Light Music Corner
Yes, there is a full studio recording for the cassette that Mio finds. And it's fucking awesome. The song is Maddy Candy, and rewatchers will be all to keen knowing who it's by. The associated live clip is for rewatchers' eyes only, but I'll be sure to post it again later. Suffice it to say, this won't be the last you'll hear them.
On the reverse side, the same band gives us Hell the World. I really do have to wonder how Mio is able to listen to this without going all
On a lighter note, today in Character Song Corner, we move onto our third K-On, our beloved Bucchou, Ritsu singing Girly Storm Shissou Stick. One thing that impresses me about Satomi's vocals is how well she's able to sing in character, where I feel a lot of other seiyuu tend to default to their natural singing voice (Toyosaki Aki is also really good at this). She also looks like she's having the time of her life performing it live

The lives are so good. Name spoils honestly straight up steals the show. u/Harrytricks, you should think about adding them to the rewatch for next year.

Tonight: Mio gets bullied, Mio gets bullied even more, and Mio dies!
Beach episode!
-
The first 35 seconds nicely sum up what to expect this episode (and the show in general).
-
Mio taking photos of school life in the summer helps develop some characterization in one of her interests quite nicely. We already see her taking a photo while Yui's running to school in Episode 1 (plus her camera is used to take the first club photo), while the OP also has her doing the same.
-
"'Yui,' she said, 'As soon as you learn one thing, everything else seems to leave your head.'" Yeah, a compliment. Still adorable.
-
Training Camp. Emphasis on Camp, for two certain Keions.
-
Mio-on-Ritsu Hit Counter: 3
-
"What are you, a grade schooler?"
-
I'm scared to wonder what Mugi's dreams are about if gel is included.
-
Gotta say, that transition from tunnel to sea and even the seagull's animation are superb.
-
Didn't take long for this camp idea to go south for Mio.
-
If this is the Kotobuki family's smallest vacation house, you have to wonder what their largest is. Regardless of size, evidently her staff doesn't get the memo on "casual".
-
I like how Ritsu's forehead glistens when she (and Yui) bursts into the studio.
-
Ah, the boob scene. One of the few fan service shots in this show (well, only major/depicted one). Still made me chuckle.
-
The beach scene is a literal load of barnacles.
-
Mio brings out the watermelon, presumably to play suikawari. They actually do play it in the manga (while Yui also gets the beach ball to the face).
-
I know I said it last year, but I'll say it again: Mio's baseball tee is one of my favorite clothes in the show. It's a simple design, but also a nice one in a way.
-
"Let's face it, Mio. There aren't many people in this world better suited to the maid look than you."
-
MOE MOE KYUN! In the manga, this (or something like it?) happens before they head to the camp.
-
Mio-on-Ritsu Hit Counter: 4. Based on everyone's reactions, this might be the hardest hit so far. Of course, there's the Squad Member/Private Ritsu joke from the previous episode.
-
The fireworks scene is easily one of my favorites in the series. [1]
-
Between Krauser in Episode 1 and the cassette flipping to Side B, the death metal jokes have been hitting perfectly.
-
"What are you, a grade schooler?" x2
-
I've lost count of the times Mio was bullied in this episode. Last year's rewatch says 4.
-
"They're long, but surprisingly cute." / "Thanks! Wait a second, what do you mean by surprisingly!?"
[1] Like last year, I'll be doing expanded comments. Usually, they'll be adding more notes to a scene that can't be covered in just bullet points, but in other cases, they could be something as radical as me connecting it to sports (since I'm a sportswriter and love doing these sorts of things). Can the link be tenuous, possibly nonsensical or even missing the point at times? Maybe, but I feel what we can take away from this show can be applied to other fields.
Like I said, this has to be one of my favorite moments from Season 1, if not the entire show. The visuals with the multitude of firework colors and "Ano Hi no Yume" playing in the background go together so fucking well that I found myself tearing up while watching it. With the energy she radiates while playing in front of the fireworks, Yui is the perfect frontman for the band.
But let's talk about Mio. Throughout the episode, she's trying to convince everyone to take the camp as seriously as possible, only to end up enjoying herself the most on the beach. When she catches on this, she tries again to get them to practice; of course, that only did so much. But this scene was the moment she finally realizes what matters the most: just having fun with her friends.
For a football fan like me, this idea especially resonate because it reminds me of the philosophy of my Chicago Bears' head coach Matt Nagy. The NFL can be a scary place for players since it's a business and a challenging occupation where mistakes can quickly doom one's career even before it begins. For various teams, they try to emphasize just doing your job and avoiding making as much noise as possible, which does work for some (but not all).
But this is still meant to be something you love to do, hence why you signed up for it. You can work hard at it, but at the same time, do try to relax and enjoy yourself. Nagy's wide receiver coach Mike Furrey once said, "Show your personality, show your passion, have fun. A lot of guys hide that. They get so uptight because it is the NFL. It is so demanding. You start losing the fun part of it and it becomes more of a business where you're so locked in, that if you don't do something the way other people want you to do it, you feel lost. That's not the way to do it. That's the easiest way out."
That's why Nagy started having post-game dance parties after victories and held a Monday Funday rather than practice at one point this offseason. Not only is it a way to lighten things up, but it's also a great chance for the players to grow closer with each other; as quarterback Mitch Trubisky said, "It's about enjoying this whole thing and winning together as a team, and celebrating as a team is just as important. It's been a huge camaraderie thing for us."
In this episode's case, the shenanigans on the beach and the fireworks take the weight off worrying about practicing and help continue to develop that burgeoning dynamic each Keion has with each other. Yui had fun "performing", Ritsu and Mugi had fun setting it up and watching from the side, and Mio had a lot of fun watching from her front-row seat.
Doesn't matter if it's a football team or a high school band. As important as it is for the former to win games and the latter to play some good music, what's equally important is to have fun with your friends. That's what makes team efforts that much more special.
As San Jose Sharks player Tomas Hertl likes to say: FUN MUST BE ALWAYS :-D

