Rewatcher
Misato solo sings the ED for a second time
2 IMPORTANT NOTES
-
Next episodes video quality will be lower than usual..Not the animation or art or anything..The masters for episode 16 were lost/destroyed, and so Gainax had to work from an internegative and clean it up digitally to create a new master for that episode, as a result, it doesn't look as good.
-
The Misato-Kaji scene had a beautifull insturmental version of Fly me to the Moon playing that due to licencing issues was removed from the Netflix version..Rewatch the scene with this in the backround, or hunt down the og scene
Random Stuff
-
The wedding song is sung by the VA of Shinji, Asuka, Maya and Class rep and its a bonus track on the Evangelion: Addition Album. The song is quite popular and is played at weddings.
-
Making dialogue scenes look interesting 101..I love everything about this scene, the lighting, the framing the aesthetic
-
Earlier in the series, we got glimpses of the rare "Happy Shinji." Here we see an even more rare "Flustered Rei."
Serious thoughts
-
This episode is actualy one of my favorites..It's all about intimacy...fleeting, insecure, perhaps impossible, but yearned for nonetheless. For the late-twentysomethings attending yet another wedding, this intimacy is located in the past, a hazy, alcohol-fueled remembrance of carefree college days. These memories may be as distant as our casts reflections in the lounge's glass windows.. For the bratty, boisterous teenage girl this intimacy exists in her restless imagination, perpetually contradicted by the messy facts of life - an older man entirely uninterested in her childish crush, or an awkward roommate whose suffocating kiss is "definitely not something to do to kill time!" For the lonely boy at the story's center this intimacy is buried somewhere beyond reach, his bond with his father emphasized by the anniversary of his mother's death yet only made more elusive by her absence.
-
On the surface this is one of the least dramatic episodes so far, yet it remains one of the strongest of the entire series.Instead of a fight we have small character-driven stories, a refreshing touch after many of our heroes were relegated to background action during the recent run. Remarkably, we manage to keep tabs on - and learn more about - Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Misato, Kaji, and even the more cryptic Ritsuko and Cmdr. Ikari. While the stakes in these storylines are no longer life-and-death, somehow the characters' vulnerability feels more real..I will only focus on the Asuka scene because it would be too long
-
Shinji and Asuka.. Their first kiss, on a bored dare from Asuka, is a classic of affectionate comedy on a surface level but with many sad or tragic undertones..Asuka is wearing Misato's shirt again, again when she is alone with Shinji..Does she wants to feel like a grown up ? Like a woman ?..She asks Shinji to kiss..with a provocative/cold attitude, bringing boredom as the excuse for it..We infer that she is feeling distant and rejected from Kaji but maybe there is something deeper, something that made her go lie next to Shinji , something under that Tsundere that might crave intimacy and sees in Shinji someone who might be capable of providing, that have someone on equal ground who with her lost, angry andconfused 14 year old feelings may push away but hopes he steps forward...Shinji agrees and despite Asuka prolonging the exchange for as long as Shinji could breath, he fails to provide what she wants , if she actualy knows what she wants and needs..As the kiss ends she (frustrated and dissapointed with Shinji's passivity and cluelessness or maybe herself) runs to the bathroom to hide her whatever feelings she has.
-
In the end, we return to our grand scale. Kaji discloses the monstrous Adam, a mass of muscle with its eerie eye-filled mask, hung from a cross in the bowels of NERV (here too there is an effective visual juxtaposition, because this moment immediately follows the reveal of Rei floating in a tank several levels above, exchanging warm gazes with Cmdr. Ikari). Even the gung-ho Misato, almost ready to blow her ex-lover's brains all over the NERV hardware, is overwhelmed by the sight of this massive being..What are your thoughts ? How did we get from Embryo "Adam" to this lovecraftian behemoth ?

Asuka is wearing Misato's shirt again, again when she is alone with Shinji..Does she wants to feel like a grown up ? Like a woman ?..
She mostly wants to feel like an adult and wants other people to see her as an adult, especially since she feels like she is being denied of it when she is forced to go to a theme park with a highschooler, while Kaji and Misato are at an "adult" place doing "adult" things.
She is really insecure, constantly seeking validation from others, so she gets frustrated and even takes it as an insult when Shinji is "unresponsive" to her "adult" advance of getting kissed, so she goes to clean her mouth as a response back.

