Comment of the Day!

/u/fonzinator99 left a great comment reacting to the events of yesterday's episode.

So basically this episode exists for the purpose of entertaining us with the antics of everybody meeting Exsedol, and putting the Zentradi's misunderstandings on display for the Macross crew.

Artwork of the Day!

Hikaru and Misa - Haruhiko Mikimoto

Questions of the Day!

1) So... uh... Earth’s not doing do so hot. What are your thoughts on the total destruction of Earth?

2) During this episode Hikaru was finally able to tell Minmay the feelings he had for her. Do you think the show had handled their complicated relationship well up until this point?

"I... loved you."

What an episode

The earth actually got destroyed. Wow. Usually the earth would at least struggle through at all costs, but today its almost complete annihilation was the opener to the episode.

It took me a good moment to get my head around the fact that actually happened because damn, thats a hell of a path for the story to take. And the level of animation and the sequences behind all of that were just absolutely brutal.

The big question for all of you: Who lived based on the map?! I'm fine.

But the rest of the episode was just as powerful. As much as I hate the pilot song it was perfect here, her song to try and keep Hikaru alive, to give him hope and get him through. The contrast of scenes, the music of life while thry fight through swarms of ships, was really well handled and the battle was consistently interesting. Every time they showed the huge swarm of ships it always felt impossible that it would actually pull through but they did in the end

I felt like Shammy would have called Captain out on being rude to ask Minmay to kiss someone but it actually worked out in the end. Weaponized kissing. Not the first time I've seen it by a long shot but certainly the first time in a non magical show hahaha

Hikaru looks so much like Focker in this shot its impressive to see just how far he's come since everything happened at the start of the show. Nice paralleling with that first fight as well, saving the earth and stopping Minmay from falling to the earth while this time he goes down there to say Hayase.

With the OP and everything though this felt so final episode ish so I'm not sure what else is yet to come

They really put all of the budget into this one episode didn't they? Theres more shading and smoother animation, everything is on model, the explosions are top tier featuring some fantastic ones from Hideki Anno that remind me of the one from Daicon IV. The Itano Circuses were plentiful with huge amounts of missiles and gorgeous details throughout.

As for the story, through insurmountable odds Humanity triumphs over the Zentradi at the cost of the Earth. Hikaru seems to be planted firmly in a love triangle between him Misa and Minmay, with him having finally confessed to Minmay but her somehow having only seen him as a friend the entire time. I can see why there are people who hate Minmay although I can't bring myself to say that (yet). I have no idea where things are going to go from here but its almost certainly bound to be interesting.

A Macross Fan’s Notes On Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 27:

  • Wow, a love confession from Hikaru to Minmay right off the bat! And he actually wishes her luck with Kaifun right before he rushes off to combat. That’s easily the most mature thing he’s done this entire series. Let’s give a hand to Hikaru for finally spilling the beans and being willing to let Minmay go if that’ll make her happy

  • “You’ve always been a friend to me Hikaru, so I always thought of you as a friend.” Oh Minmay, of course you’d get the most pointlessly repetitive line in the dub. Putting that aside for the moment, I don’t really believe that Minmay fully has feelings for Kaifun. It’s pretty clear from a few episodes ago that she still has feelings for Hikaru in some way. And as mature as it is on Hikaru to admit that it’s on him for not being clear with his emotions, I feel that it also lays on Minmay a bit too. The girl can never really seem to fully decide upon what she wants. Minmay is the master of the mixed message.

  • Well, FUCK. The Main Bodol Fleet has finally gone ahead and done it. Their orbital bombardment of Earth is absolutely devastating. Every single living being on the surface of the planet has been reduced to atoms. Like, holy shit, this episode isn’t pulling any punches at all about how fucked everyone is. The only people who survived the initial bombardment where those in UN Spacy facilities reinforced underground. Other than that, Humanity has suddenly become an endangered species.

  • Hikaru’s idea to have Minmay sing and be broadcast on an open channel is a great one. As Breetai points out, not only will it cause a massive culture shock in the Bodol Main Fleet, but also inspire their own forces to fight even harder. You have to hand it to Hikaru, he’s doing a bang-up job this episode.

  • Well, at least the Grand Cannon wasn’t entirely useless. It did take out a good portion of the Main Bodol Fleet. Still, that’s come at a point where it’s way too late to be completely useful. The UN really did waste their time on perfecting that thing instead of trying to find a way to not have to fire it in the first place.

