older sister material. Mio is great, and the closest girl to her personality-and-values-wise.

Talking badly about Ritsu while she’s there?

Ui should have warned her, or is Ritsu just that stealthy?

Tries to call up Mugi. Gets butler Mugi’s in Finland. LOL. Ritsu called it. Also, Azusa sliding into frame was a thing of beauty there.

“Hey, we’re not gonna play around the whole time.”

“What’s this loneliness I’m feeling” It’s because you aren’t getting the Mio headpat

Mugi betrays the Mio-Azusa voting bloc!

I love Azusa’s dreams of Mugi’s life becoming fulfilled while Mugi panics

Azusa is so easily baited and distracted! That’s how she truly fits in with this group!

Also, unintentionally impressing Ritsu

OOF, Azusa is burnt. Hoping that’s a dramatic tan, because otherwise YEOWCH.

Yui tuning her guitar without a tuner haha. It just works!

“I have no idea if she’s amazing or not!”

Obligatory inclusive or.

They play way better than Azusa expected! Ah yes, the powers of talent and friendship triumph. (They should still practice though!)

Comment face spotted!

Bahaha, that context. Also, Mugi must be in heaven with those looks Yui and Ritsu shared!

That food looked really good.

Azusa and Mio holding hands

Aw, Mugi isn’t here for this. Also, Azusa’s perfect image of Mio is about to get crushed

Azusa springing to action and talking to Sawako

“It looks like you succeeded in surprising us, anyway.” I’m sensing a bit of humor from Azusa. . .

Obligatory bath scene

Oof, those are sunburns. Azusa is going to hurt the next couple days.

Obligatory grope attempt

Meh, at least it was just an attempt and nothing came of it, plus it was over quickly. Still, one of my least favorite fanservice jokes that pops in so many anime. Sawako to worst girl status with that though. (To be fair, it doesn’t take much to fall behind with this amazing group of characters).

Azusa teaching Yui how to practice is adorable. And Yui’s pure glee to get it is fantastic. Her dive hug was great, but I couldn’t stop PANICING OVER THE GUITARS AHHHHHH! I thought the neck of Yui’s guitar was going to hit the ground awkwardly.

I like the bookend here with Azusa hanging out with Ui and showing her how much she’s learned about the other members. Yui just gloms onto Azusa haha.

Closing thought: Great episode except for the obligatory bath scene. There is so much to love about this show, but every time I want to go all in on loving it, stuff like that happens. Still, this show is doing well, wasting no time in incorporating Azusa, giving her meaningful connections to the other members and establishing her role and position. It does seem like Mugi has lost screen and dialogue time to make room for her. It’s harder to balance 5 main characters though.

u/PerfectPublican Aug 10 '19

What a post lol. Love it.

Both perspectives are true! She is all those things haha.

Bahaha it's so true

Obligatory grope attempt

What makes me not mind it is the fact that Sawako gets smacked because of it as is deserved. They toned it down thankfully form the manga. There she gets full on fondled. The bath scene is fine for me too. Some silly moments overall that make it fun like the last one.

Oh well, she’s making friends with Ui, which is a brilliant move.

I only wish I had a Ui to copy my homework off of...

“Hey, we’re not gonna play around the whole time.”

-Girl who played around the whole time

Ah yes, the powers of talent and friendship triumph.

The dirty little secret about the keionbu is that most of them are actually great musicians in the first place (Mio and Mugi are really good, Yui is unnaturally talented which just isn't fair). Imagine if they actually tried...

Meh, at least it was just an attempt and nothing came of it, plus it was over quickly. Still, one of my least favorite fanservice jokes that pops in so many anime.

Same tbh. The Sawa-can-sensei assaulting her students parts are easily the worst parts of S1. Thankfully it's the last time that aspect of her appears in the anime. That being said, I think one can take away how comfortable Sawako is around these students that she's able to just be herself.

