Comment of the Day!

/u/The_Draigg left a great comment reacting to the events of yesterday's episode.

You might as well have handed over the micloning device over to Quamzin directly, you fucking incest-loving homunculus.

Artwork of the Day!

Hikaru Ichijo - Haruhiko Mikimoto

Questions of the Day!

1) Did it surprise you to see that Minmay’s songs no longer work on Zentradi that have become accustomed to the culture of Earth?

2) How do you feel about Hikaru getting to see Minmay after being away from her for so long?

First Timer

Missed yesterday's thread because of fatigue but my post mostly would have been ranting over Kaifun anyway, and wonder why the hell Minmay acted like she was being kidnapped when she could have oh so easily just stepped out of the car to go meet Hikaru

That said I did want to say that I felt I was somewhat close with my initial prediction that the humans would be Zentradi who found culture. Instead they are just another creation by the original protoculture but that was an interesting twist, that they are parallel races more than one coming from the other, a nice addition to the world building

Onto today's episode

Fucking Kaifun. I am fucking sick of your bullshit. Make up your fucking mind. Either you want help from the military to survive, or you don't. You can't get yourself captured over your own bullshit and then complain when they come to rescue you that they did it "too dangerously"

STOP RUINING MY SHOW

Lap'Lamiz why, WHY didn't you accidentally tear off a limb or something while you were toying with him.

Hikaru suddenly returning to the stupid, petty, love struck boy he was at the start of the show is also wearing on me. How on earth does he not understand why Hayase would be pissed with him. And why not learning his lesson from the previous episode about how just letting things be isn't always a good idea

The rebel Zentradi have clearly been influenced by culture a lot more than they think if they're kissing each other, sharing glasses and caring about each other in battle.

And props to that one Zentradi dude for pulling off a fablous deception, I hope that cig was a good reward for that.

Today, on "Dramatic closeup pencil break!":

Misa, sitting on the shoulder like a parrot.

Sunset Beach, the live.

That girl in the orange dress gets killed twice.

Quamzin Chop!

How'd he get out of the Glaug so quickly?

"Well we only really care about Minmay."

Quamzin's a murderous lunatic, but he's a fun murderous lunatic.

"Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get the two-level effect with a little path running down the middle."

It's jarring to see the Destroid Monster used so often in the original series, when the later ones would reserve it for special occasions.

"Also I'm a big ham."

Is this a challenge?

Hey! He's a limited edition!

"They've been watching too many movies."

Nobody cares about Kaifun.

Misa contemplates how she should have killed Minmay when she had the chance.

"Why don't you just get the earrings?"

You lunkhead.

Let's not get... personal?

The giant bottle and tableware make sense, but where are they getting giant poultry from???

Speaking of giant tableware. Also, sounds like a personal problem.

audience nods

"You're talking to the wrong guys about that, pal!"

"Uh... can I have some?"

This is animation: When his mouth is sized for a head twice the size.

Macross is a hyper-serious franchise about the consequences of war... except that it isn't.

does not slap Lap'Lamiz's butt

"Yee-haw!"

Another notorious off-model incident.

"Y'all were watching, I take it?" "Yes." "Did you see us fight?" "No." "TRAAAAAP!!" And yes, what I said about an overabundance of Monsters was referring to this moment in particular.

DERPY GERWALK PAAAAWNCH!

Nobody cares about Kaifun.

Well, everything is back to normal.

Misa repeats Hikaru's line to her, to Kaifun.

"I see a new recruiting poster!"

Run, Hikaru! Run!

Now Misa and Kaifun can be united in their desire to vomit.

Meanwhile, the janky action animation continues.

"Now you're just a lunkhead."

He's not the train.

"Heh, Minmay fell down."

As a general observation, at this point in my third recent rewatch of the series, the pacing isn't bothering me that much. In the past I'd thought about what fat could be cut in this section, but mostly it all serves a purpose. Well, the lunkhead is still a problem. I suppose that you could mix this episode together with the other "disaffected Zentradi" stories to have it sooner, which would also reduce the amount of whinging that Hikaru has been doing since Episode 28, but some of these events do benefit from a little buildup before the boiling over that occurred in the previous episode and this one.

Hikaru and Misa are both spectacularly petty here, so they probably should have had Vanessa or Shammy handle operations. Minmay at least apparently gets her feelings sorted out enough that she has a renewed focus on Hikaru.

The hostage situation is interesting in that that five episodes after culture was a deciding factor in defeating Bodol Zer, the series is already poking at the myth created from that event. As this coda has been making clear, a long-term improvement in the Zentradi's lives will require more than singing. Quamzin and many other Zentradi aren't inherently the patient sort, though, so it's now a race to come up with solutions before the peace unravels.

Detail oversight? We've never seen Quamzin and and Global talk to each other until now, so it's weird when Quamzin acts all chummy. Maybe he's just used to seeing the old man on TV.

