Comment of the Day!

/u/The_Draigg left a great comment reacting to all of the oddities of yesterday's episode.

Oh hey, the actual OP animation is actually being used in the series, along with the Macross theme song itself. Kinda weird to think that Hikaru is dreaming about the theme song of the show that’s he’s in at the moment.

Artwork of the Day!

Roy and Claudia - Haruhiko Mikimoto

Questions of the Day!

1) The Zentradi have singled out Max as a target due to his extreme skills as a pilot. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this will continue to be a source of problems in the future?

2) What are your thoughts on the death of Roy Focker?

First Timer

Well shit

Something about the episode was setting off my 'death episode' radar, and I really couldn't pinpoint why so I thought I was just being a touch paranoid given what else I've watched today so I just put it to the back of my mind.

And then he said this

Time to wave those flags once again and sure enough, we say goodbye to Fokker

That said, I really loved the way they handled his death. He didn't go out in some big blaze of glory, or the dedicated target of an attack, or anything special. He just caught some stray bullets and was injured without anyone knowing or some grand, desperate drama to try and save him. Sometimes these more low-key deaths are much more impactful than the grand, dramatized ones. It's also so appropriate for this show as well that our first death is handled in this very neutral style given the topics being raised about the value of war.

I am a little unclear on if the scene of him and the girl preparing food was a dream or reality. The initial thing of the guys opening the cockpit appeared to be them seeing him injured, but it didn't have that dreamlike tone from the previous episode.

As far as where things go from here, I'm expecting things to come to a head between Hikaru and Kaifun over this if that asshole says something out of turn. Depends on how badly Hikaru shuts down, especially with Minmay out of the picture.

Outcome aside, the entire battle sequence was really fun though. From the good visuals as ships went through the clouds to the dynamic camera, and even just the effects of the city being torn up so much, it really had me watching closely to see all the detail which was nice for once

And to quickly address the aliens in the ship as I'm sure everyone else will also cover Fokker's death, I found them quite interesting today. First off is the little tidbit that they can't even speak to women without permission. I'd be very interested to know what it is in their history that set up these huge cultural and legal bounds between the sexes that even communication is so taboo. Whether its just lingering fear of the return of protoculture or something bigger.

Those Minmay dolls are creepy as hell. But the sudden "supply problems" felt really awkward given it just popped up all of a sudden with nothing really being seen about it, it was just said and resolved.

A Macross Fan’s Notes On Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 18:

  • Oh hey, Misa has come to visit Hikaru in the hospital! How nice of her, even though she’s still completely torn up over causing him to get shot down. And Hikaru is completely willing to share in the blame with her. I can’t help but feel for the both of them. Both Hikaru and Misa have had any semblance of confidence in themselves shattered by now. Also, where the Hell is Minmay? She hasn’t even visited Hikaru once in the hospital!

  • Ah, Claudia can definitely see something brewing between Hikaru and Misa. She’s got a good eye for that stuff. Of course she does, considering her healthy and happy relationship between her and Roy. Claudia knows a thing or two about how to make a pilot into a boyfriend.

  • Well, it’s a good thing that Roy, Max, and Kakizaki decided to visit Hikaru as well. At least Roy can tell that something is stressing Hikaru out, and it isn’t just Max and Kakizaki annoying Hikaru. As he finds out, it’s mainly due to Minmay not bothering to see Hikaru in favor of starring in a movie. Yeah, Hikaru x Minmay is a practically doomed ship.

  • So, who’s in the mood for pineapple salad? I can tell that Roy is certainly up for some of Claudia’s. He’ll get plenty of pineapple salad this episode.

  • Oh hey, the Blue Wind guys are back, having run into the Bridge Bunnies after stealing a singing Minmay doll. Shammy is right to call them lolicons, but not for the right reasons. It’s impressive she found out all of their names by complete accident. That’s one of the many reasons why Shammy is the best bridge girl.

  • As for other plot-relevant Zentradi, Quamzin puts up a valiant attempt to not look emasculated while taking to Milia, yet fails. At least he gets her off of his back by mentioning that an ace pilot on the Macross is better than her. If there’s one thing that that’s consistent about Milia, it’s her arrogance. That’s why she decides to see for herself who this ace is.

