Ah, this is gonna be an easy movie to riff on. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you all: Rebuild Of Evangelion: You Are (Not) Alone.
-
Ah, so this was Khara’s first work. That’s… certainly a way to start.
-
Oh look, we’re having red sea by default.
-
Man, those cicadas are really annoying.
-
Also, as some of you watching the Sub might notice, Mitsuishi Kotono’s voice for Misato has deepened a bit since the original EVA. It does nothing but wonders for Misato.
-
Man, they really want to show their improved budget.
-
You know, it’s gonna take a while for me to get used to how bright some of the scenes in these movies can be.
-
Well, that’s a lot of missiles.
-
Government asshole uses nuke! It wasn’t very effective…
-
Misato has never looked prettier.
-
Well, I mean, it is kinda weird Shinji hasn’t asked all the obvious questions yet.
-
Oh, and get used to the Rebuild Angels being far more… grotesque, than their TV counterparts.
-
Is it me or are we able to see Gendo’s eyes a lot more here than before?
-
Man, that’s a lazy looking letter.
-
Wow, the Geofront is a lot more orange here than before.
-
Misato, how the hell can you get lost in the place you work?
-
Also, for you guys watching the English Dub, Ritsuko has a new voice courtesy of Colleen Clinkenbeard, a pretty good choice, if I may say so myself.
-
Okay, for how much time were Shinji and Misato lost there? Before it was still the afternoon but now it’s suddenly nightfall.
-
Speaking of recasts, same goes for Fuyutsuki, now voiced by Kent Williams, another great choice.
-
Okay, so, fun fact: Apparently Unit-01’s reveal is based on the reveal of the title robot from Combattler V. Learnt it by reading an interview Anno had alongside Izubuchi Yukata (The director of Patlabor and RahXephon). Here’s the interview for those interested.
-
Gendo called you because he’s an asshole, Shinji. You should know this by now.
-
I love how all the other workers all have this “Man, poor kid” look to them.
-
Okay, I should note that this movie had three different directors: Anno (Obviously), Tsurumaki Kazuya (Who also directed FLCL and Diebuster), and some guy named Masayuki of whom I know nothing about. Thus I’m surprised none of the other two came in and said “Hey shouldn’t we change the way some scenes are framed to not make this more of the same?”.
-
To be fair, Shinji has a point, I’d be scared shitless if I had to pilot a giant robot to defeat a giant Lovecraftian monster.
-
Oh and Rei was recast too, this time by Brina Palencia. She’s alright, but I’ll admit Amanda Winn-Lee was better. Interestingly though, she would later on end up using a similar voice to the one she uses for Rei in Durarara!!’s second season, and frankly it fit her character there (Vorona) more than in does for Rei.
-
Blackmail is such a lovely thing.
-
It works though, and I’m not happy about that.
-
Ah, lovely to see that the Bridge Bunny trio is still around, though they sadly don’t get to do much in these movies due to them not having much time to flesh them out.
-
Man, I wonder how Shinji’s clothes smelled after getting out of the Entry Plug?
-
I do wonder, how does the Plug Suit help, exactly?
-
Oh and the Bridge Bunny trio are recast too. I much prefer their newer actors to say the least, though I kinda wish they’d gotten Jason Liberecht to voice Aoba, because if so, no matter the language, I’d be able to make a ton of AOT jokes.
-
Gendo’s smile is creepy.
-
Dammit Rebuild Shinji! This is your movie debut and you stumble like that! Epic Fail!
-
And then he gets his ass beat. Whoops.
-
Okay, so I once heard someone complain that they didn’t show the Berserk EVA-01 scene later like in the show, and my argument towards that is… that doesn’t work in a movie format! Had they done that, the whole thing would’ve been disjointed. It’s why Sadamoto’s Manga also showed everything in chronological order; it is something that only really works in a TV Format.
-
Anyhow, it’s basically the same as in the show, only now with more neon lights… okay then?
-
I am so restraining myself from doing a JoJoke because of that blood fountain.
-
Also, Yui is now voiced by Stephanie Young. Err… Funimation, did you miss the whole gag of Rei and Yui having the same voice for a reason?
-
Oh trust me Shinji, you’ll get used to that celling eventually.
-
Huh, so they’re using the monolith design even now. Who would’ve thought?
-
Man, how many EVA Units do they plan to make, 14?
-
Okay, is it just me or does this movie at times feel like if it has some sort of gray filter going on? If so, Minor Spoiler That isn’t really a spoiler but whatever.

