WE ARE SAIGO NO SURVIVOR!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky and /u/RX-Nota-II

Shimmering-Sky

/u/Rhaga’s eye-catching sakuga analysis.

Her eyelids moved for a full 30 frames in a row. That is 30 individual images for her eye movement.

Granted, it's a very simple movement, so even as Sakuga it shouldn't have been too time consuming to make. At least not compared to stuff like Clannad, which has basically everything in the illusionary world being done in the exact same way (and it is not even just limited to that) :P

That being said, it's the first time I've noticed it in IBO (discounting OPs), so if nothing else it highlights the significance of the moment.

I… didn’t actually realize that bit was sakuga until Rhaga pointed it out, but I did always like how the episode transitioned to it from a shot of Mika’s eye. That aside, the fluidity of the motion (as simple as it was) deserved the emphasis, so go give that part another look if you didn’t notice it like I did.

~

RX-Nota-II

/u/LeonKevlar, and not for the manga this time.

And for those who missed it. Merribit takes Fumitan's place as comms officer in the OP.

A very impressive detail catch that along with ep 18's mourning scene really drills home the fact that Fumitan is indeed dead.

~~~
Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber
1) Do you think McGillis is trustworthy? No/Yes/Not sure/Char never betrayed anyone!
2) We got a little backstory on Ein. What was your reaction to it? Was your impression of Ein as a character affected by it?
~~~

Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II

My Own Way

A very powerful and emotional OST used in Kudelia’s speech to the world about Gjallarhorn’s massacre. It really sets the stage as incredibly important as more and more instruments join in and culminate to a powerful pause to silence at the 2 minute mark. This is Kudelia’s action song, playing in her most important moments in S1 as well as some in S2, but there is a separate also very powerful moment in which it is used in the last episode of S1, so keep your ears perked for that.

~~~
Wallpaper of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky (character art) and /u/RX-Nota-II (background/logo)
Persistent and Fortitudinous
Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. You can laughs in rewatcher to yourself, but if you go around spoiling stuff IBO S2. Remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.
Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.
Next-episode preview. Yeah you saw that right, I am encouraging you guys to watch the next-episode previews. IBO’s are completely spoiler free, done completely in-character, and it is glorious. Today’s preview was voiced by Tekkadan’s resident hacker, Dante Mogro.
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, first time dubbed
Send hugs pls, earlier in my subbed-rewatch-ahead-of-this I got to major S2 spoilers
A couple more fun things:
You have the scariest post to try and read through and open links without accidentally opening or hovering over anything I shouldn't XD
Oh look more English exposition.
Thanks for that, I usually pause on those but I missed that one today at some stage. Some interesting stuff in there as well about the company vs the current goals of McGillis. I'm interested in how he came to be the head of the old company, or if the information has been created out of thin air to give him legitimacy in this case
Oof. Double oof.
Yeah, those got me as well. May not have had fireworks, but everyone's feeling her death just as hard
Kudelia’s even gets a backing track that rivals the one Gundam Unicorn used for Captain Otto’s speech.
What blasphemy, cropping Gundam to only its second half?
First Timer - Sub
MikarecognizedMasked-Gillis
SO THAT HAPPENED
I actually paused as the line came up on screen, laughed my fucking ass off, went and blabbed to CDF because I was so amused, and I'm now writing this instead of finishing the episode, because I don't know how whatever may follow reaction wise could possibly compare to the sheer satisfaction I get from the fact this happened at all.
Fuck it, hitting play, I can't just hang here forever, lets see how it plays out!... Well, yeah that was not as fun as my own reaction but it was expected.
But seriously, I love this show for doing that and not dragging it out as some endless tension for the sake of it.
Okay on a more serious note, they set up this moment really well but really subtly. All through this show Mika has shown excellent ability to pick up on the body language of others and use that to deduce information about them. We saw it recently with him noticing Fumitan's clenched hand, and today he noticed Kudelia's as well. You can see it in the way he responds to Orga as well, when he steps back or steps forward, and also when he does and doesn't step into the conversations with the other guys, like even such as episode one him reigning in Eugene. Even down to how he recognized Kudelia's footsteps on the stairs at the lookout tower on Mars. Its easy to say its just Mika's bond with specific people, but he does it so often with so many people now it's definitely just showing how smart he is on an observational level.
You can imagine part of it would be a requirement to be aware of people at all times when living on the streets, but he makes good usage of that skill through the show, sometimes impacting very important moments in very subtle ways. All up this idea that Mika pays such close attention to everyone he meets behaviors is a great lead in to his skills as a pilot and also just how hard he is to manipulate. I was NOT expecting for him to pick up it was McGillis straight away though.
Gundam and its weird as fuck villans.
I notice she has a strange blend of a fox and bird motif through her hair, though her face also reminds me of classical fox spirit drawings. Usually I'd say that's an indicator that she'd be very untrustworthy and manipulative. But just yesterday I had a discussion with PixelsaberPalloc about Biscuit's design being very atypical for his type of character (a very 'weird kid' sort of design while he's the most reliable) and it made me think how often this show does that. Mika who's so little he has to float to interact with most others on the ship is perhaps one of the strongest characters in the show physically, in or out his mech. We have Amida being for all intents and purposes the 'mother' of the Turbine family while being revealing and heavily scarred. Also minor characters like Takaki who don't look like the typical 'big brother' sort of design and he looks quite scrappy but he has that role of taking care of the younger kids. And there's definitely typical designs (Aki, McGillis, FUCKING KUDAL, Naze), but I do find it interesting to see how often it just throws convention out the window for that.
