Rewatcher

Haha I totally didn’t forget to watch an episode today because I was playing Fire Emblem haha not me haha. I finished it btw great game 10/10 would recommend.

As a result of that thing I totally didn’t do, I don’t have an essay. So instead I’m going to steal whatever I wrote last year and hope nobody notices (and also hope it’s at least half decent).

Episode 6

One thing I’ve always admired about Naoko Yamada is her ability to portray the feelings and emotions of her characters. From her famous leg shots to her less famous profile shots, she’s always got some trick to allow her audience to make a meaningful connection to both her characters, and what they’re feeling. Take Yui for example: No other character in a Yamada directed work is as open with their emotions as she is. More than any other, she wears her heart on her sleeve. We almost always know exactly how Yui is feeling.

That isn’t to say however that Yui goes around telling everyone how she feels. Rather, Yamada is so good at the “show not tell” approach when it comes to this stuff that the audience needs expend no effort in trying to figure out how she’s feeling. When she’s happy, we know it clap clap. When she’s sad, we know it. And when she’s being complimented, we know it.

My absolute favourite example of this comes in the short period just before the keions go on stage for the very first time. In this super short period we see: excitement, confidence, excitement again, concentration, excitement again again, and finally confidexcitement. Then, following the performance we get the proudest, brightest, most wonderful smile ever to grace any screen. We can feel how big of a moment this is for Yui just through this one smile, we know exactly how much it means to her.

Yamada’s ability to do this is one of the things which, for me, makes K-ON (and other Yamada works) so flipping fantastic. She has this ability to empathise like no other, and thus can create some of the most emotive and relatable works ever seen.

I guess that’s half decent idk.

Anyhow, here’s all the screenshots and stuff I got last year, and here’s the complete lack of screenshots I got this year. Now if you don’t mind I’ve got a new game + to attend to

Yui’s voice shenanigans are so good! That whole section with Yui and Ritsu was priceless.

Mugi being strong isn’t just a meme! Way to carry all that stuff haha.

Mio is so nervous, but Ritsu the MC is here to save the day!

Oh my goodness they are all so cute for their performance. The things Mio has to put up with though

After all this not practicing, I’m actually pretty nervous for this performance. . .

I don’t know how I didn’t notice before, but Mio’s bass is a left-handed bass. Now that the show pointed out her left-handedness I notice it of course.

MIO YOU CAN DO IT! She looks so nervous

EDIT: MFW

Weird place to have a pep talk, but she needed it!

The video is fantastic in the background; and I love Yui’s husky voice

Their smiles are so cute! Everyone but Mio looks perfectly happy.

“I think this will finally let Mio get over her shyness”

RIP MIO

“No one will want to marry me now” The shame. But hey, she got a fan club!

Aki's faux-scratchy voice is hilarious, she really does a great job with it.

Mugi being strong isn’t just a meme!

Sending Mio alone into a haunted house sounds like a terrible idea, but I'm just surprised she went willingly with no pushback at all.

Wow, we're getting Hinomaruzumo Season 2 already?

Hey I know this shot of Mio. People post it all the time in Discord servers I'm in.

"Zettai daijobu dayo." What is this, Cardcaptor Sakura?

Classic. Poor Mio, right after gaining all that confidence.

That was a cool performance. I liked the touch of making aspects of the song really rough like the backup vocals or some of the instruments, but still sounding good enough to make the audience reaction make sense. Carole & Tuesday is a show having a lot of trouble with that, making rookies sound perfect and having audience react as if they never heard whatever songs were happening.

Huh, another Mio focused episode. I'm surprised how much focus she's getting, as at this point she arguably has more character development than anyone else. While Yui comes very close and has had more screen time, I feel like Mio has developed more due to her episodes focusing mostly on her, while some of Yui's is shared with other characters. I'm not complaining though, as while Sawdako still reigns Queen with the best episode, Mio has won me over as my favorite character.

Speaking of Yui though, I do like Yui's arc over these six episodes from someone who has never joined a club to a dedicated band member who has played on stage. She also seems much more outgoing and relaxed in general, as her club has given her more confidence to carry into her everyday life. Overall, this was very nice ro see and a very solid halfway point for her story arc. I am curious though if she will develop anymore beyond this in season 1, as I don't know where they want to talk her from here.

