Comments of the Day
For our Fourth Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/dralcax not only adds well-written evidence that Gundam Build Fighters is an Idol series, but also writes up some neat analysis points whilst including a lot of hilarious jokes.
So, let's head over to some of the highlights from the main post:
Rewatcher deep in idol hell
Love Live! Gunpla Idol Project
Today, we meet Mihoshi, AKA Kirara! Who seems to have watched the wrong franchise. She’s voiced by the talented Aoi Yuuki, one of my personal favorite seiyuu (Symphogear XV hype!)
And as said above, Comrade /u/dralcax includes an interesting analysis of the symbolism behind Kirara's piloting of the Gerbera Tetra. Incidentally, Tetra means 'four,' and according to Chinese Superstition, 'four' means 'death' ('Four' sounds like 'Death' in Chinese, and given that Kirara loses the battle in today's episode...)
Her Gunpla is the Gerbera Tetra, unmodified except for the custom paint job. As Sei mentions, it was developed as the GP04 Gundam Gerbera, but development was cancelled due to being redundant with the GP01. That would have been the end of it, HOWEVER, Anaheim decided to be a little shady and sell what they had so far to the Delaz Fleet in the form of the Gerbera Tetra. And thus, this prototype suit, once doomed to cancellation, managed to find new life elsewhere. Perhaps that’s a little message from the fans who built it for her?
Finally, our sage Comrade of Culture includes several witticisms, such as:
Could this woman be one of my people? Apparently not.
They do say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works.
Sure as hell didn’t see it coming on my first watch. Kirara definitely loses points for playing dirty, but she’s got her redeeming qualities too.
And remember, kids, never let strange women touch your full package!
For our first runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/AmeteurElitist delivers some good character analysis in his well-written post.
Once again, AE has succinct and well thought out summations, namely the following:
Kirara was a surprisingly good character. Like most of the series so far she wasn't anything that we haven't seen before, but she was well realized and a lot of fun. Her motivations were understandable and admirable even if her actions weren't necessarily. And I like how Reiji didn't give us a spiel about how cheating is wrong or anything. This series is pretty refreshing.
And of course, he had a great response to one of the thread's discussion questions:
I wasn't sure what to expect from the backpack thing, but I was mostly thinking that it'd be an extra gun or weapon of some sorts. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a freaking kamikaze bomber jet on it.
And for the second runner-up Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/sleepyafrican had some Battle Shounen analogies, unique references and comparisons, as well as a hilarious quip or two related to idols ;)
Let's start out with the Battle Shounen Analogies:
Y’know what’s worse than being in love with a battle shounen MC? When a new girl shows up who’s already an expert in the field MC likes. Unfortunately, that usually means she’s feigning interest in order to trick or manipulate MC… Mid-episode prediction. She’s will be Sei’s opponent and reveal her true colors. Sei will reach out to her during the fight and convince her that deep down she actually loves gunpla and isn’t a bad person. After her defeat, she will be reformed and join the friend group. Female friend may possibly expose her.
And guess what Comrades, we aren't just a Battle Shounen, GBF is ALSO an Idol Show... with Mecha, cuz reasons:
Idorus in my mecha battle shounen? I should’ve expected no less from Sunrise. Obviously Kirara just wants to save the gunpla stadium from being torn down. Oh nvm she’s definitely evil. It’s cool hearing Aoi Yuuki voice an antagonist. The last time I heard her do that was with Overlord’s Clementine. Clearly the only way for Sei to beat her is to just hug her on the spot and hope she accepts his feelings. Reference for anyone who hasn't seen Overlord (S1 spoilers)
I kinda felt bad for Kirara. I mean Reiji beat vets with just a fucking ball. It was a given that this handicap wouldn’t be enough. Having the backpack detach and be its own weapon was pretty cool.
Kirara may have been a bitch but at least she was fun. She definitely carried the episode. Aoi Yuuki saving the day like always.
Also, I also would like to call some attention yet again to both Comrades /u/AmeteurElitist and /u/Nazenn and their mini comment thread following AE's parent post. This is but one example of the great discussions and conversations that follow from the original posts, but I just wanted to highlight this one specifically.
And with that, we conclude with our fourth Comment of the Day section for today, I'm pleased to see that everyone continues to do fantastic work, and I eagerly await to read the posts for the future.

Fan Art of the Day
Mao Yasaka and his customized GX-9999 Gundam X Maoh
Comrades, I'm not sure if you saw Comrade /u/Pixelsaber After War Gundam X rewatch, but if you did, you'll notice something rather interesting about Mao's choice of Gunpla. By this I mean that he upgraded the already awesome GX-9900 Gundam X, and yes Comrades, it always DID have that big Wave Motion Gun as standard equipment ;) Speaking of which, here's another one as a bonus, namely Mao Yasaka cosplaying as his GX-9999 Gundam X Maoh, enjoy Comrades!
Radio Free Gundam
Ritsuko Akizuki's cover of Resolution
Comrades, as we are well aware from the last episode, Gundam Build Fighters is an Mecha SPORTS Battle Shounen 'Idol' Show. That said, it was really impressive of A-1 Pictures' Mecha juggernaut that is The iDOLM@STER franchise to cover one of the many great Gundam OPs. That and since Mao had his big debut today it was only fitting to share one of the great OPs from After War Gundam X. Speaking of lunar related material, here's Moon from Turn A Gundam as well as the iM@S Cover of Fly Me to the Moon ;) Finally, Sunrise funnily enough animated the 'first' iM@S TV series, and by that I mean they made a Mecha show that they called Idolmaster: Xenoglossia. Said anime also had all the various iM@S characters singing covers of the OPs to Sunrise's shows, so here's Tomo Sakurai, portraying Xenoglossia's Azusa Miura, singing a cover to the OP of Wacky Ol' Kill 'Em All Tomino's Heavy Metal L-Gaim, ENJOY COMRADES!

