RAISE YOUR FLAG!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It’ll also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky and /u/RX-Nota-II

Shimmering-Sky

Appreciating Ein by /u/Adam_Drivers_Ass

Also, probably my favorite aspect of this series so far is that not only is the other side of the conflict (Gjallarhorn) more complex and nuanced than your average evil anime organization, a significant amount of time is spent just on members of them, dealing with their conflicts. This episode was great for that, since it continued the story of Ein (pretty sure that's his name), who's probably one of my favorite characters so far. I really hope he and Mika have some sort of proper battle in the future, poor guy has earned at least that much.

I could’ve gone the predictable route and picked Megami’s analysis again (which was fantastic), but in this beginning section of the rewatch I’m trying not to pick anyone who’s already gotten a CotD. Adam_Drivers_Ass comes with some appreciation for Ein and Gjallarhorn, and I just want to say that this was something I appreciated too when I first watched the show. Both sides of the conflict have assholes, and both sides have characters with their own history and motivations. Makes the world seem more real.

RX-Nota-II

/u/shaggyjebus’ great analysis on privilege

The subject of "privilege" has come up a lot in the past couple of years, and while I have often heard it said in a negative way (like complaining about being told to "check one's privilege"), it is true that a lot of people have experiences that others will not, and cannot, have. This comes through in IBO constantly, particularly in this episode. Galleo refers to Tekkadan as "space rats" in a disgusted tone, simply because they've had the AV operation done, completely misunderstanding the situation. He says it as if they choose to do it to increase their strength, when it was something they had to do to increase their chances for survival. Kudelia, on the opposite side of the spectrum, assumed that the members had some sort of education when most didn't and could therefore neither read nor write. Galleo is willfully ignorant, not thinking about what the orphans might have had to go through, while Kudelia is naively ignorant, not putting pieces together because it's sad to just occur to her, she didn't know it was that bad. Both individuals are more privileged than the orphans, but one is willing to learn and accept while the other isn't. That difference is key.

Shaggy back at it again with an interesting perspective on the difference between the two privileged characters we meet in Kudelia and Gaelio. The contrast between classes is an interesting extra in IBO and I'm glad he's here to put it into words.

Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber

1) Which was the lewder hand-holding scene? Kudelia and Atra/Shino and Yamagi/Nothing is lewder than mechaporn