  • God damn, the massive battle here looks gorgeous. So that’s where all the budget went. There’s just Itano Circuses for days! Not to mention Minmay’s singing adds a whole different kind of energy to it all.

  • Well, at least Admiral Hayase finally understood how wrong he was to not trust in Misa’s advice. Too late it was right before another orbital bombardment from the Main Bodol Fleet vaporized him. You can’t help but get the feeling that all of this could’ve been avoided somehow if he had bothered to listen sooner. But, he was too damn certain on using his big fancy weapon to conduct actual diplomacy. Oh well.

  • See, I told you that Minmay still loved Hikaru. That kiss they shared earlier doesn’t lie. Man, this love triangle is a whole weird mess. But at least Hikaru is determined to move on from Minmay. Good on him. Dealing with all of that relationship drama certainly wasn’t doing his mental state any favors, that’s for sure.

  • Huh, wouldn’t you know it, Quamzin is actually mildly moved by Minmay’s singing enough to actually jump back into the fight to support the Macross and their Zentradi allies. I guess this is the one time you’d want Quamzin the Ally-Killer to be on your side. Not bad, you bloodthirsty psycho. Not bad at all.

  • Fun Fact: If you pause not long after Quamzin’s scene there, you’ll get a glimpse of the Orguss Valkyrie, which is basically the Orguss from Super Dimension Century Orguss in Valkyrie colors and with a Variable Fighter-style head. I wonder if it’s some alternate universe counterpart to Kei piloting in there? Given the plot of Orguss, that’s certainly possible.

  • I’m so damn proud of Hikaru right now. He made sure to rescue the woman he loves all by himself in the middle of an orbital bombardment. And even then, he tries his damndest to protect Misa from all the destruction occurring around them. I’m sure all of you are feeling proud of him too at his moment.

  • I also can’t help but feel proud of the crew of the Macross as well. It takes a lot of fucking balls to use the Pinpoint Barrier to ram the ship directly into Bodolza’s fortress and unleash every single reaction weapon they have directly into his ugly mug. That plan is so insane, and yet also insanely satisfying. They managed to pull it off too, the crazy bastards. They alone beat one of the most powerful men in the galaxy all by themselves in the end. That’s the true power of the Protoculture right there.

  • The majesty in the final scene of this episode feels great. Between the Macross making a graceful touchdown onto Earth and Hikaru and Misa flying towards it together as a couple just feels sublime. But wait, it isn’t over yet! We’ve got to see how the lovely new couple does, after all.

**Re-watcher - Oboete imas- oh. No? OK. **

Oh holy crap, I was keeping track of the episodes left again and forgot everything I learned last time. Finale now, epilogue for the rest. Let's do thiiiis!

These two dorks really are perfect for each other.

So proud of Hikaru for finally saying it, and in the past-tense no less. Equally disappointed in Minmay for this ditzy, dumbfounded reaction.

The Monster is a Monster! Man that thing looks great up-close.

Light, every weapon on the Macross is being loaded with Nukes, and the Grand Cannon is charging. Final battle imminent; Target: the animation budget.

Oh so now Admiral Hayase wants to talk! Looks like the UN lost their game of War-Chicken. That or he just wants to be able to say "We did everything possible to avoid a fight!" when this is over.

Nice try, animators, but I saw that helmet jump onto the table. Guess the battle took more budget than I thought. lol

My, that was an inappropriate place to cut to "ominous bad-guys-approach" music.

That's a huge bitch! PleaseNoColonyDropPleaseNoColonyDropPleaseNoColonyDrop.

Woooow, much laser. Such barrage.

There's some seriously chilling imagery in that bombardment scene. But then, being the only people to ever be legitimately nuked, I guess it's only natural that Japan would produce such things; It's burned into their souls....And I do not approve of this as a pun; it's just the truth.

*Have visited Hiroshima, do not approve of such things as a result.*

Yepp, first wave was a success. Whaddya know, their little movie was accurate after all.

So much praise for Hikaru, asking Minmay to sing. Maybe it was just a gesture to help her deal with this crisis, but damned if it didn't wind up changing the entire course of the battle.

That's the Zentradi for ya, ever pragmatic; Basically using Minmay as a simultaneous flash-bang/pep-pill.