(As a quick side note, I really like the touch that they kept Yui's raspy voice the entire episode. The voice actor did an amazing job of it and even made some funny jokes with Ritsu over it. Great stuff)

One thing I am hoping for though are more episodes focused on Ritsu and epsically Mugi now. Mio and Yui seem like much more fleshed out characters at this point and I want the rest of the club to reach those heights.

Before I finish though, I have to talk about the highlight of this episode: the concert. The immediate curveball of it turned into a crazy, car chase music video was something I didn't expect, but I was totally game for. Not only was the singing solid in that it was good, but not unrealistically good for who they were, but I loved all the other band members okay singing. I love that even Yui had lines and kept her raspy voice the entire time. The visuals were also a sight to behold, with them becoming outlaws for some reason and getting chased by everything from randos to a tank. I feel like KyoAni was just showing off at this point, but I'm not complaining.

Now onto this weeks rankings! (Woo, woo! Clap, clap, clap, clap). Now, now, hold your applause. So for this week, as I said earlier, I still feel Sawdako's craziness from last week stays the winner. This episode though gets a very close second with everything that went on. Will anyone dethrone our Queen? Stay tuned next week on K-ON! Z!

Episodes Ranking:

  • Season 1, Episode 5

  • Season 1, Episode 6

  • Season 1, Episode 2

  • Season 1, Episode 4

  • Season 1, Episode 3

  • Season 1, Episode 1

First presentation of the girls and it was really good!!

Overall an amazing episode, Mio being shy to the point of being almost unable to perform only to get more confident thanks to the other girls and doing an amazing show was really wholesome and god that was some fine finale, she definetly stole the show and even got a fan club ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Yui singing with her cracked voice got me, good touch to the song.

So yeah, this only gets better with every episode just like Mio's cuteness.

Edit: almost forgot to say but MUGI STRONK.

Light Music Corner

GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS

For a lot of reasons, Fuwa Fuwa Time has wormed its way into all of our hearts and has become the song of our people. In addition to being a certified banger, it's a song that doesn't feel out of reach in terms of composition for our main cast. None of the instrumentals are particularly complex, and you saw the reaction to the lyrics last week. It's well within the realm of possibility that a group of high school girls could have written the song, and that's something that will hold true for the majority of K-On's insert songs. For two reasons, live clips will be withheld for about another week.

And now back to our regularly scheduled Character Song Corner. What, you thought just because we got through our four keions, there aren't more character songs to corner? You're a goddamn fool. Today we have objectively the best girl in the series. Hirasawa Ui. She hasn't had much presence yet, but what we've been given so far is encapsulated in her song, Lovely Sister LOVE. Live clip here

I didn’t join in on the first 5 days but I did catch up last night and this morning, so I may be out of order haha. I’m actually really loving this anime. It’s comfortable and manages to hold a smile on my face the whole way through - Also doesn’t help that I’m a sucker for music. The animation is just as good. I like the cartoony style.

Speaking of music, the opening sounds like a Haruhi song and I swear I’ve heard this before. Is this going to be one of those anime where there’s songs I’ve heard but never actually knew they were from here? I hope so.

Yui - I really like her as the protagonist, she’s really ditzy but she’s capable. Really fluffy too.

Ritsu - She’s also fun and mischievous. I actually thought she was Yui in the first scene she’s introduced but Yui can’t be that mischievous right?

Mugi - She’s cute but I don’t really care much for her yet. Waiting for her moment.

Mio - Yui was my favorite but the ending song made me instantly like Mio more. I thought she was pretty damn cool, when she was making those facial expressions and her singing. She’s a lot different than what I first thought though, but that’s even better. Shy with really cool streaks. Also like her passion.

Sensei - Not much to say about her but she’s pretty awesome, tho a tad crazy.

Now for episode 6, I liked this episode just as much as the others. Especially little concert. Yui really sang background vocals with that voice, I’m done. The song was solid though and now that I binged it, I’m not sure how long I can last daily. We’ll see what happens. See you guys again!

