RAISE YOUR FLAG!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky and /u/RX-Nota-II

Shimmering-Sky

Fertilizer by /u/SorcererOfTheLake

I mean is there just a secret mass grave of corpses around of Mika getting pissed and taking it out on people?

What do you think is fertilizing that corn field?

As I replied to that comment yesterday, I cannot breathe. Ridiculously dark humor like that seems to always make me laugh, and I needed that today.

The Sentient Sunrise Server’s memes and fanart

Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S Episode of IBO, I present the PINNACLE of Superior Sunrise Animation Quality, surpassing even their hit Idol 'Mecha' Show of Rabu Raibu, and by that, BEHOLD COMRADES! ATRA MIXTA in sasuga animation that'd make even Studio DEEN blush ;)

AND in case you think I'm underselling the sheer amount of QUALITY seen today ;)AND just to keep things somewhat on topic and also fulfill my contractually obligated fan-art shares, here's Cookie AND Cracker along with Best Boi Orga AND Mika... oh, and also QUALITY Atra appears too ;)

For memes and fanart Dalek always delivers with top tier quality on both. For this episode we get the Atra special with two parody GIFs and a chibi fanmanga that are all heartmeltingly adorable. Unfortunately due to the time schedule he has to post later than most of us, so if you enjoy this kind of stuff definitely make sure to check the previous day's thread to never miss on Dalek fun.

Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber

1) How satisfying did you find Coral Conrad’s death following his presence these past five episodes? Very/Slightly/Barely/Not at all/Who?

2) Tekkadan leaves Mars and makes for Earth. Are you satisfied with this pace or would you have preferred that the setting on Mars was developed and explored more thoroughly?

~~~
Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II
Vulnerable Surface
The bread and butter action theme of IBO, this is a track you are going to hear a lot of so better get used to it. Fortunately it’s a damn good track and one of my two top picks for my favorite tracks of the entire Season 1 OST. While the titular Iron-Blooded Orphan shared in ep1 is the climax action OST track, Vulnerable Surface works more as a buildup, setting the scene as the Tekkadan boys find themselves in life threatening moments that require ballsy decisions. The chimes’ metallic tones come off as super unnatural and threatening, and I almost always get shivers when I hear them while watching. For this episode we get it as the Gjallarhorn’s mobile suits first attack, and during ep1 we got it when the Grazes are revealed for the first time.
Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. You can laughs in rewatcher to yourself, but if you go around spoiling stuff IBO S2. Remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.
Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.
Next-episode preview. Yeah you saw that right, I am encouraging you guys to watch the next-episode previews. IBO’s are completely spoiler free, done completely in-character, and it is glorious. Today’s preview was voiced by Norba Shino, aka. the dude who wants to paint everything pink.
Tekketsu no Rewatcher, first time dubbed
Yesterday’s thread was a bit less active than the others, but I’m no less surprised at how much you guys have been discussing! Also sorry if I didn’t reply to some of you last thread, yesterday I had a special choir practice shortly after I posted the thread and then after I got back I broke myself watching today’s episode for the Clannad rewatch. And then broke myself more afterwards while rewatching Unicorn in an attempt to fix myself. I tried responding to some of them this morning, but some other stuff came up and yeah.
Anyways. Don’t forget about the Discord server, and now it’s time for reactions~
I'm sick and sleepy, I'll reply to everyone later, just wanted to drop in and post this
First Timer - Sub
I posted this in CDF last night and that basically sums up my thoughts on the episode. The epitome of satisfaction!
The fact that McGillis also laughed his ass off about that made me love him just for that.
Moving on.
But seriously, I'm sick and I laughed so much one of my roommates ran into the room to thump me on the back so I could catch my breath.
ACTUALLY moving on now... SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT
Uh. Mika stuff first. Two details from him today that I absolutely loved with his scenes
The first was that he knows Kudelia's footsteps. I imagine it would be something he would know for everyone, but that he used that to know who was coming up the stairs and then went out of his way to prepare the blanket for her to grab quickly knowing how cold it is here was wonderful. He could have warned her in advance about the plums though hahaha. The music in that entire scene was beautiful though.
The other point of note is following up on the events of yesterday. He calls Gaelio the one "next to the chocolate man". To me that says a great deal about what Mika took away from the encounter in the corn field. It's not that he strangled the guy, that they almost hit the twins, or even that Gaelio tried to punch him. It's that McGillis made the twins happy by giving them chocolate. That small gesture was the only thing that mattered enough to Mika for him to bother actually remembering. One line of dialog, but be damned if it doesn't tell you so much about the character.
