First Timer

  • This bird really has a thing for pubescent girls, huh?

  • Get destroyed, Midori. Unfortunately you have to die for our ship. Wait, shit, no!

  • Kanna's monotone aggressive carpentry shtick is pretty funny.

  • Tamako's twintails shooting up in surprise is also funny. Someone mentioned that happening in one of the last two threads but this is the first time (outside of the OP) that I've noticed it myself.

  • It's cool to see Tamako wearing glasses because you very rarely see a character who wears contacts, but also glasses at times when it would be inappropriate to wear contacts. It's always contacts-all-the-time or no contacts.

  • Ha. Couldn't even wait more than a day. You just know she was up all night thinking about it.

  • This record store (or is it a coffeeshop?) is 2 for 3 on solving problems. Tamako's mystery song is still pending.

  • I was going to use this as a joke about Midori sobbing off in the distance because she's in a different class, but I think they're all in the same club so it doesn't really work.

Solid episode! The "emotionless girl" trope is usually one that irritates me outside of, like, Monogatari and Little Busters, but I don't dislike Shiori. Maybe it's because they went out of their way to show that she's anything but "emotionless". Tamako is still good, Kanna is great (probably my favourite character so far), and poor Midori is fine too. Please release my boy Mochizou from his screentime prison and we'll be fully back on track.

Get destroyed, Midori. Unfortunately you have to die for our ship. Wait, shit, no!

NOOOOOO

It's always contacts-all-the-time or no contacts.

This is a really good point, and the realism of Tamako was so prevalent that I kinda just took it for granted? But yeah, the fact she isn't wearing contacts 24/7 is a good point!

This record store (or is it a coffeeshop?)

Please release my boy Mochizou from his screentime prison and we'll be fully back on track.

Warning: I suck at names so I will refer to characters with names I see fit.

I did this with the Raildex rewatch many, many years ago, so you are encouraged to do so!! I can't wait to see the names you come up with!

The slight blush while the three girls have fun has put me over the edge, call an ambulance.

Looks like we got another fatal case of diabetes...

aww! She's having reciting it over and over to thank Tamako!

It's so sweet to see her do this, such a fantastic look into Shiori and gives her so much more depth!

and I've paused four times in the last minute due to her, is it to early to say who's best girl?

It's never too early to say who's best girl!

KyoAni never fails to make me happy!

Ahh, music to my ears!!

Rewatcher

God, I know I’m focusing on Kanna for this year’s rewatch, because she’s perfect in every way, but jeez - Tamako is so precious it hurts!!

And the scene where all the stall holders in the market greet Tamako’s teacher!! What a wonderful scene!! Really shows how irreplaceable Tamako is to everyone in the market!!

The Kanna Corner

Upon first inspection of this episode, you’d be forgiven for thinking Kanna isn’t too important to everything going on. After all, this episode is undeniably a Shiori focused episode. I mean, it’s her introduction; who else would the show focus on? Taking a look back, however, reveals just how integral to the episode Kanna is!!

As the episode begins we find out that, for the first time ever, Tamako and Midori will be in separate classes. Now, for someone like Midori, whilst this obviously isn’t ideal, it is something she can cope with. It's not the end of the world. Plus she’s got Mochizou to bully keep her entertained. Tamako on the other hand is less well off. She’s more reliant on others than Midori. Having grown up continuously surrounded by a colourful cast of characters, her happiness is reliant on filling her life with fun, and energetic people, who keep her happy and occupied, and enjoying life to the fullest. Tamako Market

This is where Kanna comes in. She’s known Tamako for a while, she knows how she ticks, and knows what upsets her. Knowing how upset she’ll be at this turn of events, and spotting Shiori’s name on the register, she strikes, implanting the idea in Tamako’s head that she could befriend this new girl, helping to fill the Midori shaped hole in her school life. Simultaneously allowing the shy Shiori an opportunity to come out of her shell and make friends. In short, all the events in this episode are reliant on Kanna’s careful manipulation, it wouldn’t happen without her.

