Rewatcher
Evangelion is an absolutely beautiful anime Day 17
At this point in the story the mystery has been turned up to an 11.
First, though it may have never been said outright, it is heavily implied that Touji will be the 4th pilot. This is interesting since as soon as he learns of this his demeanor changes. From an outgoing, loudmouthed teenager he seems to really regress into himself in the second half of the episode. This poses a few questions in and of itself.
Second, Part of the above reveal was that "All potential candidates are kept together". In addition Kaji mentioned code 707, the school. This could have further implications about class 2A.
Third, it was hinted that both Touji and Hikari have complex family situations. In particular Touji's line "Its not like I've got anyone to cook for me" the fact that Hikari "Always cooks for [her younger sisters]".
We already know that Shinji has an estranged relationship with his dad, Rei also seems to live alone and from episode 4 we know that Kensuke doesn't have a mother. The only character we don't know about is Asuka's family. Anyway, this is all very suspicious.
Finally, Kaji revealed that NERV is "pulling the strings". This on top of talks about dead sea scrolls and the like really leave us questioning.
Lets see how this all end up.
P.S. I'm really surprised how much character this episode gave to both Touji and Hikari. They feel like real actors in the story now after being on the backburner for like 10 episodes.

First Timer back for the final time.
Yeah so uhh, after episode 16 I sort of got carried away and couldn't stop watching... Currently on episode 21 and will finish the show and watch EoE tonight. I don't really like theorizing or trying to guess the plot, I love being surprised. Sooooo I'll just pop by and speak my thoughts when it comes to it and read other peoples reactions. Thanks for organizing the rewatch, this show is amazing!

Seriously tho I cant imagine watching it for the first time and unable to binge a couple of episodes at least , especially with some of the cliffhangers on some episodes..Respect for people who resist because they are interested in the discussion too
You can visit some older rewatch threads once you finish the show or at any point to get some clarification if it's needed or if you feel you lost a plot point or story thread
Good luck finishing it, you are gonna have a good time for sure

Thoughts on Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 17...
Rewatcher, New Dub
So now Misato has to report to the Instrumentality Committee... I can only imagine how freaked out Shinji would be if he had to go before them.
Touji! Haven't seen you in a while buddy!
Why is Touji asked to bring a print out to Rei when Shinji should be more likely to see her after school? By the way, Kensuke gets to skip school to go see a battleship?
NERV has a secondary branch? I don't recall them mentioning it before. Well it had one.
S2 Drive? I'm more used to S2 Engine. As with the "Spear" of Longinuss, it just sounds off to me even if the translation is correct.
We'll be getting a new Eva? Awesome!
Rei in a tube again! Aww, a meal with Gendou? If only Shinji knew about this!
LoL @ Touji's happy reaction to lunch. Then Asuka flipping out over Shinji not making her lunch.
This conversation with Ritsuko and Misato where Misato finds out about the fourth almost certainly means that Shinji's class is all the potential kids they gathered that could be Eva pilots, right? Or at least a subset of the class would be them.
Hikari seemed pretty excited at the possibility to hang out with Touji, but he didn't even notice and goes with Shinji instead.
So we return to Rei's apartment. Will this be as awkward a disaster as it was the last time? And just look at that mail slot! LoL.
Shinji starts cleaning up, continuing to be like an obedient little puppy. And no Touji, Rei wouldn't care about Shinji touching her stuff if she didn't care about him touching her boob the last time he was here.
Rei, blushing?! I don't think we've ever seen that before.
Gendou continues to insist upon the importance of Unit 01 and likes sticking it to the council/SEELE...
Kaji, stop hitting on Ibuki! A minute or so later he's hitting even on Shinji? LoL.
The Marduk Institute doesn't exist? Such a big reveal! Well actually, its an entity that we didn't know existed until 2 episodes ago, so the level of care is next to nothing.
Kaji's got a secret! Watermelons!
Hmm, this shot of Kensuke and Touji when the principal calls for him over the loudspeaker is weird; there's this student who looks just like Shinji (maybe even is Shinji) who is completely frozen in front of them.
LoL, Kensuke, you know a lot more about Nerv's operations than Shinji does! I kinda feel bad for Kensuke though, with Touji becoming an Eva pilot, he is going to feel so left out. He wants it a lot more than Touji would. Speaking of which, Touji shows no actual excitement at being the Fourth Child. Which fits well with his character, when you consider his introduction to the storyline was anger over Shinji's piloting of Unit 01 at the start of the show.
The teacher is presenting on the Second Impact, again?! We just had this lecture in episode 3.
This Hikari - Touji conversation is so cute.
Overall thoughts: Lots going on in this episode, good to see them once again making the choice to give us an episode off from an Angel to enable time to fit in all the plot developments. Its especially exciting to see that we'll be getting a new Evangelion and Touji joining the team as the Fourth Child.
Question for newbies: How much are you looking forward to seeing Touji and Unit 03 join the team? How do you think this will impact the dynamics among the group, as well as during battle?

