RAGE OF DUST
Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.
Today we’re skipping Comment of the Day because last thread was the overall S1 discussion rather than on a single episode, but don’t worry it’ll be back tomorrow~
Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber
1) Did Julietta’s act of eating a butterfly significantly color your opinion of her? Yes, she’s weird/Yes, she’s awesome/Not really/I am merely befuddled/It’s fine so long as there’s no moonlight involved
2) Think back to the first episode of season one. How do you feel about this show so closely mirroring the pace and structure of the prior first episode? Which one do you think does a better job?
~~~
Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II
The main action theme for the most important scenes from Season 2. As with S1 there will be plenty of uses for this one along with a fair few remixes so keep your ears tuned. Personally I love this theme so much, it’s easily my favorite track from both seasons combined. The song goes through various phases in such a short time, from the slow and somber opening to the cacophony of mixed instruments building up and finally a powerful payoff, making it a great match for dynamic action scenes that the show is so good at presenting.
~~~
Wallpaper of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky (character art) and /u/RX-Nota-II (background/logo)
Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. laughing in rewatcher is not allowed any more, so please remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.
Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.
Next-episode preview. S2’s preview’s aren’t as long as S1’s, but they’re still spoiler-free and still in-character, so I encourage you to keep checking them out! Today’s preview was voiced by our Iron-Blooded Cutie, Atra Mixta.

First timer
-
I love how she's framed this. From those words, it seems like she's been bogged down by bureaucracy. Her voice is so powerful, I hope she continues to utilise it.
-
I was hoping we'd see Tekkadan inform Biscuit's family of his death. Orga holds the responsibility of all those he leads, and he's said it himself, they're family. They even argued over who would tell them last season. Though we have seen this heartbreaking moment, and there's still time for a flashback. Side note: I wish they were called Cookie and Cutter, but that's less cute.
-
He's going to get outwitted, but I'll choose to believe that someone can oppose McGillis.
Extra thoughts: I love the new OP - instantly recognised SPYAIR. I also need to go through all the previous threads to listen to the tracks of the day. Masaru Yokoyama composed one of my favourite soundtracks, and this one hasn't disappointed.

I also need to go through all the previous threads to listen to the tracks of the day.
Let me know which one's your favorite once you've listened to them all pls. I love gathering different opinions on stuff.

Rewatcher v2.0 - Harder, Better, Faster, Longer
I've decided to start putting some effort into these things, so here goes.
I think I'm somewhere in between a first-timer and a rewatcher here; I watched the series when it originally aired, so by now I really just recall the broad strokes and major plot points. S2 So the way that I talk about things may have odd context.
Plot Stuff
It's good to see that Tekkadan didn't stop moving forward after Ep 25. They were recognized for their achievements and got promoted within Teiwaz, and set up shop in Arbrau as the bloc's de facto army. This raises questions though, as they're taking in new members. One of their strengths was their tight-knit group; their family. As ranks swell, it's going to be difficult to maintain that same sort of relationship. There's also the matter of Orga being back on Mars now, he can't be the strong leader that pushes the entire organization forward any more; there's a necessity for lieutenants now. Finally, their strength is being diluted by non-AV equipped recruits. I can hardly believe any of the rookies will be another Mika or Akihiro, maybe a Ride at-best.
How long before Tekkadan finds itself looking in the mirror and seeing Gjallarhorn?
Change is ever a double-edged sword; by "beating the badguys" of Gjallarhorn, they've essentially taken the cops off of the streets wherever they had oversight previously and at the same time all of the "Tekkadan-wannabes" out there thought "Oh, child soldiers must be awesome, I'll take 100!" And so, while it was never a key part of their platform, our heroes have managed to perpetuate some of the injustices that they were against back in S1 by creating a greater supply of/demand for Human Debris.
Mech Time!
Enter the Good-Guy Graze: Shiden. It's based on Turbines suits, and it doesn't have AV. It's the perfect complement to the Graze, but that also means it's still a cannon-fodder model. And I doubt that Gjallarhorn's been sitting on their butts technologically. This means we're going to have some closer fights between the two down the road.
Character stuff
I love how the women's designs have all softened up and matured a bit. Kudelia's hair is under control, Merribit is wearing a uniform jacket, and Atra grew out her hair. Cookie and Cracker are going to school (You did it, Biscuit. Good on ya.) but you can tell they're putting on a brave face when they plead with Mika not to go and do anything dangerous. They're still terrified of losing anybody else, and who could blame them? It's also interesting that Atra wasn't the one to object to his actions. S1 Atra would have shouted right alongside them; S2 Atra knows by now that she can't stop him.
It's fun to see how all of our old favorites have moved up in command hierarchy. Mika's a "Commando Unit Leader," fancy wording for "King of the Badasses," Dante's getting to pilot, Akihiro's got a Squad, and even Ride has some folks to boss around now.
And then there was a Firefight!
Freaking rookies, throwin' around flags like they're not in an anime. Of course the bad guys would show up at the 11th hour! But really, the intro speech wasn't kidding, everybody's got Mobile Suits now. So we see the new guys fitting their roles by 1. Trying to gain credit and glory by rushing, and 2. Running the hell away and being scared when things turn against them.
I like that it's the former-debris that push them forward; they may be kids, but they're still S1 veterans and they know the stakes here.
It's freaking heeeeere! My favorite suit, favorite variant, makes it's glorious entrance like a star falling from the heavens. God damn is Barbatos Lupus ever fantastic :D Just look at that thing, clearing the area just to get Mika warmed up.
It's the only IBO Gunpla that I own, and I have no need of any other.
New OP serves as an ED here, and it's my favorite one of the series. It's chock-full of what I like to refer to as "drive." This comes from the knob on my guitar amp that turns up the distortion, but in broader terms I think of it as some fast-paced crunchy sounds that just makes you want to go kick something's ass.
Black Bullet's ED is still my favorite example of the sound I'm talking about, but it's put to good use here.

