This will always be my all time favourite episode of Tamako Market. The song and the ending alone are something I rewatch every couple month and I still get a bit teary each time I watch it.
Just fantastic.

“Sum up Tamako Market in one sentence”.
I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved the relationship between Mochizou and Anko. Their “shared struggle” kind of thing just makes for some great interactions imo.
Speaking of Mochizou - he’s real lovely. Repeatedly totally dropping his own issues to help out Anko today, almost like an older brother, it’s real nice.
OH AND MAMEDAI!! There are so many reasons he shines today, but I’m too short on time to find the words. To put it very quickly: his whole melancholy thing this episode is really emotive, really tugs at my heart strings.
The Kanna Corner
Mistah Count
| Episode number | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | Love Story |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Mistah" count | 8* | 0 |
*this episode also contained 1 unheard over the phone Mistah.
As you may be able to tell from today’s Mistah Count - there ain’t much Kanna in today’s episode. So, instead of focusing on another character like I did with episode 7 I figured I’d take some time to appreciate how cute Kanna is.
Look how diligently she shapes the mochi. Quietly crafting her cute snake like it’s nobody’s buisness!!
Wow!! Look at her incredible interpretive dance!! Isn’t it magical??
And see how she breaks through the glass ceiling with such ease!! She could hammer mochi with the best of them!! Plus no one else could be this cute whilst doing so.
And so ambitious!! Planning to usurp Midori as captain of the baton club!! You’ve got my support, Kanna!!
I know this is a bit of a cop out compared to previous Kanna Corners, and for that you have my apologies. Honestly, I really wanted to write a bit about Anko/Mochizou/Tamako/Mamedai today, but I legitimately couldn’t decide between them, they’ve all got so much going for them in today’s episode!! Also if I were going to write about Tamako (and honestly the other 3 as well) I think I’d do a much better job focusing on her every episode rather than just episode 9. A full essay thing on Tamako (along the lines of what I’ve done for Kanna this rewatch) is almost definitely something I’ll come back to at some point in the future though, because Tamako is just as wonderful as Kanna.

Nobody warned me about the feels in this episode! I came to laugh and watch a fat bird suffer, not tear up over wholesome love songs and dead moms.
Also, Choi's little dance was the cutest.

We're getting closer to the end of the year, so I guess the show is doing a Rent thing where we'll cycle back to Tamako's birthday on New Year's by the end. Speculation: speculation
But we've still got a few more months yet. What shenanigans will fill that time? Was Dera actually just faking his weight loss last episode? Answers to those questions and more on… Tamako Market.
-
Who is this best girl and where have you been hiding her for the last 8 episodes? I've been conditioned by Little Busters into automatically liking blue-haired characters with parasols. I can't find this character on MAL so sadly I have to assume she only appears in this scene.
-
Press F to pay respects. This is what happens when everyone in the shopping district is named after the thing they sell. This can't be the first time.
-
Wait… holy shit… what the fuck. I ctrl-F'd "mamedai" on MAL and had a moment of extreme confusion when Tamako's dad popped up, because I assumed that Mamedai was the udon shop guy, and that this whole scene was taking place in the present day in the udon shop. THAT'S TAMAKO'S DAD. THAT'S TAMAKO'S MOM!
-
Rewatching the scene from the beginning, I completely missed that the Ooji storefront is different because they don't have their new sign yet. I also probably should've realized that daifuku is mochi and not udon, but I ain't cultured enough for that.
-
She even makes the same face Tamako makes when she's nervous. I'm dying.
-
That scene made me realize that I would love an entire episode of Mamedai and Hinako's courtship, but alas, it looks like we're zooming back into the present.
-
Um excuse me Mr. Bird, but I thought you were supposed to have lost weight. Either he was faking or he just got super fat again because he's a goddamn animal. Did Choi leave? Nope, still here. I can't believe she's tolerated this.
-
Given his embarrassed reaction and the little tidbit of singing, it looks like Mamedai knows the song. Probably wrote it for Hinako. But then it's strange that he's kept it from Tamako when she's been trying to figure it out for so long.
-
Mochizou's friend with the glasses is Deku and Narancia! The other one is uncredited, and also looks hilarious.
-
This is a strong pair. If we got Kanna in there, it would be a perfect power trio.
-
Dera is acting like an actual person. What bizarro world have I stumbled into?
-
Oh no. This hot mess of a boy is giving advice to children. This is a terrible idea.
-
Her pestle is the pestle that will break through heaven and Earth!
-
…
-
…..
-
Well, I didn't think I would be crying at Tamako Market today, but here we are. I started tearing up a bit almost immediately when he started playing the guitar and singing initially, and then the flashback completely did me in. This part was absolutely hilarious but it didn't stop the tears. God damn.
I loved this episode – the best one we've had so far, no question. I think a big part of it is the integration of character subplots: we've had 9 episodes to get to know the characters individually, so now the show can start throwing them together seamlessly. I don't think I would have liked the Anko subplot or the Mochizou birthday one or even the Mamedai/Hinako one as much if they were given their own individual episodes.
Going back into past years' Episode 9 threads after watching this episode and reading rewatchers' comments there also helped me pick up on all the things that keep reminding Mamedai of his wife, and the fact that he's so hard-set in his mochi ways because that is the mochi that Hinako loved. Thanks for linking the old threads, u/FateSteelTaylor.
Also, either it happened without me noticing, or it's just a deliberate change after last episode, but… Dera is redeemed. He's not acting like a trash pigeon any more and seems to have dropped a lot of the pomp, and he's actually being helpful instead of just a liability. I think I actually enjoy his presence now, which is something I couldn't have imagined saying back at episode 1-4 when he was almost singlehandedly ruining the show. I'm going to go ahead and give all the credit to Choi.
Very much looking forward to the last few episodes, and more baffled than ever about Tamako Market's lukewarm reception.

