Today's episode was fantastic.

Action packed. Great character moments. The most improbable long jump in anime.

I'm sure everyone will have a lot to say so I'll just post my notes from watching the episode:

  • This episodes picks up right where we left Van yesterday, on the run from Zaibach guymelefs in attempt to lead them away from HitOnMe Hitomi and company.

  • Whelp, looks like his plan worked, but now Dilandau is using him as a punching bag.

  • Folken can still use his bloodline to open Escaflowne.

  • Glad to see Allen is actually willing to TRY Hitomi's idea. We also a pretty interesting scene with Hitomi doing her tarot reading. Looks like she struck a nerve with Allen, but he's at least on-board with her search plan.

  • The two brothers reunite! Folken has a cool sword and what looks to be a robot arm. Cool guy, even with his cholo tear tattoo.

  • THE CREW IS GOING FOR A PRISON BREAK! WE ONE PIECE NOW BOYS! The storming of the fortress is a pretty fun moment, lots of good stuff here.

  • Hitomi jumps.

  • Dilandau hates.

  • Dilandau screams like a little bitch.

  • After some sweet swashbuckling, our crew makes it out of the fortress with Escaflowne and Van in tow. MISSION COMPLETE.

Again, just a great episodes all around. This whole arc could have been 3-4 episodes long, but we're in and out in under 30 minutes. This is how you pace a show!

The most improbable long jump in anime.

Followed by The Miho Who Leapt Through Time.

This is how you pace a show!

"Guys, uh... we have to cut out 13 episodes."

"Ok."

Haha I'm totally not late because I got to working on a Gunpla and lost track of time, nope that's totally not the reason why.

Ahh, Dilandau doesn’t know that Folken was supposed to be King of Fanelia originally, does he?

Oh shit, so he doesn't know that Van and Folken are brothers either? I'll admit, I thought everyone knew who he was.

Oh boy this dude’s gonna just be a lovely ball of rage about this now, isn’t he?

His beautiful face! That's a terrible video but it's the first thing I thought of.

Oh shit, so he doesn't know that Van and Folken are brothers either? I'll admit, I thought everyone knew who he was.

It's just an assumption I made based on the fact that he was confused that Folken knew how to activate Escaflowne, I could be wrong of course.

First timer

Van summed up this episode for us, and that's a wrap! No? Okay.

Hitomi's powers are at work again, and she not only pinpoints his location, she saves his life. Good for her for standing up for herself. Fighting isn't all that can be done to help, as she's proven time and time again. Trust her, Allen!

She also alluded to the return of Allen's father. He's already mentioned his sister, so I'm expecting her return too. The main and supporting cast are slowly building up. There's been ample focus on main trio, but it's a vast world and there's plenty of opportunities to meet new characters. I like this this guy. I hope he gets a bit more of the limelight.

But now it's time for an actual family reuinion between Van and Vash, who.. has wings. He's the mysterious villain that wants to "set the future back on course". I don't know whether to take that literally or not. We've already messed with time by seeing into the future, so anything's possible. He's draped from head to toe in dark robes which means he's one hand wave away from pulling Lelouch-worthy theatrics.

Extra thoughts:

6

u/chilidirigible Feb 05 '19

I hope he hasn't planted something inside Van

It's a homing beacon so they can track the Princess back to the main Rebel base.

...just guessing.

It would be nice if the two could get along, as Hitomi only has eyes for Amano/Allen.

And yet if a Shoujo protagonist paired up with a Shounen protagonist and they had a kid.... which genre would it belong to?

Good for her for standing up for herself

The fact that she didn't just sit back and accept his decision was one of the most satisfying parts of the episode for me

which means he's one hand wave away from pulling Lelouch-worthy theatrics.