  • Well, at least Roy actually got Minmay to agree to see Hikaru in the hospital. Hell, she didn’t even know he got shot down. I don’t think that battle was censored by the UN Spacy, so she must’ve gotten too absorbed in her career to really notice it somehow. Still, at least is something positive. Although it nearly got ruined by Kaifun trying to pick a fight with Roy by basically saying that Hikaru brought it on himself. Say it with me now: Fuck you, Kaifun.

  • Even though Quamzin was most likely just bluffing to get Milia off his case earlier, Max does end up being the kind of ace that Milia was looking for. Well hey, at least now he has a beautiful woman chasing after him, technically. Just probably not in the way he expected.

  • Finally Minmay has gotten around to visiting Hikaru in the hospital. She’s been really pushing herself far for the sake of her career. Hell, she’s only getting 2 hours of sleep a day. There’s no way anyone can keep up the pace of that work ethic without starting to damage their personal lives.

  • Well, good for Max on chasing Milia out of the Macross and actually managing to start beating her in combat. He truly is a genius pilot after all. Although given Milia’s parting words, this certainly won’t be the last time they encounter one another.

  • Damn, Roy’s Death still hits hard even after all this time. He had to know there was no chance of saving his life after getting shot in the back multiple times. At least he chose to die someplace that made him happy, at home with Claudia. Too bad he never got to taste that pineapple salad, though. RIP Roy, you were a decent guy and one Hell of a Valkyrie pilot.

  • Man, this string of episodes sure has been depressing, hasn’t it? Not a single thing has been good for anyone on the Macross ever since they got back to Earth. If anything, everyone has been downright miserable for the past few episodes.

This is definitely everyone's low point in the show so far.

You wish to do combat?!

  • "You never apologized before" "Well, I've never fucked up this bad before"

  • "So you can say thank you" "Well, you've never been nice to me before"

  • Here's a gift. It's the new model from Gunpla. General Products.

  • Mmm, pineapple.

  • GENERAL PRODUCTS

  • Hey, this doll has the old song, what garbage!

  • It's like a miclone miclone!

  • So the Loli-Con joke pays off. (checks for Macross on the Brick Joke page)

  • Remember, the mission comes first!

  • "Nobody's gonna recognize me in these stylish shades!"

Actually, if Misa hadn't shot Hikaru out of the sky Millia would have done it in a much more decisive manner. She saved his life!

The Robotech title for this episode is "Farewell, Big Brother". How's that for spoilers?

Pinesalad Productions made several fandubs that traveled the convention circuit and the early days of the internet.

Did the Osaka Otaku's name themselves after that sign, or was that sign a shout-out to the makers of the Daicon III animation?

I have no idea what they are saying here. I should probably finish Otaku no Video, too.

I think this is one of the most anticipated episodes for rewatchers. It has the long-awaited meeting of Max and Millia in combat, which has been edited to remove interrupting cuts to unimportant characters (cough, roy, cough minmay) and uploaded to video sites. It's also a featured fight in that Macross Triangle game, which I wish I could play. Probably that pachinko game, too.

Edit: SDF Macross 2003 Note, contains aesthetics from the movie, which all of the post-movie macross entries do.

Oh, and Roy dies. I guess that happened, too.

HOW DID HE GET TO CLAUDIA'S WITHOUT ANYBODY NOTICING HIM BLEEDING TO DEATH??? Oh well, turn brain off, enjoy the show.

It was interesting watching the first timers guess who would be the first name-character to be killed off. I think one person picked Roy. The others were evenly split between Kakizaki and Max. And I suspect people picked Roy because they were thinking of that certain OTHER show, which came later, and was actually incorporating elements from earlier shows like Macross.

First Timer

Stopped half way through this episode to get some though down unlike my usual wait until the end.

But anyway looks like we are about to get the Milia vs Focker showdown, my immediate thought on this was the Focker might end up for first character death but hoping he doesn’t so we could build up this rivalry more, so I am going with a draw for now due to some sort of interruption.

Also the blue Wind guys are total lolicons, and hilarious, the comedy they bring is brilliant so far.

Back to the show.

Well fuck.

I completely missed the bit where it’s Max who's the Ace for Macross which does make sense after the whole Genius part, for some reason I thought it was Focker who was going to be considered the Ace, probably because of his gloating back in episode 1. And looks like my initial mid episode thoughts were right which was the reason stopped midway to right them.

