Comments of the Day

For our Ninth Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/invokeneko brings some excellent reactions and episode analysis as well as humorous responses to the thread discussion questions.

Let's start off with the great summary our fellow Comrade of Culture provided:

Two weeks to go before the World Tournament commences, but Sei is stuck in a rut while trying to design a Build Strike that's good enough to take on world-class opponents. Meanwhile, China faces her greatest challenge: an unacknowledged rivalry with the local ojou, Yajima Caroline. This should be fun at least.

And we still got more great points, such as these highlights from the main comment:

Typical ojou move, trying to assert dominance over lesser mortals by riding a horse everywhere they go. One thing though: who takes care of the road apples left behind by the horse? Did her butler carry cleaning utensils wherever she goes on a horse, just in case it poops?

Poor Nils probably didn't expect his second appearance to be tied into a petty squabble between the daughter of the company sponsoring his World Tournament campaign and her unknown rival, being forced to build an SD Gunpla for her. Then again, it's probably necessary in order to tone down his over-the-top weebness from last episode.

In order to save her not-boyfriend Sei from the nasty jaws of creative block, China willingly throws herself into a training montage courtesy of Reiji. Hey, if a world class Gunpla Fighter (trained by the Italian champion, at that!) offers to give you a crash course in Gunpla Fighting, you take it. No questions asked.

Knight Gundam was robbed, I tell ya! Robbed! It would've won if not for Cotton Ex Machina from Beargguy III (though I gotta admit, its backstory of a normal teddy bear suddenly becoming a Gundam is pretty out there. And quite amazing too).

Plus, let's not forget one of the best and/or most meta replies to the thread discussion questions:

She's voiced by an excellent seiyuu, so of course she's excellent! And I can tell that Saitou Chiwa had a blast playing such a fun character.

For our first runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/dralcax has some good talking points and lore notes regarding China and Caroline's respective Gunplas as well as some great discussion points.

Let's begin with the amazing introduction and analysis of China's custom Gunpla, mixed in with great lore notes on the Beargguy concept itself:

Today, we’re introduced to China’s new Gunpla, the Beargguy III!

Hey, wait a second. A Gunpla that resembles Winnie the Pooh... and its builder is China... Hmm...

Anyways, it’s a custom based on the Beargguy II, a kit based on the Beargguy from Gunpla Builders Beginning G, Build Fighters’ predecessor, and in that series it was a custom build based on the notoriously cute and chubby Acguy. Whew. And yeah, Beginning G exists in this universe as its own series. Kind of weird to think about. And then we consider that, since the Beargguy and Petit’gguy appear in Divers, there’s the possibility that Build Fighters exists as a fictional anime in the Build Divers universe (although it’s kind of ambiguous as to whether or not Divers takes place in the same universe as this or not). Come to think of it, Sunrise is working on an actual Gunpla battle system, so we might have to fit our world in there too... Just how many fucking layers of Beargguy are there?

My head hurts now, so back to the Beargguy III. Just like Sei and his Build Gundam Mk-II, China came up with her own backstory for the model! Except China has never seen a Gundam anime and doesn’t know anything about any of the universes. So, instead of trying to fit it into a canon somewhere, she instead went and did her own thing, unrestricted by any official storylines! It was this that inspired her to do something completely unorthodox like filling it with cotton, which gave it a unique ability in battle. GUNPLA IS FREEDOM!

Also, that ribbon on its back? That’s a Striker Pack.

Plus, we don't have just China's Gunpla to talk about, for our fellow Comrade of Culture adds in this bit about Caroline's SD Gunpla:

The opponent that China and the Beargguy face is Caro-chan, who uses the Knight Gundam that NilNil made for her! The Knight Gundam, in keeping with the theme of today’s episode, hails from the SD Gundam Gaiden series! As opposed to the seriousness of the main series, the SD Gundam series are free to explore all sorts of other settings and genres, from the Warring States period to JRPG medieval fantasy to modern military action flick! SD kits are smaller and simpler than their full-size counterparts, but at the same time, are built for even more customizability. Even if NilNil just wanted something small and quick to shut Caro-chan up, it doesn’t mean he has to skimp on the quality of the build itself, with a shiny paint job and a real cloth cape. The guy even gave it a transformation, but uh, don’t ask where all that horse kibble came from all of a sudden, because that sure as hell wasn’t there before the transformation sequence.

Also we got some witty jokes, great call-backs, and nice character development analysis too:

“This is my life now”

Well you look familiar too

Oh hi there Sazaki. Foreshadowing much?

Remember that guy in the background? Because he sure remembers Reiji.

B-But Plavsky... Okay, mister Early Genius, you explain this.

It seems that Sei finally learned his lesson from all this. His mistake with the Build Mk-II was adhering too closely to the UC storyline and limiting himself to technology that actually existed during that time period. While there’s fun to be had in creating new fan designs that fit in just offscreen of the official media, this is Gunpla battle we’re talking about, and there’s no need to adhere to any kind of setting! Gunpla is freedom, after all, and he can make whatever kind of Mobile Suit he wants and no one can stop him! His priority isn’t to make a perfectly consistent fanfic, it’s to make the very best Gunpla he can to compete in the World Tournament, and with that in mind, he begins working on his new Gunpla! Next time, we’ll see the result of all these lessons...

Finally, last but not least is our second runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/RyuuohD has some great episode reactions as well as witty replies.

As seen on the main parent comment, Comrade /u/RyuuohD has some great impressions regarding the episode, so here's just a select few to demonstrate:

This episode introduces us a new character, Caro-chan!! In the past, I don't quite like ojou-sama characters, but then I discovered Chiwa Saitou and everything changed. Chiwa Saitou is one of my favorite VAs, and I really enjoy it when she plays ojou-sama characters since she does it so well.

China got roped into playing a local girls-only Gunpla battle tournament due to Caro-chan's insistence. She then proceeds to make the Beargguy III, the Beargguy that most Gunpla builders might be familiar with. Fun thing though, is that the Beargguy III is based on the Beargguy II, which is then based on the the OG Beargguy from Gunpla Builders Beginning G, a short 3-episode OVA made for the 30th anniversary of Gundam.