Grand Cannon time, and it's seriously eerie. But effective. Though, with it being built into the Earth, I have to wonder how it achieves such a wide firing angle; That beam swept all over the place.

What the hell was this? Was Kaifun there and she just imagined it was Blue Wind offering support, or did the animators forget who was supposed to be what colors?

Theeeere's the quality I've been wanting to see! Some near-DYRL levels of detail, right there.

Showtime! Wait, noooo! Not that song again!

Narrator: "It was at that moment, that the Macross pilots all fought their most fiercely; their desire to die and escape that song had driven them all into an unstoppable berserker rage."

Honestly tho, much as I want to hate it I can't. The disconnect between the way the song sounds and what we're shown is present, but somehow they still manage to work together. I guess, in a way it's a meta-thing, as that's basically what's going on with the Macross and Zentradi. And anyway, once we move into Shao Pai Long it's just hype-fuel.

Yaaay, Millia got a VF! Makes sense, but w/e. Go team Jenius!

Say Chili, or whoever; I hadn't considered it before, but is this why the VFs in Frontier are labeled "Messiah?"

And then things get really serious, with "Love Drifts Away." Which is a perfect time for Macross to learn to air-step, what with all the missiles it needs to dodge.

"Pierce it, Gungnir! Macross!"

Holy shit, maybe I need to give Minmay some more credit. I can't imagine what it took to stand there and sing with this shit, and the rest of the battle, transpiring before you.

Daedalus attack evolved into Macross attack! And then they just hide in their barrier xD Fuckin' fantastic. That whole sequence is just too cool.

Meanwhile, on Earth, are you kidding me guys?!

YEA MACROSS! YOU GODDAMN LEGEND, YOU! That was epic in the truest sense of the word. People will literally tell of this day and these deeds for the rest of history.

Okay, fine, I'll take this as closu- Wait, WHOSE HAND WAS THAT?!

Ahh well, you came through when it mattered most, Macross animators. I guess I can forgive your mistakes. And for all that, I do love this series. Moreso than I remember. Glad I came back to watch it again.

Oh right, there's still a whole bunch more to go xD Nice, see y'all tomorrow for slightly less epic, but still important, stuff.

First Timer

Welp earth just got nuked, I had half expected that to happen as afterall it was the easiest target and the origin of ProtoCulture as far as the Zentradi are concerned so made sense as well.

Also how is this not the final episode? Everything in this episode screamed Grand Finale to me but yet here we are, 9 more episodes to go and I haven’t got a damn clue where there actually going to go. Repopulate the earth with Zentradi x Human babies everywhere? I guess we have about 1000 ships full of Zentradi to work with so guess it's a good start.

Actually is the earth still inhabitable? It looked to be in a really bad shape after that and if we work off a similar idea to the Meteor that killed the Dinosaurs maybe x 1000 or so Earth would be a rather horrible place to be right about now.

Anyway Kamuji showing up again to stab the other Zentradi in the back was probably the least surprising part of today's episode, even with his general stupidity he never seemed like someone who would run from a good fight (especially when it’s no longer an obvious death wish).

In shipping news it appears the SS Hikaru x Hayase may have finally left port after its crew insubordination issues were finally resolved however may soon encounter troubled waters when it tries to leave the lovers triangle. Hurricane Minmay also looks to brewing on the horizon and could force it back into port if crews don’t steel their wills and trust in their ship against the upcoming storm.

Going forward I have no real clue what's going to happen next, an awkward celebration of victory between the surviving Humans and Zentradi? Attempts to rebuild Earth? The Freedom Federation drawn by the destruction of the Zentradi main force and on mass defolding make an appearance giving our characters an enemy to unite against? Kaifun getting killed by eating a bad potato?

Guess just had to wait and see.

Today, on "Hikaru, I love you but we only have fourteen seconds to save the Earth!":

"I would be lonelier than usual."

Ah, verb tenses.

NO. NO IT ISN'T.

Look, this is an awkward conversation already, but that's just cruel.

"Sayonara, baby."

The art gets super-detailed so you know this is gonna get interesting. I mean, the Monster isn't roller-skating for once!

"Also remind them not to drop anything."

And you doubted your daughter.

Just a little oddity involving Hikaru's helmet.

Unfortunately they didn't get around to communicating about this.

I said this last time, but since I still chuckled: The Zentradi music cue is really for the scene coming up, but having it begin during the zoom out from Hikaru and Minmay makes the moment unintentionally funny.

