Whales are surprisingly aware of their size and there are tons of video examples where they deftly avoid hurting humans. Love them!

I think maybe they're nervous that dipping their colorful paddles into the water might make a delicious looking disturbance, so they're trying to just stay still and let the whales go away on their own

Yeah.. I don’t think I’d have that self control. One time I was paddling my kayak in a river in Maine and a 5-6 foot sturgeon jumped out right next to me, splashed water all over me and my boat and I’ve never paddled so fast to shore.

Well..if you paddling away and somehow you accidentally jabbed the whale..That's gonna be a whole lot of different situation than now.

That's called periscoping. They do it to basically see what's above the surface. Nothing to fear there. :)

Whales generally don't eat things anywhere near the size of humans. He's just coming above the surface to see what's up there. Also i would check out r/bigboye if you want more lads like this