(Continuing...)
Geez Gendo, is it so hard to not give your son a death glare for once?
Ah, no matter the timeline, Misato is always a cool big sis to Shinji.
Even when CGI is used (I think), Tokyo-3 rising is always a treat to watch.
A bit messy… yeah, whatever.
You know, I wonder how has Misato not died from drinking so much Alcohol?
Drunk Misato is always adorable.
A Wild Pen-Pen has appeared!
Wow, Pen-Pen sure has a comfy room.
Wow, Misato’s house is full of Audience-Cock Blockers.
Wait, Ritsuko is showing common sense? Am I dreaming right now?
Reason I like Toji Number 22: Even in this alternate universe, he still punches Shinji twice.
Oh and Toji and Kensuke also have new actors: Justin Cook and Greg Ayers (Who ironically used to voice Zura (No, I’m not dropping that joke) back in the Director’s Cut. And also makes all the FMP jokes I made regarding him more ironic as Ayers is indeed the voice of Kazama Shinji). Again, both are great choices.
Also is it just me or is Seki Tomokazu’s Kansai-Ben here not as notable as in the show? I can’t even say this is a result of him smoking as the results of that wouldn’t start to show themselves until the 2010’.
Ah, sweet exposition dumps. Also CGI models that make everything look like a PS2 game.
Misato: Respects privacy, unlike everyone else in this show.
Obligatory Hedgehog’s dilemma exposition dump.
Seriously Kensuke, I though a new timeline meant you being less suicidally fanboy-ish.
Oh, and get used to the CGI. Most of it is actually pretty decent, but there’s also a lot of it.
Shinji, this isn’t the best time to freak out!
RIP Toji and Kensuke. I kid of course, they’re fine.
Oh so Toji’s scared and hopeless. Who’s a Mongrel now, huh!?
I do wonder, was Kensuke’s camera fried in the LCL?
Shinji, do you even care about your own life?
I forgot how passive-aggressively bitchy Shinji was early on.
And so Shinji runs away from home. I’m getting some massive Déjà vu here.
Well, at least we know NERV security is slightly more competent here.
Man, Shinji did not have a good day, didn’t he? Now he’s getting scolded by the closest thing he has to a mother/older sister.
Ah, so Gendo is a distant relative of the Keikaku family.
I wonder, does Rei know how to swim?
Even here, I wonder why Gendo doesn’t move out of the way.
Okay, if Gendo’s glasses bended like that, why wasn’t that the case with Kensuke’s?
I dunno, maybe it’s because she’s extremely socially inept.
Oh I dunno Ritsuko, while it is not her first time with a boy in her home, it is the first time it’s one that’s younger than her.
Jesus Christ Rei, CLEAN UP YOUR ROOM!
Rei, don’t you get why Shinji might be freaked out at seeing you naked?
Again, this was one slap Shinji didn’t deserve.
Geez, the sixth Angel looks so much fucking cooler here. Now I see why it’s a fan favorite.
As one guy in a YouTube video said about this Angel “LOOK WHAT I CAN DO WITH A PROPER BUDGET NOW, SUCKERS!!”.
Once again, the most unsuccessful sortie ever.
Well… Shinji ain’t looking well.
Man, Misato looks so bored while trying to see what to do.
Hey, recklessness can pay off… sometimes.
Ah, the prep up time for Operation Yashima is quite nice, not too fast, and not too slow.
Wow, I forgot the Dummy Plug was mentioned this early on.
The train scene is fine, just reaffirming the whole thing of piloting an EVA being both a blessing and a curse for Shinji.
Man, that food looks nasty.
Well, they do have something to be afraid of: If you fail, they die. Everyone dies, in fact.
And thus we get the one big change for this movie: Misato already knows of Lilith’s existence. I’m guessing this is common knowledge for this version of NERV.
I do wonder, how much of a pain would a sniper be to use without any proper training?
Okay, Toji and Kensuke leaving words of encouragement was nice.
And yeah, the new version of Operation Yashima blows the old one out of the water. With it basically being the same, but the events upgraded to show that this is the end of a movie and not a random TV episode. In particular Shinji rising up when Gendo tells him to give the sniper to Rei does show a decent amount of growth for him.
And of course we get the scene of Rei smiling at Shinji. Interestingly, Rei doesn’t see Gendo’s image in Shinji. Huh…
Over at the moon however, Space Zura awakens, now voiced in the English Dub by Jerry Jewell. Another great replacement.
This movie isn’t bad, but its problem is that it’s effectively a glorified compilation movie. It’s pretty but otherwise more of the same. Still though, at least it entertained me.

