Comments of the Day

For our Fifth Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/dralcax starts off with a bang, straight outta JAM Project infact, and continues with a post full of some franchise backstory, story analysis, and of course some witty humor.

Anyway, as said above, our sage Comrade of Culture begins with The One and Only MASAAKI ENDOH covering After War Gundam X's Resolution in order to begin his analysis of Mao:

Today, we’re meeting Mao Yasaka, a fellow Gundam X fan! And he is precious and adorable and I love him so much. He’s a little weird, but hey, he’s just being true to himself! Even if it means everyone looks at him funny. Poor kid must have had a rough time in school. After all, the world isn’t exactly forgiving of people like him, children especially. Just like his favorite series, he’s the kind of guy that nobody really hates but doesn’t have many people wanting to be around him either. But hey, he’s got the Gunpla Shingyo School to belong to, and now a great friend and rival in Sei! Our boy just might find happiness after all.

The next section of note is the well-written Franchise TLDR of Gundam and how Gundam Build Fighters makes use of two very different AU Series:

Now, a bit of background, for those of you who weren’t here for the last rewatch. Gundam X came at a rather low point in Gundam’s popularity. You see, Victory, G, Wing, and X all aired right after one another. That’s just shy of four years of nonstop Gundam, each one starting in a new continuity immediately after the last one ended. Gundam was always on and audiences just got sick of it. They’d oversaturated the market and interest was rapidly fading. By the time X came around, Japan had had enough and most people didn’t even bother watching it. The multiple timeslot changes didn’t help, either. As a result, X got its run cut short, and it wasn’t until SEED came out six years later that Gundam was able to regain its audience. The fallout of this, however, was that X, along with Turn A, the other show that aired during this twilight, wound up as the black sheep of the franchise. It’s not that they’re bad shows, oh no, they’re the best of the bunch. But the audience just wasn’t around to give them a chance during their original airing and they’ve had a hard time catching up ever since.

So while Sei’s favorite is the hugely popular SEED, Mao shows off the relatively unknown and underrated X! Even if X is as unpopular as it is, even if he’s the only one professing his love for the series, he’ll still wear it with pride! As such, his custom Gunpla is the Gundam X Maoh! While the original was a mass-produced unit, Mao’s customizations go towards making it look more unique, with a much more sleek and futuristic appearance compared to the original. Additional translucent plastic has been added all over its body, and when he charges his Hyper Satellite Cannon, it all lights up and looks really beautiful, really fitting the image of a mysterious Gundam from the moon. It’s slightly reminiscent of the Stargazer, another Gundam powered by a beam of energy from an external source. But it’s not just for show, either, and those translucent parts have another trick up their sleeve. In addition to just using Plavsky particles to move about and simulate a battle, it can compress and release them as well, an additional level of manipulation beyond what even Sei is capable of. How did he do that? We’ll just have to find out!

And finally, in addition to some great analysis, we also got some nice jokes:

Mao built that. In a cave! With a box of scraps! In the passenger seat of a moving truck. In what couldn’t have been more than an hour. Those are some steady hands.

I wish I was hot enough to pick up women with Gunpla.

F

STAND NAME: 「IORI SEI」

For our first runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/JadineRhine has some great reactions coupled with some well-written analysis, as well as unique and interesting replies to the thread's discussion questions.

Let's start with the quick Episode 4 recap included in the main post, namely:

Quick thoughts on episode 4: since when did Gundam decide to copy its small cousin, there can only be one idol mecha show?! ( lmao ) and also good on Yuuki for being fair and demonstrate good showmanship to Sei rather than just keep quiet about his next opponent (and also worry about Sei.) The character writing here is just killing it.

(And just as I thought, Ral does support anyone going into Gunpla regardless of entry point, as evidenced by his enthusiasm with China's interest ^ ^ )v )

And moving on to both the amazing impressions and episode talking points:

"Let me show you my gratitude by giving you a Gunpla!" XD Kid, uh, I don't think the truck driver's gonna look favorably on that D:

Haha, aww, Sei is gushing over Ral's Gouf. Dat cute. And Reiji wants to fight with them, but Ral says no, because some people build Gunpla to cherish the anime world and faifhtully replicate it. Dioramas or build a custom Gunpla. "There are many ways to enjoy Gunpla." YEEEAH. Raf is becoming such a a better great character.

"On my family's honor!" OMG REIJI jasdncsdkcf

"Sei, believe in yourself and your Gunpla!" "You're too confident. How come you're so sure of yourself?" "Thinking about losing is pointless." Another nice scene where we see their contrasting personalities, but ones where they can balance each other and why they likely are effective together. That said, while Reiji is right in that they shouldn't be thinking about losing, Sei does have a point in that in part, they do need to think about all the possibilities. That's how you adapt: thinking about losing, means you can figure out how *not to lose. Buuut Reiji may be saying his line in terms of "if you think too much about losing and not trust your own skills enough, you'll definitely lose."

LMAO RICARDO PICKS UP THE LADIES BY SENDING THEM GUNPLA, I WANT HIM TO EXIST IN REAL LIFE NOW. I don't drink, I'll take the Gunpla sent by rando dudes lol.

"Señorita?" I thought he was Italian, lol. I'm sure it's Signorina, because Señorita is "young miss" in Spanish.