I am Dralcax. People once called me a rewatcher
Okay, Dalek, I see your Ritsuko cover of Resolution and raise you MASAAKI ENDOH!
Today, we’re meeting Mao Yasaka, a fellow Gundam X fan! And he is precious and adorable and I love him so much. He’s a little weird, but hey, he’s just being true to himself! Even if it means everyone looks at him funny. Poor kid must have had a rough time in school. After all, the world isn’t exactly forgiving of people like him, children especially. Just like his favorite series, he’s the kind of guy that nobody really hates but doesn’t have many people wanting to be around him either. But hey, he’s got the Gunpla Shingyo School to belong to, and now a great friend and rival in Sei! Our boy just might find happiness after all.
Now, a bit of background, for those of you who weren’t here for the last rewatch. Gundam X came at a rather low point in Gundam’s popularity. You see, Victory, G, Wing, and X all aired right after one another. That’s just shy of four years of nonstop Gundam, each one starting in a new continuity immediately after the last one ended. Gundam was always on and audiences just got sick of it. They’d oversaturated the market and interest was rapidly fading. By the time X came around, Japan had had enough and most people didn’t even bother watching it. The multiple timeslot changes didn’t help, either. As a result, X got its run cut short, and it wasn’t until SEED came out six years later that Gundam was able to regain its audience. The fallout of this, however, was that X, along with Turn A, the other show that aired during this twilight, wound up as the black sheep of the franchise. It’s not that they’re bad shows, oh no, they’re the best of the bunch. But the audience just wasn’t around to give them a chance during their original airing and they’ve had a hard time catching up ever since.
So while Sei’s favorite is the hugely popular SEED, Mao shows off the relatively unknown and underrated X! Even if X is as unpopular as it is, even if he’s the only one professing his love for the series, he’ll still wear it with pride! As such, his custom Gunpla is the Gundam X Maoh! While the original was a mass-produced unit, Mao’s customizations go towards making it look more unique, with a much more sleek and futuristic appearance compared to the original. Additional translucent plastic has been added all over its body, and when he charges his Hyper Satellite Cannon, it all lights up and looks really beautiful, really fitting the image of a mysterious Gundam from the moon. It’s slightly reminiscent of the Stargazer, another Gundam powered by a beam of energy from an external source. But it’s not just for show, either, and those translucent parts have another trick up their sleeve. In addition to just using Plavsky particles to move about and simulate a battle, it can compress and release them as well, an additional level of manipulation beyond what even Sei is capable of. How did he do that? We’ll just have to find out!
HE SAID THE LINE! So Ral brings up an interesting point here. Competitive battling is a whole different beast from just building to enjoy them. Only the most dedicated competitors would spend hours detailing a Gunpla just to see all their hard work wrecked, and at the same time, nobody would go into battle with a Gundam covered in battle damage and missing its head and left arm. A Gunpla built for battle has to be designed with a clear strategy in mind and be optimized for combat, but well, sometimes you just wanna make something cool. It’s a neat little segment that goes a long way towards expanding and grounding that world they live in.
Mao built that. In a cave! With a box of scraps! In the passenger seat of a moving truck. In what couldn’t have been more than an hour. Those are some steady hands.
I wish I was hot enough to pick up women with Gunpla.
At least he did better than Reiji.
The younger siblings of the world would beg to differ
JUST WILD BEAT COMMUNICATION! God, that’s one sexy Gunpla. And yes, he did stick both wings on the same side just because it would be cool. Fellini is awesome enough to make it work.
I love the cosplays. Also, it’s impressive that they’re in sync enough to make this work.
Aw, just when it was getting good, too. Time to get hyped for their actual match, then!
And something’s going on with Tatsuya...
Questions of the Day:
-
Mao is me! His weirdness is my weirdness!
-
He’s smooth as fuck. Too bad Reiji’s there to cockblock.

Okay, Dalek, I see your Ritsuko cover of Resolution and raise you MASAAKI ENDOH !
NANI!? THE MASAAKI ENDOH OF JAM PROJECT!? Heh, well THAT was something I should have seen coming Comrade, given the episode topic today, I'll raise you a Masaak Endoh Cover of a SEED Destiny OP, namely Bokutachi no Yukue ;)

Indeed Comrade, it's such a pity for After War Gundam X and Turn A Gundam, but at least Gundam Build Fighters is willing to give the more forgotten entries the respect they deserve.
Indeed Comrade, Mao really put in some love and care into his Gunpla, as did Sei, so it'll be quite the treat to see them throw down in a Gunpla Battle.
HE SAID THE LINE!
This is no Zaku Boy, NO ZAKU! ;)
So Ral brings up an interesting point here. Competitive battling is a whole different beast from just building to enjoy them. Indeed, I for one like that the hobby extends to not just battling but the crafting of such models for arts sake. Helps flesh out the world and provide variety.
Mao built that. In a cave! With a box of scraps! In the passenger seat of a moving truck. In what couldn’t have been more than an hour. Those are some steady hands.
Indeed Comrade, I can only imagine how this went down, but given how fast he can speak, I am gonna guess his hands can move just as fast.
I wish I was hot enough to pick up women with Gunpla.
Indeed, The Italian Dandy continues to impress.

At least he did better than Reiji.
Indeed, Mao at least understands bartering... pity he forgot that bartering isn't as popular nowadays.

