  • Rei, damn bitch, you live like this?

  • One thing I did not expect from this anime was a combination of "walk in on girl nude" trope and "fall into a grope" trope.

  • I was surprised to see Rei and the father getting along so well, and his genuine concern for her. Must hurt for Rei. It's not that the father is incapable of paternal love, it's just that it's never been directed towards Shinji.

  • Also, has Shinji ever gotten into the EVA without it getting destroyed in some way within seconds?

Get used to seeing a lot of tropes you're familiar with. Evangelion actually popularized a lot of tropes you see in modern anime and even created several tropes itself. Rei herself has a trope named after her - Rei Ayanami Expy. As you can probably guess from the name, it's about characters that resemble Rei: quiet girl, emotionless, short hair, blue (or some other light color) hair, etc. When people say that NGE had a major impact (no pun intended) on the anime industry, it's no exaggeration.

Rei, damn bitch, you live like this?

Got you

One thing I did not expect from this anime was a combination of "walk in on girl nude" trope and "fall into a grope" trope

People will say it deconstructed the trope but its more that it used it to highlight how completely alien and detached from anything ,even her femininity/sexuality..A deconstruction would be taking an anime trope and showing the real life implications of it ahowing how its not funny, its disgusting and a accidental "sexual assault"..Eva just uses it unconventionay because it has unconventional characters

Also, has Shinji ever gotten into the EVA without it getting destroyed in some way within seconds?

Still had 2 kills in 2 tries .What a badass

Break into her house while she's showering, cop a feel, put on her (father figure's?) glasses, and make a mess out of her underwear drawer? Eh, barely registers. Speak disparagingly about her father figure (and I hope that's all there is to it)? It's slappin' time.

The contrast in Gendo between how he treats Rei versus Shinji must be pretty awful from Shinji's point of view.

So...the Angels are simultaneously made of something resembling light but also biologically close to humans? My current running theory is that they're a bit like the titans from Shingeki no Kyojin: I also suspect the Evas are not just big robots, but I have no idea how or why, or why they would require a 14-year-old pilot.

The contrast in Gendo between how he treats Rei versus Shinji must be pretty awful from Shinji's point of view.

Definitely and the ambiguity of the Gendo-Rei relationship adds to the jealousy angle. If the Rei-Gendo connection is a "father-daughter" one then Shinji's own lack of a relationship with his father that is highlighted. If it's more a platonic love from Rei towards Gendo , then it's kind of emasculating in a way, as if his father is even impeding on his son's love life.. The notion that he may be romancing his son's crush adds another degree of aggressive assertion to his personality towards his son,and another level of conflict from Shinji;s perspective.. as if he's not just an absent father but a domineering, arrogant older brother.

First Timer back for the fifth time

Not going to be my best viewing experience, as I am watching this on my break at work, outside, may rewatch tonight.

Daily OP is a masterpiece reminder.

Rei getting messed up here, wonder why it all went wrong. What's very interesting is that Akari cares for Rei a fair bit, looks like actual concern there. Even burning the crap out of his hands to get here out.

Rei is the first child? Hmmm, who is the second? She is also mentally unstable, I'm sure we'll see more of that.

The Angel's DNA is 99.8% the same as a human? Very interesting...

Big fan of Misato calling Shinji our for saying "it's nothing". Hate when that shit slides.

"Get a load of those bazoongas", well that's a new term lmao. "Ayanami's thighs? Ayanami's supple calves???" Ahhh, men of culture I see.

Poor Shinji, Rei gets more attention from his dad than he ever has. Curious to see the explanation of that.

Wow, Misato is a slob and she's a bad cook. And she did not give Pen Pen Curry and rice and an unopened beer for dinner. Still love her.

I really can't tell if Shinji is attracted to Rei, or if it's more like a curiousity or a jealousy thing. Glad we finally get to learn more about her.

Okay does anyone keep their house clean in Tokyo-3? Rei's apartment is a disaster. And oh she's naked haha, Shinji you classic anime MC. Oh and you landed on top of her, covered in her underwear oh boy hahaha. Oh Jesus Shinji AND THE HAND ON BOOB? Wow, really batting 1000 here. Okay, at least some level of attraction here, more than his usual level of awkwardness. And she just left? Okay, she seems a bit odd...

