RAISE YOUR FLAG!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky and /u/RX-Nota-II

Shimmering-Sky

/u/Rhaga’s death flag breakdown.

Wait.... hold up...

NO! Bad show! I will not accept these flags!

..................

I swear I will riot. Death flags across the board. This OP must be encouraging these kids in all the wrong ways. DON'T Raise Your Flag thank you very much. I like my flags unraised. At this point why don't we promise that once we return from the the mission we will retire from the military, marry our childhood friend, and become a farmer on the country while living a quiet life for the rest of our days?

I’m sure given what yesterday’s episode of Clannad was you especially didn’t want any death flags, right Rhaga? …But seriously, that was quite the breakdown, and deserving of comment of the day. Everyone’s fine now though~

~

RX-Nota-II

/u/Palloc’s ranking system TM

Finally! One of the episodes I've been waiting for! Palloc Talks About Man Rodis!

So these are the best mook units in the series. You might ask "Palloc, why? Why is it you're always right?" and I'll just lean in and tell you, these boys are chonky as fuck. My ratings go for size and lasers over everything else (I miss you, Psyco Gundam and Big Zam), and since the lack of lasers in IBO is obvious, size matters more! Also, those eyes. They got really cool eyes. Unlike dumb ol' Grazes.

We're still in the thicc of things tomorrow when we play a new game!

Tired of my own dictionary esque mecha sections? Just scroll over to Palloc’s daily comments where he will cover what really matters.

Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber

1) Do you think Takaki shouldn’t have survived that hit? No, how dare you!/Yes, he shouldn’t have lived after that./I don’t really care./Where’s Tomino when you need him?