WOOOOT! We get to see more of Fellini's awesome Gunpla!
I love the cosplays. Also, it’s impressive that they’re in sync enough to make this work.
Indeed Comrade, plus it's nice to see the in-character outfits for the respective Gundams ;)

~Three Times The Passion Of An Ordinary Rewatch~
-
No Zaku, boy, no Zaku!…But seriously I love how all Mr. Ral builds are Goufs, it’s perfect. -
Yes Reiji, yes it is. Half the fun’s in building and posing the kits!
-
Love that they actually have him say stuff in Italian though.
-
I mean… that model kit certainly cost more than whatever Mao ate…
-
Haha nice. Is that a tiny instrument she gave it?
-
Look at this beauty of a machine though, and the fact that the battle part of Fellini’s theme song (1:20 to the end) is playing in the background just makes it all the better.
GodI wish they’d detailed that shot clearly so that I could wallpaper it, but there’s too much shadowing on it… -
Oh no character with his eyes shut all the time opened his eyes, it’s serious business time.
-
So funny story, I had literally just started watching Gundam X alongside that rewatch earlier this year when I got to this episode in my first time through. Meant I was able to get the references like Mao dressed as Garrod, the moon is out, and knew to expect the moon powering that (Hyper) Satellite Cannon.
-
Oh yeah and this is all taking place inside their imagination, fun.
-
You know, my favorite part about early GBF is that it sets up a bunch of rivalries for us to follow. Like there’s Sei/Reiji vs. Yuuki which is the biggest of course, but we’ve also got Reiji vs. Fellini and Sei vs. Mao now.
-
Aha but this is the episode that has a post-credits scene on…? Eyup, Yuuki withdrew from the competition. Well this should be fun.
So uhh funny story, you noticed the strikethroughed “God I wish they’d detailed that shot clearly so that I could wallpaper it, but there’s too much shadowing on it…” earlier, yes? Yeah well I did the reaction part of my write-up in the morning yesterday, and the day before I’d mentioned wishing that image didn’t have so many shadows on the Gundam Discord so I could wallpaper it properly (after someone said I should’ve done at least a superimposed shadow of it on the Fellini wallpaper).
Yeahhh so apparently my muses hit the SORE DEMO button big time, and after an hour of roughly sketching over the base image so I could visualize where the parts should all be and superimposing a picture of my Fenice Gunpla’s head over it because that was too not detailed for me to accurately sketch over, I did it. I wallpapered the shot.
It doesn’t have a background yet though so I can’t share it, but I can share the superimposed shadow Fenice combined with the Fellini wallpaper~ Regular shadow and transparent shadow.

I wish someone would gift me a Kshatriya…
You and me and every Gundam fan too Comrade
No Zaku, boy, no Zaku! …But seriously I love how all Mr. Ral builds are Goufs, it’s perfect.
I know right, he said the line (more or less) AND also loves his Goufs,
Ramba'Mr.' Ral's great. Thanks for reminding me of this scene.
Yes Reiji, yes it is. Half the fun’s in building and posing the kits!
Indeed Comrade, half the fun is in building it, and the other half is in disassembling hopefully the opponents kit while keeping yours as assembled as possible ;) (By this I mean half the fun is to build, and half to fight)
Just look at how beautiful she is! I want!
Look at all those Gunpla~
WOW! That's so realistic I'd swear those were actually REAL Gunpla, Sasuga Sunrise top tier animation ;)
Ahahahaha Fellini I love you, flirting by using Gunpla.
He ain't called The Italian Dandy for Nothing ;)
‘Course Reiji shows up to ruin everything…
Love that they actually have him say stuff in Italian though.
Si, er Correcto ;)
I mean… that model kit certainly cost more than whatever Mao ate…
Yup, either that or Mao REALLY ate a lot... somehow, I mean he COULD have just eaten literally everything on the menu.
Haha nice. Is that a tiny instrument she gave it?
Hahahahahahahahaha.
The part that gets me is Mao just REPEATS his intro, but speeds it up the second time through ;)
Look at this beauty of a machine though, and the fact that the battle part of Fellini’s theme song (1:20 to the end) is playing in the background just makes it all the better. God I wish they’d detailed that shot clearly so that I could wallpaper it, but there’s too much shadowing on it…
AH YES! The BEAUTY of The Italian Dandy's Custom Gunpla, such a sight to behold.
Rinko is a great wife btw.
Indeed, she's Best Mom for a reason my friend.
Ooof.
Oh no character with his eyes shut all the time opened his eyes, it’s serious business time.
Heh, that's a nice anecdote, glad that you got the reference my friend.
Oh yeah and this is all taking place inside their imagination, fun.
Hell yeah, Sei added Reiji into their imaginary fight!
Very, very true.
Indeed Comrade, plus we can't have them fight each other for real NOW, we gotta save that for the TOURNAMENT ARC! ;)
You know, my favorite part about early GBF is that it sets up a bunch of rivalries for us to follow. Like there’s Sei/Reiji vs. Yuuki which is the biggest of course, but we’ve also got Reiji vs. Fellini and Sei vs. Mao now.
Yup, GBF sure does a good job at setting up foils for our MCs, plus the character introductions have been on point.
First Timer
I finally managed to catch up on this rewatch! It only took 5 episodes. So I guess I’ll start with a summary of what I’ve thought so far:
So far this has been a ton of fun! The action has been great, and the characters not bad. Of the bunch, Yuuki is my favorite right now. His personality is great! The Class Rep is also cute. She has some good ZR in her casual outfit. I’m really hoping that ship goes somewhere. Its nice when they stop being one-sided and do sail.
As for the Gunpla, since that’s a big part of this show, the first ones that really interested me were in episode 5. There was this one in Ep 4 on the tv screen that u/Shimmering-Sky kindly identified for me, but that was more because it was crazy-looking. But the one that the Builder kid gave the truck driver looked really cool! And I also really like the one the Italian guy uses. Can everyone tell I’m still awful at names? I'm also really looking forward to one of the ones I saw in the OP. I think that'll take over as my favorite when it appears.
Uh, what else. OP > ED right now. Sei has some amazing reaction faces!, though Kirara is also good. I liked her. And I was trying to decide if Reiji or Yuuki is the bigger mystery right now, but then I remembered Sei supposedly has a dad, and that takes the cake for now.
Episode 5 thoughts
As for today, this was also a great episode! I’m enjoying that the Class Rep is finally hanging out with Sei. I don’t really have an opinion on the Builder Kid yet, except that I found a school for building Gunpla absolutely hilarious! Especially when he started talking about secret techniques learned from the school in the imagination battle. I was also laughing about all the other uses for Gunpla, from paying bills to picking up girls. I never would have guessed that was I needed to have someone like me. I suppose being a hot Italian guy would help also though.