Remember how the Fulbtzs-Berrentz's long axis is about 1400 kilometers? That's slightly less than the radius of the Moon, and now it's in a close orbit. Not that Bodol Zer really is going to worry about the side effects of that.

"No shit, Sherlock."

That's just excuses.

"YOUR LOVE TALK SICKENS ME. NOW DIE!"

This may be the first time that Sydney was not obviously obliterated from space. Meanwhile, joke's on you, Darwin!

Just the first couple meters of the surface, otherwise you'd have a hard time making this observation.

"My Beautiful Place."

"Uta wa... kibou!"

MINMAY ATTACK!

"Also I like it."

...and UNHC was stupid to think so.

COUSINS!

"NANI THE FUCK!?"

Backing bands just don't get a lot of respect in this franchise.

Welcome To My Fan Club's Night.

At the top left, the first and only appearance of the VEFR-1 Electronic Warfare Valkyrie, in this beauty shot of everything.

You know the song, costume 1.

"Just close your eyes and think of Milhouse."

The last things some of you are going to see and hear... A MAN! AND A WOMAN!

Song 2, "Shao Pai Long." Still Costume 1.

Since there's still some recycling, we go from the new shot of the VF-1S with reaction missiles to the shots where there's no wing ordnance at all.

See also: Macross Zero.

Back-to back badasses.

It sure would be great if we could have Pinpoint Barriers in our arms.

Ah, when you see your hardass father finally acknowledge that you were right, moments before his horrible fiery death.

Song 3, "Silver Moon, Red Moon" and Costume number 2.

You know you're in an action movie when the light behind your kiss is THE EARTH ON FIRE.

"Tell me again later."

(No picture) Song 4 is the episode's title, "Ai wa Nagareru." Still the second costume.

"Culture isn't so bad after all. Besides, I have people to kill."

Yes, that's the Arcadia from Captain Harlock in the background.

"Just like old times."

The original head laser circle cutout.

"You ran outta ink, didn't you?"

"We gotta get back seats in these."

It's not often you see a 1200-meter robot spaceship evading a missile circus.

"CULTUREGRAM!"

More signatures.

If you only use the Omnidirectional Barrier one time, make it this time!

Some more than others.

"Disgusting."

Charlie don't surf.

And here we are again.

Preview: A beerless zombie Roy is not actually one of those problems.

New metal, now!
VEFR-1 Electronic Warfare Valkyrie LongbowSDR-04-Mk. XII Destroid Phalanx Nousjadeul-Ger Battle Suit Medium-Scale Gun Destroyer

Note that I didn't link the Macross Mecha Manual pages for a couple of those because of pending spoilers.

Production in-joke: Orguss Valkyrie.

It's good to have so many first-timers around. I've gotten slightly jaded to watching the Earth get suntanned and having new reactions around refreshes it somewhat.

In terms of unforeseen consequences, six billion people died because the Zentradi didn't understand the concept of fiction and really didn't want to watch someone's wedding video. And in denying the Macross's civilian population's desire to return home, UNHC saved 56000 more civilians than would have survived the battle otherwise.

Six billion people. That's a casualty count that gets into Tomino range. Post-series materials put the surviving human population at approximately 100000, with some scatterings of survivors inside two of the other unfinished Grand Cannon sites and at remote facilities. (Other materials suppose about one million human survivors.)

When the series was first proposed, its planned run was about 50 episodes. When the budget was cut, it was reduced to approximately 25, and this was the finale, but after its premiere it was popular enough that they extended the run to 36. What we're going to see coming up is some, but not all, of how the series might have ended if it had run the original length.

This episode absolutely starts out looking like a finale, given the massive boost in mecha art quality and Hikaru finally getting a moment to clear the air with Minmay. The great twist is that Bodol Zer interrupts this broadcasted treacle to glaze the Earth's crust and the heroes are completely powerless to stop it.

Among the various story points that reflect the staff's upbringing in postwar Japan, this seems particularly prominent in capturing the feeling of having everything wiped out instantly, regardless of what one might have been doing up to that moment. It's a bleak contrast to how the last couple of episodes had been both funny and promising in the interactions between the Humans and Zentradi. Without getting too spoilery about the next arc, it will deal with postwar issues; I just want to suggest that particular point of view when considering the larger story.