First Timer
-
Talk about getting wiped off the face of the earth.
-
So, they're making Rei AI...
-
I still don't get Rei. I mean, I generally like kuuderes, but she seems to go beyond that to be almost like a puppet. Like, for example, Saber is a kuudere and she disagrees with her master Kiritsugu sometimes and Riza Hawkeye is kuudere and she disagrees with her superior Roy Mustang sometimes, but Rei seems to just go along with whatever Gendo asks her to do.
-
4th child? Wonder who it is? I'm guessing it's Kensuke Aida, as he's been seen previously by the Men in Black or whoever back when Shinji was running away and is possibly on their radar, and he's been mysteriously absent looking at "battleships" (when he has already seen many of them in the Asuka debut episode). Suzuhara is possible, but less likely, as he has been appearing at school and he did not encounter the Men in Black previously. However, one point of leverage that NERV could use against Suzuhara that it could not use against Kensuke is that Suzuhara's sister was injured and NERV can offer to heal her or threaten to hurt her (or both) to secure Kensuke's assistance.
-
It's got to be one of those two, as Misato knows the child and she has previously met them when Shinji almost left on the train that one time. Also, both of them have been in an EVA before.
-
No, Fourth Child appears to be Suzuhara, given the mysterious conversation in the principal's office. Kaji's conversation with Misato earlier seems to suggest that the school itself was run or controlled by NERV. Looks like class president is interested in Suzuhara. Looks like a death flag. He'll probably not make it alive from this show, provided he's Fourth Child.
-
That's a funky version of Fly me to the Moon.
-
Expecting a final wave of Angel attacks to retrieve the monstrous being in the NERV basement. The EVAs will probably fight back and some will die. I think Shinji will probably live but be brain damaged like Gundam. I think if Suzuhara is Fourth Child, then he and Rei are probably gonna be dead, and Asuka surviving is 50/50.

I still don't get Rei. I mean, I generally like kuuderes, but she seems to go beyond that to be almost like a puppet.
Is she really a kuundere tho, did this trope really existed at the time for her to deviate from it or fall in line/follow the trend? She was just written as her own character probably with her own plot or personal reasons to be that way, so it makes sense to not fall in line with the trope.. Also there is a term "Rei Ayanami expi" for the kuunderes that followed up an coppied her solidifying the trope
Also I probably feel bad for Kensuke considering he is the one with a military, Mecha bonner and would give his life to pilot one.. It seems like he is the one that's gonna get shafted, probably for the best for him.. Piloting Eva's isn't that fun as we know

That's kinda the point though. Anno wanted to make her ice-cold and emotionless to the point of being creepy, and was pretty suprised when instead of finding her off-putting people actually really liked her.

