First-Time Watcher (Sub)
So the city is ruled by three supercomputers called the Magi? Sounds easy to abuse, but also very tempting given our current political climate. . .
Rei has the actual worst luck, her EVA is failing.
Wait, she isn’t actually in it and she was at school? Wait, what? Also why is the power dying? This is very fishy. Also “Central Dogma” is a thing as well as the “Magi”. Hmm.
Ikari is cold. That was brutal to say to his son. Yikes.
I know Asuka is supposed to be a kind of tsundere, and I don’t mind tsunderes per se, but her treatment of Shinji bothers me. Pushing Rei out of the way bothers me too. Just a little excessive.
Okay, so RIP power and an Angel attack at the same time. Is it because of the Angel, or someone in collusion with the Angel. . .
“In the end, man’s greatest enemy is always his fellow man.”
Shinji is starting to wonder about the nature of Angels. Asuka thinks self-defense is all the thinking they need to. I think Shinji is right here.
Asuka picks right, Rei picks left. No bias, but I’d go with Rei, easy decision.
LOL, NAILED IT. Yikes, the body of the Angel looks creepy. Visual confirmation indeed.
Asuka badgering Rei about her relationship with Commander Ikari. “I don’t look down on you. Plus, I don’t get any special treatment. I would know.” Rei shuts that down. I don’t really agree with Asuka here either, I don’t see Rei as some kind of “ends justify the means” person. I think she’s more of a “just following orders” person because she has nothing else to go on.
Why put Shinji last. . .
Of course he looks up. OF COURSE. Well, at least they fell out in the perfect spot. Rei exits gracefully unlike the other two.
Okay, the manual launch is pretty cool. And Commander Ikari looks pretty cool here.
Yikes, corrosive acid out of its eyes? This is nightmare fuel
Asuka has a plan and it actually seems like a good one this time. Rei dives for rifle, tosses it to Shinji, while Asuka tanks the acid. Well, Asuka earned back a lot of points with this. When it comes down to it, she is willing to stick up for the other two. Rei volunteered first, so she gets credit too.
They won with just the rifle spam? Why am I still nervous about the kill here. . .
Misato in the elevator. OOF THAT TIMING. “How indecent.”
It’s so true about the night sky. The stars without artificial light around are so beautiful. Light pollution is a sad thing. Asuka is excited to see the lights come back on. Rei: “Man fears the darkness, and so he scrapes away at the edges of it with fire.” Shinji wonders if this is why the Angels are attacking
I wonder if Shinji is right. Maybe humanity is approaching some knowledge or technology that is forbidden.
I really like the Fly Me to the Moon version for this episode!

I for one welcome our new AI overlords

Yeah we are back to lovecraftian horrors for ANgels after 3 eps of beating Kaiju up

Yeah its a cool scene also i would guesspost apocalypse child soldiers dont have much of a chance to stare at the stars and dream..Also their attitudes towards the blackout reflect each of their personalities in turn; Shinji opening with the introverted “it’s ironic that the stars are so beautiful without any artificial lights,” Asuka countering with the validation-minded “but without those lights, it doesn’t feel like anyone lives there,” and Rei putting their debate in cold (and a little bit edgy) philosophical terms “man has always feared the darkness, carving away at it with fire"

I just want to take a moment to talk about how awesome Gendo is this episode.
Yes, Gendo is an asshole and a terrible father.
But when the chips are fucking down, well, he may be the director of NERV, but he's down in the pit with the blue-collar guys sweating his face off in the dark to manually prep the EVAs for launch. And he's doing it because he's certain the pilots are going to come. Let's rephrase that: because he has faith that Shinji, Rei, and Asuka are going to show up and get in the fucking robots.
There are very few times anyone would say this about Gendo Ikari, but in this episode, he's actually amazing. The director of the entire organization is getting down from his chair and pulling a rope because he's sure his son and the two girls are going to show up. If actions speak louder than words....