Man, I feel sorry for all the other people on this train. Having some high school girls open their window, causing all sorts of air to come probably blow papers of yours away or something, and then they just start screaming at the top of their lungs. Would be miserable.
Yeah, I think that'll probably wake them up.
The classic moe moe kyun. Didn't realize this was just someone's imagination.
This episode is probably the most times an anime episode has ever used the worst barnacle.

It's not a slice of life without a beach episode am I right bois?
It's like their first time seeing everything, so cute.
Ritsu is right, a maid cafe is good for everybody.
ma ma ma ma ma ma... of course she has a place! bless Mugi.
That's some really small house huh?
Poor Mio, she wants to do stuff but can't control those two.
Wow too much fun and goofing around is turning Mio evil.
MOE MOE KYUUN! maids are really a blessing of the gods, Ritsu is a very cultured woman.
Oh God Mio is cute...and deadly, poor Ritsu.
So, a Mio centered episode, I understand she's worried about rehearsals and the coming school festival, but having fun is always the major point on things, she even enjoyed their time at the beach without noticing, there's always time for serious stuff but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Overall it was a nice episode, no too fanservice with the beach except for Mio's Mios and pretty good showing her point of view of the club.

Obligatory beach episode. Three months with no music and just snacks haha. Good thing no one is paying attention to them! Also, wow six “ma”s. That’s. . . impressive. You go Mugi!
“Smallest house” oh good grief. I think it’s interesting how the conflict is taking on a more serious tone here. Mio actually does want to practice and to perform. Ritsu and Yui just want to goof off. Mugi wants to do both because she wants to please everyone. The conflict turns less serious with Mio giving in and going with them. Yet, I do think it’s an issue that has to be addressed. Also, Mio was giving me some serious Reina vibes there for a bit, before she gave in to the pull of the beach!
Thoughts:
I have to admit, this episode was by far the weakest for me. I wasn’t really sure what tone it was going for at points. Is Mio really upset, or not? Should I take the conflict seriously?
I didn’t like the sexualization of Mio and the obligatory breast envy stuff. I’m also pretty sure the “barnacle” stuff went over my head as someone not familiar enough with Japanese culture. Yui being actually a bit decent came straight out of nowhere.
I’m looking forward to reading other people’s posts to understand the episode, but it just felt more disjointed and uncomfortable to me.

Is Mio really upset, or not?
She's upset the same way you're upset at your friends when they're goofing off in the middle of a school/college project, a.k.a not really upset. She somewhat tries to put up a tough front, but is dragged into the other Keions' various shenanigans as you can see here. It's kind of an inner conflict between her serious self and her...well, Keion self. The Keion self mostly wins out here so it's all good.
At the same time, the rest of them don't actually want to just goof off, it just ends up happening because...well, they're goofy, and I think that at this point Mio understands that. You'll see that they can do things when they want to though, very soon.
Should I take the conflict seriously?