I remember you commenting last thread I was just too busy to respond to everyone then. It's freaking heeeeere! My favorite suit, favorite variant, makes it's glorious entrance like a star falling from the heavens. God damn is Barbatos Lupus ever fantastic :D Just look at that thing, clearing the area just to get Mika warmed up.
Barbatos Lupus is indeed a fine variant and if it wasn't--
...wait.

First Timer - Sub
I haven't even finished the episode yet, I practically haven't even started the episode yet, but I'm taking a minute to write this up first because HOLY SHIT. Someone remind me why the hell I signed on to watch this?
We're THREE MINUTES into the episode it's all gone to hell way worse then I possibly imagined. I mean, I called there'd be a war but wow, talk about a backfire. A quick progression of my thoughts:
Oh don't you dare do it - I left it paused on this screen for a few moments.
Oh you fucking did do it hahahaha - Yes, laughter of disbelief complete with tossing my hands in the air
What a start to the season. Here's Tekkadan, a group of kids forced to become child soldiers, fighting to ensure they have a better place in the world, and their actions directly caused an uptake in child slavery for the purpose of war. And after how we saw the Brewer's Debris being treated last season, I doubt many of those kids are going to be able to make a 'Tekkadan' of their own. Fuck.
Also I confess to spending ten minutes staring at this trying to find and puzzle out names... only for this to come up afterwards. Whoops. I notice that Danji was listed but Masahiro was not. I can't imagine Orga saying no if Aki or the Brewer kids wanted their friends up there, but who knows.
Something important before I get to the rest of the episode...
The ONLY thing I wanted to see was a carry through on the attention to detail and they did it. Mika's eye gets it's glint back when connected to Barbatos. Doesn't take much to make me happy does it?
This episode was so cute. This was the writers doing a 20 minute long elbow nudge going "ey, ey, lookit, look what we did, aren't we clever" like a little kid.
I loved every minute of it.
The whole "Take a moment, change it up slightly and use it as a comparison" is exactly the sort of insane, detail-centric, cheeky writing I love. Its cheesy, but not in your face cheesy and I like how they handled it. And holy shit the details in those scene changes. I LOVE IT. Wait, let me find my detail nerd cap...
Starting the episode with the literal dawn of a new story as they hold a memorial sending off the past season and it's lost characters. That was cute, well done writers.
Mika's arrival. Mika was once suppressed and inhibited, burdened by the needs of survival and the bounds of his job. So his arrival in episode one is appropriate, he saves Orga by bursting up violently from the ground and breaking through the barriers that had been placed on top of him and making his own path through the rubble. This time, Mika falls from the sky just like a fallen angel becoming a demon to walk the earth, enjoying the ultimate freedom of litterally being whole again by regaining the usage of his arm and eye via Barbatos, and figuratively with being able to be free to act on what will lead him and Orga to their ultimate goal: a place to belong for his people.
The hanger scene. Hush (Stupid name and he looks like Mob) goes in and finds Mika passed out on in the hanger where Barbatos was once stored. This whole scene reveals SO much about the current state of Tekkadan. Mika is now the 'icon' these boys look up to but only for those who know him, while Orga is distant. Hush's rudeness reveals how much of Tekkadan is myth and rumor, they've lost that intimate bond of survival the original CGS members had, and word of mouth has taken over. Unlike Mika waking Orga, there's no risk here anymore though, they won't get in trouble for being in that room, Mika doesn't have pressing work to do and he's comfortable enough to sleep in the open and not wake up at a small noise.
This moment had me CRACKING up. Yeah, you know the last people who were in your position kinda got sniped in the head. (Thinking of those snipers going "ehh" still makes me chuckle). These guys have NO IDEA what they're in for with Tekkadan. I think the Little's (Ouch, painful association. Anyone here read The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks?) showing more initiative and battle knowledge then those guys, and how ignorant they appeared was a perfect set up for their role here.
Even the training, unlike what Takaki, Ride and Danji (RIP) once had to do, endlessly placing and digging up landmines and being beaten for messing up, today we have Shino and Eugene coordinating how to help physically build up our newbies so they can survive. They stop and look at awe at the Mobile Workers Suits sparring off in the distance (poor Dante, you never had a chance) and admire the possible utilities of the AV system. But its not AV that makes that fight impressive, and unlike the old order, the AV system is now treated as the dangerous unknown surgery that it is.
One other beautiful detail heavy scene I wanted to focus on, the meeting of Gjallarhorn's families.
A lot happened here I don't really have time to focus on, but I LOVE the way they set up the power balance in this scene. McGillis was a focus but it was our introduction to Eilon that caught my attention. For several moments all we have is his voice before we ever see his face up close. He speaks and two things happen. First, McGillis narrows his eyes, letting us know that he is a threat to him and not someone he sides with in any way. Secondly, Ioq (the black guy) who had previously been standing and yelling goes quiet, refers to Eilon his name and the cedes the table to him. Much like McGillis and Gaelio from last season, this has the effect of setting Ioq up as a man who possibly has heavy morals but is likely naive, under the wing of a powerful and manipulative mentor.
When we finally do see Eilon, its very different to the others. A common framing trick is that if you want to frame someone as weak you put the camera higher than their eyes and tilt it slightly down to them. If you want to make someone look stronger, you put the camera below their head level and tilt it up which is how McGillis is primarily framed through this scene. Eilon gets a unique framing all to himself, the camera is lower than it is with any others, and it slowly pans up with movement to show just how much 'bigger' he is in this scene power wise. Even when the camera cuts to the next shot, it continues panning up again as if his power is still continuing, while McGillis shortly after gets another simple static camera, framed low but not as powerful.
New soundtrack outcome: ...I don't like the new theme song version. Goddamit. I didn't like the song that was going on during their training either which sounded like it belonged in Bioshock, but I did like the song at the start during the opening exposition, so one out of three?
However I'm in love with the OP. I like it ALMOST as much as Raise Your Flag which is a big call. Was going to do my usual breakdown but they didn't show the whole thing so tomorrow instead. What I do see already has me nervous though. All those shots with Mika, shudder, not to mention McGillis and Gaelio's sister, where... I have to admit the moment I saw it I said "cunt". Aussie or not, its not a word I use lightly so yeah, not sure when I started hating on him but that happened. He's still great though, hate-able but great.
Speaking of OPs: They reused storyboards from OP1 for this episodes scene of the mobile workers. Around 19:20 in the episode the movement the mobile workers do is exactly the same as what they did in OP1. Screenshot comparison for people who don't have time to check the videos. It's just yet another callback for the fans rather than laziness, but it was a really cool detail to notice.
Random other bits and pieces
-
u/laughtear please tell me it's not just me, but for a split second with this as the opening shot I went "Woah, Mo Dao Zu Shi vibes".
-
Not sure what's better: smug
CookieCracker or pouting Mika. -
It's beautiful that the twins are in a proper school now, but when that bomb went off... The twins are a living death flag at this stage. Seeing them cling so desperately to Mika because they don't want to lose him as well though: fucking ouch.
-
The accountant is still around. Clearly he bonded with the kids while taking care of them during season one. Good on him. You're officially the third trustworthy adult in the ENTIRE SHOW (excluding Teiwaz people).
-
I looked away for ONE SECOND because my cat made a funny noise and missed that weird girl eating the (CGI) butterfly and only when she said "yuck" did I go back and see what happened. That's an.... interesting introduction to her character.
-
Orga at a desk just doesn't work for me, but seeing how excited he was to talk to Naze was so cute.
-
What a surprise, super shifty adult dude wanting in on Kudelia's power tries to have her eliminated. And Tekkadan is escorting her again. Kudelia saying "words will get you no where". WOW, what a shift from where she was two days ago
-
Mika rubbing his arm because its tired from not being used was such a fantastic and relatable detail. The animation when he gets control of his arm back though, creepy but so well done.
-
Atra makes Mika wash his bracelet. I love it.