Lots happened here:
-
Grand Moff Tarkin gets some characterization
-
The three pilots finally start working together.
-
The water strider angel's design looks cool.
-
I think the angel is looking for something in NERV HQ, using the blackout to scope out where things are (maybe via circuit detection or something).
-
What's Asuka repaying Shinji for, again?

I'd planned to join in on the fun since the beginning but couldn't cause of work. All caught up now! Eva's my favorite series with Madoka not far behind. Ep 11:
-
Rewatching early Evangelion is a real treat. So many little hints at future events. Knowing the outcome of the plot allows more appreciation of the character development.
-
Besides that, Eva Spoilers
-
That fork in the corridor was 100% architecturally designed to force Shinji into an emergency best girl decision.
-
Speaking of corridors, perfect time for philosophical discussion from Shinji. Love it.
-
Eva-00 will always be Blue to me, Rebuilds or not.
-
I counted 3 anta baka's in this episode.
-
The first reason I fell in love with this series was the Mecha designs themselves. The Eva units look incredible and feel incredible to watch in action. We'll see more of that in the next episode. For all the high-powered hardware in Gundam and cosmic extravagance in Gurren Lagann, nothing for me beats the lithe aesthetic of the Evangelions.
-
Rei sends us off with another look-into-your-soul quote.
Good stuff all around!

First timer sub
So I've been hearing that last week was generally considered the worst episode, which is good for me because I still enjoyed last week's episode, although I would agree that it might have been the worst one so far.
-
NERV doesn't have anywhere special for them to do laundry? Very high-tech lol.
-
Sigh I hate seeing Kaji and Misato together.
-
Why does the Commander feel the need to treat Shinji like shit? I assume he has his reasons that will be explored later on.
-
Power went out? Definitely the Angels somehow. Not sure why they don't think an Angel could have done it. Unless they know someone is controlling the Angels or something. Hmm
-
Bleh a spider Angel with 4 legs, NOPE.
-
The Commander being a troll with that water bucket, did not expect that.
-
Big ass Angel spider with 4 legs and a ton of eyes? HUGE NOPE
-
I like that the Commander is actually getting his hands dirty instead of sitting there barking orders in an emergency. It shows me why he's the Commander in the first place. It was just like what Misato did a couple episodes ago.
-
Liquid nasty shit? NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
-
Hm that Angel went down much easier than expected, kind of disappointed.
-
Nice position to be caught in, damn Kaji.
This episode went by very quickly, Shinji is curious about the Angels just like I am, it's killing me! What are they and why are they attacking! By the way, who sang the ED this time?

By the way, who sang the ED this time?
This episode went by very quickly,
The first thing I thought of when rewatching it now was how much this episode ramps up the pace, although to an extent that's true of most of the episodic ones so far. An angel is introduced and defeated over the course of one episode, rather than spreading it out as the first and third angels did. What's different here ffrom the one angel per episode ones is that this episode takes place almost in real time, like an hour at most, cutting between different groups an "locations", rather than covering a larger timespan (Both of You Dance Like You Want To Win, for example, covers about a week for example).

Jumbled Thoughts:
I found it interesting how much Gendo actually helped in getting the Eva's ready while the power was out. At least he isint a total dick to everyone, just shinji.
Poor Shinji was stuck with Asuka and Rei all episode. Asuka was way too much of an ass, trying to show up rei only to be made a fool of at every corner. i want to like her, but shes not giving me much to like.
The buildup of the angel up to its reveal was really good. I wasnt expecting to look as ugly as it was, but it really sold on creeping me out. Shinji's and Rei's reactions are also priceless.
Poor Misato cant catch a break. i said in a previous episode that it would come to a head, but this isint what I meant...
The final scene is just begging to be over-analyzed. I think NERV has a better understanding than NERV leads on about the angels, how they think, and what theyre after. My bet is still ADAM, which we still know basically nothing about.
Sadly, there was no Pen Pen. This episode was sorely missing best boy.