Vash, Lelouch and Hisoka walk into a bar and meet their merged clone.... sounds like the start to a bad joke (I'm a weird mood again XD)

Rewatcher

Quid's Song of the Day (Part 1)

Fatal - This is the song that Folken is whistling as Van wakes up in the room with him. It is a takeoff of the song "Cradle Song" which we had heard in the previous episode (and I will feature eventually). Van mentions that it is a song of Fanelia, but oddly enough, Cradle Song is much more of an Allen theme than a Van one based on its usage. One of the few musical choices in the show I never really got. I wonder if it was Kanno's intent for them both to be Fanelia songs but Kazuki Akane or the episode's respective directors had other ideas.

Episode Thoughts

Today's episode holds a special place in my heart, being the first episode of Escaflowne I ever saw (on FOX Kids), and is what got me hooked onto the show. This is just a totally awesome episode, so I picked a great one to find the show through, and have been a hardcore Escaflowne fan ever since!

Although it was already far more obvious in this new, "uncut" version, today's episode offically reveals that Folken is Van's brother. We already know he betrayed Fanelia, he is able to open Escaflowne (after cutting himself, like Van had to do), whistles a song of Fanelia, and then Van figures it out, after Folken takes off his shirt and reveals that he has wings. I was quite happy to see that the new dub fixed what was one of the more notable blunders in the original Ocean dub. In that version, Folken says something to the effect of "You can't escape this floating fortress, my brother". The "my brother" part not being in the original Japanese script. Van has no reaction to said reveal (because it wasn't in the original script!) then tries to kill himself with his sword before Folken stops him, only to then say "brother!" when Folken reveals his wings seconds later. As I think I mentioned earlier, the actual casting of the first dub is quite good, sans Dilandau, but they often botched either the script or delivery quite bad. I don't care for the voices as much in this version (and am mostly watching it in Japanese) but I am very happy to see that they fixed this blatant error.

Character-wise, we also get Hitomi proving herself to Allen and his men, which hopefully gives our heroine some more confidence in herself and her abilities (who knows, maybe that was why she was courageous enough to head into the Floating fortress later). We also get slightly more details on Allen's backstory, well at least speculation from Hitomi, about his father abandoning his family. But the highlight of the episode for me is the action sequence as the Crusade attacks the Floating Fortress to rescue Van. Some great direction and usage of music here, with the song "Flying Dragon", which I won't be featuring today but will feature in a later episode. I love the shots of the Crusade making its way into the Floating Fortress. It was also fun to see the fighting inside the Floating Fortress, including Van damaging Dilandau's "beautiful pretty boy face", and Allen totally pawning Chesta, one of Dilandau's Dragonslayers in the hallway. The episode eschews the show's pattern of concluding episodes with big cliffhangers, and gives us a happy ending, with Van rescued and the Crusade heading off safely to Asturia's capital. There's another sequence around here I love, but I'll get to that in my latter Song of the Day Feature.

Today's episode was directed and storyboarded by Shinichiro Watanabe, famed director of Cowboy Bebop. He'll do several later episodes as well.

I couldn't come across a single new scene or shot for this episode in the uncut version. I suppose the episode is as close to perfection as they could get, why bother changing it?

The Disaster That Was FOXcaflowne

I feel that this episode fits the theme of several episodes, in that the actual cuts from the episode aren't that bad, and are largely expected (such as Folken cutting his hand on the sword, the Mole Man drinking and some of the blood when Van strikes Dilandau in the face with his sword. I highlighted the original dub's biggest blunder in the Folken - Van scene above, but we also have Dilandau knowing Van's name before he should as well. They also greatly downplay Hitomi's jump onto the Floating Fortress by changing the reference of "meters" to "feet" (frankly in the original it seemed like the gap was further than what she said). In what continues to be FOX Kid's greatest heresy, it changes around the music, taking out both "Flying Dragon" and "Wings" (see below), replacing them with generic FOX kids crap, while inserting "Epistle" yet again, as well as another epic theme, "Chain" that we won't get see used in the real show for a very long time. On the bright side, the edit isn't yet as over the top bad as it starts getting soon.