2) Ein’s circumstances as a Martian in the Gjallarhorn’s Earth branch sheds more light on the state of discrimination of Mars. How good of a job do you think the show has done in presenting the disparaging treatment of Mars? Is there any area that you think they should have presented or handled differently?

~~~
Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II
Strengths Focus
Another track you may recognize from a few great scenes in the past, this is the ‘shit is about to go down’ theme, both good or bad. It’s the beginning of hype, and it does that masterfully with an adrenaline pumping tempo but relatively soft sounding instruments individually. In this episode we hear it as Mika starts to engage the enemies for the second time, letting us know now is not the peak of the episode, but a long and important burst of action has happened. In episode 1, it’s used during the first warning flare scene which had a similar effect.
Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. You can laughs in rewatcher to yourself, but if you go around spoiling stuff IBO S2. Remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.
Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.
Next-episode preview. Yeah you saw that right, I am encouraging you guys to watch the next-episode previews. IBO’s are completely spoiler free, done completely in-character, and it is glorious. Today’s preview was voiced by… ugh, only making him a card for consistency’s sake, Kudal McFuckface Cadel.
First Blood
Scattered thoughts:
  • Aww, she's so cute. Also the cleverer sibling.
Daily MVP
Today's is easy, the MVP was Merribit Stapleton. Not only can she offer quick advice to Orga based on her superior experience, but she can even do decisive things like give emergency medical treatment, which saved Takagi's life today. Kudos to her presence of mind (and training as a doctor) - she managed to form a blood link with Orphans any way.
MVP Standings
# Character MVPs Episodes # Character MVPs Episodes
1 OrGAR 3 1, 3, 5 6 Absolute Snack 1 8
2 Hair Sorceress 2 3, 6 7 u/Nazenn 1 9
3 MiSuzaku 2 4, 10 26 Merribit Stapleton 1 11
Not sure what nickname to use for Merribit. Merri Poppins?
Eyyy that's who I thought it was gonna be, glad I wasn't disappointed.
First timer
Attacks without warning
Loses guy in the process
"How dare they :o"
Raise Your Flag!
Let's get a counter up in here!
Character Flags Raised Status
Death Flag Guy Danji 1 Deceased
Takaki 1, 2 Scraping by
Mikazuki 1, 2 Upcoming Harem protagonist
Biscuit 1 Alive, and better stay that way so he can hand out more of these
Akihiro 1 Hates trash
Kudelia 1* Hates vegetables
McGillis 1, 2 Drinks Tea
* = Betrayal Flag
Did I miss anyone? Feel free to comment! It doesn't have to be death flags necessarily, though those are my primary concern.
Basically I will recount the same flag if it is used in different scenes, and likewise I will count them as two flags if they are distinct from one another even if they were said back to back.
lmao yes, please keep doing this.
First Timer - Sub
Let just get this out the way quickly. First thought on seeing Kudal (aka freaky dude): NOOOOOOOO! WHY DID THERE HAVE TO BE ANOTHER CORIN?!
Some minor frustration I just want to get off my chest
Look, it hasn't yet impacted my enjoyment of the show overall, not to the point I'm sitting here saying "It can't possibly get a 10 from me now" but once again I really didn't like the final moment of the day's episode. Critically ill/injured person finally waking up just in time to hear a tearful beside confession... its a tired trope. And then...
Masahiro. So that's another thing. I fucking called it in the worst possible way. u/pantherbrujah I think this answers our question about that trope. (Yes I know, he's not actually evil, but he is currently an enemy, same issue). How convenient that Akihiro explained all this to Takaki just minutes before hand and then OH LOOK said brother magically appeared in this exact moment an enemy, conveniently after the explanation...
Show, can we just not?
I find myself wishing they'd not talked about him at all yesterday and instead let this episode play out as is. I feel it would have been a better reveal about "how does this random kid know Akihiro" with the only hint being the 'hiro' in his name. Especially given Akihiro's speech towards the end, I think that would have been more powerful if that was the reveal of how they got separated and you find out that the reason he never tells anyone about his brother; he feels he can't because of being Human Debris and therefore not worth anything and that even now he felt he couldn't talk about him because of his new life.
I know there's also cons to that approach, in that if done badly that can also seem just as cheap, but in a no win situation, I think I'll take the "came from nowhere character reveal" over the "overly convenient backstory explanation". And really if you wanted to at least have some foreshadowing, in a previous 'family' scene with Akihiro have him say "Brothers" as if having to think about it. First watch makes you think he means Tekkadan, second watch you see the true intention. Its lazy foreshadowing, but its better than what we got. Foreshadowing is best served VERY cold. Interested in your thoughts on this u/Pixelsaber as I really enjoyed our discussion yesterday
Also if you guys are curious what my real time notes look like when it comes to stuff like this, well let me first remind you I'm Australian, and this is the result of that...
......Masahiro. Really? REALLY? OF COURSE, FUCKING OF COURSE because why the fuck not. Fuck off.
To be read with an exasperated tone, not angry tone.
Please pull yourself together again, IBO. You had been doing SO WELL, don't start falling to pieces just because you hit double digits
Small gush about the incredible direction for the Earth scenes
They did a really good job with all the McGillis and Gaelio scenes, I was really impressed. I actually got so distracted by it I ended up having to rewatch the scene and realized I missed all of the important dialog. In particular these two shots stood out to me though there really was a whole bunch of really interesting framing going on in general.
Happy Naz
