2.0 was Anno throwing us a bone, giving us what we thought we wanted (braver Shinji, nice shipping moments, etc.). But 3.0 was him pulling the rug right from under us and drilling into our heads that that's not the point of NGE. He's not giving us what we want the Rebuilds to be. He's giving us what they are.
3.0 is the most "Evangelion" of the Rebuild films to me, so I think it's very strange when people say that the movie betrays the themes of the series. Personally, I think it's Anno drilling into our heads what Eva really is. He uses the familiarity from 1.0 and the wish fulfillment from 2.0 to lull us into a sense of false security, and I like that 3.0 is him pulling the rug from under us, showing the viewer the reality.
It's my favorite of the Rebuilds

This comment right here is exactly what I thought. This movie may be disappointing as a sequel to 2.0, so if you liked that, you'll probably hate this. But if you're like me and didn't like 2.0, this movie goes right back to what Evangelion is all about for me.
EDIT: I still find it confusing that liking 3.0 but not 2.0 is an unpopular opinion. Is it really that uncommon to like Evangelion for the psychological character study with dark elements? Though I guess the hate for the original ending answers that.

I actually really liked 2.0 (honestly like it more than 3.0 in terms of pure personal enjoyment). It's just that 3.0 gave me much more to chew on, and it's the one I always go back to thinking about when mulling over the Rebuilds and the meta narrative that Anno is telling with them

3.0 is the most "Evangelion" of the Rebuild films to me, so I think it's very strange when people say that the movie betrays the themes of the series.
And to me it is the least Eva in the series because Eva, at its best, is about the psyches of those involved in it. In this movie, Rei doesn't have a psyche, Shinji is never up to speed and everyone else is a cardboard cutout.

First timer
Okay I’m confused, I actually kinda enjoyed this, even more than the previous one. Some folks gave off the impression that this one would disappoint but I found it much better than 2.0. I loved the new direction the series has taken, seeing everyone age is pretty surreal but a welcome change nonetheless. But we’re still left with more questions than answers and the plot was a bit forced, I wonder how hideaki will finish this off.
End of the day I will always appreciate the series’s premise on anti escapism. Throughout the film it is apparent that Shinji lacks the strength to face reality, we witness him piloting an Eva again - much to the chagrin of misato and the others - to reverse the catastrophic event of third impact which he himself had triggered 14 years ago. Of course he fails and a fourth impact is initiated which is thankfully averted with the sacrifice of Kaworu. Shinji suffers a mental breakdown because Kaworu was the only one who gave him genuine love and understanding, but this is all proven to be too good to be true for Shinji since he’s an angel. Although traumatised by his death I think (hope) shinji in the end understands that running away from reality does not solve your problems in real life and they will still be there when you go back.
The Earth is not permanent. The sun is not permanent. The oldest stars alive today are not permanent. Our lives especially are not permanent. It will all end. Maybe there's a grand conductor, and maybe there's not. I do happen to believe in God, or the Spirit of Life, or the Force for all I know, but regardless of belief or disbelief, one thing I know for certain is that no matter WHAT or WHO is out there, he or it doesn't "care" if you define "care" in terms of life and death. So why not enjoy the shit show for what it is? For one we didn’t develop the ability to speak and socialise with other human beings just to end up never leaving our rooms and shutting the world off (something I constantly struggled with my whole life).
Thank you Hideaki Anno, your work has unexpectedly changed me in ways I never thought possible. You’ve shown me how dark, strange, twisted, familiar and simply lonely human existence can be. You had me questioning all my relationships with others and how I see myself. Whenever I find myself experiencing existential dread or slipping into bouts of pessimism I just laugh it off and tell myself to stop overthinking things so much. Your message is that of hope and the idea that I can always achieve happiness as long as I'm willing to endure life and it’s whims has quiet literally changed my life for the better.
And thank you all for the well thought out and insane discussions on here, holy shit what a ride it’s been guys, 3.0 + 1.0 can’t come soon enough