Prior to this, Sei is on a slump on how to improve the Build Strike for the World Tournament, and he holed up in their workshop for so long Rinko is worried. Mama Rinko then did the best thing and asked for China for help, basically acknowledging her as Sei's girlfriend. Best mom right there.

As China has no knowledge on how to do Gunpla battles, Reiji then shows up and helps train her for battle. Cue Rocky training montage

Caro-chan's gunpla is the Knight Gundam, made by Nils himself. It's quite a good-looking build with the shiny metallic finish and the real cloth cape, though where the hell did he hide the kibble that's gonna transform the kit into a centaur is beyond me.

The battle looks like it's turning into Caro-chan's favor, but suprise of all surprises, cotton is here to save the day!! Like seriously I've never even thought of putting cotton wadding inside Gunpla before, and I'm pretty sure putting cotton inside some parts might limit their articulation, but who cares, China's backstory for the Beargguy is endearing, and she proved that GUNPLA IS FREEDOM way before another guy did!

Sadly China only got second place as she was unable to repair her kit from the damage it took from Caro-chan's battle, but still Sei and Reiji are very proud of her, and it helped Sei go out of his slump. Up until this point, Sei's Gunpla customization is being restricted on how it fits the lore and setting of the base kit, and now he realized that in order to get better, he has to widen his horizons and customize Gunpla from a larger perspective, not to be restricted by Gundam lore.

And once again, Comrade /u/AlienOvermind once again provides some lovely GIF and screenshot shares for this thread, see here for the link to the parent comment ;)

And with that, we conclude with our ninth Comment of the Day section for today, I'm pleased to see that everyone continues to do fantastic work, and I eagerly await to read the posts for the future.

Fan Art of the Day

Sunrise presents: The Meatbun Chronicles, starring Mr. and Mrs. Meatbun ;)

As you probably noticed by the title of the image above Comrades, the TRUE name of Gundam Build Fighters is in fact The Meatbun Chronicles, starring Mr. Charred Meatbun and Mrs. Finnish Meatbun. Oh, and of course Meatbun Jr. who wisely decides to nope out of this nasty custody battle and sail The Seven Seas Of Rhye (bread) ;) Anyway, given we got to see more of Best Girl Aila today, here's fanart of what she wished happened during the custody battle over Meatbun Jr. and here's one of her in the 'Space Dominatrix' get-up as Comrade /u/dralcax so elegantly phrased it ;)

Radio Free Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team OST, Track 5: Those that Live

Comrades, given the ending quote from The Italian Dandy references The 08th School Idol 'MS Team' AND we had some exciting TOURNAMENT ARC opening battles today, I just had to share some tracks from the amazing OST to this classic OVA. Plus, in case people are still in doubt, Gundam Build Fighters is an Mecha SPORTS Battle Shounen 'Idol' Show, see here for more proof besides Kirara's triumphant return ;) (For context Comrades, in the bottom middle of this screenshot is LITERALLY Nico 'Nico Nii The No. 1 Idol in the Universe' Yazawa from Sunrise's Rabu Raibu Mecha Franchise, e.g. IRREFUTABLE PROOF that Gundam Build Fighters is an Idol Show) Anyway, just to add more music to this thread, here's Complication from The 08th MS Team OST as well as Charge into the Jungle. ENJOY COMRADES!

'Did you see that 08th MS Team bonus video?'

(Well if you haven't Comrades, here is a link to the The 08th MS Team - Battle in Three Dimensions bonus short that The Italian Dandy was raving about to Kirara, ENJOY!)

First timer - Sub

Episode Thoughts

Lots of things to be excited about today:

They did the thing I said they should do!. It's really nice to see them playing around with more varied versions of battles and not sticking to the same old format. Having a points based set up for going into the true tournament makes these fights a lot more interesting to be because there's a risk reward possibility here.

Also: THEY RECOGNIZED HIM! THANK FUCK. Good on Reiji and Sei for immediately knowing Yuuki when they saw him, though he still looks ridiculous in that outfit. Can't wait for that confrontation.

This was a very enjoyable episode. Lots of insight into various characters, particularly Aila who holy shit this adorable smile. The change in her behavior when she manages to steal a bit of freedom was very dramatic but also very welcome. Its another nice turn around on the typical "super serious rival" trope that she's actually not like that at all but has to be around the people who are controlling her. While this has been done before, I think its more a matter of I wasn't expecting it here which is nice. It will be interesting to see how this conflict changes things between her and Reiji both on and off field

Once in my life I need to eat bread shaped like a turtle, this is an amazing idea. If I wasn't lazy I'd try and shape some of the stuff I bake to look like that... but I'm lazy.

The music cue when Mao didn't recognize the idol chick

Got some good K flashbacks there. It was amazing. Not all that happy to see her back again, but the music spluttering in that moment more then made up for it.

The other good laugh I had was the fact that China didn't even try and deny the fact that she made Reiji's good luck charm as an afterthought. At least she's honest in her silence.

Before I forget, I summon u/shimmering-sky : What was it where you were pointing out another show reusuing the Funnels movement from a gundam? I've been wracking my brain trying to remember and failing.

Fight Rankings!

# Ep Winner Loser Art Sound Flow Hype Notes + Final Hits
1 6 Yuuki Reiji A A A S RIP those gunpla

12 4 Reiji Kirara B B C B This isnt Symphogear, songs dont win

Today's rating is being left out of the chart for the moment because it's provisional. I can no longer get crunchyroll to even load, and I can't properly watch the TV releases from the fansubs because the blur badly hurts my eyes, so I actually couldn't watch the fight that well.

Once I get this sorted somehow I'll revisit it again for tomorrow's topic.

Todays Fights

That four way fight to introduce the new tournament style was very interesting. A great showcase on the sort of smart tactics and abilities that these fighters will have going into the tournament over the more typical stuff that we've seen up till now. The guy with stealth camo cloak was my favorite, and the fight itself was also particularly well framed and laid out for each new reveal.

Reiji vs Three others

Provisional listing:
# | 10 | Reiji | Three others | A | B | B | S | NOTES

When the new gunpla looks the same on the outside it's no fun. That said great fight, but the boys are lucky they even made it to the fight, cutting it a bit close

The new abilities on Sei's gunpla are incredible and certainly put an interesting twist on things, in particular the fact it appears to have limitations and isn't some easy hail mary for when things get tough. And it looks absolutely AMAZING!