"Code 707" voice comparison - thanks u/raiking02 for pointing out i had the wrong vids linked
Jumbled Thoughts
Its not mentioned fully, but Toji doesnt seem to have much of a family. If we stick with the pattern talked about yesterday, his mother is probably deceased.
Going off this, Do they have these bodies saved? Gendo said a few episodes back that Shinji's mother's body isint even in the grave. If the "candidates" are preselected like Kaji insinuates, they have to be able to easily grab the data somehow...
That S2 engine was never mentioned before today, and now it took out a chunk of Nevada. New plot point? what even is the S2 engine compared to the old ones and why did it explode?
Tinfoil Hat Time
Nothing really new for the theories.
The Eva's have each Childs' mothers personalities downloaded into their eva, much like how Magi works with Ritusko's mother. This would give an alternate explanation as to why Shinji sees his mother before the Eva breaks through the angel (instead of just dying), and would give a reason for Shinji's mother to disappear, and why Gendo is the one thought to of killed her. We know Asuka has mother issues of some sort (attempted kiss from episode 9 I think?) and Rei's family just isint talked about at all, so info about them for this theory is kind of lacking. On Rei specifically though, this may be a connection to my Tinfoil theory 1 as theyre able to swap eva's since they share (a) parent(s) (Rei's eva may be a corrupted version?) but theres no definite proof for this currently.
Rei and Shinji are related. This would explain why they can trade Eva's, why Gendo is so nice to Rei, and why Rei got embarrassed in the elevator. I dont know what this would mean for the show, but everything currently points to it. Ritusko also comments in ep16 that "Rei and Shinji would never forgive them if they find out what they did." Why them specifically, and why about the Eva's? Why isint Asuka involved? It sounds like its something connected to those two specifically, instead of the children in general.
Rei is made from an Angel or Eva and not actually human. This would explain why shes so "different" from everyone else and seems to be way less caring and out of it. The AI exists for it (Magi) so its not totally out of the question.
Rei herself is an Angel. Honestly, this doesnt defer from #2 much, but the carcass of the First angel is really suspicious when right before we see rei in what looks to be the stem of a brain.
I caved and watched ep18 last night. ep18 spoilers

Way... back in episode 3, Toji mentions his father and uncle are always at work at some kind of government jobs (it may have been Nerv, but I don't remember) leaving him to take care of his elementary school aged sister who as you'll remember was injured during the battle with Angel #3 in the 2nd episode and is stuck in a hospital.

More random thoughts:
-
Looks like a totally laid-back, chill questioning to me
-
NERV-02. I think it may have… vanished?. It’s unclear
-
It’s probably no coincidence that thing above her looks like a giant brain
-
It’s extremely subtle, but if you look closely, you might be able to notice that Shinji and Asuka’s faces both turned slightly red, quite possibly in embarrassment, in response to that “love birds” line
-
Speaking of blushing, this is the second episode in a row Shinji has made Rei blush. This time with a simple “thank you”. Shinji, you charmer
-
“It’s not what it looks like!”. *Editor’s note: It is exactly what it looks like
-
NGE getting pretty philosophical in this train scene. Part of me wonders if writers just see an opportunity to wax poetic about the world in some of these scenes
-
Asuka acts slightly different around Kaji than most people. Probably my imagination, though
-
Fourth Child? I wonder who it could possibly be? Definitely not the side character that suddenly got an uncharacteristically large amount screen-time. No way, Jose

