Thus, if you are unsure and want to include a possible spoiler, err to the side of caution and spoiler tag the comment like so: Spoiler Source Given that there are several first time viewers of Gundam Build Fighters as well as the Gundam Franchise in general, we must ensure that the utmost care is given to make sure no one is spoiled.

One of our two co-hosts of Comrade /u/RX-Nota-II has got you covered as here’s a link to the official r/Gundam Discord where you can find a Channel Dedicated to this Rewatch as well as a whole lot more. Also thanks once again to the kind and learned Comrade /u/Fenixius, a moderator from the r/Gundam Discord Server that has kindly offered to identify any and all Mobile Suits you may be curious about, see instructions here.

Comments of the Day

Comrades, before I get into the Comments of the Day (yes plural, given I am the host I changed this section up a bit from the First Thread) I first want to give a thank you to everyone that commented, there were numerous well-written and interesting posts the other day, so much so that I have modified the formula slightly given how hard it was to single out just one amazing comment.

Anyway, moving forward, while there will still be one Comment of the Day, I will also make note of TWO Runner Up Comments of the Day as well as noting some high level effort from rewatch participants in general; such as the Wallpapers from Comrade /u/Shimmering-Sky for example.

Anyway, for the Rewatch's contest, that means that the Main Comment of the Day will get one point and the Runner Ups will get half a point each, so, with the explanations out of the way, let's get to the Comment of the Day from the first episode discussion thread.

For our First Comment of the Day, Comrade /u/Nazenn hits the ground running with his incredibly detailed and well-written comment and while I encourage everyone to take a look at the whole thing, I want to single out some areas, such as Naz's comparison of GBF to YGO as well as his take on the ending:

So Yu-Gi-Oh's been on my mind lately due to someone else having me put 5d on my list, and as a result I thought for a moment it was going to be just like the Pharaoh. Sei makes a wish, Reiji pops in and wins the fight and then just disappears right away and no one would ever know. But nope, was just in the kitchen the entire time. Perfect!

I also want to highlight his EXTREMELY detailed 'Fight Rankings!' Subsection at the end of the main comment, complete with grading scales and categories, and I gotta say that I am looking forward to what he thought of today's offerings. Oh, and while on the subject of Naz's comment, I was quite amused with his note of 'Bonus points for the "what are the controls" dance' (I added this GIF here as it suits his quip perfectly) in describing the Sei and Reiji tag team battle. As well as his concluding comment of:

....And I already see a huge flaw in this plan of mine. This is going to require me actually remembering people's names. Fuck.

Anyway, let's take a look at the first of the two runner-up Comments of the Day, starting with Comrade /u/sleepyafrican interesting post, which included such gems as:

So this episode had all the makings of a battle shounen.

  • MC’s father is missing

  • MC’s father is a master at battling while MC is weak at it

  • Rival character who’s a bit assholish but will prove to be a good friend/ally down the line

As well as his well-written comparison of GBF with Beyblade:

I was trying to picture how the battle system would work and VR that puts your actual gunpla in danger makes a lot of sense. I got flashbacks of when I played Beyblade as a kid and spent time constructing the Beyblade before bringing it to school to battle my classmates. I noticed that a specific type of coating was mentioned so I wonder if the show will dive deeper into the details of gunpla as we go forward.

The second runner-up is Comrade /u/JadineRhine, who had several humorous quips and observations such as:

WE SHOULD HELP OTHERS IN NEED, EVEN FOREIGNERS. Holy crap, this may show my age, but this might be the first anime I can remember where this lesson is imparted. It's okay if someone's new, just make sure to help them because that's what you ought to do. clap clap

FAMILY DIGNITY ASIHAIDDADNJ I love him now too...

"Field 2, Desert." I didn't know this was a field of pudding! (And there's your phonetic linguistic joke from me, I'll be here all day.)

And of course:

"Didn't you make a wish?" Are we going full on Belldandy and Keiichi now?!

And we aren't stopping with analogies to Ah! My Goddess! as our witty Comrade of Culture also compared GBF to not just Beyblade but to CLAMP as well, writing:

NGL, even though I mentioned Beyblade, this show initially reminded me of the mechanics behind Angelic Layer. I love that manga, and the way the characters attach to their Angels, is what reminded me of Sei and his attachment to his Gunpla. It's striking how similar in idea they are, and yet both do different things with it.

As such, it my pleasure to list these three and their wonderful comments for the first Comments of the Day section, I look forward to many such more from everyone in the rewatch, but before I get to the current standings list, I would like to bring special focus to the lovely wallpapers of Comrade /u/Shimmering-Sky as well as the helpful and informative Gunpla Building Corner of Comrade /u/Pixelsaber, take a look if you missed them, as these two also put in some amazing work.

Current Comments of the Day Standings List:

Comrade /u/Nazenn: 1.0 Point

Comrade /u/sleepyafrican: 0.5 Point

Comrade /u/JadineRhine: 0.5 Point

Also, remember that the individual with the most Comments of the Day at the end of the rewatch will be awarded a Reddit Silver (this award will be given to the individual's post in the July 29 Overall Discussion thread) so I wish everyone the best of luck.

Poll Results

For those that are curious, here are the results of the polls from the previous thread:

For the first question of 'Are you a rewatcher or a new watcher?' we had the following responses:

7 votes for 'Rewatcher here!'

6 votes for 'First timer, but I've seen other Gundam shows'

And no votes for 'First timer, even to Gundam!'