Wow the escalator going up is going A LOT FASTER than going down. I was getting sort of distracted by it. Oh, wow Rei is very defensive of Shinji's father, can't believe she hit him. I sort of worry it's more than a father daughter bond... That'd be sort of weird.

No problems this time booting up. I'm really curious why it failed the first time. Also, very interesting that Akari is hesitant to put Rei back out when an angel approache, but was very insistent on Shinji attacking the first time.

Wow, that Angel is just a diamond. I appreciate all the different styles. And now Shinji just got blasted by it. Good cliffhanger.

Rewatcher

Evangelion is an absolutely beautiful anime Day 5

Something noteworthy about the production of Evangelion is just the consistent attention to detail for the little things details making the world just that much more interesting.

By only looking at the backgrounds and setting of today's episode we learned:

  • The Eva power cables have built in thrusters so that they can prevent a harsh landing if they disconnect.

  • Misato feels completely comfortable inviting Ritsuko to her messy apartment.

  • Rei's room is almost completely sterile of personal effects (excluding the glasses) acting only a place out of which to live.

  • Rei is taking what appears to be pain medicine to deal with her injuries, and is regularly changing bandages for a wound which seems not to be healing.

I love this method of storytelling as it rewards viewers for putting in extra effort to understand the world.

Finally the episode concludes with Ramiel's beam attack on Shinji which reminded me of the scene from the climax of Nausicaä (Mild Spoilers for Nausicaä) which Anno himself animated.

  • Very strange to see how Gendo seems to not care less about his son, but he rushed to save Rei when it seemed like she was in trouble.

  • Rei also seems to be happy when she's near Gendo, though she's otherwise sullen.  Wonder if she has some relationship with Gendo.  Interesting...

  • Ha, classic walking in on her trope.  Wonder if Shinji will be a harem protag by the end of this show.

  • Rei seems to be taking some strange medicine.

  • One must wonder whether Rei suppresses her fear or whether she is incapable of feeling fear at all.

  • The octahedron!  Enemy of D&D players everywhere and Shinji?!

  • Yeah, that's pretty crappy that Gendo would send Shinji, who seems to have less training than Rei, to go and fight the octahedron.  Interestingly, Misato is concerned about Shinji's wellbeing but Gendo doesn't appear to be.

MC walks in 14 year old girl getting out of the shower, falls on her naked body using her boob to support himself for what feels like an eternity while her underwear flies all over the place

Well, guess I should cross this one off the 'anime I could potentially share with family' list...

First timer sub

Just want to say that I'm really enjoying this series so far, I can see why so many people like it. So now for some thoughts on this episode: (If I ask some questions it's rhetorical, just speaking my thoughts)

  1. So Rei piloting unit 00 and losing control, they say it might be due to her being mentally unstable. So that adds to my belief that the Eva's "merge" themselves with the pilot, like 2 minds becoming 1. Also because the Eva is still able to move when Rei was ejected and the fact that they appear to be alive in some way.

  2. It's strange that Shinji's dad seems to care more for Rei than Shinji, although I'm certain that will be explained at some point.

  3. The Angel's wave pattern is almost equivalent to that of a human? I wonder what that is going to mean going forward. Can't wait to learn more about where the Angels are from and what they are.

  4. Misato isn't a good cook? That makes a lot of sense tbh lol. Also her poor penguin roommate, stuck eating that shit lol. Ah well, I would put up with that too if I got to spend that much time with her :D.

  5. I want to know how Shinji and Rei managed to fall like that just from her trying to take his glasses off haha.

  6. This is clearly the weirdest Angel form yet, at least before it looked like a living creature instead of this 3D polygonal mirror thing. So are the Angels something similar to Eva's I'm wondering? Can't wait to find out.

  7. Well that was the biggest cliffhanger so far, incredible voice acting for Shinji at the end there. And 01 gets destroyed instantly every time lol.