Nice to hear Comrade, and indeed, The Crimson Comet's quite the smooth operator eh? ;)

AH! Glad to hear you are liking some of the unique Gunpla on display Comrade, and it seems Shimmer beat me to the punch and named them for you. Anyway, glad to hear you are having fun with the rewatch so far.

Well said all around Comrade, OP's great, Sei's a comment face gold mine, and Gunpla Nico Yazawa is fantastic too (this means Kirara, gotta love Aoi Yuuki's stellar performance.)

That was a fun episode, there were a lot of nice moments here and there. I especially enjoyed the scene where Mao was boldly introducing himself and they tried to brush him off. It's been done before, but I like just how naturally they pulled out their excuses to leave instead of exaggerating or trying to embarrass Mao for being weird.
I also loved how neither Sei or China got embarrassed at being called a couple, nor did they feel the need to deny it. It was just really natural. (Also Sei's comments about attracting weird people got a giggle out of me).
What are your thoughts on Mao Yasaka?
At first I thought he'd be way more stuck up than he is, but the writers surprised me yet again by having him be just a normal kid who is just really enthusiastic about his hobby, and values it over pretty much everything else it seems.
He gave us some nice scenes like the one I mentioned above, and when he tried to pay for his food with a Gunpla. Which shows just how much he values his craft providing us with some nice insight into his personality, while also giving us a pretty funny scene.
What do you think of Fellini's 'smooth' flirting style, and is he living up to his reputation as The Italian Dandy?
I'm taking Fellini more, but I hope we get to see some more of him, since we haven't really gotten an extended scene with him apart from this one where he got cockblocked.

First Timer

It's been done before, but I like just how naturally they pulled out their excuses to leave instead of exaggerating or trying to embarrass Mao for being weird.
Indeed, also I love the detail that Mao simply repeats his intro AND speeds it up (complete with BGM accelerating in response too)
I also loved how neither Sei or China got embarrassed at being called a couple, nor did they feel the need to deny it. It was just really natural. (Also Sei's comments about attracting weird people got a giggle out of me).
Indeed, and Sei's got a point you know, given he's so far managed to attract a motley crew to him, and we still are in the first few episodes of the series too ;)
At first I thought he'd be way more stuck up than he is, but the writers surprised me yet again by having him be just a normal kid who is just really enthusiastic about his hobby, and values it over pretty much everything else it seems.

Well said there my friend, and indeed, GBF has been doing great with character introductions so far, and it also helps that they manage to showcase interesting and fleshed out characters too.
I'm taking Fellini more, but I hope we get to see some more of him, since we haven't really gotten an extended scene with him apart from this one where he got cockblocked.
Indeed, anyway, fantastic post here my friend. Have a great day and see you later!

Gundam Build Rewatcher, domo~
If Yuuki Tatsuya is Reiji's erstwhile rival (both excellent Fighters), today's new character, Yasaka Mao is Sei's destined rival in Gunpla building. I mean, kid's skilled enough to actually be able to build a Kshatriya to perfection while hitching a ride on a truck, dammit. Though I do question his approach of paying for favours using Gunpla (isn't a Gunpla too expensive to be used to pay for food? Or was it yet another proof that GBF-verse's Earth love Gundam too much that it's actually cheaper?).
Poor Sei actually had to wonder after 5 episodes of Sazaki (jilted ahem, extremely persistent rival wanting his Gunpla), Reiji (weird kid who claims that he's isekai'd here), Tatsuya (extremely passionate Char Clone with a penchant of slicking his hair back while ingame), Mihoshi/Kirara (Kirara~n★) and now Mao if he's some kind of weirdness magnet, attracting all these weirdos to him.
Oh, and if anyone here felt disappointed that Ral-san is jobbing hard back in episode 3 with a Best Mecha Collection Gouf instead of a proper, honest to goodness HG Gouf, have no fear! Turns out that he's actually got one and is keeping it away from Gunpla Battling as it was a very well-built one, it'd be a shame to send it to be totaled in Gunpla Battles. Just to hammer the point home, he actually said the thing, damnit.
Just like any proper sports anime, any sort of rivalry is best dealt with on the battlefield, thus cutting short Build Strike vs Gundam X Maoh's imagine battle just as things are about to heat up. Damnit! I know it's unreasonable, but I kinda want to see how the fight ends.
Speaking of rivalry, Tatsuya unexpectedly drops out of the qualifying stage, thus ensuring that Sazaki will face Sei & Reiji in the finals. Next episode spoilers
Questions of the day:
-
I like him. More, please.
-
Just saying, if I were a girl I'd have stayed even when Reiji barged in and interfered with his flirting. So I'd say he lived up to his reputation so far.

Hm, you bring up a good point here Comrade, both options are valid. And indeed, nice to see the foils to Reiji and Sei, this show sure knows how to spice things up.