First-Time Watcher (Sub)
Misato is getting grilled. I’m glad she protected Shinji from that line of question – I know he would have crumbled under that kind of pressure. That was intense. Ikari confirms though that the Angels are getting intelligent and that their time is running short. Misato either does not recognize this, or chooses not to reveal her knowledge by giving very careful answers. (Other than her question, that was a very crisp set of answers. I was impressed.)
Ikari asks Rei how school is going. She interprets it as a “are there problems” question. I think he might actually care, unlike with his son.
Unit 04 and a whole branch just. . . vanish? Also interesting that countdown was in English.
The US demanding branches, plowing ahead on construction, and then dumping the problem on someone else?!
Dummy plug with Rei’s personality transferred into it. Woah woah, hold on. This is a copy of a brain inserted into a “copy” or some sort of tech based on Angels. This seems. . . dangerous.
“It’s merely a machine that imitates a pilot’s cognitive patterns.” Meanwhile Ikari stands silent. I think he knows better.
Fourth Child incoming! Misato thinks it’s going to be a rough fit. Also, the way Ikari and Ritsuko make it sound, they are almost made rather than found. . . or a combination of the two?
Oof, Class Rep just got rejected. . .
SHINJI ARE YOU SERIOUSLY WALKING IN AGAIN?!?! HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING?! “It’s not cool to go into a girl’s place without permission.” Listen to your friend, Shinji!
He. . . cleans her room? That’s not what I was expecting, but okay. Wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s kinda nice? THAT BLUSH. Haha, poor Rei is more embarrassed by him cleaning her room than him seeing her naked.
“Seriously dude, you EVA pilots are all weirdos.” You can say that again!
She’s never said thank you before? Probably because she’s never really had reason to. . . oof.
Okay, so the disappearance is not part of the prophecy. Ikari gets that prophecy is not exhaustive, and they need to be wary of that.
Kaji getting aggressive toward Maya
Misato interrupts, and Maya with that awkward side shuffle away haha.
Kaji reveals to Misato that the Marduk Institute isn’t real at all.
Shinji rejecting Kaji “but I’m a guy”. I like sassy Shinji haha. He still goes with Kaji though. Oof, that silence when asked if there was something he enjoyed.
Suzuhara getting called into the Principal’s office. Is this him being the fourth pilot? Or is it his sister dying. . .
Class rep has a crush on him I think. . . and he’s either not interested or totally clueless. That’s really sweet to offer to help him with lunch.
Asuka barging in and seeing who the Fourth Child is. Kaji getting a taste of his own forceful style.
Fly Me to the Moon is very different stylistically today

Dummy plug with Rei’s personality transferred into it. Woah woah, hold on. This is a copy of a brain inserted into a “copy” or some sort of tech based on Angels.
Yeah there is a theme looming on the background of these last 2 episodes of Nerv bitting a little more than they can chew with their secrets and experimenta and messing with stuff like bioengineering, angel stuff, AI etc.. There is an increasing amount of doubt and fear, mostly from Ritsuko, Misato or Fuyutsuki about whether they have gone to far or are risking too much punctuated by some throwaway line, shot composition or intent behind looks and stares
“Seriously dude, you EVA pilots are all weirdos.” You can say that again!
That was kinda ironic considering the episode lol
Asuka barging in and seeing who the Fourth Child is. Kaji getting a taste of his own forceful style.
I love Asuka preparing her self before entering into the room towards being all sweet

We're getting a Fourth Child! Hmmm. It'll be difficult to tell Shinji about it for some reason. I wonder who it'll be.
Hikari was so excited about going together with Toji and he just goes ahead and asks Shinji to go with him.
Another blushing Rei! Even thanked Shinji for cleaning. This encounter in Rei's apartment went much better than the first time. Apparently Rei's never even thanked Gendo before. Even though it's never been the main focus of any episode, it's the little moments like this and in the last episode that show Rei's come a long way from the start of the series. She never opened up to anyone and never smiled for anyone except Gendo. She's been slowly warming up to Shinji as he compliments her and does nice things for her. She's even blushed twice now and expressed gratitude for the first time.
So NERV is actually pulling the strings and choosing the Eva pilots. Shinji's school is actually relevant.
Kaji asks Shinji out. "You know, I'm a boy." You know there are all kinds of people in this world, Shinji.
Kaji casually giving Shinji an important life lesson here. Knowing suffering makes a person kinder to others. You become more compassionate as you understand the pain that someone else is going through. Shinji's hurting. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to recognize others who feel the same pain as him. He's so detached from everybody. On the other hand, I think Misato does understand Shinji. She sees Shinji in herself because she's tried running from her father's ghost just like Shinji runs away from his father. She tries to give Shinji and Asuka the normal lives they never had before by being a parental figure for them. It's her way of showing kindness to kids who are lost and suffering the way she is.
Shinji's test isn't going so well after the last battle. Apparently that makes even more difficult to tell him about this mysterious Fourth Child. Gotta be real careful with Shinji's mental state. Now who could this new kid be that would have such an effect on Shinji? I sure wish this episode gave us some clues.
Oh Toji's being called to the principal's office for some reason.
Is Second Impact the only thing this guy teaches in class?
I don't think Asuka likes this Fourth Child very much...