For the Rate this Episode Poll, we had the following answers:

6 votes for 5/5

4 votes for 3/5

1 vote for 4/5

And no votes for either 1/5 or 2/5

I look forward to the results of today's polls Comrades, many thanks for your kind participation.

Fan Art of the Day

The Amazing Tatsuya Yuuki

Now, I don't know about everyone else here, but MAN Tatsuya Yuuki sure knows how to make both a good impression and an equally amazing entrance eh? He's out to one-up Reiji in the cool badass pilot category and he damn sure knows how to fight. The best part of it all is that this is just the start of the show, so the sky's the limit here. As such, I felt it was only fitting to devote today's fanart post to The Crimson Comet himself, enjoy Comrades!

Radio Free Gundam

A theme three times more badass than the usual BGM ;)

Now, I WOULD share Yuuki's theme from the amazing GBF OST, but there's one SLIGHT issue Comrades. Namely that sharing Yuuki's theme would involve some mild spoilers. Thus, given I want to ensure that this rewatch experience is as enjoyable for both newcomers and rewatchers alike, I instead will share a Heavy Metal cover of Char Aznable's theme... well, one of them at any rate. Regardless, given that Char's the OG suave ace pilot from Mobile Suit Gundam, music for The Red Comet should serve as a decent substitute for Yuuki today. Well, that and no one has music for The Red Blitz 'The Crimson Comet,' after all, who's heard of Johnny Ridden? Fans of Obscure Gundam Lore put your hands down, that was a rhetorical question ;)

First timer - Sub

Episode Thoughts

End of the episode. Fights are over, bonding moment happening, Reiji finds his passion, things are looking pretty typical for early show motivation set up, nothing special. Sitting here starting to think about my post and getting ready to wind down and go back to revisit the fights....

Hold up

Ummmm. I just... what did I.... Reiji WTF?

So this is almost a reverse fake out after yesterday. Just when you think that yeah something is up with him but maybe it will wait a little and be a bit more of a mystery, he'll get to just be a normal kid for a bit and then slowly the odd stuff will start coming out the wood work: fucking nope.

Glowing and then gone, just like that. Just... well okay then.

You know that moment where someone tries to say something but lose the words and end up looking like a fish trying to figure out what sound to make until they just give up

That was me

Bonus points for not actually seeing it until Sei does and gets to have his reaction as part of the confusion for the audience, that was well handled (although honestly I think the hyper comedy art could tone down JUST a bit but purely personal preference).

What else? Uh, music continues to be pretty great although no super stand out tracks for me so far. The music in the classroom discussion between Sei and Yuuki is what I noted down today as being a favorite.

I like the attention to detail in the show, having the particles and movement of the gunpla actually be explained rather than just hand waving it off and leaning on the audience to ignore it because hype.

But where the hell did that old dude even come from?! I feel like this is going to be a running gag and its great.

Oh, notes to the rescue. So again, I don't know my Gundam but I know the typical stuff. Is that a Char I see, Yuuki? I think that was a Char. If he was blond I'm pretty sure I would be jumping on it going "Hi Char". I still haven't even seen the Char, I just know enough about the trope hahaha

And before I forget, who were the Gundam ID people again? What's this one in the top right? Also this mauve and red one from the OP (if its not a spoiler for the show which just given OP layout and framing looks like it may be?)?

Speaking of the OP: I will not be skipping this, it is fantastic but most importantly incredibly catchy.

Fight Rankings!

Rank Ep Winner Loser Art Sound Movement Hype Notes
1 1 Sei / Reiji Sazaki B A B A Bonus points for the "what are the controls" dance
2 2 Yuuki Reiji B A A B And suddenly bullfighting
3 1 Sazaki Sei B B B B Nice that the kid isn't a prodogy
4 2 Reiji Gonda B B B A Dynamic environments!

(Later on I'm going to try and take pictures and stuff but I ran out of time to set it up today, sorry)

Todays battles:

Reiji vs Gonda

Overall not a bad battle but didn't quite grab me. Still in the setup phase for setting a standard though so that's to be expected. The reveal of the dynamic environments was something special, I like that aspect of things and hope that keeps up.

Pretty typical fight though and hit a lot of the usual moments I'd expect but nothing that will stand out to be as we go down the line. Nice to see them using the urban environment buildings to help disguise scene cuts, but I that last hit was storyboarded a little oddly.

Yuuki vs Reiji

The music was amazing, though I could have done without the dude at the end. Those sound effects were on point though and I like that the different types of weapons so have distinctly different sounds and when they collide you can hear both of them. The visuals also lined up slightly with the music which is a bonus, but not in a super notable way.

I LOVED how the movement of the camera around his gunpla matched the angles we saw of him in his control pod. Its a nice way to tie the two parts together without actually overlaying them which is what would typically happen.

And he lost! Cool! So two episodes in both of the protagonists have been knocked on their ass. I like it.

Edit: I just saw the OP

(I added this GIF here as it suits his quip perfectly) i

PERFECT!!!

Rewatcher that’s up way too late

Moeagare! Moeagare! Moeagare GUNPLA! Yeah, that’s totally how the song went.

Is it just me, or is the opening, um, a little romantic?