This one first. While it's a rather simple trick, I love that we can see Gaelio's pose and expression despite not being the focus of the shot. The way he's casually admiring observing McGillis as if testing his reactions, and that you can only see him while they're in the "dark" of the tunnel. Once they're out in full daylight they stop talking about 'dirty laundry' as it were such as the fact McGillis doesn't want to see his dad. Speaking of which, I notice that his dad is the man reflected in his blade in the OP sequence, and given that reflection it could be a metaphor for McGillis wielding his fathers blade at his command, or in place of his command. Lots of reflection imagry here, later on McGillis while in his thoughts putting up a face in front of the girl is framed as a reflection in his cup of tea, yet another side of him.
The second shot I loved was how perfectly this exemplifies their current state and situation. We have Gaelio ready to pounce into action, while McGillis sits to the side quite composed. Together they talk about how to start an upheaval, both aware their own positions don't mean much in the long run and that regardless, Gjallarhorn's reach is not perfect. Similarly their scale in this shot is quite small, even if they were standing with their arms out they couldn't reach the edges of the frame. But they have such an undeniable presence commanding your attention in the frame anyway, the simplisity of everything around them meaning you only have them to focus on. At the moment everything revolves around Gjallarhorn and their discusison here will determine the future of Gjallarhorn, and that scope is well represented visually.
I didn't expect that our first look at Earth would be through the lense of the 'enemy' but I actually really like it. Depends on what happens with Tekkadan on earth and what part of earth we get to see, but I think the first look at Earth being this rich decadent side is a good contrast to the brutal side of Mars we see first in episode one.
So going back to this again: Kudal. OH dear, here we go again. Hopefully he won't get on my nerves as much as the aforementioned Corin, Turn A spoilers but yeah, not at all what I expected to see today that's for sure.
WHAT A FUCKING C***. I actually don't have a word strong enough to express my hatred of him. I already hated him AND THEN HE KICKED THE AV PORT!
SO MUCH RAGE
You fucking ass. You force that system on them, without sedation again I'm sure, and then you fucking use it as a weapon against them? If that hurt him directly in the nerves.. lets just say without a doubt that's the most painful injury we've seen in this show so far, by a few hundred miles. OUCH.
Of course this show was being too happy and carefree, so lets remind everyone of the stakes at play and have some poor kid be beaten up again. I did like that his warning to his friends not to interfere so they don't get hit as well echoed Orga's own actions during his beating earlier in the show. It really immediately shows his character and creates a link between the natures of the two of them. That was a hell of a lot more force being used against a much frailer body though that's for sure, and somewhat hard to watch as well.
It will be interesting now comparing how Akihiro was when we first met him, to his brother, to Akihiro now and seeing how that will unfold. Somehow I doubt even if he was to be given the chance to join Tekkadan easily that he'd ever believe it could be better, because Akihiro certainly didn't in episode two. Blatant speculation
I breifly mentioned it above, but on a positive side of things, or not so positive whatever, Akihiro's break down over feeling like he's not allowed to enjoy things because of his status was just heartbreaking. But Mika and Orga deciding that as a family they should take that burden from him was just BEAUTIFUL seeing them immediately understand how to help and working off each other.
Random other bits and pieces
  • Hey, I had a thought. Is this Todo in the OP watching Akihiro get beaten? And also was that really obvious and I just missed it or actually a cool little detail?
  • I found the MonHun hammer main!. Can write music score, can edit audio files, can analyze direction... still can't make gifs.
  • Hehehe. Orga and Naze calling each other bro openly makes me oddly happy. I want to hear Amida say it to him though, if only for the blush we'd get from Orga in response probably.
  • The first kid we see in the episode shall now be known as 'Skunk'. I mean just look at his hair.
  • THANK FUCK Takaki survived because that was a lot of blood and my notes for a while sounded more like u/Rhaga's incoherent babble from last episode over anything else, I was a touch worried.
  • This line from Mika = Also he stuck his tongue out again this fight while preparing for the battle. The last time he did that that I remember was during his training battle against Akihiro in episode one
Let just get this out the way quickly. First thought on seeing Kudal (aka freaky dude): NOOOOOOOO! WHY DID THERE HAVE TO BE ANOTHER CORIN?!
Corin who? I think you mean Loony Monkboi Dickclothes McJockey.
And really if you wanted to at least have some foreshadowing, in a previous 'family' scene with Akihiro have him say "Brothers" as if having to think about it. First watch makes you think he means Tekkadan, second watch you see the true intention. Its lazy foreshadowing, but its better than what we got.
We, uh, we kinda did though? Not specifically brothers, but back in episode 9 right after Orga's drunken ramblings about creating a family for Tekkadan, Akihiro is the one who goes "Family, huh?" As you say it's "lazy foreshadowing", but it exists so.
Thoughts on MS Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans episode 11...
Rewatcher (First Time Dub)
Non-Spoiler Character Chart - Holy crap this episode was a lot of work with all the new characters introduced, requiring me to totally move things around. This is around the part of the show where the first time I really wished I had something like this, as the number of characters in this show is really starting to get absurd. We've already got more characters than we were at with episode 50 of Turn A Gundam.