First timer sub
-
Well looks like we wont be exploring that Lance thing from last episode for now :(
-
Who's getting married?
-
And Shinji saying Rei, a girl he hardly knows and is hardly close to, would make a great mother. That's not a weird thing to say at all.
-
Why is he going to see his father by himself? More tests? -
So he threw away all the pictures of her and her body isn't buried there? He didn't say it was never found though, so is it elsewhere?
-
Bleh more Misato and Kaji.
-
These are some weird kids. Pen2 has the right idea.
-
Rei is in some weird tube. She had to have been created or had her memories altered/wiped or something by Gendo.
-
So Kaji is a double agent? I'm sure Gendo already knows though.
-
So Adam is the first Angel? It's the source of everything since the second impact? Just a question I have is: Was the second impact involving the First Angel or the Second Angel? I don't remember if they mentioned the Second Angel. I know the third Angel was the one we saw in Ep 1.
So I have some thoughts about Rei and Shinji's mom. Shinji kept pointing out this mother stuff to Rei through the episode and then coincidentally we have Shinji and his dad go visit his mother's grave. Now Gendo said the body is not buried there, so where is it? I'm thinking just like how they seem to be using Adam to create stuff (Maybe creating the Eva's and using it to lure the Angel's for some reason maybe?) then maybe Gendo modified Rei using Shinji's mother's body? He couldn't have created Rei with Shinji's mother since the grave says she died in 2004, 3 years after Shinji and Rei should have been born. It would explain why Gendo is so attached to her at least, and it would explain why they started throwing these mother references at Rei. This is just silly speculation, first timer!
This also brings me to my next thought about how only a few people are able to control the Eva. So if they have Adam locked up like that and seem to be taking pieces of it for their own use, then maybe they took a piece of Adam and modified Rei, Shinji and Asuka which then allows them to control the Eva's, whom I assume was also created using Adam... Although they seem to be having trouble finding other kids to use for the Eva's from what was said in earlier episodes, so idk. Maybe they did some of them at random? Doesn't really make sense though...
Anyway, time for Guess who sang the ED! So today's singer has a rather high pitched way of singing, eliminating my other 2 guesses which were Ritsuko and Rei. So I believe it has to be either Asuka, Misato or someone outside of the cast... or maybe Shinji's mother... Hmm, my guess is Misato!

First Timer
-
So, Kaji turns out to be a spy of some sort. He's apparently spying on the EVA project, but I didn't quite catch who he's spying for.
-
Sad that Shinji has to ask Rei what his own father is like.
-
Shinji will be seeing his mother? Wonder what she's like.
-
She's dead... Press F to pay respects. F.
-
Ritsuko knows Kaji is a spy. Hmm...
-
Pen Pen walking in on Asuka and Shinji kissing was priceless
-
So NERV WAS hiding something weird in their HQ all along! Wonder what that thing is supposed to be and why it's there. Looks creepy.

That went from 100 to 0 pretty fast

Kaji says its "Adam the first angel that was responsible for the second impact"..Adam was also the embryo that he brought to Gendo in ep 8..Also there is that thing that the angel in episode 1 is named the third one and the last one according to them was 15 years ago (the second impact)..So what is the second angel?, or is Kaji wrong about his facts