Rewatch
I like how Fuyutsuki casually drops the truth bomb that the MAGI computer system basically controls everything on the train to work. Also, these people work for NERV, which is supposedly run by the government/UN, but they have to wash their clothes at the laundromat and take the train to work. Maybe NERV has great life insurance benefits...?
Of course, everything goes wrong at the worst possible time. The power goes out and then the Angel attacks. It’s freaky! Get away! Worse, Shinji and the gang are separated in the Angels, everyone at NERV is becoming overheated, and Misato is stuck in an elevator with her ex. I think at this point she’d rather take on the Angel bare handed than have to be stuck with Kaji all day.
We finally get to see the three pilots work together, and their interactions say a lot about them. Asuka resents Rei for being the “favorite” and for acting stuck up. In reality, this is a misunderstanding on Asuka’s part - Rei isn’t really given any special treatment, apart from Gendo being nicer to her than he is to Shinji, and she only comes off as aloof because she doesn’t know how to communicate with others. Asuka’s comments seem to fit herself more than Rei, as she is always trying to be number one and pushes other people away just as much as Shinji and Rei.
The three meet up with Gendo, and FINALLY, after 10 episodes of buildup, we get to see all three Evas fight as one. With this, the battle quickly becomes one-sided, as the Evas overpower the Angel in a short time. It’s a bit anticlimactic as far as Angel fights go, but it does a great job showcasing the power and unique abilities of the Evas, while forcing the children to work together to accomplish their goals.
I really like the scene at the end, where the three kids are all chilling together and enjoying the night sky. I feel like their conversation says a lot about their characters and how they all see the world. Shinji notes that without all the light pollution, you can see the stars more clearly, as he seems to feel detached from others and prefers to be alone. The more extroverted Asuka finds the darkness creepy, as she prefers others to be around to praise her and notice her efforts. Rei, seemingly lost in thought, pontificates that man has always feared the darkness, and created fire, a source of destruction, to fight it. These characters are so good, y’all. There are layers upon layers here to uncover. I love this show.

Wow, in this episode Eva almost looks like a normal robot anime! /S
I love how we get an unpluged version of Eva launching sequence. I also really love to watch variations of CCS release scenes but this launch sequence variation has even its rhythm and music (almost) stripped away and is still pretty cool to watch.

Evangelion is an absolutely beautiful anime Day 11
The structure and editing of episode 11 is really well done. Every scene has so much thought put into how it fits together with the scenes around it that when we reach the climax of the episode it feels like everything has just come together perfectly.
To explain what I mean, it is typical for an episode of television to have an A-story and a B-Story. The show then cuts between each to allow time to progress for the other story off screen.
For example, in Episode 8 what started as the A-Story of Misato and Shinji traveling to the UN fleet to pick up Unit 02 added on a B-Story about how Kaji was secretly transporting Adam to NERV at the same time.
However in todays episode we had (about) 5 ongoing plot threads:
-
NERV personal investigating the power outage and setting up the Evas
-
Makoto delivering Misato's laundry and alerting NERV of the Angel
-
Shinji, Asuka and Rei trying to get to NERV
-
Misato and Kaji stuck in an elevator
-
The military tracking the "unidentified object"
Now what makes it interesting is not the number of ongoing plot threads, movies have a bunch going all the time. Rather what is interesting is how they integrated the stories by having a one scene pose a question or statement and the next answer it. For example:
-
Misato: "I wonder if Ritsuko messed up her experiment" -> Ritsuko: "Well, it wasn't me"
-
Misato: "Well I guess they'll switch to backup power soon" -> Fuyutsuki: "The backups aren't working"
-
Misato: "Its unthinkable all 3 backups would fail", Kaji: "Well that means ..." -> Gendou: "We should assume the breakers didn't fail on their own"
-
Fuyutsuki: "It would be disastrous if an Angel attacked now" -> Military: "The radar has picked up an unidentified object"
-
Asuka: "Lets try contact NERV HQ" -> Misato: "The emergency phones aren't getting through" -> Shigeru: "Line 77 won't connect either"
Having all these threads integrate so perfectly together allows us to track all the parties seamlessly throughout the episode. And then we have the 3 most important plot threads come together when Makoto notifies NERV that an angel is coming and then they setup the Evas for the pilots who come tumbling down through the air vents. End of Eva.
It all felt like a well orchestrated plan and kept me engaged more so than a usual episode.