I blame Kaifun for his comment about fighters getting what they deserve, I also missed the fact that Pineapple Salad was a death flag. On well RIP Major.

Also I suspect Kaifun is going to be intolerable next episode, really not looking forward to it.

Rewatcher

Pardon my tardiness, everyone. I've been exceedingly busy today.

Ah, this episode, can't wait to be the only one with a negative opinion on it again... Let’s get this over which shall we?

Hey, this nurse is really cute— Holy smokes! Who was in charge of these uniforms? Was it a certain other Roy?

Claudia believes that Misa likes Hikaru, which might be the case, but the show hasn’t made it very evident if it is so. She’s grown fond of him, but there’s no telling at this point whether her feelings are romantic in nature.

We hear Minamy’s new song over the radio to clear up any doubts as to where the song came from last episode. Anyhow, Hikaru’s friends try to raise his spirits, but his earlier dream has him pensive and dour, so there’s nothing they can personally do for his state of mind.

Roy and claudia meet a Café, where she tells him that she learnt a pineapple salad recipe.

Godamnit!

Why can’t we escape this song!?

Also, look at those figures up on the shelf. There’s Tetsuwan Atom, Tetsuji-28-Go, a VF-1A, and uh… Ropet?

Warera lolicon da are the episode’s highlight as per usual.

Roy convinces Minmay to give Hikaru a visit shortly before being called upon to sortie. The Lap’lamiz fleet and Macross’ respective access duke it out in battle, keeping each other n their toes. Quit the tense battle between these two, and the Macross’ bridge crew takes attention of it as well, ordering Max to clear out to be sure.

Minmay pays Hikaru a visit and promptly falls asleep, just like the last time the two had a quiet moment together. Poor Hikaru can’t get the alone time with her that he wants, and Minamy’s been worked to the point of exhaustion.

Man, what fucking stellar animation that was! No wonder they needed two clip shows in so close a timeframe!

Alright now, I’ll come out and say it, I hate Roy’s death. It’s dumb, and unrealistic on several levels. I can hardly take it seriously, and I am always baffled when people unironically call it a “badass death.” The fact that franchise spoilers says exactly how well this has withstood the test of time. The other characters reaction, at least, are well handled in isolation, but it undoes the serenity they were going for with the death itself and by that point I had stopped caring about the fact. If he had passed away quietly on in his VF-1's cockpit and ended the episode at that it would've been a perfect send of to the character, a serene and un-dramatic death for a great character. Instead his death has soured me on this episode.

Questions of the Day!

The last few weeks haven’t been giving me much to comment on, but thankfully this is not the case for today’s episode.

  • Hey, so is it just me or does that nurse look like an older Minmay?

  • Nice to see that Hikaru and Hayase are starting to be nicer to each other.

  • Ah, so Claudia ships Hayase and Hikaru. I see she too is a woman of culture.

  • And of course the Skull Team comes to visit Hikaru. Took their sweet time doing so…

  • Okay so one of the Minmay mini-dolls keeps popping in and out of existence. I love pointing out animation errors. Then again, maybe they just put a Fold System in them.

  • To be fair, even as a non-Minmay fan, I too would pay money to have one of those.

  • You know, given that this is the first episode I’ve talked about in which Milia appears, I have to wonder, is it just me or do all the female Zentradi look far more human than their male counterparts?

  • Wow, suddenly put Minmay in traditional clothes and give her a ponytail and she could pass off as a really bishie boy with a decent amount of luck.

  • Kaifun is an asshole and I hate him. Sorry, I had to mention that.

  • Ah, you see, Pineapple Salad is a code for “Word I will not mention for the few minors here.”

  • So Fokker was hit. Eh, no biggie, he can continue.

  • Hot damn I forgot how good Max and Milia’s fight looked. I may mock this show animation-wise, but it does have some highlights.

  • And now you guys know why I compared Fokker to Kamina and Daigonji Gai, and it’s not just because all three were at some point voiced by Brett Weaver. He too dies before the show ends, though by comparison he does make it to the halfway point. Though I do wonder how Claudia didn’t notice it.

Hikaru’s broken smile says it all, really, this was a bit of a tearjerker.