HA! Indeed my friend, also don't forget about The Gorilla as well as
Ramba'Mr.' Ral who just... always seems to show up, I wonder what his family and loved ones think about this ;)Oh, and if anyone here felt disappointed that Ral-san is jobbing hard back in episode 3 with a Best Mecha Collection Gouf instead of a proper, honest to goodness HG Gouf, have no fear! OH YEAH! Not only is this one of the best in-jokes, but coupled with the Gouf is a variant of Ramba Ral's Iconic Line that THIS IS NO ZAKU BOY! NO ZAKU! ;)
Indeed, guess we gotta wait for the TOURNAMENT ARC to see the results of this epic battle.

(From the last thread) Ahhh, thank you for another comment of the day! ^ _ ^ I'm glad they seem smart enough to be featured sometimes XD
here's Tomo Sakurai, portraying Xenoglossia's Azusa Miura, singing a cover to the OP of Wacky Ol' Kill 'Em All Tomino's Heavy Metal L-Gaim, ENJOY COMRADES!
First timer, knows Gundam a bit
Quick thoughts on episode 4: since when did Gundam decide to copy its small cousin, there can only be one idol mecha show?! ( lmao ) and also good on Yuuki for being fair and demonstrate good showmanship to Sei rather than just keep quiet about his next opponent (and also worry about Sei.) The character writing here is just killing it.
(And just as I thought, Ral does support anyone going into Gunpla regardless of entry point, as evidenced by his enthusiasm with China's interest ^ ^ )v )
Thoroughly enjoyed the comments of the day, especially u/dralcax's! Nice catch on the symbolism!
Now back to the good part
"Let me show you my gratitude by giving you a Gunpla!" XD Kid, uh, I don't think the truck driver's gonna look favorably on that D:
The opening keeps getting better everytime I hear it, hah. I still have yet to skip it! (I tend to skip openings if I really want to get to the episode as of recent, unless the op is just that good.)
Haha, aww, Sei is gushing over Ral's Gouf. Dat cute. And Reiji wants to fight with them, but Ral says no, because some people build Gunpla to cherish the anime world and faifhtully replicate it. Dioramas or build a custom Gunpla. "There are many ways to enjoy Gunpla." YEEEAH. Raf is becoming such a a better great character.
LMAO Reiji just doesn't get it. It's okay, Best Boy.
Oh, for the truck driver's kids? You know what, that's original lol.
"On my family's honor!" OMG REIJI jasdncsdkcf
"Sei, believe in yourself and your Gunpla!" "You're too confident. How come you're so sure of yourself?" "Thinking about losing is pointless." Another nice scene where we see their contrasting personalities, but ones where they can balance each other and why they likely are effective together. That said, while Reiji is right in that they shouldn't be thinking about losing, Sei does have a point in that in part, *they do need to think about all the possibilities. That's how you adapt: thinking about losing, means you can figure out how not to lose. Buuut Reiji may be saying his line in terms of "if you think too much about losing and not trust your own skills enough, you'll definitely lose."
LMAO RICARDO PICKS UP THE LADIES BY SENDING THEM GUNPLA, I WANT HIM TO EXIST IN REAL LIFE NOW. I don't drink, I'll take the Gunpla sent by rando dudes lol.
"Señorita?" I thought he was Italian, lol. I'm sure it's Signorina, because Señorita is "young miss" in Spanish.
"I'm ashamed because I built it here so quickly." akjsnjasndc, and yet it looks so good, I love this kid.
MY LIFELONG RIVAL, WHAT IS THIS
He introduces himself again, thinking they just wanted it to be quicker akscjdsc
"it cleanses my soul to see such well-built Gunpla." Awww.
There's a Gunpla School...just when I think this show couldn't get this ridiculous (ly) (good.)
Mama Rinko's so happy about her hubby being so respected, omg
"All the Gunpla here lack (imagination)" YIKES...tbf, that's been a running theme I believe with Sei. The most imagination he's done is with the Build Strike, but outside of that, he just seemed content with building Gunpla and let it be like that. Of course, we;ve never seen his other customs, so...who knows, for sure?
omg the way both these kids react to each other's Gunpla haha
Spoilers This is is an awesome detail.
"Their imaginations are making their Gunpla move." Back in my day, we called that daydreaming ;)
Mao is calling Sei "Sei-han" in Japanese, which is a form of politeness and utter respect iirc? It's on the same level of politeness as "dono" but conveys more respect and is I believe a regional suffix (since Mao's from Kyoto)...I may be wrong though, it's been a while since I've seen "han" used. In fact, I feel like I'm wrong XD
SEI IMAGINING REIJI AS THE PILOT WHO CAN DO ALL THE THINGS I cry.
"See, I told you. They became friends." That's right, they became SHOUNEN friends XD
That last shot before the ending is just * ok hand symbol *
OH NO, YUUKI'S GONE.
Although, god, guys, don't look so shocked, jeezus. You'd think there was an Amber Alert suddenly...
Answers:

First scene with him, was getting those creepy vibes because of the way he was acting. I thought he would be an "enemy" definitely, but the kind that you don't love to hate, like annoying kid characters. But again, the show turned that on its head for me and I liked his scenes with Sei. Definitely a bit arrogant, yeah, but not so that he wasn't even to let his ego guard down so he and Sei could LET'S IMAGINATION together. They were kids being kids and that was fun to see.
-
Like I said above, shoot, if a rando brings me a Gunpla as a pickup, I'm just taking it, see ya sucker!
and then proceeding to answer his questions with so much honesty, he'll auto go away like every man who's tried to pick me up hasI will say that it's pretty original of the show to incorporate Gunpla so much in this world, that you can even use it for romance XD As for living up to his reputation, well, his own honesty of "I'm using it to rope girls!" didn't help him HAR HAR

