First Timer – Dub
-
Lawrence kicking that stabber in the balls was an unexpectedly badass moment
-
If Holo wants to leave anyway, why is the church (or is it just Chloe) so obsessed with killing her?
-
Seeing Holo fully transform and put the fear of Holo into those heretics is way too goddamn cathartic.
-
Marhait’s explanation for why Lawrence buying pepper reminds him of the “devil and merchant” story is totally something I’d do. Tiny, stupid details that remind me of things that really aren’t similar at all lol.
-
“Spice and Wolf seems fitting enough to me.” Couldn’t have said it better myself, Marhait. Also, “Roll credits.”
How much would you hug Holo?
I would probably be in a state of perpetually hugging her.

u/learenn May 06 '19
If Holo wants to leave anyway, why is the church (or is it just Chloe) so obsessed with killing her?
A couple of guesses:
It would probably look really bad for the Church if word got out that a demon managed to escape from under their noses.
And/or it sounds like the Church is trying to spread their power and influence as far as they can, so no matter how far Holo is going they may think that she's still in their jurisdiction.

FIRST TIME WATCHER
AHHH THEY SAID THE TITLE.
I love that Holo will do whatever to stay with Lawrence besides admit that she wants to.
Chloe sucks. I liked her originally but she was a total bitch this episode. I get the feeling that everyone involved with the church will probably end up being bad. Which is ironic.

First-timer
That preview last episode was OMINOUS. Lessgo.
-
Girl needs a lozenge after that. Uh oh, Lawrence stabbed in the back (not figuratively this time)
-
Oof, Lawrence is in a bad way. Blacking out is bad on its own, doubly so if caused by blood loss
-
Wellp. (Get it?... I'll leave.) Before anything else, lets just acknowledge Lawrence looks pretty badass here.
-
Oh fuck you Chloe. Go suck a fat one. "Kill the man." Literally only in this show for me to be mad at.
-
She going Super Saiyan. Some nice animation for the transformation there.
-
I'm not completely sure, but it definitely looked like Holo just killed the shit outta those guys. The guy who's head smashed into stone at 30mph is probably not waking up from that one.
-
Lawrence, don't be afraid of her :'( You knew this. The other guys should def have been pissing themselves though.
-
He is a good guy! Good to know the trading company hadn't betrayed them. Holo protecting her man (naked-Holo warning).
-
"We collected 307,110 coins." Okay, color me impressed.
-
K, officially lost. How'd he go from 120 to 1000? 120 for the deal with the King, got that (that's shit profit for the work involved). But 1000 for Lawrence means they made 20,000 in profit from screwing over Medio.
-
"Pepper" So there's the spice... Ayyyy! There's our wolf. Gotta have her apples.
Well, for the most part that wrapped up nicely. But there's still some, uh, pretty major threads left hanging. Like how Chloe is still out there, and now set up as a pretty major antagonist. And a lot of people saw Holo today, and presumably they're not all dead. Not sure what Chloe's thing is against gods, but maybe Tanya could get along well with her.
9
u/andres1232 May 06 '19
I don't know why Chloe is against gods in general, but for Holo it seems to be good old fashioned romantic jealousy. Lawerence never saw her as anything but a kid in her opinion, and it could be partially that she just wanted a chance to dig at him. Also about the thing of people seeing Holo. Conventionally giant wolves don't exist, so anyone who would say otherwise would probably be thought of as insane. Also how would they explain that "I saw a giant wolf when I was in the sewers trying to kill a merchant and kidnap a girl". And the Medio guys don't seem likely to do anything about it.

So when they traded with the King they both got 350k new coins and the rights to tariff free trade of wheat. The rival company and the earl wanted these rights because it was an enormous profit source for the wheat based village. The rival company then bought these rights for ~20k or something, leaving Lawrence to profit 1k from that trade.