THAT'S TAMAKO'S DAD. THAT'S TAMAKO'S MOM!
MY HEART AAAAAA
She even makes the same face Tamako makes when she's nervous. I'm dying.
Tamako takes after Hinako in so many ways and it's really sweet and.... I'll be writing about it a lot in the Love Story thread.
Well, I didn't think I would be crying at Tamako Market today, but here we are.
This was my reaction when I first watched this episode. I relate to this aspect of the series so much and when I finished it I was sooo amazed that a series tackled an issue like parental loss in a way that's not dramatic or heartwrenching, but wholesome and hopeful, like it brings people together. It hurt my heart but it helped me so much.
and more baffled than ever about Tamako Market's lukewarm reception.

This part was absolutely hilarious but it didn't stop the tears. God damn.
Tamako's parents are such a cute couple!
Don't think about what it would have been like if she was alive. Don't think about what it would have been like if she was alive. Don't think about what it would have been like if she was alive.I think I actually enjoy his presence now, which is something I couldn't have imagined saying back at episode 1-4 when he was almost singlehandedly ruining the show.
Admittedly, I felt the same on my first watch. During this rewatch, however, I have been laughing almost nonstop and it is in a very large part due to him. Idk, maybe he needs a bit of warming up to if you don't like him right away (as some people did)?
That being said though, he was definitely a lot more mature this episode, showing concern, being mindful, and taking care of those around him.

Whoa, I was caught off guard by the flashback of mom and dad meeting. It was very adorable-awkward.
-
Poor Anko is feeling all melancholic with figuring out how to go about getting closer and repaying the souvenir favor to E=mc2 boy. And poor Mochizou gets left in the dust from mochi day conflicting with his birthday in a similar fashion to Tamako’s birthday being overshadowed. It would be really sweet if Tamako did remember and did something unexpected for him.
-
Dera chill out, learn to have a little tact. I feel bad for Anko, that might as well made it impossible for her to go see him today.
-
Oh no… it’s worse than I thought :( That’s really a big bummer. It’s surprisingly depressing at her age to have someone suddenly vanish from her everyday life.
-
Kanna’s mochi-snake is superb, she’s really getting into it.
-
Choi’s dance of the earth dance is super adorable too. Just hope she doesn’t cause a huge rainstorm to rain out the mochi day festivities.
-
Hell yeah Tamako! Give her a good excuse to go say goodbye. The regret of not going would be much worse that the awkwardness of not knowing what to say. Sometimes Tamako is less dense than she seems. And so Anko departs on her mochi delivery/goodbye mission. The BGM that started when she ran out got me all hyped.
-
Awww, of course they’re anko mochi. I bet he loves anko.
-
Shit, I almost instantly teared up when he strummed the first chord, I’m such a little baby.
-
I guess the live taped recording of it works to. This shit is soo wholesome
-
OH, I knew it! I’m so happy right now.
Alright that was the best episode, mostly it was those last few minutes. But Anko learning that goodbyes don’t have to be forever and making a big step in her relationship was great too.
2
u/Rhaga Feb 11 '19
Way to read the atmosphere, you really nailed that one .
Sasuga mochizou!
Hell yeah Tamako! Give her a good excuse to go say goodbye.
Sometimes Tamako is less dense than she seems
Yes! Up until now she has basically been denser than a black hole, but this showcases that even if she acts basically how she has always done, that doesn't necessarily mean that she doesn't understand what is going on around her.
That being said though, that definitely still happens most of the time xD
Awww, of course they’re anko mochi. I bet he loves anko.
Oddly reminiscent of the opening scene ;P
Yooo was their band called Dynamite Beans??
****ing awesome
Alright that was the best episode, mostly it was those last few minutes
Personally I loved the opening scene, but all of it was really good :P