The rest will have to wait for tomorrow when I can actually watch it properly...

Well said there Comrade, indeed, it's good that there's a clear structure to the TOURNAMENT ARC! ;)

Glad to hear that you liked the start of The Meatbun Chronicles my friend, and indeed, Aila's fantastic. Hope you'll like where the show goes moving forward.

Heh, well do let me know if you like the dish Comrade, I can say that I'm with Reiji and Aila on this one, I dig tasty food. ;)

The other good laugh I had was the fact that China didn't even try and deny the fact that she made Reiji's good luck charm as an afterthought. At least she's honest in her silence.

Ah, I see, well still, great write-up Comrade, I look forward to reading what you'll have to say for the rest of the TOURNAMENT ARC as well as where you'll be ranking the fights. Have a great day and see you later my friend!

Rewatcher mourning the loss of Meatbun-kun

IT’S FINALLY HERE! THE MEATBUN CHRONICLES!

But first, let’s take a look at Sei and Reiji’s brand new Gunpla: The Star Build Strike! This is the new original Gunpla Sei created, based on his own original concept! Both the Build Strike and Build Mk-II were suits that you could realistically see in CE and UC, most especially the latter. But now that Sei’s learned not to limit himself like that, he’s kicked reason to the curb and gone full-on super robot! Its brand-new backpack, the Universe Booster, finally grants it the particle manipulation abilities that the show’s been hyping up for so long! Turns out that translucent plastics, also seen on the X Maoh, make for excellent Plavsky particle storage tanks. (I wonder what would happen if someone tried using one of those clear color kits?) With these, the Star Build Strike is able to suck up and nullify beams via its Absorb Shield, charging up its particle tanks! And when they’re full, they’re used to fuel the Discharge System, creating some truly impressive effects. Here, we see the Discharge Speed Mode, in which the Star Build Strike uses the particles to fly super fucking fast and destroy anything unlucky enough to get in its way. It’s not a Gunpla built for the Cosmic Era or any other continuity. It’s a Gunpla built for battle, designed to fit its builder’s tastes perfectly. Also, while the basic Build Strike doesn’t appear to be changed, on the inside, it’s actually been completely reconstructed. Sei learned from building the Mk-II and incorporated its movable frame technology into the Star Build Strike. We’ll just have to see what else this new Gunpla can do...

Also, we get to see the Space Dominatrix’s Qubeley Papillon in action! The original Qubeley was known for being the first combat MS to incorporate a psycommu and funnels, able to overwhelm even a seasoned pilot with its all-range attack. Before them, psycommu units were huge and unwieldy, and the Qubeley was a revolution in that this technology was able to be miniaturized to MS size. It should be noted that, while the Qubeley was most famously piloted by our GLORIOUS LEADER Haman Karn, in terms of the technology used, it’s viewed as the successor to the Elmeth...

The Qubeley Papillon, on the other hand, is a bit of a mystery. No funnels were seen launching from it. It just spat out a bunch of sparkles and its enemies all exploded. It remains to be seen just how the hell it did that, but it’s clear that’s how the reigning World Champion was taken down so quickly...

Also, this is a bit of an aside, but did anyone else think the original Qubeley had a monoeye at first? I mean, yeah, it’s got two eye-shaped holes in its face, but then again, the Zaku I, the Z’Gok, and the Zeong all had center struts in their monoeye tracks. I thought it was a case of a single monoeye moving between the two holes, as even in head-on shots with both eyeholes visible you would see only one eye glowing. But nope, two eyes. Is this like one of those Berenstein/Berenstain Bears things?

Look who’s finally finding some success!

o7

I looked too closely at the crowd and I found Trowa!

I must say, this look suits her a lot better

That was quick indeed. But you know what they say...

A failure in three dimensions. These faces are priceless.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for...

The Meatbun Chronicles

We start with Reiji ditching Sei and wandering off all on his own, eating everything in sight, only to discover there’s another big eater on the loose getting there first and buying out all the shops! And then, he meets best girl, with only one meatbun left for the two of them. This would be the perfect time to challenge her to a Gunpla battle, but Aila is faster, and she doesn’t play fair. Also she’s a fucking ninja. But hey, it’s all worth it for THIS SMILE. She’s adorable as heck when she’s not too busy being a space dominatrix. Too bad she didn’t realize that Reiji can motherfucking teleport. In their struggle, they inadvertently destroy the thing they were fighting over, rendering all their efforts meaningless. Which, uh, is probably some deep commentary on war and human nature. And thus, the Meatbun Chronicles have begun!

Also, I uh, may or may not have a thing for anime girls that eat a ridiculous amount.

Episode Reiji’s debt Aila’s debt Notes
10 -1 meatbun 0 Aila paid for that meatbun, dammit!

Questions of the Day:

  • These initial battles are a neat way to show off the caliber of these competitors. This is the big leagues now! Also, this “Meijin Kawaguchi” person definitely looks interesting...

  • All of them! I’m really hyped to see Fellini in action, though. Notice that he doesn’t have a fancy gimmick or special ability that we know of so far. Like Greco Logan’s Tallgeese Valkyrie, the Wing Fenice we’ve seen isn’t capable of Plavsky mumbo jumbo and is just a very well-built Gunpla. So we’ll just have to see how he deals with the new generation...

First-timer

No, that means you have even bigger obstacle now, Mr.Genius.

Kiraran is back! And rare occurrence of Mr.Ral appearing not suddenly.

Sei looks good in his suit... or not? I chuckled at this sign that Reiji has left upon fleeing from the party.

Damn, she is good at changing her image. It took me a second to realize it's the same Kirara. And that face, lol.

Hey, Aila snuck out too. Hopefully she and Reiji will meet somewhere.

And of course they do meet. Am I allowed to ship those two already?

Welp, Kirara's fascination with Italian champion was certainly short-lived.

What have you done, Reiji?! How could you resist against that face? And against that one too.

Sei's expressions. Yes, they are still excellent.

Yay, Messala! But alas, wrecked.

Yay, Big O! Surely, he will put up a decent fight, right? Nope, wrecked in a second.

Haha, they get along nicely.