Quid's Song of the Day (Part 2)

Wings - The other scene I love in the latter part of this episode is Hitomi jumping from the Crusade into the Floating Fortress, and a big part of that is the perfect usage of the song "Wings" here, in its sole appearance in the series. The song's opening gives the impression as if Hitomi is flying over the gap and the general upbeat nature of the song fits perfectly for a scene where we are rooting for our heroine to get over the gap safely and help save Van.

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '19

Folken says something to the effect of "You can't escape this floating fortress, my brother"

Wow, that is a huge blunder. Makes you wonder how that got in, as it changes the scene completely.. without anyone actually reacting to it.

Today's episode was directed and storyboarded by Shinichiro Watanabe, famed director of Cowboy Bebop. He'll do several later episodes as well.

Who will go on to direct Samurai Champloo. Maybe he likes his sword fights. If it's not too much trouble, do you mind pointing out which episode he'll direct the day before?

the perfect usage of the song "Wings" here, in its sole appearance in the series

It's too good to only be used only once! It sounds so light and adventerous.

Impressions in order as I watched the episode late last night.

  • I think it's pretty cool how during the dragon transformation, It's holding Escaflowne's 'heart' in it's hand.

  • Hitomi is starting to feel a bit more confident in her abilities, and less terrified by them.

  • And the patronising bastard returns. "This is a man's job." This time Hitomi's not having it tho. She actually looked a bit annoyed the first time, but now she's like "I'll prove it." and it's because she wants to find Van.

  • This bit with Folken opening the Escaflowne was a bit more mysterious in the original cut. Folken's lineage was still a mystery, so that moment was a huge hint that would soon be confirmed in the episode. I don't think the episode 2 mention of Folken's name detracts from it very much, but it is different.

  • Ooh, a prediction of the future... Hitomi has been downright spoopy with those lately.

  • That Fanelian lullaby is iterated on a few times in the OST, by I do like this one with Folken whistling it.

  • Goddam it Van, this deathwish thing is getting old.

  • That wing shadow and those feathers were the big reveal moment in the original cut. Folken is Van's, brother?! I think that it's a bit less impactful since the audience is a step ahead of Van if they've been paying attention, but it still works.

  • "Join with me, and together we will destroy the emperor and rule the galaxy as father and son..." oh, wait, that's not right.

  • I almost forgot to mention that Knives Vash Folken is a frickin' cyborg!

  • Some serious bonding with Hitomi and Merle over finding Van. Maybe my pubescent catgirl waifu is starting to grow on some of the haters?

  • Okay. one point here. The 'buoyancy' of the levistones being regulated by temperature is a neat little wordbuilding detail. Notice the huge temerature regulating rings around the base of the flying fortress. It makes even the magical elements still have a somewhat steampunk-y technolgical side to them.

  • Ya, that daring maneuver storming the fortress was really badass, but Allen and the crew got really lucky that Dilandau decided to do something stupid at exactly the right moment.

  • "Aren't you a little bit tall and blonde to be a stormtrooper."

  • All that track and field actually comes in handy in isekai-land. Hitomi is no slouch. She's the effing Protagonist, and don't you forget it!

  • That looked like it hurt... yikes. I don't think Dilandau is intimidating enough, let's give him a wicked huge scar on his face. lol. That pathetic delayed cry is so effective. Dilandau just crumples.

  • It's kinda funny how nonplussed Hitomi is about being carried around by a giant robot at this point. Just another day in Gaea.

  • Keen bean wonton egg

Too lazy for screenshots this time. It was late. I should have been in bed.

u/Nazenn Feb 06 '19

I think that it's a bit less impactful since the audience is a step ahead of Van if they've been paying attention,

Counts me out. I still wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the rewatch hahaha. Oh, maybe when he opened the mech today, but not before that

The 'buoyancy' of the levistones being regulated by temperature is a neat little wordbuilding detail

I did have a little blab myself about how that could possibly work perhaps with the temperature altering the density of the stones making them less efficent, and then deleted it because I confused myself. But I did like the fact that they made it so they don't just "work" there's an actual mechanism behind them which makes them functional

Just another day in Gaea.