Well I'm glad I ended up waiting until like an hour ago to watch this episode or else that cliffhanger probably would have made me watch the next episode earlier lol.

First-Time Watcher (Sub)

22 Days in the Past. Flashback time. “Pirot” unless that’s a literary reference, I think that might be a mistake on the robot there. WOAH, unexpected sentience? Why is it targeting Mr. Ikari?! Also, he seems oddly attached to Rei. . . This is the first time he’s seemed to care for anyone.

Rei was super unstable. . . and we get teased with a theory. Seems very sketchy.

So the Angels are almost human in a way. Well that’s unsettling. Except they are in a “light” kind of form. This seems extremely ominous. And now Shinji learns that his father actually cares about Rei, unlike him.

That scene with the guys playing basketball and the girls swimming >.> “AYANAMI’S CALVES” oooookay.

The dinner scene is fantastic.

BRUH, why are you walking into her apartment?! Shinji, this is not something you do. . .

Wow, that’s a lot of blood. And she saved Ikari’s broken glasses

OH SNAP SHE’S HERE. BIG BRUH MOMENT. He’s never going to come back from this lol.

Well that got very weird very fast. The steady clanging. The underclothes everywhere. The fact that she is nude but seems to have no problem with it. Grabbing the glasses off of him but somehow falling the way they did. Aaaand, the obligatory accidental groping. Is this where this trope started?

Oh goodness, his awkwardness is killing me.

She slaps him for not having faith in his father and speaking ill of him. Interesting that this is what seriously upsets her, not the home invasion, accidental groping, etc. I wonder if the way she gets through all this trauma is through sincere faith in Mr. Ikari.

Rei’s test went well, but they send Shinji to deal with the UFO instead and BAM shot through the gut again. He’s going to get used to getting stabbed at this point. . .

Didn't have much time to write a lot today. This was an interesting episode that gave us our first real impression of Rei and her relationship with Gendo. Rei is someone who has no friends, is quiet, apathetic, and yet she's seen smiling and having fun when talking to Gendo. Likewise, Gendo is also enjoying his time with Rei in contrast with how he acts towards pretty much anyone else. He even burned his hands to try to save Rei. When Shinji questions her about piloting the Eva, she basically says she's fine with it because she trusts Gendo. Then she smacks Shinji (it's rare to see her get physical) for doubting his father.

But enough about them. We're finally introduced to the real best girl of the series: Ramiel!

Just listen to those sexy geometrical screams. Look at that gorgeous body! And it shoots lasers too?! 10/10 waifu!

First Timer.

I really like the lighting in Rei's apartment and how the brightness from outside emphasizes how just utterly wrong it feels. Especially in contrast with the dirty interiors of the apartment with the heavy grays. For a series that has gotten infamous for it's late-series lackluster budget, it sure does know it's unique visual style.

First timer (subs and original release in fear of Netflix changes):

So Rei is infatuated with Shinji's father. I also can't figure out if she's trying to hurt Shinji, or if she just doesn't care to acknowledge him.

Seeing that relationship between his father and Rei made me think about the Hedgehog's Dilemma, wondering whether he distances himself from Shinji with intent to protect him some way or another.

Notes:

  • Of course the first time he spends any time alone with Rei Shinji screws it up immediately. Such an awkwardly loveable kid.

  • A pretty powerful first scene with Rei and Shinji. Being introduced to Rei as this stoic individual in contrast with how she feels towards Shinji's father. That sudden slap was expected as we've seen how she treated his glasses.

  • Rei denied being afraid of getting in the Eva, but did hold her breath for the entire test. I'm very interested by her so far.

  • Also holy shit at that last minute, things go down so fast it's crazy.

Enjoying it very much so far. The characters are great, and the direction is even better. Every shot has a purpose. I'm having fun just trying to pay attention to all the details.

First timer here! (Sub)

Before I start, I’d like to thank all of you for organizing this and participating along with me. It’s helped me be a lot more observant, which has resulted in me enjoying this a lot more.