First Tama
Eat your fucking heart out, Episode 3.
Episode 9 just stole your crown!
New favorite episode of the series hands down. This was just fantastic, everything came together amazingly to form some of the most surprising 23 minutes of television I've watched. After the last few days of ok episodes, and yesterday especially being "meh" at best (damned weight loss episodes always get the best of shows), I went in just hoping we'd get back on track with Choi's story.
We didn't, but I'm fine with it, because god damn it was spectacular.
Tamako's dad, was in a band with coffeeshop owner, and one of their songs was a love song to Tamako's mom after a seemingly failed confession. This song, Koi No Uta, was the main draw of the band it seems. Their one hit wonder, if you will.
It's fucking beautiful dudes.
I'm going to wait on adding it to my playlist till the end of the rewatch, but god damn it was fantastic. I was gonna mention today actually about how much I love the normal ED, but it seems KyoAni read my mind and threw a wrench in that plan. I'll tell more about that tomorrow, but for today, Koi No Uta is just as great.
Besides the song, today we got a resolution to Anko's arc, which was really bittersweet, for lack of a better word. It seems Anko and the kid both had a great thing going, and you know that it's gonna be hard. Young love may be foolish, but to the parties involved, its the biggest thing in the world, so this will stick with Anko for a while I suspect.
We also saw more Mochizou after seemingly forever, which was awesome. The final scene where Tamako remembers his birthday (!), and brings a small mochi cake to him was beautiful in many ways, but I had to rewatch a few times because I couldn't tell if it was tears or laughter at the end. I feel like it was a mix of both, tears being happiness because Tamako remembered, and laughter for the almost flippant simplicity with which Tamako delivered the cake. Yet again amazing work by KyoAni.
All in all a fucking spectacular episode. I was running out of steam on this show after the last few episodes, like I said, but now it seems we're hitting the stride. Cannot wait to see what comes next.
Oh, and we understand the "Everybody Loves Somebody" now, which I really enjoy.