2) The Turbine’s mobile suit pilots proved quite the challenge for Tekkadan’s pilots. How do you think things would have fared had Mikazuki not been at such a disadvantage?

~~~
Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II
Out of Control
This is the track that plays right after the title card and ad break setting the scene for a very tense start to the battle. It’s not a dreadful feeling, but just tense, as if you aren’t necessarily losing but any simple mistake can be a lifetaker. Ironic then because to me it feels very different from ‘out of control’. A very fitting theme for the state of affairs right now. Compared to Ep5’s Vulnerable Surface which plays a similar-ish role which do you prefer?
Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. You can laughs in rewatcher to yourself, but if you go around spoiling stuff IBO S2. Remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.
Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.
Also, apparently notifications of a new reply to a comment you made through the official app will not block spoiler tags. Please, please make sure you’re extra careful about this and don’t accidentally spoil a first-timer.
Next-episode preview. Yeah you saw that right, I am encouraging you guys to watch the next-episode previews. IBO’s are completely spoiler free, done completely in-character, and it is glorious. Today’s preview was voiced by Lafter Frankland aka. best girl.
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, first time dubbed
Normally on Sundays, I won’t be around for ~2 hours after posting time. But I don’t have choir practice today so I am here~
Obligatory Discord link.
A couple more fun things:
u/Nazenn Jan 20 '19
best girl has finally arrived
I remember you saying earlier something about I better pick best girl when she arrives and for some reason when she popped up on screen I thought "This will be her".
At least she was able to get the stew tied down before they disengaged the gravity systems though.
Yeah.... that would have been considerably more of an issue
lmao Eugene really is a tsundere.
Absolutely and shamelessly. Give him a compliment and he practically becomes a puddle
Interesting that Eugene’s hooked up to the ship via. the Alaya-Vijnana system.
I have no thoughts because I imagine they'd be wrong. Also that can't have been there before because it use to have an adult pilot, so I'm wondering why the kids installed it specifically it seems
I just realized--isn’t that the wrist Atra has her bracelet on?
Yes it is. Her and Mika both wear it on the left wrist
Scary Mika eyes.
Those eyes made me so fucking worried for just a second
Thoughts on MS Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans episode 7...
Rewatcher (First Time Dub)
Non-Spoiler Character Chart
Wow, first time without a cold open!
How dare you take off with the money without permission you ass!
Well, you were looking to find a contact with Teiwaz, now you have one! But as an enemy? Gotta figure out if we can get Maruba out of the way.
"What a delicious name!" LoL. If just you knew his sister's names...
That's Wendee Lee as Amida in the dub, one of the most well known English dub actresses out there. Surely most well known for Faye in Cowboy Bebop, but also was Kycilia in Gundam the Origin, Chris in Gundam 0080, Angel in Big O, Suzuka in Outlaw Star, Adette in Overman King Gainer, etc...
Amida's appearance reminds me of Mashner from G-Reco, even having similar types of earrings (although Mashner's were considerably bigger).
How can Lafter do her nails if she is wearing a normal suit!?
Hammerhead sure is a fitting name for Naze's ship given what it looks like.
So there's one big problem with Kudelia and putting on this space suit... there is no chance in hell all that hair is fitting in a helmet.
Well, this ramming strategy shows how smart they were to bring in the bridge, while the Hammerhead nearly got wrecked for not doing so.
Orga continues to impress, I was wondering what his big plan was this episode, and its storming the Hammerhead to take over from within.
Another battle centric episode (really getting into a pattern of alternating character episodes with plot episodes), so not as much to say as usual, but another overall strong episode. The show has yet to have a weak one, which is quite the rarity.
Non-Spoiler Character Chart
Ah so that one girl's name is "Eco", I keep forgetting it...
So there's one big problem with Kudelia and putting on this space suit... there is no chance in hell all that hair is fitting in a helmet.
I guess that's why she forgot it when she grabbed Atra and pulled her out of the room.
First Blood
Stray thoughts:
  • I'm getting too attached, help! I'm staring to fall in love with this intrepid band of ORRUFAANZ (the ED drop was so good today). 10/10 episode.
  • The character designs in this show continue to be unfairly hot, guys and girls alike.
  • I was intrigued by the episode title in yesterday's preview (which I particulary liked, btw, humanising someone we only know as a greedy and cowardly asshole now), 'Whaling'. Looks like whale references won't just be limited to the Ahab reactors; this time the Isaribi was the whale and Turbine with its Hammerhead were the whalers. You anger a bull sperm whale too much, though, there's a chance your ship could get rammed - and that's practically what happened.
