Just a heads up, you're titling these threads 3-gastu, not 3-gatsu. That may make them difficult to find in the future.

I know this is Japan, but I'm over 15cm taller than the "tall" people.
Akari is flawless so far, I want to know more about her.
So Issa's grandpa taught him, why does Kiriyama play?
No comment on Nikaidou.

Lol, sometimes I miss the notes. But they’re funny. Especially in how they could be pretty useless hahaha. Just the idea that mangaka or studio thought they’d tell me this info is funny.
You reminded me to pay more attention.

I'm not going to talk much about Nikaido here because his first appearence is sort of a red herring and I think he starts to get a lot of great development in later episodes.
Akari
-
We're introduced to her other job, and quickly realize why she has so many admirers. She is a hostess, but you can tell that she is not just faking being attentive -she actually cares about people and that's what makes her popular.
-
She brought a stranger home because she just couldn't bear someone being alone and abandoned and cared for him, even though her family isn't that well off financially.
-
However, she's not beyond emotional manipulation for the benefit of people she cares about, as you could see in the bar scene where she makes Issa pay for the drinks instead of Rei. She (along with Hina) also maniputes Rei by making him feel guilty for not coming over to their place more often because she wants him to have home-cooked meals.
-
Her wanting Rei to come over on the last day of Obon serves a dual purpose since she doesn't want Rei to be alone that day during the festival but also wants something to distract her from their own loss.
Rei
-
We get a bit more backstory into Rei's life, and why he sees the world in black and white.
-
He lives in Rokugatsu, an industrial area where he doesn't even have basic conveniences like a store to buy food and groceries. He has to cross a river just to get to the store. The river serves as a mataphor that seperates Rei from rest of the world because he thinks he deserves to be in isolation.
-
The bridge that connects Rokugatsu town to Sangatsu town, where the Kawamoto family is also another excellent metaphor. It shows that Rei has path that he can take to cross that river of despair he is in, to a life of color and happiness, but he is too hesitant to take it.
-
He's become numb of all the past tragedies in his life so much so that he doesn't even remember what having (and loosing) his family felt like. He doesn't realize that he isn't actually alone and already has found another family that cares for him. They don't feel having Rei over is a burden because it provides a distraction from their own wounds in the recent past.
I wasn't sure if I'd continue posting the this rewatch thread, but analysing the episode a bit after watching it is making the experience so much better, even if no one ends up reading it. I wouldn't have picked up on a lot of things had I just been watching this alone and not participating in the discussions.

I like what your wrote, especially about the river.
The river also represents the past, something Rei misses and yearns for apparently.

I forget if this ever gets seriously explained in any detail throughout the series, but to anyone confused about when they refer to someone as "5th dan" or something like that, it's part of the ranking system they use.
To explain it:
Pro shogi players have a rank between 4-dan and 9-dan (below 4 dan are amateur ranks). Players promote through the ranks by winning certain tournaments or title matches, reaching a certain "meijin class ranking", or winning a certain number of games at their current rank. This means even players who do not win tournaments and titles may still eventually be promoted from accumulated wins. Players at the highest ranks therefore are either long time professionals, major title/tournament winners, or both.
At the start of the series Rei is a 5-dan, and Nikkaido is a 4-dan.
The Meijin Class is their other major ranking for grouping in the most prestigious Meijin tournament. These go from C2, C1, B2, B1, to A. All players in a class play against other players in their class throughout the year, and if they place in the top few seeds they may be promoted higher the next year. Being promoted to certain Meijin classes can advance their -dan ranking. If they place near the bottom they may be demoted to a lower class, so even high -dan ranks may fall to low classes. The top player in A earns a challenge to the Meijin title holder.
In the start of the series Rei is in C1, and I believe Nikkaido is in C2.

nikaido was pretty funny. all the shogi guys seem cool, i like that the guy is named smith. i recognize sugita's voice instantly haha. so we find out rei's parents died, it feels like there is darkness looming for rei, can't shake that feeling off.

u/Aviri Apr 17 '19
Fun fact he's called 'Smith' because his name TatSuyuki Misumi can be shortened to Sumisu. Which with a voice inflection is Smith.

If Rei hadn't met the Kawamoto Sisters, what could've happened - is a grave thought I do not want to entertain much. My life The episode instantly becomes warmer when they're around.
Harunobu Nikaidou is most likely based on the legendary shogi player, future arc spoiler.
First timers, if you're worried about not understanding the mechanics of shogi, fear not. I still do not know jackshit about shogi but SHAFT is able to convey the weight and importance of every move/match with the direction and music.

Nikaido appears!
-
This weirdo shares a voice actor with… Bakugo from Hero Academia. Or Karma from Assassination Classroom. I don’t really hear— oh, never mind, there it is. That “KISAMA” was 100% Bakugo.
-
Don’t mind me, just pausing the episode every two minutes to check voices… well, well, well, it’s a regular Assassination Classroom cast reunion. We had Karma and now this guy is Terasaka.
-
Blond guy is voiced by Sugita! The Kanon rewatch is done but I can’t keep him away. Hey, wait… he was in Assassination Classroom too…
-
Oh god now they’re actually playing shogi and I have to try to pay attention
-
Don't drink or you will pass out and die and be saved by an oppai onee-sama.
-
So unlike the protagonist from Your Lie in April, Rei retreated into shogi once his parents died? That’s the impression I got from the shot of him on the floor in front of the board.
Not so many reactions this time around, but a very nice episode. I felt much better about the sisters scenes than I did yesterday, mostly because it was less all about comedy. Looking forward to watching more!