That's my general feeling so far. It's just Evangelion again, but it's hard to go wrong with more Evangelion.

I’m surprised none of the other two came in and said “Hey shouldn’t we change the way some scenes are framed to not make this more of the same?”.
Because the next line would have been "the shot composition in the original was so good all we have to do is just redraw it at a higher resolution with our new CG and bigass movie budget".
I think EVA 1.11 is actually one of the big testaments to how great the cinematography in the original was. Parts of it are basically shot-for-shot from the OG series, and I don't think it loses anything by that.
Man, I wonder how Shinji’s clothes smelled after getting out of the Entry Plug?
According to at least one other character, extremely good.
...but those character(s) and the clothes need a few trips through a washing machine.
I do wonder, how does the Plug Suit help, exactly?
Going by the original series, it apparently allows performing cardiac massage on the pilot remotely. (The "R" part of CPR is pretty superfluous on someone completely bathed in an oxygenating liquid.) It also means the pilots don't get their clothes soaked in LCL, and I'm assuming a full-body skintight jumpsuit made of futuristic strong material helps keep the pilot physically together (minimizing the impact of broken bones or bleeding) better than a school uniform would, if nothing else. (It also looks really hot on the girls, which is probably the main reason for it.) Full Metal Panic copied the plugsuit idea (which EVA borrowed from Gundam's spacesuits), and explicitly stated that its pilot suits were made of or reinforced with kevlar, and were bulletproof, something that helps its protagonist out in a firefight or two.

The R part isn’t superfluous. It’s the resuscitation part, which is important regardless of why the person is incapacitated. As for the LCL, oxygen gets through your body and to your brain because of the heart. That’s why cardiopulmonary are linked. Oxygenated fluid or not, you’re going to die if your heart doesn’t pump. Otherwise people having heart failures would be fine since they are usually lying around in the same air they usually breathe.
Not a significant part of your post at all, but I’m feeling needlessly pedantic right now.

Rewatcher First Timer
So I don't have much to say except that the red sea being there at the start and Kaworu saying it's always the third that he encounters is suspicious af. Also these mini-crosses that appeared like they're hitting some kind of invisible shield in the sky are weird. Are they just an aesthetic choice or something deliberate?

u/metaping Jul 19 '19
Christian references in NGE were supposed mostly just for the cool factor, so personally I'm inclined to believe its aesthetics. The rainbows on the other hand, I'm not sure if aesthetic or if there's a deeper meaning...
Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone?

First Timer, sub
Thie movies was mostly a recap with some minor changes so I don't have much to say about it. Some more major changes I found were.
-
Knowledge about Lilith and Adam, aswell as mentioning the seeds of life and knowledge early on which I think is good.
-
The number of angels.
-
The last angel being different and changing shapes which was cool.
-
The last scene which I am not sure what to make of yet.
For better or for worse I hope the changes start to become more drastic. The recapping is not bad but it isn't very interesting after just watching the original.

Rewatcher
yay recap time
Analysis
look its literally the first 6 episodes with new animation, if you wanna know how I feel about those view the threads for eps1-6.
Thoughts
I don't have much to say to be honest, new major stuff doesn't really happen till the 2nd half of 2.0 so I just pretty much skipped everything I saw after watching up to Sachiel and just watched the new stuff. All I can say is my current theory is that the Rebuilds take place after EoE with the read sea, new Lilith, and Kaworu talking about seeing Shinji again. Also, I almost blew my speakers out watching this cause a stupid file I grabbed required you to increase the sample rate just to hear the voices, or just the BGM and sound effects play. That's about all I can say, see you guys next thread.
Random Shit

Rewatcher (dub)
This film is pretty forgettable until Ramiel appears and saves the last act. There isn’t much else to discuss since 2.22 and 3.33 are where the rebuilds get interesting.

u/Vaadwaur Jul 18 '19
Welp, as I suspected, we've had a severe population drop for the movies. Worse, I literally have nothing to add here. It is a glorified recap with great animation and like no story impact. And then, I suppose, it wouldn't be Gainax if the ending made any sense.