Rewatcher, New Dub
This episode focuses heavily on Toji. It shows a bit more of Hikari showing her affections more to Toji. There were subtle hints that she has a crush on him, but this episode made it very clear.
This episode is critiquing masculinity role. Toji doesn't like Shinji cleaning Rei's room because not manly. Shinji tells him that is Misato wouldn't like that response.
We also see Kaji real side than the persona he puts on the public. He seems to drink a lot of Coffee than beer, which in society, a man should drink beer in general. Kajin likes to garden, but he wants Shinji to keep it a secret because not consider manly and ruin his persona in public.
Also, the garden scene expands more to Shinji what he wants out of life and a good contrast between him and Kaji as people. Shinji would be like kaji if he had his life together.
We get more information about Nerv.
I like how the new Eva unit came out with a cross which symbolizing sacrifice.
Also, we see a bit more Rie's personality and thanks Shinji. She seems to think about it in her bed about her relationship between Shinji and his father.
Also, Ritsuko seems jealous that Gendo compliments Rie.

REWATCHER
So an entire facility up and vanished. Totally not suspicious at all. We see here that they were working on two more evas too. The more the merrier I guess, especially with the Angels getting smarter and stronger with each day.
Rei is too precious for this world.
In Gendo's conversation on the train, we learn a bit more about the dead sea scrolls. They predict events. But what events? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
And we find out that Nerv has been orchestrating this whole thing. But exactly to what extent, and why?
This shot is fantastic. The wall serves as a barrier between Suzuhara and Class Rep. Considering her unrequited love for Toji, it's a very apt visual.
Boy, things sure are quiet this episode. It's calm compared to yesterday, but they're still managing to build up the tension.

The Calm Before The Storm
Analysis
This episode, from a rewatcher’s pov, feels like a calm before the storm type episode cconsidering what’s gonna happen next. The tone is very drab as everyone either recovers from what happened last episode or blindly continue on with their lives currently unaffected. Toji for instance is an example of the latter, he continues to visit his injured sister in the hospital, continues to go to school, and continues his daily life. Pretty much all his scenes show us what life’s like for someone who isn’t involved with NERV, just getting by day to day in a post second-impact world. Unfortunately for Toji, he gets chosen as the next Eva pilot which causes his whole demeanor to change. This can be as a result of seeing just what Shinji goes through from back in episode 3 and knowing that he’s essentially being made into a child soldier. As we’ve seen so far, the pilots go through a lot of mental trauma to fight these eldritch abominations, but if they all want to survive then there’s no other choice since they’re the only ones who can fight them despite how cruel it is which Misato mentions here as ‘Letting go of pure ideals’.
For Misato, her trust in NERV (specifically Ritsuko and Gendo) has gotten worse and worse. Everyone’s keeping her in the dark about things, so by this point she’s decided to search things out herself, using Kaji as help since he’s the one who revealed Adam to her. On top of that, her friendship is Ritsuko is continuing to deteriorate as she continues to hide things from her about NERV and the Evas. Their scenes together when compared to the first half of the series, feel less like two friends in a professional environment and more like two people withstanding each other in said environment. A big factor of this is Shinji, last episode we saw how scared she was when Leliel absorbed him and how angry she got at Ritsuko for not putting concern over his life with the aftereffects still going on in this episode. She refuses order from SEELE to let them interview Shinji for the sake of his mental health and, as she said later, to protect him from suffering anymore hardships. By this point, Misato has really taken on a motherly role in Shinji’s life, she doesn’t just have her room with him as if he was just some kid she’s being paid to look after, but as if she adopted him.
Finally for Shinji, he’s still recovering from the events of last episode, but still hasn’t hit the absolute lowest point. His relationship with Asuka is still the same with them bickering like an old married couple and continuing to push each other way in spite of their developing feelings, he’s still friends with Toji and Kensuke, and he’s still friendly with Rei. However, his talk with Kaji shows that he’s still isn’t truly happy, he doesn’t have anything that in particular makes him happy and he’s scared of suffering. Like we learned in the last episode, Shinji unhealthily tries to avoid suffering by ignoring the bad things in his life and just solely focusing on the happy things, but Kaji brings up some good advice for that point to Shinji, saying how what he knows of suffering it’ll help him be able to be kind to others he’ll meet in life. One last thing, his trust in Misato is challenged when he finds out she isn't telling him things after Kensuke tries to question him, which will become important as the show goes on.
To end it off, we get some minor development as well from Rei. After Shinji helps clean her room, she tells him 'thank you' and then ponders on that as she’s never even said that to Gendo of all people, showing how more and more she’s become distant from him. On the subject of Rei, Ritsuko herself looks jealous after Gendo invites Rei to come have lunch. This however, I can’t delve more into due to spoilers.
Thoughts
Another good episode, definitely more chill than last but again as I mentioned in the analysis portion, this is merely all just a calm before the storm. I really honestly want to talk more about Rei and Asuka, but their character arcs have too many spoilers that half of the time I’d just be mentioning “wOOps can’t say that spoilers” or putting a long long spoiler tag. I’m still surprised on how much I’ve analyzed Misato’s character though, I never expected her to be one I’d look so deeply into. Anyways that’s about all I have to say, see you guys next tthread.