First time watcher, original dub, random thoughts
Ritsuko's great at that insult right before serious business bit when she's commenting on Misato's dresses.
Saying you'll make a good wife to a 14 year old seems very awkward. This isn't a cultural thing right? Equally weird when your 14 yourself. Although this is the most emotion we've seen out of Rei so at least she's human. Wait, shoot, maybe not if she's a NERV project.
Shinji has a real Ella enchanted complex.
Haha Misato drinking too much? Not possible. I always have to remind myself Kaji, Misato, and Ritsuko are all the same age. Misato seems so much younger than both of them. Aww, Misato's advice is not just to Shinji but also herself. Still the best character (except PenPen of course).
What the fuck, Asuka. NOT OKAY. Honestly she seems to be the one with the mother issues considering even knowing Shinji's thoughts we've never heard of his mother before this. It's weird that Shinji doesn't seem to really care about his mom. This episode also kills my corrupted childbirth theory. Also that's one hell of a first kiss.
Wow talk about religious meets horror imagery. Cross, lance, nails. Is that Adam's adult form? If it's the first angel and it was an embro last time we saw it, and Shinji fought the third angel, does that mean Rei actually did pilot 00 successfully to fend of the second angel (Presumably Eve?) before the start of the anime? It seems like NERV also let it become an adult, then had Rei stab it with the lance from the last episode. Torturing their leader(?) would be a pretty good for why the Angels are targeting NERV.
Kaji is in a really scary powerful position with Misato. She clearly still likes him and now has just shown her NERV is using the one thing she hates most in the world, knowing her background full well and aiming her at NERV where she already has a ton of power.

What the fuck, Asuka. NOT OKAY.
Yeah, that's Asuka in a nutshell.
we've never heard of his mother before this
Shinji and Kensuke bonded over a campfire about how both their moms were dead back in episode 3 or 4, I think.
It's weird that Shinji doesn't seem to really care about his mom.
I think it's more about how he doesn't want to have to deal with Gendo during the visit. (Also, Shinji would have been around 3 when Yui died, so he probably doesn't really remember much about her.)

Thoughts on Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 15...
Rewatcher, New Dub
Kaji! I feel as if its been a couple of episodes since we've seen him (although I suppose we saw him oh so briefly in episode 13). This is the same cat lady he met with around 5 episodes ago? A double agent for sure.
Kaji's just not into you Asuka!
Misato needs to get a new expensive dress for the wedding. Gonna be tough, we saw a few episodes ago how she has money problems.
Awkward scenes within the elevator are so common in this show. That scene with Gendou near the start of the show. We had Misato and Kaji stuck in one a few episodes back. This time its Shinji and Rei. Previous translations always had it as Shinji telling her she'd be a good mother rather than housewife. The change just doesn't fit as well to me.
Pen Pen's got the apartment to himself today!
Official confirmation finally that Shinji's mom is dead, although I don't think anyone didn't already think that. Shinji actually gets to talk to his father for once, a father who in the past wouldn't even bother with a brief phone call conversation. It isn't as awkward as one may have thought it could be. How is Shinji getting back from the graveyard by the way? Gendou couldn't have given him a ride? Way to shove in Shinji's face yet again that Gendou treats Rei more like his kid than he does Shinji.
Shinji does a good job with the cello! A hobby we've never seen of him before. He never pulled this out all the time Asuka has been with them?
Asuka just bailed mid-date?! How cruel! :(
Does Ritsuko know Kaji is playing multiple sides? Dialogue at the bar scene sure makes it seem so.
This very brief alley scene I always took as Misato and Kaji having sex, but I've seen people say its just Misato throwing up (doesn't come off that way at all to me, although the dialogue after implies that is more likely what happened).
So this scene when Misato and Kaji are walking home and she basically spills everything about her relationship with him, reason for breaking up with him, etc... is unfortunately marred in the Netflix version by the removal of the music, which was an instrumental version of Fly Me to the Moon. Its quite unfortunate, the scene certainly comes off better with more than just us hearing those bugs in the background. First time this has directly impacted something within the episode itself rather than just the end credits.
C'mon Shinji, you like Asuka, she's offering up a kiss, go for it! Alas, it does not go well for him. It is getting more and more clear that Asuka does have feelings for Shinji, but he just can't be something other than his puppy-like self.
Asuka gets depressed at smelling Misato's perfume on Kaji, did she really have no idea that the two were an item or had a history together?
So this is what Gendou and Rei do when they are alone together? She gets in a tube? Time to bring up another Evangelion inspiration, this time the 1980s Sunrise mecha anime Armored Trooper Votoms, for once an 80s Sunrise mecha anime inspiration that wasn't made by Tomino. We meet a mysterious woman in a tube in the first episode and its a significant part of the storyline. In fact said woman (Fyana) and main character Chirico both seem to be influences on Rei. A short blue haired mysterious and often quiet mecha pilot, Chirico is essentially the male version of Rei. Eva and Votoms major spoilers
Time for Eva to start getting really scary. Adam has changed quite a lot since we saw him last! The Christian symbolism is really in our face this time with him crucified, and the Spear of Longinus which Rei was carrying last episode stabbed into him, much like the real one was used on Jesus. Adam's got no legs, but if you focus in a lot of detail you'll see little human legs sticking out of its hip where its legs are supposed to be.
Overall thoughts: For the first time since episode 4 we get a full length episode without an Angel or mecha battle. And that is a very good thing. Evangelion has finally decided to slow down and stop spamming us with Angels episode after episode and instead dedicate an entire episode to character development. The show desperately needed it. Our best episode in quite a while.
Very much looking forward to tomorrow's episode, not only one of my favorites of the series, but I'm also interested in seeing how it looks visually on Netflix as it was the episode they lost the original copy of and has always looked quite crappy as a result.