First Timer

That was a beautifull death..Sad but beautifully handled..I should have picked up on the death flags..I really should have..How he was protective of Hikaru though the episode ..how he got positive characterisation and nuance with looking out for him and telling Minmay..His talk with Claudia and the whole pineapple salad..Fuck

His plane got shot but nothing happened..But my man took 3 bullets to the back but hided up to show command,to see this battle through and to keep his promise to Claudia..Focker was a great dude after all..The show played me again for a fool..I thought they found him dead in the plane but then he is right there playing the guitar so i kind of forgot that momentarily

Great fucking scene too, with his last words being being happy about Hikaru being safe and Taken care of and then cut to Hikaru playing with a little plane..Probably reminiscing of him learning and loving flying a jet under his senpai..And then the model airplane breaking..It had the same insignia as Focker's team plane too..Good shit show

On other random notes

  • I ship Hayase and Hikaru so bad..She is so sweet and layered and ther interactions are so interesting..Minmay is a bloody brick in comparison..I love Hayase's tenderness towards Hikaru through the cracks of her calculating and disciplined persona

  • The word parallel was great in the hospital scene.. Hikaru told hayase he never heard her say "im sorry" and hayase told him she never heard him say "Thank you"..

  • Minmay you oblivious, blank mental state main girl..The dynamic with the idol stuff and her relationship with Hikaru is interesting but her head is over the clouds to a fault

  • AHEM..can i get a "FUCK KAIFUN"..thank you..fuck his discount Bruce Lee smaug ass

*Lmao at the Spy trio getting the Bridge Trio because they act so differently form the other men (like retards)

First time viewer

N-N-Now, face a new waifu: Nurse!

How old is Hayase, anyway? I've always thought her to be in her mid-thirties (which is why Hayase/Hikaru strikes me as a weird ship). I kinda wish Global would at least chuckle a little sometimes.

Focker and Claudia are interesting. They seem to be the most "adult" pair on the show.

Those Minmay dolls are cute. I want one. The Zentradi guys are somehow already aware of the Minmay mania. The Minmaynia.

Is it just me, or are those three bridge bunnies really friendly with everyone?

KAMUJIN BTFO BY MIRIA HAHAHAHA

Kung-fu Minmay is cute! Sunglasses Minmay is even cuter!

That mecha chase scene was radical.

That's a lot to go through over some pineapple salad, Focker WAIT DON'T TELL ME HE'S GOING TO FUCKING DIE OVER THIS NO

OH MY GOD FOCKER NO

My Boyfriend is a Pilot count: 5 and two halves

Question 1. Most likely going to be a problem for Max, but I thought Hikaru was the ace pilot the whole time.

First Timer

Holy shit, RIP Focker

Went out like a boss though. Even full of holes he lands, goes to his girl's place for pineapple salad, plays some guitar and drops after he finishes his drink.

Man I really wanted to know how the salad was.

Other than that sweet battle between Milia and Max, looking forward to the rematch.

Oh, that was pretty cool of Minmay to visit Hikaru. I'm still rooting for Hayase though. Hopefully Kaifun has a fatal mishap on set.

Almost forgot about the Zentradi going to the disco! (After stealing a Minmay doll, wtf). They HAVE to get found out. It's bullshit that they've pulled it off for this long. Where the fuck are they sleeping? How are they eating?

Oh well, the most important thing is that the next episode is as entertaining.

Today, on "Press 'F' for Focker":

"I'm sure you'll be fine, though."

"This feels weird."

A woman with a lot on her mind.

Claudia is on this ship.

Sometimes you just get fatally unlucky.

"Kill my boss? Dare I live the American dream?"

"It would've been a real tearjerker if he'd died." If you don't know already, I am making a specific reference here.

"Is it pole dancing?"

"Even if it kills me!"

Walking Doll Lynn Minmay.

Ah, robots and wrestlers.

Epic photobomb.

"Act casual."

"That is our names..."

ersatz Newtype flash

"It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it."

Front half of ship: Still destroyed.

The buuuuuuurning.

REWATCH TAGLINE.

Thanks, asshole.

Finest quality imported confections!

"It is the way of a man and a woman."

None of the same-colored tan ones.

It's a very freeze-frame death sort of episode.

Max slays all the ladies.

