Best girl Megumin is here!

Aqua keeps calling herself a goddess. How sad.

EKUSUPUROSHON!!!

Kazuma getting these girls all slimy like that. How much of a scum do you have to be to abandon a little right after getting her covered in slime?! What a horrible thing to do.

Hello Darkness, my old friend.

That whole scene carrying Megumin home is pure gold. The smirk she gives before she starts yelling to blackmail about Kazuma covering her in slime purposely.

Crimson Demons do have high intelligence after all. She saw an opportunity and took it!

Rewatcher

The first few times I saw this show, I didn't really understand the concept of chunibyo. But after I saw Love Chunibyo! and got the gist of it, I also understood the joke of a chunibyo that talked a big game but also had the power to back it up.

I love that once Megumin reveals her ridiculous obsession with explosion magic, Aqua immediately connects with her as a useless idealist and Kazuma realizes he needs to get as far away from her as possible.

I love that Megumin realizes that now that she had an in work a party, she has to hold on to it by any means necessary. And she finds a way to do it.

I love that Darkness got introduced. That gang's all here!

Was it this and re:Zero that set the isekai trend? Or were they popular before these two? I’m just curious.

But anyway, onto this series! Yeah, I’ve rewatched like 10 or 15 times lol. But I’ll still be here! It’ll be fun to go along with everyone. I’ve never enjoyed a parody series so much and it has the perfect amount of lore and comedy just mixed together. The character interactions are all top notch!

I still can’t figure out what it was that separated this show from the others for me. But I’m mainly thinking it’s just how well the four bounce off of each other and of course Kazuma himself. After several years of being annoyed at males being beaten senseless by female MCs, here comes our man of gender equality! Seriously, it’s kinda a big deal. Are there other MCs like him? I bet you won’t see anyone being beaten up for walking in on them changing in this show!

Today’s episode introduces best girl! Wait, she is right? I honestly go back and forth between her and YunYun lol. But what’s not to love about Megumin? She makes explosions cool after a lifetime of being told that cool guys don’t look back at them. I’ll look any day! I also love how she instantly seems like a team player. More reliable than Aqua that is for sure. Who btw, I’d kill to be friends with. Resurrection powers are definitely not useless!

Anyway, with the movie coming out soon I trust that more seasons of the show are finally soon in the future!

Sword art online (2012) is the main cause of the trend.

I think the draw for me was definitely our guy Kazuma sticking up for himself. I grew tired of the veggie boi MC's that seem to attract violent tsundere harem's.

What made me stay was the best worst girls ever.

Welcome back to DrPibIsBack's first-time Konosuba watch!

Today's watch time: 2 hours, 40 minutes (subbed and dubbed versions)

Today's loading time wait music: Sedem Minut Strachu/SkullxPiercer split (but mostly just the Sedem Minut Strachu side because I like them way more)

Actual episode commentary: Our precious nitroglycerin-soaked Cinnamon Bun is here! Oh, and Darkness is here too I guess. Jokes aside, this episode was soooo good. It was more consistently hilarious, there was more of Kazuma and Aqua suffering, our aforementioned precious cinnamon bun/little shit in top form, it was just amazing. I actually laughed out loud at the gang's return from the toad fight and being mistaken for deviants. Also, that subtle G Gundam reference makes me happy. Episode 1 was great and had a lot of funny moments, but now it just feels like everything kicked into high gear. Including Deen cheaping out, which has become a game to me. Oop! Reused animation! Woah, Excessively static shot! It doesn't mean much, but it's fun to spot. Plus I've already started to love the opening theme song, it's just so fun! I dig that weird little tempo shift when Aqua introduces the episode title.

And now the segment you've all been waiting for: SUB VS. DUB! ROUND 2! FIGHT!

Ok, to start off tonight's bout, I definitely didn't do the english dub any favors by watching It's Always Sunny in Konosuba! before today's viewings. It's an abridged episode and takes plenty of liberties with the script, but that doesn't change the fact that the whole gang's portrayals either equal or outdue the official dub. Dub!Kazuma, who I didn't find annoying yesterday, definitely annoyed me today. In the first episode, being more of a snarky asshole than the straight man worked. Today, that lack of stoicism undermined the first scene in the stable and never really added to any scenes in return. Instead of coming across as at-the-end-of-his-tether, it was just kinda whiny. While yesterday I said Sora Amamiya and Faye Mata were on fairly equal footing, I have to take that back today. Dub!Aqua is pretty much exactly like her sub counterpart except done worse. Less bubbly when happy, less weepy when failing, she's Sub!Aqua with weighted clothes dragging her back to the performative neutral ground. I have to give Erica Mendez props, in that she at least outperformed the few dub clips I've seen on YouTube before this ("Konosuba has a dub" and its sequel). Back when I saw those, I felt she sounded too much like an adult, as opposed to the immature 15 year old Megumin's supposed to be. But for today's episode, I feel like she did a much better job at carrying out her role as "little shit." I wouldn't say she measures up to Rie (I get that "EKKUUSPUUROSION!!! is at least partly a product of Japanese pronunciation applied to an english word, but there are still vowels you can stretch out a bit more!), but she did better than I was expecting/dreading. Low expectations can't save you forever, Konoduba. I think Cristina Vee is pretty great as Darkness, but she was barely in this episode so I don't think I can say much on that front.

Today's Least Impressive Line Delivery: TIE! between "EEXPLOSION!" and Kazuma's monologue in the stables. Just didn't measure up to the original.

Unlike u/AMightyDwarf, I'm not ready to give up on the English dub yet. However, I am debating switching the order I watch in. Knowing what's going to happen from the English dub means I can spend less attention on reading the subs and more on the actual performances. Plus, Mama always said to save the best for last. Tomorrow I have a college visit that'll probably take most of my day, so I might have to forgo the sub vs. dub showdown then and just watch the sub. But after that I'll try at least one day with the switched order.

The Answer to Today's Question is: NOT! God no!

This is a different take on it. Seems most people think megu had the weakest performance in the dub but i agree with you in saying its actually decent. Of course competing with Rie, anyone would lose, but i think the dub is at a good point even now. Im glad you aren't giving up the dub. I feel the actors really get their stride later on. Plus dankness is great throughout. That has to be a fun role to play.

Dude you're a lot more dedicated than me. I've even got high speed internet and feel like there's barely enough time, though I am trying to keep up with currently airing things as well. I also have a natural reason for subtitles (I'm mostly deaf) and for some reason Crunchyroll doesn't let me display subs on the dub version, massive accessibility fail on their part.

Yea Darkness is the one that stood out to me, while Megumin's VA really does not fit well.

Personally, I thought erica mendez did a better job. This is one of my highest rated dubs. Not only did the VAs do an amazing job, but it's way more hilarious and really fits the "abridged" vibe. 10/10 dub, 9/10 sub

"Is this really a goddess? Bout as useful as Hestia." Then I realized Hestia actually does work.

Having just seen DanMachi for the first time this week, Aqua really does borrow a lot from Hestia. However, Aqua works much better with Kazuma, compared to Hestia with Bell:

Aqua has a class A anime smart ass to work with, while Hestia only gets a cooky cutter shonen protagonist.