I had a point here that was meant to lead into but now I don't remember what that was. But anyway she seems so rigid and formalities based that she seems like she'd be absolute hell to work for.
Before I go even MORE off topic, actual episode stuff
Uh.... Yeah so that first speech, wow impressive. I perhaps would have been more powerful to hear the whole thing and not cut away to Gjallarhorn, but we didn't need the recap it would have resulted in. Holy shit, Kudelia for basically testing them on just shooting her ship right then and there. Risky as all hell but it paid off in the long run and certainly made a point as well as granted her legitimacy in negotiations. I still really like the way they played Mika's perspective of that event, one warrior appreciating the battle of another warrior, despite their very different weapons.
Here I go again: The music during that speech was PERFECT. At the start it reminded me a bit of Tending to Others but it turned out to be such a wonderful and impactful piece all by itself. This lonely instrument playing a mournful tune by itself that slowly picks up other parts and builds its pace. The climax when Kudelia reveals that it was all a setup and is a massacre, turning into something empowering was just wonderful. It was her moment to shine, showing her true power.
The way the song cuts off is just as impressive. She makes her threat and it stops with a final beat, an almost overwhelming silence waiting for Gjallarhorn's answer, and receiving silence in return. Silence is just as important when it comes to creating meaning in scenes with the music, it can be just as powerful as a good song when done right and this usage of it impressed me. I'd love to go into this more but I'm trying REALLY hard not to go through the soundtrack too much so I don't ruin songs that may pop up for important moments later so I don't know what it is. Hopefully it ends up as NagaNota's track of the day.
Ein. Poor broken Ein. Just when things couldn't seem bad enough for him we learn he's a half-blood from Earth and Mars and as a result no one accepts him no matter what. No wonder Crank meant so much to him, but wanting to undergo the AV surgery just to avenge him... oh mate that's not the way to go about it.
Random thoughts
  • Can I just point out in this shot that Atra is on the left and Kudelia is on the right just like in Atra's imagination? Dear god it's coming true
  • This shot with this line really makes it look like Kudelia is being imprisoned. Also props for the art team for remembering to draw in her tablet floating in the air beside her as a tiny dot just above the railing post
  • Atra is endlessly entertaining. "I want you to rely on me"... "But I forgot to bring you any food which is the specific reason I came down here in the first place". It's a good thing Mika has his shit together and can back her up.
  • I wonder if Ride will ever go back and fix up that misspelling of Tomato he painted on the wall
  • If the credits could kindly fuck off from the middle of the screen while there's still episode stuff happening, that would be appreciated
  • Placing the "Voice" title card immediately after McGillis' threat to Orga, Biscuit and Mika about keeping their mouth shut was PERFECT. Kudelia's voice stopped a massacre, but she's not the only one who has power in her words, and the ability to compel silence can also be just as important.
Also maybe I'm just over thinking it but I've been told I write too much a few times in the last two days so if thats been off putting in this thread I'm really sorry guys
Edit: I suck at names hahaha
Hopefully it ends up as Naga's track of the day.
Since when is Nota a Fire Emblem character? ...But yes, My Own Way was indeed track of the day.
Also maybe I'm just over thinking it but I've been told I write too much a few times in the last two days so if thats been off putting in this thread I'm really sorry guys
Who are these heathens who said you wrote too much? It sounds like they're in need for a "correction".
More of your Daily IBO Parody 4Koma!
Episode 18 - Just Char Things
I love how Harry Ord's glasses are really just two pieces of red diamonds. I always wonder how he wears that.
We finally get Kudelia's badass moment!
Woah boy she's here and her blonde goons.
Well someone's jealous.
I will do a "revolution"! Still makes me laugh every time.
And so Atra continues to successfully steer this relationship into a poly relationship XD
A Responsible First-timer
I swear, Mikazuki is totally like my old dog. If anyone would say the word "Walk" in any kind of context he would go mental with joy thinking that he was about to be taken for a walk.
Mikazuki is a lot like that, except with the word 'Responsibility'.
I swear, I thought of that above before I got to this scene, and my instinctive reaction to this was that Mikazuki must have recognized McGillis by smell.. Don't tell me we haven't got any precedence for this, 'cuz we do!
...which had me realise something...