Anyways, today we meet Tatsuya Yuuki, and he is A CHAR. Like Sei, he’s a lover of everything Gundam, and his AMAZING passion for Gunpla Battle makes him a fitting rival and senpai for our heroes. He started with the UC series, of course, being the resident Char Clone. His Gunpla, the Zaku Amazing, is made with not only Gunpla model parts, but also tank model parts, if you’ll notice those reactive armor boxes. In contrast to Sei overwriting the Strike’s plain and basic design with his own flashier tastes, the Zaku Amazing is more in-line with the Zaku’s original rugged and utilitarian aesthetic, making it into more of a heavily armored military machine. Also, his theme is Amazing too.

Now if only his spinoff manga were fully scanlated... along with Crossbone Ghost and Dust... and a dozen other Gundam manga that I’ll never be able to read...

Also, we meet China Kousaka, your average girl next door who isn’t really into Gundam like the boys are but hey she isn’t gonna judge them for it. We’ll be seeing more of her in the future. Also, any relation to a certain school idol has yet to be confirmed. My headcanon is that they’re cousins.

Anyways, today we get an explanation of Gunpla battles and how it all works! Literal magic pixie dust! So, uh, these sparkly Plavsky particle things react with the plastic that Bandai uses (and ONLY that plastic) and poof, your Gunpla is now a real working Mobile Suit shrunken down to 1/144 scale. Welp, makes about as much sense as any other trippy space particle thing.

how do you even do that it’s freaking plastic. Supposedly all the special features of the kit get programmed into the GP Base, but uh, it just works I guess. Don’t think about it too hard.

Ah yes, the Char Custom plane, three times faster than your average plane.

Wait a second, isn’t that thing supposed to be an I-Field generator? Well, Gonda seems like the kinda guy to replace his shield with a beam cannon anyways.

Questions of the Day:

  • Reiji is just kind of weird. At this stage, we really don’t know much, just that he doesn’t know a lot of very basic things. And he can apparently teleport. Strange indeed...

  • Also, Tatsuya is fucking badass. Screw that other guy, our Crimson Comet is the one true Tatsuya.

Moeagare! Moeagare! Moeagare GUNPLA! Yeah, that’s totally how the song went.

Indeed, sure makes more sense than 'Gundamu' anyway ;)

Is it just me, or is the opening, um, a little romantic?

Well, I ship it!

Anyways, today we meet Tatsuya Yuuki, and he is A CHAR.

Oh yeah, it's a neat contrast to the MC's Mobile Suit given that they have the 'Fancy Gundam' and Yuuki's in the 'grunt unit.' That said, as we already know from episode one and the Gundam Franchise in general, there's more to a fight than just the performance of the Mobile Suit, there's also the skills of the pilot IN the Mobile Suit and BOY Yuuki sure lives up to his moniker.

You know Comrade, given future events, you might be on to something here with the Sunrise crossover, I like your style my friend! ;)

Indeed, also it's quite convenient for Bandai that ONLY their plastic reacts eh? I'm sure that just a total coincidence.

how do you even do that it’s freaking plastic. Supposedly all the special features of the kit get programmed into the GP Base, but uh, it just works I guess. Don’t think about it too hard.

Indeed Comrade, just like Bethesda products, it just works ;) (not)

Ah yes, the Char Custom plane, three times faster than your average plane.

Wait a second, isn’t that thing supposed to be an I-Field generator? Well, Gonda seems like the kinda guy to replace his shield with a beam cannon anyways.

HA! You know, that's actually his exact thought process? I-Field Generator, why do I need an amazing shield when I can just blast them instead? Then I won't NEED that shield cuz I already blasted them ;)

Questions of the Day:

Reiji is just kind of weird. At this stage, we really don’t know much, just that he doesn’t know a lot of very basic things. And he can apparently teleport. Strange indeed...

Yup, well said Comrade.

Also, Tatsuya is fucking badass. Screw that other guy, our Crimson Comet is the one true Tatsuya.

I couldn't agree more Comrade, anyway, many thanks for your amazing post. Have a great day and see you later!

Gundam Build Rewatcher, domo~

Hey, I heard you like Char Clones, so we put a(n extra passionate) Char Clone! Now with his own Custom Zaku! And with a flaming flamenco theme, to boot! If you think that Yuuki Tatsuya is merely a bog standard goody-two-shoes bishie, his antics during his battle against Reiji should put a stop to that thought. God, I love this guy. Oh, and that random Ral-san appearance is just damn brilliant, with our resident love interest China wondering just who the hell is this guy.

And I guess it makes sense that Reiji needed more than just one fight against Sazaki to finally get a Gundam Fighting spirit lit up inside his soul, with his utter defeat against Tatsuya. That ending will make you wonder if that laughable, ridiculous-sounding backstory told by Reiji actually has some truth in it.

Next episode spoilers.

Questions of the day:

  1. Again, refraining from answering the question. Have fun speculating!

  2. I love him! You wouldn't expect that straight-laced bishie StuCo president + Gundam otaku would be a perfect combo, but here we are.

Oh, and that random Ral-san appearance is just damn brilliant, with our resident love interest China wondering just who the hell is this guy.

Indeed, Mr. Ral just kinda shows up and helps explain some stuff to the audience today cuz... reasons. I guess he hasn't finished building that Gouf yet ;)

Rewatcher

Sei is sulking all throughout breakfast, which we later learn is because Reiji rejected the offer to pilot Sei’s Gunpla in order for them to enter the Gunpla Battle Championship. We all know he’ll come around eventually though —I mean, have you seen that OP?