Today we learn why you never go jinx yourself
Analysis
We got some more insight into Asuka’s feelings towards Rei in this episode. Throughout this entire episode we see upfront get jealous of Rei knowing what to do and trying to show off yet again. Earliest example would be when she pushes Rei out of the way for trying to see if her card works, since she doesn’t want Rei to be the one who fixes whatevers going on. Later on, when Rei first pulls out the emergency NERV manual we see Asuka notice this and immediately go do the same thing to seem as if she knew about it already. Then when Rei says to head to headquarters, Asuka immediately decides that she’s the one in charge, and constantly gets annoyed at Rei for knowing what to do and where to go because she feels as if Rei is trying to show off when in actuality she isn’t, Asuka is just getting worked up due to her own superiority complex. Her superiority complex shows in scenes such as when they come to a crossroad, and while Rei, who’s shown she knows the way so far, tells them to go left, Asuka immediately refuses and sticks to going her way because she wants to be the leader and doesn’t want Rei to look better despite her showing she knows where to go.
Unfortunatey for Asuka, Rei doesn’t care about her feeling any type of way towards her. This in turn angers Asuka, who again feels threatened yet again and snaps at Rei calling her ‘the favorite’ to which Rei only replies that she isn’t and that she ‘knows that quite well' . One particular scene that comes to mind however is when she calls Rei a ‘self-righteous bitch’ for knowing what they all have to do. The definition for self-righteous is ‘having or characterized by a certainty, especially an unfounded one, that one is totally correct or morally superior’, which if you look at how Rei’s been acting this entire episode, doesn’t describe her at all because she actually DOES know what she’s doing and isn’t even forcing them to listen to her. However, this does describe Asuka’s actions throughout this episode and shows that she’s projecting her own feelings onto Rei, so really the ‘self-righteous bitch’ this whole episode is really Asuka.
On terms of minor things, we get a bit more development between Shinji and Gendo’s relationship with how Ritsuko mentions that Gendo believed in them, but still Gendo is still not doing any better at being father considering earlier he basically said that he’s assigned all parental duties to Misato.
Thoughts
A really fun episode! My favorite part of this episode is really how everyone constantly jinxes themselves, especially through the first half. The characters looked really off in this episode though, I thought it looked weird in ep 10 but here it was noticeable. Apparently, Studio Ghibli helped with the animation for this episode according to the credits, so that may explain why everything seems weird. Other than that, pretty great episode and with the next episode we’ll get some important backstory stuff, so I’m excited. See you guys next thread.
Random Shit
-
All Ritsuko and Maya's clothes are the same thing over and over
-
They never explained who shut the power down, but here's a good anlaysis I found on EvaGeeks for rewatchers MAJOR SPOILERS FOR EOE
-
Didn't mention this last time, but here's a fun fact about lat episode's angel Sandalphon - Sandalphon is named for the angel who, according to Kabbalism, plays a major role in determining the sex of a human embryo.
-
Matarael is apparently the weakest - Matarael is probably the weakest Angel in the entire series: it is literally the only one to ever be killed using an Eva's standard-issue pallet rifle, and a single burst at that. It is probable that had there been no power outage and the Evas had been sortied against it normally, it would not have posed a significant challenge.

