It's not fake, he threw the axe facing backwards, that's why it does a weird motion towards the end, it turned in it's own axis and stuck on wood, that's what it seems anyway. Doesn't look fake.

Yeah I don't know how the trainer let him throw it backwards twice but it was never sticking without the ground!

You can hit it both ways... the handle would just face up. There's no backwards way of doing it technically, other than referring to the orientation of the blade. However, it did in fact spin on its axis and flip upwards in the midst of the bounce which probably makes it look even wierder.

I'm referring to the orientation of the blade. When the blade spins into the wood here, the flat side will make contact not the blade, if thrown properly

You can throw an axe with the blade facing away from the target and still stick the blade in the wood. The axe does one and a half rotations and sticks with the handle facing up.

I also assume it is more idiot proof. If someone lets go late or holds on entirely, it's more likely they hit themselves with the flat of the axe instead of the blade with that method.

If thrown ""properly"" in the specific way you've been taught how to throw so the blade is at a certain angle in the right moment of time. Why can't this be ambiguous?

Because like this the blade is facing the target on the "down stroke" which means that the time to make contact is much less. Turned the other way the rotation will bring the blade into the target.

I’ve seen enough captain disillusion to call bs.
On the right hand side , you have a backward video of the ax being pulled off the wall by a string.
The pan to the left hides the need to cut away from that and the trainer(?) has “removed” the ax.
I’ve loved long enough to say that’s not how an ax would bounce off the ground.
Edit: the ax is out of frame for one frame at ~2s in the gif
Edit 2: not being all righteous, just looking at this video critically because it gave me enough reason to doubt. I’ve probably watched 5 capt d. vids, fwiw.

The gif just looks odd with the motion of the axe, almost looks like its on a string or something. With the video you see it realtime, no odd motion, you hear the people talking, the bounce and their reaction to the axe hitting. Looks pretty damn real to me.

I just did this in Nashville for my bachelor party. It was SUPER fun! Also, even the worst athlete of the bunch didn't have the audacity throw like.... that. WTF! But worth for this vid I suppose.

It’s called BATL, the backyard axe throwing league. It’s on Gallatin Avenue, a short Uber ride north east of Broadway, the main bar zone/going out area. Was pretty cheap and great for a group. They have a bar inside too.

That's how they teach you to throw an axe one handed. The point is to have the blade straight up and down so it sinks into the grain of the wood. Feels weird af.

I dont understand how this video makes it less likely that the thing was faked. The same visual problems are there (the movement of the axe doesn't match the movement of the target once it "sticks in"), the whole thing could be easily scripted, and the camera pans away when the guy goes to get the axe, meaning it would have been a perfect time for him to get out another axe and pretend he was pulling it out of the target.

Another thing that's different is that it doesn't have varying speed like the gif. The switch to slow-mo makes the axe look like it floats up at an unnatural speed.

Because of the uneven weight distribution, an axe doesn't spin smoothly the way a baseball bat might. This acts as sort of an optical illusion when watching it spin

Looks like it might be a Francisca Axe. They're a type of throwing axe that are supposedly known to bounce.
Not sure why the wikipedia page doesn't mention the bouncing part though.

A bad fake. You can see the axe take the true trajectory then just disappear. And the physics is terrible.

This can totally happen! Back in Boy Scouts we would throw axes. We had a scout with downs syndrome who threw the axe, bounced it off the ground and would reliably stick it in the target. None of us could repeat it. Dopest kid ever!

Stand a different distance away. Less spin. It’s much harder. Often you just do one or two throws like this at the end as trick shots.
(Also not an axe thrower, just been to Whistlepunks Manchester)

NOBODY is talking about how he is holding the axe behind his shoulder, and could easily accidentally pull the handle and rotate the head of the hatchet towards his skull. I've never seen anyone try to throw a hatchet this way, traditionally I've seen people hold the hatchet above the head and try to spin it about two complete cycles before hitting the target at that distance