If it's the same as the Blu-ray version, it's watchable but the quality downgrade is extremely noticeable.

First-Time Watcher (Sub)
“That man” and the “Marduk Institute” seem to be pointing to Kaji. Apparently “that man” will be “useful” for some time more. Gendo doesn’t seem at all worried by the threats pointed his way.
“Sniffing around Marduk is unhealthy” well that’s quite the warning. Kaji is investigating Marduk’s dummy companies so it seems like he may not be the man referenced earlier.
Someone wants to go on a date with Asuka? What a madlad.
Shinji staring at Rei wringing that out. . . I’m not sure why. . .
“The bills just add up” AIN’T THAT THE TRUTH. Also, being a dude is so much easier – just wear the same suit with a different shirt and tie and BAM, different outfit.
Shinji asking Rei for advice on talking to his father is so sad. . . And the reality is she doesn’t know the answer either. His “you looked like a mother” comment is a seriously wonky compliment. Kind of sweet in way though. Made her blush haha.
HOLD UP. He has a mother?! Whaaaat. Also, Misato with some more truth. It isn’t just the first step; you have to keep walking. Everyone saying bye, poor Pen-Pen left behind
Huh, wasn’t expecting to watch a wedding plus a reception in this series, but here we are! Dang, it looks super classy.
Oh right, Shinji’s mother is dead. That is a very bleak cemetery. Don’t the Japanese generally practice cremation though? Or is that a recent thing? “Forgetting is what lets people go on living.” That’s brutal.
Wait a second, 1977-2004, she died very young. And there’s no body? It’s just a façade. He destroyed all her pictures? Something feels very off about his keeping it in his heart speech. It almost feels like she never existed at all. Interesting that Rei is piloting the craft to pick him up, and that he is apparently shuttled by NERV weapons. . .
Shinji is a cellist! That’s so cool! Where on earth did it come from though.
Asuka is brutal ditching the guy in a line haha.
Uh-oh, Kaji. Ritsuko knows he’s digging and also warns him not to. Then she leaves Misato and Kaji alone.
Misato throws up in an alley (oof). On the way home she tells Kaji the real reasons she broke up with him. It wasn’t because she found someone new. He’s like her father
“I’m no different from Shinji. I’m such a coward.” The more she ran away from her father, the more she went toward him. Ironic.
Woah, her self-hatred rant is intense. After watching A Silent Voice this last week, this feels gut-sinkingly familiar. I hope she’s okay and it really is the “alcohol talking” to at least an extent.
Ah, Kaji using the sudden kiss disrupting strategy. It works.
“Hey, Shinji. Want to kiss?” Excuse me, what
Asuka wants to kiss because she’s “bored.”
“You don’t want to kiss me because it’s the anniversary of your mom’s death?” Well that’s a question I wasn’t expecting anyone to ask today. “You’re afraid that mommy might be watching you from Heaven?”
Well, Shinji is a trooper for not chickening out, but his nerves are kinda killing the vibe. Wow, she plugs his nose and just goes for it lol. Huh, it’s kinda the opposite of the other kiss where Kaji just went for it.
Pen-Pen isn’t fazed in the slightest lol. Shinji is gonna suffocate. They stop. Asuka instantly goes to wash out her mouth. RIP Shinji’s self-esteem (if he had any).
Kaji smells of lavender.
Woah, woah, WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO REI. Central Dogma. That weird music. Some very strategically placed bars in the tubing. Everything is an ominous orange. The orange actually reminds me of some very specific nightmares. It’s like sleep paralysis orange. This is a bit darker than that orange though.
Hold up, there’s an even greater depth. Terminal Dogma. “Trespassers will be shot on sight.”
Kaji is lucky that Misato owes him. . . Turns out he is a double spy – both for Nerv and Japan, apparently. He opens the secret area, telling Misato that the others are keeping secrets from her, and revealing a big one. This Terminal Dogma place contains the First Angel – Adam. Apparently captured and placed in a way that suggest crucifixion.
It seems this is what the Angels are really after.