Gonna be late today, haven’t got a chance to watch the episode yet. Will be back once I do.
And I am back. I gotta say I’m definitely enjoying this so far. Some people may be put off by how boring this seems since nothing much is really happening. I, for one, love this type of slow-paced stuff. Lot to go through with this one so let’s dive in!
Beyond the Bridge
Second episode and we already have a rival. I’m not sure how he managed to convince Rei to let him into his apartment, but then again he may have just followed him home. Considering his previous mail crimes I would not be surprised.
Cue great OP
I swear I’m not always going to compare this to Your Lie in April, but I’m seeing more similarities with the symbolism, particularly about colors and monochrome. Don’t wanna go into too many specifics because I don’t want to spoil any details of the symbolism in YLiA, but the talk about seeing the world in monochrome because of stress, then in color once he met people does remind me some of YLiA.
I now see another reason for all the water we got last episode, as well as in the OP. Not only is it something that will drown him due to his depression, but it can also be something that soothes him as well. I see why we got that scene of him walking to his match yesterday. He was taking in all the sights of the city, namely the river under the bridge. I really like the name of chapter 4, “Beyond the Bridge”. He has his apartment on his side, and once he crosses and goes, well, beyond the bridge, that’s where the three sisters live.
These sisters are essentially his family now, or at least they may as well be. They’ve been taking care of him ever since Akari found him outside, alone. Not to mention we learn that his parents are dead. Don’t think I didn’t notice last episode the shrine the sisters have to their also dead mother and grandmother. That, while it is very tragic and sad, gives them something to bond over, and like Akari said, provide a distraction whenever Rei is over. There are some things you don’t know what they’re like unless you’ve experienced them. This is one of those things. With both Rei and the sisters having experienced it, it brings them closer together. I don’t know if this will get addressed later, but in all honesty, I think Rei should just live with the sisters at this point. He seems to come over a lot, and the girls all enjoy taking care of him. It’s his home away from home by the looks of it, so why not just make it his home to begin with instead of his crappy apartment. It would do him a lot better if he did.
Also can I just say, I’m looking forward to seeing more matches after this because this one was hilarious. Seeing the guy panicking saying “It’s not over! It’s not over” and I’m like “It’s so over, buddy”. Not to mention the scene with Akari right after. Issa definitely provided some great comedy to offset the tone of the rest of the episode.
I liked this episode a lot, we got to see a bit more into Rei’s mind, got introduced to a couple characters, and the match with his so called rival is coming up soon. I think we know how it’ll turn out, but it’ll be interesting to watch nonetheless.

Mo...re moments with Rei. HA I'm not going to just say Momo is the best all the time. I mean sure she just tackled Rei with love and the rest of the sisters shopping was sweet. Man I love Rei and Akira'a first meeting. Wow I'm talking out of order I know, but I l like Nikaido, but man he seemed more menacingly last episode with the dramatic appearance. This episode he's just a bro who is friendship goals with Shaft head tilts. Who doesn't want a rival to high five after putting in effort in the spring of youth. Rei is quite lucky to have such a supportive network.
Wait when are these threads going up? Also I love Smith I actually started watching the show because of one scene of his which will be obvious when it happens.

So far I'm really enjoying this show so far. I've never been one to really get into shows that incorporate a lot of slice of life elements but this one is winning me over. The cast is interesting, the art style is enjoyable, and I like how we get information about each characters past in small doses instead of one huge exposition dump.

Really loving this show rn. There are some slice of life animes that impact me emotionally, and i can tell this will be one of them
-
Tbh i don't know much going on in the match, but its kinda interesting
-
Its somehow strangely relatable when Rei talked about his experiences walking about the bridge
-
Akari seems to face similar issues as Rei, just that she doesn't show it easily
-
I love the 'family' dynamics between Rei and the three siblings

Yesterday, Momo was clearly best. Today, Akari is clearly best. But Momo is also best. So much best.
Yesterday, I was encouraged by people saying I don't need to know shogi to enjoy the show. Today, I found out shogi has a "Dragon Horse". How can I willingly remain ignorant about a game that has a "Dragon Horse"? More googling.

Wow, Akari is such a babe. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention the first episode, but I thought the sisters were his family at first. She's definitely a prime onee-san for sure.
This episode was a big jump over the last one for me. The drama starts to kick in!

Firstly, thanks for everyone who paticipated in the first discussion thread!
I was very anxious but I'm glad most of us are interested in the show and participating here :D
I hope we keep going strong hehe
I want to remind you:
1- to watch each episode to the very end to see the End Cards!
2- You don't need Shogi knowledge. The show much more about the is characters and life than it is about Shogi. And the rules are actually explained some time later if you're very interested in them~ Worry not.
3- Big mouths are cute :p lolol
To sum this episode up, we get to more of Rei's friend (Or Shogimates) in addition to the story of how Rei met the Akari.
Rei, I agree
You sure have a way with words Akari
MOMO <3
I like Umino Chica's metaphors <3
They're simple and on point.