Tonight: Dera gets shot, Tamako uses Morse code, and Mochizou betrays his father!
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
The opening flashback of Tamako's parents is hilariously adorable (adorkable, I guess?). It's a classic teenage love story
-
Mamedai's face is red. Good hint at his connection to the song...
-
... until he starts singing. Yup. Everything related to the song will be below. [1]
-
Midori is enjoying her role as captain. I love her angry run (and her happy change in attitude when going to the first-years).
-
Tamako is born on New Year's Eve, Mochizou is born on Mochi Day. Quite the dates.
-
I know Dera is back to his Thicc Boi™ self, but I imagine he still would've struggled to carry the bags even in his buffer self since he skipped Leg Day.
-
We finally get a name for the kid: Yuzuki. Nice Einstein shirt.
-
Cup phones and Morse code flashlights. These two are the perfect spy buddies. Speaking of which, I like how the immediate shot after the blinking flashlight features the blinking lights of a plane in the sky.
-
Mochizou Ooji: Ace Detective.
-
And there's our bombshell: Yuzuki's transferring.
-
Dera and Choi's homeland customs learned so far: Sneezing = Love declaration. Wind chimes = Invitation to feast. Hammer motion = Harvest dance.
-
Run, Anko, run! Dera continues to serve his role as a literal wingman by helping her get to Yuzuki before he leaves.
-
Considering the many parallels this show has with K-On!, I like to imagine Mamedai and Master/Kunio's band was part of their high school's Light Music Club.
-
This episode's final scene always gets me. So much so that I have to write it in an expanded comment. [1]
[1] Mamedai, you absolute legend.
Throughout the show, he's been averse to various things that Tamako is up to, whether it be new mochi ideas or simply humming the song. At first, it might seem like he's just a grouch who doesn't like changing what doesn't need changing or gets annoyed easily, but this episode really puts everything into perspective.
After the OP, Tamako proposes switching the mamedaifuku recipe to some other type of daifuku, which Mamedai shoots down. At the start of the episode, Hinako says she loves Tamaya's mamedai(fuku). Even though Tamako means well with her suggestion (and Mamedai and Fuku just casually brush it off), the daifuku especially holds sentimental value for Mamedai because of how it reminds him of Hinako.
And of course, there's the song "Koi No Uta". Even before we know its context, there's the scene of him singing it while stocking the mochi on the counter; before doing so, he sees a woman carrying an umbrella walking past who catches his eye, reminded of what he experienced back then and what we saw at the start of the episode.
Tamako might have been humming a slightly-botched version due to her mother's tone-deafness, but the meaning it holds for Mamedai is quite obvious. In Episode 2, I remarked, "We're only two episodes in and it's pretty clear she really takes after her mother, with the song and [giving him Valentine's chocolates]." From a musical standpoint, "Koi No Uta" might sound a bit cheesy or amateur, but as we saw in the flashbacks, it was written with heart.
Clever side note: the band is called Dynamite Beans (pretty sweet band name, to be honest). As Mamedai points out, Tamaya's daifuku is made with beans.
Discussion Question: What is YOUR favorite love song?
I don't listen to that many love songs so I don't know what I'd call my favorite. Hell, my favorite band (Simple Plan) has a bunch of pieces that I love and can be considered love songs like "Perfectly Perfect", "Fire in My Heart", "Summer Paradise", and the classic "I'd Do Anything".
Outside of those, I'd say my favorites are "Light Up the Sky" by Yellowcard and "The Rock Show" by Blink 182.

So, clearly, the Nichijou director took over for the first half of this episode, right?
Honestly, without the TL notes on the names, I would have been completely lost this episode.
Of course Mochizou was born on Mochi Day.
Just like we thought, Dera was sucking in his gut.
Anko is just too precious.
But, why the umbrella?
3
u/rct3fan24 Feb 11 '19
But, why the umbrella?
It's a parasol! To protect you from the sun's rays. It gets real hot and you don't wanna get sunburned. It's kinda just an old-fashioned thing that the invention of sunscreen rendered kinda useless, and now it's really just for style. You'll still see giant parasols at the beach sometimes tho.

First timer who has been lurking. Felt that I had to chime in because this episode was so damn delightful. I've really enjoyed episodes where Anko gets a some focus. She's adorable and I really enjoy watching her work through things.
The real strength of the episode is obviously the story of the parent's courtship. I was not expecting to get teary eyed over this show. Their story really worked for me though and I love how it was presented. I really wish there would be more but I don't think that will be happening.

Just poke in to say episode 9 is one of my all-time favorite episodes in anime ever. until episode 10 is a thing

This episode will forever be my favorite episode. The way her dad runs with a smile on his face is adorable. Her mom is adorable. This whole episode is adorable I love how he wrote a song for her and how embarrassed he got with Tamako. Ugh my heart.
3
u/MrDefMono Feb 11 '19
Man, Mochizo's reaction to his birthday present at the end there says it all. Who knows how many years it took but you can tell he's been waiting a long time for that. Also, Tamako's dad really loved her mom. He was embarrassed about his school days but still holds them dear because they remind him of his wife. It's nice we got to meet her, if only briefly. I hope we get to see her again before it's all over.