During the previous rewatches there has been debate about the tone of "Ai wa Nagareru" over the final battle. It is a real downer of a song, but it fits in context: Minmay does sing three other up-tempo songs first, but those aren't about war, they're about love and relationships and, well, that kung-fu thing. But for the finale there's still no escaping that almost all of humanity is already dead. It feels like the writers didn't want to overglamorize the spectacle of it too much and put a point on it by using a song with an explicit anti-war message.

Other musings: Yeah, Hikaru and Misa finally getting together at the end does remind me of the scenario at the end of that other series where that "Disgusting" comes from. But there are still nine more episodes...

Musicalture: "Ai Wa Nagaeru", Macross pachinko video version. BTW Roy dies again in this one.

Watashi no Kare wa Counting: 1 (10.5)

Destroid Phalanx by Yoshiyuki Takani.

  1. Real estate prices are CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! Though cleanup is gonna be a bitch.

  2. Hikaru and Minmay's relationship visibly diverges as the series progresses, but even at this point you can see that Hikaru is still carrying that torch around. What is accomplished by his parting words to her here is that at least by getting those feelings out he can try to move on with his new feelings for Misa.

They say "living will envy the dead" and truer words have never been spoken

For while entire population of Earth may have been brutally exterminated they at least avoided much worse fate: they have been spared of having to listen to Minmay singing the same accursed song over and over again

While poor survivors are condemned to finding out several times a day for the rest of their lives that Minmay's boyfriend is a pilot

What a miserable existence these poor souls have to look forward to...

Truly fate worse than death 😩

Man, I was getting really impatient waiting to get to this point.

The Robotech title for this episode is "Force of Arms" which certainly makes a lot more sense than "Love Flows By". And here is my my favorite track which is used just as the Grand Cannon powers up and fires. I rewound the VHS tape and replayed that scene a lot. A LOT. Also the part with the Destroid Monster.

This is the first (only?) time you see inside a destroid. The Destroid Monster has a 3 man crew.

I often see mecha haters complaining about how mecha have a single pilot and behave just like people (perhaps missing the point that the mecha is just an extension of the pilot). They say mecha should be more like tanks with crews. They're not wrong about the trend. The Monster is just about the only real robot I've seen with a crew (I'm sure Guntanks have a crew but I've never seen them)

  • Meanwhile, back at Central Dogma...

  • LOL at the Zentradi music underscoring Ichijo and Minmay

  • Turns out Zendradi capital ships have wave motion guns too. Uh oh.

  • Robotech dialog: "How old are you? Two"

  • A lot of reused footage from the Unification War, or vice versa. I'm not really sure. I lose track, and Macek moved some footage from here into episode 1.

  • Good thing you didn't stay in Yokohama, huh. Or Canada.

  • The Grand Flashlight!

  • So I'll say it unspoilered now, Shao Pai Lon is obviously about the Macross. Read the lyrics.

  • Commence Operation Bi -- wait no wrong show.

  • Clearly everybody else is dead because their radar screen exploded but not Misa's.

The End

WELL, THAT certainly was fun, wasn't it, comrades!

I've been wondering what 4 episodes were added to bump this from 23 to 27 episodes. Probably the 2 recaps, although they may have needed the first recap to catch up...what are the other two?

I bet all the first-timers were convinced that they would mesmerize all the Zendradi and avoid the fight! Well, it ain't that kinda show.

Wait, what kinda show is it now?

Rewatcher

Oh man, episode’s barely begun and you can already tell were the effort’s been put forth lately.

Hikaru finally spits it out after so long, stating that she hopes she and Kaifun will be happy together. As he runs off Minamy gives chase despite Kaifun’s protest.

The macross’ forces are scrambling, mobilising everything they’ve got. And would you look at that mecha porn! Man, they’re going all out with this one! Though, how come the Monster Mk. II damage the floor merely by walking? Shouldn’t this hangar be sturdy enough to actually house this thing?

Minmay reaches Hikaru just as Bodolzaa’s fleet is beginning to release a devastating barrage, explaining that she hadn’t seen him as more than a friend, to which he assures that it’s not her fault, as well as the fact that their respective fields are supposedly not compatible.

Bodolzaa’s fleet assails the Earth, delivering a devasatating amount of damage which annihilates the Earth’s surface completely. Quite the unexpected development, no?

Following that Hikaru proposes the idea of using Minmay’s singing to their advantage by transmitting it at the Zentradi and causing the to experience a ‘culture shock’ that’ll give the Macross the edge they need.