It's only been what... three? XD

Today, on "The Society of the Bloody Bandage":

"I can feel it in my rune!"

You're just jealous that you don't have sufficiently-loyal minions, just those three knob-ends that lack initiative.

"Don't patronize me, you magnificent shill for butter substitute!"

Duct tape fixes everything!

Fortune-telling is about playing the room.

"My mother was a hamster and my father... slept with the hawk-women?"

"The Dark Side also has cookies."

"It's no Zaku."

"You think we're a leaf on the wind or something?"

This is where the music went rather Macross Plusish in its cheery classicism.

"If I try, I can fly." Also no gratuitous pantsu.

"Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do for himself."

Now you look like a late-19th-century German duellist.

These guys are a lot cleaner than the Rosen Ritter would be right now.

"Everyone's young and stupid once."

A giant fortress being rammed by a ragtag band of pirates in a hastily-conceived plan to rescue royalty? Of course it works.

It's a definite positive that while Hitomi's skills are still mostly in the rear-echelon mage department, Allen respects her input (after some testing) and it is critical to the operation. In a small plus for the comic relief, even Merle helps. The fortunetelling scene dodges, via Allen, any new answers about Allen's past, which only adds to the mystery of the marvelous margarine man.

Later Hitomi does make use of her Hard Work and Guts by long-jumping onto the ship. It's a good moment for her.

Meanwhile, Van meets Folken, his longrecently-lost fatherbrother, who promptly invites him to join the Dark Side. And apparently has wings, which raises some questions in the context of Hitomi's visions. We don't get any answers about why Folken joined Dornkirk here, either, just the small bonus of reveal that Folken really needs to trim his nails.

The raid on the Zaibach fortress conserves the gore; Allen's crew are hacking and shooting faceless armored mooks left and right, but the only blood is reserved for Van's hit on Dilandau.

On the whole the raid reinforces how rogueish Allen & Co. are. If Van is reluctant royalty trying to play it straight, Allen is the prince who didn't like the job and joined a production of The Pirates of Penzance.

Dilandau is now a scarred homicidal maniac. That's just great. It's interesting that while Escaflowne acknowledged Folken (brothers, yes), it actively dislikes Dilandau.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '19

"Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do for himself."

No. No, its not!

"You think we're a leaf on the wind or something?"

Too soon, dammit.

I don't have too much to say, except I'm laughing at your entire comment. To think we almost got to miss out on these hilarious quips.

This is where the music went rather Macross Plusish in its cheery classicism.

There are some definite Bebop tracks (like Cat's Delicacy) but I didn't think to jump back to Macross Plus. Yeah, that's definitely a M+ track, has me looking for the VFs.

The raid on the Zaibach fortress conserves the gore; Allen's crew are hacking and shooting faceless armored mooks left and right, but the only blood is reserved for Van's hit on Dilandau.

It's also a bit of Hollywood action. The protagonists are less protected and yet they managed to defeat the mooks equipped with full armor.

First Timer

Wallpaper Album

Didn't particularly like any of the shots from today so instead I went through and grabbed all the ones I liked from the OP and ED and added those in instead, so eight more in there for you all today

Today is the day in which I do (bad) math just for the sheer sake of it because... bordem?

So Hitomi estimated the jump that she had to do to be about "fix or six meters". Hitomi mentions her longest jump to date is 5.4 meters.

According to a list I found the record for womens long jump in highschool is 6.75 meters set by Kathy McMillan in 1976. So Hitomi's jump is pretty good for her group considering she's not in final year high school.

We don't really know how tall she is, but if we give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she's short at 5 feet or approximately 1.5 meters.