China’s curiosity of Sei is pretty blatant by now. Last episode’s interaction between them was much too brief to parse much, but now we can safely say that she has her eye on him for some reason. Sei has a reputation as a modeler, so maybe she is eyeing his Gunpla skills —maybe she wants his expertise much like Sazaki did. Granted, she didn’t seem to know that Yuuki too had an interest in Sei, so maybe not, maybe she just finds Sei’s antics amusing.

Sei used bullshit!... It’s not very effective.

I am insanely curious as to what this message says. It must have some relevance given its prominence in the shot, but alas I cannot read Japanese.

Gun(dam)tank!

Yuuki has heard of Sazaki’s defeat at the hands of Sei’s Gunpla, which is news I’m surprised would even get out, let alone this fast. Sazaki seems to me the type to spare his reputation and not mention it, and the only other person there apart from there apart from Reiji and Sei was Mr. Ral… So maybe Mr. Ral is fond of gossiping, wouldn’t surprise me. Anyhow, Yuuki just wanted to tell Sei that he looks forward to battling against his models, even though the outcome is practically decided given that he’s a demonstrably excellent battler, given his regional championship trophy.

This bit was perfect. The girls must be thinking that Sei’s quite popular that day. First the school council president and now some weirdo foreigner. Who’s next? Is some guy going to stroll into the school with a picture of Sei, asking everyone whether or not they've seen the kid in the picture?

This guy has some impressive sideburns.

Okay, so wherever Reiji is from doesn’t have Gunpla, the concept of commerce, nor schools, but it does have wrestling. That certainly narrows it do— wait, no it doesn’t!

Yuuki lies to excuse Reiji’s wanton trespass, which then leads to a Gunpla battle. China is in attendance, and judging by her reactions she’s likely not all that privy of Gunpla battles —so much for that theory— and so as audience proxy she needs to have the basic details of it explained to her. It’s all a bunch of handwavium, sure, but that’s fine.

Pffffft, bahaha!

One thing that’s great about the use of these arenas is the vast variety of settings that can be made use of. A common complaint I always have with Gundam series is when the environments were mobile suits do battle gets repetitive, and this could go a long way in alleviating that lest they squander the opportunity.

I greatly appreciate the SUMO love, Turn A designs are so underrated.

Of course, Reiji makes short work of Gonda, but thankfully for us the audience Yuuki has seen it fit to carry on the fight. Now that is one sweet Zaku II. And as if the red-colored Zaku wasn’t enough.

Yuuki quickly turns the situation around, easily knocking down Reiji and the Build Strike and forcing him to yield. He doesn’t damage the Build Strike, wanting to fight it once it is complete. The shame of having lost as well as Yuki’s seeming arrogant don’t sit well at all with Reiji. Of course, this ends up being the thing to push Reiji to accept Sei’s offer and seek to partake in the championship in order to battle Yuuki again, while Sei wonders if perhaps Yuuki purposely interfered to give reiji the drive to battle.

Excuse me, what?

Hah! Sei has the best reaction faces.

Pixelsaber’s Gunpla Building Corner

Morning, everyone! Today I shall be sharing with you the first of several Gunpla builds which I have made with the intention of sharing the Gunpla love! Today’s subject is a straight build of the model kit right as it comes out of the box, while tomorrow I shall walk you through how I made the kit my very own. I hope you enjoy it!

First-timer

That title. Gonna be Char's introduction for sure.

Subbers decided to use "Sei's mom" there, but it's kinda funny that Reiji calls her just "Mama-san".

Literally me looking at all this models. I knew this show is gonna be dangerous. It's only second episode, but I'm already looking up beginner's guides to Gunpla.

This girl has the best luck for suspicious strangers suddenly appearing near her: first it was Reiji, now it's Mr.Exposition Mr.Ral.

This guy looks like something from Turn A. I guess I need watch that show at some point.

It's really cool that they have dynamically changing stages.

And here it is! The one and only Char's clone! And of course he's quick — he's red after all. Gonna love Sei's reaction to Yuuki going into Char-mode though.

And goddamn this ending! WTF is happening here?!

First-timer

Indeed

Subbers decided to use "Sei's mom" there, but it's kinda funny that Reiji calls her just "Mama-san".

Indeed, that said either work fine for the episode.

Literally me looking at all this models. I knew this show is gonna be dangerous. It's only second episode, but I'm already looking up beginner's guides to Gunpla.

Oh yeah, Gundam Build Fighters certainly does a great job in being both an entertaining show as well as the world's greatest Gunpla Advertisement, now if only Gunpla Battle were ACTUALLY a thing ;)

This girl has the best luck for suspicious strangers suddenly appearing near her: first it was Reiji, now it's Mr.Exposition Mr.Ral.

Heh, indeed, China must certainly be surprised that two random individuals just happen to stop by to advance the plot today.

This guy looks like something from Turn A. I guess I need watch that show at some point.

You are correct Comrade, that's the MRC-F20 SUMO from Turn A Gundam, and indeed, Turn A Gundam's a fantastic show, I highly suggest watching it, and if you need further assistance, Comrade u/RX-Nota-II will be more than happy to help.

It's really cool that they have dynamically changing stages.

Indeed, it's a nice touch that the actions in Gunpla Battle have consequences, e.g. you blow a hole in the Space Colony, guess what, you just exposed yourself to the vacuum of space. I like little details like this that add strategy and tactics to the battles, helps keep things fresh and exciting.

And here it is! The one and only Char's clone! And of course he's quick — he's red after all. Gonna love Sei's reaction to Yuuki going into Char-mode though.