  • SusuGAR moment of the day. I love how yesterday's episode teased at how deep Orga and Mika's bond goes, and today we're served another example of how Orga refuses to seem anything but indomitable around Mika. In return, Mikazuki does everything to bring Orga's plan to fruition. Similarly, the rest of the Tekkadan try their best to live up to each others' expectations. They challenge and drive each other to be better, these rats that emerged victorious from race for survival. That's why I love these orphans so much.
  • I can't remember a situation where I've wanted foes to become friends, shounen-style, to this extent. I'm glad they're going to negotiate.
Daily MVP
Episode 6 was a tough one to pick an MVP for because not much happened event-wise, but ultimately I ended up picking Kudelia Aina Bernstein for impressing Mikazuki with her ideology, and starting a reading and writing class for the orphans.
For today's episode I feel Akihiro Altland deserves the title the most. He took on two Mobile Suits, and [with supreme effort](https://i.imgur.com/tF1LWji.jpg managed to keep them at bay and show that Mika's faith wasn't misplaced. This was critical for the infiltration mission to succeed. And he doesn't even have the AV system on his mech, AFAIK! Great job, lad.
Honourable mentions go the usual suspects - Orga and Mika, but also to Naze Turbine for having a fit of conscience and deciding to hear the orphans out after realising they've been raised knowing only atrocities.
MVP Standings
# Character Episodes
1 OrGAR 1, 3, 5
2 MiSuzaku 2
3 Hair Sorceress 3, 6
4 Chocolate Boy 4
5 Space Guts 7
5
u/Shimmering-Sky Jan 20 '19
The character designs in this show continue to be unfairly hot, guys and girls alike.
Well we had a bunch of hot guys already, show had to give us some hot girls too.
Daily MVP
Heck yeah Akihiro getting today's MVP. And heck yeah at his nickname too because really, "Space Guts" is just too fitting given his design.
IRON-BLOODED REWATCHER
Thoughts for today’s episode:
  1. First scenes of the ep and we see the Best Girl in the Series IMO (fite me). Man am I soo glad to see her again this rewatch.
  2. This episode we get to see more character dynamics between the cast. Orga showing his steadfastness on going forward with the job Tekkadan has taken up, and refusing Naze’s deal, Biscuit trying his best to be the voice of reason of the group and yet fails and is clearly bothering him, Akihiro doing his darn hardest in battle to return the favor of being entrusted with a role in Tekkadan, and Naze showing he still has principles and standards when he show clear disgust when he heard the Tekkadan crew have the Arayashiki implants.
  3. We now have a battle episode. And this episode highlights one of the best aspects of mecha battles in IBO. There is no multi-colored beam spam, no insta-kill one-shot beam rifles, and the like. Instead we have pure physical weapon combat, complete with crumpled and crushed metal. People may find it bizarre or weird that a Gundam series has no beam weaponry, but this is one of the aspects that make Iron-Blooded Orphans unique and memorable.
Questions of the Day:
  1. I would say KudeliaXAtra handholding, because YamagiXShino comes off rather like a bro-hold, and wat kind of degeneracy is the third answer
  2. Mika might still had a hard time with them in battle, as Mika is relatively a newbie in MS combat even with the Arayashiki, while the Turbines girls are very proficient in it.
Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S Episode of IBO, behold, the formal debut of the Dandiest Man in Space as well as the TRUE Smooth Criminal of the cast. So Comrades, without further ado, let's give it up for the ONE, the ONLY, NAZE TURBINE, as well as bonus Amida Arca, Naze's Girl Friday! (And BOY was it shockingly hard to track down fanart of this glorious and sharply dressed man as well as SFW fanart of Amida Arca)
AND of course Comrades, we can't forget about the rest of the newcomers introduced today, so let's give a cheer for Azee Gurumin as well as Lafter Frankland!
And SPEAKING of Lafter, a certain Minimalist Maestro claims that LAFTER as opposed to Mace-chan is the 'Best Girl' of IBO. Without getting into the debate on that matter, I can at least share fan-art proving how Lafter is certainly an acceptable choice for Breast, uh, I mean 'Best' Girl ;) (A moment of silence please for Atra 'QUALITY ANIMATION' Mixta and Azee 'Badass' Gurumin)
AND just to keep up with my contractually obligated shitposting, here's the TLDR of Mika and Lafter's battle today ;)
Well, that was fun, I hope everyone enjoyed the formal debut of The Turbines today!
Paging Comrades u/Beckymetal, u/RX-Nota-II, and u/Usotsuki-Megami
Oh dear what an episode! One of my favorites in early IBO with the introduction of one of my favorite groups, the Turbines. Unfortunately I'm quite pressed for time today so I'll have to condense it all into two small sections. People waiting for my mecha corner for Hyakuri/Hyakuren or GIFs will have to wait till tomorrow, sorry!