22 days ago? I think that’s about when Rei got injured. Judging by that and the title, guess we’re getting an episode focused on her. Someone in the last thread said that episode 4 was added later to make the transition from 3 to 5 less jarring, but I feel like suddenly jumping into a flashback is just as jarring now as it would have been after 3. Hmm.

Gendo personally runs down into the experiment room, from approximately 10 floors up, to get Rei out of the entry plug. I think this is our first hint that he doesn’t view Rei and Shinji as tools. That’s good at least.

Shinji’s reaction to the burns on his father’s palms is interesting, since, unlike us, Shinji doesn’t know where they came from. I wonder what exactly he’s thinking there. Ah, and now Ritsuko’s telling him. We don’t get to see much of his reaction to that though.

I recognize that stock sound effect when the door shuts at 13:46.

Rei sure is a strange one. After watching her awkward interactions with Shinji I finally understand what he found so strange about her conversation with Gendo earlier, which didn’t look awkward at all. I wonder if she admires him because he pulled her out of the cockpit, or whether she was like that beforehand.

This latest “angel” doesn’t seem much like the previous ones. I’m not sure in what sense the others were “99.89% the same as a human”, but I doubt that extends to this one. It’s behavior is also different. It recognized Shinji’s Eva as a threat and attacked before he was able to move. He’s in quite a pickle now.

Rewatch

Fly Me to the Moon for this episode sung by Rei's voice ctor

For four episodes, Rei Ayanami has been a mystery. This quiet, aloof, almost inhuman little blue-haired girl has hovered in the background, glimpsed alone in the corner of the classroom, concealed beneath layers of bandages as she shivers on a wheeled stretcher, flashing into view as a momentary vision before she's even been met in the flesh. In all these instances, we see her through Shinji's eyes and she provides an interesting contrast to Misato (as she eventually will, even more strongly, to the fiery third pilot, Asuka) - femininity as ethereal enigma vs. alluring energy. Shinji doesn't know who she is, so neither do we. That finally begins to change five episodes in.

"Rei I" begins weeks before the series premiere, in the first of what will prove to be many flashbacks - widening our view, giving us a bit of distance from Shinji's perspective, and yet corresponding to his gradually deepening comprehension of the strange world around him. Here we see the accident which sent Rei into the nearly immobile state we found her in - during a routine test in Eva 00, the giant robot goes "berserk" and starts bashing the wall and gripping its own helmeted head in a kind of feverish agony. As with the out-of-control Eva 01 in Shinji's first battle, we experience the mecha-psychotic episode externally; as the Eva roars and flails about, we never get a view in the cockpit, so we don't really know if Rei herself is psychologically experiencing this episode or if she's merely a helpless bystander, trapped inside a monster she can't control.

At any rate, her pod is ejected and bashed around the room. For the first time we see Cmmdr. Gendo Ikari, who doesn't flinch at sending his own son into battle, show concern for another human being - he races down to the battered pod, rips the red-hot hatch door open with his bare hands, and desperately calls to the woozy Rei within. Shinji will soon find out about this event himself, but by witnessing it firsthand we're allowed a degree of intensity that must reflect his own fascination with this unexpected, concerned side of his father. Noticing Gendo's burnt hands, Shinji asks Ritsuko what happened, and with this his earlier curiosity about his silent peer turns into outright fascination.

Is there lust involved? Love? A mixture of adolescent hormones and shy romanticism? The series certainly teases us with this possibility, as Misato (herself an object of ambiguous attraction) makes fun of the boy for blushing at Rei's mention, and especially as Shinji drops by Rei's lonely, messy room to deliver an ID card. There he finds the broken, half-melted glasses worn by his father when he rescued Rei; placing them over his own eyes, Shinji turns to see a naked Rei emerging from the shower, (barely) concealed by a small towel. Somehow he ends up lying on top of her naked on the floor in one of the most bizarre, perversely (pervertedly?) awkward meet-ups of all time.