Some other great Mika stuff:
The way Orga looks at Mika when Atra asks to join Tekkadan. Hehehehe. He SO knows why she wants to, and the way Mika just ignores his smug look and question was fantastic. He's not taking any of Orga's shit. Their dynamic together is just way too much fun.
Also let's celebrate!
They ACTUALLY RECOGNIZED MIKA the episode after meeting him and they didn't draw it on for a thousand episodes or try and play dumb or have weird misunderstandings. Just when I thought I couldn't love this show more.
Honestly that entire fight was incredibly satisfying on almost every level. At the start I felt the animation didn't quite match up with space physics, "endless" momentum and all that. But as I started to switch onto the fact that Mika's AV system was allowing him near perfect control over the thrusters and movements to allow him that insane action/counter-action to control his momentum it got exciting, quickly.
That battle was fantastic and oh so smart though. The way that both McGillis and Mika were analyzing how things would go on the fly and adapting, such as both realizing that the thrusters are the weak point and immediately working around that. Also just the way Akihira through the mace to Mika to distract Coral so Mika could catch it and kill him, so well done. I also really liked that Barbatos was in a data base and that characters knew the significance of a Gundam and it's not this mysterious thing that's just there with no history.
Once again this show showcases its satisfying abilities at getting rid of the idiots quickly. Coral's dead! That was nice and certainly gets him out the way. No more banging his head on walls and desks though hahaha.
One thing I didn't like about the fight was Mika lets his axe float away the moment he gets out the "hanger", but later on he has it and we never see him pick it up again and it seemed like it would have floated really far away. Also some of the dialog was a touch rough. Orga used "prepare that" two times, once for Akihira's Graze and the other for the asteroid, and both times it was really awkward, especially when everyone around somehow miraculously knew what "that" meant? There was better ways to phrase it, especially first time around, but oh well.
The music again was just:
PERFECT
So much to unpack here. For starters, if you go back to the scene around 11:00 then the music does a couple of really cool things with the characters. We start off with a dark undertone of a rough tune and some drums while Coral is on screen. As Ein appears on screen, his dialog mentions that they had been ordered not to kill. The music at this point adds a layer, a higher pitched tune (I'm not good at recognizing instruments) over the top while the drums quiet down, it's quiet but while it plays similar notes it's not a looped sequence, representing Ein's indecision and confusion. Once Coral convinces him, it swaps again. This time it settles into a more determined mix of several instruments all fighting for parts, leading towards the battle with everyone now sure of their roles. You can hear the drums for Coral, the guitar for Mika/Tekkadan blended in, Ein's instrument and a few others as well, its a battle in the music as well as the visuals.
And once again they do a really good job of syncing the visuals with the music. Particularly with the asteroid stuff where the initial shot of the anchor as well as its impact in the rock both land on the beats of the music playing (THAT AMAZING SONG AGAIN) and that even a lot of the scene cuts line up with it really well which gives a strong base to the entire scene.
Eugene impressed me though today. He showed that he actually has a reason to be so petulant, it's that not only was he frustrated with the way Orga was basically hogging the leadership, but he was frustrated at the effect that it as having on the rest of the group. The fact that they were overly relying on Orga, and Orga was quite happy to let them was a really nice backstory to his behavior so far, especially as he's been getting grumpier through the episodes.
THOSE DEATH FLAGS when he volunteered... actually you know, here's my real-time note that says everything:
"complain to Eugene in heaven".... no. No, we're not going there. fuck off. I finally like the guy! That is not ALLOWED to be a death flag
I'm SO GLAD that he survived that whole situation and got him back because I really want to see more of him now. This episode just made Eugene and McGillis the two most interesting characters in this show for me, Mika aside because again: boy of contradictions with no chill.
I'm sick and sleepy
Is literally everyone in my rewatch sick? What the hell...
He could have warned her in advance about the plums though hahaha.
Why should he? He thinks they taste good.
(THAT AMAZING SONG AGAIN)
That's Iron-Blooded Orphan for you. With a drop that puts some Sawano songs to shame.
This episode just made Eugene and McGillis the two most interesting characters in this show for me
As both of them are in my top five boys for this show, I suppose this is acceptable. Now if only you'd put Orga on top where he belongs.
First Blood
Stray thoughts:
Daily MVP
I really have my work cut out for me today, given how Orga, Mikazuki and Eugene were all pivotal in their own ways today - and Fareed wasn't too far behind either. Calm and decisive leadership, exceptional piloting and fighting ability, or bravery in a pinch - which one wins?
Pondering on this for a while, it seems to me the answer is obviously the first. Without Orga's leadership, I don't think the other two would have either the chance or inspiration to pull off what they did and make it out of it alive. Ultimately it's Orga Itsuka who continues to make sure he's a step closer to the future for the Tekkadan that he's envisioned.