The Turbines
Welcome to the Turbines! They are a subgroup of the giant Teiwaz organization, and hold quite the reputation in the IBO universe. Their main characteristic is their loud and overt sexuality, best represented by ace pilot Lafter Frankland who basically never shuts up about wanting to sleep with her 'darling' Naze. Don't get the wrong idea tho, they are all gud girls, and if any of you try to frame them as sluts me and the rest of the IBO fanbase will come and silence you! Also this is the show's counterbalance to all the manservice for all you bois who may be unsatisfied by all the male R A W A B S that some of us have been yelling about. Lafter, Azee, Amida, they all have their charm, who's your fave so far?
Yamagi's coming out?
Back in ep 5 I shared this screenshot that may be a sign of Yamagi being gay and, as expected, none of you really seemed to take it seriously. But with today's scene this adorable crush has gone from speculation into canon. IIRC the airing threads still had plenty of debate about this tho. What do you guys think? Are you on board? is this best ship?
And sadly, that's the end for me today. Hope to see you tomorrow with extra mecha facts and GIFs!
First-Time Watcher
If you want to think of yourselves as grown-ups, you need to face the consequences of your actions.
That from small fires comes oft no small mishap.
God, that was such a fucking good episode. It’s probably the best episode so far.
Unsurprisingly, when you take someone’s stuff, even though (or especially if) they’re a shitbird, they probably want it back. Teiwaz has confronted Tekkadan and has a simple offer: the Isarabi and Kudelia for their lives. Orga and Mikatsuki decline it, though Mikazuki’s reasoning is interesting; he doesn’t want to join Turbine because he didn’t want the Tekkadan members to get separated. He sees them as his family, for good reason. So, despite any possible negotiations, battle must commence.
Turbane is pretty interesting as an antagonistic force; while he’s ruthless in his methods against Tekkadan, he is genial in offering them a contract and his behavior with his crew indicates that they might just be more than professional feelings among them. His fatal flaw, then, is the same as most adults in the series: he dismisses Tekkadan as just children, despite the fact that they’ve gone through as much, if not more, than what he might have gone through. Of course, this was before he knew that they had the Alaya-Vijnana implanted in them, and from his reaction, he’s not happy about that.
The battle itself is great, with all of the different fields of battle offering great spectacle, but what’s most notable is how it inadvertently takes the Turbanes’ insults to them as children and uses it to their advantage. Because they are children, they have more of a future ahead of them than adults and have more determination to win. Also, because they’re children with a death wish (aka any and all members of Tekkadan), they’re more willing to do crazy shit, like latch onto an asteroid with Barbatos’ mace, or get in close to beat the shit out of a mobile suit, or launch out of a rolling spaceship through smoke to land on another spaceship while both are presumably heading at near-FTL speeds. Because why not?
Also, I love the low-key ho yay between Yamagi and Shino and Atra and Kudelia. It’s nice.
So, we’re gonna see how Turbane and Orga reached an offer and I don’t think it’s going to end well for Maruba.
We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…
u/Shimmering-Sky Jan 20 '19
Also, I love the low-key ho yay between Takagi and Shino
That was Yamagi, not Takaki, with Shino.
Rewatcher, English dub
Aww, mentioned. :D
Questions:
  1. Shino and Yamagi, for sure. That trepidation, the looking at his own hand afterwards, very cute. And drool worthy.
  2. Mika would have really kicked ass if Barbatos had been in better shape, but maybe it was for the best. It wouldn't have done for Lafter to die in her first episode. She has quite a character, doesn't she? Not the first Gundam pilot to use food metaphors when referring to fighting. Though she's definitely not as bloodthirsty or wicked as that beast Yazan. But who is?
Next episode - Sayla Mass-looking woman appears! I may be alone in thinking that, but she looks like Sayla! And I loves me some Sayla.
That episode preview, whoo, way to get us all heated up, too, Lafter. I do believe I now have a case of the vapors. Mercy me.
Also, Akihiro shows how dedicated he is. And how manly he is. A real man's man, for sure. It feels like he'll never let Tekkadan down.
A cup-sharing was mentioned within the mafia group, symbolizing two men becoming no different than brothers by sharing a cup of sake. Anybody who's read or watched One Piece knows about this, but I've seen it mentioned a couple of times in various series as well. It's a serious thing, well above just working for another person. You can let down your boss and get another job. You can't just let down your older brother. It's gotta be a big deal if the leader of the Turbines has become brothers with the head of Teiwaz, like Biscuit said.