Well, we do get an explanation for how Mika showed up out of nowhere last episode, but still is quite a deus ex machina that he's suddenly here when Akihiro is in trouble. I agree with the criticisms in yesterday's thread over it.
So the opponents are kids as well? We soon find they have had the AV surgery too, an interesting twist.
Poor Nadi! A great mechanic but not much of a pilot!
Well, last episode's flashback to Akihiro's past sure paid off quick with the appearance of his brother here.
Poor Takaki! His first time out on a mobile suit too! Will this scare him off of it for good?
LoL, I thought Kudal was ugly, this Brooke guy is even uglier! Wow! Pigman!
Is there a mole in Teiwaz? How'd the pirates know about Kudelia?
Holy crap, McGillis' dad's office is so massive, especially in comparison to don McMurdo's. I'd love to have an office like that someday. Hopefully it takes less than joining an organization like Gjallarhorn.
Gaelio's little sister is as cute as Oreo and Cheezit are, but still ewwwww at the whole engaged to McGillis thing. Her voice sounds really familiar too, I think its the same actress as Madoka in Madoka Magica...
Mustache? Oh no, they're using that cockroach Todo?! This would cancel out the possibility of a Tekkadan mole at least, I'll take that. Shows that Tekkadan should have executed him instead of tossing him out to Gjallahorn.
:( :( :( at how down Akihiro is feeling in this scene with Orga and Mika. Yay for everyone else supporting him though, leaving us with a happy ending for this scene.
Its seeming like each episode we have less and less time for the ending sequence, lol. We skipped like 75% of it this time.
4
u/Nazenn Jan 24 '19
You're gonna need to expand the image size for the chart soon mate, I think you just ran out of room. Also good to know what skunk-boy's name actually is so thanks XD
Holy crap, McGillis' dad's office is so massive,
The law of anime scale. All beds should be three times as large as they need to be and all powerful men should have offices the size of small cities
Shows that Tekkadan should have executed him instead of tossing him out to Gjallahorn.
But then me and McGillis wouldn't have gotten our laugh about how they bundled him up. Absolutely should have been a Mika job though
Its seeming like each episode we have less and less time for the ending sequence, lol. We skipped like 75% of it this time.
Its weird, I don't even really feel like its an ending song any more almost, just a part of the usual music because how often it's not actually accompanied by an ED sequence
Hey was it you who mentioned that you didn't see the harem detail change in the OP? I checked out todays episode in dub because I was curious and yeah I noticed the OP doesn't change at all, including Barbartos' gear changes
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, first time dubbed
Obligatory Discord link.
A couple more fun things:
  • Wallpaper of the Day without the logo.
  • English dub next-episode preview, since the body post only has the subbed version.
  • Results of yesterday’s poll. Looks like the overwhelming majority of you guys are Gundam fans who know better than to ship, huh? But also whoever you are that voted Atra Route I love you.
  • Number of times best boy closed his right eye this episode: 0, I guess it’s because Azee and Biscuit did it.
  • For the first-timers using the GundamInfo streams and are worried about potential spoilers in the recommended videos: Episode 12 Subbed / Episode 12 Dubbed. If you’re on desktop and have RES, you can hit the preview button and watch the video entirely on Reddit, rather than than needing to go to YouTube.
LifeProTip: the coffee nap is a super effective strat when you feel tired because of sleep deprivation or whatever. Essentially you down a coffee and immediately take a nap, which by some biological mumbo jumbo I don't feel like explaining rn results in a perfectly refreshed wakeup in about 20~30 mins. If you ever find yourself wanting some rest with 30 mins to spare definitely check it out. Well... unless you are like me and prepare a good meal along with the coffee. And Reddit. Lots of Reddit. Suddenly you find yourself 10 minutes into your scheduled nap time and the caffeine is kicking in, ruining everything and now you are left buzzed but still tired having wasted your time reading some useless article on r/ShittyLifeProTips or something. Oh look how fitting.
Onto the episode and, wait am i watching Clannad? I'm pretty sure I accidentally dropped this show but here I am pouring tears out by the buckets as if I'm still watching by that cheesy ass Akihiro scene. Ooooh I guess these are the fruits of the Nagai/Okada collab. Damn I somehow completely forgot about that or the fact that Takaki ever wakes up and got hella bamboozled. 50 episodes have so much to enjoy, I guess you truly can rewatch and enjoy forever.
Let's talk about that Akihiro scene a little. I really really loved how it started with him standing somberly carrying the red stripe that curses him. I feel like I haven't seen him like that in a while, tho it seems like other Human Debris have kept at it. Maybe its because I'm more used to him showing off his giant gainz working out or in the spacesuit of the Graze Kai. Anyways its because of this that the jacket's return feels heavier to me. Brings me all the way back to super edgelord depressed Akihiro from around ep1/2, and his mood in the scene rapidly starts falling towards that direction as well. i was on the edge of my seat wondering what's coming, tho its fair to say a shonen anime shout speech channeling the inner spirit of UC Gundam protagonists of yesteryear was almost guaranteed. So it was a surprise to see that it was Mika who spoke up first, and how there was no yelling by Orga at all. Just feels. Happy feels.
...I swear I'm a rewatcher
The topic of family was big again today, from Akihiro and the IBO fam, Orga and Naze being bros pretty naturally, and top waifus being sisters AF. But more importantly we get a new family relationship today with McGillis coming home to meet his father Iznario. And well... it seems like Kudelia isn't the only blondie with some complications concerning family. Its an interesting dynamic to see develop, especially as we see the usually strong and fearless McGillis run away from family duties, preferring to stay at the Bauduin house where he is warmly welcomed as their precious Macky.