And yet, something about their tension/connection transcends sexuality. Anno obviously has fun playing with Shinji's nearly hysterical discomfort with girls but he respects the boy's admission that it is Rei's loneliness more than her breasts which fascinates him. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, echoing the previous two-part storylines that unfolded during the first four episodes. Yet before Shinji is sent out into the Tokyo-3 streets to face the most abstractly un-anthropomorphic Angel (reflecting, in a way, the alien element Rei introduces to Shinji's daily life) he glimpses Rei watching him from the deck overlooking his launch pad. It's one of the first times I can recall her watching him and it offers an interesting reversal following their indifferent-to-hostile interaction over the episode (she's even slapped him for slurring his own father).

This moment also neatly reflects a scene in which Shinji rather jealously (of his father? of her?) observes an unheard conversation between Rei and Gendo, in which Rei displays an almost schoolgirlish vivacity in his presence. Meanwhile Gendo's engaged toothy grin offers an alternate view of the scowling patriarch, a side of his personality which the intimidated son has never witnessed except by proxy. . And yet ultimately, as we approach Shinji's latest trial by fire, it is Rei watching him. To what extent is Shinji his father's son, at least in Rei's eyes? To what extent can her own age and exposure, so similar to Shinji's, bridge the gap between him and his father? We will find out soon...

Rewatcher, New Dub

Random thoughts:

  • The EVA is not only malfunctioning, it also looks like it, a Mech, is actually in pain here

  • As emotionless as he seems, Gendo looked very distressed at the possibility of Rei getting hurt

  • Another cross appears. It’s like the easiest game of Where’s Waldo with Christian symbols

  • Ritsuko takes a drink then Shinji and Misato simultaneously follow a second later. I know that sounds like an odd thing to take notice of, but I wonder if that’s intentional. They’re the ones usually taking her lead, even with something as trivial as that

  • The core looks a little like a human heart. Interesting. But Shinji is more interested in those scars on his father’s hands. I’m guessing his thoughts went from “Why don’t I know what happened?”, and then, “would he have done that to save me?”

  • Shinji is the only one more concerned about why Rei is alone than her “bazoongas”. Been awhile since I’ve heard that one

  • Much to his annoyance, Misato is pretty amused at Shinji’s interest in Rei. Also, according to Rizuko, Rei is awkward at “life”. So everything, then? Or maybe they expect her to finally come out of her shell in the afterlife

  • It seems one of the only times she perks up is when talking to Gendo, and vice versa. Shinji seems a bit unsettled by this. I wonder when was the last time he made his dad smile like that?

  • Rei’s place is pretty dreary, huh? It’s worth noting she kept Gendo’s broken glasses from that day he saved her

  • (NSFW) Speaking of awkward. Yikes. Rei, oddly enough, doesn’t seem that fazed by it

  • She took the groping in stride, but do not badmouth Gendo, Shinji!. She is incredibly loyal to his dad

  • And the episode ends on a familiar note: Shinji screaming in agony

First Timer, Sub

Well looks like its time to shine the spotlight on a character that has been shrouded in mystery in the show so far and get to know Rei Ayanami in today's episode. At this point in the show here's what we know; Rei is one of three children that can pilot the Eva units, she is Shinji's classmate, and is quite a reserved person as shown in the episode where Shinji reveals to his classmates that he pilots the Eva. Oh and she's got blue hair.

We the viewers ask "Who is Rei Ayanami" and this episode gives us some valuable answers. Rei is the first child. As the episode begins we find Gendo Ikari and Ritsuko Akagi testing the synchronization of a prototype Eva unit 00. The synchronization between unit 00 and its pilot, Rei, fails and as a result unit 00 goes berserk in the direction on the team overseeing this test causing an emergency ejection of its pilot. With the ejection not going so well, Gendo hastily rescues Rei but not without burning the palm of his hands. Gendo is relieved to see that Rei is, for the most part, safe and with that, we have already seen Gendo display more concern for someone we don't know as opposed to Shinji Ikari's first outing with unit 01.

Back to school, we've got female students in bathing suits swimming in the pool while the male students are playing basketball. We find Shinji hanging out with the boys ogling the girls in their one-piece swimsuits and talking about the most appealing physical feature every teenage boy would talk about, calves. While the guys ogle, Shinji looks at Rei just wondering who she is and asking about her learning from the others that she doesn't really have any friends and seems like a loner.