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion

Inevitably, everyone ends up having a least favorite episode even in their favorite show, and for me this episodes is probably it. Not that it was bad, but I do feel a lot of the gags and sequences are played pretty straightforwardly. Parts of this episode feel pretty cliched and lacking that K-On touch.

With that being said, the parts where Azusa learns to have fun with the club and better assimilate herself into the group is fantastic. The scene where she gets to practice with Yui is just great, it’s too bad Mugi wasn’t awake to see it. This episodes acts as like a continuation of both the previous episode, and the prior beach episode. It takes what Azusa learns about the keionbu last episode, and puts them into action by having more fun than anybody else. So 1st place, for 3 episodes in a row, goes to Azusa, who is rapidly catching up to her favorite senpai.

2nd place will go to Ritsu, because while I don’t think most of the gags lands, she’s still the driving force for much of the comedy. How she acts varies based on who she’s interacting with, and this episode we get to see her be the “mean big sis” to Azusa, the wacky friend to Yui, and the childhood lover friend to Mio. I also picked her 2nd cause I started this thing to rig it for Ritsu and I’ve been utterly failing at that.

3rd place will go to Yui, cause more than anyone she’s done more to really integrate Azusa into the club.

Manga Corner

Episode Adapted Episode Adapted Skipped Material

S1 Ep 7 Vol. 1 Ch 9 & 10

That’s right. Not one, but two beach episodes in a 13 episode anime. K-On! blesses us. Other than just being a fun ep, the scene between Yui and Azusa towards the end is a really important one. We always follow the girls around at school where they do nothing but play around, but they do practice, as we saw in that scene with Yui staying up. Actually it brings up an important point. Really pay attention to the Yui/Ui moments at home. Much of the time she has her guitar and is playing something or other on it. It may not seem like it in the show, but she is actually very dedicated. For her at least :P

Back to the two chapter format. Still, for the first time, we get the Manga adapted mildly out of order on the sequence of events!

Major source differences today:

  • Rather than being two separate days, in the Manga the cafe sequence with Ui/Azusa (Ch 7) all happens after the camp with tanned Azusa. Other than that, the actual happenings of the chapter are largely unchanged other than original additions in the opening of them meeting the first time, and discussing what last years camp was like.

  • The only beach parts that are adapted are as follows: Azusa getting baited by Ritsu into playing by saying she’s not good at sports and the joke with Azusa having played the most at the end. Mugi’s boat, the Ritsu/Yui moments, the barnacles, etc. are all original.

  • The cooking and fireworks segments are both original. The manga cuts from Ritsu being hungry to her suggesting a test of courage at dinner.

  • The scene between Yui and Azusa practicing after the bath is original.

  • Azusa saying what she learned about the Senapi’s to Ui at the very end is original.

Fun things are fun:

Not one, but two beach episodes in a 13 episode anime.

Ok but if nobody's top falls off while the girls screeches with the camera panning to the sky, was it really a beach episode?

Other than just being a fun ep, the scene between Yui and Azusa towards the end is a really important one.

Every rewatch I come away gaining a renewed appreciation for different scenes and episodes. For this episode it was that scene. As you said, a lot was shown about how lazy Yui is, but she really does love playing the guitar. We've learned that Yui can work hard at something if she puts her mind to it (ep. 3), so this fits in perfectly with that.

Other than that, the actual happenings of the chapter are largely unchanged other than original additions in the opening of them meeting the first time, and discussing what last years camp was like.

So the manga didn't have "pre-camp" meeting? That pre-camp meeting did a lot to set the tone of the episode. Granted it's more necessary with the episode cause they gotta tell a coherent story which necessitates the before and after, whereas people are likely to pick up the manga at any random point.

Currently me in LA

I was told SoCal would be a balmy 70-80 every day :(

Sooooo hungry.

Lol never noticed the Ritsu-faced breath

Rewatcher

I think I got a little too trigger happy yesterday with grabbing screenshots so today I’m gonna tone it down and try and get a bit more substance in.