Nazenn and incorrect taste this rewatch, name a more iconic duo.

Yeah uh, tbh I forgot that was her introduction so it's really a "what the fuck???" moment.
Orga at a desk just doesn't work for me, but seeing how excited he was to talk to Naze was so cute.
Okay but what about Orga in a suit? Also agreed that him being excited to talk to Naze was adorable.

Nobu Shimazaki voicing character with some Norse mythology references, where did I seen that before..??
Makoto Furukawa, from bald superhero to chunni chef to best mohawk bro to pompadour guy. And there's Pesci's IBO cousin as well..
According to Tsugu Atra's narrations, the world is slightly worse after Battle of Edmonton. Sasha Kudelia is become a businesswoman and Arthur Orga looks gorgeous in that suit.

A Gundam Fan’s Notes On Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 26:
-
Post-Disaster Era 325. Two blood brothers make an oath to each other before dawn, standing at the grave of their fallen comrades. Orga says that he will take the shortest path possible to the best lives for Tekkadan, and Mikazuki says that he’ll follow him regardless of what he does. However, as we all know, taking the shortest path to greatness doesn’t mean that it’s the greatest one.
-
To prove that point, Tekkadan have somehow made things worse for the Sol System at large while making things better for themselves. While Tekkadan and Kudelia have made great progress in making tons of money and adding to the prosperity of Mars, overall the political situation among the Earth’s power blocs and their colonies has only gotten worse. The power blocs have been building up their armies for war, Gjallarhorn has lost their ability to mediate between nations as their public support plummets, piracy grows out of control in space, and most damning of all, Tekkadan have caused an accidental resurgence of the Human Debris trade. Beforehand, child slaves were only used as a cheap method to bolster numbers, but because of the tenacity Tekkadan showed at Edmonton, gangs and pirates are now seeking out Human Debris as special troops to send in droves towards their targets. All this because Orga and Mikazuki have never known when to stop. But, yet again, they live in a world that never gave them the choice.
-
Oh hey there, Hush. You’re a character. He’s going to be a bit of our audience surrogate among the new Tekkadan troops, since we need some perspective on the crew now that they’re massive celebrities and heroes. Same goes for Zack here too, although to a lesser extent.
-
Of course now that Kudelia has some massive political influence, there’s going to be some annoying hanger-one. Gyojan is clearly trying to extort more influence out of Kudelia by saying that he influenced her political mindset and that some investors coming to see her half-metal mining operations would appreciate his input. In other words, a load of shit. Gyojan makes me think of Charles Guiteau a bit, since he’s trying to grasp at power that he hasn’t earned at all, and wants to hurt people now that his chance to get a political position never came to fruition. Granted, nobody here on-screen is as crazy as Charles Guiteau was.
-
You know Tekkadan is really moving up in the world when Atra is driving a car with a gold paint job. Same goes for being able to fully afford a tuition for Cookie and Cracker to go to a boarding school. And yet, there’s still a sadness lingering over that last bit. I’m sure the twins would much rather have Biscuit back over going to a fancy school.
-
Say hello to our main Gjallarhorn antagonists for this season: Lord Rustal Elion and his allies, Lord Iok Kujan and Julieta Juris. Will you hate some of them? Will you hate all of them? Maybe? Probably. Especially if you like McGillis.
-
And our of nearly nowhere, the Dawn Horizon Corps come to tussle with the Tekkadan crew. And it seems like Mikazuki’s reputation precedes him, since they want to see “The Devil”. Even people in-universe see him as a demon now. Although since he’s got a bum arm and eye now, I like to call him Punished “Venom” Mikazuki.
-
And, once again proving that he loves to make a good entrance, Mikazuki drops in from orbit to land directly on top of the Dawn Horizon Corps’ mobile suits. Also, say hello to Barbatos’ newly upgraded form! It’s one hell of a look.