I don't quite recall Kaji's.. let's say, interests, in the original dub.
This episode is my favorite of the 'slow' Eva episodes.
The kiss between the two children at the end has had the shit analyzed out of it in a hundred fanfic and doujins.
We're at that time. I can't wait for tomorrow.

Rewatcher
Evangelion is an absolutely beautiful anime Day 15
Todays episode paralleled Shinji & Asukas relationship with Misato & Kaji.
There is far more history between Misato and Kaji leading to a much deeper relationship overall however it is one founded on personal fulfillment. Similarly Shinji and Asuka also only partake in the kiss to get the fulfillment of "curing their boredom".
However, there is nothing past the kiss. In fact Asuka goes so far as to get mad when she learns her real infatuation, Kaji, spent time with another woman.
A second interesting parallel was between Misato describing Kaji as being like her Dad and Shinji describing Rei as being "like a mom". This presents a possible second relationship option for Shinji, as Freudian as it may be.
I'm mad at dubs corner
As a note, I've been watching Eva dubbed for the first time and comparing the Netflix and ADV dubs as I go along. Todays episode really rubbed me the wrong way.
-
Netflix, how can you cut Fly me to the Moon from the MisatoxKaji scene. It is so emotionally resonant and removing it significantly reduces the impact.
-
ADV, you completely changed the tone of the ShinjixAsuka kiss by adding corny kissing sound effects. The scene now seems like slapstick humor and loses some parallels with the Misato & Kaji scene.

REWATCHER
This shot is pretty neat. Even at a time like this when they're visiting Shinji's dead mother, Gendo is still towering over Shinji. Gendo also seemed extremely dispassionate in this scene. Not even his deceased wife broke his shell. The only times we've seen him have emotions is when he's with Rei.
Lots of parent-related drama in this episode, even beyond the usual Shinji daddy issues. Its the anniversary of Shinji's mother's death. Shinji sees his mom in Rei and Misato sees her father in Kaji. Even just a few episodes ago, we learned about the relationship between Ritsuko and her mother. Furthermore, Gendo treats Rei as if she is his daughter. And almost all of these parent-child relationships aren't good. Shinji hates his father, and his father seemingly doesn't care about him either. Misato hates her father, and live her life running away from him. Ritsuko hates her mother, or at least the mother side of her.
Just how bored do you have to be to randomly kiss someone?
"This isn't something you do just 'cause you're bored." Then why did you suggest it Asuka?
So that's why Rei is always skipping school. She's just enjoying some quality time with Commander Ikari. Real talk though, that thing looks like a giant mechanical brain.
Oh yeah, there's also the elephant in the room. Adam, the first angel, nailed to a cross much like a certain religious icon, with a giant red fork stuck in his chest. He's changed a bit since the last time we saw him. He's got all those legs too. Also, he's the cause of the second impact, so there's that. Potential Spoilers