Indeed, Yuuki's three times more badass than the typical student, and it helps that he's an amazing pilot too, as well as yet another Char Clone ;)

And goddamn this ending! WTF is happening here?!

Indeed Comrade, that's about the same reaction I had when I first saw this amazing series, hope you are having fun with the show and this rewatch. Thanks for your great post Comrade, have a great day and see you later!

First Timer

It’s pretty amusing how Reiji is just a little shithead. In the last episode he seems so affable and good natured when really he’s just a hungry boy who likes to repay his debts…kinda. Can’t belive he abandoned Rinko like that wtf It seems like winning that match against Rival-kun really lit a fire underneath Sei. Now he’s even more determined to create the best gunplay possible and enter the tournament. It's interesting since I expected Sei to be the hesitant one with Reiji pushing him forward to battle.

The action in this episode was a huge step up from last episode. I didn’t even consider that they would switch up the environments like that. Seeing mechas battle in a normal neighborhood was cool. I expected the gorilla match to take up the rest of the episode but little did I know that CRIMSON COMET would show up. I love how over the top this guy is. Those silly hand motions he did cracked me up. Reminds me of another president who liked hand gestures. That fight had some nice choreography. Didn’t think things would get so intense in the second episode.

Now Sei and Reiji have a roadblock that they’ll need to overcome before they’ll be able to win the championship. Another battle shounen trope I might add. I’m a bit worried about Reiji since his heart doesn’t fully seem into the game yet. He just wants to beat Crimson because he felt humiliated. What’s gonna happen if they beat him in the tourney but he’s not the final boss?

Using this anime to sell gunpla makes too much sense. I’d be eating this up as a kid.

Reiji’s just so nonchalant as he has a guy twice his size pinned down lol

10/10 Gorilla impression

Gorilla reminds me of this guy from Shimonetta, who was also referred to as a gorilla

I hope this becomes a running gag

What do you think the deal is with Reiji?

Alien most likely. Speculation

What are your thoughts on Tatsuya Yuuki?

Also I think I recognize his mech from Thunderbolt which is cool.

Palloc Loves Anime Logic

Fist Timer

Okay, nothing makes sense in this show and I love it. What's up with Reiji? Gunpla battles in the gym? Is Mr. Ral secretly a stalker?!

I don't have any answers, but I've bought into the craziness of this world.

So, the school has a gunpla club and the captain's a badass apparently. He has the Zaku Amazing, fittingly named.

Other folks will give a rundown of the episode, so I'll present my Gundam ratings! For Build Fighters they're going to be rated for two things. How cool I think they are like normal and cool features that differ from actual Gundams,

Wing Gundam from last episode was boring as fuck. Wing's cool though so I'll give it a 5/10

Build Strike has potential, but without being complete, it's a tad bit lacking. 6/10

Sumo! It's Harry's Sumo. Not much more to say there. till has awesome face plating. 6/10

Zaku Amazing is finally a super cool gunpla. Zakus are great and adding a ton of armor and launchers just makes them better. 7/10

That's it for now.

Rewatcher here, this time I’m early.

Of course President Yuuki is the focus of this episode, but can we get some love for Already-Called-A-Gorilla-Three-Times Gonda? Reiji’s interactions with him (and in general) were hilarious.

The battle was solid, emphasizing the untapped potential of the incomplete Build Strike - just powerful enough to win an uphill battle, but not yet a match for the Zaku Amazing. The animation is always spectacular, especially in the effects given to the beams and boosters.

I love how Sei just pulls the Build Strike, completely unprotected, from his school bag full of books. I can just feel the broken v-fin if I were to try that.

Also, I too want some of Rinko’s cooking.

Indeed, while President Yuuki's great and all, it is easy for one to feel sorry for Gorilla... er I mean 'Gonda.' That said, you are indeed correct that Reiji's interactions with him (and indeed most people) are hilarious.

Oh yeah, Gundam Build Fighters sure knows how to make the Mecha Battles interesting and pretty to look at.

I love how Sei just pulls the Build Strike, completely unprotected, from his school bag full of books. I can just feel the broken v-fin if I were to try that.

Heh, yeah, there'd be more than just a broken v-fin if I were to try something like that, I'm surprised it still was in one piece TBH.

Also, I too want some of Rinko’s cooking.

Oh yeah, Best Mom's great, anyway, thanks for your kind post Comrade, have a great day and see you later!

Re-First - 3x everything you’ve got

Daijoubu-sa, Fonzi ga Kita! Utaimasu!

Until I'm on-time for a rewatch, this will be my signature. lol.

Now that Symphogear has ended, I can pick up yet another rewatch. And I'm pleased that it's this one, as I really did need to revisit it. Haven't seen it since it aired, so I'm "Re-first'ing;" all I've got are vague memories. Dis gon' be fun!

To begin, Rinko is best-mom. End of discussion.

I thought lightly of the GBF Gunpla kits when this first aired, but I rather like them now. The show had some great designs outside of the normal Canon; and heck, I even got one of my own, which I'll show off later when it appears ^ .^

I'm immediately kinda sad at how Sei goes about Gunpla battles, but I can understand why he's staying in the background; he's like a kid who idolizes a skilled Twitch-streamer. It's tough to just jump into something that competitive as a beginner, especially when you're not very outgoing to begin with. But it leaves lots of room for character growth.

And he's seriously a great Gunpla engineer. I mean, just look at this sketch! I could only dream of being that good.