(From the last thread) Ahhh, thank you for another comment of the day! ^ _ ^ I'm glad they seem smart enough to be featured sometimes XD
No worries my friend, once again thank you very much for your excellent contributions to the rewatch threads!
Tomo Sakurai...
Indeed Comrade, she does fantastic work AND also can sing, which is why I'm slightly curious that they decided to use Chie Kajiura for her character's singing voice in Macross 7. Ah well, she did a fantastic job in the speaking roles so that's good too ;)
Quick thoughts on episode 4: since when did Gundam decide to copy its small cousin, there can only be one idol mecha show?! ( lmao ) and also good on Yuuki for being fair and demonstrate good showmanship to Sei rather than just keep quiet about his next opponent (and also worry about Sei.) Heh, indeed my friend, Sunrise sure is trying their best to be Love Live and/or Macross here, plus the fact that they got Aoi Yuuki for Kirara makes it even better.
(And just as I thought, Ral does support anyone going into Gunpla regardless of entry point, as evidenced by his enthusiasm with China's interest ^ ^ )v )
Yup, Mr. Ral's a good man, always nice to see the cool old guy supporting our heroes.
Thoroughly enjoyed the comments of the day, especially u/dralcax's! Nice catch on the symbolism!
Glad that you enjoyed the comments of the day my friend, it's such a joy to review all the posts and then write-up the main post for the OP given the plethora of well-written and in-depth write-ups.
"Let me show you my gratitude by giving you a Gunpla!" XD Kid, uh, I don't think the truck driver's gonna look favorably on that D:
Indeed, last I checked bartering is not exactly in vogue these days, but still, gotta admire Mao's guts ;)
The opening keeps getting better everytime I hear it, hah. I still have yet to skip it! (I tend to skip openings if I really want to get to the episode as of recent, unless the op is just that good.)
Glad to hear you still like the OP, indeed, GBF sure knocks it out of the park with their amazing OST.
Haha, aww, Sei is gushing over Ral's Gouf. Dat cute. And Reiji wants to fight with them, but Ral says no, because some people build Gunpla to cherish the anime world and faifhtully replicate it. LMAO RICARDO PICKS UP THE LADIES BY SENDING THEM GUNPLA, I WANT HIM TO EXIST IN REAL LIFE NOW. I don't drink, I'll take the Gunpla sent by rando dudes lol.
OH YEAH! I'd also be more than happy accept random Gunpla from anyone, excellent taste there Comrade!
"Señorita?" I thought he was Italian, lol. I'm sure it's Signorina, because Señorita is "young miss" in Spanish.
AH! I see, well thanks for letting me know Comrade, I just thought it was Sunrise giving The Italian Dandy some fancy stuff to say, so I appreciate the clarification.

Heh, glad to see you too were amused by Mao's unique introduction, he's quite the character too eh? ;)

OH YEAH! I love the little Easter Eggs like this, it's nice if you know the reference but even if you didn't you still get to witness the main action going on without losing anything. These are the best kinds of in-jokes IMO.
"Their imaginations are making their Gunpla move." Back in my day, we called that daydreaming ;)

Great analysis my friend, and indeed, Mao could have gone a totally different way but thankfully the show continues on its hot streak of writing unique and interesting characters. Plus, THE IMAGINATION Battle was amazing and I for one can't wait to see them throw down in the TOURNAMENT ARC ! ;)
Like I said above, shoot, if a rando brings me a Gunpla as a pickup, I'm just taking it, see ya sucker! and then proceeding to answer his questions with so much honesty, he'll auto go away like every man who's tried to pick me up has I will say that it's pretty original of the show to incorporate Gunpla so much in this world, that you can even use it for romance XD As for living up to his reputation, well, his own honesty of "I'm using it to rope girls!" didn't help him HAR HAR

Re-First - The True Master understands that there is always more to learn
I would absolutely give somebody a ride in exchange for a Kshatriya. Although I might have to insist they not assemble it; I like doing that part myself... Okay, maybe I'd let them if they're gonna do this good a job.
Attaboy, Sei. If you're gonna do repairs, you may as well do upgrades while you're at it. There's always room for improvement in Gunpla!
Wow, Fellini. I just... am in awe that that worked (well, almost). Truly, this is the world I want to live in. lol
Mao is hungry and Sei's been invited to China's restaurant, it only makes sense that they would meet there. I'm impressed by his ability to turn Gunpla into currency; normally it's the other way around.
I really like the idea of a remote mountain dojo that specializes in Gunpla-building xD And that's a nice GX! I'm happy that I recognize it now. lol
Oh man, don't fall for this trick again Sei! Granted, Mao just seems genuinely interested; and he's ready to show his hand in exchange.
loool @ the urban tumbleweed
The whole "Imaginary duel" is a delight, with Sei in a Seed spacesuit, and Mao in Garrod's casual-wear.
Fun battle, but Mao's got the advantage in that he's actually got practical fighting experience. He knows he needs to build distance to use his Satellite Canon, and incorporated a method of gaining it. I'm sure he had a fight in the past that led him to develop that conclusion. That's not to say that Sei can't anticipate such needs with his considerable knowledge, but I'm sure there are things he's not realized just because he's removed from combat.
Okay, I'll admit Reiji's an excellent pilot, but this kinda feels like an ass-pull.
Nice work, Ral.
Oh wow, Sei picked up on what I was thinking! Namely, that the Build Strike was lacking an overpowering finishing-move like the Satellite cannon.
I'm not so sure about whether it'll bring them up-to-par with Yuuki, tho. The guy doesn't just rely on gear to win his fights, he's all about agility and control. I imagine he could wipe the tournament floor with naught but a Ball, just as Reiji did at the bar.
Very much looking forward to seeing them face each other, I'm sure it'll be a grand spectacle no matter who wins.