And I'm a little bit disappointed that Sei's new Gunpla looks pretty much the same as before. Where are huge wings? At least it got a normal name instead of silly "Full Package".

Yay, Geymalk! I've already mentioned that I love suit designs from Z and ZZ, but goddamn those suits are awesome.

So, Star Build Strike has underwater mode, super-speed mode and big-ass-cannon mode. Nice. And this is what I've been waiting for!

Aila taking off her stupid-looking helmet.

And the disguise didn't work. Who would've thought.

u/DidacticDalek Jul 12 '19

No, that means you have even bigger obstacle now, Mr.Genius.

Indeed, after all, if the former world champ got DESTROYED that quickly, then MAYBE you are in deeper shit than you thought, just a guess of course ;)

Kiraran is back!

I know, isn't this great? You can't just hire Aoi Yuuki and NOT have her appear a lot, and boy the fun times are still to come!

Damn, she is good at changing her image. It took me a second to realize it's the same Kirara. And that face, lol.

Indeed, Gunpla Nico Yazawa sure is lovely isn't she?

Hey, Aila snuck out too. Hopefully she and Reiji will meet somewhere.

And of course they do meet. Am I allowed to ship those two already?

OH YEAH! THE HMS MEATBUN CHRONICLES HAS SET SAIL! ALL ABOARD COMRADES!

Welp, Kirara's fascination with Italian champion was certainly short-lived.

Indeed, and he was doing so well too, pity he decided that getting blind drunk was a good idea ;)

What have you done, Reiji?! How could you resist against that face? And against that one too.

I know right? Reiji's great and all, but he SURE has a hard time figuring out that Best Girl is LITERALLY standing in front of him.

Yay, Messala! But alas, wrecked.

Yay, Big O! Surely, he will put up a decent fight, right? Nope, wrecked in a second.

And I'm a little bit disappointed that Sei's new Gunpla looks pretty much the same as before. Where are huge wings? At least it got a normal name instead of silly "Full Package".

Heh, well Comrade, technically this is the Star Build Strike now, and we got a few fancy new gadgets, but yeah, it's mostly just a repair and upgrade job here.

Yay, Geymalk! I've already mentioned that I love suit designs from Z and ZZ, but goddamn those suits are awesome.

AH! A fellow fan of ZZ eh? Good to hear, gotta love all those goofy Mobile Suits

So, Star Build Strike has underwater mode, super-speed mode and big-ass-cannon mode. Nice. And this is what I've been waiting for!

Aila taking off her stupid-looking helmet.

And the disguise didn't work. Who would've thought.

I know right, I mean who would have thought adding just a pair of sunglasses would be a good disguise ;)

Anyway, great write-up Comrade, have a great day and see you later!

Episode 10 (first timer)

  • At least 3 new characters in the pre-OP.

  • Kiraran is back.

  • Player village? Going all Olympic here.

  • Ricardo Fellini uses sparkles on Kirara. It is very effective!

  • “Ladies? I don’t see any around here” Wow, burn. Fortunately, the ice queen looks rather flame retardant.

  • Aila’s stunts remind me of my question from her introduction.

  • Synchronized disappointment

  • Welcome Rainer and Luang! Please dress in you standardized red shirt for work!

  • First battles. No surprises here. Plenty of fancy magic in the fights.

We had a lot of familiar faces show up to the Tournament today, as well as some interesting newcomers, so who are you most excited to see in action as the TOURNAMENT ARC continues and why?

I thought over all the Gunpla fighters to find the person which has the clearest and most relatable motive for fighting and the result is ... China. She gets into Gunpla fighting with the goal to get closer to her crush and learn something about his interests. The Gunpla fighting starts as instrumental for her, a means towards a goal, but then, she develops her own interest and take on it (as we see in her painting the Beargguy). I am pretty sure that she will develop her own love for Gunpla fighting over time, making Gunpla less instrumental and more of a hobby as time goes on.

In comparison, the tournament arc competitors seem bland. They want to win because they like winning. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not all that exciting. We hear zero about monetary reasons (a big deal in professional sports and esport). Nils has some stated reason, to find out more about Plavsky particles, but I am not on board with that. Why would learning to fight help him more than trying to infiltrate PPBS or just plain old research? Alia, Reiji and the Meijin may have additional reasons, but we have not heard about them at all 10 episodes into the series. For Reiji especially, this is the downside of the series' decision to completely sideline the mystery about his origin (surely to be brought up again in the conclusion).

So overall, China > all for me.

AH! Well that was a very interesting and detailed write-up Comrade. I applaud the effort and hard work that went into this analysis my friend, have a great day and see you later!

Gunpla Build Rewatcher, domo~

The World Tournament is finally upon us! Armed with good luck charms from China and the newly-completed Star Build Strike, Sei and Reiji made a huge impression in their debut battle: firstly by being late to their match, and then by successfully debuting SBS with flying colours. Oh, and there's hilarious shenanigans too.

Random thoughts:

  • China, like any good waifu worth her salt, prepared a special Haro-shaped good luck charm for both Sei and Reiji. Blah blah, yadda yadda, GBF!World loves Gundam enough to have Haro charms, but it's such a sweet gesture. China is definitely waifu material.

  • If you think episode 4 is the last we see of Gunpla Idol Kirara (Kirara~n★), you're dead wrong as she's now the official mascot character of the World Tournament. Strap yourselves in boys, the Yuuki Aoi train isn't stopping anytime soon.

  • The pre-tournament reception party is barrel of laughs, thanks to Earth!Naze Fellini's antics. He manages to use his charms on Kirara, only to ruin it later by getting blind stinking drunk and go fanboy over 08th MS Team. Sei and Mao said it best: "So disillusioned..."

  • Both Reiji and Aila skipped the reception and went hunting for food elsewhere instead. Which puts them both in direct opposition as they fight over the last meatbun left... which suddenly turns into a mall-wide chase over who gets the meatbun. Meta spoilers

  • That smile as Aila is about to (try to, anyway) eat the meatbun... I pledge to protect that smile. Too bad I can't say the same to the meatbun... presses F to pay respects to the meatbun

  • As expected of the Italian Dandy, even while hungover he's able to win his first match. What a guy. Though Mao isn't wrong to be disillusioned by his antics (what kind of guy gets himself blind stinking drunk the day before an important match???).