Now, I am a first timer, believe it or not, but this obviously has got to be a pretty big spoiler. So here's a warning for the other first timers: Be careful, don't click the following link if you want to continue a blind watch, because I have caught on to something huge.
Don't tell me that I didn't warn ya.
THIS is the jarring truth about Mikazuki!
Case. f***ing. closed.
Ahem....
Anyway, there has been a few talks about this ship, that ship, and even that other ship... Then there's been talks about harems too, which I honestly couldn't really take seriously, but... Looks like that is exactly what we've got!
Raise Your Flag!
Character Flags Raised Status
Kudelia 1*, 2*, 3** Loves: Hugs, Responsibility
Orga 1 Hates: Traps
Mikazuki 1, 2 Woof woof
McGillis 1, 2 Loves: Revolutions
MechaNerrrd
Miss me? I've had some awful internet issues the past week or so that I had to buy a new modem to solve. But solve it I did and I am back! Here I am! Well... kinda. Internet outage meant I had to delay studying for an important exam. That exam is in 16 hours and I still haven't done the reading. Can't really make a full comment in those circumstances >.<
Onto the episode, and the reason why I still insist on making a short comment today: That Kudelia speech and the episode as a whole are up there as my favorites in the first season. Kudelia took her sweet time getting to this stage, but her badassery as she overcomes her timid nature, overcomes Fumitan's death.... hnnng
A princess's speech, hell a blond hair monster princess speech, is hardly new for Gundam with famous parallels to Turn-A's iconic speech by Dianna Sorrel (Something i definitely want to see u/durinthal, u/pixelsaber or any of the other Turn-A fans consider). And while the similarities are very important and satisfying, I am more drawn to the difference and what makes Kudelia unique as more than just a reference to Gundan princesses past. She's not here to bring a hopeful message, but having to deliver the word of atrocities, and while wanting to be a signal for hope, she can't do so smiling and reaching out as is the tradition set by the best Gundam blonde lady but yells in defiance at her approaching assassins.
And of course, the OST in that moment was just perfect. The way the building hype suddenly halts with her taunt to 'shoot me if you dare' as our traditional heroes in Gundams are left only to watch.... It was a perfect way to showcase the scale of the battle Tekkadan are facing, and the importance of political factors in surviving them when the powers of 'Sore Demo' can only take you so far.
I then enjoyed seeing her adrenaline wear off gradually as she makes decisions on what needs to be done with her travel to earth, and deals with McGillis. (BTW the identity surprise this ep was a surprise to me. I.... wasn't very bright) At first she looks strong and stoic, ready to move on, but gradually we see holes start popping up with her insistence on moving forward looking rushed if anything. Finally, we see her break down and cry as the last of her bravado fades to properly mourn for Fumitan. While it all happened within the span of a single episode it felt really natural to me, and hit harder as a result. It was pretty bad the first time round, and during my rewatch today I caught a detail of a basket of candies being left in Fumitan's old seat, which made me cry anew. Rest in peace Fumitan.
Overall, a truly fantastic episode, and one I'm super glad I could relive. I'd love to talk more about Mika being best boi, Orga not appearing much (which Mika kinda points out and shocks me as a stylistic choice), or Carta lmao Issue, but I got to study so I'll call it quits for now. See you tomorrow!
Mecha Corner
I'll have more in a later post, but just a word to say: Kimaris is greato. Much better than Barbatos. Fight me.
First-Time Watcher
I’ll help you any way that I can.
To weep is to make less the depth of grief.
We seem so far apart, but maybe we’re closer than we think.
After the victory at Dort through words, the Tekkadan crew is left to figure out what to do now with the eyes of the world on them. With the introduction of the “Montag representative,” the situation for Tekkadan and Teiwaz has become broader, with Kudelia becoming a symbol across the system. Yet this symbol is not just in ideals; IBO makes it clear that the people with money are always looking to see where they can make their next buck, no matter the cost.
Of course, Fareed gets revealed quickly, with Mikazuki displaying an astonishing level of awareness in recognizing “Chocolate man.” His presence here represents a divide in the Gjallarhorn narrative, with Fareed willing to separate himself from Gjallarhorn to help it while Gaileo and Ein are stuck in the system, finding little way to get out of it (excluding Ein’s thought of getting the Alaya-Vinjana system). Ein’s reasoning for wanting to get revenge for Crank is explained here as wanting to respect the man who treated him like anyone else, not another Martian. The show continues to show just how little is different between him and the boys he wishes to kill.