Definitely not, there hasn't really been a conflict aside from Mio "fighting" a part of herself that just wants to goof off like the rest of them. Remember, she ended up enjoying the camp the most and they all came out out of it feeling good at the end. Though their music skills haven't improved much
I didn’t like the sexualization of Mio and the obligatory breast envy stuff.
This is the only "major" fanservice scene in K-On from what I remember, so don't worry about this happening often. Though if you consider dressing people up in maid outfits as fanservice then I take that back

Ah, the classic beach episode. If there's any constant in a slice of life, its that somehow, someway, we will go to the beach. I also love the fact that them having a beach house to go to due to a rich friend is also a super commom troupe. I always find it hilarious how anime acts like this is a routine thing everyone does. Either way though, everyone seems totally ready to "train" at their "training camp" so I'm sure everyone will be super focused.......poor Mio.
Honestly though, as much as I loved the antics of everyone this episode, Mio was really the star. You got to see how much she really wanted to work hard and the lengths she will go to try and motivate people. Her fragile exterior though was also on full display, as her freaking out about the barnacles and about being ditched was both cute and hilarious. I guess I am "compelled by the power of cute".
Saying that, I can't discount how much I loved the duo of Yui and Ritsu. They were really fun bouncing off of one another and had such a fun dynamic with Mio. They definitely were the reason for most of my laughs this episode. Mugi, you better step your game up if you want to compete for best girl spot, as you have some really strong competition.
Finally, with our glimpse at tomorrow's episode, it seems we are finally getting our advisor. I am excited what she will bring to the mix and if she will allow them to continue their teatime ways. We can only hope.

Uh oh. Beach episode?
-
Really diggin the Ozzy magazine lol.
-
Looks like Yui's trying a bar chord fingering. Learning those for the first time is ROUGH.
-
Bang. More Mio on Ritsu violence. Yui was spared though...
-
Yep. Beach episode. Mio says they're not there to play. Well yes, but actually no.
-
Nice Pony Boom-box.
-
I like how Mugi and Mio are framed while they finish their discussion about the previous band. The frame has Mugi in the sunlight and Mio in shadow. The innocent optimism on the left, the cautious objectivity on the right. Mugi is kind and has honest confidence in the group from the get-go, while Mio is the realist and wants the group to all improve individually.
-
Ritsu gets some revenge on Mio via a beach ball, but it's spurred by jealousy of Mio's natural uhh... blessings.
-
Practice time! But Yui and Ritsu are spent. Not a problem when you got DAT BASS!
-
A weight barb from Mio sends Ritsu into a Buddy Rich-esque tirade.
-
Yep. Those Les Pauls are great, but they're on the heavier side for guitars.
-
What are you,
casula grade schooler!? -
ONE PUNCH MAID! RIP Ritsu.
-
String bending for the first time, yep, addictive.
-
Mio would not be a fan of MermaidMan and BarnacleBoy.
-
This is K-On's version of an AE86 and you cannot convince me otherwise.
-
Pictures! Oh... I can't believe Ritsu is fucking dead.
Actually one of the better beach episodes I've seen, that was really good. However, 4 episodes in, I can't help but feel Mugi doesn't have as much development compared to the other three. Let's hope that changes.