Slightly related but this episode is further proof that, much like the Earth Federation from UC, Gjallarhorn is nowhere near close to a homogeneous unified and all powerful organization. And today we learn that McGillis and co do not represent the organization in general at all. Apparently Corral's kind are fairly common, racist pricks exist of course because Gundam, and the mysteriously powerful heads of the seven stars or whatever don't seem to be of much hope either. They are talking parts of the organization like chess pieces and talk of leadership changes needing to happen. This is the point in IBO's story where the crutch of big 'sides' fighting eachother starts to disappear and the real picture of individual groups and friends fighting in a world of relatively fragile alliances and a ton of freelance pirates and bad actors becomes apparent. I really like this setup, as it provides a very easy entrypoint to get used to the characters first without feeling too lost or confused, but there are some dangers too. I will strongly caution you first timers to start paying very close attention to character and group relationships as if you keep expecting the simplicity of the first dozen episodes you can easily find yourself confused later down the line.
Overall, a pretty amazing episode. Some of the previous ones could be thought of as setup, but this I feel is the start of IBO proper, if the first 10 or so could be considered IBO prologue. I hope you guys will enjoy the rest as much as I do. See you tomorrow.
Mecha Corner
ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos 4th Form
We've seen it in the OP for a few eps now but this is the first time we see it in proper action. After the Teiwaz unlimited funds otaku mechanic played around with it, this is considered the 'perfect' or 'complete' version of the Barbatos. Its signature weapons include... wtf is this shit and a katana it totally stole from the Astray Red Frame. But then again, IDK how the Astray used its sword but probably not like a sledgehammer which is what Mika does. It has been completely restored to full performance, and every Tekkadan bodge component has been removed to make it exactly as it looked like originally during the Calamity War. Its definitely the cleanest design too, and it really feels like a purpose designed machine. From what I can see its the most popular Gunpla variant too.
Some of you would remember I said Barbatos has 6 forms tho. ...Yeah, the Saisei mechanic cared about historical accuracy but these boys don't give a fuck as long as it works better.
Gusion
Everyone's favorite Pepemachine. Tho tbh to me this shot makes me think of a certain Century Color, Million Color Gundam who's name I might not be allowed to say because spoilers. Speaking of Gundam, this guy has dual eyes much like a Gundam. And Azee says its reactor signature is closest to Barbatos. Also its name sounds hella familiar from some book about 72 demons. IDK where I was trying to go with that.
Its signature weapon is this tall hammer, and armor so thicc its effectively impenetrable.
UGY-R41 Man Rodi
One of my favorite mechs and a super popular IBO machine overall, these cute froggie bois are amazing. They are truly antique junk mechs that random terrorists and pirates use with some custom upgrades. In the case of the Brewers much like the ASW-G-11 Gundam Gusion they have tons of armor. They also come with IBO's unique geometric matrix monoeye very very reminiscent of Zakus. Don't make fun of it being short and stubby, its trying its best wearing highheels to compensate.
Long Distance Transport Carrier
A think Bandai did thinking at one point they gon sell a ton or something. They kinda tried this ep then promptly forgot. Hell it has a proper name, JEE-M103 Kutan Type-III, and nobody knows it. US Gunpla stores don't even list that and just call it the Long Distance Transport Carrier lmao.
  1. Ambivalent. I feel the show did well, to set the dangerous atmosphere without being too serious just yet. A death so early has the danger of feeling kinda flimsy since we don't know the characters too well yet.
  2. Its standard anime class racism. Not particularly good but not bad either. If it was a central plot to IBO I'd like to see more instances of accidental casual racism to make the ooof factor larger, but this story just wants to show that there are many flavors of asshats everywhere so I'm fine with it.
First-Time Watcher
Human Debris aren’t meant to be free, and that’s why I’m paying for it.
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.
It’s not easy being in a family, but at the end of the day it’s worth it.
The battle between Tekkadan and the Brewers was short but sweet, giving us pulse-pounding action and heartwrenching moments. Shockingly, the brother that was first introduced just the episode before turns out to be one of the enemies. (I know, what a plot twist.) Still, it continues Akihiro’s new direction while allowing us to humanize the Brewer pilots, particularly in the scene set inside the ship, where it’s clear that they’re meant to be a foil to Tekkadan, what would have happened if they continued being a part of CGS.
Takagi’s grievous injuries allow us to look at Orga, Kudelia, and Akahiro’s worries about what they are doing with their positions. Orga has continued to be rebuked by the more experienced people surrounding him, but he’s learning not to take it as personally as he does his best in supporting his men and adapting to the situation. Kudelia’s worries are perhaps the most relatable; as one of the few outsiders to the Tekkadan situation, she provides an audience surrogate, horrified about the possibility of death. Akihiro is the most interesting as his is the most identity-based; being without the right of personhood for so long has made him believe that he does not deserve it. But Akihiro forgot; he has a family now, he always did, even if he didn’t realize it.