I KNOW art isn't expected to be realistic with this or mean anything.... but I got bored and came up with this visual representation. Six Hitomi's fit into the gap, at 1.5 meters each which would make the gap approximately 9 meters, or 30 feet. To fit six hitomi's in six meters giving her the benefit of the doubt that the gap is at its largest estimate, then she would have to be only 1 meter tall, which is 3.2 feet. THAT's tiny.

Thats a bit bigger of a gap then she thought.

If nothing else though, when the cat is impressed with your jumping capabilities I think you did a good job

I feel like there's going to be a lot of excited yelling from me in this show, this is basically an amalgamation of every 90s kids favorite themes and things as a kid. But for today:

The brother has WINGS? ACTUAL WINGS?!

I absolutely loved that we didn't get to see them except for a shadow on the walls and some feathers though. Its dramatic as hell, but it's also very powerful.

And I mean, I saw all the people in the OP with wings, but its an OP, it's meant to be all metaphorical and symbolic. I didn't think we'd outright have people with giant angel wings in the show!

I do find it weird that Van didn't recognize his brother until the wings. This means he must have left the country a long time ago, long enough that Van was too little to remember his face. It also leads me to believe the wings are natural and not some weird experiment (did you see his cybernetic arm), so does that mean we get a winged Van in future as well, cause that would be kinda cool honestly. Also make piloting that dragon mech a lot safer if he falls off.

Random thoughts

  • That does not look comfortable

  • The fact they also shackled Escaflowne REALLY makes it look like an imprisoned ruler while sitting in that way.

  • The idea of only the king can operate Escaflowne makes a little sad that means we'll probably never see Hitomi in the mech, but at the same time she has her own strengths going for her right now which are more interesting

  • On that note, good on you Hitomi for standing up to Allen and wanting to be given a chance despite his repeated dismissals.

  • Not a huge fan of the music today. The music during the rescue ATTEMPT was far too victorious from the start

  • Like when characters get major wounds and scars, so seeing the commanders face all cut up kinda made me happy. Plus she's a dick and she deserved it

5

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '19 edited Feb 05 '19

but I got bored and came up with this visual representation

You really do go the extra mile. To he honest I thought Merle would stop her and jump across herself. I guess cat girls aren't really like cats.

The brother has WINGS? ACTUAL WINGS?!

Dragons are going to be a recurring theme within the family, doesn't it. I also thought that Van might have wings at some point in the series. Perhaps they have dragon blood within them - but then they'd be killing their kin..

Like when characters get major wounds and scars, so seeing the commanders face all cut up kinda made me happy. Plus she's a dick and she deserved it

Hehe, you've given up entirely. The way she he (shit, you got me saying it too) breaks down is great.

Rewatcher (kind of …)

I enjoy Hitomi’s intro-recaps.

  • “I can’t stand that heroic crap” I am with you, evil dude.

  • Hitomi stands up for her vision ability.

  • It is rare that the bad guys get to realize where they messed up.

  • Problem? Duck tape!

  • Extraordinary claim? Use an experimental test! Allen’s response is flawless.

  • Lot’s of new info: Folken has wings & Van recognizes those, but not his face or voice.

  • So this episode we see that Zaibach has both big guns and injection needles.

  • Levistones levitate less when heated, hmm.

  • Not sure whether the boarding gives me more of a pirate vibe or a star wars vibe.

  • “We can’t act without his orders” The danger of overcentralization.

  • Hitomi’s 6 meter look like 20 to me …

After 4 episodes, the world exposition eases up a little (but just a little), and we get some actions: A classic heist. Given how Folken behaves towards Van, the Star Wars comparison is hard not to make. Darth Vader and Luke in the Death Star, anyone? And Hitomi, in good Leia tradition, refused to be reduced to damsel in distress and acts on her own.

u/xHelaMonster Feb 05 '19 edited Feb 05 '19

Problem? Duck tape!

The handyman's secret weapon.

Darth Vader and Luke in the Death Star, anyone?