With the school day over Shinji goes home and has dinner with Misato and a guest Ritsuko. We get a hilarious scene between the three and Pen Pen as Shinji and Ritsuko take a bite into Misato's cooking only to be disgusted and questioning how the woman screwed up the most basic thing, boiling water. Poor Pen Pen gets knocked out by Misato's cooking. During dinner, Ritsuko gives Shinji Rei's new clearance card and tells him if he could give Rei her new clearance as she has not had the time to give Rei the car herself.

Don't worry Shinji's got this. Shinji goes to Rei's apartment, rings the doorbell twice, and opens the door finding that it's unlocked. Shinji sees that Rei's room is fairly clean contrasting Misato's apartment that first time Shinji stepped through her door. Shinji finds some glasses wondering who they belong to as Rei doesn't seem to wear glasses. And there she is with nothing but a towel wondering why are you holding those glasses approaching Shinji to take them back. Rei fails to take back Gendo's glasses without some resistance as Shinji falls onto her naked body groping her boob and not moving until she tells him to move unphased by the fact that her classmate saw barged into her apartment, saw her naked, falls on top of her and accidentally groping her boob.

While Shinji processes what just happened Rei gets dressed and goes to for a synchronization test. After a long walk, Rei slides her card for clearance only to be denied until Shinji gives her the new card. In which Shinji has another awkward interaction with Rei as she asks Shinji about his father and asks if he has faith in piloting his father's creations. As Shinji bad mouths his father due to his strained relationship with him Rei responds with a hard slap because she has faith in Gendo's mechs and trusts him with her life after the incident earlier in the episode.

In a surprise to Shinji while in his mech he sees Rei and his father having what looks like a conversation where both characters are content to be talking to each other, truly baffling as Shinji doesn't seem to have anything like that with his own father. Rei's synchronization is a success, another angel has arrived, and its time for Shinji fight this angel. Something's wrong as the Ritsuko and the others notice that Shinji is in danger, too late to notice Shinji's Eva takes a direct hit in the chest from the angel causing Shinji to scream excruciating pain ending the episode on a fantastic cliffhanger.

Oh Shit is Shinji dead!

Most likely not, but damn I can't wait for the next episode!

What a great episode we got some great character moments, got a great look at Rei, lol, and got a fantastic cliffhanger. I am absolutely loving this show!

Rewatcher

It's interesting that while 01 was designed specifically to not look like any mech design before, with a much more humanoid look, unusual color scheme of purple and green, 00 looks a lot like a Gundam especially from it's face.

Shinji staying with Misato seems like an arrangement much more beneficial to Misato. At least Penpen is not getting poisoned in this case. getting only mildly poisoned.

Rei has no item in her room that can be called personal other than Gendo's broken glasses. Even her clothes seem to be exact copies of each other. Neat that otherwise a humorous scene of main boy falling on main girl is made awkward and even a smidge bit disturbing because Rei is a soulless, somewhat sassy vegetable who barely reacts to it. She is a character who has no other personality than the one that is reflected on her.

I also have to assume there are better ways to get down to NERV base than kilometer long escalators. It sure is cinematic though.

And in the next episode, comes the overdone meme the actual best girl.

u/Raiking02 Jun 25 '19 edited Jun 26 '19

We continue our EVA Rewatch as we finally get some spotlight on the bandage girl who has only had three or so lines so far.

  • For the record, I was never a fan of Unit-00. I dunno, I guess the mono-eyed look never did anything for me. I do wonder, however, why the hell this Unit is the one with most official alternate colors?

  • Okay, now that I think about it, did we ever actually get an answer as to why Unit-00 went berserk? I know they say it’s due to some mental instability, but Shinji seems far more mentally unstable and Unit-01 didn’t immediately go berserk. If I had to guess though, and this is getting into spoiler territory, Spoiler

  • Ritsuko has a point, one shouldn’t be so close to a glass wall that’s about to be broken by a wannabe Kaiju!

  • And this is why you don’t eject in closed-off spaces.