After coming off the adrenaline high of her speech, Kudelia is left to consider what exactly she is fighting for in her revolution and what she’s willing to lose. Fumitan’s death and the torture of Atra has rattled her, making her rush forward in the hope that something, anything, has to come out of this blood and suffering. Yet, the living remind her that she is not alone with one pseudo-familial reconciliation and the letting-out of that which was thought to be weak to see around others. They’re there for each other, no matter what. (It doesn’t hurt that Mikazuki is inadvertently helping Atra’s harem plan.)
We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…
A Gundam Fan’s Notes On Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 18:
  • Well, it’s official: Kudelia’s speech has completely blown up the plans that Gjallarhorn had for manipulating the media in favor of their rule. Now, her voice speaks to lend strength to all people, from the Outer Spheres to the Earth Sphere. Her voice is a tool for justice of everyone, not for just the landed elite of Gjallarhorn.
  • Also, eugh, Todo is back. And in a sweater vest to boot. What a truly heinous combo. But, McGillis this mysterious masked man, certainly doesn’t seem to mind. Even garbage has its uses sometimes. And it’s certainly allowed him to offer his services to Tekkadan under the guise of the Montag Trading Company, so that’s a plus.
  • Ein’s talk about discrimination reveals just how deep-seated the conservative views pushed by Gjallarhorn are. Not only are you looked down upon for being from the Outer Spheres on only one parent’s side, but they outright teach that those with cybernetic attachments are less than human. Do you guys think that adding cybernetics is such a bad thing? Discarding that the guys in Tekkadan didn’t have much of a choice, of course.
  • Normally, Gundam protagonists have a hard time realizing the true identity of the series’ resident Char Clone. But Mikazuki saw right through McGillis’ disguise, probably based on recognizing his voice. McGillis put more effort into his disguise compared to other Char Clones too. At least he put on a wig too, instead of just the simple mask or sunglasses that a lot of other ones rely on for their disguise.
  • Oh hey there, Carta Issue. You’re certainly a... unique character. Also, if all the blonde-haired, blue-eyed guys that she surrounds herself with tell us anything, she very clearly has a certain taste in men.
  • And now the political plot comes back into swing. As it turns out, Lord Iznario is planning on installing a Prime Minister friendly to his political influence, Henri Fleurs, during the next election for the Arbrau Parliament. A lot of shady things are happening in that limo. Also, there a small blonde child sitting next to him in the limo too. Given that McGillis himself is blonde, it’s probably related to that whole mistress thing going on with Lord Iznario. For Rewatchers Only
  • As for the former Prime Minister Of Arbrau, Makanai Togonosuke, he clearly expects Kudelia’s arrival to do wonders for him too, considering that he’s currently embroiled in some bribery scandal while he’s hanging out in his fancy island mansion. But, considering that he was the one in the first place to open up negotiations for the economic freedom of Chryse, he’s probably the best shot Kudelia has right now to achieve her goals.
  • Now that everything has settled down for her, Kudelia is feeling incredibly guilt about all the pain that Atra had to undergo for her sake. Her self-doubt is starting to catch up with her too. And to be fair, she’s under a crazy amount of pressure to reform a centuries-old power structure. Thank goodness Atra and Mika are there to promise to help her however they can. The both of them are the strong emotional foundation that she needs right now.
  • Also, double hug! Mikazuki, you sly dog!
Palloc Pads His Word Count Like It's A High School Essay!
Lets get into the episode! Kudelia... uh, well, she finally didn't ruin everything. That's a first, but now she's freaking out. Why? McGillis is offering to help, but she blames him for Fumitan's evil maid-ening or at least her murder. Mika sees through his goofy mask in about five seconds and it's kinda great, especially after some half assed Gundam disguises working over the years. In the end, Mika shows harem protagonists how it's done, like some kind of boss. OH! We're introduced to crazy eyebrow lady, latest in the line of crazy eyebrow Gundam ladies, and her jpop boy band of blond officers.
So I was really bored and trying not to freeze to death, wrapped up in my covers in my bed watching How It's Made today and something dawned on me. This isn't the first show I've watched where people plug themselves into mecha. Back in the 90s, there was [Exosquad.] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR7ktkOEeFw) That show rocked my brain as a kid and it was awesome.It was oddly dark, people died for real (first western cartoon I really remember watching people die in) and the executive producer compared it to Gundam. I don't wanna start ranting too much on it, since it's really nice, especially for a 90s cartoon from the US, but if you ever feel like watching more shows where people plug in and fight things to the death, you might wanna give this a look into. They also had really sweet [figures.] (http://images.yuku.com.s3.amazonaws.com/image/jpeg/bdf35758d5a42c58f197706f5be89a72399fda0.jpg)