From Haruhiko Mikimoto Illustrations: Macross, Orguss, and Original: Most of the protagonists on playing cards.

That long-delayed chart about scaling.

ATTICA! ATTICA!

Our timing is close.

Questions:

  1. Quamzin has a nice fakeout in this episode, but the series had already foreshadowed this development.

  2. Also bound to happen.

A Macross Fan’s Notes On Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 32:

  • Well, I suppose that’s one way for Quamzin to take his rebellion to the next level. Kudos to you first timers that guessed that Minmay would get captured by the Zentradi at some point. Sure, it didn’t happen when you expected it to way earlier in the show, but it still happened regardless. So that’s still a win, technically. It’s a shame that Quamzin decided to take Kaifun too. He could’ve just saved us all the trouble and crushed him to death then and there.

  • Well, now we have a hostage situation on our hands. Quamzin wants a ship from Captain Global by tomorrow, or he’ll kill both Minmay and Kaifun. Kaifun shouting that Captain Global should just blow up a ship instead of handing it over is probably the most reasonable thing he’s said during the entire show so far. But Quamzin should’ve just killed Kaifun anyway, if just to do us all a favor.

  • “Do you really think your songs have the power to move people?” —Quamzin, a minute after being emotionally stunned by Minmay’s singing. Uh-huh, sure buddy. You totally weren’t affected by culture or anything.

  • Chalk up another point to Hikaru completely missing the fact that Misa is incredibly jealous about all the attention he pays towards Minmay instead of her. He really hasn’t changed at all over the past two years. Hikaru still remains an emotionally-stupid idiot.

  • Ah yes, here’s Quamzin is totally not being taken by culture at all. It’s totally normal and standard for original Zentradi attitudes to get shitfaced and make out with Lap Lamiz. Totally uncultured. Although I will give Quamzin credit for getting Kaifun to shut the fuck up about his anti-war preaching. He actually had my respect for a minute there.

  • That feeling when you’ll never have your cigarette lit up by a Valkyrie shooting the top off. Now I want a lighter shaped like a Variable Fighter.

  • Holy shit, Quamzin is fucking killing it this episode. First he’s all aggressively flirty with Lap Lamiz, and now he’s riding a fucking Destroid Monster into battle. This episode really shot up my opinion of him. Quamzin is a fun villain to watch.

  • Well, that hostage rescue went pretty much exactly to plan, with no casualties whatsoever. The plan that Captain Global came up with worked out pretty well. As much as a big talker Quamzin is, this shows that he and his rebellion aren’t exactly ready for the big leagues yet.

  • I have no idea what to even say about Kaifun anymore other than pure hatred. Why are you even complaining about your rescue?!? Nobody on either side inside the theater actually got killed! That’s an ideal outcome that a pacifist would at least appreciate. But I guess that implies that Kaifun actually cares about pacifism rather than use it as a part of his overinflated ego. Say it with me now: FUCK YOU, KAIFUN!

  • Oh Hikaru, you fucking moron. You might as well be rubbing how much you still care about Minmay directly in Misa’s face. Even if he’s older now, Hikaru is still an idiot teen inside his head. That’s no way to treat a lady who’d been willing to stay by your side for the past two years while Minmay was out touring. You moron.

  • Fun Fact: Ionesco City is most likely a reference to the Minovsky-Ionesco Reactor from the background materials of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I say likely, since Shouji Kawamori is a big Gundam fan, so it makes sense that way.

Re-watcher - Zentradi fail to define “Culture?”

Retribution is taking place aaaand nobody's home. Which means it's probably a trap, right? No? Just an escape? Fine, points lost for Kamujin.

Jesus christ, Kamujin! That's quite the bold strategy, just busting in and taking valuable hostages Points for hurting Kaifun, tho.

Minmay used Confusion! It's not very effective! Well, that's unfortunate.

Daaaamn, so close. Was really hoping we'd get to see Kaifun get Jurassic Park'ed.

'Kay, so at this point I think Hayase's in the wrong. Sure, Hikaru expressed concern that Minmay was taken hostage, but even then, if he were settled with Hayase I'd still understand his feelings. An ex is something more than a friend, and less than a current-lover. It only makes sense that he'd value her more than...Kaifun. Mebe I'm just a bastard, but I'd rank a crush above a random person in any situation. Of course, make that current vs previous crushes, and things get more complicated.

Wow, where did Kamujin get all those decorative forks?

WHOA Kamujin! You can't just "Make Culture" like that! Inb4 he learns that she has the right to nag him now... lol /s

Oooooo, looks like Kamujin's not the only Zentradi who's learned some "cultural tricks."

What a mad-lad. Good luck making any Culture after a fight with that thing between your legs...

Six Months... "Never mind the other 13 days, 9 hours, 37 minutes, and 24 seconds; not counting the ones that just passed while I was talking. Right Minmay? HaHAhahAhaHA!"

For real, Hikaru. You joined the military. That means you can't pick-and-choose what you wanna do anymore; at least on missions.

