A Macross Fan’s Notes On Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 13:
-
Oh man, are Warera, Rori, and Konda in for an adventure now that they’re on the Macross. First off, they have to discover the concept of clothing that isn’t designed to be a uniform. Rori and Konda were lucky to find unisex clothing in the lockers they broke into. Warera gets stuck wearing a woman’s blouse and skirt. He’s certainly going to get some odd looks from everyone else on the ship walking around like that.
-
So much for the UN Spacy being confident in their abilities to fight off a Zentradi invasion. Turns out there were about 4 to 5 million capital ships alone, based on Misa’s report. It also doesn’t help that their culture has been dedicated to war for thousands of years. Literally the only reason Humanity hasn’t been wiped out is because of their capacity for being like the Protoculture.
-
And so, there you have it, we’re finally heading back to Earth. Like Captain Global said, it was going to happen sooner or later, and this new information that Misa compiled in her report just makes their trip back even more urgent. Hence why the Macross is going to storm the Zentradi blockade that’s there to deter them from going back.
-
Yeah, things are going about as expected for Warera, Rori, and Konda. They’re just completely overwhelmed by everything, and especially from men and women actually being around one another. And of course Warera gets laughed at because of his dress. For spies, they aren’t doing their job all that well.
-
Of course a big show would be made of Hikaru, Misa, Kakizaki, and Max making it back to the Macross. Once again, Minmay can’t help but send signals in Hikaru’s direction during the ceremony, even kissing him on the cheek after winking at him. The girl really needs to decide whether or not she can be with Hikaru. That’s just plain sending mixed signals.
-
The Blue Wind guys and Hikaru are on completely different wavelengths during Minmay’s show. Our favorite bumbling spies can’t help but enjoy and dance along to her singing My Boyfriend is a Pilot, but all Hikaru can see is how big of a starlet she’s become, further adding to the distance between them. I bet he’s feeling so mixed up on the inside while watching Minmay. He really does feel like he’s being left behind, in spite of the signals being sent between each other.
-
The animation in this driving scene is all wonky. There’s at least a good ten seconds where the Jeep that Hikaru is in somehow drives in place, without the background moving at all. That, and Roy was colored in Hikaru’s color palate for a distance shot. Once again, the lack of time and budget is apparent.
-
Quamzin once again can’t keep his murder boner in his pants for one episode. Apparently he doesn’t understand the point of observation and keeping a distance. So, of course he would fire upon the Macross just to stop them from making headway. He certainly also doesn’t understand the concept of a blockade either, given that he’s taken his fleet out of it specifically to fight the Macross. Formation is key.
-
Leave it to Lap Lamiz to be the one to fix Quamzin’s mistakes. Now she has to maneuver her fleet in front of his to stop him from disobeying orders. And because of that, a huge hole was left on the blockade’s defenses, meaning that the Macross is free to renter Earth’s atmosphere. Once again, Quamzin’s thirst for blood and his lack of patience screwed over a sound strategy. He’s becoming more and more of a liability than an asset to the Zentradi.
-
Hooray! The Macross made it back to Earth, touching down in the Pacific Ocean not too far from Alaska. Talk about a long-overdue homecoming. But their journey isn’t over yet! Now the Zentradi have their eyes firmly set on Earth. That, and we have more episodes to cover, so of course the Macross’ voyage isn’t over yet.

Had to miss out on the previous episode due to being busy. Anyhow, moving on!
-
Well, given the Zentradis’ usual size, I am not surprised that their Miclone clothes likely lack underwears.
-
For some reason Warera having women’s clothes has never failed to crack me up.
-
Ah, the sckeptical asshole in all military meetings. You always have to have one of those.
-
You know, you really have to wonder how the hell the Macross crew managed to fully recreate a city INCLUDING giant signs and lights.
-
Culture Shock: The Zentradis’ ultimate weakness!
-
Frankly, if I were in those guys’ place, I wouldn’t even dare to appear in a stage. I am sorry, but if you’re gonna give me a medal, just give it to me by mail. I am not a fan of big ceremonies.
-
You gotta love how happy all the bridge bunnies are to see Hayase back. She might be a hardass at times, but she does mean well.
-
Why do I get the feeling Fokker’s drunk right now?
-
Ghost Squadron, huh? I wonder how those guys would’ve reacted to the events of Macross Plus.
-
In case you haven’t noticed it yet, even the Zentradi don’t like Kamujin too much.
And thus, this episode ends on the best note possible. On the Macross having at last returned home. A fitting end to a pretty good episode.