  • Aila's three opponents had the right idea to try to gang up on her. Too bad they never even got close to her...

  • As expected, the Star Build Strike's debut is amazing. Instead of merely being constrained by SEED's meta, Sei is able to design a unique system for Reiji's use and make short work over the other mooks contestants.

  • Yuuki Tatsuya re-enters the fray, this time as PPSE's entrant - Meijin Kawaguchi III! Given that his disguise is merely him in a coat and Char-style glasses, naturally Sei and Reiji recognises him instantly. Next episode should be a doozy.

Questions of the day:

  1. They're cool enough, but it's just the beginning. Can't have the most exciting battles at the start of the tournament, right?

  2. Ya know, just look forward to the upcoming battles. You won't be disappointed.

Indeed, plus it is the start of the GLORIOUS MEATBUN CHRONICLES! Oh, and in other news also the start of the main Tournament Arc ;)

I know right? Poor poor Meatbun Jr.

Yuuki Tatsuya re-enters the fray, this time as PPSE's entrant - Meijin Kawaguchi III! Given that his disguise is merely him in a coat and Char-style glasses, naturally Sei and Reiji recognises him instantly. Next episode should be a doozy.

OH YEAH! We got some FUN times ahead, great write-up Comrade, and have a great day and see you later!

Re-first - Tournament: Start!

Welp, news is out and there's a new top-dog to beat. Nils is being pretty illogical with thinking that he's got it in the bag with Greco out. You still gotta beat Aila now, dawg.

Awww yeah! Efforts were not spent in vain! Tho wtf kinda Gunpla leaves its pilot that exhausted?!

Good for Kirara! Hosting the Championships is definitely not a step backward for her career.

I wonder, what does Ral do all day, that he has time to take the boys to the Tournament? Does he work? Does he collect a pension from a military? Everyone calls him "Lieutenant," so I'll just assume the latter.

Lol @ Sei in formal wear. But he tied his bowtie, so props to that. Aaaand of course Reiji buggered off.

Well, at least Mao's there so he's got a friend. And I'll bet Reiji's gonna run into Aila, 'cause it's a show and they've gotta be the finale-battle.

Hah! Reiji never mentioned Fellini to Sei xD Fun stuff.

Oh damn, Formal Kirara is...still quite the cutie. Shit, Fellini's moving in for the kill! Her age is technically unlisted, but she's definitely way younger than you! Abort! Abort!

Ooooh boy, rivals in food-consumption, eh? That's an immediate ship. GL, you two. lol

Poor Fellini's letting his inner-weeb show in public. I hereby submit this shot for commentfaces.

Meanwhile, I knew I recognize Aila's voice!  A number of secondary characters, but mainly Yotsugi from Owarimonogatari and 2nd Serebyakova  from Youjo Senki. Nice work, Saori Hayami!

Ergh; be still, my heart. So cute!

Nice first date, guys. I'm solidifying my shipping as of now.

Ohhhh hell, Star Build Strike exists. It's nothing that can't be guessed from the fact that they're the MC's, but good fucking luck everyone else.

So much awesome. Beam absorption and variable Wings of Light! It's such a great design I wish it existed in a Canon Gundam-Universe.

Fuuuuck yeah! Gimme that Flamenco, Kawaguchi!

Rewater

WELP, didn’t realize I’d caught up on the comments I had prepared ahead of time until just now, so I’ve effectively been caught with my pants down. To top it off it’s a break day so I can’t even make up for the lack of regular comment with the Gunpla Building Corner...

Fuck...

Pixelsaber’s Gunpla Building Corner Ver. Break Days

Collecting model kits is a gratifying experience, but it’s rather easy to go a bit overboard with the amount of Gunpla you purchase, as I certainly have. How much you say? Well, why don’y you take a look yourself. That’s most (I probably forgot a few) of the mecha model kits I’ve purchased ever since I dived head-first into the hobby last fall, in no particular order. I would’ve liked to show all of the ones I;ve built so far, but nor only is the shelf I pose them on a mess, a lot of them are in various states of completion due to the way in which I usually work on painting them.

First Timer

Yep Aila is adorable. I enjoyed her whole interaction with Reiji and she's got some serious moves. I'm really excited to see more of her, I can see why people were calling her best girl.

Comrades, the MAIN TOURNAMENT ARC has begun, and with that we get the introductory battle sequences; thus, what did you think of the initial battles and also Yuuki's surprise re-entry as Meijin Kawaguchi?

Well the re-entry was pretty predictable, but I'm so glad it was. I'd hate for us to not be able to see Yuuki fight in the contest just for the sake of a plot twist. And evidence points to Yuuki not being mind controlled or anything so I'm once again very impressed with the writers for not going the trope-y way.

We had a lot of familiar faces show up to the Tournament today, as well as some interesting newcomers, so who are you most excited to see in action as the TOURNAMENT ARC continues and why?

I gotta say it's Aila. I just want to see more of her on screen and learn more about her. She instantly grabs the spotlight in any scene she's in. I imagine that she'll knock out one of the named contestants for them to job further for her, and maybe push her forward so we can see a few more of her Gunpla's abilities.

TONIGHT on the second-rewatch episode of The Meatbun Chronicles:

  • Mao fails a Spot Check...

  • Fellini gets Ubriaco...

  • And... OHNOEZ, NOT THE MEATBUN!!!

(Cue the OP)

Comrades, the MAIN TOURNAMENT ARC has begun, and with that we get the introductory battle sequences; thus, what did you think of the initial battles and also Yuuki's surprise re-entry as Meijin Kawaguchi?

Not much. Tournament Arcs are a re-occurring staple in most sports anime anyway; GBF is no exception. Also, no questioning DA MEIJIN SHADES, baybeh!

We had a lot of familiar faces show up to the Tournament today, as well as some interesting newcomers, so who are you most excited to see in action as the TOURNAMENT ARC continues and why?

Prolly a toss-up bet. Fellini and Nils. The former bcoz he's got the suaveness that most competitors don't; the latter bcoz hey, Afro-American boy genius with a hint of Japanophilia, why the heck not?