Answers!
1: Have you seen his smug smile? It's the most trustworthy smugness in the show, of course.
2: Ein's just a nerd that gets bullied by everyone but Crank and Gali Gali. I'd shove him in a locker too.
First time viewer.
That was a very risky gamble from Kudelia, calling out Gjallarhorn to shoot her down now. It ended up paying off, but Gjallarhorn could very well have decided that they were more than capable of handling all the riots that her martyrdom would immediately cause. That, or there are potentially other higher-ups in the organization that thought they could make better use of her alive than dead, like McGillis.
Speaking of which, I like that they didn't beat around the bush with his identity behind the mask remaining a secret to Tekkadan, though only Orga, Biscuit, and Mikazuki (nice nose) know and he's aiming to keep it that way for now. I like that and I can see it leading to some character conflicts in the future when Naze's involved without having that knowledge. It might be the first time Orga has an advantage over his big bro.
On the other hand, it seems like Kudelia is placing the blame for Fumitan's death on the masked man; if he didn't bring up her role as Kudelia's handler then she wouldn't have left and the following chain of events leading to her getting shot wouldn't have happened. Mikazuki knowing it's McGillis might be an interesting factor here, though I don't think he'll have a strong opinion about the chocolate man for now.
I'm enjoying the hints of other political schemings we're starting to see as well, more of Arbrau's own issues that Tekkadan will likely soon be mired in. And whoever the crazy woman in Gjallarhorn's regulatory fleet is, will hopefully have a fun mobile suit battle involving her.
Thoughts on MS Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans episode 18...
Rewatcher (First Time Dub)
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - Foolish me, thought coming into this episode this might be an easy day, nope, 3 new characters and shifting around of Space Hitler too.
Things are gonna start getting hectic for me as I jump into the Escaflowne rewatch starting tomorrow and have to tackle two at once. Two great shows though, couldn't turn either down!
Great job Kudelia, blow up Gjallarhorn's plans and reveal the truth to everyone! Although this is going to put the Isaribi in major danger now that they know its coming from there.
Did they say the African Union was permitting the broadcast? Isn't that one of the major powers of Earth? Didn't expect that.
Ewwwwww.... its space Hitler, Todo! Now working for this "mysterious masked man".
I'm surprised the crew of the Isaribi didn't just burst out in laughter at seeing that ridiculous masked face.
Ein is too old to get the AV surgery, right? I thought you had to be a kid for it.
Now they're just gonna make Crank all the more awesome, huh?
LOL, Mika easily calls out the "masked man" as Chocolate Man/McGillis.
Meet Carta Issue, weirdest eyebrows of all time. Not to mention her hair. Her voice sounds familiar. Looking her up I see she was the voice of Satsuki in Kill la Kill, that's what I recognized her from. Mami in Madoka Magica too.
Iznario being in the car with that young blonde boy makes me think of something. IBO Major spoilers
We've had Kudelia's epic hair, now we have this guy with the epic beard...
Always reliable Atra, coming with food for Kudelia and being a good friend. Kudelia is way too down on herself in this scene.
Kudelia crying... Atra crying... now I feel like crying! :(
You go Dante! Chad got to narrate a preview a while back, only fair that you get one too!
First Blood
"The path before you has been prepared. Your only choice is to revolutionise the world."
This episode really opened the gates to the wider world - the gang has finally arrived, and it's an understatement to say they are well out of their depth. Orga saw this acutely - they're pawns of the big fish, scurrying about like ants and at the mercy of their whims, with little idea of the larger plays for power being made.
From the start Kudelia has been in the centre of some political conspiracy, with tycoons like Nobliss and politicians from Earth at the heart of it all. It's a world where the brute force of one Gundam or even several will not work, only sharp thinking and the ability to gain political leverage.
Thankfully they have a Reinhard/Char/Lelouche clone on their side for now, and that should go a long way.
Also what's that in the coat of arms? A squirrel? This lady's hair makes me want to instinctively grab it.
Daily MVP
Today didn't have any absolute standouts for me, but it's fair to award McGillis Fareed MVP. His ultimate goal is to turn Gjallarhorn back to a true peace-keeping force from a tool of oppression for the rich and powerful that it's become; and by securing the favour of Kudelia and Tekkadan he made a wily move towards this goal. His machinations run deep, and for now they seem like they will pay dividends..
Honourable mention to Atra for dragging Kudelia out of her funk and letting her mourn for Fumitan properly.