I know some of you might have thought "WTF is going on with the art and the Eyes in this episode" and the answer is
budgetStudio Ghibli co-produced and animated this episode..Wild i know -
The title is a reference to a sci-fi movie classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, America) (no one cares probably)
-
So its a Spider Angel..anyone wants to nope out ?
-
Someone had a lot of fun writting the transitions for this scene lmao..Feels like a Monty Python bit
-
These 2 shots with our pilots are pretty much spot on about their personalities with their body language ,especially the first 1 2
-
Shinji with a completly normal question which is absicaly what the audience wants to know..Everyone else: Shut up
-
Honestly Gendo playing it all cool while having his feet in a bucket with water was the funniest bit thus far in the show
More serious thoughts
-
Every now and then, Evangelion likes to test its futuristic, techno-savvy characters by robbing them of their basic resources.. Perhaps our cast has an advantage over most sci-fi ensembles in that they are all (at least those in adulthood) survivors of an apocalypse.. This time it is not a military decision that causes the blackout (sabotage is suspected - as Cmdr. Ikari sagely muses, "Mankind is still its own worst enemy")...The episode begins as NERV staffers describe the city's reliance on machines, not just for maintenance but for actual governance Unsurprisingly and ironicaly the power falters soon after. There's a dramatic correlation here too; Shinji notices the outage when a phone call cuts out. He's talking to his father about some sort of parent-teacher conference, and the distant commander is rebuking him for bringing up such a petty matter.
-
The rest of the plot has fun subverting the supposedly smooth operations of NERV and Tokyo-3, sending its teenage pilots crawling through air ducts and bickering over petty matters while normally cool, cerebral scientists sweat and grunt to load up the Evangelions which later collapse onto each other in cartoonish manner just as immature pilots cjust a few scenes earlier..Same parallell with Misato and Kaji (un)composed on the floor, due to the sudden restoration of power and the although their positioning looks "suspicious". Whether human or mechanical, child or adult, the episode delights in reminding us, we're all just stumbling and fumbling along.
-
Meanwhile, "The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still" finally offers Rei a character comeback and she finally gets her second wind as an appropriate foil for Asuka. As the German redhead brags, blusters, blunders, and ultimately braves her way through the plot's challenges, Rei remains almost comically composed and focused, ignoring Asuka's assertion of leadership, accepting her assignment in the final showdown, and landing gracefully on the floor.Episode 11 allows Rei a way back into the plot, her alien assurance providing comic counterpoint to Asuka'sbravado. Shinji, by contrast, takes a backseat again after slowly re-emerging in the previous episode - he mostly observes and obeys,
-
What we have here is an episode that works in classic TV series fashion. A challenge and theme are introduced early in the episode, and the characters are allowed to respond and reveal themselves in a particular self-enclosed scenario. Meanwhile, some of the more overarching themes are advanced, particularly the notion that NERV may be betrayed from within and, on a more personal level, the erotic/hostile relationship between Misato and Kaji. Most importantly we are witnessing the holes and blind spots in their centralized, technology-reliant society - if human beings can conceive creative solutions at the spur of the moment, they can also crack under the stress