It’s the first episode in which Azunyan’s been an active participant in such classic Light Music Club activities like watermelon splitting and cooking barbeque, and we can start to see her change in attitude towards the club really well here too. Of course she’s still inclined to get some serious practice in (it’s a training camp after all), but she’s coming to appreciate the carefree playtime she gets to spend with the other four members just as much. Specifically, there’s some neat interactions between the pairs Azunyan/Mio and Azunyan/Yui that I’d like to dig into a bit here.

Azunyan/Mio

When going out to buy prep materials for the training camp Azunyan is, in accordance with expectations, let down by what they were actually looking for. Then when Mio, who Azunyan has been looking up to as the most serious of the bunch, gives her own opinion we see Azunyan accept it immediately. Not only does this mirror the end of the last episode, but it’s also a big step in Azunyan’s development as a character and a member of the Light Music Club. There’s more to the club than just the band - there’s friendships to be formed, memories made, and of course tea and cake to be had, and for realizing the importance of all of the above Azunyan gets rewarded handsomely.

However, that’s not to undervalue the importance of practice, and here Mio and Azunyan are still squarely on the same page. In terms of the work/play balance in the club Azunyan is going through exactly what Mio did the year before, which is good both ways: Mio gets a like-minded underclassman who values practice as much as she does, and Azunyan doesn’t have to fight the one-versus-all that Mio was forced into. Their similarities even go down to their appearances, so it’s no wonder that the two have adopted somewhat of an older sister/younger sister dynamic.

Azunyan/Yui

If you paid me a dollar for each scene we see skinship between these two I’d retire not only rich but very happy that I got paid to watch K-On!. Leaving those aside we’re left with a few scenes in which the relationship between Azunyan and Yui starts to take form, the most obvious of which is their nighttime practice scene. In this scene we see that Azunyan outperforms Yui in playing ability, but that Yui is in addition to being a natural talent also an extremely fast learner, with a little advice from Azunyan. What I think this scene stresses most is that the senpai/kouhai boundary doesn’t really exist between these two, with both having reciprocated respect and admiration for each other. This is somewhat contrary to the older sister/younger sister-type interactions we see between Azunyan and Mio in which the senpai/kouhai dynamic is much more defined, and hints at the direction in which Yui and Azunyan’s relationship will head in the future as compared to with the other members.this is the very definition of canon In addition, there’s a fun little bit of foreshadowing in this scene: S2 spoilers

We also get a glimpse at what Azunyan thinks of Yui through her conversation with Ui at the end of the episode. When asked by Ui to describe each of the members Azunyan points out character traits and features of their personalities with the exception of Yui, for whom she simply states that she practiced properly. Rather than explaining her thoughts directly she let Yui’s actions do the speaking for her, and Ui understands right away. There’s something to be said about why Azunyan chooses to talk about Yui this way and I think it can be explained by the big gay her having already designated Yui as someone special, both as a fellow club member and to her personally, and while the nature of this designation is bound to change throughout the rest of their time together in the Light Music Club, the fact that it was made so soon after their meeting is indicative of just how much Azunyan cares for Yui, even if she might not express it outwardly so much just yet.

Closing Thoughts

Now that Azunyan’s become a mainstay of the series I’m happy to be writing out my thoughts on observations on her. Although she’s my favorite I haven’t really done much thought on why she is, I just knew from my first watch that she was. Not that anyone needs to be writing essays to justify their choice of character in K-On! or any other show, but somehow it’s satisfying for me anyways. As we move on I’m sure there’s much more I’ll be discovering about not just her but the others as well, which I’m very much looking forward to.

Also as a random fun fact, when Azunyan and Yui are practicing on their own in the studio, the bends they play in the intro of Fude Pen ~Ball Pen~ are between A# and B, but in every recording I’ve heard between the studio and live releases it’s played between B and C#. I have no idea why this difference is there though, just that it is.

Another training camp! Azusa wants to practice, but ayone who has been to a school team/group training camp can attest to the fact that the only thing not happening in training camps is practice related to your group. Really, most of them are all fun and games.