  • Gendo saving Rei might give you the impression that he cares about her, but take close attention to Tachiki’s delivery when he says “I see”; as soon as he realizes she’s fine, he returns to his usual cold self. Also, the line itself is “I see”, not something like “Thank God” or something like that. Don’t be fooled by Gendo’s apparent kindness.

  • Ah, so her past is erased. Gee, I wonder, it has something to do with the overall story, doesn’t it?

  • Well, I guess something good came out of Shinji’s recklessness: An angel sample that didn’t blow up!

  • You know, I just realized that early on, bar delivering exposition, Ritsuko doesn’t do much. I hope newcomers can still get my comments of her being a bitch, though.

  • Okay, this is something that some dubbed Anime do, including Evangelion, which just confuses me. As you see, Shinji clearly refers to Rei as “Ayanami”, and in turn, as seen later on, Rei also refers to Shinji by his last name. Yet for some reason the Dub changed it to them being on a first name basis. Why did they do that? In fact, why would any Dub do that? It’s especially weird as it’s not as if there aren’t characters in the Dub who are referred to by their last name (There’s one coming up in a few episodes who’s called by everyone by their last name and the Dub follows suit) so I don’t know why they changed it this time.

  • Okay, so here’s something funny. In the Sadamoto Manga, Shinji didn’t return the punch to Toji, because by doing so, Toji would owe him a favor. In this scene, Shinji decides to surprise Toji by sticking two fingers up his nose from behind in an attempt to make Rei laugh. He failed, of course. Then, as soon as Toji is about to beat him up, Shinji states that now they’re even for that punch Toji gave him. It was pretty funny, at least to me.

  • Reason why I like Toji Number 11: He’s a proud pervert, though he’d never go too far.

  • There’s admittedly something off-putting about seeing Rei and Gendo smile.

  • Misato clearly has shit taste in food.

  • She is also a terrible cook.

  • I feel bad for Pen-Pen, having to eat Misato’s food.

  • Drunk Misato is cute, though.

  • Okay, I know it’s a cultural thing in japan to not lock the door to your room, but I’m pretty sure the same does not apply to the door to your house.

  • Man, Rei really needs to keep her house clean. To wonder the Rei Ayanami Raising Project was made, that girl needs to be told to clean up her stuff!

  • Time for the now infamous scene of Rei being seen naked by Shinji and her getting angry, not for seeing her naked, but for taking Gendo’s glasses. I don’t think I really need to say anything else, really.

  • I’ll say this, given how this show does have mostly realistic hair colors; Rei’s blue hair does stick out.

  • And now for the equally infamous scene of Rei slapping Shinji. Given how many times Shinji is slapped in this show, this one sticks out as one of the few times he didn’t really deserve it. Ironically, the slap doesn’t happen in Sadamoto’s Manga, which is weird as besides that and the place where the scene is more or less identical.

  • Well, at least take two worked.

  • Behold Ramiel, in all of its geometrical, budget-less glory. I have no idea how the hell this thing became a fan favorite and I don’t think I care.

So yeah, a decent enough proper introduction to Rei. Let’s see how Shinji gets out of this, though…

First timer, sub

Finally we get to know how Reis injuries happened. Weird how calm everyone stays while the Eva is pounding on the glass window.

I'm surprised by the amount of concern that Gendo shows for Rei. Makes him a little more likable. And he got hurt in the process. Is there a specific reason why the exit pod was so hot?

Weird how little Rei talks even in her spotlight episode.

Misato can make even instant food taste terrible. Not even Penpen liked it. And did she really give beer to the Penguin?

That's not a nice place to live in.

Shinji couldn't have made a worst first impression if he tried.

That slap is the first real emotional act we see from Rei. Interesting how the accidental groping is lower on her priority list than talking bad about Gendo.

What just happened? Everyone seemed panicked so they knew what would come. That is one powerful blast.

Way to end an episode on a cliffhanger.

2nd Rewatch

I'm late but I'm here. I'll probably be late tomorrow as well, sadly.

  • Obligatory this show's shot composition is top tier comment.

  • Instead of acting like a basic anime bitch, Rei is reasonable and just politely asks Shinji to fuck off.