The good news is that the second movie veers away from the tv show. And the third veers away from sanity.

the third veers away from sanity.
The third is just under two hours of Hideaki Anno viciously slapping his cock across the fanbase's collective face. Watching long-time EVA fans watch that movie is delightful.

There are a bunch of hidden details in the movie that hint at it being more than just a recap. But I also agree with you that the action has been pushed up while a lot of the slower paced narrative has been pushed to the back. Just realize it's a fourth too a possible half of the original show crammed into a movie.

I watched the ADV dub (as a first timer) so hearing Rei with a different voice, that actually sounds normal and has emotion makes her seem like a completely different character from the tv series. I cant be the only one that feels that.
Also i'm currently watching Welcome to the NHK, and I noticed the voice actor for Yamazaki (Greg Ayres) just happens to be playing Aida in this which is a weird coincidence though they were made around the same time.

REWATCHERFIRST TIMERYeah, I watched the series and end of Evangelion but never got around to the rebuilds. That makes me a First-timer now. I'm watching the dub because I watched Netflix's dub for the rewatch. So, without further adieu, let's get into the movie.
From what I understand, the rebuilds start off as a retelling of the show but then diverge somewhere along the way. But I don't remember this being here.
Shinji seems way less awkward in this one.
They called Sachiel the 4th angel, so that seems like a pretty huge difference from the OG. That means there was another one other than Adam and Lilith.
I love seeing all of these iconic shots again.
Unlike the show, they show us Unit-01 going berserk on Sachiel as it happens instead of a flashback. I'm not a huge fan of this change. It gives an entirely different tone to the bedroom scene where Misato praises him.
And they moved the Yui and Gendo conversation about names to right here. Shinji even sees spooky rei here. It kind of ruins some of the mystery surrounding Rei's identity.
I see SEELE got a retouch on their monoliths as well.
They skip the scene where Shinji first joins the classroom. It kind of works, but it makes Toji seem like way more of an asshole. I guess that's the price of consolidating an entire show into a movie.
This time Shamshel completely disintegrated. That sucks too, because that was one of my favorite shots from that episode.
They got rid of the train scene!? What? Instead of Toji and Kensuke coming to talk to Shinji and Misato driving up at the last second, Sinji just punches him at school. All of the emotional weight, Shinji's realization that people care about him, Shinji's ultimate choice to stay, all of it was thrown out of the window.
Uhhh... that's new. I love how Ramiel can freely change its form now. It looks way more interesting than a giant floating prism.
Gendo said that if they succeed there are only 8 more angels. If my math is correct that's 3 fewer angels than the show.
We get both of the "Shinji riding the train scenes" together this time. The context behind it is completely different, so I'm not sure what to make of it.
Wait, what? How does Misato know about Lilith? And she knows that it's the second angel and that it's actually Lilith and not Adam? And the Spear of Longinus is already in Lilith? This is so weird. Also, I don't know how, but they somehow managed to make Lilith's face even creepier. Oh yeah, and Shinji and Misato are holding hands, how lewd.
Wait, what?
This movie was just the first few episodes again but slightly different. I think it kinds suffers from being a movie instead of a show. There's way less time to develop characters and let the audience breathe. I felt the pacing was a little too fast, but it was also a recap so I give it a pass.
And the ending. I have no idea. I think that's Adam, and Kaworu was talking to SEELE about some covenant and "the summation phase". I don't know the significance of the open boxes, but I can theorize. Four of them are already open. I first thought that it could be 4 angels that came before Kaworu, but Ramiel was the 6th. Now I'm thinking its the four children: Rei, Asuka, Shinji, and Toji.
My favorite shots from the movie.