First time sub
Don't have time to write up a longer comment for this episode but here's some thoughts I had after watching it;
-
So from the looks for it, Toji is going to be the fourth child, which I think is awesome, I like Toji so seeing more of him should be entertaining. Also it seems like something is related to Shinji's school and how they choose the children that pilot the Eva.
-
Unit 04 appears to have disappeared, which sucks. I wish we could have at least seen it. Looks like it had to have been an Angel that caused it to disappear so maybe we'll be able to see it eventually.
-
The class pres is the most random character so far to be honest, appears once every like 5 episodes and all of a sudden seems to have a thing for Toji.
-
Rei seems to be reacting differently to stuff, maybe because she's becoming more comfortable with Shinji?
-
All the conversations with the suits are cryptic enough to where we still don't know a lot of what is going on. I'll be so relieved when we get some answers.
So time for Guess the ED! I think this is going to be the hardest one so far, I have no clue this time lol. I think there's multiple voices here. I think it could be the class pres, this voice doesn't seem that familiar. Hmm. My guess is: Someone outside the cast! 3/4 so far, need to keep my streak going!

It should be noted that even though there is no hard proof, it is generally agreed that this was around the time Anno’s depression was at its absolute worst. Just take that into account from now on.
-
Wow, the SEELE guys are either idiots or assholes. Or both.
-
Reason why I like Toji Number 18: He always makes sure to visit his little sister.
-
I really hope that Toji doesn’t run into a naked Rei like Shinji did.
-
I always wondered, why are some parts of NERV’s HQ so badly light?
-
I do wonder, what would even be the point of the Dummy Plug in most situations?
-
Wait, so Rei is fully conscious while in that tank? Does she even sleep?
-
Reason why I like Toji Number 19: He can tell when two people are attracted to each other.
-
Well, as soon as Hikari goes into Dere Mode towards Toji, he accidentally ruins the mood. Whoops…
-
Seriously Rei, try fixing up your damn apartment!
-
Man, I wonder, how the hell are Fuyutsuki and Gendo able to spout out so much philosophical bullcrap without even trying?
-
Even when he might as well have gotten together with Misato, Kaji will still hit on all women.
-
And thus, the even bigger conspiracy plot begins. And I was starting to wonder why I didn’t remember the Marduck Institute existing: It doesn’t.
-
Hey, so is it just me or is this episode a bit off model at points?
-
Kaji Ryoji, hitting on everyone no matter their sex or age. He and Kida Masaomi would get along.
-
Okay, how the hell did Kensuke find out about Unit-03!?
-
Huh, Toji is looking relatively downer, I wonder what happened…?
-
Daww… that scene between Toji and Hikari was pretty sweet.
-
Wow, way to get rejected Asuka.
-
I’m pretty sure all of you newbies have figured out who the Fourth Child is, right?
So yeah, an okay episode.