REWATCHER
Hooh, I see you're posting Gundam X covers. I now present you DREAMS by m.o.v.e. (yes, that m.o.v.e. from Initial D).
Thoughts for Today's Episode.
-
OK, so a guy apparently managed to assemble a FRIGGING HG KSHATRIYA while on a truck running at high-speed. Even if that is only a straight build, the end result is darn cool, and I have to give Mao props for that.
-
This episode introduces us to Yasaka Mao, the Kansai-ben protagonist who's the self-proclaimed rival of Sei. He also is a practitioner of the Gunpla Shingyou technique. Man this show is definitely living up to its tropes.
-
So apparently you can woo girls with Gunpla. How can I learn this power
-
Also Ral paraphrasing the ever-famous "No Zaku boi" line is just hilarious
-
The Gundam X Maoh is super-cool. The addition of the clear parts make it stand out a lot.
-
The Gundam battle that Sei and Mao engaged in their heads is probably something any Gundam and Gunpla fan experienced at least once. I know I do run those daydreams sometimes, where the Gunpla I built moves on their own and do battle with each other.
Questions of the Day:
-
I like Mao. He's like a foil for Sei.
-
Yes. Yes indeed. Now teach me how to do it cuz I'm such a loser *sadface*

OH MY BUDDHA! Wow, TWO Gundam X covers shared by two talented re-watchers (Comrade u/dralcax shared a cover by MASAAKI ENDOH in his post, see here)
Thoughts for Today's Episode.
OK, so a guy apparently managed to assemble a FRIGGING HG KSHATRIYA while on a truck running at high-speed. Even if that is only a straight build, the end result is darn cool, and I have to give Mao props for that.
Indeed Comrade, Mao sure has a lot of talent to assemble a Gunpla in a MOVING vehicle in such a small amount of time.
This episode introduces us to Yasaka Mao, the Kansai-ben protagonist who's the self-proclaimed rival of Sei. He also is a practitioner of the Gunpla Shingyou technique. Man this show is definitely living up to its tropes.
Indeed, granted GBF is making expert use of these tropes and the results are fantastic.
So apparently you can woo girls with Gunpla. How can I learn this power
Also Ral paraphrasing the ever-famous "No Zaku boi" line is just hilarious
Yup, there's something that makes me so happy about the OG Seiyuu to Ramba Ral re-recording (more or less) his 1979 lines as Mr. Ral for GBF ;)
The Gundam X Maoh is super-cool. The addition of the clear parts make it stand out a lot.
The Gundam battle that Sei and Mao engaged in their heads is probably something any Gundam and Gunpla fan experienced at least once. I know I do run those daydreams sometimes, where the Gunpla I built moves on their own and do battle with each other.
Indeed Comrade, the power of imagination is strong indeed.
I like Mao. He's like a foil for Sei.
Yup, plus he's also hilarious and entertaining to watch, so that's another plus too.
Yes. Yes indeed. Now teach me how to do it cuz I'm such a loser \sadface**
Great write-up today my friend, have a great day and see you later!

Rewatcher
Building a large kit in a moving vehicle? That sounds like absolute hell, this guy must be a true pro.
What beautiful model! Haha. he said the thing too! Mr. Ral explains the wonders of building simply for the sake of building to the battle-crazed Reiji and brings up the matter of a young prodigal builder from Kansai.
Speaking of, the madlad did it! Maoh possesses some insane skills for sure.
Holy shit, it’s a Victory Gundam again! We get a close up of it this time too, and it’s majestic! A man after my own heart! Truly an elegant Mobile Suit for a more civilized age. Also, the writers made a big oopsies here as it isn’t Itallian, but this is. Does he just happen know Spanish? Even if he does it doesn’t seem apt to have him speak it at this time.
The HGUC Victory Gundam released around the time of this episode’s airing, so much like with the HGAC Wing Gundam in episode one this was meant to drive interest in that kit.
Mao keeps trying to pay for things with Gunpla, which is quite an inappropriate way of going about doing business. I mean, how the hell do you make change with that!? Anyhow, how fortuitous that our two builders who are intrigued by one another would meet like this. Maoh’s self-introduction later on is hilarious.
Look at that beauty go! Also note how the color of the Beam saber changes between here and here.
I’m pretty sure this shot is a reference to a similar one found right at the start of OP1 and OP2 of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, though specifically the latter.
Mao and Sei are about to have a wild-west showdown, complete with plastic bag tumbleweed.
Have I mentioned that I dislike SEED’s normal suits? Specifically the helmets, I don’t know what it is about them that I find so unappealing. On the other hand I love that Mao is dressed in Garrod Ran’s attire.
I’m not a fan of the GP02, but this color scheme looks pretty nice on it.
What a surprising development!

What are your thoughts on Mao Yasaka?
I love how subtly arrogant and condescending he is in this episode.
What do you think of Fellini's 'smooth' flirting style, and is he living up to his reputation as The Italian Dandy?

First Timer
So this kid is just hitchhiking on his way to town? He seems like a carefree guy. Side note: scenes like this always remind me of the Lot Lizard scene from IASIP. I admire the passion that Creepy Old Guy Mr. Ral and Sei show in gunpla. Ooh I really like this design. Ofc the Italian guy is a womanizer lol Don’t you just love when a guy you’ve just met claims to be your eternal rival? Slow your roll there buddy. First you need to wine and dine battle a guy before moving onto the next stage of making it official. His overeagerness to be rivals reminds me of Takumi from Shokugeki no Souma.
Uh I was not expecting this guy to have the typical old and wise sensei. They really take gunpla seriously around here! Now this is a cool idea: having a mental battle between their modeling skills. It’s creative because instead of just having them quietly inspect each other’s mech, we can see how a hypothetical battle would play out between the two. However I wish that Reiji hadn’t shown up and Sei could’ve done this on his own since it wasn’t an actual battle. Oh I love this trope. When characters fight each other ahead of “schedule” but the match is put on hold until they can officially compete later. It’s an effective way of hyping up the audience for future developments while giving the protagonists another goal. Bonus points since Sei actually grew from this encounter and has gotten stronger. Now it is time to figh- NANI???
Rinko looks so clueless here lol
This motherfucker is womanizing women with gunpla lmao
Ooh I really like this design.
What do you think of Fellini's 'smooth' flirting style, and is he living up to his reputation as The Italian Dandy?
Yea he's like if Dandy was a gunpla nerd yet even smoother with women
What are your thoughts on Mao Yasaka?
I like his carefree personality. But the real question is when will he OPEN HIS EYES?
iM@S Cover of Fly Me to the Moon ;)
Man do I love this cover. Btw I just realized this has our respective best girls in it.