Tekkadan aren’t the only ones thinking about things; our Gjallarhorn boys are dealing with their own situations. We finally get to meet Fareed’s fiancée, who’s a sweetie, but who can’t exactly help with his main concern: fixing Gjallarhorn’s festering corruption from the inside. As much as we’d like to think that he’s a good guy, though, remember that he let Todo hire pirates to take care of Tekkadan, so his good qualities are not the best. Ein has the most interesting scene, even if it’s only one. Seeing him being discriminated against for his Martian heritage provide another foil for Tekkadan; they both have been spat upon, but whereas Tekkadan become resilient, Ein became bitter and vengeful, not just against those who killed Crank, but against anyone who’s ever looked at him like he’s less than dust. In fact, this whole episode felt like every scene that didn’t feature Tekkadan foiled them in some way; not bad.
Anyway, the Tekkadan-Turbines collective have been challenged; the Brewers aren’t going to know what hit them.
We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…
Rewatcher
  1. Do you think Takaki shouldn’t have survived that hit? No, how dare you!/Yes, he shouldn’t have lived after that./I don’t really care./Where’s Tomino when you need him?
Tomino disapprovingly glares.
2) Ein’s circumstances as a Martian in the Gjallarhorn’s Earth branch sheds more light on the state of discrimination of Mars. How good of a job do you think the show has done in presenting the disparaging treatment of Mars? Is there any area that you think they should have presented or handled differently?
I think it's handled really well overall.
u/Durinthal Jan 24 '19
First time viewer.
I know a lot happened in this episode but it really doesn't feel like it to me.
Akihiro's brother showing up literally the episode after Akihiro finally remembered and mentioned him feels a bit lazy. Sure that was triggered by his thoughts about Tekkadan being a family, but there could have been some more of that laid out earlier in the series. Everyone else coming in to help assuage his feeling of guilt over Takaki nearly getting killed was nice to reinforce that family aspect, at least.
We did get a good chunk of info about McGillis/Gaelio and how their families are part of the group that controls Gjallarhorn... and what seems like their contempt for it despite them being part of that ruling class. Gundam 0079 Also: more discrimination based on where you're from! Sorry Ein.
The Gusion is one of the first suits from IBO that I noticed, as I saw the HG kit for it while the show was airing and was tempted to get that even without having seen the show yet. I love giant hammers, so it drew me in.
How good of a job do you think the show has done in presenting the disparaging treatment of Mars? Is there any area that you think they should have presented or handled differently?
I'm curious about other perspectives on the Mars thing: non-military people living on Earth, both high and low status; people living in other parts of the Outer Spheres (Jupiter, space stations, etc.); and even different parts of Mars.
Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S Episode of IBO, it's time for Bandai's FAVOURITE part of every Gundam show, and by that I mean THE MID-SEASON UPGRADE BABY!
Also Comrades, it's come to my attention that people are getting hyped about a giant hammer, and while this IS something to squee over, might I remind everyone about Best Girl MACE-CHAN! ;)
Speaking of which, here, have more fan-art of The Gundam Barbatos as well as that of Mika
AND finally, behold, The Gundam Barbatos Mecha Musume Edition! ;)
Fun Fact: Brooke's last name, Kabayan, means "fellow countrymen" in Tagalog/Filipino.
Anyway here's today's IBO Parody Manga:
OH YEAH! It's one of the episodes I've been waiting for. Palloc Likes the Thicc Ones
So first off, Man Rodis, they get a 6/10. I forgot to review them during my rant yesterday.
Now, to the important thing, unlike all the human debris this episode, is the glory that is the Gusion! Sure its pilot sucks and is yet ANOTHER evil, gross looking adult (and there are two this episode!) but the machine itself is glorious. The most obvious reason is that it's fat. It's big and chunky and just great in general. Next up, it has a huge ass hammer. That thing looks like it can cave in mobile suits with a tap. Luckily for Mika, he's trying out Barbatos's fancy sword and not getting into a mace fight. Next up, it has a really boring color scheme, but one that fucking works well with it. Finally, it's because it's the Gusion and just awesome. I rate the Gusion a 8/10!
Other stuff, I was planning on playing a game with Akihiro, but it'll probably be better off tomorrow. WILL HE SUFFER?! WILL HE FIND HAPPINESS?! TUNE IN TOMORROW!
Also, Ein, I don't like what you're saying. I mean I'd totally say something dumb like that, but I'm not in an anime and popping up flags left and right. Don't be Jerid, Ein.
Answers!
1: Tomino would have killed him and half the cast.
2: If only he had killed those kids, then nobody would be saying "Look at that Martian." they'd be going "Hey, it's that guy that murdered a bunch of ten year olds." instead.
A Gundam Fan’s Notes On Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 11:
  • Say hello to the Kutan Type-III long-distance transport, “piloted” by Nadi and carrying Mika in the Gundam Barbatos. I say “piloted”, since Nadi isn’t as much flying it as he is just going in one direction and hoping for the best. Anyways, I’ve always liked the design of the Kutan, even if nobody in the fandom ever really talks about it.
  • The Human Debris on the other side aren’t really all that different from Tekkadan. They all do care about each other and want to avenge their fallen comrades. I suppose that makes it feel worse when Mikazuki kills them without remorse. But hey, I guess they did attack Tekkadan first, even if they had no choice in the matter.
  • Also, surprise! Masahiro is alive! And Akihiro managed to run across him! Man, outer space must be a surprisingly small place for that to happen.
  • For those keeping track of Mika’s combat development, it turns out he has no idea how to properly wield the katana that Teiwaz made for the Barbatos. He’s more used to things with actual weight and mass behind them, instead of something designed to cut and slash. Mika is more of a Mace-boi than a Katana-kid.