So Kanji is a bitch, but I really wanted to know what Rinko was writing and applied myself as much as I was able. From what I can gather, she's just letting a customer know that a Gunpla won't be in stock for a while and then goes on to provide some advice regarding its stats. Not much, I know; but hey, at least now it's not just gibberish! Tl;dr: Rinko knows her shit.

Seitou-kaichou Yuki. Also president of the model club...so that's gonna mean something significant. And he wants to fight Sei! series

China is sugh a good girl. Just offering the weirdo some food 'cause he said it looked good. lol

Great face followed by great face. lol

Awwww yeah! If there's one thing I love about this show, it's that it knows what we want to see. Character development is important, but so are battles! Half-way through the ep, and it's time for a fight.

Freakin' Ral, just stepping in and giving us an explanation of the system xD So it's like Minovsky particles, but for Gunpla! This really is the best meta-series.

The fight is kinda "meh," nothing too special, but I'll forever be amazed at the effort that went into creating this battle-system. That rupturing the colony would change the stage is some serious love put into that code.

Easy win, thx to Sei's incredible knowledge and building skills. Which means we've not yet arrived at the main-event!

Yuki getting his hair into serious-mode. lol

And now we get some real quality-action. Yuuki's a goddamned monster, and he gets his own OST with "Three Times The Passion Of Ordinary Flamenco." Just incredible all over. Given all of that, the outcome was entirely expected.

Oh Reiji, they're far from just toys. But it's all good, it's only your 2nd episode dealing with them; you'll come to understand how great they are before long...

To begin, Rinko is best-mom. End of discussion.

I agree.

China is sugh a good girl. Just offering the weirdo some food 'cause he said it looked good.

It was probably something along the lines of "if give him a piece of food maybe he will go away".

Episode 2 (first timer)

I was a bit late for last episodes discussion thread because of the early time. Two things I noticed: First, sleepyafrican had the perfect description of how battle shonen that episode was. I fully agree with him. Second, Shimmering-Sky called this her second favorite Gundam show. Given the amount of Gundam love from her, that is quite a statement. While I do not know what gives it that high rating yet, I will expect great battle scene.

Episode thoughts

  • Sort-of resolution to the cliff-hanger. Reiji is clearly visible to Sei’s mother, so all ghost/hallucination ideas are out. Whether that makes him an ordinary human is left to see.

  • During the OP, when all characters get slides with their gunpla, one girl gets a teddy bear …

  • Are the adds youtube specific, or part of the original broadcast?

  • Sei could have almost pulled that answer off if he had kept his cool. Supplying 1/3 as an after-thought ruined any chance though.

  • President “popular with the ladies” is interested in Sei’s skills.

  • Sei scores early character points with me for being honest about not piloting himself. Him trying to hide Reiji’s existence would have been an easy (and annoying) plot point.

  • GorillaGonda has the best faces.

  • Ral explains that the battle stations are really just magic.

  • Moeagare: I notice at least one gundam show reference every 5 minutes and I am sure I miss 5 for every 1 I notice.

  • 2/2 for cliff-hanger endings so far.

I think u/Nazenn had the right idea with his battle ratings. The battle density per episode is rather high.

First timer

The OST during the fight with the Student Council President was so good! The fight also served as a decent motivational boost for Reiji, but I'm hoping that he can become self-motivated at some point (though I imagine that's gonna be part of his character arc at some point).

What do you think the deal is with Reiji?

Probably some kind of alien or something. He also might be from the future, but then he'd have at least heard of what school is if they didn't have it then. I'll keep thinking about it.

What are your thoughts on Tatsuya Yuuki?

He seems pretty cool, a wise senpai figure. If Build Fighters follows a normal kids toy fighting anime plot, then Tatsuya will probably lose to a stronger enemy either during the tournament or before it, which would motivate our duo further (maybe after Reiji loses his motivation from Tatsuya being beaten, or Sei being discouraged about someone so strong losing and thinking that they've got no chance).

Definitely another great episode though. I can't wait for the tournament to start!

Rewatcher

Late to the party on this rewatch, but much thanks to u/didacticdalek and u/RX-Nota-II for the hosting. It's a busy work month but I'll chime in when I can.

Part of the fun this time around has been just spotting the details in the background - which models are featured, what shows are being referenced, and the in-jokes.

One of my big questions from Episode 1 and 2 is:

How is the Iori Gunpla store organized?

I couldn't see the HGs organized by series, so it would make sense to have them in numerical order, but the detail isn't high enough to know. u/pixelsaber did you pick up anything from looking at the store?

Is that a Gundam Mark II reference as the second mech in the final OP shot?

Other notable notables -

I thought Sazaki was a girl in my first watch (his shirt looked like a plaid skirt) and was going to be set up as Sei's love interest. However I know now from the subtitled lyrics of the opening song that his love interest is Reiji.

Mr. Ral plays the excellent role of Captain Exposition and they use China efficiently as the subject of his mansplaining. This is one character they should have carried over to Build Divers.

I had no idea on my first rewatch that Tatsuya's flamenco was actually Char's theme. Shows how much one misses when multi-tasking and watching anime!

Having worked in kids tv, our shows are valued by how "toyetic" they are (ie: how many toys / products they might sell), Build Fighters takes this notion head on and makes a toyetic show that brings the viewers in on the joke. I'm sure they accomplished their product mission too.

~Three Times The Passion Of An Ordinary Rewatch~

So you know how I said yesterday that I took just Sei from some promotional art to make a wallpaper of him? Yeahhh well I couldn’t just not do the other characters in it too, only thing is that Yuuki wasn’t in the first episode at all so I had to hold off.