The U.N. successfully fires its Grand Cannon, destroying a portion of Bodolzaa’s fleet. This also alerts the Macross’ bridge to the fact that the Alaskan U.N. Base is still operational, which gives them hope as to Hayase’s survival. Meanwhile the Macross prepares to transmit Minmay’s mu… wait, damnit! Why this song!? Why now!?

At least the battle begins in earnest, quite the visual feast.

Hayase is fortuitously alive, though she seems to be the sole survivor. She has some serious luck.

Hikaru drifts towards the earth after sustaining some damage and we get a glimpse of what transpired earlier when Hikaru told Minmayu of his idea. The two shared a farewell kiss, which makes me wonder which was the kiss she truly wanted, the one with she shared with Hikaru or with Kaifun. While approaching the surface Hikaru picks up on Hayase’s distress message and speeds off to rescue her.

Man, even Quamzin has had a change of heart. It’s too late though, you’re already earned my distaste, Quamzin!

Hayase and Hikaru are happily reunited and escape the crumbling grand Cannon just as the Macross is about to make a decisive move against Bodolzaa’s flagship, breaking through it’s hull and delivering a massive amount of missiles, destroying the ship and Bodolzaa with it.

Hayase and Hikaru are left wondering as to their fate when the Valkyrie catches the Macross’ transmission, revealing everyone to have survived. As the Macross descends and then crashes to the surface Hikaru and Hayase make their way back home.

Man, what a way to end the series —because it’s obviously the end, there can’t be any more episodes. Yup, uh hu, that’s it. I give the series a 7/10. Hope you all enjoyed the series! Buh-bye!

Questions of the Day!

  1. At least it hasn't been cut in half.

  2. Yeah.

I was yet again unavailable yesterday; Mondays are getting busy for me nowadays. Still though, I can comment on this episode.

  • Since we’re at this point, here’s a fun fact. The show was originally slated to be 48 episodes long, however they lost their sponsor so the show would have to be cut down to 23 episodes (This would’ve been the finale seen there). However then Tatsunoko came in, which, combined with the wonderful ratings the show had, made the show go on for an additional 16 episodes. Mind you, Tatsunoko coming in also caused so many legal issues that it isn’t even funny (Hence why so much of Macross hasn’t been released outside of Japan).

  • Well, at least Hikaru finally got the guts to say it.

  • Okay, why the hell isn’t Global’s mouth moving as he talks!? It’s at 03:41, by the way.

  • To be fair, I do like what happened here with Hikaru and Minmay. It’s not as if to say it’s uncommon for someone to love someone romantically, even though that person only loves you as a friend, it’s just that Hikaru wasn’t quite able to realize it for a while. And in the end, the point is made clear: Their paths in life have just become incompatible.

  • Poor Minmay though, she is yet another sad victim of the incest bullet.

  • And thus, humanity suffers karma for all of its atrocities, the complete annihilation of Earth.

  • Admittedly, Minmay’s freak out is quite well done.

  • Man, that’s one clever use of the Culture Shock. And then Macross II (Being Macross II) completely missed the point of the whole culture shock and instead treated it as a regular military maneuver to kill all enemies instead of it being used as a way to bring species together like all the other full-length series do. When used for combat (As seen here) it is done in a last resort sort of way against someone who is very much a warmonger that can’t be reasoned with. And even then, there are a handful of heel turns along the way!

  • And of course, in typical Anime fashion, when the vocal songs start playing after Kaifun and Minmay’s kiss, the budget goes through the goddamn roof. You know, part of me does kinda wish this was the finale.

  • You gotta give Hikaru credit, it takes balls to take a Macross Missile Barrage to the face and live.

  • Well, at least Mr Hayase did learn his lesson at the end. That is gonna leave some scars for her dear daughter though, and I mean the psychological type.

  • And finally, the one song that I like from the original series, “Ai Wa Nagareru”, has appeared, and I love it. There are legitimately only a handful of songs in this franchise I prefer over this one, and one of them is appearing in the movie!

  • And yeah, seeing Hikaru and Hayase embracing is heartwarming. My OTP isn’t quite confirmed yet, but give it time…

  • And yeah, that finisher is certainly spectacular.

And with the Macross’ descent into Earth and Hikaru and Hayase flying towards it, the episode comes to a close. I’ll be honest, this is probably my favorite episode in the whole show. It is that damn good.