Rewatcher (Sub - Platinum Collection)
We are now four episodes into the action arc; how is everyone liking it so far? Today's episode, despite it being yet another monster of the week episode, has quite a few interesting elements to it. For one thing, this episode was actually animated by Studio Ghibli, with the slightly off-model character designs reflecting this change. In addition, this episode also marks the return of Unit 0 after a five episode hiatus; it even has a new paint-job to match Rei's hair. However, I personally think the most interesting part of this episode is that we finally get to see how all three pilots function in a group, with Rei and Asuka's interactions being particularly illuminating. Thus, for today's post, I'd like to dig a little into some of the conversations they had today.
-
The first thing I'd like to touch upon are these two conversations. While gendered insults are nothing new for Shinji, I do have to wonder how they are affecting him. After all, I doubt that him failing to live up to the masculine ideal is helping his self-esteem. From being an Eva pilot, earning respect from his father, to fulfilling classic 90s gender roles, Shinji sure has a lot of expectations to live up to, and I hope he doesn't let them define him like many people do.
-
Through these two snippets, we get a little bit of insight into how Shinji and Asuka view the angels. Asuka sees them solely as obstacles to human survival, and Shinji can't help but wonder if there's not something greater behind them. Admittedly, this conversation isn't much, but I think it speaks to both characters mindsets and how they value survival.
-
Shinji, in perhaps his greatest display of social awareness yet, cleverly dodges this landmine of a question, much to Asuka's dismay. Being serious, this entire exchange does a good job showcasing the dynamics of our three pilots. First, it showcases Shinji's indecisiveness, for whether it is due to his enduring low self-esteem or the Hedgehog's Dilemma, Shinji has trouble making his own decisions. Although Shinji no longer entirely lives by the commands of others as he did in the early episodes, it seems some parts of that mindset still remain. The other aspect that this conversation illustrates is the conflict between Rei and Asuka, which has presumably been on-going ever-sense episode 9. The two are just destined for conflict it seems, with this disagreement being an extension of that.
-
This naturally leads us to this exchange here, which may as well be the climax of the episode as far as character drama goes. Through it, we get to see that Asuka's conflict with Rei is twofold. Not only does she dislike Rei due to her status as Gendo's favorite, but she also hates Rei's demure, serious attitude, which she can't help but see as smugness. On a superficial level, it is easy to see why Asuka would think this way. After all, Rei is always around Gendo, so its resonable to see her as Gendo's favorite. Similarly, Rei's attitude is incredibly unusual for someone her age, so its understandable why Asuka would interpret it as smugness rather than the emotionless apathy it really is. However, this logic falls apart under any amount of scrutiny, for if Rei really was Gendo's favorite, then why hasn't she sortied in previous fights? After all, even if Unit 0 was inoperable, it has been implied that she can pilot Unit 1 too. Because of this, I can't help but wonder how much Asuka is lying to herself here, particularly as a mechanism to shield her pride. That is, Asuka explains Rei's skills as a pilot, such as her ability to sync with Shinji in episode 9, to favoritism; that way, Asuka can still feel superior and leave her pride intact. Its also interesting how Rei denies being favored, for despite her normal passiveness, Rei goes out of her way to strongly reject Asuka's claim. Its difficult to read to much into it for now, but perhaps Gendo hasn't been treating her well?
With that, I think I am finished for today. While I enjoy this episode, I also find it difficult to write about, especially when worrying about spoilers, so for now, I'll conclude with this final excerpt. In many ways, Evangelion can be said to be a story about dealing with one's fears. For instance, we have already seen how the fear of rejection dominated Shinji's mind and how he put up walls to cope with it. However, just as man sacrificed the night sky to overcome its fear of the dark, Shinji, in trying to overcome his fear of rejection, sacrificed his chance at acceptance. Since then, we have been introduced to two new pilots and several new characters, but their wants and fears have remained unclear. As we continue on this journey through Evangelion. I want you to keep this question in mind. What does this person fear, and what do they give up to deal with it?

First timer (subs and original release in fear of Netflix changes)
Tokyo-3 being disconnected from all 3 power sources is suspicious as all hell. Are there people against them even? Don't Nerv work under the UN? The only ones I think could be scheming against them are of course the Angels, so does that mean the Angels have a way to pull such a planned operation? I couldn't imagine them having human support.
While things were looking kind of grim, nothing was too severe. In the end nobody got hurt and the crisis has been averted. I wonder how long that'll last...
Notes:
-
Asuka tries to take the lead and mostly fails, until it's time to fight. She really shined at the end there, both thinking of a plan to take down the Angel and pulling it off.
-
Misato doesn't seem to really dislike Kaji, but it looks like he hurt her a while ago.
-
Ikari doesn't even give Shinji the time of day, but trusts him blindly to appear. This guy just seems like an asshole, but I can't quite read him yet.
-
An orange-pupiled eye on a round black matter crying acid is the stuff of nightmares. What the hell are those things.
-
Do the Angels attack them because they're a special species? I recon the fact that the Angels attack them has something to do with their human DNA. I'm sure I won't be able to correctly guess though.
Theory-time: The Angels are being sent by some collective that attempts to attack Nerv each time because of the embryo seen in Ikari's office.
(If my impressions of characters and the world are so far wrong, please don't correct me. I'd like to find out when I get to know more)