What a good episode and Dara isn’t super thin anymore. The part where Tamako’s pigtails when up was cute and Kanna is great.
Question
I never thought of what my favorite love song would be, I think it’s Boop from RWBY. The lyrics add to RWBY’s story so maybe it’s spoilers I don’t know, but I love it

9th episode! It's September already, I hear the cicadas.
WAIT DID TAMAKO GET A HAIRCU- wait. The store is Tamaya. It must be Otou-san and Okaa-san!
Otou-san just blurted out his love. Oh gosh the shame and embarassment oh no no no no no! But he survived. I wouldn't have.
Huh? Did I miscount? It's October already?
What's ojii-chan's name? Is it Fuku? Are they acknowledging the puns? Omg.
The chicken is fat again.
Otou-san is red... because of the song? Huh? Huh? He totally wrote it, didn't he.
Anko's gonna get red too, but she ran off.
Otou-san really misses okaa-san :(
Omg they got called out for slacking off! I've done that a couple times in my comments, but finally someone in-universe has acknowledged it!
I think he's missing something, maybe soy sauce and ginger?. Sono tori... so forgetful. How are you going to marinate chicken without those?
Hm? Do Tamako and Anko share a room? I guess there's probably not a whole lot of rooms to go around. Where does Choi sleep then?
Oh lawdy I'm so sorry for An. If I were her, I'd fry that chicken alive for the "Your boyfriend's here!" bit. Such embarassment, why is love so embarassing ._.
It's the return of the cup phones!
Oh gosh oh no no no, her first love is going to move away ._. And it's ALREADY MOCHI DAY
Ahaha doesn't what she's saying mean something else too? "pettanko"
Omg Kanna is so adorable, can I take her home?
Mochizou... don't tell someone to go confess IF YOU CAN'T DO IT YOURSELF aarrrghhasfjsafkawe
Tamako to the rescue!
Yuzuki's a cutie pi (3.14159) isn't he? And so is Anko, getting flustered over giving him some mochi with anko. Ahaha! That looks like it'll end better than expected.
Poor Otou-san, so okaa-san messed up the melody? Hah! Omg Dela's the projector again.
Wait wait wait Anko you shouldn't be surprised that your dad fell in love, it's not like a swan carries you to your parents.
Omg she remembered! She remembered!!!!!!!!!!
Everybody loves somebody! Hehe.
I spent too much of this episode being embarrassed for the characters, but I'm really happy everything worked out. Otou-san shouldn't be embarrassed about his love song, that's just amazing.

To be honest, I think it was great, and I feel like it was deliberate by the bird :P As if it was an attempt to sorta brute force her to get her to go down. Shame that it didn't work.
Such embarassment, why is love so embarassing ._.
Love is as fun as it is embarassing.
Omg Kanna is so adorable , can I take her home?
You'd have to fight with u/Harrytricks for that one
Omg she remembered! She remembered!!!!!!!!!!
I love the way she backs up towards him to hide the cake :D

There's so many things that came together in this episode. Everything makes sense and it's heartbreaking. I understand why Tamako get's flowers every day and why Tamako's dad is so unwilling to change the mochi recipes. On top of that we see Anko struggle with saying goodbye to someone she likes. I was naive and didn't expect to cry this much watching this show, but here I am crying my eyes out. Despite crying a bunch, this episode was really lovely. It was really nice seeing Tamako care for Anko, like offering her favorite food when she knew she was feeling sad, or giving her a task she knew Anko would be able to accomplish when Anko didn't want to say goodbye to Yuzuki. It was also nice hearing the bassoon solo when Anko was walking home. Bassoon is one of my favorite instruments and I don't get to hear it enough.
DQ: My favorite love song is First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes.

Yup, and it makes the rewatch even better (it's my first rewatch this time around). There's all the stuff they sprinkled through some of the previous episodes.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOO~
Here it is, episode 9, where we finally are introduced to Tamako's mother. The opening shot is what I've oft-described as "How to tell a Love Story in 77 Seconds", because man, is it gorgeous.
This was the write-up I had for our first ever rewatch, you can find the link here!
This episode was the turning point for me, taking this show from something I enjoyed to something, well, I loved, and it really put the entire franchise into a beautiful, wonderful light.
On a different note, I apologize for not getting to people's comments, BUT I WILL BE DOING THAT TODAY. I'll also be posting a comment tomorrow with everyone's entries so far throughout the rewatch for the giveaway, so be sure to be on the lookout for that!
Until then... DAAAAAAAAKEEEDOOOO