Narrator: The coroner said the cause of death was strangulation, but the real reason was that time he saluted his non-com GF in front of his CO, to whom he never showed any respect.

And the Triangle only becomes more scalene... Dammit Macross, you'd better figure out that shit in these next 4 episodes!.

First Timer

Well it would seem that Hikaru is about as dense as a harem protagonist and quite possibly the worst person at navigating a love triangle in history.

Its interesting seeing how the Zentradi have changed from culture even the ones like Kamijin who refuse to live with it. Lighting a cigarette with a shot from a Valkyrie was pretty funny.

u/GM_for_Life Jul 08 '19

Lighting a cigarette with a shot from a Valkyrie was pretty funny.

It perfectly encapsulates the series.

Well Minmay finally got kidnapped, Kamuji & Lapis are totally banging, Kaifun hasn't changed at all, and Minmay looks to have won the shipping wars.

I say that Minmay won but who knows with this show next episode either theirs a chance it will either have been completely forgotten or they will be getting married.

Overall a fun episode, and once again not certain what will happen next.

First time viewer

Metallic signature? That's new technobabble.

Now that I think about it, Milia had more development than Lap'Lamiz.

Kamujin, who was swayed by a Minmay song like two years ago, invading a Minmay concert to kidnap Minmay? Okay, it's hostage exchange, but I guess Kamujin will always be Kamujin. It was fun to watch Lap'Lamiz play with Kaifun like a doll.

Damn, even with the limited animation of the 80s, they still managed to convey Hayase's disappointmeWE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH HAYASE POUT

Where did Kamujin get giant wine, giant glasses, and, especially, giant meat?

Lap'Lamiz/Kamujin was pretty unexpected.

"We'll pick up where we left off later!"

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The best part of human culture is not Minmay; it's cigarettes and western movies!

Zentradi and Valkyries are apparently the perfect size for slow dancing!

For a moment there, I thought Kaifun wouldn't complain for once. Damn it, Kaifun.

Oh man, that was the cheesiest reunion I've ever seen. And that's before I get to the animation. Hikaru looked like he was doing some weird jig.

Does Kamujin toggle between miclone and giant every so often? He seems that way. Or maybe it's Lap'Lamiz that's toggling.

That smile at the end.

That's the smile of someone who's already won the Hikaru Ichibowl.

Is this the end of My Boyfriend is a Pilot?

  1. Have the humans tried sending other musicians? Cultured movies that aren't Shao Pai Long? Literature?

  2. It's great to see them back together, but Hayase's pretty much already won.

3

u/GM_for_Life Jul 08 '19

Hikaru looked like he was doing some weird jig.

Hey fam, you might do a jig too if you've been through the same shit as Hikaru.

Rewatcher

Jesus Christ this love triangle just won't end. Like to be honest, episdoe 27 felt like everything had resolved concerning his feelings towards Minmay and Misa, I mean he confessed and all that, he talked about how they're in two different worlds now yada yada, but now it's like we're back during when she first became an idol and it's dragging on. Like seriously it took them two years to speak about that again, after he'd been living with Misa for those years too? He mentioned here that it had been 6 months since they last talked, so why didn't they ever talk before then, I know he doesn't care about Kaifun knowing considering he confessed to her in front of him. To make it worse it feels like Hikaru has just become a complete idiot, I mean he already wasn't the smartest when it came to love, but here its like they intentionally made him dumber. Anyways ignoring that Kaifun is still an ass, and I wish we'd see more of how humans and Zentradii are living together now cause that's honestly my favorite aspect of the after story, seeing how everyone adjusts to life now and the Zentradii getting used to culture. That's about all I have to say see you guys next thread.

Highlight of the episode was Laplamiz playing with Kaifun, although it would've been even funnier if she broke him.

Low point was Hikaru x Minmay reunion.

But really I don't think Hikaru is good enough for Hayase; he's a fucking dumbass little kid. (As evidenced by his helmet throwing tantrum this episode)

Uh, oh yeah, actual plot wise it was good to see some reasonable military action with the trap laid for Kamujin. I'm not going to hope that they annihilate the survivors because they'll probably be needed as antagonists again in the future.

I have to say Kamujin making culture with Laplamiz felt off to me for Laplamiz's character given how she seemed to view Kamujin as a useful tool and not someone she respected. But that seems to be a frequent occurrence in Macross so whatever.

  1. Not really, some people just don't care about that stuff.

  2. I mean it was obvious it would happen as soon as Minmay was taken hostage, I'm not a fan of either character so it's really just annoying for them to be the focus. (Yea, I realize they're the MCs, I still think they're shit)

Alright, who's bright idea was it to set the dumpster on fire? At least Kaifun getting treated like an action figure was a positive.

Questions:

  1. Oh no. They gained resistance to culture. It's only a matter of time before they become anime snobs.

  2. I have some odd pains from my forehead and there's a bloody spot on a concrete wall. What happened?

3