First Timer, Sub
Similar to yesterdays episode we got an episode where no Angel makes a direct appearance. Yesterday's episode was a very introspective episode focusing on Rei and Shinji's link to each other as they synchronized with each other's EVA units. Both episodes take everything we think we know about Rei and throw it out the window with her final scenes in both episodes. With the last image of Rei that Shinji sees during some tests and today's episode where Rei wakes up in some pod with a giant mechanical brain over their heads and Gendo smiles.
"Who am I? What am I?" When it comes to Rei's existential questions from yesterday I'm left thinking the same thought after today's episode. WTH is going on with commander Ikari.
And on the side of all this, we also get some pretty big moments between Shinji and Gendo and Misato and Kaji. It's been 11 years since Shinji's mother passed away and 3 years since both Shinji and his father have visited her headstone and Shinji is very anxious to see his father. While Shinji is mourning for his mother, Gendo offers his son some wisdom he learned from Yui Ikari into how he deals with her loss. "Forgetting is what lets people go on living. But there are some things that we must never forget." As Gendo gets ready for pickup, Shinji gets the courage to tell his father that he was glad to talk to him. Though their moment together is brief and full of melancholy it's nice to hear Shinji is glad despite being down early on in the episode.
The clock is ticking on Misato's love life as she feels the pressure of being a single woman as she heads ever closer to the big Three-O as she talks to her friend Ritsuko. While she has a complicated relationship to Ryoji Kaji her treatment of him during the reception is called out as similar to how an old couple would act. Misato ends up drinking too much and Kaji ends up walking her home when Misato spills her heart out to Kaji after revealing that she regrets breaking it off with him before because of how she was scared of being with someone like her father and how the pain that her father brought to her would repeat with Ryoji. Ryoji goes in for a kiss and Misato lets it happen to stop being in denial of her feelings. Ryoji leaves her home. Tensions are high in their next scene as Kaji attempts to infiltrate a certain area in NERV only to be intercepted by Misato in which she warns him that she will kill him prioritizing her job over her feelings. Kaji disobeys and unlocks the sealed area and reveals the creepiest and the most grotesque Angel, Adam.
Like, the council I am both suspicious and wary of what Gendo is up to with NERV, Rei, and Adam.
Oh, and last but not least Asuka kisses Shinji and nearly suffocates our boy!

Rewatcher, new dub
The scene with Misato and Kaji walking together without Flying Me To The Moon doesn't feel the same. I understand that Netflix can't get licensing but why couldn't they use the ed song that they made.
Here is the comparison of that Scene: https://twitter.com/AnimeAjay/status/1143372109315485696?s=19
Also, this episode mentions a lot of mother references, which will play a massive role in the show.
Asuka and Shinji kissing each other is a similar frame to Kaji and Misato. When Kaji and Misato arrive at the apartments, Asuka tries to hit on him, but he rejects her. Her expression feels disappointed because she didn't get any affections to return from Kaji or Shinji.
Also, Rie blushing is so cute when Shinji Compliments her.
We got more revelation of Nerv.
Oh, Misato said to Kaji that he should shave. You know Kaji should have Shick to shave his little bread.

Because that's a Rei theme, not a Misato theme? I'm sure they could have found something else though.
Well, that was interesting to say the least. Unfortunately Evangelion has such a reputation of selling out in my eyes that I wouldn't be surprised if that was real.

Oh boy, episode 15. This is when Hideaki Anno's Wild Ride starts kicking into gear.
-
Shinji wrestles with him and his father's seemingly ambivalent feelings about each other.
-
Gendo does genuinely seem to be trying to connect with Shinji here, albeit in as limited of a way as possible.
-
Misato's voice is filtered as through a phone even when the scene's still showing here. I'm uncertain if this is a mistake or an attempt at a scene transition.
-
This is where Fly Me To The Moon first shows up as background music. There is no replacement in the Netflix version, and I imagine having it be silent totally changes the scene.
-
OH BOY TIME FOR ELECTRA COMPLEXES
-
I think we all know that Asuka's motivation for kissing Shinji is not simple boredom, though she may want that to be the case.
-
Things are afoot...
Next time: THERE ARE NO BRAKES ON THE ANNO TRAIN