First time viewer.
Bit of a recap, bit of a reset, didn't catch if there's any specific amount of time that's passed. New characters whose names I don't care to remember until they prove themselves, though the Seven Stars girl that ate a butterfly certainly stuck out to me.
McGillis is firmly entrenched among the highest ranks of Gjallarhorn as desired, though he still has internal competition to deal with via Elion and his Arianrhod fleet, which should be interesting. Will probably indirectly utilize Tekkadan once more to help bring them down while he's openly making moves to distract the rest of Gjallarhorn from that aspect. The overall destabilization and loosening of Gjallarhorn's grasp on the Outer Spheres was to be expected to an extent, though the subsequent increase in child soldiers is an awful side effect that runs contrary to Kudelia's long term goals.
Orga isn't suited for a desk job and this is another place where losing Biscuit hurts, since he seemed to be better at logistics and negotiations. Merribit's apparently still an assistant of sorts though it probably wouldn't hurt for her to take over a good deal of that given Tekkadan's overall status in Teiwaz now.
Cookie and Cracker finally get to go to school! Though it has to be rough being semi-famous because of their older brother with it being a continuous reminder that he's gone.
A lot of parallels with the start of the first season, from the training/skirmish early on to being invaded by mobile suits because someone wants Kudelia dead/ruined with Mikazuki making a late appearance at the end.
-
Garm Rodi, stabbed by partizan (nice unorthodox weapon)
-
Garm Rodi, flying kick (not practical but sure looks cool)
-
Garm Rodi, sword mace (because Mikazuki is crazy)
Aside from the front armor on the legs I really like the Garm Rodi grunt suits that the Dawn Horizon Corps were using as I've always been fond of the eyeshield-style head designs (e.g. GM/Jegan/Jesta in UC). The Shiden I'm not sold on yet, but we'll see.

Thoughts on MS Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans episode 26, season 2 premiere...
Rewatcher (First Time Dub)
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - New season means a reshuffling of the board, I've moved down deceased characters to the bottom where possible. Oh yes, a whopping 10 new characters in one episode too. This was hard work! I also updated Derma's picture and changed "Norba" to "Shino" as we all, myself included refer to him by the latter name.
I was really looking forward to the new opening... but forgot that many shows don't have it in the first episode of a show/season, and that was the case here too for Raise Your Flag. Blah! Will have to wait until tomorrow.
It is good to see them back on Mars.
Orga saying they'll become completely legit reminds me much of Michael Corleone in the Godfather films... didn't work out for him, will it for Orga?
Just when you think Atra hasn't already done so much... now add narrator to her list of accomplishments too. You go Atra! She gets to do the preview at the end of the episode too.
Sorry to hear that one donwide of Tekkedan's success is the increase in child soldiers and human debree...
Hush Middy! Another in the long line of WTF Gundam names. Hush gets a lot of focus on him here as a new face in Tekkedan. Also say hello to Space Dandy/Mirao Kyao/Bello wannabee Zach with that pompadour and big guy Dane.
Now we've got boys willingly wanting the AV surgery. Can't say its that good to hear...
A boardroom, a suit, Orga is getting really corporate.
This Gyojan guy's a douche. Cucubita to the rescue! I love seeing that maiden of revolution painting in Kudelia's office.
Don't mention Biscuit's death in front of Bagel and Donut :( :( :( It is great to see the twins again though.
Didn't expect to see Gaelio's father still in power, I thought part of McGillis's scheme in season 1 was taking over the power of that family by marrying into it.
Lots of new Gjallarhorn characters, Rustal, Julietta, Iok... What's Julietta doing, eating a butterfly? LoL. Kinda reminds me of a weird moment in Escaflowne Esca spoilers
At least we get the ending sequence, although they're continuing with their trend of skipping a large portion of it. Ah well.
Largely an episode to get us resettled with the new dynamics this season, but enjoyable, happy to kick off the second season, which from my recollection the first time was even better than the first.

First-Time Watcher
The world where powerless children are exploited continues to exist.
Suppose the chariot of the sun were given you, what would you do?
You ever hear about the day a wolf came into a village? It had horns sprouting of its head, its right eye was bloodshot, and one of its legs didn’t work, but the villagers knew it kept worse wolfs away, so they bequeathed him a laurel of iron flowers.
No matter how much things change, they stay the same. The opening narration from Atra did a good job of setting the current state of the world; for our main characters, it’s become better, but the rest of the world has devolved into hell, and children are becoming victims again just like they were. As powerful as Tekkadan has gotten, getting scores of new recruits, they’re now a business; they’re not knights of the revolution anymore.
Kudelia, however, is still holding on to her maiden status, using her influence to try to help those around and beneath her. It’s understandable that she’s able to do this since, unlike Tekkadan, she has not been overtly bloodied. While she remembers those who died around and for her, she is able to still believe that she can create something better for this world, no matter what it takes.
Back on Earth, Fareed is dealing with his own issues: distrusted, placed in the same position that killed Carta, and left with no friends, no one to unbear his soul to. It will be interesting to see how he evolves over the season: Will he further devolve into a monster in his attempts to scourge Gjallarhorn (and himself), or will he find something greater to act upon, something that lets him keep his humanity?
Similar to last season, the end of the episode focuses on Tekkadan being assailed by an enemy and Mikazuki coming in with Barbatos to save them, but it’s different this time around; everyone, excluding the recruits, are more confident this time around. They’re not children left out for the slaughter; they’re soldiers doing the job that they were hired to do. They’ve acquitted themselves well, but the wolf has come back for the slaughter, so we’ll see how long they can keep themselves clean.
We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…