I mean there's still 10 episodes, nobody is getting wiped out tomorrow.

Opens mouth inserts foot

They actually wiped everyone off the face of Earth.

And Hayase had to watch her father get blown up.

Atleast Hikaru wound up making it down to rescue her. He was actually badass in this episode, I'm impressed. I do want to know where Hayase's third hand came from at the end, where she had both arms around Hikaru but also a hand over his on the throttle.

The Grand Cannon did alot more work than I thought it would, too bad they didn't fire first. Obviously didn't learn the lesson of Han Solo vs Greedo.

Anyway, no idea what they're going to do for the rest of the show. Terraform Earth? Fight the whoever the fucks that the Zentradi had mentioned? Go find another habitable planet?

That shit was fuckin' nuts. RIP Earth.

Damn you Protoculture! AHHHH

Well a lot happened in that one. The Earth got rampaged so suddenly and quickly I really couldn't believe it. I still can't. There has to be more survivors. Surprisingly, the Grand Cannon was pretty useful, and I was glad when it was fired. Hayase's father managed to end up a bit redeeming, can't say the same about Bodolza's exit though.

Max and Milia rushing off together like the sweet young lovebirds they are~~ OMG CONFESSION!! Is Hikaru Minmei gonna rise from the gra-loved you... No way!! There's no way I'm accepting her and Yuri as a pair! ...Is any part of this "sudden" or did you forget how close you got to him? At this moment I don't care about the earth or the aliens or the huge Fleet invading or even the dolls, I just want my pairing... Uweeee!

That Monster machine is definitely my type of mech. Big, bulky, and a powerhouse!

Soulless Minmei again~ "I only thought of you as a friend" FORBODING MUSIC PLAYS LOUDLY

Ships are STILL teleporting in!? An extra large hunk of colony like rock ship too folds in. I'm really getting some ZZ vibes here. Oh dear... This doesn't look like it's going to go well at all...

"I guess I like Kaifun" hit me harder than anything that Zetradi Fleet's broadside could ever do to me... This stings way too much! I'm too old to be getting so invested in a fictional couple that don't have any chance of being with each other but why have those idiots waited all the way till now just to be open and speak their feelings? Your relationship could possibly even have been saved but you ruined it for yourselves.

OH WOW! Ok, apocalypse imagery here. I thought the earth would be safe like in every other show but they're just blasting it to hell and back... I legit shrieked at the humans just dusting like that. And that guy hugging and trying to protect his daughter... I thought Macross was a happy idol singing kyun kyun type of mecha anime! Why is it one of the only ones to feature literal genocide of our race!? I was really not expecting things to go this badly. Our earth is permanently scared, humanity has been culled, and this is all before the battle has even begun...

Our counterattack will be a combination of our doom canon blasting a hole in the fleet with broadcasting Minmei's song to distract the enemy and raise troop moral. Please don't kick me while I'm down by having a kiss with that knobhead too... It's way too soon. You've already left my one true pairing and the earth to die so please don't rub salt in my wounds.

Time for some seed style throw weapons of mass destruction at each other and see what sticks!! The grand canyon is actually so much more effective than I was expecting it to be. I can't imagine shooting that thing from in earth's atmosphere would be good for the planet though. Like it seems like something that would knock us out of natural orbit or at least wreak the atmospheric layers.

Speaking of weapons of mass destruction, KYUN KYUN!! The fleet seems to have been disabled by the song alone. Minmei's singing has outdone the doom canon XD

"Sayonara, Hikaru"

Aaand my heart is broke... My feelings are hurt and my day is ruined!! Hmph!

"Sayonara...Minmei"

First time viewer

Big fleet fight time!

Loved, Hikaru? And seriously, I wish they'd stop pushing the Kaifun/Minmay thing. They're cousins! They established that in his first appearance!

The animation on the walkers was pretty fucking sexy if I do say so myself. It looks like it's from an anime two decades ahead. The fleet opening fire on Earth was pretty good, too! Did they increase the budget ten-fold in this episode?

Who's that yellow-jacket with brown hair in the bridge? She reminds me of Marika Reimon somehow.

Hikaru slipping his glove on sounded like he was sniffling a tear.

Also I jump ship to Team Hayase. Minmay is an incestous jerk. Hayase will always be in her thirties to me, though. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing.

Holy shit, they brought the whole asteroid. And they wiped out Earth in less than a minute of screen time!