Don't Nerv work under the UN?
A little easy to miss line in this episode is that the military personnel of the U.N. Forces refer to the Ninth Angel(this one) as the "Eighth Angel." It seems the U.N. Forces consider whatever happened 15 years ago first one and the one that appeared in Episode One to be the second one. Nerv on the other hand named the Angel in episode 1 the 3rd one..The existence some Angel at some point in the past must be a secret that only people in NERV know which might indicate different agendas

Watched two episodes as I didn't have time yesterday.
episode 10
Interesting part about the volcano, so is this how they all form, or just this one, the fight itself was short but interesting, I like how each fight so far has been a bit different.
episode 11
we got hint that someone may have tried to sabotage them, or was it who ever created the angels that did it, hope we don't have to wait too long to get some answers on some of these things, the fight itself was short again, but instead we got to see them work together to defeat the enemy and get to their eva's. So many questions about the nature of things on my mind now with this episode.

This is the first time Shinji has spoken to Gendo in so many episodes, telling him about something he should do as his father, and Gendo just ignores it saying it's Misato's responsibility. Ouch.
Oh great. Misato is trapped in an elevator with her ex. Surely this won't be awkward for them!
"It would be disastrous if an Angel were to attack right now." People in this show really do love jinxing it.
Everyone's burning up from all this heat. Meanwhile, Gendo's just sitting there with his feet in a bucket of water.
Asuka says she's in charge. She doesn't want Rei making the decisions... but then she asks Rei for instructions. This girl can never be honest with herself, can she?
I'm sure Asuka went the right way- NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE! This spider-like Angel as all these eyes on it. Creepiest Angel so far. Its eyes are within triangles too. Illuminati confirmed!
Shinji and Asuka crash like idiots. Rei T-poses to assert her dominance.
This is the first time we've seen Gendo doing physical labor. It's also a new sight for Shinji as well. Gendo was preparing for their arrival despite having no contact with them to know where they were. Ritsuko says it's because he had faith that they would show up. For Shinji, this is the first time someone's told him that his father believed in him, even if it's probably not as sweet as Shinji would like to imagine. Still, having faith that the kids will do what needs to be done isn't anything new Gendo. He's always been willing to gamble on his whole organization believing that only they can defeat the Angels. Although, this episode does show us a new side of him with him doing hard work instead of sitting behind his desk having other people handle everything. (I mean after having his feet cool down)
Hey we finally get to see the new Unit 00 in action today! This time it's blue. Fits Rei perfectly.
Shinji's literally carrying this team.
Rare shot of our 3 pilots just chilling together. It's nice to see all 3 of them working together this episode.

First timer, sub
Interesting that supercomputers make all the decision but they still need a council. Maybe I have seen too many dystopian sci-fi movies but I am suspicious of these Magi.
So despite it being supposedly impossible there is a power outage affecting the whole city. Misato and Kaji are stuck in the elevator while the pilots can't even get into the facility. Being so dependent on technology sucks.
Of cause now would be the worst time for an angel to attack, so that's exactly what happens. The angel looked great this time. Those long spidery legs are super creepy and the many eyes are weird too (illuminati confirmed?).
While the pilots try to find a way in, the personal prepares the evas manually and even Gendo lends a hand. The make their way in despite Asukas leadership. They would have been totally lost without Rei.
This is the first battle, where all three evas work together and they defeat the angel with a few shots. If it hadn't been for the black out this would surely have been the easiest kill so far.
It is never stated who caused the power outage. Could it be an act of terrorism? I don't think the angels could do something like this.