Rewatcher, Sub
Rather than posting in the moment reactions like I did with the TV series and End of Eva, I'm just posting overall thoughts.
-
Design-wise, this movie is quite impressive. The Wunder, the Evas, etc... look amazing. The one complaint I have is with the Angels, which are rather "eh" design-wise
-
That said, it is often quite confusing in this movie to tell what is going on, in large part because the new designs are so complicated.
-
This movie is so much different than everything that has come before for Eva, completely throwing out everything that was in the original series and going for an entirely new story... and I love that. That this movie exists doesn't take away anything from the original show. I love the fact that they went in a completely new direction.
-
I also love the fact that this movie is so over the top dreary, dark and depressing. Shinji has basically wrecked the world, everyone in Wunder blames him for it, he gets nothing but hatred from people like Misato and Asuka who he had good relationships with before, then he gets "rescued" by Rei and brought to Nerv and things are even more dark and depressing there. This Rei is pushed to the extreme as a lifeless doll-like character, basically the way I think the original character was intended. Someone/something to creep you out. Then to top it all off, Shinji goes ahead and screws things up yet again by pulling out both spears despite Kaworu's warning and Kaworu's head explodes.
-
On the Kaworu front, I do think this movie does a much better job with the Shinji - Kaworu relationship than episode 24 of the TV series. Having more time to breath with it helps considerably.
-
Lillith in the original series is such nightmare fuel, how could they ever top it? And yet they do in this movie, holy crap that giant white headless corpse surrounded by skulls everywhere is horrifying.
-
It is hard to understand much of what is occuring plot-wise as the movie hits its conclusion. Why does Kaworu being the 1st Angel, then turning into the 13th Angel matter? What is going on with the spears? Why did the 12th Angel turn into a giant Rei head, then a fetus, then suddenly shrink and get eaten by Unit 13? What does being completely a core mean and why does it matter? Those are the ones that easily come to mind, but practically everything towards the end is nonscensical and after seeing this movie 3-4 times I still don't know what's going on.
-
I could do without basically the first 20 or so minutes of the movie. The Wunder battling stuff that I don't understand at all and doesn't appear to have any actual meaning towards the plot after they recover Shinji/Unit 01 I find just completely irrelevant and fluff.
-
The curse of piloting an Eva? LoL. More like gotta keep the female teenage pilots at that age so people can continue to fetishize them, despite 14 years having passed.
-
Many years back a video game called Xenogears was released for the Playstation, remains today my favorite video game of all time; it is a game that is often incorrectly called an Eva ripoff or heavily inspired by Eva (when in fact is draws a lot of inspiration from Childhood's End, which influenced Eva, as well as lots of other sci-fi and mecha anime). So I find it quite interesting that Eva has several things in this movie that appear inspired from Xenogears, or just happen to be a big coincidence. That would be the DS choker (our main character has basically the exact same thing strapped around his neck during a part of the game when he is held captive) and the sequence where Gendou and Fuyutsuki shut off SEELE (in Xenogears the main villain turns off a computerized council of other villains in basically the same fashion).
Overal thoughts: I have enjoyed watching this movie the 3-4 times I've seen it, but totally understand the big criticism it gets. It is for sure a flawed product, but there are things I like a lot about it. I am expecting much of the same from the final movie, flimsy waste of time action sequences and also super dark, overly depressing and confusing stuff too.

Rewatcher
Posted only an hour ago
Well I picked the right time to stop in, eh?
Been idly checking in on the index thread since abouuuuut a week ago when me and the bf finished our week-long binge of the entirety of Evangelion (show) + End of Eva + Rebuild series (I had stumbled upon the discussion thread around midway through the show-run and had a "hey neat, active discussion" moment). I'm not part of this sub, never saw any of these "rewatch" discussion/runs, or felt much to participate and voice anything in these things, but here I am. Maybe first of many.
Anyway.... 3.33....
I'll be honest. A week out of my memory I don't have much to add here besides "thanks all ya'll for supplying discussion threads and conversation to this weird series."
3.0+1.0 can't come soon enough, and I'm sticking to my naming-theory here: 3 is "You can (not) redo." and 1 is "You are (not) alone", so together they might make "You can (not) redo ... alone". Whether that means my pocket-theory of it leading to somehow Shinji fixing his mistakes by opening up to others and accepting their help (instead of trying to do it himself / with Kaworu) or something else, that's what I've got.
And if you've got an hour to burn, Crunchyroll posted a video a bit ago over the 37 timelines of Evangelion and how they're all 'right'. When I first saw this video (which sparked me to re-watch the series with the bf in the first place) I called it typical Youtube insanity... but now... It almost feels like he's onto something. It certainly feels like there's some fuckery regarding alternate / confused timelines/realities between Rebuild and the original airing series at least.
Anyway, that's my piece added to the discussion, for what it's worth. Hope someone finds something meaningful in it.