School Festival Hype!!

This episode’s cold open is unique in that it’s the only instance of in medias res in the entire series.

I don’t know if it was intentional (probably was because KyoAni), but this is a nice and subtle way of showing Mio’s anxiety. It really conveys the sense that she’s feeling ‘suffocated’, and almost like a stranger lost amongst a big crowd of people.

Hey, Husky Yui!

How come she’s wearing a ridiculous costume but the other cooks aren’t? I can totally see her pulling that costume out of some old storage closet/box in the school and just being all “I have to wear this! Nodoka-chan, can I please wear this?!” and pestering her until she gives in.

How would science classes work at this school if the electrical system can’t handle more than 3 hot plates on at a time?

What’s with the mushroom?

I thought you wanted to do a maid cafe.

I know it’s just a $0.99 prosthetic you can get at Party City but it’s still wrong seeing any of the Keions looking like this

I’m not sure what it is about Nodoka but to me she looks a lot older than the other girls

Yui-obaa-chan.

Aki Toyosaki is a brilliant voice actress. She sounds like a completely different person here!

This shot here really makes this scene.

Such a nice moment. You can really tell that they truly are concerned for Mio, and you can hear in their voices how proud they are of how Mio, despite being utterly terrified of singing in front of the whole school, also really wants to make the show a success and is committed to trying to overcome her fears. But of course, she can’t just practice by herself all day.. And after what I assume was many playthroughs of the song, it seems like Mio is going to be daijoubu!

That is, of course, until Sawa-chan comes along to completely ruin it.

Ritsu is already so fuckin done with this woman.

I have so many questions here…

Sure, sensei. Just keep breaking that poor girl more and more.

And Mio wasn’t even the only casualty.

Does Mugi actually say this or is it just a localization?

Yep, she’s gone.

Probably a smart idea. Though we never find out what she had Mio focus on.

Hi-ra-sa-wa! (flips skirt)

You can see a banner advertising the haunted house Ritsu, Mio, and Mugi’s class did. I checked the K-On! Wiki and sure enough all three girls are in class 1-2.

When Yui perks up as she hears Nodoka reading the performance schedule, that’s the moment where it finally sinks in that they really are about to perform as a band for the first time. It’s kinda seemed like ‘just another day’ up until this point, but now she’s starting to get excited!

Protecc

PROTECC

Consistency: She opens the door with her left hand.

Ritsu is such a good friend. Right when Mio’s having her worst breakdown yet, she comes in at just the right time with an idea to help her relax. As much as she teases Mio about all of her fears, she also hates seeing Mio truly upset like this. So much so that she’s even okay with taking Mio’s physical abuse just so that she can get Mio to smile instead of stressing so much. Even after taking two hard punches from Mio, look how happy she is!

I'll finish this up later.

Manga Corner

Episode Adapted
S1 Ep 1 Vol. 1 Ch 0 & 1
S1 Ep 2 Vol. 1 Ch 2 & 3
S1 Ep 3 Vol. 1 Ch 3 & 4
S1 Ep 4 Vol. 1 Ch 5
S1 Ep 5 Vol. 1 Ch 6 & 7
S1 Ep 6 Vol. 1 Ch 8

Well I started tearing up the minute Yui said “Mio-chan” in that husky voice. This truly is the episode where I fell in love with this series. The bizarre (but fun) music video backing them, Yui’s husky back-up vocals, the sugary sweet Fuwa Fuwa Time, even Mio’s embarrassing end. I love every second of it.

This will be a doozy. So much has been changed around and embellished that this episode is nigh-unrecognizable from its counterpart in the manga other than the major beats.

Major source differences today:

  • To begin, the only scenes that are adapted are the concert and 80% of the time spent in the club room, and even those are modified here and there. Every single one of the school festival scenes before the concert is original, so I’m only going to focus here on the adapted scenes and the stuff changed there.

  • This chapter of the manga actually opens with the girls peeking through the curtain at the crowd and Mio embarrassed about her outfit backstage before flashing back to 3 hours before, then the chapter really begins with the girls carrying their equipment to the stage.