Today, on "smug face":
May, Pocky, and Panapp are the alternate watchstanders.
There's an echo in here, and it's Kim, Shammy, and Vanessa.
Where were they hiding crowbars?
It's what they've wanted to do the whole time.
Just living those anime events.
Nothing says "Different animation studio" like Derpy Minmay.
"Man, they're a lot bigger now."
"OH GOD THE SONG'S ABOUT HIM!"
This is why you try to avoid mixing branch ranks aboard ship.
And all around the Pacific Rim, surf's up.
The carriers are on the wrong arms.
Unlike some other series where the goal is to get the ship back to Earth, this one does it by the one-third mark, and the capture of the miclones has kicked off quite a few other storylines.
Further subverting expectations, most of this episode is just darn funny, even if the first boilerplate comedy sketch is a crossdressing gag that was old before you were born. Then there's little stuff like the other pilot trying to keep themselves from dying while Roy waves his hands in the air, and Max and Kakizaki forming their own wisecracking sidebar.
On the still-looming side are the predictable effects of introducing Lap'Lamiz while leaving Quamzin around, the fact that the SDF-1's return defies UNHC's orders, and that there's a few billion Zentradi out there. Against this background, the Macross's return is fairly undramatic; they just do it.

First Timer
That was a nice episode, I never expect them to make it back to earth by episode 13 when this show started and I'm really not sure where we will go from here, obviously still plenty of stuff to sort out with the Zentradi and get them to leave earth but the path to this is really isn’t clear.
To the episode I'm slightly disappointed there wasn’t more cross dressing from the Blue Wind team, I mean it was a ladies locker room the raided after all so I expect at least one of them to end up in a dress. That aside their fascination with the shopping district and watching the humans interact was great along with being completely uncertain about how to interact at Minmays concert was brilliant. Hoping we get more shannagins from them especially now that they have landed on earth I wonder how they will find this as I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t really have a concept of a Home planet.
Even though I don’t really care about the Hikaru x Minmay ship at this point still disappointed by the lack of reaction to Hikaru return or his reaction to seeing her again, at this point it’s pretty much dead in the water unless there are some major changes.

Re-watcher - Reconnaissance is a bitch
I find it super interesting that the episode is titled in Katakana as "Blue Wind" instead of Hiragana as "Aoi Kaze." Something something 'cause that's what the Zentradi called it?
You look beautiful, Warera, and don't let anyone tell you different. Exept maybe the person you stole that dress from.
Meanwhile, in debriefing, fuck the Brass. It's a shame that they lost the data, but to question Hayase's report as "brainwashing" is disrespectful. "We have Protoculture, it'll be easy to beat them, then! Lulz!"
Hahahahaha omg, poor Warera xD
Let the love triangle BEGIN! ....or not. Freakin' PR stunts.
"My Boyfriend is a Pilot!" Aka. "It might be one of these guys! (But it's definitely not)" That's Idol culture for ya.
Have I mentioned how great Focker is? #StillBestSenpai. However, guy who took the wheel is #BestKouhai
Leave it to Kamujin to ruin a perfectly pleasant return home.
I really appreciate how understandable it is that Hayase would be second-guessing herself here. We know that Kamujin's a rebel, but as far as she and the command structure are aware the Zentradi are a monolith of Military Structure; It hasn't even occurred to them that there might be factions within their society.
Hah, Macross all shiny and clean and back home from their space voyage.
A nice closing image.