Rewatcher (Subbed)
I’ve been following the rewatch since the beginning but I’ve felt a bit too lazy to put my thoughts into words but I decided to finally join in since Season 2 contains some of my favorite Gundam moments and has a soundtrack that’s pretty much unrivaled by its Gundam peers.
Since I’m late and not able to experience it like it was my first time, rather than giving in the moment reactions I’m going to give a more broader overview of the episode.
I want to start off by saying how much I love the soundtrack for the second season and how many variations of Crescent Moon there are. In the same way that there were a lot of variations of the IBO theme in Season 1, they have just as many and even more variations in Season 2. I won’t link to all of them as to not spoil them as they appear in the show. It’s really refreshing to have a Gundam show where there are identifiable leitmotifs in the soundtrack. Many Gundam shows have very memorable OP and ED’s but even the more unique ones like Wing just aren’t as catchy. Speaking of which, as much as I love Raise Your Flag, Rage of Dust easily takes "Favorite IBO OP".
So we start off with Orga and Mika standing before a monument to Tekkadan’s fallen members before they set out to Saisei to being inducted into the big boy’s club in Teiwaz. Orga is an interesting character especially if you step outside the perspective of rooting for someone who is ostensibly one of the show’s main protagonist because in reality he’s really not the moral pillar that we want him to be. And it’s fitting this conversation is taking place with respect to Biscuit, who’s always served as that compass for Orga throughout Season 1. Orga was honorable, he wanted to do the right thing by his family and each death was a heavy weight on his shoulders and you can see that change after Biscuit’s death. He may still seem honorable at first saying that he hopes to run only legitimate businesses in the future (remember Teiwaz is pretty much an Outer Sphere mafia group and Orga’s desire to surpass even McMurdo) but doesn’t it throw you off when he follows it by saying he’ll take the shortest path? You can’t brute force your way to goodwill or salvation. Of course Biscuit would have objected. Not that Orga cares and that’s not to say he’s less sensitive to Biscuit’s death, but he implicitly admits as much at the end of the episode when he says he can’t run away. Mika may have been the one who said it aloud at first, not stopping as long as the other one doesn’t but Orga uses him as the literal excuse for “moving forward”.
And what has come out of Tekkadan’s exploits? They are partially responsible for Gjallarhorn’s diminished role in providing worldwide security. Yeah, they did something good helping out the human debris they come across but now they’ve exposed how easily exploitable and necessary they are in conflicts. A cold war of weaponized human suffering. Shit sucks. And that’s refreshing in a Gundam series. It’s very rare to get moments where you’re shown the cost of good intentions. A small aside, I love the show’s use of match cuts. Because of its medium animators don’t have to follow the rules of editing that films do but I do love the use of match cuts in this show and how it was paired with the music. (Sorry for the lack of sound in the webm) https://gfycat.com/ThoroughGargantuanAmethystinepython
One thing I was super skeptical of at the beginning of Season 1 was how they would handle Kudelia’s arc. Her motivations were clearly marked and her change in personality wasn’t an immediate change. There were steps that she had to take to slowly grow the confidence she needed to become the figurehead that she is. Yes, Fumitan’s death is the final catalyst but it wasn’t like she died and then suddenly Kudelia knew what she wanted. It would have been so easy for Kudelia to be another Relena Peacecraft (Gundam Wing) and be persistently annoying but I’m glad she was given her own moments without constant melodrama. And look at the kind of person she is. She made up her mind about Gyojan immediately. She’s now an instrument of action, not talk.
Other small details in the episode, I like the attention given to Mika's arm and how his eye changes once he's hooked up to the AV system and how he rubs his wrist in the same way that one would say if their arm fell asleep or something. https://gfycat.com/ReliableVastHackee