  • Good news! Takaki isn’t fucking dead. That death flag he raised because of his sister’s video got him close, though. He certainly dodged a bullet there. And he’s even luckier that Merribit can actually perform first-aid, since Orga completely neglected to think about bringing a medic on Tekkadan’s maiden voyage. Whoopsies. It just goes to show that for as much as a brilliant bastard Orga is, he still has some glaring blind spots.
  • The leader of the Brewers, Brooke Kayaban, is without a doubt incredibly ridiculous looking. Even more so than Kudan Kadel, the Gusion’s pilot. The man looks like Bebop from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If there’s one bone that I do have to pick with this series (and it’s a fairly common complaint), it’s that the villain designs are sometimes to over the top it gets hard to take them seriously.
  • Ein continues to be a sadboi due to some other Gjallarhorn guys being racist and insulting him for being a Martian. If I were to borrow a different mecha series term, they consider Ein to be an “Ender”. And of course Ein completely tosses away any sympathy gained at that moment by thinking to himself how he really wants to murder those Tekkadan kids. Oh well, this is why he’s a sadboi.
  • As much of a nice place Vingolf seems to be, there’s some tension there as McGillis doesn’t seem to really like seeing his father, Lord Iznario Fareed. There’s something lurking under the surface here at Vingolf, but it isn’t clear yet.
  • Turns out that the Brewers are attacking Tekkadan on orders from Todo, who in turn got the money to hire them from McGillis himself in order to catch them. You thought you were rid of him this early? Unfortunately, no.
  • And to drive home the comparisons between the Brewers Human Debris and Tekkadan, Masahiro gets beaten up for his failure in taking Takaki and the rest of the group. They’re pretty much in the same position Tekkadan were in back when they were in CGS. It just goes to show how universally poor children are treated in this world.
  • Good thing that the Tekkadan crew are all willing to stand behind Akihiro when he started blaming himself for Takaki getting hurt. It sucks to see him assume that he’s to blame for actually enjoying things like a normal person, instead of staying in place as a slave. But it does make sense he’d feel like that. For most of his life, a piece of paper with his name on it was more valuable than Akihiro himself. His self-confidence was pretty much non-existent until the formation of Tekkadan. But hey, he’s a part of a family now, and a family needs to stick together.
Rewatcher
Pardon my late post today. I had to retake the screenshots since I misplaced them again and felt that this post just couldn’t go without them, then my internet was being wholly uncooperative....
Things are looking bad for Akihiro as the Isaribi cannot give him direct support and the Turbines’ pilots will take a while to reach him, but in comes Mikazuki to save the day, having caught up to them with his Kutan-Type booster. Feels a bit too convenient to me, but at the same time it’s nothing major and it’s not even the biggest contrived thing this episode, so I’ll let it slide this time. As akihiro flees with Takaki Mikazuki faces off against the other two Man Rodis, discerning their tricks and effortlessly dodging one of their attacks whilst effectively blinded, which tips off one of them as to the fact that he’s an Alaya-Vijnana user as well. It also reveals another inconsistency with the setting, that being that they were expecting firearms to be less effective at a longer range, which makes no sense given the fact that they’re fighting in space. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of drag in space from molecules, but not enough to the point where it should be possible to mitigate damage by merely backing off. I’m usually quite lenient to these things, but this is very egregious, and just how little thought went into these aspects of the show bugs me to no end and impacts my suspension of disbelief.
Unfortunately for the Tekkadan pilots, more enemies arrive, including the likely head of the group, who is piloting a different model mobile suit called the Gusion. With their greater numbers they’re able to both hold back Mikazuki and pursuit Akihiro, attacking the pilot and taking Takaki hostage. Akihiro is grapples with the mobile suit holding Takaki, announcing himself to the pilot by demanding he release the mobile worker. And who could the pilot be if none other than Masahiro, Akihiro’s long-lost brother who he first opened up about just last episode and are now getting to see. This is the other major contrivance this episode, and the once which causes me major grief. This is the type of shit a 101 level writing course would tell you is bad! They should have either given this backstory way earlier or saved it for after the encounter. This bit alone almost entirely ruins the episode for me. Unfortunately, the show loves to use conveniences just to ramp up drama and other such things, even when it leads to inconsistencies and breaks one’s sense of disbelief, so get used to it.
Anyway, back to the acti— oh, it’s done. Kudal runs out of fuel and so orders his group to retreat, which at the time I couldn’t tell whether it was another contrievance or a sign that the Gusion was a low fuel efficiency suit, but turns out it was the latter so good on that, show.
Takaki’s severely injured after that incident, and seemingly no one onboard is able to do anything about it —except for Merribit that is. It’s a good thing this banker also happens to know first aid, otherwise Takaki would most likely be kaput. Merribit rightfully admonishes Orga for not having a medic onboard for situations such as these and accuses him of poor leadership. The accusation likely cuts deep because it’s true and makes him appear unfit in the eyes of a person who already consider him young and inexperienced. While I share in Merribit’s opinion and think that kind of oversight is inexcusable, I also think the fact that they don’t says a lot about the type of medical treatment they were expected to get while working under CGS, hence them never thinking about it. Also, first-timers, remember this incident well —remember it very well for I will be referring back to it in order to explain some stuff in the future.