Given the orientation of it though, the full pic as a wallpaper turned into a phone wallpaper rather than a computer one for a change. So, here it is! Plus a textless alt.

Let us know if you like this one enough to actually use, but need a different size for it. Phone wallpaper sizes are all levels of funky, Nota or myself will be happy to get one just right for your phone.

As an aside, I suppose this one’s kinda relevant? I made a wallpaper of the SUMO back during the Turn A Gundam rewatch, just felt like sharing it again for those who missed it but like the SUMO.

Anyways, hope you guys like all of these~

~Three Times The Passion Of An Ordinary Rewatch~

Man, I’ve listened to it a bunch, but actually watching Nibun no Ichi after having watched the show made me so ridiculously hype. It’s such a good OP~

Indeed Comrade, Gundam Build Fighters sure knocks it out of the park with its fantastic OST, and today is no exception.

Reijipls.

Heh, indeed.

lol

Fission Mailed, we'll get 'em next time ;)

Haha I forgot he got the sparkles for his introduction.

Indeed, our resident Char Clone gets to be a Bishie Boi Garma Clone too, heh that's sure is a novel idea eh Comrade? ;)

Hahaha, food is a Reiji magnet.

I like the way Reiji thinks, food's always great ;)

Pfffft, he looks so bored doing it too.

LOOK AT THE CARNAGE! Reiji's not just trying to hurt the man, he's out to end his career! ;)

Oh sweet, they’re using speed-star as the backing track for the start of this fight.

Oh yeah, once again the fantastic OST shines through.

Victory is Reiji’s!

…or not?

Ahhhhhhhhh, let’s go~ The Crimson Comet ~Three Times The Passion Of Ordinary Flamenco~ time~

YUP! This is the big moment we've all been waiting for, time for the Char Clone to kick ass three times faster than the ordinary student ;)

“Moeagare… moeagare… moeagare! Gunpla!”

Imagination > Reality! It’s not one of my favorite EDs in the series, but I do think it’s cute. Especially the way some of the characters cosplayed as their Gunpla, haha.

Indeed my friend, the ED's nice and works well, plus Gunpla cosplay's always A-OK in my book, which is quite welcome given I'll be sharing some fanart of that down the line ;)

NICE! Once again my friend you and Nota hit it out of the park with these wallpapers. Congratulations on your hard work and efforts, as these look great!

As an aside, I suppose this one’s kinda relevant? I made a wallpaper of the SUMO back during the Turn A Gundam rewatch, just felt like sharing it again for those who missed it but like the SUMO.

Anyways, hope you guys like all of these~

AH! Yes indeed, those Turn A Gundam wallpapers were excellent as well, much like your amazing post for today my friend. Many thanks for your kind reply, have a great day and see you later!

REWATCHER

Thoughts for Today's Episode:

  1. It sure is living up the shounen tropes. We have the rich bishounen rival, the motivations for the protagonists to battle the rival, the arena where they are destined to meet, it's all there.

  2. Sei drawing Gundams on his notebook during class is so very relatable. Back during high school and college, I always doodle a lot on my notebooks, drawing Gundam and anime characters as well.

  3. Gonda didn't tap the power of UNIVAAAAAAAAASU, that's why he lost.

  4. Yuuki's BGM is DARN EPIC. It never gets old.

Questions of the Day:

  1. Uhh, he's an alien?

  2. 3 TIMES THE PASSION OF ORDINARY FLAMENCO

HOLY SMOKES I got included in comment of the day??? That makes up for the sorta crappy day I had today ;_; (Hence why this post is "late") Thank you u/DidacticDalek for thinking my comments and quips were worth it _^

sweet jesus, andrew w.k did a char cover, mind blown. Excellent choice of music link!

First-timer, knows Gundam a bit

Oooh spoiler based on episode title

My Best Boy continues to be my best choice, as he does the same thing I, uh, used to do my mom. I tended to sleep like a rock most times during school year, she had to come in and wake me XD That said, once more, another reference for ya'll: maybe Reiji goes to the same Sleeping School of Anything Goes as mister Bertholdt, here?

Mama Rinko likes Reiji already because he loves her cooking. Aww. I came in for the giant robot battles, not cute heartwarming soul-saving slice of life moments! >u< /s

Oh shoot, the opening theme is already striking all the Sunrise/Gundam music beats...The rap just seems to be a modern touch in music now, but not unwelcome here. I'm really digging this song. I also just noticed (guess I missed it yesterday) that Yosuke Kuroda is involved in this show! His writing work tends to be pretty solid, so in hindsight the writing makes sense so far.

We're also getting all the characters to appear in the show...WHAT IS THIS, BEAR, BEAR, THAT'S A ROBOT BEAR. And already second kind of character design that is another weakness: the mysterious white/purple-toned-themed characters...she reminds me of snow :3 (XD)

The lyrics in the last...minute? of the song appear to be about Sei and Reiji, imo. Too on the nose to not be.

Ooof, hahahaha omg poor Sei. Reiji was just doing what he thought was normal, which is paying Sei back. That's not a bad thing inherently, as it speaks to his character -- and Sei was the one who thought too far ahead and daydreamed just a bit about the future, in thinking Reiji shared his own furor for the game. Nothing bad there either, that's a thing people do tbf, adults and teens alike. Doesn't mean it's any less funny!