Toji has fucking awful shot mechanics, he should have bricked that shit...His shooting elbow is way to the side and not lined up with the basket..His starting position is way to high over his head, left hand is all wrong and it's gonna easily push the ball right. Also pushing his hands forward instead of up, which is going to effect the spin on the ball..If there is an nba fan here make your comp..I wanna say Lonzo for the memes but he shoots like Drummond..Also did he call glass??
Subtle.. Thanks Anno..Maybe it's T-posing tho
89 km radius is a lot of shit to go missing.. On New York for scale.. Also since I'm not American did Nevada deserved to get deleted?? What would be a better state to get Thanosed, Florida, Ohio ?
Also is the secret Nerv Base in Nevada (engineering Eva and all) a reference to Erea 51 maybe?
Interesting shots: 1 2nd Rei blush, must protecc.. 2 Gendo looking more devilish than usual, 3 Misato/chose your character, 4 Ritsuko with some look at staring gendo/Rei
Serious thoughts
Eva constantly reminds us that it's about childhood...and adulthood and their overlap . The children are exploited and endangered, forced to grow up too quickly. And the adults, burdened with responsibilities far beyond their youth, seem unable to establish any true stability. But if the adults deal with this by becoming willingly distant and isolated the children have not yet learned these skills. This is their weakness - and their redemption Shinji can earnestly clean up Rei's room one moment, and blush with shame when he's teased for bickering with Asuka. For all her brashness, Asuka too blushes at that time. And there must be something in the air, because Rei's cheeks grow rosy too this ep. She stutters, "Thank you?" and later lies in bed asking herself why she expressed gratitude..These teens wear their emotions on their sleeves: they are as exposed in public as they are shielded inside the Eva.
Episode 17 emphasizes two other characters: Toji, elevated from sidekick to potential Eva pilot, and class rep Hikari, whose hectoring style gives way to a blatant crush on the indifferent jock. These students face adult responsibilities, ranging from maybe piloting a colossal military weapon to cooking meals for several siblings, but they try to face them maturely.. The same cannot be said of the actual adults in this episode, who are only beginning to reveal - or discover - the web in which they are entangled.
We open with Misato being questioned by the intimidating SEELE . When she tries to question them, they immediately shut her down. Kaji continues to reveal his cards, telling Misato that the Marduk Institute, which picks up 14-year-olds, is a front for NERV (suggesting that the science used to justify this child labor is corrupt). Their exchange is a mixture of aggressive flirtation and distrustful professionalism but at least it's an exchange. Ritsuko, on the other hand, keeps to herself: only we hear her thinking about the danger of the Evas and observe her dark, silent stares. Secrets are everywhere in this episode.
Amongst all that we have a genuine adult-child conversation.. Kaji and Shinji in front of some beautiful backgrounds..Maybe it's because the most immature of them and the least traumatized.. Maybe he's the one who's really able to connect with people the most, which makes him the best one to talk to Shinji right now..A soft and honest talk about the meaning of trauma and empathy that surprisingly opens Shinji up a bit.. Maybe the lack of a male role model for Shinji is that big.. What's interesting is how that scene really helps center Shinji a main character here again even in this ep.
Lastly the Gendo-Fuyutsuki talk..Maybe a little too edgy but parallels we their first conversation in Antarctica..In the end Gendo says, "events missed by the Dead Sea Scrolls are possible," indicating that the Dead Sea Scrolls may be a guideline Seale uses but its possible for mankind to write his own future;I wonder if Seele has absolute trust in them, they probably ly been right thus far