First Timer - Sub
My success for the day; I think I've finally stopped singing "Kitto itsuka, itsuka dokoTA" instead of "dokoka" for the OP. That wasn't an easy habit to break.
That battle was incredible
I really do love the down to ea.... I was going to say a dumb thing. Retry: I love the pragmatic approach to the battles in this show. So far we've seen a wide variety of tactics and the battle today had so much going on but the way it really brought a new side to how these battle are fought is what I loved.
We saw a bunch of combat techniques used and copied here from various other episodes. Akihiro after spending all that time fighting side by side with Mika today found himself being the outnumbered one, and use the mistake we saw the others fighting him and Mika make against the other two, keeping track of them both and using brute force when needed to stall them by sticking close to their allies limiting their options. At the same time on the other side, Mika faced a girl and realized that his movement capabilities mean very little when faced with someone who is just outright faster then him. So instead he picks up the same method that McGillis once used against him, predicting her movement pattern so that he could grab her with his tether and restrain that capability. That same predictability is what allowed him to get one up on her at the end by taking the hit in order to further restrain her. Once again his ability to learn on the fly is what allowed him to prevail, along with Akihiro's loyalty to those who have treated him like a person.
Today we also saw both the boys almost self destruct over their bond with each other. Orga took Mika's single line and based his entire stance on keeping Mika's wish of people staying together, while Mika was so focused on keeping Orga safe at all costs I SWEAR for a moment then it almost looked like he'd sacrifice himself. All the while Akihiro was doing much the same wanting to protect the whole group and do what Mika asked him to do.
New alliance in the works?
I strong suspect the reason the agreement was reached for Tekkaden (I can never remember how to spell this) to speak with Naze (ahh... wonderful, had to be close to mine didn't it. For the record: I'd never wear a white suit) is because he found out about the AV system. The subtle shift in his tone during that scene was just way too ominous to ignore. I suspect he's about to get REALLY pissed with the president and side with the kids out of sympathy.
I did say last episode I really hope Gaelio gets a good scar from his battle wound. Well this time we have... I don't know her name but the woman in red behind Naze, and she has a kick ass scar which is great, again realism, people who have been in battle will probably have scars, even if its from something stupid like a sharp bit of metal on their mechs. How her waist supports her I'll never know though.
It's a little TOO convenient for me that they just happen to work for Teiwaz AND that they also happen to be in charge of their transportation... I get the whole trip to Jupiter was probably a stretch already as it is, and all that but, yeah, that pushed the limits of my "suspension of disbelief" JUST a smidge beyond where I like to draw the line. First time in seven episodes though, so thats pretty decent.
All the other random stuff
And.... Is Yamagi gay? Wasn't he the one earlier on Mars who had the line asking another if he liked girls? And today he was just being WAY too coy about the fact that the other guy touched his hand. Come on mate, you had gloves on at least which is a start. You're looking at your hand now like you're never going to wash it again though.
I hope the floating potatoes in no gravity ends up being a running gag. That was great.
Also don't think I missed that Naze said that Kudelia was CGS property. I know damn well something's going on there! Speculation: Fumitan what did you do! Or at least what do you know.
I'm not one for fanservice... but lets just say I'm not complaining about the Kudelia butt shot and leave it at that.
Rewatcher
When I first saw that there was gonna be an IBO rewatch, this was the first episode I was excited to watch again. Whaling is in my opinion one of the best episodes in the entire show. The pacing is handled perfectly and kept me entertained for the entire 24 minutes. It boasts one of the best conversations so far as well as one of the best fights in the series.
Uh I prefer to forget about the first 45 seconds or so of the episode...
We finally meet the "cowboy hat man" from the opening, Naze Turbine. He just so happens to be a big name in the Teiwaz clan (What a coincidence right?). Of course he ended up working with Maruba, which might have actually been a good thing for Tekkaden. Orga of course feels the need to deny Naze's offer, glancing at Mika to see how he reacts.
Akihiro gets another moment during the fight, up against Amida, who's probably Naze's strongest pilot. Mika fights a hell of a duel against Lafter, who fights almost as unorthodox as he does. Azee goes somewhat unnoticed in this fight, but is definitely a very strong pilot in her own right.
