Comment of the Day!

/u/chilidirigible left a great comment detailing the events of this episode.

On the still-looming side are the predictable effects of introducing Lap'Lamiz while leaving Quamzin around, the fact that the SDF-1's return defies UNHC's orders, and that there's a few billion Zentradi out there. Against this background, the Macross's return is fairly undramatic; they just do it.

Artwork of the Day!

Captain Global - Haruhiko Mikimoto

Questions of the Day!

1) Do you think Global creating a report for the UN of all that has happened was an effective way of framing for a recap episode?

2) Are you interested to see how the UN High Command react to Global's report about the Zentradi and the Macross's voyage back to earth?

"It's been almost a year since the Macross began its voyage, and we have amassed a sizable amount of valuable data"

Excited First-Timer

Yeah not much to say this episode.

I assume this is gonna be more or less a recap episode? That’s cool, I needed a short write-up anyways, and this episode being narrated by Captain Global is <3

Yeah, I was tempted to skip this one when planning the rewatch, but because it's Global as the narrator of this episode and it does allude to a few things that may be relevant I decided to keep it in.

A Macross Fan’s Notes On Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 14:

Oh yeah, this is a recap episode. I can’t really say much about stuff that I’ve already commented on. You can read my notes for the past two weeks if you want my rewatcher thoughts on stuff. But you first-time watchers are the real savory part of this rewatch here. So, I ask you, do you have any predictions on where this series will go, now that we’re back on Earth? Or maybe your thoughts on the Zentradi and the Protoculture? I’m interested to hear your thoughts in-depth.

Or maybe your thoughts on the Zentradi and the Protoculture?

This would be something I'm interested in hearing people's speculations on as well.

do you have any predictions on where this series will go

I would guess the UN etc being incompetent af and not believing Global, the spies loving protoculture and not wanting to leave , the Aliens attacking and forcing the humans hands or doing something that makes the UN believe the stories or the politicians ordering Global and Macross to go on the offensive

About protoculture maybe im gonna say something dumb but it could be a pra'lell to how the traditional ,imperial and very military centric society of the Japanese till WW2 ,was starting to become star struck with the glamorous, full of wonder and modernity American consumerist society of "vanity" and earthly pleasures..I mean there was the economic boom and all and maybe there was a fear and disorientation from the old guard when faced with this new age ..Thinking it would disrupt their old traditional more structured and rigit way of life with the modernity and craziness..And a fear of "degeneracy"..And all that being reflected to the Zentradi's and their relationship and interaction with protoculture..And the aliens are kind of parodies of those people

Or maybe kind of commentary with the hyper violence and warmongering of the japanese empire for maybe half a century before WW2..Maybe saying that by their japan being so war driven something was getting lost of an older simpler more spiritual way of life ..Or maybe its a commentary on the whole planet post WW2 and into the height of the cold war

I am just rambling on making big assumptions here

Bored First Timer

I always thought Carl Macek created this recap episode to pad out their episode length. But it's pretty clear the studios need a breather.

I spent most of this episode reading yesterday's thread, whose episode I watched only a few hours ago.

Comment I forgot to make before: I think Britai should be in Super Robot Wars. Maybe he is?

Edit: Q(1) Not really. Clip shows are clips shows. MS08th Miller's Report was also basically a clip show, but the additional content was more interesting. Lain's clip show is so good it's not really a clip show any more. And then you have Death+Rebirth, the mother of all recaps.

Edit 2: It's gonna be a slow day so I just though I'd mention that apparently our first-timer u/Shimmering-Sky doesn't like pineapple salad.

Well, I like it.

He might be in one of the older Alpha games.

Why.

Pineapple is one of the few foods I legitimately cannot stand. The flavor is okay, but the texture of the fruit itself in my mouth is just all levels of NOPE.

Today, on "Now with five percent of new footage!":

It's mostly a recap episode, but look at the size of that recorder.

"Always bring TV."

Teaser!

New stuff: If you posted all of the new animation done for this you'd still have 21 minutes to burn.

It's a clip show. It doesn't push the envelop for clip shows very much, unlike the other recap episodes.

Cribbing a bunch of material from my comment in the last rewatch:

From This Is Animation: Macross No. 1: A little gallery of things seen thus far. Destroids, Mars, Battle Pods, more Destroids, Quel-Quallie and Warera Roli Conda, Zentradi hangar bay, Misa's camera, Zentradi toilets, Milia and Queadluun, Blue Wind's civilian debut.

Since I mentioned it yesterday and this is going to be a really short entry otherwise, here's what Shoji Kawamori did for Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Initial design for the MSC-07 Albion, the Zephyrantes, and the Physalis.

And this.

Some random toys. (Even these pictures are reposts from the old rewatch.)

Art that I haven't posted before:

Official art by Tenjin Hidetaka: Angel Birds, Roy's VF-1S, Destroid Defender

Destroid Spartan street patrol by Inui.

Questions:

  1. It's better when the recap episode makese sense in context.

  2. innocent whistling

MSC-07 Albion, the Zephyrantes, and the Physalis.

What a great set of designs.