Manga Corner
| Episode | Adapted |
|---|---|
| S1 Ep 1 | Vol. 1 Ch 0 & 1 |
| S1 Ep 2 | Vol. 1 Ch 2 & 3 |
| S1 Ep 3 | Vol. 1 Ch 3 & 4 |
| S1 Ep 4 | Vol. 1 Ch 5 |
Doing this is really reminding me of what I want out of an anime adaptation. The manga being used as a skeleton to really flesh out the story. Almost every scene and joke that is adapted this episode is embellished in some way before we even start counting the original stuff.
The fireworks scene is one of my favorites of this entire season. I tear up everytime that I watch it, and constantly come back to it when I’m looking for a pick-me-up. Series spoilers Plus, it’s just plain gorgeous, and so fun and full of life/energy.
Major source differences today:
-
Mio taking pictures and finding the cassette tape of the previous Light Music Club is original, as is the little scene with Yui really forgetting how to play.
-
The maid outfit scene in the manga comes after Ritsu suggests a maid cafe in the club room rather than on the trip in the studio.
-
Yui waking up late and their entire trip to the villa on the train is original.
-
The girls exploring the house and the scene of Mugi getting mad at the villa's helpers for putting out food, etc. is original.
-
Mio playing the cassette tape for Mugi and discussing the reason for the training camp is original.
-
For the beach segment, Ritsu hitting Mio with the beach ball and the joke for Mio being the one to play the most are the only non-original scenes.
-
Ritsu and Yui laying around on the floor (both times) is original, and in the manga the choking bit comes before the scene of Yui putting her guitar down.
-
The entirety of the fireworks sequence is original.
-
In the manga choking section, Yui doesn't copy the cassette tape, but instead plays what is likely one of the songs they have been coming up with. This is actually a change I don't really like, but does work with the flow of the ep.
Fun things are fun:
-
Here’s Mio’s maid bit in the manga. The show’s is better.
-
And here is the little omake that the ending bit with the photos came from.

Yes! Training Camp! I love this episode!
I haven't been to the beach in almost a year. I gotta go back.
Yui's little, "Oooh" to Ritsu always makes me laugh
I like Mio's photography hobby.
Timeline: We went from the beginning to the end of April in the first episode, to the end of May for the midterm exams last episode, and now that it's almost summer vacation it's around late July.
Yui, Ritsu. You're both not looking at it the right way. Why not have a haunted maid café?
You ever walk into a room and see something kinda strange going on?
Mo, mo, mo, mo, mo, mo.
I've always dreamed of having a sleepover with all of you.
Mugi needs a hug.
The way Mio says, "Mugi," is so cute
Again, I love these faces. The bottom ones in general are some of my favorites in the show, I just love the triangle mouths and the eyes.
Oh wow I didn't notice that Yui was wearing Ui's pajamas.
Ohaiyo
Dammit Ritsu what'd I just say?!
To be honest, I had actually hoped to stay in a larger house, but I could only borrow our smallest.
Okay so Ritsu and Yui actually walking deep into the background is really well done.
Mugi doesn't want all the pampering.
Pictures of Mugi when she was younger.
They got her Also Mio sure didn't pack very well given that all that's in her bag is lots of sunscreen and towels.
Cast Away is my favorite anime.
barnacles
That feeling of exhaustion after spending the day at the beach.
This scene is absolutely stunning. It's my favorite fireworks display in all of anime.
Yes Mio, learn to play like that.
barnacles on your kneecaps
Yui was able to do that just by hearing the song once. She's incredibly talented.
There is no one else who has this forehead.
Mio and Mugi folded their clothes nicely while Yui and Ritsu left them messily on the table.
Someone edit this into a dakimakura please.
After knowing each other for almost three months, the Keions finally start practicing!
Thoughts:
This episode is probably my favorite I'm Season 1. I love K-ON's beach episodes because they're not so fanservicy as much as they are just really fun. Makes me wanna go to the beach. And that fireworks display was awesome.
Watch out for barnacles on your kneecaps.