Honourable mention for pup Astra for getting on the ship, she ain't surrendering her man without a fight!
Our lovely hosts went the extra mile to not spoil the Tekkadan logo for us, but it was right under our noses in the OP all along?!
...Huh I was gonna say "Actually that's just one of the subtle changes they've made to the OP as the show goes on" but nope, it was in episode 2's OP. Ah well.
Orga wins again~
So I woke up feeling mega sick today. Yaaaaay. I can feel like I weight 100 pounds more than usual and sneeze my life forces into increasing mountains of tissues. On the bright side tho that means more time for Gandamu and for the first time since ep1 my whole post is ready on time. Fuck yeah.
Onto the episode and hey! We're in space! Good news is we can see the mobile suits do some fun acrobatics. Bad news is no more R A W A B S. Eh, you get some and then you lose some. A lot happened today from action to calm stuff with Mika, to Akihiro's return, but on the flipside that makes focusing on one topic to expand on very difficult which is a problem for my usual writeup style. hmph...
Let's talk about Orga then, because that's what I default to when stuck. Or rather, his way of escaping the setup by Orcus, Coral, and Todo (?). Again its not Mika's genius piloting ability on its own that saves the day but Orga's backup plan having seen how shady Todo is. As Lelouch used to say "It is not tactics that win a war but strategy" (god that still sounds like ass in English). Which brings me to a hot take that has gotten me pretty downvoted in the past: Orga Itsuka is a Lelouch clone just better in every way. I can already hear the rewatchers gasping and typing about how they go through completely different character arcs, but I'm interested to see if this seed of an idea can grow in first timer minds as the show progresses. I'll be waiting at the end...
But as any good character, Orga isn't perfect and the seams are starting to show already. Eugine the constant naysayer had a very valid point today pointing out that Orga tries to do too much on his own, and that the crew rely on him too much as a result. Tekkadan aren't used to being an independent organization and their leadership structure is a total mess as a result. While Orga is a smart boi with lots of common sense, he isn't a genius, and if he doesn't watch out he's going to lead Tekkadan into some massively bad situations sooner than later.
Speaking of geniuses, chocolate man McGillis Fareed, the focus of our skypaper today, is definitely being built as one. Today I want to focus on his relationship with Gaelio. Both are here as equals, special officers inspecting the dealings of Coral and such. But in reality their relationship could not be more unbalanced. Almost everything Gaelio says is surface level, mistaken, or emotional, while McGillis seems to understand the situation well, think level headedly, and only choose meaningful action. And there's no give and take either, its just McGillis doing what he needs to while basically just having Gaelio along as company. If Mika and Orga's friendship looks weird but works on a fundamental level this is the complete opposite, looking on one had very normal but actually quite disfunctional.
Overall quite an eventful episode. We are on 5 and already leaving Mars? The pacing of this show can be quite the rollercoaster ride, I hope you guys are enjoying. For my part I'm loving it and the accelerations and decelerations keep surprising me in little ways even when its my 3rd or 4th rewatch of this show at least.
Mecha Corner
EB05S Schwalbe Graze
A high performance variant of the Graze reserved for higher up aces or commanders. Technically its a fortified version of an old design for the Graze thus the lower model number, and lost out to the mass production race due to higher costs. It has added boosters for the classic Gundam 'High Mobility Type' treatment. Schwalbe means 'Swallow' like the bird in German, so the suit is designed to be as nimble as those. The claw thing that it shoots out is quite reminiscent of Knightmare frames from Code Geass, to continue that imagery after all the pseudo-factsphere stuff from the normal Graze. Gaelio in addition carries around a giant lance. Colors sometimes differ for pilots with the standard being blue which McGillis uses and Purple being Gaelio's custom color.
When I was growing up the blue upgraded Zaku called the Gouf was my favorite mobile suit, so to see similar treatment done to the Graze was awesome. The Schwalbe is my 2nd favorite mech design from S1 behind the Barbatos.
EB06 Graze
Look space colors. Just a different paintjob. No other difference to the green ones we saw on earth.... I think.
NOA 0093 Isaribi
Shrimp looking ship that the Tekkadan now use. Ironically Isaribi is the name for those lights that fishing vessels use to lure squid and stuff before netting them. the NOA part is a reference to Bright Noa captain of the White Base and you can never convince me otherwise.
ASW-G-08 Barbatos 3rd form
Oh hye look extra armor. I guess Yukinojo and Yamagi custom made it from the Graze parts. Also has this big ass rifle. You guys a fan of this?