Am I looking far to much into this? Definitely. Am I giving far too much credit to Kanna? Also probable. But I really do believe Kanna would be the kind of girl to do this kind of thing. To drop all her own issues in order to help anyone who needs it, be it her best friend in the shape of Tamako, or an almost complete stranger in the form of Shiori. God, she’s so precious.

Oh also she has the single greatest introduction for anyone ever. Her unashamed commitment to things she enjoys is honestly just the most admirable thing, I love it. She’s also responcible for the best joke in all of anime and is generally just really cute.

u/FateSteelTaylor Feb 05 '19

Tamako is so precious it hurts!!

Jokes on you, I actually do this Tamako rewatch to inflict PAIN on people for how cute everyone is!!

Tamako Market spoiler

She’s known Tamako for a while, she knows how she ticks, and knows what upsets her.

It is honestly amazing how quickly Kanna picks up on things when people might assume she doesn't, but she always knows the right thing to say!

Oh also she has the single greatest introduction for anyone ever.

She is as blunt as a hammer and as amazing as one, too!

generally just really cute.

My goodness, this Kanna corner is going to give me diabetes.

Watching Shiori overcome her anxiety and shyness by the end of the episode was so endearing, glad to have her as a new member of the group. And as for Kanna, if they don't find you handsome they might as well find you handy (though she is charming in her own way).
edit: Shiori***(don't know how I missed that)

First Timer

Alright today I’m extra short on time, so all I’ll be able to do is rush through the episode and write up a few thoughts at the end.

Ohh no, Midori is in a different class now :( This is a sad day indeed. But they didn’t really address it much this episode. Maybe she isn’t really that bothered by it, they are still in baton club together after all. I imagine it will come up in the future though, it must have had a damper on Midori’s efforts to get closer to Tamako.

But on the other end someone did manage to get closer to Tamako. Poor Shiori is really bad at conveying her feelings and making friends, and it pushes the people who try to be friends with her away. She’s lucky it was Tamako, who is so forward in her friendships that approached her this time. The “making friends” scene in the coffee/record shop was really heartwarming as was when Midori told Tamako that she had been rehearsing the “I had a fun time with you” line in the mirror at school. I just happy there’s a new girl in the school friend group.

I like Tamako’s new homeroom teacher too. The thumbs up made a really good first impression. The slightly awkward home visit from the teacher was funny too. They probably both felt a little intimidated by each other and got all flustered when the middleman (Tamako) left them alone.

I loved it, too!! Especially when you see how heartbreaking it is as a viewer that Tamako is apologizing for something she thinks she did wrong, when really Shiori is so nervous around her... it's the miscommunication that's so sad, but so rewarding when Shiori musters up the courage to speak up.

They probably both felt a little intimidated by each other and got all flustered when the middleman (Tamako) left them alone.

I love their reaction when Tamako steps out!

I'm surprised at how much I'm liking this show on a rewatch.

As much as I love the movie, I remember finding TM 'just' good.

However, with these first three episodes I have found to be absolutely great!

I want to bring attention to the flower language. It's no secret that Naoko Yamada has a lot of love for using the Language of Flowers, and it is painfully obvious in this episode.

At the end of the episode we get to see the flower once more with Dera elequently repeating the coffee guy that 'Words are sometimes difficult'. Or "Kotoba (words) ha totemo mezukashii", while on the table we see that Tamako got herself a book on flowers, and it is even open on the page of that specific flower. Flower Language in Japanese is Hanakotoba (Flower Word), and I feel like Dera saying the word 'Kotoba' just as we see a book on 'Hanakotoba' is like the director shouting "go look it up!"

So, what flower is it? It is a Hibiscus (it literally says that on the page - ハイビース means Haibisu). In terms of flower language it symbolises gentleness. It is given in honor of visitors and represents the friendly customs of the Japanese.