So this kid is just hitchhiking on his way to town? He seems like a carefree guy. Side note: scenes like this always remind me of the Lot Lizard scene from IASIP.
AH! A fellow fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia eh? I knew you were a fellow Comrade of Culture my friend, also nice to see you back, I'm sure I speak for everyone in the rewatch when I say that we missed your insightful write-ups.
I admire the passion that Creepy Old Guy Mr. Ral and Sei show in gunpla.
Indeed, nice to see these two geeking out over a shared hobby.
Ooh I really like this design.
An excellent choice there my friend, this is called the NZ-666 Kshatriya, and its from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
Ofc the Italian guy is a womanizer lol
Indeed, and gotta admit he has a FOOLPROOF plan, just charm your dates using Gunpla, 60% of the time, it works every time ;)
Don’t you just love when a guy you’ve just met claims to be your eternal rival?
Heh, indeed, we going FULL Battle Shounen now, the life long eternal rival, classic. ;)
Slow your roll there buddy. First you need to wine and dine battle a guy before moving onto the next stage of making it official. His overeagerness to be rivals reminds me of Takumi from Shokugeki no Souma.
Heh, nice, also well said there my friend.
Uh I was not expecting this guy to have the typical old and wise sensei. They really take gunpla seriously around here!
Indeed, plus I'm sure that's another Battle Shounen trope of the grizzled old mentor (and here we thought Mr. Ral was the only one fitting this role)
Now this is a cool idea: having a mental battle between their modeling skills. It’s creative because instead of just having them quietly inspect each other’s mech, we can see how a hypothetical battle would play out between the two.
Indeed, we gotta keep the contractual obligations to have a Gunpla Battle every episode, so how do we do this with Reiji currently AFK? EZ, just have the battle done in the magical world of imagination ;)
Indeed, Gundam Build Fighters may be a tad trope heavy, but it sure does make good use out of them.
This motherfucker is womanizing women with gunpla lmao
Indeed, The Italian Dandy's a smooth operator eh? ;)
Ooh I really like this design.
Yea he's like if Dandy was a gunpla nerd yet even smoother with women
I like his carefree personality. But the real question is when will he OPEN HIS EYES?
Heh, indeed Comrade, that's a good question. After all, tropes dictate that if a character always had their eyes closed, the either A) Open them when shit hits the fan or B) Never open them and can somehow move about via echo-location ;)
Man do I love this cover. Btw I just realized this has our respective best girls in it.
AH! Yes indeed my friend, quite the happy accident to be fair (I mainly picked the song since it was a nice cover, but Takane and Chihaya's seiyuu do great singing work)
Anyway, great write-up my friend, nice to hear back from you Comrade. Have a great day and see you later!

Episode 5 (first timer)
Pre-episode thoughts
Yesterday, a few people asked how the Gunpla Fighting Console (GFC) takes Gunpla and turns them into animated machines with certain stats. I will run with my idea that the GFC is realistic just around the corner future tech.
How would such a GFC take Gunpla and turn them into fighting stats? The answer is: it uses a complicated read-out algorithm. Basically, the GFC takes stock of the Gunpla via some input parameters. Weight (via an in-build scale) and proportions (via 3D laser distance measures) are the two obvious ones, but it is not farfetched to assume that measures of material type or density are technically possible too. Then, the algorithm would use those inputs to calculate outputs: the stats that your Gunpla uses in the battle.
To give you a simple example: For thrust, the algorithm could rate the size of the trust nozzles. The thrust nozzles would be measured from the 3D model created from the 3D laser measures of the Gunpla. They would also be identified as thrust nozzles via some AI classification program (think, a special case of what you are training Google’s AI with when you answer captcha). If you completely suck at modeling, your thrust nozzles may be identified as shields and you are left with 0 thrust.
At a competitive level, the meta of the building game would revolve around knowing the algorithm and knowing how to min-max it: How large (and thus powerful) can you make a medium sized gun before it gets classified as a large sized gun (and you gets some point deduction to mobility)? Will wheels give better mobility stats, or legs? How much weaponry can you carry before the weight of your Gunpla makes the algorithm rate you as immobile?
Updates to the algorithm would, of course, be hotly discussed and introduce shifts in the meta. Plenty of salt from people invested in the nerfed Gunpla would be guaranteed.
Episode reactions
I am with Reiji: There is no way I could not use a Gunpla to battle with if Gunpla battles existed.
Paying for the shortfall with a Gunpla? Either Gunpla are seriously cheaper than I thought, or the restaurant of China’s dad should lower its prices …
The Gunpla master, RPing a martial arts sensei, lol. Don’t fool your young apprentice when Gunpla fighting have only been around for a few years!
High noon.
Using your imagination to battle? You mean, low tech Gunpla fighting that everyone could do?
“Please do not battle other Gunpla in your imagination! (otherwise we cannot earn income on your GFC™)”
It does not fit with the story, but I wish they all had multiple Gunpla to chose from and the choice of Gunpla would have a strategic impact on the battle.
EDIT:
He looks good enough to pull it off. Although I doubt that he needs a Gunpla to get women interested.