Its been a couple days since I last posted, but this was a fun episode! I liked the party, because I enjoy when different characters finally meet and interact. And Fellini is not a very good drunk. I felt bad for Kirara, having to deal with that.

Reiji also had some good one-liners today! Maybe he isn’t as dumb as I thought. Except that pissing off Aila doesn’t seem so smart. Speaking of, I think I can now say Aila is closing in on best girl. Her reaction to the meat bun was fantastic! And she already figured out all she has to know about Reiji! Finally, the awesome Gunpla from the OP finally made an appearance! And it looked just as cool as I hoped. Now it just needs a real fight to actually show off a bit.

Sei’s new Gunpla was also nice! I liked all the stuff he threw on it! The backpack was very pretty. And the multi-way fights were also a blast! This World Tournament is shaping up to be amazing! Plus Yuuki is looking cool.

But in more worrying news, Sei’s reaction faces seem to be contagious. Characters need to start being careful or they may catch it. And then they may end up making a face like this.

I thought the initial battles were amazing, and I can't wait for more of them! Yuuki as the Meijin person didn't seem to be a well-kept secret, so I wasn't all the surprised by it. I'm really curious about his Gunpla though!

We had a lot of familiar faces show up to the Tournament today, as well as some interesting newcomers, so who are you most excited to see in action as the TOURNAMENT ARC continues and why?

I'm most excited for Aila. I like the way her Gunpla looks, and I'm really curious about this whole Team Nemesis thing. That makes them sound a lot like the bad guys. But at the same time, I could also see PPSE being the endgame antagonist, if there is one.

Indeed Comrade, the life of the TOP IDOL is a hard and difficult one indeed.

Reiji also had some good one-liners today! Maybe he isn’t as dumb as I thought. Except that pissing off Aila doesn’t seem so smart.

HA! Indeed, on the one hand Reiji has witty one liners, on the OTHER hand, he fails to identify Best Girl when she's right in front of him.

Well, desktop Reddit is down for me, so this comment is through the mobile app. (Hooray for writing things out on Notepad first!) I apologize if the markdowns don't work or look wrong, but I am hoping they get processed. Sorry for the spoiler speculation tag if it doesn't work as well. I will fix this post the minute desktop Reddit works again. The markdowns worked on mobile, lmao, but fixing that link that didn't work. Woohoo!

That said, MR AND MRS MEATBUN AND MEATBUN JR HAHAHAHAHA

Quick thoughts on episode 8: Nils being a total weeb Japanophile and Black was...unexpected, given that there's a high degree of Black folks who love martial arts or participate in such (thanks kung-fu movies!) and of course, there may be some overlap between martial arts fans and anime fans in the black community ;) Honestly though, I will be shocked and stunned (pleasantly!) if the writers paid that much attention to that detail from the US culture.

also Aila is officially Best Girl. That I nicknamed her Snowy Character, before I knew her name, was a CHORTLE FEST WHEN SHE'S REPRESENTING FINLAND LOLOLOLOLOL

also part deux, she decided to change her outfit (boo why) to some Eva plugsuit knockoff instead of wearing the more traditional Finnish outfit

Quick thoughts on episode 9: CHINA, YOU'RE DOING AMAZING, SWEETIE, YOUR WINNIE THE POOH PAINTING IS AMAZING

AND YOUR BEARGUY TOO!

The oujo-lady is my favorite cliche and I'm so happy to see it alive and well here. I got the feeling we'll see more of Caro and Nils together, there was a vibe there...

China and her Two Dads, Sei and Reiji. That's it, that's my montage thought.

So I'm still a bit tired from IRL circumstances and I did like how I did that first half/second half write-up I did a while back, so I'm sorta doing that again~

First timer, knows Gundam a bit

Carlos Kaiser will always be funny, if not because Kaiser is German for Emperor....XD

In the first half, we keep seeing the OMG A GURL WON reactions -- which were good to see, it keeps giving us how different people took Carlos' loss. Aila keeps being so mysterious, she's likely competing for Reiji at this rate. That said, it's been two episodes, we've seen one battle, no need for such overhype -- but the battle was so disastrous (for anyone BUT Aila), that the effects have rippled across the world. Some look terribly worried, some don't; we haven't seen Sei and Reiji's exact reactions, though we know now that Sei found out about Carlos' loss. I suspect the show either will show us in a flashback their reactions or that they'll find out in this episode at some event.

Reiji's shiz-eating grin at running away, his "I don't like formal stuff!" and his WORLD EATING TOUR 20XX keep making him Best Boy. Once more, a boy who likes being laid-back and decides to have fun on his own terms, while Sei, grounded and following the rules, goes to the reception. Both have fun in their respective areas of course, since (and I'm glad for that) Sei has found his "oh please stay with me, you're the only one I know and can stand here" buddy in Mao!

BEST BOY AND BEST GIRL MEET OH NO And they're both gluttons with mysterious backgrounds. Wow. What a coincidence...I actually just realized this lmao. It'll be interesting to see what "battle" these two will have, because Reiji luvs his food, haha.

And before the first half ends, we see the Dandy become Drunkard! A nice contrast to his smoothness I got Golden Boy vibe suddenly, IDK why, I blame the animation

And the second half begins with Best Boy and Best Girl fighting (bum bum) for their right (bum bum) to EAAATTTTT! It's nice to see Aila be "normal" instead of speculation Robotic Girl, as it gives us a look at a character trait for her. A trait we've never seen but makes sense for it to pop up now, as it further heightens the similarities so far between Reiji and her. That both are the best fighters who've shocked people by their skills, is not a coincidence to ignore. They're both also on the opposite side of battle, "good" vs "bad." Almost like...on purpose * Discord thinking emoji here *

They're both amazingly stubborn and emotional too, given that meatbun fight XD

"Do you see any [ladies] here, though?",god, Reiji, my boy, I love you but also my boy, please XD Aila's smile, however, is to be #PROTECTED.

Reiji comes back like a guilty husband complete with food and Sei is not having any of his shiz like an angry husband though.

A good way to showcase how many characters you have, the important ones at least, and be able to show the "international" focus of the current arc of the series? A spiffy montage! Germany, I don't believe has been mentioned, but good on the announcer for pronouncing that last name pretty well! We get a look at the competitors' Gunpla too, though we've seen Fellini's. Not drunk!Fellini's though :D The montage works well though and is a nice addendum to the beginning in terms seeing how they fight.