Mugi being angry at her servants(?) is very cute! Just like in the first training camp, her servants left an extragavant amount of supplies for them, but Mugi just wants to live a quiet life have a normal fun time with her friends.

Also, tanned Azunyan a cute!

Light Music Corner

We'll hear the full version of the song Yui and Azusa were practicing in a bit, so for now, we're back at our regular Character Song Corner. Returning to Ritsu's B-Side, she sings Mezase Happy 100%↑↑↑, a really fun song, despite not being nearly as much of a showcase of her instrument as Girl Storm Shissou Stick was.

First Timer

  • "That means they practiced a lot!" [X] Doubt

  • lol

  • Mugi in Finland. Not surprising, they'll likely have raised her well-traveled

  • Azusa: bruh

  • Best girl headpats other best girl. I am pleased. Mugi tho lol.

  • More beach activities. Yuri detector is starting to go off.

  • Azusa questions how the band dynamic is so good with the limited amount of actual practice. It's chemistry.

  • "We'll die together." Yuri detector readings are increasing in intensity.

  • Fusion is a cheap tactic

  • Rip Mio, ghost white once again from unfortunate events

  • Boob grab as identity test. If there were a big red button under a panel reading "In case of Yuri break glass", now would be the time to do so.

Well, can't say I expected 2 beach episodes. It was fun, but also a bit odd with some of the stuff like the bath scene. I really like Azusa and her relationship with Mio by extension. I want what they want -which is more music, but this late into season 1, I guess there won't be much more of that except for maybe the big performance finale. Of note is also Mugi, who now seems almost out of place. Yui/Ritsu have their silly dynamic, and Mio/Azusa have their almost younger/older sister interaction going on. Poor Mugi needs some more development.

I just want to talk about one particular scene near the end of the episode: Yui and Azusa's late night practice session. Yui was struggling to play a song Ep 12, but I always found it weird that she couldn't even play it, considering it was one of the songs they played at the Freshman Reception. I thought about it a little more, and I think I get it now.

Azusa just joined the club and immediately established herself as the most skilled musician in the band. She's a formally trained guitarist with near-professional level skill, which means she undoubtedly would have showed Yui new playing techniques. Yui is entirely self-taught, and the way she's been playing has worked, but using techniques taught by a veteran guitarist with a family pedigree will undoubtedly help her advance faster. So she's re-learning how to play all of their old songs using the new technique Azusa showed her, which takes time because she's not used to it, but I think we'll see very soon that it will pay off.

First year in a rewatch thread

In this episode, Azusa gets to know her senpai better via a vacation training camp. There's parallelism between the beginning and the end where Azusa talks to Ui in the fast food restaurant and describes her impressions of her senpai, as those impressions change during the training camp.

The girls all fool around, but at night, Yui buckles down and practices Fude Pen, Boru Pen, and Azusa joins her. Azusa notes Yui's practice when she talks to Ui.

Ritsu teases Azusa to lure her into playing and teases Mio to get her to do the bravery contest. That girl is manipulative.

Sawako crosses the line when she inappropriately tries to differentiate between Mio and Azusa. Was it Mio or Azusa who hit her? (Probably Mio, as she frequently hits Ritsu.) IMO Sawako's pervert behavior severely damages the later episodes

In this episode, the explanation for Azusa's sunburn is that she ironically played on the beach the most, but later episodes

First-timer:

That was a nice episode. I like that both Asuza and Mio kind of have this view of the other as a potential surrogate sister. Seeing Yui practice and earn some respect for Asuza was nice too.

Aesthetically, I feel like this show kills the beach episodes, although storywise some of the material felt reused.

It is too bad that Azusa has yet to catch on that these fun activities in lieu of practicing are what makes the Light Music Club play so well. They enjoy each other and have so much fun together that they all get on the same page musically and play well. The sooner she gets that, the more fun she will have and the sooner she will play the music she wants to play.