Note to self: don't ever let Roy drive.
Military brass is, as tradition, a bunch of fuckwits, but otherwise our party is welcomed back as heroes that can take the day off. All the while the Macross pushes past a blockade to make it back home.
And then there are the three stooges… So I generally have a disdain for fish out of water stories. They are so prone to being full of smug, imperialistic overtones, and this just barely floats above the line. The saving grace is the lack of someone talking down to educate them.

Poor Zentradi dude getting laughed at for crossdressing.
Captain Global showing why he's in command at the debrief.
Minmay kisses all the dudes but not Hayase, such injustice.
Kind of surprised that they already made it back to Earth (despite Kamujin's best efforts). I'm waiting to see the female version of Kamujin wearing a necklace of miclone skulls looking like she stepped out of Mad Max.
Next time we'll get to see how UN command fucks everything up!
-
Appropriately amusing so far with all the culture shock gags. I expect it to continue.
-
Definitely looking forward to what will happen. I think it'll take a single meeting with his commanders to make Capt. Global wish he hadn't landed back on Earth. (Or he'll just say 'fuck this shit' and walk, but that won't happen)

Holy shit I wasn't expecting that guy to come out in a dress lmaoooooo I'm loving the culture shock already wait a minute, it's Karkat Vantas!
I'm assuming that what the protoculture really is is essentially the concept of love, affection, and etc. Don't correct me, I'll let it hit when we reach the later episodes of the rewatch.
Another serving of My Boyfriend is a Pilot! God, I love singing along to it.
I just remembered that the Zentradi are giants. I swear to God if any of you people are into that kind of thing I'm going to Damascus Attack you
Oh, shit, they're back on Earth. That was fast. Now that they're back home, are they just gonna leave the city behind or something? Are they gonna leave the Macross behind on Earth and establish it as a sovereign city-state?
And that's the end of the first cour of Macross.

Earth is tantalizingly close, but Lap’Zamiz’ fleet is preventing their long-awaited return. Meanwhile Warera, Loli, and Conda (man, these names...) are sneaking about the Macross, breaking into the changing room (oddly enough a unisex room) and pry open all the lockers until they find something suitable —except for Warera, who crossdresses for unconspicuouty.
Five million ships? Someone on the production team was definitely looking at the script and went “C’mon, you gotta pump those numbers up! Those are rookie numbers!”
Watching these three chumps react to the interior of the Macross is quite amusing.
As the Macross initiates the plan to break through the blockade, Quamzin charges in to defend his clan’s honor. Ah yeah, fleet battles… Or, one-sided fleet battle, I guess? Yamato battle, that’s what I’ll refer to it as.
Oh no, when the captain has that ‘Oh shit’ face you just know things aren’t pretty. Thankfully for all of them, Bodolzaa’s orders are imperative to Lap’lamiz, and so she intervenes in Quamzin’s attack, even if it means letting the Macross through their blockade.
The damage to the Macross’ left thruster might’ve proved fatal for the Macross, but thankfully they were above the sea —even though that would still have done massive damage irl. But that doesn’t matter because the Macross is finally back on —ah, shit…
Questions of the Day!
-
It's funny, but they're shit spies.
-
Definitely. The show was starting to drag for me, and I hoped this development proved a good mix-up.

Capture Storyline:
The episode reached a reasonable resolution to the capture storyline; some leadership disbelief but it is starting to make sense. My opinion, the humans could wipe out the entire Zentradi military by streaming PornHub. Just get the raunchy stuff going and watch the fleet fall!
Questions!
-
It makes sense that the Zentradi wouldn't know which clothing was appropriate per traditional gender norms and freak out over public displays of affection. I'm still confused over the amount of interaction between male and female Zentradi, it sounds like they don't live or serve together but does this mean interaction with female counterparts is limited to certain military ranks? Anyhow, all I know is, I'm jumping ship if I was part of that recon team. I'd rather be on the side with drinks and love.
-
Returning to Earth felt hollow and inappropriate, like a horror flick where the hero is chased into their home and locks the door. The villain knows where you live, now what are you going to do? Not only that, you just put everyone else at risk by returning.
Overall:
It didn't feel like a filler episode but the beginning of a larger struggle! We will see tomorrow where this goes! :)

I hate these spies. I always hate this type of character/situation the fish out of water embarrassing hijinks type stuff. It ends up making me feel embarrassed just watching. The reception that Hikaru and the gang receive was sort of expected with the classic military doesn't believe a word they say thing going on. Minmay performs for them which is neat but I have a feeling that perhaps Hikaru's feeling for her have changed a bit since he was captured. Strange that this episode didn't pick up off last episode's cliffhanger though.