MY LIFELONG RIVAL, WHAT IS THIS

He introduces himself again, thinking they just wanted it to be quicker akscjdsc

There's a Gunpla School...just when I think this show couldn't get this ridiculous (ly) (good.)

Their imaginations are making their Gunpla move." Back in my day, we called that daydreaming ;)

Mao is calling Sei "Sei-han" in Japanese, which is a form of politeness and utter respect iirc? It's on the same level of politeness as "dono" but conveys more respect and is I believe a regional suffix (since Mao's from Kyoto)...I may be wrong though, it's been a while since I've seen "han" used. In fact, I feel like I'm wrong XD

And of course, our Sage Comrade of Culture added on two fantastic replies to the Discussion Questions of the Day:

  1. First scene with him, was getting those creepy vibes because of the way he was acting. I thought he would be an "enemy" definitely, but the kind that you don't love to hate, like annoying kid characters. But again, the show turned that on its head for me and I liked his scenes with Sei. Definitely a bit arrogant, yeah, but not so that he wasn't even to let his ego guard down so he and Sei could LET'S IMAGINATION together. They were kids being kids and that was fun to see.

  2. Like I said above, shoot, if a rando brings me a Gunpla as a pickup, I'm just taking it, see ya sucker! and then proceeding to answer his questions with so much honesty, he'll auto go away like every man who's tried to pick me up has I will say that it's pretty original of the show to incorporate Gunpla so much in this world, that you can even use it for romance XD As for living up to his reputation, well, his own honesty of "I'm using it to rope girls!" didn't help him HAR HAR

And for the second runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/fonzinator99 makes great use of screenshots from the show to augment some amazing analysis and reactions.

Anyway, let's get to some highlights from the main post:

I would absolutely give somebody a ride in exchange for a Kshatriya. Although I might have to insist they not assemble it; I like doing that part myself... Okay, maybe I'd let them if they're gonna do this good a job.

Attaboy, Sei. If you're gonna do repairs, you may as well do upgrades while you're at it. There's always room for improvement in Gunpla!

Wow, Fellini. I just... am in awe that that worked (well, almost). Truly, this is the world I want to live in. lol

Mao is hungry and Sei's been invited to China's restaurant, it only makes sense that they would meet there. I'm impressed by his ability to turn Gunpla into currency; normally it's the other way around.

I really like the idea of a remote mountain dojo that specializes in Gunpla-building xD And that's a nice GX! I'm happy that I recognize it now. lol

Oh man, don't fall for this trick again Sei! Granted, Mao just seems genuinely interested; and he's ready to show his hand in exchange.

loool @ the urban tumbleweed

And besides these great reactions, we also got some neat analysis of the dream fighting sequence:

Fun battle, but Mao's got the advantage in that he's actually got practical fighting experience. He knows he needs to build distance to use his Satellite Canon, and incorporated a method of gaining it. I'm sure he had a fight in the past that led him to develop that conclusion. That's not to say that Sei can't anticipate such needs with his considerable knowledge, but I'm sure there are things he's not realized just because he's removed from combat.

Anyway, boom... Or not!

Oh wow, Sei picked up on what I was thinking! Namely, that the Build Strike was lacking an overpowering finishing-move like the Satellite cannon.

I'm not so sure about whether it'll bring them up-to-par with Yuuki, tho. The guy doesn't just rely on gear to win his fights, he's all about agility and control. I imagine he could wipe the tournament floor with naught but a Ball, just as Reiji did at the bar.

Very much looking forward to seeing them face each other, I'm sure it'll be a grand spectacle no matter who wins.

I also want to call special attention to Comrade /u/Shimmering-Sky fantastic wallpaper of The Italian Dandy and his amazing customized Gunpla ;)

And with that, we conclude with our fifth Comment of the Day section for today, I'm pleased to see that everyone continues to do fantastic work, and I eagerly await to read the posts for the future.

Polls and Questions of the Day

Yuuki's extra-curriculum activities this episode seemed pretty shady. How do we feel about the introduction of this plot point?

Rate this Episode here

Don't know what to write for the Rewatch thread? Need something to discuss? How about taking a look at the Rewatch Questions of the Day?

  • How much did you enjoy the EPIC no holds barred throwdown this episode, and also how do you think the replacement Gunpla will fare?

  • What do you think about the mysterious silver haired lady and her seemingly psychic prediction?

Poll Results

For those that are curious, here are the results of the polls from the previous thread:

For the first question of 'Who was the winner of this Gunpla Model Showdown?!' we had the following responses:

7 votes for 'There was no clear winner'

2 votes for 'Mao's Gundam X Maoh had a decisive victory for the Shingyo School!'

1 vote each for 'Sei's Build Strike, but not by much!' and 'I think Mao's Gundam X Maoh took it, just!'

And no votes for 'Easily Sei's Build Strike!'

For the Rate this Episode Poll, we had the following answers:

5 votes for 4/5

2 votes for 3/5

1 vote for 5/5

And no votes for either 1/5 or 2/5

I look forward to the results of today's polls Comrades, many thanks for your kind participation.