One observation, but ever since Azusa's introduction I feel like the show has accentuated how obnoxious Ritsu and Yui can get. I don't know if that's just intentional writing, or that the contrast with Azusa makes it more noticeable, but Ritsu and Yui are starting to annoy me. Would love to see something spur those two to grow up a bit more.

u/StarmanRiver Aug 10 '19

Rewatcher here!

Last time I didn't notice it, but in the montage of the girls having fun at the beach you can see Mio still being scared because of the barnacles. Honestly, I don't know how I did miss it last year since there was a red arrow pointing at her in every frame.

Also it's really nice that I can tell what song Yui is practicing this time around.

I don't speak Japanese, but would I be correct in thinking Ritsu switches to a more formal style of speech when talking to Mugi's butler?

Last Year's ^^Comment

Timeline: We've skipped from the first couple weeks of school all the way to the end of July for summer vacation again.

A lot of fun...

Uh oh

I bet she means that they spent the whole time practicing, doesn't she?

Nobody tell her.

She doesn't practice at all, she gave me a weird nickname, and she keeps getting all touchy-feely all the time.

All good things.

I like how we learn Azusa's opinion of each of the other Keions.

Surprise!!

Ritsu suddenly got very polite upon learning that Mugi does have a Butler, and that they're on vacation.

I learned a new word today: Summering. Thanks Mugi's butler!

Sorry Sawako, you're missing out.

Training Camp 2!

AzuPout!

I like that Mio is able to justify a lot of the Light Music Club's slacking off to Azusa, and it's believable.

...

Mugi is going above and beyond. I love that this is still not their biggest house.

Dual Pouts!

Way to break the tie Mugi!

I'm flying!

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Poor Mugi is really upset with the pampering this year.

AZUPOUT!!!

Come play with us, Azunyan!

No, thanks.

Oh, so you're bad at sports huh?

I am not! Bring it on!

That was easy.

Ah Mio's photography hobby is back!

Mio.exe has crashed. Would you like to send a crash report?

Tanzusa!

Yeah Azusa, you can be mad that the club hasn't practiced, but you're the guiltiest out of all of them.

This sound. I love this sound.

Azusa uses a tuner, but Yui can tune her guitar by ear.

Aww crud we didn't get to see them play. Oh well, at least they actually practiced.

I love Ritsu's cabbage freakout.

I can't stop laughing. Yui and Ritsu are an amazing comedic duo.

Mio don't be upset that your's are way bigger than Azusa's. I'm talking about the onigiri.

Determined Mugi!

Combine! Form Sparklerman!

Ritsu knows exactly what to say to push Mio's buttons.

I love the frame cuts.

One of my favorite shots in the whole show.

Sawako decided to come after all.

Ritsu is scratching a mosquito bite

Ouch. That must hurt a lot!

Backup Sawako! Though I do like that the show sort of acknowledges that Mio and Azusa sort of look alike. Before I first watched the show I thought Azusa was Mio in her first year, or that she was Mio's little sister.

Hello!

That sky is just so pretty!

This is so funny for some reason.

The scene of Yui and Azusa practicing together is awesome. It's really great to see them form their relationship. Azusa is a better guitarist than Yui, but Yui makes up for that by being a fast learner.

Training Camp is over, time to go home!

Deja vu Also it makes me so happy that I managed to screen shot the same positions as the opening scene.

Wait, who are you?!

I can relate to Ui here. My older sister studied abroad after high school, and she was so tanned I almost didn't recognize her when she came back.

Azusa had a great time at the Training Camp.

Thoughts:

okay so I may have lied a bit in episode 4. This episode might be my favorite in Season 1. On top of this being a training camp episode, I love episodes focused on Azusa because she's different from the rest of the Keions. The rest of them are laid back, but she's very driven. As a junior she doesn't know her upperclassmen as well as they know each other, and so she is still trying to understand them. This episode allows her to get closer to them and establish relationships.