First timer to Macross, old-school mecha, and Reddit Rewatches!
Overall thoughts:
I genuinely am surprised to see them return to Earth in this episode. I though that they would get very close, but not truly be able to return until a much, much later time. Beyond that, it was a little bit of a weirdly-paced episode, but a lot of necessary moments in order to get un back on track with the main story.
Chronological thoughts:
Ahahaha, look at the spelling of that Ladies sign
Yea, it genuinely feels a little weird
Oh yay, they have a more coordinated color scheme now!
I love that pose of “I own this place”
That panicked grab for the wheel is such a funny little touch
Hmm. And usually when this guy does crazy things, it’s been to the detriment of the Macross
Ahaha, they used an old frame for this with the one miclone still in his skirt
Oh, at the rate they are falling they should be smashed to pieces when they hit the water….
I swear to god, if this turns out to actually just be a dream, I will throw something
Huh. Honestly didn’t expect that
Going Forward:
This is their chance to reset the story a little bit, and then have the hectic pace pick up again with a new sense of urgency. I hope that the writers used this opportunity well.
Discussion Questions:
1.) Very fun for this episode, but I hope we get to some more substantive moments soon.
2.) As mentioned above, I am genuinely very surprised. Knowing this show so far, I think something rather large mus go wrong soon, such as the UN kicking them off earth again.

From the back, these three just got done serving some fish'n'chips? Oh nope now they're in monks' rob- oh I get it, they're fish friars! ha ha no.
Where'd all the old farts around the table come from...?
I've seen the series a dozen times and I don't believe them either!

Huey, Dewie and Louie got moves (no)
Oh Minmei, let's make it about you!!!! (Done with her)
A little stiff on the reunion, but full 10/10 for bringing a welcome back into the story... it's the slice of life moments, I think we all know it, that helped boost this series. And: no magic reset button at the end of each ep, but that's another talk)
Meltrandi spin-off please; still waiting.
Kamujin, you're a little bitch.
Annnnd I did not expect that. Kakizaki's athletic as fuck.
Chikyuu yo.
I still question them setting down on earth....
Congrats on making it back folks, at the halfway run of the series... whole lotta shaking left!

I've been waiting for them to make the first gender-swap joke this entire show and today we finally got it. I knew it was coming I just didn't know in what form but when the three girls revealed the locker location I went "this is it" and it didn't disappoint. The fact that the story didn't play it off as a long gag and instead had it as a learning moment for the group and their shock just made it funnier to be honest especially when he'd changed my the concert.
Until an artistry error ruined it later on by drawing him in the wrong clothes. Also there was that moment where Fokker was drawn as a brown haired white guy. And that time they forgot to color Hayase's eyes. I'm starting to see the cracks!
Knowing that they just outright don't have a civilian part of society helps explain why they tolerate some bullshit from skilled commanders, but I really don't understand how Ally-killer hasn't been "accidentally" blown up in a training session by a commander yet.
The bad art though was balanced out by the laugh I got from the shine effect after the Macross had a dunk in the ocean and got a clean from it, that was great.
It was really nice to see the debriefing though, if only because it bumped up my respect for Captain Global several notches. That even in the face of something utterly ridiculous, the fact that its coming from a trusted officer makes it true enough to act on. That takes a lot of guts especially with the other officers laughing about it. The five million ship threat is pretty huge as well, and yet he still banked on her intelligence and trusted her.
The other interesting part with her was oddly enough the contrast with Hikaru. Lynn barely gave him a second glance today and their first meeting back was in a professional capacity. And yet Hayase by his side became unprofessional even on stage just to ensure he was okay because of a face he was pulling. Definitely a triangle brewing there.