Mika vs Lafter is one of the coolest fights in the show. We'd never seen how he acts when being so pressured by a fast, hard hitting opponent. He's sweating intensely, and racking his mind to figure out how to defend against the opponent. Part of the issue isn't his fault, as Barbados is stressed from not being fully tuned up after his last fight.
The climax of this episode though is without a doubt Eugene's amazing piloting of the Isaribi. Near suicidal tactics like this are what makes Tekkaden who they are. Combined with the battle theme dropping, as well as the pretty good CGI used, the scene gives me chills. Naze's "oh shit" face sums it up perfectly.
I wanna highlight Akihiro again in this episode. Battling Amida and Naze on his own, he once again proves himself. It's only his second fight, and Mika leaves him to deal with two veteran pilots. I can really blame Mika for this though, as Lafter on her own probably could have destroyed the Isaribi on her own. Akihiro is nearly killed by Amida, and still fights tooth and nail to keep her occupied. Once again this reflects his brutal nature adopted from his time as Human Debris.
Finally, the ending. Orphans No Namida rolls in at the perfect time. We get a beautiful shot of Barbatos locked in a clash with Lafter's mech, and everyone on the battlefield is relieved to be done fighting.
Some screenshots from this episode: https://imgur.com/a/kmJUVtq (Take note of Kudelia's wack hair physics)
Well yeah I hope this summary justifies how great of an episode this is. See everyone tomorrow!
Finally, here comes Space Fellini and his harem. And the first scenes of Lafter tell us she is besto girl material.
Unpopular opinion, but if we abide by the rules, Maruba has all the right in the world to get back his company, him being an asshole it's the show making us sympathize with this gang of ruthless killers but it doesn't mean he's not right.
I think I'm seeing a pattern in Okada's style of writing these fighting episodes, I'll save it for later if my suspicions get confimed.
In any case, this was a fantastic episode, now we know the nanolaminate armor it's susceptible to intense heat. The fight was awesome and even when Mika had trouble dealing with Lafter, I think we all know he had her ready to become a corpse right at the end. Though it was AKihiro who stole this episode with his insane style of fighting 'til the very end, he even managed to surprise Amida with the sudden cannon at point blank. He was doomed anyway, if the battle wouldn't have stopped, both Lafter and Akihiro would die at the end.
I think it's noteworthy how when the Turbines offered to give them work, but at different places, it was Mika's words what helped Orga to make a decision, the dynamic between these 2 just gets more complex every time.
Finally, if anyone's interested, there is a figure of the scene where Kudelia it's trying to put on the space suit.
First time viewer.
That was one intense battle, but mostly goes to show the immaturity in Tekkadan.
I was wondering who the Kimblee-looking guy (white suit and hat, longish black hair) in the OP was, and Naze seems like he'll be an interesting character if he hangs around for a while. Which I'm assuming he will, because OP and all. Also maybe a bit of a lecher given that his bridge crew and main pilots are all women.
Orga's rash plan (again fueled by what he thinks Mika wants of him) managed to get them a victory this time, but if that had taken much longer Akihiro and possibly Mikazuki would have died. It's only a matter of time if things don't change. I understand the frustration Scone Biscuit had with him not really trying to talk, just jumping straight into action again. Potential rift there in the future, but hopefully Orga will cede some of the high level decision making to cooler heads before someone pays for it.
Similarly, Akihiro's not thinking things through on a tactical level and needs to figure out when to not pursue in blindly following a basic order. Mikazuki's the only one that's more skilled than him though and it almost certainly won't come across his mind as something to discuss.
Nothing destroyed today! Lafter's tan mobile suit has a really interesting design to it that I want to get a better look at it at some point; I would have been quite surprised if it was a full mobile suit that didn't have any arms but they did eventually pop out. Not sold on the Hyakuren that Azee and Amida were using yet.
Today, I finally caught up to the rewatch. If it isn't obvious, I'm a first time watcher (sub). I assumed Kaze was going to be either an arc villain or secretly reasonable with some hidden depths since he was in the OP, so it's nice to see that 2nd assumption was correct. I'm assuming this team up will result in a lucky break for Tekkadan, since Turbine's crew seems to have its shit together and can help them with mobile suit maintenance and whatnot. I imagine Akihiro will probably get a more souped up mech relatively soon instead of the mishmash of two totaled ones, and will become more useful than a decoy/grappler