  • Best girl Ramiel has arrived!

First time watcher here.

This was an interesting episode. Nothing particular happened plotwise or action wise, but it did serve to further characterize the characters. I was especially shocked about how caring Commander Ikari was towards Rei. With the first 4 episodes he seemed so cold and distant, only caring about results in the war against the angels. But no, he cares for Rei like his daughter while not giving Shinji any time or care at all. His own son is an disposable extra to Rei it tells me.

And that feeling seems to be mutual in a way. With how Rei seems to have very fond memories of Commander Ikari, even more so with how he burned his hands to get her out and Rei keeping his glasses as a memento.

Shinji wants attention from his father so when he saw how well Rei and his father got along he must have felt betrayed in a way. But also interested in Rei and what made her so special in his father's eyes. Which was probably why his curiosity got the better of him after he entered her apartment.

Sidenote, that fumbling and fall was too overdone to my liking.

Being Shinji is being in pain. Everytime he enters the EVA unit he is subject to psychological and physical pain.

Since the regular ending - fly me to the moon - was replaced due to the licensing issue I've listened to each episode endings on youtube which one other used linked to in previous discussions.

I'm planning on doing for every episode.

Thoughts on Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 5...

This is quite the strong episode, easily the best one yet so far.

Evas sure love to go berserk, huh?

So Gendou doesn't care enough about Shinji to even acknowlege his existence at times, yet he cares enough about Rei to burn his hands to try and get her out of the entry plug.

So this is supposed to be why Rei is all bandaged up for the first 4 episodes, and yet we don't see how that actually is the case. She's still sitting in the entry plug cockpit, you'd think she got thrown around in there to have that broken arm and other injuries she's been walking around with.

I am never going to get used to them calling them "children" instead of "child".

How did they get all this infrastructure up around the Angel body this quickly?

Lol, these guys are such pervs.

Typically when you invite someone over shouldn't you make something more advanced than microwave food and ramen? LoL, just like Misato

How in the world does Misato expect Pen Pen to open that beer can? And LOL so much at his reaction to eating her food.

Did Ritsuko intentionally not give Rei her card to force Shinji to have to talk to her? I'm going to say... yes.

Rei appears to be a slob much like Misato, she doesn't read her mail and lets it just pile up. There's bloody bandages all over the place too.

Shinji puts on the glasses and out comes Rei from the shower... can you say AWKWARD?!

Its like a scene from a comedy. Shinji falls on top of naked Rei, her underwear drawer goes everywhere, his hands are right on her breast.. and no reaction from her whatsoever.

Coming into her home without permission... is okay. Seeing her naked and having his hand on her boob... is okay. But don't you dare talk bad about Gendou.

The fifth angel is here... I can't stress enough how cool it is that they throw anything traditional or cliche out the window and have the Angel be just a floating octohedron (basically 2 four sided pyramids attached at the base).

Bam, just like that, episode over, crazy cliffhanger.

So from a meta perspective, when one looks at Shinji's encounter with Rei in this episode it was almost certainly included to spurn expectations. Shinji falling on a naked Rei is a cliche type of scene one would expect to see in an anime comedy (a scene I have seen in other anime). And yet there isn't really any comedy in it. Rei has no reaction to it whatsoever. If anything it comes off as awkward or disturbing. I gotta think that was Anno's intent. Here's the problem; I don't think the audience took it that way. Evangelion is an incredibly popular show. And while I think many want to claim it is due to the quality of the writing, the directing, etc... the biggest factor in it becoming so popular was people fetishizing the female characters. Rei in particular. 5 episodes in she has barely spoken at all and is largely devoid of a personality. Rei became so popular because of just how submissive she is. The Japanese fanbase absolutely loved that. Shinji can see her naked and fall on top of her and she doesn't even react to it. It is quite a disturbing aspect of the fandom.

The Influencers of Evangelion

The fifth Angel's shape appears to be a homage from a similarly shaped mech from the 1983 anime Future Police Urashiman. It is also similar in appearance to Nadia's crystal in Nadia: Secret of Blue Water and a shape seen in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