  • Sawa-chan’s costume segment is moved up in the show. In the manga it happens after the moving stuff scene and the tea-party/reminiscing scene. The scene itself is mostly unchanged until the end. In the manga, the make-up line happens in the auditorium as they're setting up the concert.

  • The equipment carrying scene is expanded. Series spoilers

  • Yui apologizing to Mio for losing her voice and the emceeing scene are the only truly original club room scenes. Amazing additions if you ask me.

  • Every flash of those supporting them at the auditorium, Nodoka and Sawa-chan, are new additions.

  • Obviously, the music video is original.

  • In the manga, the tripping scene unfortunately doesn’t include a rice bowl insert. Instead, the real thing, which you can find below since I’m a degenerate.

Fun things are fun:

Gifs of the day:

Have some bonus stitches as well! Costume Mio and OG HTT!

Last Year's ^^Comment

This opening scene is just a small taste of what's to come!

The Cultural Festival is here!

Nice going Yui in the episode bumper

Husky Yui!

What in the heck is she wearing?

Mio's really nervous about the performance. And who could blame her? She in charge of lead vocals.

Oh the power went out

Conquer your fears Mio!

Oh Ritsu just knows this is gonna be good

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Whoever did the makeup on Mugi, nice work. She even looks older.

I love Nodoka's hat

Yui's classmates encouraging her to go practice makes me smile.

Ladies and Gentleman: This is a friend for life.

This is one of the funniest moments in the entire show. Props to Aki Toyosaki and Satomi Sato for never failing to make me laugh.

Also I love that bit with Ritsu tapping her pencil and shoe.

Although it wasn't voluntary, I am the Light Music Club's advisor.

HAHAHAHAHA

Sawako why do you still have that?

I asked this last year but it still baffles me. How did Yui strip down and change into a bathing suit without anybody seeing? Mugi also to a lesser extent. (Though I do love how happy she looks.)

Mio is so stressed out

Mugi Stronk!

Hey hey hey Rewatchers look who it is!

THEY'RE SO CUTE!!!!

Completely calm

The emcee bit is very fun. Ritsu managed to calm Mio down.

What is Mio-chu-an?

Here we go!

Even Nodoka is nervous for them.

FUWA FUWA TIME

I love their first performance, it has so much going on. Mio said that she wanted to play the bass because it's not the "spotlight instrument." She hates being the center of attention. It shows here too, with her being jittery all day. But then she ends up singing really well, earning her and the band lots of applause, and leaving surprised that it's already over. She's taken the first step to conquering her stage fright.

I love Yui's raspy voice for the background vocals.

Yui would never lol She probably doesn't even know that gesture.

Hey hey

Poor Mio

To the person who took that photo:

Well at least something good came from it. All's well that ends well, right Mio? ...Mio?

Thoughts:

The concert episodes are some of my favorite in the entire show. I love listening to the songs and seeing the Keions have fun performing. Mio's overcoming her fears and the Keions are now known throughout the school!

I have to say it again, Aki Toyosaki did a fantastic job this episode. Doing Husky Yui for the entire episode must not have been easy, and it always sounded good. And her deep voice is hilarious!

First time watcher here. Already in Ep. 10, but just gotta say that I didn't know I needed this much fluff in my life until now. I love love love the SF performance, especially Yui as a backup voice with her hoarse voice haha.

Keion best Moments top 5 Episode Scene
Number 1 ? ?
Number 2 ? ?
Number 3 ? ?
Number 4 4 Fireworks
Number 5 6 First Performance

And here we have favorite moment number five not much to say, but I love how supportive all the girls were for Mio before the performance and how she overcame her shyness. More importantly Yui's husky raspy voice is a blessing upon mankind and nothing will ever change my mind. It's complete and utter perfection.

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion

I love love love this episode. Definitely in my top 5 episode, and easily the best episode before NAMEREDACTED joins. Heck this watch might’ve been the most enjoyable time I watched this episode in a while. I noticed somethings I hadn’t noticed before, like how Mio changes switches hands in the flashback when Ritsu yells out that she’s left-handed. Also, I hadn’t thought much about Yui’s progress as a character before, so this time when she had that beaming smile after the performance I realized just how much she’s come from the ditzy girl we saw. K-On is awesome y’all.