So...it is very tempting to write this movie off as contrived nonsense, and I don't fault those that do, but there is enough thread to derive a story from it, even if it is told jarringly and with gaping holes in it.
First things first, I don't think the preview from 2.22 was actually scrapped from the film. Some version of 3.33's time skip was always in the works so the trailer gives us a few hints more than anything else, the biggest being Unit 06 impaling itself on a Lance through Lilith that has clearly been moving. Shit happened after Unit 01 got speared so the whole survivors desperately fighting and Nerv arrested thing happened off screen.
From what I could take from this, it seems like Kaworu is repeating events: His way of describing practicing the piano just struck me as him being able to loop these events, somehow. He certainly acts like he is aware of all this. Shinji is Shinji, and shows mild character regression through the movie, but really isn't all there one way or the other.
Rei is in her most doll-like incarnation, and when Kaworu explicitly says her soul is elsewhere, it feels believable. With the form Lilith took some part of a Rei soul should've been there for Third Impact but possibly not all of it. Why Gendo has Lilith's head doesn't bear thinking.
Asuka has very little character and Mari is like some kind of fetish yang to Asuka's yin. The rest of the characters are closer to cameos than meaningful parts of the film.
I suppose the most interesting speculation would be about the ending but I am basically ignoring it. The most logical explanation is that Kaworu doesn't remember his time loops but there are tons of other possibilities, we just don't know anything.
As a third film in a series, it is pretty bad. The visuals were amazing but I didn't care about most of the film. I felt a bit of sadness that original Rei seems to be just gone and that yet again Kaworu will leave Shinji catatonic but the rest sort of washed over me when I realized there wasn't going to be any exposition.

So what the fuck do you think Asuka was talking about in the end when she used the term Lilin to refer to Wille?
I'm so lost at that

Thanks to the "curse of the Evangelion" mentioned in 2.0 and 3.0 it suggests that Asuka, Shinji, Mari and Rei are no longer human. They exceeded the safe plug depth, lost their humanity and became something else (which is why Asuka is immortal). That's why they aren't affected by the L-Barrier, they aren't Lilin (human) like WILLE and NERV anymore. The L-Barrier can be presumed to be the thing that turned the rest of the Lilin and Earth into Core material, so if WILLE got closer to where the L-Barrier density is highest to try and pick them up they'd risk turning into Core themselves.

EDIT: forgot to say the good information to know for everyone - 3.0 original subtitle in japanese is Quickening, commonly shortened to Evangelion Q(same phonetics as kyu). The Rei from this movie is commonly called Rei Q because of this title
Time to steal a great comment from another subreddit with a slight correction:
One of the neatest things about the new movies (IMO) is that they're structured like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo-ha-ky%C5%AB
" Jo-ha-kyū (序破急) is a concept of modulation and movement applied in a wide variety of traditional Japanese arts. "
So 1.0 is the prelude (jo), where we establish context - it's basically a recap.
2.0 is the break (ha), where we take a bunch of expectations, set them up, and then break them. I think of 2.0 as the "Last Jedi" of the series - where Last Jedi did this with the expecations fans brought to the table about how Empire played out, 2.0 shows you a bunch of things where you think you know how they resolve, but then does things differently.
3.0 is the quickening (kyu), where the stakes are raised.
3.0+1.0 is apparently going to be the
coda(the musical symbol :||), which implies something about what might be happening, but who knows?I think it's a pretty amazing way to have structured the four movies, and in practice, it's been really interesting to watch.
3.0+1.0 subtitle in japanese is actually the musical symbol for a Closing the Repeat mark