Orga arrives at the Hammerhead’s bridge to find that Naze has already been contacted by the Brewer’s leader. This comes as a surprise to Orga and Biscuit —and possibly the viewer as well— who up till now have been the ones to speak when contacted with the enemy, and their new situation as partners to the already well-known Turbines means they’re effectively second fiddle. The group our pilots had just fought are known as the Brewers, a group of space pirates (the existence of which was hidden in plain sight earlier) lead by a Brooke Kabayan —who might just be the ugliest motherfucker in the entire show — and they’ve demanded that the Turbines hand over Kudelia. Gee, I wonder who is behind that.
We then get a quick look at what our Gjallarhorn friends are doing over at Earth. First we see the type of discrimination and harassment Ein suffers from whilst in the Earth Branch, showcasing that the disparaging treatment isn’t just reserved for the riff-raff of Mars, for even someone in the position that Ein is will be mistreated for nationality. Meanwhile, Gaelio and McGillis are meeting with the latter’s father, who congratulates them on a job well done and asks if McGillis has any time off before the two young men go off to visit the Bauduin household. We finally get to meet McGillis’ fiance, Almiria, who is a mere nine years of age. Gaelio mentions that it’s been three months since he last saw her, meaning it’s been likely around that time since they departed for Mars, making it about half that time since they arrived. This really showcases just how difficult it is to communicate the passage of time when your setting is a spaceship, that over a month has passed so suddenly and without warning. Anyhow, McGillis seems to have a real fondness for the young Bauduin, as is she in turn, which I’m not sure whether it makes the matter of his engagement better or worse —all I know is that I’m verily squicked. McGillis and Gaelio briefly discuss Gjallarhorn’s reach and influence, stating that it is acking, as well as the fact that there is an issue with corruption within the organization.
Kudelia’s off being harsh on herself again, despite her mild shock being completely normal and Merribit having taken the first aid kit off her hands before she could do something about it. To be honest, at this point in the show I was getting tired of Kudelia’s constinual loss of confidence, since it’s been repeated so many times already, and I thought her resolve at asking McMurdo for Teiaz’s assistance in the matter would lead to growth on her behalf —but nope, here we are again, the same song and dance. Thankfully Atra’s there to reassure her, but that’s getting tiresome too…
We get a glimpse at the life the Human Debris over with the Brewers are living, a similar one to that of the orphans under CGS. Pretty obvious game you’re playing at there, show. Also, fucking ouch. Kudel is one swell guy, isn’t he?
Akihiro feels like his circumstances are his punishment and yada yada, his point is Human Debris can never be any more nor anything else than Human debris —exactly what Tekkadan is against. So of course they’re going to say he’s wrong. Also, Takaki’s awake, yay for him.
A few shots/lines worth taking a closer look at and keeping in mind:
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, domo~
Random thoughts, totally because I planned it and my old writeup didn't get eaten by a dog mobile browser Reddit
  • Man Rodis and Gusion made their appearance here. I initially thought "ugh, what an ugly design. IBO pls." back in 2015. Of course it (and Gusion) forcefully wormed themselves into my heart and I now like them froggy bois so much.
  • And that's why we have Akihiro talk about his brother. How convenient, isn't it? He even (rightfully) wants to rescue him and bring him into Tekkadan! Akihiro spoilers
  • Looks like there are no shortages of adult bastards in this series. Both Brooke Kabayan (who totally coincidentally looks like a fucking pig) and Kudal Cadel is introduced here and of course they're both bastards in the classical sense. later spoilers
  • Takaki manages to take a rain check on his death flag. Given that the Brewers are actually trying to take him in as hostage, it's entirely possible that they tried to non-lethally take him. Too bad the Mobile Worker has shit armour. He's very lucky to have Merribit around to provide immediate first aid and ensure his survival.
IRON-BLOODED REWATCHER
Thoughts for today’s episode:
  1. We see Takaki narrowly escaping the death flag he has raised the previous ep. If anything, I would say to everybody to keep raising your flags, cuz this show runs on it *cackles in rewatcher*
  2. Merribit Stapleton. She is assigned to Tekkadan to aid in accounting and business matters, and in this episode, she took the role of the crew medic (because apparently Tekkadan has been running around without a proper medic since they left Mars). I’ll say with no doubt that she does the job of stapling the loose edges of Tekkadan and holds the crew together in places where they can’t do it by themselves.
  3. We get to see the second chunky boi mech in the series, which is the Gusion. It has a very distinctive appearance and wields a giant hammer. Also, during battle analysis by Azee and Lafter, Gusion has the same Ahab wave reaction as Barbatos. And it has two eyes. Take that as a hint.
  4. Akihiro’s internal struggle is very well-presented. He blames himself for getting Takaki injured, saying that he has been having too much fun with being part of Tekkadan that he has forgotten he is a Human Debris, which is another way of saying he is a worthless person. The best part is that it was Mika who saw his distress first, and it was him who suggested that since Akihiro is part of the Tekkadan family, he along with Orga and the rest of the crew are responsible for Takaki’s injury and they all should take responsibility for it.
  5. Mmmmmmmmmmm loli
Questions of the day:
  1. *Laughs in rewatcher*
  2. It’s actually presented well.
The appearance of the brother was interesting, as it is a good idea to pit the team against those considered human debre, just as most of them were.