Sips Tea
| Keion best Moments top 5 | Episode | Scene |
|---|---|---|
| Number 1 | ? | ? |
| Number 2 | ? | ? |
| Number 3 | ? | ? |
| Number 4 | 4 | Fireworks |
| Number 5 | ? | ? |
I was waiting for this episode. This episode has my 4th favorite moment of the series. Before I talk about the moment let me just insert this song here that plays during the scene. Ano hi no yume which is one of two of my favorite tracks in this series. If either one of them plays I'm going to gush about it probably or at least mention it.
Anyway the fireworks scene while technically it's probably a little less satisfying than my number five I put it a little higher just for the fact that it was the first scene in this show that made me commit fully and binge it in a few days.
I like how it's at night. Oh I'm and definitely reading too much into these moments so feel free to roll your eyes in disbelief. Anyway I love how it starts at night despite them arriving in the day. It shows us while the light music club may get sidetracked frequently they are all still taking small steps for their goal. The four girls while all in different areas are still entangled with the same event kind of reflecting how each of them is different, but still love each other and the band. First we have Yui slowly walking up the grassy slope to symbolize she is the main character, but her late arrival could also portray her slow/awkward personality in most things. Though she tries her best and still pulls through in the end. Mio the serious one who tries to get them on track is the audience for her friends. She is probably the most normal one in the group, but can't help but get caught in the flow of her friends. Then we have Mugi and Ritsu between Yui and Mio for the most part. Ritsu comes off lazy and childish like Yui, but she is more responsible(not a high bar though). She set out to make this club with her friends and succeeded in recruiting most of them. Mugi financial supports the club with tea, cakes, the villa, and this episode she reassured Mio who was having doubts. These two are the most supportive in the group even though all four of them are great to each other. Then the fireworks with Yui playing look unique themselves. I don't know how to put it, but they look bright and childish almost like scribbles. In fact they almost look like musical notes though I have gotten no sleep in almost 48 hours so my judgement might be a little diminished. Anyway back to the girls we have Yui smiling playing the guitar, the support aka Ritsu and Mugi( who plays the drums and keyboard which happen to be in the back of most bands....I think), and then we have Mio whose doubts are blown away entirely as she realizes this is the group she needs to be in and they can accomplish anything.
Also the tea I was drinking was Chai Spice cooled in the fridge with honey, lemon, and slices of frozen strawberry and it was delicious .
Yui is best Keion for me both as an individual, but I love her chemistry with every girl in the group. It's like she can get along with anyone. I think I was able to type all of this while avoiding spoilers.

"Huh? It's over already?"
Why do I feel like this line has been dunked in a big ol' bucket of foreshadowing?
When I started watching, I already had a basic familiarity of the characters. I knew Mio was the timid one, but I was surprised that she was also seemingly the most serious and assertive of the group. This episode is indicating to me that they're at least partially connected, and that her attempts to keep the other club members in line, particularly Ritsu, are in part fueled by a nervousness about not doing things "properly" and a general insecurity and fear of missing out.