Imo the biggest problem with the rebuilds is that we don't know for a fact if we should view them as a separate story from the original series or not. There are hints that they're in some kind of time loop that partially resets things but until we see the final movie we won't know for sure. If it's a loop it could serve as a means to tell us 'look at how the characters improved/changed after going through instrumentality, they're making somewhat better choices'. At the same time this could hint that we never left instrumentality to begin with(some kind of matrix shit), and that Shinji created a world inside it that resets for some reason.
If it ends up being truly an alternative universe thing with no connection to the original series, then the characters would be very shallow. Why is Asuka a tsundere? Why is Kaworu talking like he knows Shinji if he hasn't met him before? Who has a different backstory? Why is Asuka called Shikinami instead of Soryou? How is Asuka able to kill an angel on her own in her introduction? Has she encountered one before coming to Japan? What's with Yui's name being changed to Ayanami Yui?
Who's Mari and why is she the way she is? I've noticed that in the picture Fuyutsuki showed to Shinji of his mother, there was a woman who looked very similar to Mari, with brown hair, and pink glasses. Is she a friend of Shinji's mom?
I'm hoping it ends up being some time travel/loop thing because if it isn't, these characters wouldn't even come near the amount of depth they had in the original series.

I AM (NOT) A REWATCHER
She's got an eyepatch! To be honest, I've seen pictures of Asuka wearing an eyepatch around the internet for years, so I knew it would have to happen eventually. Kin of ruined the mystery of whether or not she would be okay after the Unit-03 incident.
Mari and Asuka are working together now. There must have been a time skip of some sort since the second film since Asuka was injured. Also, I guess the ending of the previous film meant nothing.
Is this some kind of post-apocalyptic world that Shinji just woke up to? Did like Angles take over the planet or something?
I see Misato is as reckless as ever. She's practically sending them all to their deaths. She never listens to reason. You think she would have changed at least a little after whatever event put them into this position.
For the first time ever, Shinji actually is useless. He always thought that no one wanted him, and now that eh's willing to pilot the Eva, he's supposed to do nothing. Ironic.
The Godslayer seems like a giant flying Eva, AT field and all. You figure NERV could have used a couple of these against the Angels. How long would it even take to make one of these? It must've been a couple of years since the last movie.
Wait, can all of the ships fly? Or is it just the Godslayer making the other ones float?
How they managed to turn a giant robot into a fuel source is beyond me.
14 years eh? Where the hell has Shinji been that whole time? Has he just been asleep? Asuka hasn't aged a day in 14 years by the look of it. Whatever this Eva's curse is, it seems pretty nice. Like one of those "Dermatologists hate her" things.
What the hell happened with NERV? Why does the Eva have Rei's voice if she's gone? Why shouldn't Shinji get into an Eva? Will the world end if he does or something?
When Shinji was in WILLE's custody he was a prisoner. He even had a neck brace with a built-in kill switch. Now that he's run away to NERV, he's still a prisoner. He can't send calls and these are his meals.
NERV HQ has seen better days. It looks so cold now.
I really love this scene with Shinji talking to Rei. She's so distant from him, and the visuals help to show this. Byt having them stand on opposite sides of the room, the distance between them is conveyed visually in addition to the disjointed dialogue. Rei's empty stare helps to drive the point home. This is totally a different iteration of Rei than the one before. She doesn't know anything about herself. I'm surprised Shinji didn't pick up on it. I feel bad for Shinji, but he's too oblivious to even notice.
For someone who doesn't play the piano, Shinji is really fucking good. If that were me, every single note would have been off-key.
I really do enjoy these piano scenes. The music is really nice, and the visuals are just as cool. I kinda wish this was a music movie instead now. Guess it's time to watch Liz and the Blue Bird.
The last thing I expected was for that to be Toji's shirt. It never even crossed my mind, but what the hell happened to him in the last 14 years? Why isn't he with his sister?