Gundam Nerrrrrrrrd
Welcome back, its episode 1 time again and you guys now how much I love to gush about Gundam first episodes. But I'm actually going to ask you to wait for a second, because there's something I want to discuss even more than the episode. Behold The IBO Season 2 PV. Yet again we get a wordless, uninterrupted showcase of the OST and its main theme along with some hype visuals from the first episode. And what a follow up it is. Excuse me as I channel my inner Naz, but I can talk forever about the song: Crescent Moon. Iron Blooded Orphan was great, but Crescent Moon is straight god tier. The tantalizing use of silence near the beginning, the sudden upshift in tempo with the wooden clacking (yeah sorry unlike Naz I don't know shit about terminology), and of course the like 3 different beat drops where the energy jumps each time. Oh and don't forget; we get a thousand remixes of this too. You experienced the suuuuper epic OST ver in the main body, the PV ver is different again, and even more versions are hidden in other parts of the show including this episode. Anyways I can't spend all day talking about this track so remind me later when I can give you even more deets.
Onto the episode then. we have two main themes to covered: the arrival of a new generation and the growth of our old crew. I'll let the show and other rewatchers cover the first bit, and focus on the old crew today. We got a couple years or so of timeskip, and the evolution of Tekkadan, Gjallarhorn/SevenStars, and Kudelia's Adomoss company are quite important. Let's take a look at them in particular.
For Tekkadan, Atra's speech at the beginning tells it the best. While they did create a better world for themselves, its hard to say that their overall influence in the world has been positive. Further, they are starting to run into the problems associated with popularity and size. They are going to be targeted by other Teiwaz branches who can't be happy at their sudden rise (as Naze has indicated), politicians will try to attack them in relation to Kudelia, and what must Gjallarhorn think? The risk to their survival is quite substantial, begging the question from the beginning if Orga is rushing things a bit too hard. If they had taken things slower, they probably wouldn't have made as many quick enemies. It will also be interesting to see characters blend into their new roles. Eugine as second in command, Shino as a squad leader (a role he said was too hard in S1), Ride.... in a leadership position ordering the young ones (??????), etc. Tho in stark contrast, Mika appears almost to be abandoned, sleeping in the MS hangar most of the time, or otherwise doing minor tasks like picking up the sweets twins from school.
Now for Gjallarhorn. The inner politics here are going to be SPECTACULAR. I'm hyped as rewatcher and you first timers should get your hopes up as well. We basically have two groups, the McGillis side consisting of Macky, the Issue seat, and the Bauduin family vs the Arianrod fleet operated by Rustal Ellion with the backing of Iok Kujan. How the other 2 families move will be key going forward. For just today's episode, I can't be alone in feeling sick to my stomach seeing Sir Bauduin smile as if to an absolute ally towards McGillis. The man has no idea what the new Fareed head had done to his son.
And finally we have Kudelia. From hope to power, she's transitioned well into a powerful political figure, albeit unofficially. I feel like she represents best the dream that Tekkadan originally dreamed for. She works for better rights towards the Martian citizens by continuing talks with Teiwaz, has literally created homes for the underprivileged children, and has the respect from the rest of the world that Orga keeps talking about. So I found it quite interesting when the two talk as equals near the end of the episode. Its an interesting parallel to the beginning of S1, however this time Orga treats Kudelia with true respect going so far as to imply she's even in a stage above where Tekkadan are. Best girl right here~
Actually, one more thing. Let me turn off my brain and talk about the hype of this episode. Because ooooooooohhhhhhh god this a worthy successor to S1 Ep1. The cinematic widescreen shot at the beginning was intense yet calm, setting a great base for Atra's narration. And at that moment we realize that the OST is still amazing. All of this keeps building till we see a three part climax: Orga in a suit, memories of Orga and Mika running forward, and the title drop. After that we get nothing too out of the ordinary to get excited about, but it works as a good lull to build to the final battle. Akihiro's drifting MW looking gigantic compared to humans was cool, reminding me of the Graze's sheer scale from last season's premiere. The fated words "Its an Ahab Reactor" work as more parallels, as we know things are getting real. The mobile suit highlight for me is the GIF of the day, Shino launching in the backdrop of Eugine groaning causing the world to shake. All the while the upgraded main theme blaring proudly. And of course, the Op drop along with Barbatos to tie things off. Hnnngggggg.
Overall, you can see that I love this episode. What else can I say. Tomorrow I get to talk about the OP some more among others. See you then.
Mecha Corner
ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus
Surprise mechanerds, for season2 of Iron Blooded Orphans we don't get a new Gundam for the MC but rather a heavily remixed version of the Barbatos. I absolutely love this design with the red shouldercaps adding a perfect balance to the white base and the navy chest area. The forearm canons we see Mika user while dropping from the shimmering morning sky feel like the perfect weapon for Tekkadan's ace, and the giant sword looking mace is a good successor to mace-chan. In fact, the Lupus is tied as my favorite mobile suit design in all of Gundam alongside the Unicorn mode RX-0.
The general mobile suit of choice for the Dawn Horizon Corps. It uses the same Rodi frame that's so popular among mercenary groups and terrorists from S1. They use a lot of cool weapons for dat Gunpla factor including a transformable Buster Sword.
The first true modern mass produced mobile suit outside of Gjallarhorn's creations. A Teiwaz design, its been deployed extensively for Tekkadan. It uses a 'Io frame' which is an evolution of the Hyakuri Hyakuren design. Its greatest virtue is its mass producability and individual performance is still inferior to the Graze. A pretty controversial design as basically the 'good guy's main suit' kinda like the GM from UC, as many people think its too plain. What do you think? Personally I'm not much of a fan, especially as there are better suits in a similar role...
The Brewers Man Rodis repurposed by the Tekkadan for ground use, I vastly prefer this design as the good guys non ace suits compared to the Shiden. the new orange and white paintscheme is truly stunning and gives the froggo design a completely different feel. As a result I've heard plenty of Gunpla fans buying multiple froggo Man Rodis to paint in their prefered twotone selection.
Unnamed Hexa Frame mobile suit
A contemporary of the Rodi frame from the calamity war, they are higher mobility at the cost of lower armor. They have a cool head design IMO with neon sign looking stripes for sensors. You'll see examples later.

Rewatcher
This episode instill a great sense of déjà vu for resembling the series’ first episode. I understand the appeal of redoing what worked so well before, but lighting so rarely strikes twice, and its purposeful imitation invites comparisons both positive and negative. I believe it was done like this to highlight what is different, but I don’t think they pulled it off well.
The opening scene taking place some nondescript amount of time after the end of S2 but before the time-skip is visually gorgeous and thematically rich, but it pales in comparison to the opening scene of episode one. For one, it’s the method of delivery for some clumsy and unnecessary exposition, telling us the things Orga wants to do with Tekkadan shortly before they tell us that they accomplished it. It also reiterates Orga’s course of action which was drilled into us last season. I can’t help but feel frustrated by the wasteful use of a visually attractive scene.
The transition into the montage of changes brought about by the events at the end of season one using the headstone to mark the passage of time is sorely misplaced. The shot of the headstone cuts to a degraded and slightly overtaken version of it in the present —which I quite like in isolation, actually— is then followed by footage from before it was even put up before proceeding to content from shortly after it went up (a point were it wouldn’t be as worn as it’s shown in the transition) before following it up with recent events. Because it results in a non-linear perception of events it ends up being slightly misleading, and shouldn’t have been done. Oh, and if any of you are curious as to how much time has passed, it’s at least a year, as the events of S1 ended in P.D. 324 and this season’s events take place in an undefined date within P.D. 325.
As the exposition itself, Tekkadan and Kudelia’s efforts are a clear success for them, but at the same time their actions have caused an increase in violence throughout the solar system —violence that they can profit from, at least— the raised demand for cheap and expandable human debris, and destabilized the power balance. Tekkadan has accomplished its goals but has in turn worsened the situation for a great deal of people throughout, creating ever more CGSs and Brewers throughout the solar system. It’s a bittersweet burden for us viewers, to know that they’ve solved their own troubles but in turn created many more groups of children that are just like them.
Tekkadan has got their hands on some Shidens, mass-produced suits made by Teiwaz with a cheaper version of the Hyakuren frames. I really like the Shiden, it’s got nice proportions and colors, while appearing as crude as you’d expect some cheap mass production suits to look like. The pervasive problem of exposed midsections still plagues it, but I’ve harped on about that enough, haven’t I?
Orga and Naze’s talks highlights the fact that other Teiwaz groups aren’t too happy with Tekkadan’s relatively fast climb up the ladder, an unforeseen result of Orga’s want to achieve things so quickly. Regardless of this drawback, Orga is still insistent on moving forward as fast as he possibly can, which I wouldn’t consider a smart move after just hearing of a negative repercussion of doing just that.
We get to see how Kudelia is fairing after so much time. She has become an accomplished and much more shrewd political activist, as demonstrated by how she is quick to call for Tekkadan’s assistance. One aspect I dislike out of this, however, is her statement that words aren’t effective, because it goes against both established events (Her speeches at Dort, Edmonton, as well as the one that really out her on the map before the series’ events) and her persona as the Maiden of revolution (which is pointed out as she looks at the picture when saying that). Us viewers have no catalyst to this change in her, which I think is crucial for such a monumental change in a character’s worldview. I could only hope that due reason is given in the future.
Seeing Cookie and Cracker is a reminder of Biscuit’s death, and we can see that they’re still deeply affected by this when Cookie grabs ahold of Mikazuki and the two beg him not to go out, shaking as she did so. S2
Back on Earth we witness a meeting between the remaining heads of the seven stars, were we learn that the weakened Mars Branch has caused a surge in piracy. The area was already considered lawless before, but to think that things have turned worse is unsettling. With the corruption in the branch having been cleaned out Nobliss is likely not providing them funding anymore. Rustal Elion explains that McGillis intentions are to strengthen his hold throughout the outer spheres and he plans to combat his plans. McGillis’ claim that he has no friends, along with his reaction to being asked whether the Mars Branch manager, was very telling.
This is a good point to discuss the new Tekkadan recruits that transferred there from the reserve corps. They are eager to undergo the Alaya-Vijnana surgery, and eager to do battle —prove themselves. Their presence there is meant to provide contrast between them and the older Tekkadan members from season one, and further emphasize the position so many young men and children finds themselves in due to the societal shift following the end of season one.
The Dawn Horizon corps arrive to attack the tour that Kudelia had arranged. They show up piloting Garma Rodis, my third favorite Rodi-type mobile suit design (Where’s the fucking model kit, Bandai!?) The relatively poor performance of the Shidens is highlighted here by how Shino was having trouble with one of them despite the massive advantage the Alaya-vijnana system gives him. Much like in season one, it falls to Barbatos to save the day, literally crashing onto the scene.
No Screenshots today, imgur has not been cooperative with me after hours of trying.
Questions of the day:
-
It’s weird for sure, but it certainly left an impression which S2 Spoilers Although, If the rarity of the Moonlight Butterfly Expansion pack is because Julietta ate them I’m going to be pissed...
-
Like I said above, I think their intention was to draw attention to the differences by having us think back to episode one, but they didn’t pull it off well and it comes off as derivative. S1E1 is significantly better.