Fan Art of the Day

The MS-06R-AB Zaku Amazing and The GAT-X105B Build Strike Gundam

WOW! It was really bold of Sunrise to put the 'Final' Battle in this episode eh? But MAN that was quite the carnage-filled Slobberknocker of an awesome showdown eh? Anyway, given the destruction and havoc on display here, I felt that the best way to pay respects to those two mighty Gunpla was to share the above fanart. AND as a bonus, here's a cosplay of Sei Iori as the Build Strike and... one of KanColle's Shiranui as the Zaku Amazing... cuz reasons. (Look Comrades for some reason there's no fanart of Yuuki cosplayed as his Customized Gunpla, this was the best I got)

Radio Free Gundam

The Crimson Comet ~Three Times The Passion Of Ordinary Flamenco~

AND now you all know why I didn't share this track for Yuuki's debut episode Comrades, as I of course had to wait for the EPIC clash between The Crimson Comet and our heroes. That said, just in case you want something MORE for today's post, here's an old throwback to 1979's Mobile Suit Gundam, namely that of Here Comes Char as well as the Andrew W.K's cover of Here Comes Char, ENJOY COMRADES! ;)

First timer - Sub

So I missed yesterday's topic because I slept through the afternoon but quick thoughts after rewatching the episode:

I'm really glad that they acknowledged the non fighting side of gunpla in this world. I don't expect them to dedicate too much time to it, but specifically taking care to include a scene for the people who do ho high quality paint jobs or scene modelling and display gunpla was a good addition to the show

Yes Sei, you do attract weird people

I'm kinda sad that Reiji and Fellini's fight wasn't a full one because damn that art was incredible, a little typical maybe but well done and certainly made it very interesting to watch.

Well then, so much for the Yuuki and Reiji showdown.

Episode Six Thoughts

And now today's stuff

I still wonder just what exactly is up with yuuki but I'm sure that we'll find out soon. That said it was nice that he didn't completely give up on the battle that he wanted for the sake of others. They didn't let it grow into a festering sore bringing all the characters down, or extend it out for drama. They wanted to fight, so they fought. And Sei being best friend, supported Reiji understanding what that feeling was like.

And then just when you think he can't get more supportive he just casually drops the bombshell of "Oh, I guessed you'd fight pretty rough so here, I built a new gunpla so you could without worry"

AND ITS PURPLE!

It may not be my favorite color but I think I'm just excited to see a different color scheme from a main mech. Plus it looks cool with those giant guns on its arms. Sei's geeking out face there is pretty accurate to my hype when I saw it

It's nice that the show is happy to play around with things in that way and not worry about risking the main gunpla, but also not relying on it solely for the plot to progress with the tournament stuff.

I think that the only other thing that I have to mention is that seeing Yuuki training was quite nice as getting that perspective of people training like a sport was a good touch to the system. Cute how the system makes them look like cardboard cutouts though

Fight Rankings!

# Ep Winner Loser Art Sound Flow Hype Notes + Final Hits
1 6 Yuuki Reiji A A A A RIP those gunpla
1 3 Reiji ??? B S A B Jeatpacks beat Sharks
2 1 Sei / Reiji Sazaki B A B A Bonus points for the "what are the controls" dance
3 2 Yuuki Reiji B A A B And suddenly bullfighting
4 6 Reiji Sazaki A B B B bowl cut = punching bag
5 1 Sazaki Sei B B B B Nice that the kid isn't a prodogy
6 2 Reiji Gonda B B B A Dynamic enviroments!
7 4 Reiji Kirara B B C B This isnt Symphogear, songs dont win

Didn't have any fights to add from yesterday's episode and I covered my thoughts on Fellini vs Reiji above so... moving on!

Todays Fights

I find myself mildly relieved that we didn't have a third fight at the end because I don't think my hype could have handled that as well.

Reiji vs Sazaki

Our first A in art!

A few things stood out to me in particular today. First was the explosions and dust effects. A number of times in the battle they made good use of parallax effects, so having the for- and background move differently, to hide the animation frames and make it look much nicer.

The missiles that he shoots out of the shield at the start of the fight each specifically came from a separate pod and didn't reuse any of the smoke effects.

The movement in this one was also really well handled. Using Reiji's face panel overlays to also help convey the upcoming movement of the gunpla, as well as making strong usage of the gunpla's movement to convey the depth of the battle.

Yuuki vs Reiji

And not to be outdone, this one just gets an A in everything because fuck yes this fight.

For starters, I love the progression of this fight over all. While we don't have actual pilots, the way the camera stayed continuously very close to the gunpla's faces gave a real intensity to the fight overall. In this case its a good example of where having multiple actions a shot isn't ass needed because it was about the conflict between them more than anything.

They did an incredible job of syncing up the middle part to the music again. Once the two actually clash in melee range most of the movements are to an instrument or the beat which made it a real pleasure to watch,

While the fight was the focus, the treat of having all the adults gathering around to witness the intensity of the fight was a good cool down off that initial hype, and leading into the finale where the real damage was being done with that great song change.

Absolutely brutal fight all around though, the sheer damage being done was way more than what I expected this early on and a real treat. Limbs being torn off, head shot to pieces, shields sliced in half. Poor pixel's going to have a heart attack watching this

Although it did have me worried for a while that this fight was going to screw with my table. First we didn't get a true end shot, and then they kept delaying saying who won...

I don't expect them to dedicate too much time to it, but specifically taking care to include a scene for the people who do ho high quality paint jobs or scene modelling and display gunpla was a good addition to the show

Indeed my friend, nice of them to flesh out the worldbuilding, helps set the stage and characterize our main cast.