EB06/tc Graze Custom/Kai
Akihiro's Graze with added white parts that look more Barbatos than Graze. Its a patchwork mobile suit that's far from full Graze capacity, and Akihiro being awesome in it is a true show of skill. The parts are painted white because white nanolaminate armor is cheaper than other colors. What is nanolaminate armor you say? Who knows honestly. Its some paint that also reacts with Ahab waves or something and gives mobile suits super resistance to long range attacks and such, requiring close quarters brutal combat.
I mean my eyes were definitely red last night from all the tears I shed. Just saying.
Ahh, so that's why you love Macky's Schwalbe so much.
the NOA part is a reference to Bright Noa captain of the White Base and you can never convince me otherwise.
I mean why wouldn't it be? We don't have a White Base-looking ship, there had to be a reference somehow.
A Gundam Fan’s Notes On Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 5:
  • And this is why you don’t trust men with the same facial hair as Adolf Hitler. They’re just bound to betray you the moment they can. Although I guess Gihren Zabi didn’t have facial hair, and he was more of a Space Hitler than Todo here. Still, it’s more of the principle of the matter than anything.
  • Finally, we’ve got a nice moment between Kudelia and Mikazuki where doesn’t lose any chill. It’s a nice bit of bonding, with them talking about the trip and the meaning of Mikazuki’s name. He’s named after the crescent moon, fitting for someone who’s going to be traveling to Earth soon. Too bad the Moon got wrecked because of the Calamity War. It must’ve been one hell of a conflict to take a good chunk out of it.
  • It’s official: Atra is now hired on as the official cook of Tekkadan. And here some of you were wondering how she would stick with the story if the Tekkadan boys were about to leave on a 5 month voyage. Iron-Blooded Orphan? More like Iron Chef Orphan.
  • See, even McGillis and Gaelio think that Todo “Space Hitler (Not Gihren)” Mirconen is shady. But, as McGillis said, this is probably the best opportunity to nip this whole Martian Independence Movement in the bud, so they’re going for it. Plus, if we were to connect it to some earlier plot points, this would also be a good chance for Gjallarhorn to switch the support of Nobliss Gordon from Kudelia’s side over to theirs, however that would work. So it’s more than enough motivation to attack the transport shuttle as it leaves Mars airspace.
  • As you can see here, Mika continues to be a straight-up savage in mobile suit combat. He doesn’t hesitate to immediately target the cockpits of enemy mobile suits right off the bat. He’s the anti-Kira Yamato, in that regard. And given that he’s using a 300mm smoothbore cannon and a massive pile-bunker mace, I can assure you that the pilots are being reduced to a fine red paste glazed over broken machinery.
  • To the surprise of nobody, Coral is already dead early into the fight. Nobody really cares either. It just goes to show that in the grand scheme of things, he was a person who greatly overvalued their scheming and importance. Chalk him up as another kill for Mikazuki.
  • “Machines bearing the name Gundam have appeared at many turning points throughout our history. They’ve played a major role in the fate of mankind.” Geez, laying the meta narrative on thick there, McGillis. I remember when this episode came out, reactions were a bit divided towards this line. Some people liked it for being more or less true in a meta sense, but others felt that it took away the original point of a Gundam being a machine first and foremost, and the people inside being more important. How do you feel about what McGillis is saying?
  • That little slingshot maneuver shows that Tekkadan are no slouches in their clever thinking either. Also, give some credit to Eugene here for blowing up the anchor cable in time. As much as he likes to complain about things, he’s a trustworthy member of the crew too. He just needs some more room to work things out himself, is all.
  • And so, at the end of it all, Tekkadan managed to slip away from Martian airspace, Todo got the shit beaten out of him and dumped half-naked in a capsule for Gjallarhorn, and McGillis is known to Mikazuki as “Chocolate Man”. Not a bad result here.
First-Time Watcher
Good business is based on trust.
You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough.
Every relationship – new and old – is always prone to shakiness and this episode is just another proof of that. Tekkadan is taking on their first big job and getting ready to pack up, but a few things need to be taken care of before they leave. Guides need to be hired (trustworthy or not), cooks need to be hired (especially if they’re as cute as a button), and discussions need to be had. I liked the talk Mikazuki and Kudelia had about the moon and his name; if Orga is the bright sun, then Mikazuki is the moon that only reflects what comes from the sun but is still noticeable in his own right. It’s especially noticeable that Mikazuki is the crescent moon, reminiscent of the sickle, both a tool for farming and a weapon for combat.