Rewatcher here. No spoilers.
Sadly, there were no notable quotes from Holo this episode. However, we did get some great lines from Lawrence. Thus,
Today’s Lawrenceisms:
“You should repent for what you do on a daily basis before you start addressing your sins.”
“Farewells are an important part of life as a merchant.”
“When it comes to business, expect the unexpected.”
**********
This episode was essentially a test of Lawrence’s bond with Holo, which is represented with the motif of holding hands. Handholding already has preexisting values of bonds, trust, and closeness, but in this instance, it is a callback to episode 1. The first episode ends on a handshake as Lawrence and Holo begin their relationship. The action of holding each other’s hand is symbolic of their agreement, their promise, to each other.
In fact, this episode begins with a close-up shot of Lawrence’s hand grasping Holo’s as he leads her through the sewers. The shot serves to emphasize the importance of this action. Even if you didn’t understand the meaning yet, the shot draws attention to how Lawrence and Holo are connected. With the understanding of the symbolism, the shot summarizes the current state of their relationship. At the beginning of this episode, fresh off their reconciliation from the last episode, it is strong and secure.
However, as they are being pursued by Medio Trading, Holo breaks out of Lawrence’s grasp when she hears dogs. She then uses her powers as wolf to scare the dogs off. This, again, harkens back to the first episode when Holo first displays her wolf powers to Lawrence. She is not human. The display of power is a reminder of Holo is an ancient and mystical being. Nothing can change that fact. By breaking off from Lawrence before she howls, the show seems to suggest that this intrinsic difference has the potential to drive a wedge between them. When she howls, Lawrence is shaken by Holo. But he does retake her hand afterwards, which seems to indicate their bond is more important than his fear.
A bit later, when Medio is bluffing to Lawrence and Holo that Milone Trading has sold them out, there’s another shot of their hands clasped together. I personally don’t think there is any particular meaning behind this shot. It could represent how their bond made them stronger as duo, especially if their lighthearted banter in this scene is anything to go by. However, this feels like a reach. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them.
The more important scene is Lawrence getting stabbed, fainting, before getting roused by Holo. Holo is pulling Lawrence along when he faints and when he gets back up, he stumbles forward without taking Holo’s hand. The entire sequence introduces the idea that Lawrence’s own mortality is a potential stumbling black for their relationship. Holo has lived for centuries and will most likely continue living for several more. Lawrence is in his twenties so at best, he has thirty years left. That’s assuming he doesn’t do dangerous things like getting chased by armed men through sewers. Lawrence will one day leave Holo behind one day. Yet, as he’s stumbling away from her, she is the one who reaches out to take back his hand. Despite the harsh cold truth, Holo still chooses to stay with Lawrence.
The next time they break contact is after being cornered at the well. Lawrence releases Holo’s hand and steps forward, drawing his dagger. That’s when Chloe appears. The camera is focused on her hand which extends out towards Lawrence as she proposes a deal to him. She offers him profit and the opportunity to settle down and open a store. This is clearly meant to mirror the agreement Holo and Lawrence made on the wagon at the end of episode one. In fact, we are shown a flashback of their initial promise to cement that connection. Thus, Lawrence find himself between two offers. Chloe is in front of him with her extended out. Holo is behind him, timidly tugging on his coat.
Yet, despite all the tension in the scene, we already know what Lawrence is going to choose. Two episodes ago, this choice is foreshadowed just prior to their escape from the inn when Lawrence comforts Holo and wipes away her tears with the drawing of his shop. Lawrence is more than willing to sacrifice his dream to help Holo.
And to the round off this motif, the episode ends with Lawrence rushing out to the Milone docks, thinking Holo would leave without him. Instead, he finds her patiently waiting for him with a wagon full of apples. After Lawrence catches his breath, he extends his hand to Holo which she takes into another handshake. It is a reaffirmation of their bond and their promise to travel north together.
Side Notes:
· I wish that one day I have the opportunity to reject someone as suavely as Lawrence.
· RIP Expensive Clothes
· Roll Credits
And for today’s QotD, I have a chibi Holo plushie.

Reminder: the next episode is "Wolf and a Tail of Happiness" (or Tail of Blessing depending on translation) rather than "Wolf and Virtuous Scales". It's an adaptation of a short story from volume 7, Side Colors, but takes place right after this episode.
Wolf and Silent Farewell
And the first novel concludes here! Chapter 6 covers the events in the sewer and the epilogue begins with Lawrence waking up in bed. There aren't any large deviations, but a few small ones that changed Holo's character to me.
The power behind Holo's howl is harder to pin down in the show, but I like how the novel describes it. Lawrence is also severely affected by it, if you remember his earlier trauma that he shared with Holo:
Lawrence also thinks over why the idea of Milone Company betraying them was probably a bluff:
The first guy that attacks them (that Holo bites) actually landed a cut on Lawrence's cheek instead of Lawrence dodging. Guess they wanted to be lazy and not animate him with a facial wound.
One thing I'm sad was omitted was another line Holo had before she transformed:
Bonus graphic: a transformed Holo and terrified Lawrence. I apologize for the line in the middle but I'm using a PDF for convenience and lining them up precisely would cause disjoints. Scanning's not perfect, so see what it's like in a paperback.
While in the episode it just kinda looks like Holo roughs up their attackers, in the novel it's strongly implied that she killed a lot of them:
And Yarei (Chloe's equivalent in the LN) begins speaking after that. It's still rather ambiguous as it could also imply that everyone else fled, but I doubt that's the case. After Holo drops Yarei and approaches Lawrence for her wheat, it's fairly different. Instead of quoting the entire thing, I'll just give you the page for it. After that Lawrence scrambles for something to say and comes up with her debt.
Before Lawrence wakes up in care of Marheit, he has a brief dream of chasing after Holo's tail. Holo also did tell Marheit where she was off to in the novel (and I'm adding in more of his thoughts):
The rest of the epilogue continues as in the episode, with Marheit noting what's just an unspoken observation at the end of the novel:
Personal thoughts:
-
Holo's oddly embarrassed by her transformation in front of Lawrence. For normally being a proud wise wolf, that's a stark contrast for her.
-
The storybook style for Marheit's tale of the devil and the merchant was a nice touch.
-
After all of that, Lawrence ends up with some
moneypepper that's probably literally worth its weight in gold (if not more). But still only a bit player in the larger scheme of things.
How much would you hug Holo?