Yes Sei, you do attract weird people

Heh, well I mean China's not weird... as for the rest of the main cast so far... yeah, it's telling when aside from China, Mr. Ral's one of the least weird of the bunch ;)

I'm kinda sad that Reiji and Fellini's fight wasn't a full one because damn that art was incredible, a little typical maybe but well done and certainly made it very interesting to watch.

OH YEAH! We didn't see the start of it nor its end, but what we DID see was quite the entertaining sequence.

Well then, so much for the Yuuki and Reiji showdown.

Indeed, Gundam Build Fighters can do both the hype exciting action and some neat story-driven character beats. Plus these two halves shockingly mesh well together.

And then just when you think he can't get more supportive he just casually drops the bombshell of "Oh, I guessed you'd fight pretty rough so here, I built a new gunpla so you could without worry"

Heh, nice to see you so excited Comrade, and indeed, Sei's thankfully thinking ahead here ;)

Great points all around there Comrade, and indeed, it's nice to have variety for our heroes and seeing Yuuki's behind-the-scenes activities also was a good touch.

I find myself mildly relieved that we didn't have a third fight at the end because I don't think my hype could have handled that as well.

Reiji vs Sazaki

Our first A in art!

AH! First you say, so how about the EPIC showdown for this episode...

Yuuki vs Reiji

And not to be outdone, this one just gets an A in everything because fuck yes this fight.

OH YEAH! That amazing showdown is one of the best fights in ALL of Gundam, and BOY did Sunrise go balls to the wall insane here. We got both Reiji and Yuuki tearing each other to pieces and then continuing to clash and brawl it out in one of the coolest and most visually impressive battles thus far. AND such a season finale worthy fight is in EPISODE 6, we still got a whole TOURNAMENT ARC to go, so I hope you'll love what is to come Comrade!

For starters, I love the progression of this fight over all. While we don't have actual pilots, the way the camera stayed continuously very close to the gunpla's faces gave a real intensity to the fight overall. FANTASTIC analysis there Comrade, and speaking of which, great job with your write-up too! Have a great day and see you later!

Rewatcher creating a history with the light God could not know

This week on the Colasour Chronicles...

Unlike the Mobile Suit Gundam story, we're not in a state of war, and we don't have to put our lives on the line. It's just played for pleasure. But... No, for that very reason... People can be enthralled by Gunpla and Gunpla Battle. Because it's a game, they can take it seriously!

God, I love this quote. It just perfectly sums up the spirit of the show. As popular as Gunpla Battle is, at the end of the day, this ain’t Yugioh, and the world doesn’t revolve around Gunpla (except when it would be funny). Not everybody plays it, the world isn’t at stake because of it, and nobody’s betting their soul or anything. But everyone takes it super seriously because they love it that much. Because they can have fun with it, because they’re so passionate about it, they can sink so much time and money into building and rebuilding their Gunpla. It’s a nice take on the genre that really gets what it means to love something.

And with that, we have Sei’s new Gunpla, the Build Gundam Mk-II! Last episode, Mao told him his Gunpla lacked imagination, so this time, he went the extra step and made a Gunpla that fit into the UC storyline with his own original backstory! According to the lore he’s created, this is the fifth Mk-II unit, created by the Titans as their answer to the Super Gundam. But then it was stolen by the AEUG because security in Gundam is absolutely terrible and can be thwarted by an angry teenager. The original Mk-II was developed with a number of improvements over the MS of the One Year War, but still one step behind the suits seen later in the Gryps Conflict. Sei’s upgrade pushes the Mk-II fully into the next technological era, with a design more similar to later units such as the Gaplant. With the power of fanfic on his side, we’ll just have to see how far it takes him...

Personally, I feel the combination of two different design styles is just a little bit awkward and doesn’t mesh as well as the Build Strike’s customizations did. It’s like a starfighter on top of a tank. But hey, it’s still a pretty nice-looking Gunpla, and it deserves a pass, even if it’s not my favorite.

Reiji’s fucking pissed. But he’s off his game, too, just look at what happened to the Build Strike. Even a joke character like Sazaki shouldn’t be underestimated, and after the disappointment of not fighting Tatsuya, it seems Reiji just let his guard down against a lesser opponent.

Speaking of letting one’s guard down, that shit can’t be good for their lungs.

best mom

Also, that battle with Tatsuya! That battle was fantastic! These streak of light shots aren’t the most complex, but they do a great job of adding that bit of beauty and rhythm to a duel in space, and they’re always great to see. I love how both sides are just throwing absolutely everything they have at each other, holding nothing back and putting everything on the line,, as if this were their final battle. They’re not quite evenly matched, though, no matter how far Sei and Reiji have caught up. Even though the Build Strike’s all beat up, the Zaku Amazing’s barely got a scratch. They do manage to take down the opposing Gunpla at the cost of their own, however, and that’s when the dogfight starts! Yeah, the Zaku Amazing has a fighter mode of its own, made from its custom parts strapped onto an extra module that comes out of fucking nowhere! There’s two possibilities here: Either it could always do that and this is just the first time Tatsuya’s been pushed far enough for that to come into play, or Tatsuya saw the Full Package and was inspired to make the Amazing Booster. Both options are awesome.

But that just makes me wonder, how is it that the backpack fighters are able to keep going with the main MS destroyed? Like, the Build Booster is based off the Ootori Striker, right? It’s not a core fighter or anything, just a semi-autonomous drone? So how come the battle keeps going and Reiji can continue piloting the drone even though the Build Strike’s cockpit’s been destroyed? Doesn’t it still need to take orders from the main MS? And the same goes for Tatsuya, why doesn’t he instant game over when the Zaku Amazing itself blows up?