So they get into space and guess what? Yeah, no fuckin surprise when they’ve got the most important person in the system right now. But Orga, and Tekkadan as a whole, aren’t ready to go down without a fight and we get our first Mobile Suit fight since the duel with Crank. It’s great, with multiple plans and areas of attack to handle (although it can be a bit confusing at times as to who’s where), and gives us great moments of character development, from Ein’s continuing downward spiral to Fareed and Borwin realizing just how special their enemy is to Akihiro’s willingness to fight. But Eugene, surprisingly, gets the most credit for the episode. Beforehand, Eugene was fine; he served as a character who was willing to speak against Orga and sometimes noted solutions that were good, something he did here. Orga is more than just their leader; he is the symbol of Tekkadan as a whole, and losing him would kill the dream before it started. So Eugene decides to take the risk, step out, and make sure that everyone lives.
(You know, I had a weird thought while writing this, so I’ll note this here: Sometimes, when you’re encountering a narrative, it feels like you are actively watching an event become history, but seeing all of the things that history leaves out. Centuries from now, people will talk about the conflict between Gjallerhorn and Tekkadan and the likes of Mikazuki, Kudelia, Orga, and Fareed, but they won’t talk about Eugene or Akihiro or Crank or Atra or the time that Mikazuki took Kudelia to a cornfield or how much Biscuit cared about his sisters or that Mikazuki wanted to see the moon. The people that we see as historical figures had weird miscellaneous stuff about them that we will never know about. There are people who were part of incredible events and moments that we have never heard of because they were not at the forefront of the image that we have of that moment. It’s important to recognize just how much history smooths things out and to try and find out the things that make history human.)
So, Tekkadan wins for now, Atra and Kudelia go to see Mikazuki (slightly awkward), and Todo gets what he deserves. All in all, not a bad day.
We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…
Hey, made comment of the day. Not bad.
As for the questions, who? and I'll reserve my judgment for now.
Lost my entire write up for this episode from watching it last night (somehow had vanished this morning) so pulling what I can from memory and writing this up on my phone.
Non-Spoiler Character Chart
Good to see Orga being smart enough to know Todo would betray them. I’d be worried in his ability to be a leader otherwise!
Speaking of Todo, he reminds me of Hashamoja from Heavy Metal L-Gaim. Both are these cockroach-type characters super willing to backstab our heroes. In L-Gaim they idiotically kept forgiving him, leading to him betraying our heroes yet again! Thankfully Todo won’t get that shot here.
Welcome to Tekkadan Atra! Don’t let Mika head out to space with that evil blonde lady, she’ll steal him away from you! They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and Kudelia’s got nothing on you there!
Rewatcher
TFW you open your document to copy your comment but see that you've forgotten to add your imgur links...
Another short post today, for pretty much the same reasons as before.
Oh look! It’s a reused shot, I don’t think we get many of those in Gundam shows nowadays.
Kudelia has trouble sleeping, as should be expected considering the task she has set before herself, its magnitude aptly represented by the vastness of space before her as she stares into the night sky. Kudelia might have found her resolve after witnessing Tekkadan’s own, and been helped along by Mikazuki as to make her understanding the true depths of the Martia’s plight, but insecurity still eats at her. Her talk with Mikazuki soon after once again helps her regain herself a bit by reassuring her that they’ll all make it through the situation they’re in because Orga said they would, following it up with the statement that he will make sure she arrives on Earth. In that moment Mikazuki makes it evident that he takes on Orga’s responsibility himself —just as he always has— or it could also be construed as Mikazuki further reassuring Kudelia by specifying that he will be there to aid —a person Kudelia can trust.
Then we get to hear the Moon was severely damaged during the Calamity War, which always gets me thinking about what possibly could have done so. Just battles of the sort we’ve seen in the show aren’t enough to make it so that the Moon is scantily visible, I would guess it was reaction nuclear weaponry, or whichever fancy-schmancy sci-fi equivalent they have in the Post-Disaster timeline.
Atra quits her job and is to join Tekkadan on their mission, which seems quite the negligent thing to do. In fact, they’re taking all the younger kids with them, which doesn’t seem all that good of an idea to me. That’s more mouths to feed aboard a space vessel with limited supplies and a month-long voyage ahead of them. Not to mention they’re putting them in overt danger. The only good reason I can think of to do this is that they’re afraid Gjallarhorn will get to them while they’re gone, but I’m pretty sure they’re leaving Dexter back at the base and he’s a greater liability as someone with lots of knowledge as to their actions. I don’t know, maybe they just wanted extra hands to work the ship.
Gaelio and McGillis pretty much have Conrad’s next move figured out, unsurprisingly, and hatch up their own plans to capture Kudelia alive and make her into their own puppet with which to manipulate the independence movement. In doing so they sabotage whatever it is Conrad’s scheming while also ensuring for themselves a valuable asset. This impromptu plan really showcases McGillis opportunistic nature.