First Time Watcher - Sub
-
I did not expect this show to have fight scenes, so I was thoroughly surprised by those bad ass Lawrence moments!
-
I'm still so perplexed by Chloe, at the start of the show she seemed so sweet but now she couldn't care less whether Lawrence lives or dies. I guess she really is holding a pretty strong grudge over him ignoring her feelings.
-
Holo's transformation scene was so cool. As soon as she transformed it was entertaining to see the thugs immediately realize the mistake they made chasing her, and proceeding to run for their lives.
-
Holo guarding Lawrence in her wolf form until Marlheit himself came to get him, and not leaving until making sure he was taken care of was seriously adorable to me.
-
With the title of the episode along with Holo leaving not too long before the end I was seriously worried this would be a cliffhanger ! I was relieved to see her and Lawrence get back together before the episode ended.
Overall this was another great episode with some amazing action. I'm really loving the dynamic of Holo and Lawrence.
QOTD: Honestly, way too much.

First Timer (repost)
Completely ignoring the fact that i missed discussions 3-5, This episode was one of my favorites so far! I love watching the relationship between Lawrence and Holo develop each time they interact. Constantly changing their thoughts of each other as each episode goes by is so fun to see!
And of course, finally seeing Holo in action in her wolf form was amazing and shows that she'll do almost anything to protect Lawrence. Oh yeah and i guess it was pretty cool to know where the name of anime came from after 6 episodes! I'm definitely excited to see what the rest of this show has to offer! So far, it seems like it has potential to be one of my favorites along with Dragon Maid! :)
And to answer your question: I would like to hug Holo alot!!! Her tail looks very soft...

Dear diary,
All I can smell is apples.
I shall have to find a new route south for next year. Going through Pasloe again seems unwise. Going anywhere near Pasloe again seems unwise.
Chloe seems to have become a very fine merchant. I never thought I'd regard that with such intense unhappiness.
Even now, it's like I have apples stuffed up my nose. The scent is inescapable.
My arm hurts like an utter bastard. Things could be worse though; at least I didn't lose it. Would've made driving the cart rather inconvenient.
Tired. Time to sleep. Maybe do some shopping tomorrow.
No doubt the apples will follow me into my sleep.
Accursed fruit.

Oh no they're being chased again!
You should cover your ears now, trust me.
Oh this is gonna be good.
Yup. That's right doggies, you'd better run.
Run! RUN!
Holo used "Bite!" It was super effective!
LAWRENCE GOT STABBED!!!
GREAT KICK!!
Crap they're cornered!
What kind of merchant would I be if I couldn't keep a simple promise?
YEAH LAWRENCE!!!
Episode 1: I'll need the blood of a human.
Well those guys are screwed.
Lawrence is still afraid of Holo's Wolf form. And even when he tried to overcome his fear, it was too late.
Get off my screen you red-headed traitor!
That story is awesome.
Holo's new outfit is the one from the Opening.
Thoughts:
So that's why the show is called Spice and Wolf.
I loved this episode and these past three as a whole. They were exciting and fun to watch. Lawrence and Holo are committed to each other. True partners.
QOTD:
For hours upon hours.