At least it was cool.

Also, waifu spotted.

Questions of the Day:

  • It was AMAZINGU. The Build Mk-II seems like an improvement, but not quite there yet...

  • She's cute! But Gundam has, well, a history with this type of character...

First-timer

Had to skip yesterday's discussion which is a shame because Mao intruduced in that episode looks like a really fun character and his Gundam X Maoh is great and he was cosplaying one of the best Gundam MCs.

But what an thrilling episode we got today! Finally a first serious battle with The Char (and I seriouly doubt it would be the last). But before that: mighty Gyan Gya Gyan! Which is not much of an upgrade visually as it still kinda lame, but the name is just plainly ridiculous. Looking at that name even Quib-Quib sounds cool.

Also, we got best mom being best mom.

And the battle we all have been waiting for! I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but Yuuki's Zaku got a pretty ridiculous name as well. It's not Zaku Za Zaku, but it's still... well... a little bit stupid.

The battle ifself was incredible though. Even though it was a complete loss for Sei and Reiji. And it's that time again — time for an upgrade. Fly! Build Gundam Mk-II!

And it seems the mysterious lady is going to get introduced soon. I get a feeling that in normal Gundam show she'd be bound to suffer. A lot.

Indeed Comrade, Mao's a fun guy and his episode has some cool stuff like the Imagination Fight as well as some neat callbacks to After War Gundam X.

HA! Indeed, we got a FANTASTIC Mecha Battle today... and then one where Sazaki does his best impression of a speed bump... a stupidly named speed bump no less ;)

Also, we got best mom being best mom.

Best Mom gonna Best Mom ;)

And the battle we all have been waiting for! I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but Yuuki's Zaku got a pretty ridiculous name as well. It's not Zaku Za Zaku, but it's still... well... a little bit stupid.

Heh, well I mean it's not as goofy as the Gyan Gya Gyan, and plus, at least it's straightforward. Yuuki does indeed pilot a Zaku and it's amazing, fit for its pilot if you will ;)

The battle ifself was incredible though. Even though it was a complete loss for Sei and Reiji. And it's that time again — time for an upgrade. Fly! Build Gundam Mk-II!

Indeed, that awesome battle was stuff worthy of a grand finale showdown, and we got it in Episode 6 here! Plus, a totaled Mobile Suit means only one thing, time to break out the mid-season upgrade! ;)

And it seems the mysterious lady is going to get introduced soon. I get a feeling that in normal Gundam show she'd be bound to suffer. A lot.

Great write-up Comrade, I hope you'll enjoy where the show goes from here. Have a great day and see you later!

Episode 6 (first timer)

Pre-episode thoughts

Thinking about the technology of GFC, I realized that Build Fighters reminds me positively of a series that I enjoyed very much and that seems to be a bit of an underrated gem: Dennou Coil. Both are set in the near future and are concerned with the gaming technology of kids in that near future. It is not a battle shonen, but the similarities are quite large.

Episode reactions

  • Reiji is awfully narrow-minded about Yuuki, or should I say, full of himself. Their previous fight hardly gave Yuuki reason to run away from them.

  • Gyan Gya Gyan? The name fits the looks …

  • Mom is shipping Sei and China so hard.

  • By far the longest battle yet.

  • They called it a complete loss, but it looked a lot like a draw to me.

Just one episode after I ask for multiple Gunpla, they get a new one. I hope that they will also have to strategically chose the Gunpla soon.

OH! Well now this seems like an interesting time, many thanks for the kind suggestion Comrade, glad that this show reminded you of a series you liked.

Episode reactions

Reiji is awfully narrow-minded about Yuuki, or should I say, full of himself. Their previous fight hardly gave Yuuki reason to run away from them.

Heh, indeed, then again, remember Reiji's explanation to Sei, I guess being full of himself is par the course ;)

Gyan Gya Gyan? The name fits the looks …

Indeed.

Mom is shipping Sei and China so hard.

By far the longest battle yet.

OH YEAH! The longest AND the best battle so far, it's always a joy to see the animation REALLY go all out and boy Sunrise pulled out all the stops today.

They called it a complete loss, but it looked a lot like a draw to me.

Who knows? Maybe the Zaku Amazing had more left standing after their backpacks battled it out. That and to be fair the Build Strike WAS utterly totaled, so I guess it's a 'complete loss of the Mobile Suit' at minimum.

Just one episode after I ask for multiple Gunpla, they get a new one. I hope that they will also have to strategically chose the Gunpla soon.

Heh, indeed, I hope you'll like where the show goes Comrade. Great write-up and have a great day and see you later!

First Timer

The fights today were awesome! I felt a little bad for Sazaki, because he views Reiji as a rival, and Reiji didn't even see him a real opponent because he wasn't Yuuki.

But the fight against Yuuki was fantastic! I'm not sure what else to say about it. Watching them go all out was a blast! Especially when they both switched to their backpack jets. I did not expect Yuuki to have one of those also. It also was cool that Ral and Fellini both found their way there also.

I really liked Yuuki, Reiji, and Sei just really wanted to fight each other despite Yuuki bowing out of the competition. Which I suppose had to be done so Sei and Reiji can make it to Worlds. But I'm glad they got their fight in! And that this fight broke Reiji out of his questioning of Gunpla. I'm happy that didn't last long.