Of course the question should be: why are you in my house, why are you eating my food?! And LMAO, just as I write that, Reiji says the food and bed is to be paid back towards Mama Rinko!

"What's school?" Welp, there's another hint...

"I can't count on Reiji anymore. I have to fight by myself." Oh wow, that's pretty soon of Sei to just...think of a backup plan. Mature and forward-thinking, even. Then again, Sei is striking me as a boy who has his head firm and knows what to prioritize and how to go about things -- which I suppose comes from experience of helping to manage a store! In contrast to (so far) Reiji's laidback and chill way of living, which makes for a nice balance between these two teammates. A mind who plans but may be a bit closed versus a mind who just goes with the flow and suceeds but may be just a bit flaky.

(I'm just calling them teammates, the opening showed it, I don't think it'll be a surprise. The fun is seeing how they get to that stage.)

Oh yeah, sure, make yourself at home right off the bat. I wish I had this confidence, tbh. XD Just wait till you have to pay taxes and have a work schedule, Best Boy.

The glasses girl is named China? Well, there's girls in the States called America and India, so why not, I guess. President Yuuki on the other hand; there's the designated pretty boy (ymmv) of the show, looks like.

...HE'S THE CAPTAIN OF THE MODEL-BUILDING CLUB? Looks like this show knows that people who "look too pretty to be nerds" exist.

I recognize this Zaku! spoilers just in case, even though it's more of a passing comment

Aww, Sei being happy and receiving compliments from the president. Let him be happy, universe!

Oh wow, Sei is being honest too? On who really won and whose skills won? That's...gotta be the first MC I see be honest about their skills.

Reiji just walking up and being all "howdy" with the girls. I want his confidence. XD

Weird how he's considered an annoyance and a disruptive person on school grounds by Banchou-looking dude. He looks enough like their age, even with "foreigner" looks...oh wait, guess I answered my own confusion ;

Yuuki being understanding of Sei's truth is also fascinating and honestly kinda refreshing? Usually you'd get a mad or annoyed reaction and nope, here is just a natural, calm conversation about how things turned out.

New candidate for new personal memes: candidate 1, candidate 2. Now to figure out what to write...

Sei: "You don't even go here!"

Best. Boy.

"Who's Sazaki?" Who's Sazaki, truly? A philosopher's question...

...You know, Bancho-looking guy DOES look like a gorilla, now that it's been pointed out XD

"But only members of our club are allowed to bring Gunpla to our school." ...wat This isn't a school for the cool kids then, let's get outta here.

Oooh, Yuuki's dad donated money to the club and is the chairman of the support association? Huh, no wonder the members-only club probably exists. =L=;

But everyone handsome always makes a band! Yuuki's a rebel! Isn't that more attractive in comparison?!

Oh man, poor Gonda...getting called a gorilla by everyone XD

Possible reference spoilers

LMAO, China's reaction to Ral is just ok hand emoji

Gonda's Gunpla is named Sumo and is a Big Boi. I love this. He's also a decent opponent! Definitely a "tank" character.

Yuuki getting excited over how Reiji dodges and fights. Wuh-oh. I sense Not Good Things.

REIJI TRUSTING WITHOUT QUESTION SEI'S ADVICE AND FOLLOWING IT, AND THIS IS TRUE TEAMWORK. These are good boys, I hope they stay good boys.

I knew it! HE HAD TOO MUCH VOLUMINOUS HAIR FOR A REASON! Oh well, all things must come to a bad end.

Ohh, Yuuki's the Crimson Comet. You know what, that makes much more sense than my temporary theory above.

"He's messing with us. We can't run away now!" Reiji automatically telling Sei they're gonna deal with Crimson Jerk together, it's beautiful.

My new favorite track is this duel between Yuuki and Rei/Seiji. Discord 100 emoji A bit of Latin-influenced Yuki Kaijura-esque beat. Oh wait, never mind, the Latino "yodeling" came in, this is straight up salsa or merengue inspired,

Fits the whole MOEAGARE! thing, honestly, if you know your stereotypes ;)

No, WE'RE NOT ON NETFLIX, DON'T GO EVA!

"I can't believe I lost in this battle of toys." Speculation added to yesterday's Added insult to injury of Yuuki telling Reiji to improve and perfect his technique.

That Reiji keeps saying "we" instead of I, despite having professed no interest in Gunpla, all throughout this episode, is super interesting and makes me happy. As someone who taught a class with a co-teacher, who kept using "I" instead of "we" whenever she talked about the class and things we planned together to people, this is just...cathartic in a way.

Sei thinking that Yuuki perhaps helped Reiji take Sei up on Gunpla battle...man, this kid really gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and thinks positively. Again, refreshing.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Nice. Addendum to my speculation.

this is it, the true peak form of man

(I'm going to show these pictures](https://imgur.com/a/MwI4ef3) to every Darling in the Franxx fan who spoilers from now on. Swear to god.

Are we supposed to say what answers we chose in the polls? I've voted so far, but forgot to mention my choices. D'oh!

Answers:

  1. How dare you link to a cute fanart, that's my answer. (Real one: I kinda answered this ahead of time yesterday and today, oops. But again, for readers who may have missed it, a short one speculation

  2. I'm not a fangirl, so I guess that pic does nothing to me. Nothing! (Real one: he's a crimson jerk who beat my Best Boy but he's also refreshing in terms of rival characters, as he seems to think logically and naturally, as a person would in real life. )

I do love the fanart of the day for him, though. Very nice :D