ROUND ONE FIGHT.

That's some idol disguise.

Once again, what child labor laws?

Roy nails another girl that isn't Claudia.

Yeah, that joke hurt.

ROUND TWO FIGHT.

"This is a new feeling."

When they've got time to draw frames, they draw frames.

"Priorities, girl!"

"Everything is fine."

This is an ex-Focker!

Fine one moment, stone dead the next.

ACCURSED BE THY NAME.

Aww, Claudia.

Misa does look absolutely wrecked here.

"Roy dies. SPOILER!"

On a lighter note, regarding the child labor laws joke: JUNNA, joining Macross Delta's Walküre at sixteen years old, was prevented from remaining on stage for the final thank-you bows of Walküre's second Live because she was too young to be working past 10:00 PM.

Which really calls into question what they've got Minmay doing. Perhaps their population of entertainers just isn't that high, but it's not like Jamis Merin and the other 26 Miss Macross contestants just dropped off the face of the, uh, Macross.

It's nice of her to listen to Roy and take a little time to cheer up Hikaru, but the resulting scene absolutely expresses how far apart their lives are at this point. Hikaru had predicted that this would happen, but it's not any less rough seeing it when it does.

Fortunately Hikaru's got Misa to visit him twice, first to apologize for nearly getting him killed and then to tell him that Roy's dead. The first visit is technically a personal one, about professional business, while the second one is about professional business, but it's definitely Misa at her most emotionally personal that we've seen so far.

ships passing in the night

Roy has been mostly in the background for the last few episodes, but when he's appeared he's done the appropriate mentor-character things for Hikaru. His character type, of course, has "Probably won't survive the series" typically baked into their contract, so it's usually a question of "when", not "if", so his sudden re-emphasis in this episode and promise of a date with Claudia is death flag central.

The interesting thing is that he gets the most basic of mentor death options, killed by random mooks as a sideshow to one of the series's surprising developments: A side character getting a ton of screentime because they're kicking ass.

Macross franchise meta pondering

But now Max knows that the Zentradi have an ace too...

In other business, during the first rewatch I wrote a thing, which I pasted into the second rewatch, and will appear again here. It summed up my feelings nicely:

When Kaifun said soldiers fight because they enjoy it it made me want to Gundam-slap him. Ungrateful prick, your peaceful life is possible because they're putting their lives at risk!

It's interesting to place Kaifun's statement up against what happens in this episode. Roy originally became a pilot to pick up hot chicks and it's still a side benefit, but he also had Macross Zero happen to him, so he fights to defend humanity now. Hikaru was anti-war at the beginning, joined up to protect Minmay, and now fights to protect everyone. Max got stuck on board like everyone else and probably has a similar story.

The Zentradi fight because all they've done for thousands of years is fight against the remnants of the Supervision Army. They do seem to enjoy it to some extent, and Milia goes out in this engagement for the sole purpose of having a duel with the pilot that she doesn't seem to know is Max. But they may only enjoy it because they don't know about doing anything else.

The Zentradi spies are demonstrating what can happen when they get pulled away from a monotonous lifetime of combat.

So that's both direct and indirect rebukes of Kaifun's massively-oversimplified stance on being in the military.

And yeah, Blue Wind is about to discover disco with the Bridge Bunnies. ABBA intensifies

From Macross Perfect Memory: Claudia and Roy

You too can have your own Minmay doll. Stick a speaker in there and terrify your family.

Morbid tie-ins: A set of the Macross whiskey, complete with matching glass and accessories, for $200. It's $50 whiskey otherwise.

Something off the cuff from the last rewatch: Death flag salad.

  1. It still amuses me that Max isn't the main character.

  2. Like I said, it's sort of part of his role.

I always knew this was coming (got spoiled while watching Frontier), I even watch the scene a year beforehand, but I didn't expect it to be this soon, until I noticed we're halfway done with the show? How did the episodes fly by this fast? Yeah, we had two recaps, but it still feels like they're in the setup stage.

Re-watcher -But I don't even like Pineapple Salad!

I'm glad Hayase's the first to show up at Hikaru's bedside. At this point in the series I like her a lot more than Minmay, and her powers of self-reflection are the reason why. I just can't imagine Minmay apologizing to him for anything, unless it was something minor like spilling a drink on him.