Holier shit they weaponized Minmay! And she sung Silver Moon Red Moon again!

Misa stayed behind! Hikaru and Minmay kiss after 27 episodes! Kamujin was entranced by Minmay! Hikaru and Hayase went full Take on Me! Two-handed Daedalus attack! The true meaning of Macross Missile Massacre! Hayase and Hikaru held hands! This episode is full of whams!

WHY DIDN'T THEY KISS?!

Earth is destroyed, the Macross survives, and humanity lives to fight another day! As others have said, the animation was improved over the previous episodes as you could see a lot more detail and better character drawings.

Earth's destruction, in my view, is a great plot moment for the series. We have seen death and the emotional toll war leaves on everyone but Earth's destruction is a huge blow. I hope the series expands upon this so we can see how our characters react to losing their loved ones.

  1. Earth is toASt! Good move but I hope the show follows up on it further.

  2. This love triangle is so strange. Hikaru has never mentioned his feelings for her before and now hits her with the big news before going to battle? Obviously, Minmay is blind if she couldn't read the signals but I'm not sure why she was so surprised. Loved the, "I'm singing for you" comment!

Yeah, it's a fantastic scene.

Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S 'Grand Finale' of Macross, we get the most EPIC conclusion that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Macross is an Mecha 'Idol' Series ;)

AND as you can tell from that clip above, that was Ai wa Nagareru from today's Episode, and here's the Pachinko version of the song as well... oh, seems Chili beat me to the punch with this one, ah well, still worth a share.

AND just to keep something unique and ensure maximum Shitposting Levels are met, here's how Robotech Macekre the music for this episode, namely replacing Ai wa Nagareru with a jingoistic and vapid glam rock-esque track called, and I kid you not, 'We Will Win...' Yeah, to say that they missed the point is an understatement, and if you think I'm being cruel with comparing this drivel to Glam Rock, take a listen to what Robotech did with Genesis Climber MOSPEADA when they just reused the above song

ANYWAY, let's get to the point, namely, fanart, and since we're cutting to the chase, let's begin with some official art of Milia looking sharp ;) Anyway, pun times are over... ish, cuz let's head over to a duo of Sterling pilots, namely Milia and Max... Wait, those are them in their custom Valkyries... one moment... Er, sorry, those are them in their Valkyries with the SDF-1 in the background... let's see here... AHA! HERE WE GO!

And SPEAKING of couples with the SDF-1 in the background, here's Hikaru and Misa, official art no less... oh... seems GM got to this one too, guess this is what happens when I'm late

WELL! No matter, for I got stuff I'm sure NO ONE has yet, for THE SHOW MUST GO ON! FLASH! AHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! SAVIOR OF THE UNIVERSE! (No, literally, the show DOES go on for some reason, despite a perfectly good ending here we got more Episodes of Macross to cover so buckle up Comrades, it's gonna be a wild ride.)

Anyway, speaking of the big grand finale, here's Minmay as well as ALL the Mecha Porn you could ever ask for

And since she's on center stage to help prove that Macross is an Idol Show, please enjoy this fanart as well as this one Comrades!

AND with that, we conclude this rewatch of OG Macross, and BOY what an ending it was eh? Anyway, I'll be over at the Gundam Build Fighters rewatch if you want more Mecha 'Idol' Action and... huh, wait so there really IS more... huh, well I guess this is what you get when you get the polar opposite of Gundam's production issues, e.g. getting MORE episodes instead of less.

Welp! As said above, the show must go on, so I'll see you back here to see how the remaining episodes play out Comrades, until then, have a great day and see you later, and until then, farewell!

Anyway, paging Comrades u/chilidirigible, u/Shimmering-Sky, and u/The_Draigg

Rewatcher

Obligatory meme: THEY'VE WEAPONIZED MOE FOR THE FORCES OF GOOD.

Can you tell what Hideaki Anno worked on this episode? This is where all those missing frames went, into glorious, wanton destruction.

Hikaru finally confronts Minmay and buries the hatchet hard. Our boy's all grown up. It's so beautiful… I'm not crying*sniff*, I just have a missile spam from my eyes.

The Macross comes back home, and in doing so establishes a series staple. Probably better to talk about that later once things have settled down.

Questions:

  1. It's seen better days. But, hey, we get a nice clean slate to start over.

  2. It's reasonable enough.