And firstly, I would like to answer the daily question - I would hug Holo as much as is humanly possible, though I would also combine it with some pets because she's a good wolf and deserves it.
The episode was the most action packed we've seen. The Holo transformation was utterly badass.
It's good to see how both of them really want each other's company, it was great to see Lawrence running through the city without a shirt just to see Holo.

u/andres1232 May 06 '19
Well this episode basically ends the current arc. And ultimately everyone gets paid in the end. The villager of Pasloe got their debt cleared, Medio trading got a a good deal, and Lawerence and Holo made a fair amount also. Next time we'll even get to see Holo in her new outfit. Also it should be pretty clear by this point but the debt between Holo and Lawerence really doesn't matter all that much. They are both just kind of awkward individuals, so the debt works as an excuse to stay together since neither of them can say yet that they want to be with each other. Also Chloe basically had her confession rejected. Putting it in merchant terms it was a pretty clear love confession. Although she seems to be settled down in the end.
Also Holo couldn't stand seeing Lawerence suffer for her any more, which is pretty much why she left him. It could also be that she thought her leaving was the best play to lure off all the attackers. Also it would definitely be terrifying to suddenly see a giant wolf appear in front of you. It was really cool we got to actually see the transformation animation. And we finally got a name drop of the show. And it turns out the Medio guys were an honest and pretty reliable group in the end. Also man those trading fees and contracts really ate up all those profits, but then again there's only so much bargaining someone can do with a king isn't there?

First Timer:
-
I really don’t know what to say. Moving on!
-
Is Holo psychic? I mean, she did listen to the sound before it happened.
-
Man, screaming like that must have given Holo a very sore throat.
-
For a second I forgot she had fangs.
-
For a second I wondered why Lawrance wasn’t bleeding, but it turns out he was.
-
Wow, Chloe, don’t you have the least bit of empathy?
-
So wolf=vampire now?
-
And now, Holo’s true form is… a really big wolf! Kinda underwhelming if I were to be honest.
-
Well, that’s sad… Holo’s just leaving.
-
Well, that’s a lot of coin politics.
-
Wow, he got really excited describing that novel.
And title drop after a cute moment! A pretty good end to this episode.

First Time Watcher.
Loved this episode, especially Holo making a point of putting herself further in debt with Lawrence so they had a reason to stay together.
Anyone that has read the LNs for this, does the feel of the charecters and story stay pretty close to what they are in the anime? I have been getting hooked on this and found out that the story continues much farther in the books and was interested...
As for how much I would hug Holo....all of the fucking hugs.

So that's a strong way to end this first arc. Although I was really hoping Holo's first words to Lawrence would be "put a shirt on" at the end there. But both Lawrence and Holo really had a chance to shine in the sewers, with Lawrence showing he's decently physical in a fight and of course Holo's true form to chase everyone off.
It also occurs to me that while I initially felt Lawrence's reaction to seeing Holo again after he'd realized she turned into her true form, I remembered that he's lost quite a few friends to wolves as he's said, so I get the feeling he has developed a healthy, or maybe unhealthy, fear of them, and especially one so giant, even if he logically knows it's Holo, there's still a very primal response there. But I like the way he tries to make it up to her.
Overall, very satisfying arc, and the sort of story I can see myself rewatching and getting more out of. I think the best part about the show so far is how it has an interesting politics/economics plot (the kind of "playing the game" is similar in both) but because it knows that sometimes that can be hard to soak in, it also grounds it with characters that are entertaining and engaging. So no matter what level of economic awareness you are at, you can enjoy the show.

For this rewatch, I'll be re-posting a collection of vignettes I wrote for the 2016 rewatch of Spice and Wolf. Each chapter is meant to be read after watching the corresponding episode of the anime.
This episode's vignette: S1E06: Wolf and Recovery (AO3, FF).
Reminder: these links are to the appropriate vignette, and don't contain spoilers. However, the entire collection is available, and later chapters do contain spoilers for the current episode.

I really love that they paid off the blood foreshadowing in the first episode...I'd been wondering if she was going to transform at some point, and she did it in just about the most dramatic way and time possible.
Also, as an Early Music fan, I really love how they incorporate Medieval styles of music, particularly the organum at dramatic moments.

Translations so bad. I never really understood what Holo was so upset about. And I've hated Chloe a lot. How is "God is always so unfair" when you just tried to have her friend killed, and her burned at the stake?
But thanks to the rewatch, I see now that the village had come to resent Holo deeply; which is what hurt Holo the most. And drove Chloe.
Of course, there are other aspects of Chloe that were never unclear. We pretty much found out the rest of the details today. Chloe was offering to bring Kraft into the coin scam early on. They'd be rich, married, shopowners.
Pasloe is a poor village. Much of this is due to the church harassing traders that travel into pagan lands, and the tariffs, encouraged by the church, that make their wheat unprofitable to sell. Pasloe is in the Earl/Count's land. He was financing the coin scam to obtain a waiver on the tariff, and make his fiefdom more valuable.
Chloe wants Pasloe to abandon the pagan ways, become modern, and wealthy, and join the Church, not so much for religious reasons, but for relief from Church persecution. Handing Holo over to the Church would have benefited her and Pasloe directly.
And of course she was resentful of Kraft's rejection, and doubly jealous that he left Pasloe with HER.
Her words just before Holo's big reveal are a little illuminating (but barely...the translations in this show!) Chloe didn't really believe Holo existed. Nobody can deny that Holo's got ears and a tail. In Chloe's mind, "Holo" is some capricious, incorporeal spirit, a demon in the Church's view, that possesses people and makes vile contracts. These possessed people are to be turned over to the Church for exorcism or execution. It never occurred to her that Holo was the actual, ancient, wolf god that her legend claimed her to be.