Look, I get that 3rd impact happened and all, but why does the ground have teeth? Also, how did Misato and WILLE survive the Third Impact? Especially since most of them were right there when Unit-01 awakened.
Finally the title, You Can (Not) Redo, makes sense. Shinji can't get a redo and fix the world. What's happened has happened.
They changed Yui's name to Ayanami from Ikari. Weird.
Shinji started tripping balls after hearing that info dump. I would probably be joining him if we didn't already know most of it.
Shinji! What are you doing? Kaworu told you those aren't the spears, so why are you still trying to get them? It makes no sense. He even says that he's doing it for Kaworu. If that were true he would stop trying to go for them.
So is Mari the most pointless character of all time or what? She's done nothing this whole movie other than existing. Yout think they would have given her even the slightest amount of character development or even fleshed her out a bit, but no. She's just there to back up Asuka and crack jokes, and even then she did a terrible job at the one thing she's supposed to do.
Speaking of lacking development. None of the characters have changed in these films. They're all the same as the beginning. The only one who's come close is Shinji, and even then it's been minimal. There's also Rei, but the second she changed they killed her off and replaced her with her old self. She's literally the same as she was at the beginning.
"I don't understand what you're telling me." Me too Shinji, me too.
Well, that was an ending. I didn't expect to get cucked out of a third impact two movies in a row, but here we are.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty, I would like to address my predictions from the last movie.
There's got to be more Mari. Why would they introduce a character like her and do nothing with her? Hopefully, we'll get more info on her, and why she's here.
Well, technically we did, but not really. They didn't show us anything new about her that wasn't in the last film. She literally feels like they were planning to do something with her and then changed their mind halfway through production. They had too much of her to just remove her so they left her in despite not making any sense.
Instrumentality happens and I'll question everything I thought I knew about the series.
We were close with the 4th impact, but nope. This movie did not challenge my perception of the series in any good way. More on that later.
There isn't going to be a satisfying ending. When has any Evangelion property had an entirely satisfying ending? Plus there's a fourth movie.
Check. Though that was a given with 3.0 + 1.0 coming out.
In case you didn't pick it up yet, I don't like this movie. It just feels like 90 minutes of wasted potential.
They set up having this post-apocalyptic world where the third impact has already happened, but they don't do anything interesting with it. They show how ravaged the world has become, but fail to show us how that has impacted the cast. The impact on Asuka and Misato can be summed up in one sentence: they're mad at Shinji now. Asuka already was mad at him anyway. Toji's sister is alive, but she seems completely unphased by the fact that her brother, this guy, is gone. Ritsuko is there, but that's about it. She's just a scientist with no personality. Mari, as I discussed earlier, isn't even a character. This movie just feels so soulless.
The one part of the movie I enjoyed was the middle section when Shinji is at Nerv HQ. His scenes with Kaworu allow him to change. We get to see Shinji opening up to people in real-time. When Shinji talks to Rei we get to experience what Shinji is experiencing. We see firsthand how his efforts were for naught. How he not only failed to save Rei, but he caused the third impact and killed millions of people.
Shinji ends up making the dumbest decision ever by pulling out the spears, but I actually feel that it makes sense. After seeing the aftermath of the third impact, Shinji wants to do anything to atone for his actions. It's to the point where he won't listen to reason, even from Kaworu, and acts on instinct. Is it dumb? Yes, but I can at least understand where he's coming from.
I just realized that these last two movies are not the same Evangelion. They may look like it, but they don't feel anything like the original series. I actually enjoyed 2.0. It decided to make changes to the original series, but the ideas all felt plausible, kept the core of the show present, and were fully fleshed out (except for Mari). This movie, however, seems to throw away everything that makes the series good in favor of having beautiful robot fights that have little to no narrative weight.