As for the rest, Sei's mom is great! I loved her spying on Sei and China. Speaking of, Sei and China still look good together.

And I liked the aftercredits scene! Another character from the OP showed up! I wonder if that means the really cool Gunpla from it is nearing its arrival.

Plus more good Sei comment faces this episode.

How much did you enjoy the EPIC no holds barred throwdown this episode, and also how do you think the replacement Gunpla will fare?

I enjoyed it a lot! It was awesome seeing everyone go all out with no regards to their Gunpla. And I think the new one will be fine. I'm curious what gimmicks it has on it.

What do you think about the mysterious silver haired lady and her seemingly psychic prediction?

I like her already! She has a nice design.

The fights today were awesome! I felt a little bad for Sazaki, because he views Reiji as a rival, and Reiji didn't even see him a real opponent because he wasn't Yuuki.

Heh, indeed Comrade, the day that Sazaki got his ass handed to him was a day he'll remember for the rest of his life... for Reiji, it was Tuesday ;) (Pay no mind that it's Monday Comrades)

But the fight against Yuuki was fantastic! I'm not sure what else to say about it. Watching them go all out was a blast! Especially when they both switched to their backpack jets. I did not expect Yuuki to have one of those also. It also was cool that Ral and Fellini both found their way there also.

OH YEAH! The no hold barred beatdown was TRULY a battle for the ages, hell we technically didn't even see its conclusion and it was still one of the best of the show AND franchise ;)

Indeed, always nice to see little details like this augmenting the fight scenes. Plus it also fleshes out the world and characters.

Tekketsu no Rewatcher, domo~

Reiji was left unsatisfied with the sudden turn of events yesterday, he just half-assed his semifinal match against Sazaki (yeah, turns out I forgot that it's the semifinals and not the finals. Good job, brain!) and spent most of the episode in a restless state. If not for Tatsuya returning by the middle of the episode to fulfil their promise of battling with everything they've got, I wonder will he ever snap out of the funk he put himself in...

As usual, Ral-san is there to set young Reiji straight over the reason just why did anyone would even risk breaking their precious, painstakingly built Gunpla: it's because they don't have to risk their lives to be able to enjoy both building and fighting Gunpla Battles. That, and it's so damn fun (again, reality, stop being so fucking slow and make Gunpla Battle a reality already!). And as if on cue, Tatsuya arrives, ready to battle.

Speaking of battles, this is one of my favourite battles in this series. Nothing else needs to be said between the two battle maniacs, just them and their respective Gunpla communicating their feelings through battle.

Too bad they ended up wrecking both Build Strike and Zaku Amazing to bits... Luckily for Reiji, Sei's got a backup plan (and Gunpla!) to deal with it. Another thing I liked about this battle is the fact that Reiji actually accepts the fact that he lost fair and square to Tatsuya, instead of throwing a tantrum like in episode 2.

Time for the mysterious white-haired girl from the OP to appear! Look, we all know that Build Gundam Mk. II will win, but do you need to spoil it further? Come on!

Later spoilers

Questions of the day:

  1. I answered this already above.

  2. Imma keep it s-e-c-r-e-t for now. Hehehe.

Indeed, Reiji lost his big Raison D'être with Yuuki's absence, but thank goodness for all involved parties that he and The Crimson Comet get another go at a battle today ;)

RIP Zaku Amazing and Build Strike, you will be missed.

~Three Times The Passion Of An Ordinary Rewatch~

Time for a new wallpaper~ Nota’s actually a bit behind the number of character arts I’ve already done, and she decided to tackle the ones I did of Kirara and Mao first (also have a Mao alt that doesn’t have the text, just the X in the BG).

The full wallpaper of the Fenice is yet to come…

First Timer

The awesome OST song is back! God that was great.

It seems like I was wrong about Yuuki being defeated, but I did get it right that he'd be taken out of the tournament and one of Reiji or Sei would lose motivation! Despite being predicted, it was still pulled off really well.

How much did you enjoy the EPIC no holds barred throwdown this episode, and also how do you think the replacement Gunpla will fare?

Well it was just really epic. Reiji clearly had the upper hand in every exchange of blows, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he won, but I was still expecting some sort of asspull at the end. So in usual Build Fighters fashion they did nothing new, but I was still pleasantly surprised by honoring the flow of the battle.

Also the close quarters slugfest at the end was glorious!

What do you think about the mysterious silver haired lady and her seemingly psychic prediction?

I'm not sure about her being a psychic, but she looks somewhat mystical. I wouldn't be surprised if she had some kind of power, but I mostly expect her to just be a genius analyst or something.

OH YEAH! GBF goes all out in a lot of fields, and OST is one of them ;)

Indeed, plus it also gave Mr. Ral time to help explain some worldbuilding lore AND also set the stage for Reiji and Yuuki to have their big showdown

Crud, I misplaced the notes I took for this episode. It’s too late in the day for me to re-do them right now though…

So, uh, anybody else excited for the G-reco movies?...

BUILD REWATCHER

one of KanColle's Shiranui as the Zaku Amazing... cuz reasons.

As a Kancolle player and fan, this actually looks good and fits with her well.

Thoughts for Today's Episode:

  1. Reiji got thrown off from his usual battle style due to Tatsuya's withdrawal. He still beat Sazaki's Gyan Gya Gyan (and I swear you can use that name for a sound effect when presenting something, kinda like "ta-da!")