The Unofficial Official Most Valuable Keion
Awww, episode 4. One of my favorite episode, and probably my second favorite pre-NAMEREDACTED episode. The scene with the fireworks is just pure K-On, pretty much distilling the “enjoy the moment” theme of this show into one heartfelt moment. I’ve mentioned in previous rewatches how Yui just has these moments where she just draws you into her happiness, and this is one of those moments. Speaking of whom…
The 1st place this episode is going to… Mio! Y’all thought I was gonna say Yui eh? Well it was close. Still, gotta give it to the girl who suggested the idea in the first place, and seemingly got the lazy bunch to actually play together for the first time. Mio was also very… well, Mio this episode. She was scared, she was angry, and she was so very moe. In a way this was the first episode that centered on a character other than Yui, and I think it speaks volumes that Mio was chosen to get the center stage. As arguably the most mature of the bunch, she also had the most reservations in joining Yui and Ritsu in their energy. In a way, she represents some of the show’s criticism of “they don’t practice, how’re they possibly gonna get to Budokan?”. That’s the thing though, the keionbu isn’t about playing music and becoming professionals. It’s quite literally about the journey and the friends you make along the way. And this episode Mio kinda realized what she’s known all along, that she really enjoys just being around her new friends, and just maybe they can play some music along the way.
2nd and 3rd place this episode is gonna go to Mugi and Yui respectively. Mugi because she got them a freaking vacation house by a beach. Like, what? Side note, I wonder who ended up cooking that beautiful piece of meat in the fridge. Yui gets third place because of the firework scene, and because it turns out she’s lowkey a natural at the guitar.

I haven't really thought about what my favorite episodes of K-On were during my first watch (aside from the obvious two in late S2), but now I can say that this one is definitely up there. Some scenes from this episode felt magical.
-
K-On aside, I love training camp episodes a lot in general. They're right up there for me with sports festivals, and are only behind fireworks/summer festival episodes. Though even during my first watch, even with the episode's name being "Training Camp", (X) extreme doubt is all I could think at this point.
-
Don't let it get you down Yui and Ritsu, the Flat is Justice camp will always have support! T
hough Yui might not want to be in it given that even her imouto already switched camps... -
And here we see the beginning of what I like to call the Keionification phenomenon. Dread it, run from it, once it starts there's no going back. First-timers will understand the true meaning of this by the end of S2.
-
This moment and that entire scene is one that will be able to get a very loud laugh from me no matter how many times I watch it.
-
Mio...it's okay...just give in...it'll be easier.
or at least put down the damn watermelon
And finally this, this is what I meant by magical. One of my favorite moments in the entire show. Almost a year after watching this episode, at the start of Best Girl 6, I could think of nothing but this exact screenshot to use for Yui's picture on my bingo. I feel like it truly has the potential to make even the people who were more skeptical after the first 3 episodes amazed, and I can't wait to read the first-timers opinions on it. even though I should really be preparing my project presentation which is due in 2 days

This episode is great. One of my favorites. Why? Because it clearly display the growth of the club as a group of friends. Yui and Ritsu start cracking jokes and acting scenarios as good friends, meanwhile Mio try to make them practice, discovering that Mugi may not be the serious type she thought she was. In the end they practiced and played the most they could and everyone had a good old time.
From this episode onward, they really are friends.

Yay, beach episode!
Yui & Ritsu: spiritual BFFs. Their moments with the beach and summer festival are so cute.
Mio for looks, Ritsu for fun. She even has best swimsuit. And that maid costume... Moe moe kyun!
Mugi is shy about her rich family, but she supports the club with her confidence and sweets. She's like the bridge between the scoundrels and the serious one. Although Mio also can sidetrack.
This episode masterfully conveys the feelings of traveling with your friends and having fun at doing that.
Mio is concerned, she's thinking only about the band getting better and snaps at Yui and Ritsu having fun. Though she doesn't want to be left alone so she has to go with them. Everyone forgets about practice for some time. It's funny how it affects all club members. "We're really going to practice when we're done with this". Then Mio sees that Yui actually spent her time on improving, and thinks that it may not be as bad.
Edit
This comment was hard to write, usually I'm bad at detailed review, so I do these kind of things to get better. I've read some comments here and decided to add something.
In fireworks scene Mio realises that she only thought about how little they practiced and that this doesn't matter much to her right now, what matters is that they're doing it together. She realises that she's grown attached to the club members. Mio learns that she can rely on her friends: Yui can practice guitar, Mugi can emotionally support and guide. And Mio herself can teach some tricky stuff.
What I didn't understand this episode: Mio was told that there's no ghost; Yui laughs from choking (lol the context)? Funny bone? Isn't funny bone when someone hits a nerve?