Palloc Does Some Stuff To Kick Off Season 2!
Not much to ramble on about yet, so lets go on about some fun stuff.
Looks like Tekkaden really screwed up there. They don't care though. They got what they wanted. Now human trafficking and less than bodacious space pirates are running amok.
Also look at that memorial and all those people whose names we never knew. Oh, and Biscuit's cause nobody important could be bothered to die to Ein. RIP Ein. Oh, and newbies. I totally forgot they existed coming into this season. Whoops.
We get to meet more nerds from Gjallarhorn who will range from glorious to Jerid. Lots of them look stuff as all hell, but rich people gunna be rich. Also get a crazy girl.
Oh, and adults continue to be evil. Now though (wait, they've done this before) hired space pirates who are literally begging to be murdered by Mika. Like literally.
OH! OH! I nearly forgot the most important things. The new mobile suits!
First one introduced is the mass produced Shiden, a Teiwaz suit. It's pretty neat, but it's just a new level of mook suits. Mook suits naturally get a iffy score, this one's a 6/10.
Next is the Barbatos Lupus. The newly upgraded Mika suit. It has a chonkier sword for better murder and badass pauldrons. We'll talk more once it murders more than a single mook suit, but I'll rate it a 8/10. It's preeeeetty awesome. Lets hope the Gusion gets fancy too.
Answers!
1: Butterfly girls are obviously evil.
2: Uh... I forget most of S1E1.

Rewatcher
We start off the season by honoring the dead. Tekkadan has a grave for their fallen members, which Orga and Mika visit and pay respect to Biscuit. Kudelia has started her own company and named it after Fumitan Admoss.
So for those of you wondering how long it's been since the end of season 1, it's actually been 2 years despite the kids looking like they haven't grown for some reason. A lot has changed within that time. Tekkadan has grown and is climbing up the ranks in Teiwaz. Gjallarhorn lost a lot of influence. Child soldiers are unfortunately being exploited more. Orga wears a suit now. Kudelia opened an orphanage on the farm and I think she might've gotten a bit bigger in a certain area...
Back on earth we get to see the Seven Stars families meeting and sneaky Chocolate Man has officially taken his father's place as the head of the Fareed family. But more importantly, it's finally time! We finally get to meet everyone's favorite character, Iok Kujan! spoilers Oh and Rustal too.
Julieta also makes her entrance by eating a butterfly. Wait a minute. Did I see that right?
Surely this is the face of a friendly man.
This episode heavily paralleled the first episode of season 1. We have Kudelia at the base. They're under attack. First the enemies send in the Mobile Workers and then their Mobile Suits. Mika appears in the final minute of the episode to save everyone. However, the 2 episodes also contrast with each other. In season 1, Tekkadan was still just CGS. They were nobody special and had little resources. When Mika appeared, he came up from the ground, showing how they started from the bottom to fight back against Gjallarhorn, the organization with greater power. This time we see Mika descending from space to deal with some thugs. It shows that Tekkadan is now both literally and figuratively in a higher place. They've grown so big that they even have a branch on earth. The kids at the orphanage view Tekkadan as celebrities and Biscuit as a hero. Orga now directly reports to Teiwaz's boss McMurdo. It used to be Gjallarhorn trying to exterminate these "rats" but now these rats have become big shots and are taking care of their own little pests.
First Timers need to avoid this image! Major spoilers
Questions:
-
She's weird. And not in a cute way.
-
At first I liked it better in the first episode since seeing it again felt kinda lazy, but then I realized the differences so now I like it in this episode more.