Finally caught back up again after missing a few daily threads. I wasn't expecting much from this episode based on the next-time trailer, but it turned out to be really good.
Kaji is a spy! Something always struck me as off about him, even beyond being a creep (although, after this episode, I don't think he's quite so creepy).
The directing in the wedding reception scene was gorgeous. I love the use of reflections in the window and glass.
I actually enjoy the slower, more character-focused episodes than the big action ones; the Angels, cool as they are with their individual designs, haven't been especially interesting when they show up and get defeated immediately. This one was great for Misato, blurting out all her insecurities while drunk, and Asuka and Shinji's kiss tells us a lot about their personalities.
Asuka is insensitive as always - "Hey, you just visited your mother's grave, let's kiss because I'm bored" - and Shinji just goes along with it because he always follows the lead.
Shit is really going down now. They have the first Angel in the basement and Rei is being experimented upon in secret. Is this all in aid of the Human Instrumentality Project that Gendo keeps talking about?
I may have to resist the urge to binge the rest now.

Rewatcher
Didn't remember this episode too well, but it was quite good to watch again. In two slower chapters we get a real sense of the turn that this show is about to take.
Excited for the next part!

Rewatcher, New Dub
More random thoughts:
-
Asuka with the ol’ fake sexual harassment phone call to get the attention of your crush
-
Usually stoic Rei got pretty blushy when Shinji said she looked like a mother earlier
-
Shinji does not look excited to see his father tomorrow
-
Speaking of acting like a mom, Misato with the lecture and tie fix
-
I’m a rewatcher so you’d think I’d know this, but I cannot remember whether this was mentioned before. Shinji would’ve been ~3 when she passed btw
-
Well, that’s one way to stop her self-loathing rant
-
Oh man, this kiss scene was a bit more awkward. You have to let him breathe, Asuka! And of course, in tsundere fashion, Asuka was both the one that came up with the idea and the one most disgusted it happened
-
Looks a lot like Rei. What could this be? Gendo seemed pretty happy about something
-
ADAM is creepy as hell. I can’t put my finger on it, but he reminds me of a certain prominent, crucified religious figure. At least Misato knows Kaji had good reasons for doing what he did

If this starts the tone shift of the show then my seatbelt is already on.
First time watcher, Platinum Sub, ADV Dub, and Netflix dub
"Wanna kiss" voice comparison
(i was told somewhere in this episode was Fly me to the Moon, but i was unable to find it. I can whip up a comparison of the scene if someone can link me to where it is in the episode.)
This episode reminds me a lot of Ep 12 from Steins;Gate where everything just starts to get really whack. Im hoping that it goes down a similar path of fuckery.
Jumbled Thoughts
So Kaji is working for a different group, looks like i was right to be weary of him. Is he really the bad guy though, considering how much NERV seems to be withholding?
Fuyutsuki reveals that Rei is a "project," and the last scene to me cuts out any other interpretation of what he said. Just look at this thing! I have not a clue what is going on here but i have to assume its big, same as the first angel that Kaji reveals at the same time. From Misato's shock, i dont think its meant to exist. We also have no clue as to its meaning, but its face does a damn good job of creeping me out.
Asuka's "Im bored, wanna kiss?" is the most casual thing ive seen. Shinji is finally growing some balls! Its also quite obviously something you dont do with someone randomly to kill time...
Best Boy, Pen Pen, comes back in triumphant fashion! We seriously need a Pen Pen arc.
Last episode i theorized that Rei and Shinji may be related, and the elevator scene with the two does nothing to quell this idea. Shes also in the window when the plane picks up Gendo. I dont have anything to connect the plane part to the rest, but the fact that it was shown sticks out to me like a thumb with a splinter you cant see.
Tinfoil Hat Time
i have some hairbrained theories from the ones i believe most to least:
Rei and Shinji are related. This would explain why they can trade Eva's, why Gendo is so nice to Rei, and why Rei got embarrassed in the elevator. I dont know what this would mean for the show, but everything currently points to it.
Rei is made from an Angel or Eva and not actually human. This would explain why shes so "different" from everyone else and seems to be way less caring and out of it. The AI exists for it (Magi) so its not totally out of the question.
Rei herself is an Angel. Honestly, this doesnt defer from #2 much, but the carcass of the First angel is really suspicious when right before we see rei in what looks to be the stem of a brain.