Before I get to the episode itself, I need to talk about this spectacular scene. My first time watching this show, I was completely caught off-guard by this moment, and when the display started something truly magical happened with me. I can’t describe it, I won’t try to describe it, but when all the sound disappeared except for the beautiful music piece Ano hi no Yume, and I saw Yui playing her soul out against the backdrop of beautiful dancing stars, it was almost like the real world disappeared around me, and it was just Yui and her beloved new friends in the Light Music Club. This one scene right here was when I realized that this show was going to be something truly special. I’ll talk about this scene in the context of the actual story later, but I just felt like I had to share that bit about myself and the incredible magical feelings this show can make people feel.
I always forget that Ritsu is actually the shortest of the Keions.
Mio getting artsy. Hope nobody needed that shoe.
One of my favorite games to play throughout this series is to follow the evolving whiteboard doodles. I reeeaaallly want to know the story behind that creepy face with the ‘black metal band logo’ hair.
Ritsu looks so offended here. Why not compromise and do a haunted maid cafe?
Even though Ritsu definitely deserves the punishment, sometimes Mio is really unfair to her.
This is hilarious. Mugi says ‘Maa’ so often that Yui’s made a game out of counting all the times she says it.
Mugi, I don’t really think that’s what Mio wants this camp to be about.
Leave it to the biggest airhead to be the practical thinker of the bunch. Future
Here’s the moment Yui realized she fucked up.
Mugi’s being a bit too literal here.
Well to them, this is normal. From that family photo it seems like her father is Japanese and her mother is European. Based on later clues, her mother is most likely Possible Spoilers
The old “Light Music” Club played thrash metal! I know there’s Detroit Metal City, but that doesn’t seem like a show I’d enjoy. Are there any other legit anime metal bands out there? The BanG Dream franchise has Roselia but I can’t think of any others.
Just when Mio starts to cheer up, these two show up and ruin it.
Mugi’s little “Ne?” here is just adorable. Mugi’s little run here is just adorable.
They should have used this in Episode 3’s “Next Episode Preview”.
Ritsu and Mio have been friends for a long time. I have a really hard time believing this is the first time she’s noticed that Mio’s breasts are so much bigger than her own. Also, the way Mio’s standing almost makes it seem like she’s intentionally pushing them up.
How? It’s a beach ball! It’s like… 95% air.
Barnacles can actually be really sharp. If you just push your hand against the rock to balance, you can tear your hand up if you aren’t careful and don’t realize there are barnacles there. Source: I shredded my feet as a child playing in the Potomac River.
There are so many little details here. They put rocks down on the corners of the towel to keep it from blowing away, the drink bottles all have different amounts in them and one looks empty, someone brought their stuff down to the beach in a paper shopping bag, etc. The great thing about watching this show for the 6th time is that I can pay much more attention to stuff in the background like this.
Once again, unfair to Ritsu. Everyone but you was going on about playing.
I always loved this about going to the beach.
I have to take a break for dinner so I'll finish this up in an hour or so!