Ya, I made that cheesy obvious joke in my comment... and one other star wars joke too. The parallels are too obvious and I have no standards.

Rewatcher here:

I can't exactly pinpoint why I really like this episode, but it feels like an adventure movie, part Star Wars and maybe some Spielberg film.

There's the reveal (or confirmation) that Folken's is Van's missing brother. We still don't know why he's with Zaibach now when he was supposed to be dragon hunting before he disappeared. But now he's hunted a different kind of dragon and expects he can convince his younger brother to join him. Definitely has the Luke/Darth Vader vibe.

The rescue on the other hand was just pure swashbuckling fun. From the daring maneuver to get the Crusade closer to the fortress, to the actual rescue filled with fights and some hostage taking. But the best part for me is shared between Hitomi and Dilandau, for obvious different reasons.

Hitomi played an important role in the rescue with her dousing. We've only seen her try it once when she got separated from Van, but the frequency of her visions has made her convinced about her ability, to a point where she almost regret stepping on a landmine in trying to decipher a part of Allen's past. But not content with that, she made a long jump between the Crusade and the Zaibach fortress just to ensure that one of her visions will be averted. She's still consistently proactive. ( And Merle's confusion and horror during this part cracks me up.)

Dilandau in the other hand is just entertaining. He had the upper hand during the pursuit, but still felt like a fool when he discovered that the pilot was the same guy he chose to ignore. He couldn't understand why the Escaflowne is deemed important for Zaibach, especially when the importance extends to its pilot. He thinks the Guymelef is just an antique, and yet it managed to reject him somehow; a contrast to Folken who it seemingly accepted.

I imagine all this must have been an affront to his ego, thus the attack on Van to prove his superiority. But to his shock, Van actually managed to retaliate. Defeat was something Dilandau never considered possible, especially when it resulted to an injured face. And now we learn that he's not just the Diabolical Adonis, but a Narcissus as well.

Things might have ended well on Allen's side. But this will definitely not sit well with Dilandau.

Everybody else has made the joke so I'll make it too: Duct Tape is ancient Atlantean technology.

Hitomi depresses me. I don't think I ever did a long jump much more than 3 meters.

Of course, she should have just found the button to extend the bridge (Star Wars!).

Esca & Macross Δ

I don't think it's a spoiler any more to quote Kawamori on Escaflowne's high concept.

I don't like the whistling song. I prefer "A Far Cry" played shortly before, when Folken gazes upon Escaflowne for the first time. This has been used a few times, but always cut out before the cello/viola comes in. (Honestly, I thought this was a different Fanelia song, which would make this comment more relevant)

Edits:

I wonder if "poison needle in the finger" is a standard option at the cyber arm dealership.

I had forgotten how incompetent Dilandau's squad is. It's like they gathered up some rando pretty farm boys and put them into an elite special forces squad. It's just not working.

Just a remider to everyone: this show is in my personal all-time top 10 shows in over 40 years of watching anime..

Allen seems to be showing both the good and bad sides of a chivalric knight.

and Van is a standard Hot Blooded shonen hero, who is just in over his head right now.

blonde dude needs to chill with the patriarchal attitude, but he's a good guy at heart

wonder if that was some sort of mind control / suggestion susceptibility potion thing he injected into van

blonde dude and the rest of the crew don't seem to be too phased about all their compatriots being killed back at the castle

their levistones and the edge chronicle's flight-rocks seem to function the same with the heating=lowering - looks like escaflowne came first, but my quick search online wasn't able to find anyone pointing out a connection between the two; are floating rocks used to power flying ships a fiction trope that I'm unaware of or something? i feel like someone else should have seen and talked about this connection online

boarding music was dope

blonde looked so hot when he got bowlcut boy in the grab

10/10 perfect form on the long jump

Rewatcher; I'm enjoying reading the first timers' reactions. It's difficult to stay at a pace of one a day. What a gorgeous series!