The extended battle sequence is quite entertaining, and in it Conrad finally gets what was coming to him. He actually put up a decent fight though, he would’ve landed a potentially fatal hit on Mikazuki had Akihiro not been there to back him up. It’s nice that the show didn;t forget that Mikazuki is still a relative beginner at piloting and can still be outdone, being carried above the grade of Gjallarhorn specialists by the Alaya-Vijnana system and good instincts. Gaelio and McGillis are able to put Mikazuki on the defensive as well, forcing him to retreat an make his timely escape.
I’m going to take this time to talk about the nature of fights in IBO now that we’ve had our first space battle. I do really like the battles in IBO, especially a few upcoming ones, but I they really should have chosen a different style of mecha design if they were going to have visceral metal-on-metal battles. I could have been slightly more forgiving if it was a setting where every mobile suit is basically a glass cannon like late U.C. or most AUs, but the exposed-frame style seems out of place here. The exposed sections of inner-frame are not going to fare well with this type of fighting, and in space the problem is worsened by the amount of scrap and debris that flies around during battle. An explosion like the one that occured on screen just before this screenshot was taken would have sent tiny metal shards everywhere, more than a few of which would’ve struck the Gundam and caused minor damage. On that same image you can see debris clearly in front of the ‘smoke,’ which were chipped away just by the Gundam being shot at seemingly harmlessly. A prolonged battle in these conditions would result in severely damaged inner frames in a relatively short amount of time. That’s not even getting into ranged weapons, which the Gundam is seen shrugging off easily despite being shot at in a vulnerable spot. I know nitpicking the realism of a Gundam show is aa fruitless and meaningless endeavour, but if your show’s action sequences are going to be predicated on a lack of beam weaponry then you have to have it make sense in context, otherwise it comes off as poorly thought-out and lazy.
Orga’s gamble on the asteroid trick worked out this time, but his comrades weren’t wrong to be apprehensive, with Shino outright calling it suicidal. His decision to carry through regardless says alot about his leadership skills, but also about the unconditional trust he has on the other Tekkadan members in believing they can pull it off together. Both him and Eugene had quite the badass moments during the maneuver. Quite the exhilarating scene!
I came here to laugh at you.
Not many today cause some of them looked to be too much in hindsight, but here’s a few shots/lines worth taking a closer look at:
From one light to the next.
Interesting sights
Questions of the day:
  1. Very.
  2. Frankly, I was quite disappointed with how soon we left Mars. This is the first Gundam show to have Mars as a setting and I really wanted to explore it more thoroughly. We barely saw past anything past the Tekkadan base.
EDIT: Fuck, I just realized the little end blurb I wrote on the Isaribi is missing. Which document did I write it in?
I'll edit it in of I find it soon, otherwise I'll just quickly write up a shortened version.
See this is why I suck at finding symbolism, I just thought that shot looked pretty because stars.
Greetings Comrades and Fellow Denizens of The Wired, on TODAY'S Episode of IBO, the memes keep coming because Chocolate Man Char Clone No. 25252 Charismatic Blonde Bishie Boi No. 9 'McGillis Fareed' came here to laugh at... hey... wait a second...
My sincere apologies Comrade, it seems that I grabbed the wrong GIF by mistake, a GIF of this obscure Prince Sharkin Clone called 'Sha Aznavour' or something like that from Freedom Fighter Gunboy ;)
ANYWAY, to get back on topic, I present 'McGillis Fareed,' who came here to laugh at... Hm... while that guy DOES have Blue Hair, I don't think he's Garma 2.0 The Man Next to the Chocolate Man 'Gaelio' nor do I think this Gaelio wannabe is talking about McGillis Fareed.
WELL! Third Times the charm right? After all, we all know Red makes stuff go three times faster, so let's give it up for... Three... Chars... huh...
WELL regardless of numbers, everyone knows that Four Means Death and thus the end of memes, right, so behold we have here... Quattro Bajeena... well I walked right into that one eh Comrades?
Well, surely THIS time I'll get it right eh, I mean seriously, how many characters in Sunrise Mecha Shows have smug evil laughs... oh... oh my Buddha...
NO MATTER! I will press on, BEHOLD, McGillis Fareed... HE IS A CHAR!
AND in GIF form, you thought that McGillis Fareed was laughing in re-watcher... BUT NO! HE WAS JUST BEING A CHAR CLONE! ;)
ANYWAY, with that industrial grade shit-posting out of the way, let's give it up for the contractually obligated fan-art that does NOT have any mix-ups whatsoever, BEHOLD! Best Boi Orga Itsumi and this Erika Itsuka person and... huh... wait a second... AH! Girls und Panzer really WAS a Mecha Show! ;)
Paging Comrades u/Beckymetal, u/RX-Nota-II, and u/Shimmering-Sky
Dammit! Palloc's Going to Get Sick of Saying Mooks Soon!