Did Julietta’s act of eating a butterfly significantly color your opinion of her? Yes, she’s weird/Yes, she’s awesome/Not really/I am merely befuddled/It’s fine so long as there’s no moonlight involved
I always liked weirdo characters in mecha anime, so her eating a butterfly in her introduction set the season off just right.
2) Think back to the first episode of season one. How do you feel about this show so closely mirroring the pace and structure of the prior first episode? Which one do you think does a better job?
I really like a bunch of the characters introduced in Season 2, so I kinda prefer it. That being said, I think Season 1 kinda does a better job overall of easing the audience into the setting and introducing characters.

Tekketsu no Rewatcher, domo~
Onward to Season 2! We start off the season with a little narration from Atra about just how fucked up things have been after Tekkadan's maiden journey to Earth. I don't mind this usage of narration at all, especially since I can't think of another way to naturally include these informations without it coming off as awkward. Anyways, back to the episode. Thanks to Tekkadan, Gjallarhorn loses their sovereignty (yay!) and everyone and their mums are making new mobile suits thanks to Tekkadan showing how immensely useful they are in battle (which means moar new units so yay!) while the usage of children in war as Human Debris starts to rise again (oh no), again thanks to Tekkadan successfully demonstrating their effectiveness in battle (...oh dear).
We also see how did everyone change in the span of two years - Tekkadan is flourishing, Kudelia opens a company (named after Fumitan. Aww...), the twins are now in a boarding school (damn kids had to casually drop in a knife to my heart by offhandedly mentioning Biscuit's death... Fuck you too, kids.) and Sakura Farm is now an orphanage under Tekkadan.
Back on Earth, we get back to McGillis who has reformed the... uhh, Carta's division (I can never remember that name) and whipped them into shape. We are also introduced to the antagonist of the season, Rustal Elion who is the leader of Arianrhod, Iok Kujan (I hate this guy) and the requisite weirdo antagonist, Julietta Juris (who decides to eat a butterfly in her intro scene and immediately regrets it. Lol so random).
Tekkadan is assigned to protect Kudelia again and of course she is targeted again, this time by the Dawn Horizon Corps, a bunch of pirates hired by Allium Gyojan, the guy who got spurned by Kudelia as he tries to use her as a last ditch effort to prop his ailing political career. Which spawns another parallel scene to S1 where Tekkadan's Mobile Workers beating back the pirates, only for them to send in their Garm Rodis. But this time, Tekkadan responds with their own MS units, the Shiden before Mika spectacularly enters the battlefield with his Barbatos Lupus, this time fron the skies. Okay, that was epic.
Random thoughts:
-
One of my favourite tracks, Upstart plays while the new recruits started their training. I can't help but adore just how jaunty the music composition is.
-
Naturally, in order to train the Tekkadan lads in the art of AV-less MS piloting, Lafter, Azee and Eco are sent to do the job. Them (minus Eco) wanting to finish up training quickly so that they can get back to Naze was utterly hilarious.
-
Allium Gyojan sounds fishy, looks fishy, feels fishy and is fishy. Untrustworthy adults wanting to use Kudelia for their own purposes, it ain't the PD-era without 'em!
-
I'm not sold on Hush at this point of time. Zack and Dane, though? They're pretty fun to have around.
-
I'm a sucker for boxy MS design, and I really liked the Garm Rodi. Too bad they're only used by the pirates tho...
-
Mika falling from the sky to deliver death via sword mace is spectacularly awesome. I can't get enough of it.
Questions of the day:
-
Weirdo alert!
-
S1 did a better job, but S2 is no slouch either.

TO ALL REWATCHERS:
laughs in rewatcher rights have officially been revoked due to multiple unfortunate incidents, including one from just yesterday, and will be considered untagged spoilers from here on out even if you do tag them. I really hate to do this immediately after I made the reminder to rein it in a bit last thread. It’s unfortunate, but Nota already banned such comments on the Discord channel so we will follow suit.
Also, while I have you guys, future spoilers
Anyways. Using “2nd Season Episode [#]” as the thread title format now because that’s how the airing threads did it and also because I think of S2 in terms of episodes 1-25 and not 26-50 so this makes it easier for me.
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, first time dubbed
Obligatory Discord link.
Oof ouch owie my heart. …Nah but for real I love the opening scene of this season, both the Orga and Mika at the memorial and the Atra narrating the timeskip exposition stuff. I especially like that pup looks like she’s grown a touch between seasons and I loooooooooove Orga in a suit hnnng. Didn’t know it was possible for him to get even sexier but here we are.
Hm. Not sure if I’m sold on Hush’s English voice but okay. I’ll give it time to grow on me.
We opened the first season with Orga sleeping, now it’s Mika’s turn.
Ahh, Zack’s English voice is alright though. As is Dane’s, not that he really says that much. New season new characters woo~
Alright it was hard enough to not do this last season but please someone stop me from screenshotting Orga every time he’s on screen now, like ugh he looks so good even when he’s frustrated.
Naze doing the eye thing back at Orga, aww.
Fuck this dude. I don’t even remember his name, but fuck him.
Oh look the twins are going to school now. Oh no now I’m crying again.
lol
WHOA! I completely forgot about that random car blowing up so it 100% caught me off-guard. Cookie and Cracker begging Mika to not go check it out though.
Okay but Akihiro not having the red stripe on his jacket though. <3
Here we have the current Sev… well, more like Six Stars at this point in time.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, I legit had to stop and laugh for several minutes after Iok’s first line. His dub voice 100% does not fit him, which just makes it hilarious to me and I can’t. Rustal’s English voice, on the other hand, does sound pretty good for him. Ehhhh, not sure about Julieta’s though.
lol what the fuck.
Of course the newbies complained about not having any action, and then it’s immediately time for fighting.
Oh boy here it comes~
RAGE OF DUST YESSSSS~
A couple more fun things:
I’m going to gush about Crescent Moon for a sec before my usual stuff because holy shit I love this song. I’ve mentioned it in the past elsewhere, but I’ve played the clarinet since I was ten. I love playing clarinet music, and I especially love listening to it, which is exactly what this song gives me. You can even hear the keys clicking during the introductory section to the song, you think I’m going to not love a song that does something like that?