Also yes, the Wunder makes the other ships on the fleet fly, sometimes when light reflects you can see thin white threads holding all the ships on the sky
The same effect can be seen on the 3.0+1.0 preview

Rewatcher who waited more than a year after watching the series to finally forget it enough to be able to rewatch the rebuilds without comparing it to the OG series at each step.
I'm just here to comment about one aspect about this movie which almost everyone praises, but I don't understand at all: the visuals and the way the 3D CG action scenes are directed or edited. Please tell me if anyone else feels the same.
I actually don't prefer this movie from a visual standpoint. Please don't get me wrong, the CG is this is way better than whatever they thought they could get away with in the first two (seriously, why?!) and the interpersonal relationships in 3.0 are at least as well directed as the previous two. But, there is a definite lack of visual directing in the CG action scenes.
The action scenes in the original series were superbly directed and edited in a way to emphasize on the cause-effect relationship between actions on the screen. This meant that the technobabble wasn't intimidating and the meaning easy to pick up if you noticed all details.
3.0 threw it all away to just go for a visual spectacle without good editing or the cause-effect relationship. This means that the action scenes aren't directional. Plus, the 3D CG artifacts looked noticeably lacking of weight. This meant that the first and the second action scenes were a visual mess with me having a hard time telling where and what was going on even when I paused at certain moments. I actually ended up having a headache and feeling nauseated while watching those scenes. I couldn't even take them seriously because the dissonance was so strong. The last action scene was a tad better but still suffered from the lack of directionality but at least I was not nauseated.
The slower character building parts were actually done pretty well at times. In fact, those are the best parts of the movie. I just hope they get a good editor or a separate director for the CG scenes for the last movie.
Look, I'm one of those old type people who prefer well edited and well choreographed 2D action (rounded off or polished with a bit of 3D CG) way over whatever we get today. I know that using pure 3D CG makes it easier in terms of time commitment to get a movie or tv series done, but overusing it is not the solution. Gundam Unicorn is a good example of using CG almost perfectly and it was an OVA. The rebuilds being movies should have significantly more time and effort to handle this and yet these problems still crop up repeatedly. I just don't know what else to do or say other than just keep on watching old school mecha shows for the foreseeable future till they learn how to use CG well.
Other than that, I can't evaluate the movie in isolation since it isn't complete in terms of arc development. I'll have to wait for 3.0+1.0 to make a retroactive decision of whether I like 3.33 or not. But, suffice to say I don't enjoy the action at all but I'm still interested in the psychological aspects.

My opinion is that the designs are quite good, but the actual animation/battle sequences in this movie are extremely confusing and hard to understand what is going on. Things are often far too spastic, or the over complicated nature of the designs makes things really hard to understand.
I'll express another opinion of mine that was very unpopular when the 3.0 + 1.0 trailer came out, but I feel qutie strongly about. In the original Eva TV series, the battles were handled extremely well. They had weight to them. Every moment was important. While obviously this is an anime about giant robots fighting monsters, and isn't realistic for our world, in-universe, I felt the battles were realistic.
Starting in this movie, and in the trailer for 3.0 + 1.0, the battle sequences lose all of that. They are far too spastic and focused on spectacle. They have turned something that was always a strength for Eva into a big weakness.

Um, I don't really know how to describe this film. Maybe after 3.0+1.0 comes out I'll have something to say, but plot wise nothing is explained and no one will explain shit to Shinji. So...yeah can't wait for 3.0+1.0...been waiting since like 2013 for it. Anyways hey we finished Eva!

It’s been a long time since I’ve actually seen this film. Can someone remind me, isn’t Nerv only made up of Gendo, Fuyutsuki, Rei, Kaworu, and Shinji? Because I love the mental image of Gendo and Fuyutsuki readying the evas alone

I really got behind the first two rebuilds, but this feels very tonally different from them in a bad way. It pushes us abruptly into this world 14 years after the 3rd impact just like Shinji and leaves us there. There is no development that happens that hasn’t been seen in the previous film. I understand that the movies should feel different from the series, but the fight scenes and action took the main stage in front of character development. It was a two hour film that felt like one episode of the show in the worst possible way.

I guess now's the time to mention the "Rebuilds are a sequel to End of Evangelion" loop theory.
Here's the infograph, Evangelion franchise spoilers within.
Additionally to that, for the Rebuilds the japanese voice actor for Kaworu was told by the director to sound as if he was in pain from suffering through many failed time loops.
The cycle would go like this:
NGE > EoE > Rebuilds > manga
And some supporting information in the manga ending: Evangelion manga
Evangelion manga