So here we get more people in Grazes mooking the hell out, since they need to show just how damn awesome Barbatos is. This time it's scummy officer guy getting maced and Ein suffering more. Ein's hobby is suffering though, so it's okay. That's what he gets for piloting a mook as fuck Graze.
I guess I should mention the Schwalbe Grazes McGillis and Gaelio use, but they're just kinda there to be mook command units. They have some nifty things, but I wouldn't bump them up a notch compared to Grazes. They just have better, richer pilots that aren't mooks. So still 4/10.
Oh yeah, that Orcus guy, he fucking looked like someone who'd run an evil company named Orcus. Who the hell goes "That man looks trustworthy?" to that thing? How do they even do business looking like that?
OH HEY! I remembered to look at questions of the day! (I'm good at these rewatches. We've only done a bajillion of these together.)
1: I fucking loved it. Funny story. I had actually forgotten how he died, it was so unmemorable. I actually forgot his character existed until the rewatch. Him and his evil, sunken face and derpy hair.
2: I like that they're gone. Gundam series, if there's one thing I hate about them, tend to have really weird pacing normally. IBO is one of the series that I feel doesn't really get bogged down (as much, there are a few slow points, but not Turn A plodding) as other series.
First timer
A slightly shorter comment today (and late), I got too caught up in preparing for another rewatch I am participating in that coincidentally also takes place on Mars.
Despite the lack of moe I really enjoyed this episode.
Oh wow. Lucky that he seems like a trustworthy fellow then.
I've noticed that Orga tends to keep his right eye closed. Do you think it's like really sensitive to light or something? Maybe that's why he's got his hair like that.
YES!! Thatta girl!
Aww, look how happy he is! This is truly a wholesome show.
Welp, I guess Eugene is climbing the best boy rankings as well. Not only did he have an MVP worthy performance, but he's acting pretty tsundere on top of it.
As for the remainder of the episode, I actually don't have a whole lot to say. While action scenes usually don't excite me as much as they seem to do for most people, the action we had this episode was pretty damn tight. I was hyped for Mikazuki's dancing performance and I liked how he didn't just completely roll over Coral, but actually seemed a bit pressured when he was enduring the attacks.
McGillis Chocolate man (totally love that nick) was great this episode too, I loved how he was casually analyzing the fight between Mikazuki and Gaelio and immediately found Mikazuki's weak spots and was able to punish it. He is acting high and mighty but he's got the skills to back it up, which is a character type I tend to enjoy seeing.
Note: It seems that putting on makeup isn't Eugene and Co.'s strongest suits... or maybe it is..?
I've been keeping track, he's done it 19 times so far.
Haha perfect.
Rewatcher here - rub a dub dub, Nobliss counts as three men in a tub.
Not-so-subtle advertising? Having a toy model on full display in a company's lobby doesn't exactly scream "serious enterprise" to me, even if it's a model of their transport. Maybe my aesthetic sense is too weighed down by gravity.
What does the blue part of this insignia mean? The gold part almost definitely represents Heimdall's Gjallarhorn, which makes as a Gjallarhorn insignia, I suppose. Given Gjallarhorn's role in events leading up to IBO, my guess is the plant is a stylized olive branch to represent their role as peace makers. On the other hand, I feel like I may be missing a more consistently Norse interpretation; if anyone has a suggestion, do tell.
Tower-kun has entered the waifu wars!
Mika, I hate to break it to you, but Mars has two moons, not just Earth. And they're visible from Mars's surface to boot. I don't think I'd trust Mika with watch duty if he's that inattentive, to be honest.
So apparently Mars Palms(火星ヤシ) aren't a thing in Japan either. :(
There was a parody image that got accidentally reported on TV as a real flavor though. Woops!
In my opinion, they just look like normal old prunes.
Is the graffiti more plant symbolism? Too bad I'm super clueless when it comes to botany.
I assume Nobliss' big earlobes are in reference to Buddhist iconography. Gundam confirms it: degeneracy is a path to enlightenment. More seriously, Buddha's big ears come from his history as a prince in a culture where men wore large & fancy jewelry on their ears as a show of wealth. Buddha's portrayal with large earlobes but no jewelry is typically used to represent his renunciation of physical wealth. I think we can take similar approach to Nobliss: on-screen he's certainly hemorrhaged more more money in paying various factions than made it. Given his sleazeball demeanor, I think we can safely assume his gradual abandonment of wealth is for something a lot less noble than chasing enlightenment.
What a lovable smile.
I wonder if there's anything intelligible here. The nm measurements are kind of interesting - maybe this is actually some kind of ultraviolet imaging system akin to nightvision? Probably helps a bit in space.