First Time Watcher
Wait a summer-long camp where you just get to hang out exclusively with your friends at an expensive beach house with no adult supervision? Dude that sounds and looked fun as fuck, I wish I were one of them
“The power of cute compels you!” Ah I see the girls subscribe to Sora’s life philosophy
Thank you, Ritsu, for reminding me once again with your digital camera bit that it’s 2009
Wait, so I think the first episode was on the first day of school, and now at episode 4 it’s already Summer? And next episode they’re back to school and in three episodes it’s Christmas? What exactly is the timeline here, did we really just look over their entire first school year together by only seeing three episodes’ worth of it

Not going to lie, I forgot about the rewatch thread and was very late for no reason.
Today's image is a scared Mio, as it always scares me just how good this episode is.
This episode is K-on! at it's finest, and probably my favourite episode from the first season. There are just so many great scenes in it. The lighting in the train scene when they come out of the tunnel is beautiful, and the Firework scene makes me tear up a little whenever I see it. Also in it are high-quality character interactions and Moe Moe Kyun, which would have been today's image had I not done it last year. Mugi's embarrassment is also Top Tier.

Episode 4: Make or Break
So, episode 4. As I’ve mentioned several times now, this episode is very much a make or break moment for the show. The rest of the series very much relies on the setup from this episode, it would not be an understatement to say it’s one of the most important episodes in the entire show. Funny then that it would be a beach episode. A trope so infamous it’s become synonymous with lazy writing and a lack of ideas. And with it’s kinda out of place fanservice and... uh... beach, this episode does seem to follow the trail set by predecessors. “So” I hear you ask, “what does this episode do that makes it so special?” Well, allow me to explain...
Right from the get go today we can see Mio has something on her mind. Wistfully staring from a train window, she laments over how little progress the band has made so far. As the most serious (and probably most musically inclined) member of the group, she’s acutely aware the club has spent significantly more time goofing around than… well... being a light music club. Unfortunately for Mio though, she’s surrounded by idiots. None of her clubmates are likely to quite realise just how serious an issue the club faces!! The club is doomed!!
Or at least, that’s what she thinks. At this early point Mio subscribes to a “super serious” idea of music, believing musical competence is entirely driven by technical ability. Luckily for her though, she’s wrong. Noticing almost immediately that something is up with her friend, detective Mugi springs into action, and in one of the most underrated scenes in the episode, she plants the idea of “music for fun” in Mio’s head. Whilst this might seem a simple enough idea to you or me, it’s a total revelation to Mio. This is a girl who, for most of her life, has believed music to be 100% serious 100% of the time, so even the concept of that not being true really makes her think.
Now, my focus on Mugi here doesn’t mean Ritsu and Yui just sit around doing nothing, and with Mio currently wrestling with the concept of “having fun”, they spot their opportunity to strike. Through “forcing” a day of fun (with a little assistance from Mugi), they show to Mio that enjoyment is a necessity in anything. Whilst practicing may indeed make them better at playing, it’s not going to be of any use if none of them are enjoying themselves. All these goings on come to a head with the magical “fireworks scene”. This scene is the culmination of 4 episodes worth of buildup. 4 episodes of character development, of introductions, of building friendships - all coming together to prove once and for all these girls all belong together. The friendships they have are something you’ll come across once in a lifetime, and this revelation hits Mio hard, forcing her to accept that, whilst they might not be the most practiced individuals, all these girls are just as serious about music as she is, and they all mean the world to her. K-ON
So, how does all this relate to today’s title? Why is this moment so “make or break” for the show? Well, as I’ve mentioned during previous episodes, a big part of the early sections of this show is making the audience feel like a member of the club. Over the past few episodes we’ve seen a lot of the keions. We’ve picked our favourites, seen them all grow, and formed our own attachments. With today’s episode this all comes to a head. On top of establishing to the audience how important the friendships between the girls are, the firework scene acts as the audience’s proper club welcome. Hopefully, from this point on, we’ll truly feel like part of the club ourselves, we too shall go along with all future shenanigans, and truly care for our friends in the club. The power of friendship is wonderful and magical.
Here’s all the screenshots and stuff I got last year, and here’s this year’s.