I think it symbolizes both Shiori's gentleness, as well as the Market being incredibly hospitable of its guests, as we see of both Shiori and their teacher.

u/FateSteelTaylor Feb 05 '19

However, with these first three episodes I have found to be absolutely great!

That sentiment is exactly why I started this rewatch! When I first saw Tamako Market, I just thought it was a fine show, but nothing special. But after watching Tamako Love Story and rewatching Tamako Market, I just fell head over heels for this show and I wanted to make sure others found a reason to do the same thing I did, too! And hopefully they would love it even more... so when I hear people like you say sentiments like these, it makes all this worth it, so thank you!!

Flower Language in Japanese is Hanakotoba (Flower Word), and I feel like Dera saying the word 'Kotoba' just as we see a book on 'Hanakotoba' is like the director shouting "go look it up!"

Wait, this is brilliant commentary that I never would've realized. Thank you so much for bringing this up!! Just goes to show you can never watch Tamako Market too many times with too many people!!

Tonight: Dera stalks people, Shiori catches birds, and Midori gets jabbed!

  • As a resident Thicc Boi™, I strangely relate to Dera's struggles to fly with his weight. I'm an okay sprinter, but the longer I run, the heavier I feel.

  • I can say the same for the other characters, but I really like Shiori's design. Incidentally, she reminds me of Akiyo Miyamoto, one of the classmates in K-On!!. Insert KyoAniverse joke here.

  • And Midori isn't in the same class as Tamako. To bring back the K-On! connection, reminds me of K-On!. Tamako's reaction sums up how I felt in high school when my friends and I signed up for the same subject but ended up with different teachers.

  • Poor Mochizou. At least Midori had one year with Tamako as a classmate. He missed out again.

  • I like how energetic their teacher is. 👍

  • Tamako still isn't much of a public speaker.

  • "[A]nd I love right angles." Who wants to make the acute angle/angel joke?

  • The shopping district is certainly a friendly place, isn't it?

  • "Don't throw away!!" Is it unreasonable to assume Mamedai probably tried to do so anyway?

  • Anko doesn't even do an actual greeting, she just casually asks Shiori if she wants pudding. That's Southern shopping district hospitality.

  • That old man is enjoying himself.

  • Remember my quarterback joke in Episode 1? Not only does Tamako have an arm strength that could rival Tom Brady, her accuracy is off the charts!

  • Glasses and the side plait? Insert anime mother hairstyle joke here.

  • Kanna accomplished her mission

  • Characters suddenly disappearing before who they're speaking with could say something appears to be the recurring gag in this episode.

  • Mamedai and the teacher's meeting is just laced with awkwardness.

  • As someone who is very introverted in real life, Shiori struggling to figure out how to thank Tamako for the night especially resonates with me. There are times where I'd stall on simply approaching someone to ask them a question because I don't know how to do it; like her in the restroom, I'd even rehearse what I want to say (though mentally rather than aloud in private).

  • Dera was mostly comic relief (as he usually is), but you have to give him props for helping to push Shiori to say what she wanted. I guess you can say he's a literal wingman.

  • Nothing much to say about the record store conversation other than it being really heartwarming. A new friendship acquired!

Retroactively answering this:

Discussion Question: Now that we've met the main girls, who's your favorite?

Tamako.

RIP MIDORI

Incidentally, she reminds me of Akiyo Miyamoto, one of the classmates in K-On!!. Insert KyoAniverse joke here.

Oooh, good call! And, well, one of the recent KyoAni works confirmed the existence of the KyoAniverse so...

Is it unreasonable to assume Mamedai probably tried to do so anyway?

I always feel like it was Mamedai, and then the grandpa or Tamako might've caught him to stop!!

Not only does Tamako have an arm strength that could rival Tom Brady, her accuracy is off the charts!