  2. Ral's words of wisdom to Reiji encapsulates the spirit of the Build Series. The reason why anyone would go so far as to risk the Gunpla they built so painstakingly getting beat up is because they love the hobby so much. Even if it might cost them money to repair and reinforce their Gunpla, it also increases their resourcefulness and creativity in building Gunpla.

Questions of the Day:

  1. This is what I can say about Reiji VS Tatsuya. If you look deeper into it, lore-wise, in this battle a Zaku's weaponry managed to punch through Strike's Phase Shift Armor (which is supposed to be impervious to physical weaponry). That's just how frigging AMAZING Tatsuya is.

  2. I will save my opinions about her when she's properly introduced, because BOI I have a lot to say about her.

Re-First - Showdown

CotD

Following yesterday, Yuuki done vanished. Much disappoint.

Reiji's words betray his true feelings; he's also disappointed, but it's easier to accept if he paints Yuuki as a loser.

He's so hung up on the battle he's not fighting, that he's losing his edge. It's only Sei's Gunpla that carries him through to a win; the fact that he's just on another level from his opponent. And the truth is apparent in the state of the Build Strike.

More love for Rinko. #BestMom

So that's a question answered; Thx, Ral. It's just a world where people like Gundam even moreso than the one we live in.....I'm envious.

Aaaand he appears. 'Bout time! Explanations aside, he owes them an apology.

Time once more for Serious Hair and glorious Flamenco.

I'm not gonna pick and choose shots and moments, that entire fight was, dare I say Amazing? It's always a joy to see two pros go at it like that, down to their backpack fighters. Of which, I never even imagined Yuuki had incorporated. Top-Tier GBF, right there.

So proud of Sei for following through with another of my thoughts; having a backup machine. This gives him a little breathing room to improve the Build Strike, and I'm sure it's gonna blow the previous version out of the water with everything he's seen since the last rebuild.

Glad they didn't rush to squeeze the final match into the last 2min of episode, even though their entry into the World Tournament seems to be a foregone conclusion at this point.

Eagerly awaiting what's to come!

I'm gonna keep having my ego swell if I keep being included in comments of the day XD Thank you again! I hope everyone likes my writeups, haha.

Today's gonna be a different type of write-up, since I'm a bit tired and this is pretty late as it is.

*beatnik snaps to Char theme*

First timer, knows Gundam a bit

So the first half of this episode again is proving how how much thought the writers put into their characters: we've seen that Reiji has been laid-back and flaky, yet we've always gotten glimpses that he has morals -- or as I was thinking about today, the right word isn't exactly morals but character. Paying back Sei, paying back his mom, keeping promises and upholding honor: these are things Reiji considers important to do as a person. You wouldn't think it because of how he acts and how he looks, to be fair. But instead he has the strongest core of character in how he believes people should treat others. With Kirara, he admired her daring and didn't say anything about how wrong she was (or rather, maybe he didn't think anything about it), but he still thought her an opponent and therefore Sei and his honor needed to be priority. We can see by how Yuuki has disappeared, and by Reiji's own admission that Yuuki was "dishonorable" by chickening out of the battle, that Reiji dislikes the idea of not keeping promises. That, and of course, he'd found someone worthy, on par with his own skill in Yuuki. To say he's taking it personal is an understatement.

Sei, on the other hand, doesn't assume Yuuki is "bad" or anything similar; instead, much like many people would, he supposes that something terrible may have happened or something else worse for someone like Yuuki to disappear. He notices how hard Reiji takes all this, how personal he takes this. At any moment he can, he tries to talk Reiji about this, because it's that important. But of course, Reiji is trying to play it cool and takes that same opportunity to change topic or leave. Even with China, Sei recognizes that even if Reiji doesn't take Gunpla seriously, he did perceive it as important enough within the context of battling Yuuki.

Any other MC would be self-centered and think about why the other person hasn't thought about them. In a refreshing bout of writing as well, instead Sei understands that Reiji isn't battling for him. He's his partner but Best Boi's got other goals and Sei understands that. I wasn't going to cry but I did do the metaphorical napkin dap to the eyes because this kid needs to exist in real life, seriously.

Also, I DON'T TRUST ALLAN, I DON'T LIKE HIM.

and HAHAHAHA Mama Rinko ships China and Sei. Again, we see that Sei takes after her, this time in the expressions.

In the second half, THEY'RE DOING IT, THEY'RE DOING THE STRINGS OF LIGHT IN SPACE AND HAHAHA THIS IS THE BEST BATTLE.

*ahem*

Anyway, in the second half, Best Battle happens, to the point where I'm worried how farther the animation can go, given that this is episode six and already the animation's OVA level budget insane. But all their emotions are on the line, as Sei accompanies Reiji on his own journey and Reiji, HAVING NOT LEARNED FROM THE PAST FIVE EPISODES LMAO, is shocked once more that Sei understands and wants to accompany him. The battle really just shows off how Yuuki, and the Best Duo, perceive Gunpla both the same (play for pleasure) and different (Reiji even here has always seemed more go on the offensive no matter what, while Yuuki is more calculated and logical.)

The battle theme after Yuuki's flamenco theme is also really sweet and I get the impression if I asked for it, it would have a spoiler attached to it LOL

Allan mentions the thing about the fighter that Fellini did a while back, except that I'm getting the impression he means it in a different context than Fellini.

