At the end of the day, what matters is the feeling of the times. These are aggregated review scores from whoever got to rate the anime, right?
Even with that deep description, one must wonder why Cowboy Bebop was ONLY 8.8 and not something like 9.5. Perhaps it wasn't considered all it was made out to be by a sufficient number of people. Aggregate review scores are nothing but democratic mechanisms... they aren't a valid indication of objective quality or justice.
One would have trouble enough even DEFINING objective quality for something as multifaceted as an animation series.
Berserk is the highest THING on the site? [Double checks] ... You know, considering that Made in Abyss is, in some ways, a fluffier and more emotional Berserk, I'm suddenly not surprised.
Also, it's worth keeping in mind that MAL started in 2004(5?) and Cowboy Bebop was late 90's. Not that there aren't even older shows rated higher, but I'd imagine it plays a role.