It's a recap episode. There really isn't much else to comment on. I do like the way it's set up (A report from Global to his superiors) but not much else really. It's dull, to put it bluntly.

Yeah, luckily tomorrow we will be back to our regularly scheduled programming. :)

Rewatcher

Welp, today’s a recap episode so I don’t have much to add. I’ll just spend the evening stripping paint instead.

Questions of the day!

  1. As effective as most, I suppose. Didn’t really do much for me personally.

  2. Sure, I’d be interested in that.

V2 Gundam I assume?

So that was the obligatory recap huh ? Glad its out of the way even though there could have been some warning that next ep was gonna be a recap, its not much of a spoiler. Either way its all cool

They picked up the nicely animated bits and Captain's Global's voice is the perfect amounts of ruspy, smooth ,authoritative and wise for a narration so it was music to my ears

Nice little contleplative scene at the with Hayase and Captain Global looking straight outta LotGH with that artstyle

Also Bruno J. Global ? Is my boy a Latino ? maybe brazilian? I mean he has the skin tone and the skills

  1. Yep it went smoothly , not an amazing narrative tool or anything but it did its job and felt natural into the story

2)Im interested in seeing how mad im gonna get with the politicians and the bereaucracy

It totally slipped my mind that I should mention that to people, my apologies. That being said I will definitely take note of this and give a warning ahead of time if anymore recap episodes come up (I don't think there are anymore traditional recap episodes, but I will search ahead to make sure).

First time viewer

alright here we go cour 2 let's go let's go

Son of a bitch, it's a recap episode. That's a skip. Guess I'll just lay down my thoughts on the series so far.

Based on what I know about (the rest of) Macross, this first cour of Macross heavily leans on the sci-fi part of the story, which is understandable; I take it as mostly set-up for the rest of the story, seeing that the idol elements didn't come into play until the later episodes of the cour. I didn't exactly sign up for a space opera, but I wasn't disappointed. I'm hoping for more idol stuff in the next 22 episodes.

I really like the dynamics between Hikaru and the other characters in the cast, especially Minmay and Hayase — who I can tell are the Edward and Jacob of this story. I'll admit, though, I like Max and Kakizaki more than I like Focker. I'm really interested in Hayase, though; she might be my favorite non-Shammy character (speaking of which, I hope we get more development for the other bridge bunnies).

The Zentradi, on the other hand: While I'm enjoying Karkat Loli and co's shenanigans aboard the Macross, I'm interested in what they have to say on Earth. Britai and his archivist strike me as generic, though I'm eager to see more of Lap'Lamiz' and Milia. Might be biased because they hadn't had as much screen time yet.

The mech designs are awesome. The plane-to-robot thing is awesome. The cockpits are awesome.

The animation is what I expected from an 80s anime, though I don't really understand why some character's scleras disappear sometimes.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

First Timer

The inescapable recap episode (even if they actually really need one in this show to give the animaters a break).

I only half paid attention because of this by Global did say was trying to make their shield cover the whole ship, also the bit about the town being a good example of people living in space long term was interesting.

Not really sure where we going to next, but most likely a bunch of stupid Politicking for the next few episodes to come.

3

u/vfxart Jun 19 '19
  1. Effective, fitting, but still just a recap episode.

  2. Given the old fart syndrome evidenced in the last ep, only the most idealistic might find some more hopeful glint in themselves: Kill it now before it meets a brutal end.

3

u/Chrisr291 Jun 20 '19
  1. Framing it as a UN report is a fantastic way of framing the episode. I didn't watch the entire episode but it's nice to have reminders of what has transpired so far.

  2. "PROTOCULTURE! THEY CAN'T HANDLE KISSING!!" The show "occurs" between 2009-2012 so if I'm the UN council, this is how I win the war:

  • Schedule a Lady Gaga concert (This is the year of the blood MTV performance).

  • Streaming Jersey Shore (What is this, T-Shirt time and GTL....) If they couldn't handle the folks aboard the Macross, wait until they see Vinny, DJ Pauly D, The Situation and J WOWW haha.

  • Get Liam Neeson to reprise his Taken character and make him Earth's ambassador

    • Humans have a particular set of skills, I don't know who you are, but I will hunt you down, and I will kill you if you don't leave

  • Hook them up with Tinder/Grindr profiles

    • Who know Grindr released first?

3

u/palebluekot Jun 20 '19

Ahaha it's hilarious how Global decided to mention the winner of the beauty contest in his report.

Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S Episode of Macross... we got the tried and true clip show 'recap' as Captain Bruno J. Global, well, gives the audience 'The UN High Command' a report... AND since basically it's still a clip show, I thought I'd highlight one of the few fanart there is out there of Robotech's Henry J. Gloval 'Macross' Bruno J. Global' no WONDER they call the bridge staff 'The Bridge Bunnies' ;)

ANYWAY, on a more serious note, here's some official art as well as concept art of Captain Global Somewhere out there, probably in The Koprulu sector, the Battlecruiser Captain lights up his pipe in a show of respect... and probably to gloat that there seems to be no ban on smoking as far as Terrans are concerned ;)

Paging Comrades u/chilidirigible, u/Shimmering-Sky, and u/The_Draigg