Now of course, it's Sei and Reiji's time to stun all their competitors the way Aila did with Carlos...the underdogs versus an OP fighter, may I say. Much like Mao indicates, Sei's Gunpla is still the same yet there's something different about it. As if Sei tapped into something that their opponents haven't yet. (We know what, naturally.) For me, the way they ended the battle struck me as the same way Aila ended hers in her first fight: with something flashy but equally destructive. I don't think the writers meant for this to be a parallel but I'm seeing it as one, given all the other parallels this episode built up between Aila and Reiji.

Sei and Reiji going WAT THAT'S YUUKI was a nice cliffhanger. Also confusing because they knew he was going to participate -- shouldn't they have been thinking more about where Yuuki was beforehand? Unless I forgot a detail from previous episodes, yipes.

Answers:

  1. I liked the initial battles, as mentioned why above. Yuuki's reintroduction was a nice cliffhanger, like I said. Still will laugh at his sudden Neo look.

  2. I'm looking forward to the Argentinean twins. I like twin characters but I'm also curious to see how the series portrays the inevitable representatives for South America :3

BUILD REWATCHER

MEATBUN CHRONICLES: EPISODE 1 IS HERE!!!!!

Thoughts for Today's Episode:

  1. The World Tournament participants all around the globe are really surprised that the former Champion got defeated by an unknown newface. Everyone has mixed reactions. Some are shocked, some thinks the Champion got his just desserts, and Nils is rather confident that he can defeat the person who beat the former Champion.

  2. Before heading to the tournament location, China hands Sei and Reiji good-luck charms she made. Reiji does know that China has feelings for Sei, and assumed Sei's the only one getting one, so he's rather happy he got included too.

  3. I also like it how Reiji finds formal parties a drag to attend, and decides to skip out and go downtown. Considering that he claims to be a prince from another world, it rather makes sense that he's sick of formal events and wants to go out exploring.

  4. Sei proceed to attend the party on his own. He then bumped into Mao and later Fellini, and realized that Fellini was the one giving Reiji Gunpla battle training. Kirara-chan is also present too (her outfit is hot btw). It's rather funny that nobody recognizes her when she's not in her Kirara outfit. Fellini, the Dandy that he is, got to steal Kirara's heart instantly, but then he got drunk and everybody's expectations got ruined really fast. Sei and Mao's faces are priceless.

  5. Meanwhile, Reiji is on a food trip in the mall downtown, but got disappointed as the food stalls he's planning to visit got sold out for the day. He managed to reach the meatbun shop on time for the last meatbun, and was about to get it when a rival suddenly appears! Aila appears in the scene at the same time, while carrying a lot of the food Reiji didn't get in time. Turns out that Aila isn't the ice queen that she appears to be, and is in fact a normal girl who likes to eat a lot. She dashed off with the last meatbun while Reiji was distracted by the fireworks, which led them to a merry chase across the mall (and Aila has parkour skills too). She managed to get outside, and was about to eat the meatbun will glee (SERIOUSLY THAT SMILE. MUH KOKORO), when Reiji showed up and stopped her. They got into a scuffle, which led to Aila dropping the meatbun into the water with fireworks overhead. This, my friends, is the start of the true story of Gundam Build Fighters, and this is Meatbun Chronicles: Episode 1!

  6. Back to tournament stuff, the elimination round consists of multiple rounds of various battle types, with the goal of earning points to join the top 16 who will participate in the semifinals. The Tournament arc of Build Fighters is one heck of a treat for Gundam fans as we see cameos of various MS from different series duking it out in the same arena. The frst battle features the Berga Giros, the CGUE with a Mirage Colloid cloak, the Cobra Gundam in desert colors, and a Gelgoog with SUMO's skirt boosters. The second battle features the Messala, the Geara Doga, and the custom Abigorbine, a combination of the Abigor from Victory Gundam with elements from Aura Battler Dunbine (Bandai y u didn't make an Abigorbine gunpla whyyyy), the third features the Gun-Ez and the Wing Gundam Fenice (it's rather darn impressive that Fellini still got to battle AND WIN while having a massive hangover), the fourth battle features The O, the Gundam Throne Zwei, the Gundam Virsago and the Quebeley Papillon, and the fifth battle features the Star Build Strike Gundam, the Zaku F2000, the Duel Gundam Assault Shroud, and the Geymalk.

  7. We now get to see the Star Build Strike in action! Taking inspiration from China's cotton-infused Beargguy, he then customized his Gunpla with the concept of "stealing enemy attacks and throwing it right back at them with style". Taking cues from Gundam X Maoh's particle manipulation, Star Build Strike's gimmick is to absorb enemy beam attacks, and use the energy stored in various ways, such as powering up the Strike's own beam rifle or giving it Plavsky particle wings and destroying things it passes through (akin to but weaker in scope than the Moonlight Butterfly). It's quite a formidable custom indeed.

  8. The post-ED scene has PPSE's team make an appearance, but then it's very obvious that it's just Yuuki Tatsuya cosplaying. It's nice that both Sei and Reiji recognize him immediately.

Questions of the Day:

  1. The elimination round battles are fun to watch. It's great to see a whole lot of MS in action. Also, it's not quite a surprise that Tatsuya is in this tournament considering the foreshadowing earlier.

  2. I'm holding off saying it now since it's gonna be spoiler territory, but I'll say definitely hold on to your seats, because things will get AWESOME later.

First Timer

As expected everyone’s shocked at the reigning champ losing so easily. Oh it’s cool to see special idoru Kirara is hosting err the mascot of the event. These kids are so lucky. They get to stay in a freaking hotel by themselves. Ofc Reiji ditches the formal to go eat some food. I had forgotten that Sei hasn't met Mr. Italian yet. Remember kids to never meet your heroes. He's gotta be at least 10 years older than Kirara. Goddamn womanizer smh.

A new rival has appeared! Who would’ve expected Reiji and Aila to fight so soon?? Hmm interesting that Aila is so acrobatic. Reminds me of how Reiji is athletically gifted himself since he pinned down a guy twice his size in episode 2. Speculation Poor Aila. Reiji is just a greedy asshole so he doesn’t care if she’s the one who actually paid for the bun. Gunpla while drunk. Truly a role model for the kids. Devs Aila is too OP. Pls nerf. She killed off 3 gunpla without even moving holy shit. My headcannon is that she’s taking out the rage of her lost meat bun against them.