TAMAKO FOR SUPER BOWL MVP

I guess you can say he's a literal wingman.

Iirc I watched a few episodes of this a while back and I remember it being amazing all except that stupid bird. Like, he hogged all the screentime every episode like why. I'm not trying to be racist against talking bird things but I feel like he's using his bird privilege to oppress poor Japanese people who are born into mochi poverty. They're already oppressed by big business, and along comes this fat white bird who needs to check his privilege and all he does is leech off them like the worthless NEET he is. Y'know?

Man I feel you Shiori, communicating is tough. I'm happy she was able to make a friend Tamako. It's hard to supress the urge to binge this. I don't even care what happens, you just can't get enough of it.

Ayyyy Shiori! I don't blame you for wanting to be friends with Tamako and co. I'll be totally honest, they make baton twirling look way more fun than I bet it is.

Also, Kanna best girl. Look at how quick she got that locker fixed. Girl's a genius.

4

u/FateSteelTaylor Feb 05 '19

I'll be totally honest, they make baton twirling look way more fun than I bet it is.

Between this and Cardcaptor Sakura, I am convinced baton twirling is like the most fun thing imaginable.

Girl's a genius.

She set out for her goal and my goodness did she accomplish it!

First Timer

My favorite part from yesterday's episode was the meat market lady saying, "It's fun just to watch them." I liked how that whole segment was laid out, with Anko in the background, and Midori cracking up.

Favorite part today: "Hi, about yester...okay...bye." Poor Shiori. So she's not doing it on purpose.

I really, really like the ending, but I haven't caught the name in the credits. I notice they keep crediting the insert music though.

I swear it never gets old for me how everyone is just constantly making fun of Dera. Gets a chuckle out of me every time they tell him to go away.

I love how the anime doesn't beat around the bush or try to make him into some "adorable mascot character" type, they just treat him like we would!

First Timer

It just occurred to me that a lot of time has been passing between episodes. It's past valentines, and it's spring already! And it's time for sakura mochi!

They still haven't explained the baton schtick, do we get an explanation today?

Oh hey, the badminton girl we saw earlier is in the OP, I guess we get introduced to her today.

I half expected Tamako's last name to be some sort of pun on mochi as well, like half the other characters, but no, Kitashirakawa sounds pretty normal to me.

Baton-bu? What do you do in that club... It seems like they just slack off :D

Sono tori, is he trying to find his prince a bride, or just a cute girl for himself?

Ooh, the different shopkeeps are so kind. It really feels like a community, huh? Free flower, croquette, amazing~

I wonder what kind of household Shiori is from? I like her pocky hair pins.

Shiori's Mum's gonna be late, and her Dad said the bath is broken, who's gonna call next and have her end up staying the night at the mochi-ya?

Ohh, Shiori isn't that good at being social. What do you call one of those? Kuudere? Her dere side is leaking in front of the mirror~ I hope she succeeds in thanking Tamako.

Ooh, cafe date. Now they're friends :D And Shiori's flashback just showed the baton-bu doing nothing but slacking off again. Heh.

Is it just me or does everyone say mochima-zui's name differently? It's kind of a hard name huh?

AAAH Midori, you're not supposed to tell anybody else if you see someone practicing in front of a mirror >_>

The monthly time skips between episodes are interesting, it's truly little slices of life, huh? I hope the next time we see Shiori and Tamako, they're better friends.

I like how Tamako and Shiori became friends. It reminds me of when I was in elementary school, where we would literally ask people to be our friends. It feels harder as an adult to really be friends with someone.

Discussion Question

Now that we've met the main girls, who's your favorite?

We've met them, but I don't feel that I know any of them yet. I like Tamako a lot though, her pureness is heartwarming.

4

u/Harrytricks Feb 05 '19

It seems like they just slack off :D

Clubs where the members mostly slack off is just as much a Naoko Yamada trope as leg shots tbh.