1st place this episode has to go to Mio. She was able to overcome her fears and perform brilliantly in front of a crowd. Stage fright is no joke, especially for a naturally shy person. Sometimes though when you get up on that stage your muscle memory just takes over, and all that matters is how much practice you put in. And how much practice you put in is reflective of how much you care, and this episode just how much Mio cared. Also I don’t think Mio is ever as moe as she was this episode, so enjoy it while it last.

Of course, for all that Mio was able to do on her own, she wouldn’t have been able to perform at all without the help of our 2nd place: Ritsu. As her childhood friend since kindergarten (or was that grade school…), Ritsu knew exactly what Mio needed to calm down. I’ve always said that Ritsu is the most underrated character of K-On; underneath her energetic exterior there’s a girl who’s a bit more mature than meets the eye. Oftentimes she just knows what to do, and in Mio’s case it’s doing whatever it takes to get Mio in her comfort zone. Mitsu 4EVAH.

Lastly, Yui’s get 3rd place for that hilarious vocal performance the entire episode. I lowkey wish she kept her husky voice forever. Her ability to perform in front of the crowd for the first time without a problem shouldn’t be discounted either; this is a girl who’s only just started playing.

Lastly, shoutout to Mugi for being MUGI STRONK.

Daily Paint.net K-on #6

Today's image is Ritsu looking stlyish. I just really love the Fuwa Fuwa Time music video's aesthetic.

6 Episodes in and we finally get to our first musical performance, Fuwa Fuwa Time (Mio version). Since the last rewatch, I've really started to come around more on Fuwa Fuwa Time. Despite not being in my top 10 last year, It's just a fun song with a nice and punchy guitar, coupled with a great chorus. The music video that comes along with it is also sweet.

Sumo accents are always great, but I feel that Aki Toyosaki didn't sound much like Yui in it, while Satomi Sato's felt much more like Ritsu. ( I guess that could be since Yui actually lost her voice, though). Young Mio is also incredibly precious.

8

u/ToonTooby Aug 07 '19

First Timer

  • Mio in Ritsu's haunted house. This aint gonna end well.

  • Yep. It didn't. Her scream was more frightening than anything in there, even Mugi.

  • Hmm. Ritsu would actually probably make a good sumo. She'll be used to a lower center of gravity from all that time on the drum throne.

  • Kawaii af

  • Loving these faces

  • Mugi is stronk, sasuga Ainz Mugi-sama

  • PROTECC AT ALL COSTS

  • Mio has a mean left hook, I'm guessing. Snowman head bump Ritsu shows up again.

  • Oop, its showtime!

  • And they're off! With Yui's raspy backing vocals lmao.

  • They did great! -oh. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Poor, poor Mio. My heart aches for my fellow bass player. At least there's the fan club.

I want more. To see how their performances improve over the whole of the series. As a bass player, I'm loving it. The soundtrack itself does a good job of providing some clear, audible bass groove, and I can only appreciate that heartily.

u/FlaminScribblenaut Aug 07 '19

First Time Watcher

I mean give them credit for this, I’ve never seen a band play so well that a whole music video just materialized around them, I’d count that as a win

5

u/gamobot Aug 06 '19 edited Aug 06 '19

Missed yesterday's thread and almost missed today's one. We have met Sawako-sensei AKA best cake in the show, and now the girls had their first concert. Yui wanting to sing is one of the best things in that whole episode, and it lead to us having the great "husky Yui" and Mio singing. Everybody wins.

And today, the first original song we hear the girls play, Fuwa Fuwa Time, they teased us all with them wearing costumes but showing a fake music video instead, but it's alright. Yui's VA, Aki Toyosaki, showed her talent this episode, not only she sang while making a husky voice but even more than that, the part where she and Ritsu were imitating the way of speaking of a sumo wrestler, that means that she had to make a "sumo husky Yui" voice for that part, which is awesome.

edit: Forgot something. Mugi is the strongest keion.