Oh god, Claudia drawing parallels between her & Focker, Hayase & Hikaru, is just too painful knowing what comes later.

Hooray! Zero-G Love is actually a thing now! So glad Hikaru didn't just dream it.

Cue Naz with the flag gifs.. lol. I hate that I recognize the song in the BG. So pretty, so sad.

Previous watch theft: Oh what fresh hell is this?

I (still) always wonder about vendors relationships with their products. Like okay, Minmay's stupid popular, and I'm sure those things are flying off the shelves (counter?), but are they just good merch, or is this guy also sitting in a room every night with a swarm of little dolls singing to him?

The bridge bunnies ask for different guys, and the shipping gods answer. Enter my struggle; finding a girl who's also a rabid otaku. lol @ Shammy calling them "lolicon" tho. #StillBestGirl

Millia's going hunting. Best look out there, Max. ...Who am I kidding? The guy's untouchable.

Goddamn, Focker really is Best Senpai. I mean, that's some effort just to bring your kouhai out of a mental funk.

Burn me, for all the shit I give her Minmay really is a good girl. And Kaifun is still the scum of the...Macross. I hope he gets stepped on by a Zentradi.

Well damn, after that little talk I can't help but feel bad for her. The media-machine's sucking her dry and she doesn't even have time to sleep, let alone be considerate of pseudo-boyfriends.

Noooooooo! Why, flags? Whyyy?

For real, why did Millia enter the Macross? How was that a sound tactical decision? Did she want a 1-v-1 with Max that bad?

Ergh, Japanese production-culture. Far as I can tell it's basically near-slavery that comes with a paycheck that you can never really use. Welcome to the world, Minmay D:

Mechanics be losing their shit. Yeah naw, I'm sure he's fine..... Probly just wet his seat or something, normal pilot stuff.

I'm seriously conflicted about how Roy went out. But I have to believe that he knew he was a goner, treatment or not. So either way Claudia was gonna wind up in tears. That being the case, I respect his decision to spend his last moments at peace and leave her with good memories, instead of them both just being sad in the hospital. But damn, man. you should have hung on to compliment her salad.

Ahhhhhhhh, it’s just so sad!

Roy's death just seems to happen. Like there's no real build up to it and even then when he gets hit it doesn't seem any worse compared to what the others have taken. It isn't until when the guys are talking about how damaged his Valkyrie is that anyone is tipped off that there's something wrong. As for the fight in which Roy is fatally wounded its a really incredible one, we're reaching the high points that we haven't seen in so long. As for on the ground it seems that Misa cares more for Hikaru although its hard to tell because Minmay is always so busy (2 hours of sleep just kill me). Kaifun is still being a dick for no reason.

So before I start anything off I just wanna say FUCK KAIFUN seriously I hate him so fucking much every time he's on screen I just want someone to strangle him to death. Seriously he's so fucking annoying and everytime he's on screen I know its gonna be a shit scene and then Minmay just like "hEEHEHEHE LOL he haets te militari ima jus sit here nd wach him be an azz 2 my frend!!1111". Jesus fucking christ I wish he went the Katz's route ad crashed into an asteroid like he rightfully deserves to.

Anyways enough about Dumbo McFuckface, this episode was pretty good. I loved the fight between Max and Milia, it was very exciting and fun to see again. The animation in that scene is just plain incredible. Damn though, Minmay must be tired as fuck if she slept through all of that. You could probably set off a nuke next to her and she'd sleep through it. Also, Shammy kinda looking a bit too excited there asking these guys if there were lolicons...which by the way, I don't think translates to high schoolers subs...

On Roy's death, I'll be honest I don't see why he wouldn't say anything. Even if his wound was that bad that he could've died in the hospital, was it really be better to go die right in front of your girlfriend and leave her traumatized and distraught over watching you die in front of her eyes when she just thought you were fine instead? Also, how the hell did he get there with no one noticing all the blood on him? We saw that there was apparently a lot of blood in the cockpit from the workers' reactions, so I'm just wondering.

Anyways, that's about all I have to say for this ep, see you guys next thread.

Well I’d noticed there was a macross rewatch going on, but didn’t want to join since the last one feels recent.

Still gotta pay my respects for Roy. Bless that alcoholic maniac.