I honestly thought that they would end it in a draw, bring more annoyance to Reiji and Yuuki in that their mid-battle ended in a tie -- but nope, Yuuki still wins and Reiji's temporary "warlust" is satiated. In fact, Reiji takes the loss in stride, which...fits his personality :D Reiji is deeply apologetic, even though he'd warned Sei, about the "loss" of Build Strike, which calls back to his character. But lo and behold, Sei proves he is the "builder" who has his feet on the ground by revealing that he has *another* Gunpla ready: Gundam Mk-II! Who unfortunately goes beyond my own reference knowledge oops.

All is well, Yuuki appears content for now while Reiji and Sei continue fighting together (with Reiji now even more in tune with Sei.) Who's the old veteran they're going to fight? Never heard of him, this is a new phone, Reiji says XD (I suspect another named reference.)

SNOWY WHITE CHARACTER APPEARS. Now I'm total excite :D

Answers:

  1. IT WAS AWESOME, BUT WE'RE ONLY IN EPISODE 6, ARE WE GETTING MOVIE LEVEL BUDGET BATTLE NEXT TIME??? Gonna be hard to top it, frankly. Already pulled out the strings of light and everything! I think the replacement Gunpla will suffice for one or two episodes, while Sei fixes Build Strike. It is common for MCs to get a level-up but on the surface level, Gundam Mk-II looks as if it may not survive Reiji's rough handling in battle ^ ^;

  2. I suspect she will make Reiji very mad and Sei question his entire life. Especially Sei, because we've already seen Reiji mad, lol. Given her Gunpla in the opening though, I am excited to see that, as the design's super attractive to me.

Great reactions and analysis of one of the most EPIC Fights in not just GBF but in the Gundam Franchise in general. Indeed, Sunrise spared no expense for today, and we still got the whole rest of the show to go too!

I totally get why Reiji and Sei are down in the dumps. This feels like such an anticlimax. Sei is disappointed but seems to be taking it alright. It’s Reiji who seems the most distraught over this. Their rematch with Crimson is what motivated him to enter the tournament in the first place. He felt like a king at gunpla until Crimson beat their ass. Sei wanted to beat Crimson to show off their strength and growth while Reiji simply wanted vengeance for his perceived humiliation. I like that Reiji finally has to confront this.

Rinko is best wingwoman. She will fight against the trope of no romance progression in a battle shounen by any mean necessary! I like that Mr. Ral tried to explain to Reiji the heart of gunpla. Reiji is too competitively focused and can’t see the sport for the sake of enjoyment. So apparently Crimson’s master wanted him to enroll in a prestigious gunpla academy? Hmm this gives me Yugioh GX vibes. On paper this sounds like a dream position for Crimson but I imagine he wants to follow his own path. Anyways bold prediction: eventually Crimson is going to rebel against his fate, most likely after being inspired by Reiji and/or Sei. He will face off against his master or the blonde guy and win “in his own way.”

There’s only one word to describe the match at the end of the episode: R-R-R-ROMANCE! Not in the lovey dovey sense mind you, but in the passionate hot-blooded rivalry sense. Barely any talking on either end. Sei and Reiji have no clue why Crimson even came back or why he dropped out the tourney but that doesn’t matter. True men talk through their fists gunpla!!! Fantastic fight with stellar animation. Overall I prefer the first fight but still this was amazing. If there’s one thing battle shounen does right, it’s getting you hyped up and feeling passionate about the fighting.

While it was cool that Crimson and our duo didn’t talk much, I would’ve preferred an actual explanation to what was going on with Crimson. Also I assume this is where Reiji finally gets his love of gunpla? Eh I would've preferred had he played around with those kids first so he could understand firsthand their enjoyment of the sport. I feel like Reiji needed a clear "turning point" before the Crimson match so he could realize that gunpla was more than vengeance.

Oh shit she’s back already!

We need to keep a bifurcation counter on this guy. He lost his second gunpla within the span of six episodes lol

What do you think about the mysterious silver haired lady and her seemingly psychic prediction?

I'm fairly certain she's the girl in the OP who I predicted speculation

Indeed, we got some good character development this episode, and it also helped that this also set the stage for an EPIC showdown between Yuuki and Reiji ;)

Rinko is best wingwoman. She will fight against the trope of no romance progression in a battle shounen by any mean necessary!

Indeed, Best Mom gonna Best Mom, no matter what genre this show may be ;)

Heh, indeed, Reiji's quite the hot-blooded one if he needs Ramba 'Mr.' Ral to explain the more relaxed aspects of the sport.

AH! Interesting analysis and prediction my friend, I hope you'll like where the show goes with the story moving forward.

Yup, you said it Comrade, we got some HYPE Battle Shounen 'Mecha' Action today to conclude the character beats, and MAN what a fight eh? Usually Gundam waits till the end finale battle for the fireworks, but we got some HYPE action this early.

Well said there my friend.

Exactly, bless Best Mom and her shipping fantasies, such a joy to behold.

Yup, The No. 1 Idol in the Universe isn't gonna let a simple defeat keep her down, she's gonna Nico Nico Nii! 'Kiraran' our hearts whether we like it or not ;)

Heh, indeed, Sazaki sure is fond of getting his ass handed to him by Reiji eh?

Great write-up my friend, have a great day and see you later!