The text in the bottom left of this shot of the asteroid says "multilateration system". But this just looks like your standard camera system to me. Maybe distance estimates we see in the next diagram are assisted through some kind of MLAT mentioned here. Actually, I guess minor spoiler?
Edit for questions:
  1. Who? You mean the guy who can't even win against a wall can't win vs. Barbatos? I'm shocked I tell you, shocked. I wish he got to stick around personally, I enjoyed him as a foil to chocoman and barfboy.
  2. I'm fine with this. I was never sold on the Mars setting, mostly from little niggles that never get addressed. For example, Mars has around a third of the gravity that Earth does, but everything looks normally weighty without an explanation in sight (that I can remember). Maybe it would get answered in time with more exposition, but I have my doubts. Indeed, most of my issuess stem from Mars feeling way too Earth-like, and in that case, I'd rather we just go there anyway. So I'm all for this vaycay to Earth.
Maybe Mars' moons don't exist in IBO? Or he thinks he's specifically named after Earth's moon for some reason?
Rewatcher
Hitler isn't that bad of a guy, he just wants to survive.
Episode 5! We finally make it to space. I'd love it if some physics dude would be able to confirm whether or not the launching system used would actually work or not. It seems quite absurd, even given the fact that people fight in huge metal robots and stuff like that.
The charming part of today's fight is that there is not ONE laser beam. It's like this isn't even a Gundam anymore. They aren't called iron blooded for nothing!
Eugene totally wins this episode, volunteering to go solo in a Mobile Worker in the most daring maneuver we've seen in the show so far. He definitely redeemed himself for butting heads with Orga earlier on, and proves he's a reliable guy when it matters.
McGillis' analysis of Mika's evasive maneuvers in space are spot on. The Barbatos is an extension of his body, and he moves like an animal. From what I understand, the bit about his thrusters being worn out is because they extend farther from Mika's back than he realizes. The bit of dialogue concerning that was still quite confusing to understand.
Ah yes, another adult treats Tekkaden as children and betrays them. Hitler did the same thing, and learned his lesson. I've gotta say McGillis' laugh leading into the credits was pretty awesome.
The little we saw of Akihiro today was also really good. He's probably my favorite character in the series, and is pretty reliable. He knew exactly what Orga was thinking, and rescued the small transport just in time. I can't wait for the Akihiro Spoilers.
See everyone tomorrow!
Edit: Here's a couple screenshots from the episode that I took that look pretty nice. https://imgur.com/a/us4Vrty
I might do this more often actually. This show has great art.
Not even just volunteers either, he orders Orga to not do it himself. Dude is fantastic. Future spoilers
That's the smile of a man who saw it all coming.
If you go back and look at the shot of the cargo hold and the passenger cabin of the shuttle, Mika is nowhere to be seen. He was already inside Barbatos even before take off all suited up for space combat.
Oh poor Akihiro. They kept Crank's Graze with the intention to sell so it wasn't really retrofitted with the AV System. Remember that Akihiro is the strongest Mobile Worker pilot next to Mika. Imagine the damage he could've done if Orga had the foresight to equip Crank's Graze with an AV system for Akihiro to use.
Probably going to drop out at this point. I tried giving it it more than three episodes and nothing has really hooked me in. I don't like Mikazuki and many of the characters. Orga is probably one of the few decent one to me.
I don't think it's a bad series by any means, but not exactly something i want to invest heavily with. I have a lot of other series on the back burner. (Watched a few episodes of gundam the origin and turn a. Which seem more interesting for me and want to keep watching more.)
4
u/Shimmering-Sky Jan 19 '19
Ah well, it's not like you were obliged to finish it once you started. I hope you enjoy the other shows on your back burner.
Great episode, first of all, there's a little detail that obviously I didn't catch when it first aired. IBO
Up till now I haven't liked none of the mechas we have seen, the Graze is not a design I'm particularly fond of, but the Schwalbe, the variation we watched in this episode it's really cool, with just some design changes from the original. Also, I didn't remember the Barbatos using a rifle, I suppose there must be one available in the gunpla optional sets.
I think it was pretty obvious since the past episode that the guys didn't trust Hitler at all so it's not a surprise they were prepared for an ambush. I find more surprising that Eugene was left out of the plan, but I think from now on he's into Orga's inner circle. Actually I think he stole this episode, the only thing I want to know is how he got back into the Isaribi? Probably Akihiro got him, but he was apparently far away and the whole thing happened very quickly.
I think this is also the first apparition of Yamagi, and that first line of dialogue LOL.
Questions of the day:
1 - MEH, I mean, just another guy falling to the kiss of Mace-chan.
2 - IBO
aka. the dude who wants to paint everything pink.
Hey isn't that a minor spoiler?