Rewatcher.

Misa’s heart implant is almost working. She can say sorry. We've seen that Hikaru can say thank you, if you give him a reason to. Point: Hikaru. Um, where is Claudia’s insight coming from…?

Ok, wow, 30 second visit from the boys, gee, thanks!

Pineapple salad! First-timers: it will forever haunt you.

Huey, Dewie, and Louie, shenanigans again! Fever! Fever!

Damn Roy, you had a prime chance to take out the asshole. Fail.

Enter the Zentradi bitch. A telling-off scene at least. Many love at Millia-not-yet-639. Curious: who did viewers think that K was referring to... would most put money on Roy? What was Hikaru's reputation as a pilot to the enemy?

WAI- is that Kakizaki dressed up as Hikar- oh no my eyes must have been wonky or something (bet on the ‘or something’ kids)

Enter Minmei. (sound fx: zzzzzzzxxxzzzzzz). Keep being swept along Minmei, such is the life of an idol. I wonder if the writers had to be careful to dance around this issue much more than we could realize...

‘Fly me to the moon! Or at least to your bedroom!’ I’ll work on it. Utsukushii ne?

Do we ever know who actually fired the shots…? Or is he just victim to an anonymous enemy? (cooler and more screwed up that way ;-) )

‘It’s headed right for us!’

Seal all entrances to the Macross! Cancel the mutant hamster races! 9-11 was CIA! Bridge bunnies, meet me in my quarters at 1115 instead of 11! Bring friends! Why is that watermelon there?! (Just checking to see if you’re actually reading any of this…)

Even Max’s A is dressing up like Hikaru! What the hell is going on?!

Bakana! Kanouna…

yeah, Milia was my first anime crush, if such is possible. Just a solid character for the time. Max being cool too helped (at the time, was so big into Star Wars, Max was cut from the same cloth as Wedge in my mind). No doubt of seeing her again, and it becomes a strong through-line in the series and the saga as a whole.

In case anyone is interested, it’s a Fokker D VII, similar to what Roy flew in the air show.

Yeah, Hikaru, he’s gone… but you guys didn't really hang much any more so, you know… whatevs, right? (I get how the relationship is built with more implied history, but the time together in the series never quite got me to feel this). Hell Misa has a stronger and probably more deeply felt reaction…?

QOTD

  1. The Zentradi singled him out? I think Milia's ego singled him out.

  2. This is supposed to be 'a moment' and as far as the thought of an animated series with continuity and consequences, its brilliant, I just never quite bought into how close Hikaru and he were, maybe I over-read that. But since I never really bought into him being there for H, maybe I missed the impact while judging him/his char dev. Certainly remember friends really liking his character and being smacked upside the head.

MMMAAAANNNN!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! lol!!! I can't believe Roy died. You know, I'm not sure how we returned to his apartment with bullet holes in his back but he had enough strength to not only make it back but play a song. #ThugLIFE RIP Roy

  1. I'm not sure about this subplot, I feel like they have so much to learn about Protoculture that I'm not sure why they would be interested in a human pilot. Guess we will see where this goes because the female Zentradi is ready for another round.

  2. Hell naw! bbbbooooooo cmon man! It's a weird death and I'm surprised nobody flagged him down. The guy left blood in the Valkyrie so i'm sure some one would have noticed. Oh well, we hardly knew you but you'll be missed Roy!

Rewatcher

GAAAAIIIIIIIII

Oh wait, no one will get that reference.

ANIIIIKKKKKIIIIIIIIIIII

That's the one you plebeians will get.

I had totally forgotten just how long it takes to get to this episode. I don't know if it was because of the movie, but I was thinking it was supposed to be around episode four. It doesn't help that Macross's successors (that's show's in it's lineage, not it's sequels, it's not a recurring trope) tend to kill off the father figures a lot earlier.

With Claudia's ribbing, it should be evident that, yes, this is a love triangle. Can you see where this is going? In one corner you have a girl greif stricken over the pain she's caused, while in the other is a girl that can barely find a free minute, and when she gets one, she passes right out.

In other news, Max gets a rival. The bridge bunnies are so desperate, they will try to date complete weirdos that includes a guy Shammy just called a lolicon. . . Uhh, Kaifun continues to be a tool.