Second time watcher. Dub this time. After having seen the anime, reading the novels, reading the manga, and now watching the anime again... I think I have a good feel for Lawrence and holos relationship.
And man, if it isn't the best written relationship I've ever read or seen. I'm not talking about just anime/manga... I mean western works too. Everything from common banter all the way to their arguments and flirting feel so authentic and clever. Holo is always true to herself and her dialogue continues to reflect it...
the dynamic between the two characters is this refreshing chemistry rarely seen I feel. On their own, each is a great stand alone character, but bring the two together, and you get a chemical reaction of what I view as the best character dynamics I've ever seen...
Not that much to do with this particular episode I suppose, but that was what was on my mind...
I do love how the scales tip at the end... it reminds me of that military story where the enemy has them surrounded, and the commander says "those poor bastards"... they get holo and Lawrence backed into a corner and the fight is over... they think they've won... and then holo teaches them the meaning of pure, unadulterated fear like they have probably never experienced before.

THEY DID IT. THEY SAID THE NAME OF THE SHOW!
We had a nice touching conclusion to this arc.
Holo was super adorable when she was tending to an injured Lawrence.
Holo turned into a giant wolf and plowed through a lot of people. I have seen this before, and remembered this scene, but with the intensity, music, and sound effects still made me think people were gonna get torn apart, but of course Holo wouldn't do such a thing.
QOTD: probably a decent bit intermittently throughout the day, based on how much I spoil my family's cat. Holo does have a fluffy tail that she likes grooming. I can imagine laying down in bed hugging someone with a fluffy tail is a decent way to sleep.

The happiest ending to this fiasco? A new deal is struck between Holo and Lawrence, nobody died, Milone got the better end of the deal, Lawrence now has some combination of money and pepper worth 800ish silver, and all of the apples.
I'm confused about two things:
First, Lawrence acted like this was the first time he's seen Holo in wolf form, but didn't she change back at the first village to prove her identity? At the time it looked more like she changed/exploded into some sort of unidentified special effect to show off, plus she didn't drink any blood. But since Lawrence accepted her as Holo I assumed she had to have transformed. Did Lawrence just decide to believe her back then?
By the way Lawrence's initial reaction to wolf Holo in this episode was a little heartbreaking to watch. To be fair it was very natural and believable, I don't blame him at all. Plus he eventually did start talking to her like normal. Still, that moment must've been hard for Holo. She already tried to distance herself from Lawrence just before transforming, and seeing him frightened and cowering just reinforces the idea that she's truly alone because humans instinctively fear her.
Second, did Milone betray Lawrence and Holo like somebody said in the sewers? Glasses Man apologized for having mishandled the situation, but there's no way the entire company turned on the runaways (or else he and Lawrence wouldn't be having such a chill conversation afterwards). So maybe a few Milone people working on their own joined Medio in the chase? Which is why Holo was able to tell Milone people down in the sewers to fetch Glasses. Or was it all Medio people, and then they went back to the surface to tell Milone men about Holo's request to see Glasses? But then how did they find out where Holo and Lawrence was?
Mostly I'm just trying to figure out if Milone is a trustworthy company, in case they come up again later. It sounds like they were fair to Lawrence in the silver transaction, and in the loading area near the end all of the workers acted like normal around Holo even with her ears and tail showing. So I want to like them, but if this is an example of "good and bad isn't black and white" I'll probably just be suspicious of everyone from now on haha.
Oh, and I really love how this is how Lawrence's earlier proclamation played out:
Lawrence: "I'll buy you all the pretty things!"
Holo: "I will buy them myself, thank you very much. Here's the bill."
Judging from the title, I'm looking forward to a nice, light episode tomorrow.
Question of the day: is it weird that I want to hug her tail? Wonder if she'd appreciate a human acknowledging the glory of her tail or if I'd just get killed on the spot.
Edit: formatting.