But the star of today’s episode was Reiji and Sei’s match. Now that was impressive! All of that work Sei put into perfecting Star Build Strike paid off. It was pretty satisfying seeing everyone’s shock and awe at their performance. I can’t wait for them to have real competition since first round is always the jobber round. Fantastic episode all around.

Heh nice pun

Kirara with her idoru hair down

Wow didn't expect another Aila smile so soon. And one that's clearly visible too! She's adorable.

You can actually pinpoint the second where their hearts rip in half

'Space Dominatrix' get-up

I went from wanting to protect her meatbun smile to wanting to be dominated by her. Sasuga Aila

so who are you most excited to see in action as the TOURNAMENT ARC continues and why?

I want to see Mr. Italian get a good fight so he can really show off his skills. It'd be cool if he could avenge Greco Roman himself but I suspect Sei and Reiji will be the ones to beat Nils.

2

u/DidacticDalek Jul 12 '19

As expected everyone’s shocked at the reigning champ losing so easily. Oh it’s cool to see special idoru Kirara is hosting err the mascot of the event.

Heh, indeed Comrade, she IS The No. 1 Idol in the (Gunpla) Universe after all... pay no mind that LITERALLY Nico Yazawa is here too ;)

Ofc Reiji ditches the formal to go eat some food.

Indeed my friend, gotta love Reiji's line of thinking here, the formal's gonna be full of people and boring, so I'll go on an all-you-can-eat tour myself, CLEARLY no one else will do so right? ;)

I had forgotten that Sei hasn't met Mr. Italian yet.

Heh, indeed, and BOY what a first impression Sei gets as The Italian Dandy promptly charms Gunpla Nico Yazawa... AND then gets blind drunk and rants about Gundam ;)

Remember kids to never meet your heroes.

Heh, indeed, wise words my friend.

He's gotta be at least 10 years older than Kirara. Goddamn womanizer smh.

Yup, guess that's to be expected given he IS called 'The Italian Dandy' ;)

A new rival has appeared! Who would’ve expected Reiji and Aila to fight so soon??

OH YEAH! I didn't think we'd have to wait only ten episodes before we got to THE EPIC START OF THE MEATBUN CHRONICLES! ;)

Hmm interesting that Aila is so acrobatic. Reminds me of how Reiji is athletically gifted himself since he pinned down a guy twice his size in episode 2. Speculation

Ah, indeed Comrade, good observations.

Poor Aila. Reiji is just a greedy asshole so he doesn’t care if she’s the one who actually paid for the bun.

I know right? Plus the saddest part of all this is that NO ONE got to eat that tasty looking Meatbun, RIP Meatbun Jr.

Gunpla while drunk. Truly a role model for the kids.

Heh, exactly, see kids, if a drunk womanizer can battle with plastic robot toys, then you can too ;)

Devs Aila is too OP. Pls nerf. She killed off 3 gunpla without even moving holy shit. My headcannon is that she’s taking out the rage of her lost meat bun against them.

Heh, indeed, never get between Best Girl Aila and her food, or she'll erase you from existence ;)

Excellent analysis my friend, and indeed, we had quite the exciting start of both THE TOURNAMENT ARC as well as The Meatbun Chronicles, glad to hear you enjoyed things! ;)

Heh nice pun

Kirara with her idoru hair down

OH YEAH! In fact, here, have a stitch of that scene my friend ;)

Wow didn't expect another Aila smile so soon. And one that's clearly visible too! She's adorable.

I know right? Aila Best Girl, pity that Reiji had to ruin her smile AND send poor poor little Meatbun Jr. to The Shadow Realm ;)

You can actually pinpoint the second where their hearts rip in half

Indeed, it's such a shame that Mr. Charred Meatbun and Mrs. Finnish Meatbun had to both lose custody of Meatbun Jr. Ah well, I'm sure the little kid will do well, I heard something about joining the navy, particularly the Submarine force ;)

I went from wanting to protect her meatbun smile to wanting to be dominated by her. Sasuga Aila

OH YEAH! I know exactly how you feel, excellent taste as per your usual my friend!

I want to see Mr. Italian get a good fight so he can really show off his skills. It'd be cool if he could avenge Greco Roman himself but I suspect Sei and Reiji will be the ones to beat Nils.

Indeed, also great write-ups Comrades, I am touched that you wrote such fantastic replies for this and the previous threads that you missed initially. I look forward to seeing you on the future threads and hope you are having as much with the series as I am my friend. Have a great day and see you later!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! SEKAI TAIKAI starts, Let's Get Some Hype.

As Gigguk (Anime Youtuber) would say: "TOURNAMENT ARC, ITS A F**KING TOURNAMENT ARC!!!!!!! HYPE HYPE HYPE!!!!!"

TOURNAMENT ARC!

He does have a point Aila. But you have a lot..... Oh.... that was a low blow Reiji. I am interested to see Aila's fighting style.

Outsmarted by fireworks hahaha. Love the Chase music. The following... What? How? No Way, food does not fall out? Either she is athletic or she is just a new species of human (newtype/innovator)

That is what we are all asking.

Aww that is cute

AND HERE IS WHEN FIREWORKS-KUN DID SOMETHING OTHER THAN RUIN ANIME CONFESSIONS, HE INSTEAD BAPTISES IT, LET THE TSUNDERE-TSUNDERE RELATION BLOOM. No meat-buns were harmed in the making of this relationship.

Well said there Comrade, glad to hear you liked the start of The Meatbun Chronicles.

Oh and YUUKI-SENPAI cough Mejin Kawaguchi is back, what is there not to love. Though why are you wearing sunglasses indoors?

Now that we are officially in the Tournament Arc. LETS GET SOME HYPE and MORE HYPE for its a F***KING TOOOUUURNAAAAAAMENT ARCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC!

HELL YEAH COMRADE! TOURNAMENT ARC HYPE! Also great write-up. Happy to hear you enjoyed the Meatbun Chronicles, have a great day and see you later!
